Let's talk about killing off characters.
Killing off characters is a dramatic device often used to advance the plot, create tension, or evoke emotional responses from readers or viewers. We love doing it. The initial shock, the mourning after. The effects of it on the other characters. It's fun.
Nevertheless, you can still achieve the desired impact on your plot and characters without necessarily resorting to fictional murder.
Here are some alternatives to drive the plot forward:
Character Transformation: Instead of killing off a character, you can have them undergo significant personal growth or change. This could involve overcoming challenges, facing moral dilemmas, or undergoing a shift in beliefs or values. Their transformation can still drive the plot forward and impact other characters. (I especially love it when the transformation is negative—like when a traumatic experience of some sort completely strips a character of their soul. But that's a sentiment for another day.)
Betrayal or Conflict: Introduce betrayal or conflict between characters that challenges relationships and creates tension. This can lead to significant plot developments and character arcs without resorting to death. And it can be cause for quite a lot of angst.
Separation or Estrangement: Have characters physically or emotionally separated from each other, causing tension and driving the plot forward as they strive to reconnect or deal with the consequences of their estrangement.
Sacrifice without Death: Characters can make significant sacrifices that don't necessarily involve their death. This could be sacrificing personal goals, relationships, or values for the greater good or to achieve a specific objective.
Injury or Disability: Instead of killing off a character, you can incapacitate them through injury or disability. This will create challenges for the character and those around them, leading to character development and plot progression as they're forced to adapt to their new circumstances.
Redemption Arcs: Characters who have committed wrongdoings can undergo redemption arcs where they seek forgiveness, make amends, or strive to become better individuals. This can drive the plot forward while also adding depth to the character. Keep in mind that this may not be a suitable alternative to death for some characters—for instance, the protagonist forgiving their abusive parent despite all they were forced to go through may evoke a sense of indignation rather than admiration for their supposed selflessness.
Revelations or Secrets: Introduce revelations or uncover secrets that have significant impacts on characters and their relationships. This can lead to conflict, tension, and plot twists without the need for death.
Forced Alliances or Unexpected Partnerships: Characters can be forced into alliances or partnerships with unlikely allies, leading to interesting dynamics and plot developments as they navigate these new relationships.
Loss of Power or Status: Characters can experience a loss of power, status, or reputation, which can drive the plot forward as they strive to regain what they've lost, seek revenge on those responsible, or adapt to their new circumstances.
Time Constraints or Pressure: Introduce time constraints or pressure situations that force characters to act quickly and make difficult, split-second decisions that may end up being quite regrettable later on. This can raise conflicts of who's to blame, or what should have been done.
I feel like I strayed off a little, but there you have it. Hope this was helpful! ❤

Nexus died, he died as a villain and he died as if he was,,, nothing.
Nothing at all for anyone except Sun.
And I can't understand how after having given us a character who ALWAYS, ALWAYS was there for his family and was managing to meet the expectations of not only his family but the fandom, he was massacred in such a way that he went from mourning and depression FOR NOT FEELING GOOD ENOUGH to... what?
A joke. A villain with a rushed plot, cruel and butt of jokes.
Because it's fun, right? Haha, emo, haha, edgy teenager, haha, he only became evil because Solar died... of course.
The character who loved, protected and cared for his family and was WILLING TO GIVE HIS LIFE, deserves to be treated as a joke even after the pain he went through. That's totally logical.
And of course it was only because of Solar's death! Because he's a liar! Nobody had expectations about him! He wasn't a replacement! Nobody was forcing him to be better or equal to Old Moon! Nobody in the family stopped trying to interact with him because he wasn't Old Moon! Nobody made him feel like he couldn't achieve anything! Nobody told him that if necessary he should die again if it meant keeping his family safe!
And of course it's ridiculous that he spent so much time with Solar! Because Solar was by no means the only one besides Earth who knew him and accepted him for who he was AND NOT for who he used to be! It's ridiculous that he considered the only one who, despite his own traumas with his own Moon, was never afraid of him, rejected him, or judged him as part of the family!
He was not at all vilely betrayed by a guy who HAVING THE OPTION TO KILL HIM, decided to "help" him, "cure" him. He was not at all judged for not trusting him when he acted suspicious. And he definitely wasn't betrayed with the excuse that millions of people were being saved while he had to watch as the only person he could ever feel HIMSELF with disappeared in his arms.
After all, EVERYTHING he did and had to go through, after seeing him with the family for basically a year... was simply taken to fill the missing space of a villain for the plot, completely throwing away every thought, advancement and development he had gained over time. Turned without any logic to follow up into a cruel person who doesn't care about anything. Even with the brief moments of clarity he had, even with the small moments in which we saw how much pain he kept for never having felt enough for the family.
Even after all, he died as a villain. Because it's logical, right? It's logical that the only one who didn't have a chance for redemption among ALL the villains we've seen on this show, was Nexus.
And it was all "his own free will"
Because what a big lie to say that it was DARK SUN who manipulated everything. Surely he didn't start messing with New Moon after he GRABBED HIS ANKLE AND YANKED HIM TO HIS DIMENSION. Surely he wasn't the one who slowed down Eclipse so he wouldn't work on bringing Solar back faster. He definitely wasn't the one who took advantage of Nexus being in the worst mental and emotional state (even though he felt regret) and took him away, and showed him the dragon, and the negative star power.
What a lie to say that if it weren't for Dark Sun, Nexus would never have become this way. That if it weren't for him, this large percentage of "patterns" (denied by Atlas) wouldn't keep happening.
Because it's more logical to say that it was always his decision and fault.
Nexus became a villain because he wanted to and not because thousands of reasons forced him to hate himself and hate everything he knew.
Nexus was worse than any other villain, even though he was the one who caused the least damage among all the others. He's the only one who didn't deserve redemption.
That is, without a doubt, the only valid opinion.
/very sarcastic.
Whether Nexus will come back or not, at this point I don't care anymore. If they will bring him back as something worse I'd rather not see it. If this is his final death, it's my last sign to take a break from TSAMS and LAES.
I said it, I repeated it many times(?) I'm tired of it. The massacre of a character I really adored happened even before his death.
And this is not for debate. Nor is it hate to the writers/VA's. It's my point of view and reaction to what they did with Nexus.
Probably, I hope, the last post about it.

Webserials and Why You Should Read Them
Welcome to a short primer on webserials! The concept behind them is pretty simple: webserials, also called webnovels or webfiction, are serialized online novels. If you read long fanfics OR webcomics, you're probably already familiar with the concept. Authors release new chapters on a fixed basis, usually one chapter a week (but sometimes more, sometimes less).
You can find webserials in several places: on big platforms like tapas and royalroad, on individual authors' websites or patreons, or on newsletter platforms like substack.
So now we know what webserials are, but why should we support them?
Because webserials are fun. Because webserial authors are sharing amazing works online for free! Because the publishing industry is disproportionately hard to get into for queer and marginalized folks, and those are the people writing webserials.
To climb a little higher onto my soapbox, I believe webserials are the future of accessible and diverse publishing. There's been more and more discussion about the problems with traditional publishing: how publishers are turning it into a "fast fashion" industry, spitting out books while overall book quality decreases. Regardless of whether you believe that, it's true that the industry prioritizes "marketability" over anything else. Experimental books, passion projects, books that have a lot of heart but no pithy "tropes" -- they stand little chance in the world of traditional publishing, and self-publishing is incredibly inaccessible for most of us. It's expensive, but more than that, it takes an incredible amount of time and effort. It's a business, and at the end of the day, some of just want to share the stories we love with people we hope will love them too. And that's the beauty of webserials!
One complaint I've seen about webserials is that "you never know what the quality will be like" - and I've seen this from people who regularly read fanfiction! Like fanfiction writers, we have our beta readers, we have our editors, we pour our hearts into developing our stories. So give us a try!!
Some recs and places to get started under the cut:
My webserials:
Fractured Magic - A queer epic fantasy series about a broken hero’s hunt for redemption and an elven prince’s quest to rescue his kidnapped king. The two estranged friends are racing against time - and dead gods - to achieve their goals. Will they make up and work together before it’s too late? (This story is currently ongoing)
The Case Files of Sheridan Bell - An old-school detective mystery set in Tamarley, a fantastical city with magical murders and doors to other worlds. Basically (queer, autistic) Sherlock Holmes but with more faeries. The first mystery is complete; the second will be published soon!
Some other webserials I follow/followed from start to finish:
What Manner of Man by @stjohnstarling - a queer gothic romance novel about a priest and a vampire.
The Warthog Report by @warthogreporter- this substack contains a selection of nonfiction writing, misc. fiction writings, and Battles Beneath The Stars, a serialized story about a tournament in a fantasy world, styled like a fighting game script/walkthrough.
Kiss it Better by DogshitJay - A (definitely 18+) queer adult romance about the messy endings and messier beginnings of love.
Warrior of Hearts by Beau Van Dalen - a queer slice of life romance following an online friendship that blossoms into something more. (Beau has lots of other great webserials as well!)
More places to look:
Tapas (Community novels page)
Royalroad (mostly known for its litrpg scene, but you can find other novels and genres here as well!)
The ao3 "Original Works" tag!
#writeblr#writing#webfiction#webnovel#lgbtq books#this primer is mostly so I can link it in future posts but boosts are appreciated!!

Thoughts on the KFP4 Trailer
Okay so this seems to be getting a lot of hate?? And that's fair, because I think expectations for this movie were high, and people are desperate for dreamworks to not mess up one of their biggest franchises. But after seeing the trailer I'm actually pretty excited for this movie! Let's talk:
FIRST, THE CONS:
Where. Are. The Five. Where are the furious five. It looks like they're cutting out old, beloved characters in favor of introducing new characters, because exciting! And I'm really really worried about that.
On a similar note, I know Po is supposed to be training Zhen to be the new dragon warrior, and this REALLY rubs me the wrong way. I have nothing against her character so far, actually, but I'm furious that a completely new character is taking over the most important role in this franchise YEARS after the last movie came out. If anything, Tigress should be the new Dragon Warrior; watching her finally accept herself as she is, achieve Inner Peace, etc, would be FAR more satisfying. And it's just logical: as the deuteragonist of the series and leader of the furious five, I assumed she would be the second choice for Dragon warrior anyway.
NEXT, THE PROS:
Tai Lung's back. He's back. HE'S BAAAAAAACK
I NEVER thought this day would come. Reading the synopsis, I assumed the Chameleon's shapeshifting would be the full extent of seeing Tai Lung on screen. That his appearance would be used but he wouldn't actually be there. Having him SHOW UP, ON SCREEN, has honestly completely redeemed the entire movie for me at this point.
I want to see his redemption arc. I want to see him interact with Shifu. I want to see him team up with Po to take down the Chameleon. Even if he has a TINY role in the movie, I don't care, this is more than I ever hoped for. I will settle for ANYTHING I absolutely don't care.
yeah i had a bunch of other things i wanted to say, but tai lung brainrot has taken over. sorry guys. scream at me in the notes or whatever if you're just as excited as i am

additional thoughts: why cancelling the show actually did Orel's character so so so dirty
disclaimer again: I'm unconcerned about redemption because I'm not a fuckin lutheran. I'm a writer and I like sociological stories and seeing characters achieve wholeness within narrative. moral orel is a unique case because the story was cut short halfway through, and all character arcs were arrested at their lowest point in the narrative, except for some characters on the side who were just kind of beginning to shine.
The gist of the matter is that Moral Orel was cancelled because the executive producer's favorite character was supposed to grow up and he had a problem with that not being very funny. Orel was supposed to go from a naive and well-meaning albeit trouble-making child to a very mature and thoughtful young teenager. The beginnings of this were in Nature, and the way people respond to that you'd think this was the point of his character arc, that the end of it was just him realizing his dad wasn't shit and that's the conclusion of his story. That was just the start.
Orel was supposed to experience profound loss for the first time. He was supposed to grow more open minded and perceptive and thoughtful, and actively question his small world and what was being fed to him. Orel was going to have a crisis of faith. HE WAS GOING TO HAVE AN EMO PHASE. There was a lot that was going to occur for his character, but it was cut short and so when they put that happy ending in the finale it feels more like aftercare after a deeply bleak and unsettling turn of events. Just because you get aftercare from a story that only resolves issues to a halfway point, doesn't make a proper ending. The narrative, the writers, the audience have emotional investment in these characters.
Sure, we joke that we hate the characters and that they deserve their misery- and where the story ended, they deserved their misery. It didn't have to be that way. These characters are well written enough to hate, to love, to consider and reconsider over and over. Secretly we all wanted them to grow- even Clay, a character so damaged and ruined he seems bereft of any of god's mercy.
But this assumption that Orel had a full character arc- its insulting to him. Especially the jump to "and then miraculously he had a happy family with Christina the end." Characters become whole through their struggles, because through it they reach a sense of understanding. Orel had come to a couple of understandings by season three- God isn't just in church, and his father is a flawed and hurt individual. Then what? does he just repress everything and go about his life? Hating his father and opposing him was the start of a new arc, not the end of his story. Fuck man, it makes him seem immature.
I mean, if its the end of anything it feels like the end of his innocence, not his story. In one of the unmade scripts, Narcissism, there's this confession to Putty:
shit man he's worried about his dad getting sadder? This child is so beautiful and pure, fuck man I wish the fandom remembered him like this and not like the bleak combined ending of Nesting and Honor. 13 is such an unlucky number. they should have stopped at Sacrifice. and also:
YES OREL, REPRESSION IS BAD! You're doing so good baby boy
Beforel Orel was a fun excursion, and it brought a new angle to his (very strongly hinted to be neurodivergent) character. but it mostly told us things we already knew. and the thought that we'll never get any more.... shit hurts. Idk I don't have much to say other than I'm sad. in conclusion

Since my Lyle Morgan post is doing better as I thought, I want to give more details as to why I think he'd be a pretty dope protagonist for RDR3 if they stick to the pre established formula and if it ever comes out.
- A lot of people want to play as Dutch and Hosea when they were younger but that generally makes no sense given the formula of the Red Dead Redemption games. These games are about redemption and neither of them are able to achieve it. Dutch becomes a maniac and loses any shot at redemption prior to his suicide and Hosea gets shot and killed whilst still enabling the bad things that happen in the gang beforehand.
- A lot of people also want to play as the Callender boys but again, given the formula of these games, this doesn't fit well, especially when it concerns the epilogue. When the main character dies in the main game, the epilogue opens up with a character that has some sort of familial relationship with the protagonist that changes them in some way. In RDR1, it was Jack avenging John as he was his son. In RRR2, it was John avenging Arthur as he was his brother. Arthur likes the Callender boys but what do they add to him? Arthur is a founder of the VDL gang, one of the older active members, and finds redemption through himself rather than through other people. What do the Callender boys add to Arthur's story that will make him a decent epilogue protagonist? And not only that, but the Callender boys die after Blackwater and RDR2 starts right after that- there literally won't be any room for an epilogue with Arthur if they will continue the epilogue trend of having the previous main character be the playable character.
- There is already an established connection between Lyle and Arthur but it's vague enough to where it leaves a lot of room for a game to be created. That connection could also have people stop with the "why was x not mentioned in z" like how people were asking why Arthur wasn't mentioned in RDR1.
- Arthur could possibly be an unreliable narrator regarding Lyle Morgan. There seems to be a general consensus in the fandom that Arthur's harsh words for the man means he was a shitty, abusive father who wasn't worth the light of day, but there is room to doubt this. Arthur was picked up by Dutch and Hosea when he was 14 and prior to that, he was living on the streets for years alone after Lyle got hung. He literally could've been in the single digits when Lyle died. Him calling Lyle a no good bastard could be from the trauma of being a child and having to live an outlaw life because of his father's choices. Any reconciliation that Lyle could make with Arthur by living a new life and being a normal father could've been nipped at the bud as soon as he got killed. Arthur's opinions on his father could very well be biased because he was only a child when it all happened and he's basing his opinions on the emotions he felt back then. Think of Jack- Jack would've hated John if he wasn't able to grow up with him and only knew him as an outlaw.
- The people can still see what they want, a young Dutch, Hosea, and Arthur through an epilogue where a younger Arthur is the protagonist. We can see the beginning of the VDL gang, amongst other things, which is what people seem to really want.
- Just makes the most sense if R* wants to continue with the pre established formula of the games whilst connecting the games. Either that, or they can surprise us all with a brand new protagonist we never heard of.

Look I wanted to have a good screaming match with Solas, telling him in short, military words where he can shove his redemption (alongside with inquisitors left hand) BUT I respected him, even understood to some extended and I wanted to save him. Seba wanted to make him 'a true villain of the story' no matter what ( that one memory about sacrificing ghost???) but that's a problem I have with most characters in TV - they lack depth the previous parts offered.
I would have had no problems with the game offering the chance to antagonize Solas in a respectful manner, yes! Players in Inquisition could find ways to respect his wisdom, but not like his manners; they could punch him when they believed him to be an insufferable ass; they could become great friends with him and genuinely enjoy his company; they could romance him. That is because he was written like a compelling, multifaceted character, and those are the ones that evoke the largest number of feelings and reactions in people: rage, disgust, interest, adoration, respect.
But in Veilguard he's simply introduced as the villain. Ghilan'nain and Elgar'nan are terrible, yes, worse than him, and Rook and Strife admit this, but they are relics of an old age and they can be dealt it as one would deal with a very bothersome bug that has been suddenly set free. The game implies (without holding back) that Solas is clearly the real problem Rook will have to face at the end.
The corrupted elven gods are just a temporary threat; Solas is the true villain Rook must worry about, because, as everyone reminds them, he is the elven God of Lies and Trickery, so he's definitely planning a way to escape his prison and resume his ritual.
And to convince the players of this, they heap all the sins of the world on his shoulders. Not only the creation of the Veil - with Bellara lamenting the loss of the elves' true selves and culture, entirely blaming Solas and not realizing it was necessary to free the elves from their terrible existence; but also the Titans' severed dreams and the creation of the Blight - with Davrin and especially Harding being outraged by it; Varric's death and Solas' trick on Rook to make him believe he's still alive; his constant sacrifice of people, which was alluded to in Inquisition and Trespasser, but never to these extents and with Solas showing little to no remorse, even when he uses spirits to achieve his goals. Solas, sacrificing spirits without a second thought, when he literally breaks down and leaves Skyhold for a short time to recover from the grief of losing a spirit friend in Inquisition...?
It's clear as day that Weekes wanted to go back to the version of Solas he had written for The Masked Empire, that Fen'Harel who let an entire village get killed and spared only the children, that Fen'Harel who told a noble to kill the king's other daughter to see his beloved at the funeral again. But that was a Fen'Harel that made very little sense with the Solas we find in Inquisition - too cruel, too distant from the empathetic figure who tells a boy to abandon a senseless rebellion and return to his ailing parent.
Now, clearly free from the constraints the original lead writers and creative directors had for the series, Weekes went back to that cruel Fen'Harel persona, but this cannot be reconciled with the Solas we have in Inquisition anymore. And so we are left with a character that existed only in a book, who was changed into a kinder, more sympathetic figure, only to be reduced to a villainous figure once more because... well, because the new players would never be able to engage with him otherwise. How could they, since they never talked with him when he was simply a hedge mage obsessed with spirits and Fade? How could they, when all they ever hear about him is how distant, cold, and stuck in the past he was?

In reference to this post I reblogged earlier, but don't want to muck up UC's activity:
#i think it's more important to see that redemption is in the eye of the beholder #not everybody (characters or real people) will accept the same type or amount of repentance for the same sins #some people might not care at all if the person who wronged them feels sorry; only if they materially repaid their crimes #others can feel the opposite #and either way that's their prerogative #you can disagree with the characters or the fans or the writers about who “deserves” OR has “achieved” redemption and that's okay #because it's ultimately a complex philosophical issue #like i agree with OP!!! but there's media literacy in accepting that not everyone will
I'm going to disagree with many of these tags, especially it being "in the eye of the beholder" and would argue it's more media literate to recognize when a character has a workable redemption arc even if one disagrees they "should" get one. It took me a long time to learn this cuz of how we're usually taught redemption = forgiveness in Western (especially very Christianized, and especially if explicitly raised Christian) culture:
It doesn't rely on anyone but the person seeking redemption.
Yeah, it's the wronged party's prerogative to never forgive, to think the perpetrator's atonement (and/or punishment) is not enough and never will be. Anyone (characters and actual people) who sympathize, and who are on their side, can agree it's not ever enough and that character/person's sins are unforgivable.
And that still doesn't matter to their redemption.
We have an example of a workable redemption arc that not all accept in Final Fantasy XIV with Fordola's situation, through the Endwalker healer role quests. She was raised a collaborator of Ala Mhigo's imperial occupiers, and thought the best way to help her people was to soldier for the empire, becoming their Butcher.
In the Stormblood patches, Raganfrid says he will never forgive her; he thanks her for the aid she gave in the throne room that day, but that's all. And even in the EW healer role quests, their interactions are complicated. He still can't forgive the collaborators, even as he works to reintegrate them into Ala Mhigan society. He recognizes many thought they had no choice. He can't, won't, forget the pain of losing his own loved ones to them. This is stated multiple times.
And others, like M'rahz, Sarisha, and M'naago also struggle, also say they won't forgive...but reluctantly agree they can understand how for the sake of their families, the collaborators felt pushed against a wall, and what lengths have they themselves gone to for their own families? M'naago even scolds Fordola: she doesn't get to give up, she has to keep working--or she dies as exactly what everyone said she was.
Fordola starts out as the one punished for her sins. Through the story, she makes her choices to change and fight and work for her people as a free woman. There are still those who despise the Butcher, and always will. Redemption comes from Fordola's actions, Fordola's choices. Who forgives her and who doesn't can't change that she has changed, and continues to do so.
And in the interest of fairness, for the opposite of Fordola, we have Laurentius. In A Realm Reborn, he collaborated with the empire, selling out his nation. He came out of his punishment wanting a new chance, so joined the Crystal Braves...and immediately fell under Ilberd's sway. While others remained loyal and stuck to their morals (and paid for it with imprisonment or even death), Laurentius went along with all of Ilberd's plans. And in the end, the player gets an opinion in the punishment he and his comrade face, but it's clear from talking to Raubahn there isn't much hope. Laurentius had his chances, but he didn't make any effort to actually change--so faced the consequences.
For Reference for the Healer Role Quests: Garland Tools Healer quest text starting with "Far From Free", and my own saved text in Gdocs (raw, not very organized compared to my later saved/updated docs).
(Nero's the war criminal who...didn't even get a slap on the wrist, he just waltzed into a leadership meeting 15 mins late with Starbucks and has been helping us save the world since. Gaius is the war criminal that went through traumas, saw his privileged preconceptions torn apart, and is starting down that road in the wake of Werlyt to clean up his mistakes and not let his children's sacrifices be in vain. None of these characters "need" punishment to decide to change; some of it simply happens as part of their stories, but they make their own choices and actions toward atonement.)
(Also redemption is usually an ongoing process, which is why "Death Equals Redemption", like how Yotusyu's situation is framed, is so dicey and often unsatisfying; are they actually changed, or they just getting out of putting in that effort to? Nothing indicated Yotsuyu actually cared to change, as sympathetic as she was in the end! But she has her redemptive moment for her fans, and the people who hate/won't forgive her also "win"--the trope is a "have your cake and eat it too" writing cop-out IMO at this point.)
#final fantasy xiv#endwalker#stormblood#role quests#redemption#character arcs#fordola rem lupis#raganfrid bleaker#laurentius daye#yotsuyu ge brutus#I also blame everyone touting Zuko from Avatar the Last Airbender as a 'good redemption arc'#when from the start he's a protagonist on the wrong side making bad choices & failing at them cuz he's not as evil as Zhao & Azula & Ozai#he's an antagonist to Team Avatar for much of it yes but he's also in a dual position as we follow his exploits as much as the Gaang#Zuko makes mistakes he has to apologize & make up for but as mixed up as that kid was he never actually hit murderous war criminal#heck his story starts cuz he was trying to protect soldiers from being needlessly sacrificed by actual warmongers#so Zuko the kids show character is Palatable & easy to forgive cuz he's always been sympathetic & Trying to do right but failing at it#but anyone 'worse' than traumatized teen navigating dangerous & toxic situations trying to do what's right w/out knowing what that is - SOL#cuz so many people have never expanded thinking about morality beyond that kids show

Happy 39th birthday to the London production of Les Misérables (which officially opened on 8 October 1985 at the Barbican Theatre, though previews began at the end of September)! By way of celebrations, scans from the 1985/86 / 1986/87 Royal Shakespeare Company Yearbook, which honoured the success of the Barbican production and its transfer to the Palace Theatre by making Colm Wilkinson and Michael Ball during 'Bring Him Home' its cover stars. The annual RSC Yearbook summarised productions in all of the company's (at the time five) theatres and on tour with production photography and critical commentary from newspapers and other media. Text from the pages above is under the cut below, with bracketed extra information to clarify some references.
Not since Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd back in 1979 has there been a score which soared out of the pit with the blazing theatricality of Les Misérables, and to those of my tabloid colleagues already in print with feeble and fainthearted objections to the show, I have but this to say: remember the demon barber. Sweeney, too, we were once told; was too dark, too savage, too downbeat a theme for a musical. Six years on, that show has won more awards and been acclaimed to more opera houses than any other in the entire history of the American musical. Les Misérables, in a brilliantly intelligent staging by Trevor Nunn and John Caird, will achieve a similar kind of long-term success …
[The Times’/Punch’s Sheridan] Morley went on. ‘… The greatness of Les Misérables is that it starts out, like Sweeney and Peter Grimes, to redefine the limits of music theatre. Like them it is through sung, and like them it tackles universal themes of social and domestic happiness in terms of individual despair.’
[The Financial Times’ Michael] Coveney talked of the allying of ‘Nickleby*-style qualities of ensemble presentation to a piece that really does deserve the label ‘rock opera’, occupying brand new ground somewhere between Verdi and Andrew Lloyd Webber. It was not, he thought, a company celebration like Nickleby, ‘but an appreciation of those values along with the musical experience gathered by the team (Trevor Nunn, John Caird and David Hersey) on Cats and Starlight Express.’ To that extent, he went on, the show was an important one, ‘bridging gaps between musical and opera, and subjecting rock musicians to RSC tutelage while last year’s Clarence [in the RSC 1984 production of Richard III], Roger Allam, is unveiled in the role of Javert as an outstanding performer in the musical idiom.’
[*The RSC's landmark 1980 production of an adaption of Charles Dickens’ The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby]
[The Guardian’s Michael] Billington posited that if you fillet any great nineteenth-century novel, ‘you are left with melodrama.’ Les Misérables, he said, jointly produced by the RSC and Cameron Mackintosh at the Barbican, becomes exactly ‘high class melodrama.’ It was staged ‘with breathtaking panache by Trevor Nunn and John Caird. It is impeccably designed by John Napier. It has a lively score by Claude-Michel Schönberg. But it is three-and-a-half hours of fine middlebrow entertainment rather than great art.’ Billington claimed to have ‘conned’ the novel sufficiently ‘to realise that it is a towering masterpiece about social injustice, redemption through love and the power of Providence.’ What the musical offered, he went on, ‘is the hurtling story of Jean Valjean, the paroled prisoner who becomes a provincial mayor, who is relentlessly pursued by the policeman Javert and who achieves heroic feats of self-sacrifice at the 1832 Paris uprising. What you don’t get is the background of moral conflict that makes this more than a classy adventure story.’ In this he thought, Hugo’s novel was infinitely more dramatic than the musical.
[The Times’ Irving] Wardle spoke of the temptation in such circumstances for anyone who has read the novel ‘to quarrel with any adaptation for its omissions and liberties instead of judging the adaptation on its own merits.’ In this instance, he maintained, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg had done a capable gutting job. ‘They present a clear outline of the epic contest between Jean Valjean, the saintly ex-convict, and his implacable pursuer Javert: including Valjean’s defeated attempt to save the wretched Fantine, and his life-long devotion to her daughter, Cosette, only to lose her to a young love, Marius, amid the Paris barricades of 1832.’
The adapters had cut corners with boldness and ingenuity, Wardle believed, and had found fresh situations where Hugo’s are theatrically unworkable. They had also preserved the essential sense that Valjean and Javert are two of a kind, belonging, as Hugo puts it, to the ‘two classes of men whom society keeps at arms length: those who prey on it and those who protect it.’
Coveney maintained that the organization and placement of the continuously revolving stage was ‘beyond praise’, with John Napier’s design doing as much honour to Hugo’s Paris as he lavished on Dickens’s London [in Nickleby]: ‘Two huge trucks rumble on and form a barricaded wall which, just as Hugo describes, seems to contain a city in itself, a fantastic jumble of chairs, barrels, planks and people, a teeming segment of a revolutionary catacomb.’
This alternative society, Coveney said, was presented without sentiment ‘as indeed are its urchin sentinels, the daughter of Thenardier (a devastating waif performance by Frances Ruffelle) and Gavroche … sweetly and surely sung by an admirable child actor and just when you feel the production is slipping by allowing a [writer of Oliver] Lionel Bart-ish point number, he is shot full of bullets and left to sing plaintively on the wrong side of the barricade.’
The music, [The Sunday Times’ John] Peter though, ‘has a fresh, astringent lyricism and a powerful, ballad-like drive: number after number makes robust contributions to character and drama.’ The best performances, in Peter’s opinion, came from Alun Armstrong and Susan Jane Tanner as the ‘horrible Thenardiers', Patti LuPone (Fantine) and Frances Ruffelle (Eponine). But this was, he pointed out, ‘essentially a company musical rather than a star vehicle. If it transfers to the West End where its masterful theatricality would outshine almost anything else on offer, it might show people that success in this genre doesn’t depend solely on expensive star turns.’ The transfer to the Palace, of course, came swiftly after the Barbican opening.
[The Observer’s Michael] Ratcliffe described Schönberg’s score as ‘all tinselly arpeggios, stabbing staccato, pile-driving trumpets and thinly-disguised hymns.’ In polite terms he said, it was ‘electric, trailing a range of references from high-tech Bizet and Massenet to the air-time acceptable, and Celtic Fringe Folk.’
Some scenes, said Coveney, go straight into operatic form, ‘for example the apprehension by Javert of Valjean at Fantine’s deathbed, or a beautiful garden trio for young lovers in Valjean’s garden hideaway.’ There was also a ‘startling thematic echo of Rigoletto as Valjean ponders the son he might have had.’ Colm Wilkinson’s Valjean was in Coveney’s opinion ‘a remarkable study in impassive acquisition of self-knowledge … He [has] particularly fine and lyrical use of his upper register. Above all he transmits palpable goodness without sounding like a prig or a boar [bore?].’ [The Sunday’s Telegraph’s Francis] King thought Wilkinson not only sang the role with eloquence ‘but – far more difficult – brings out the essential goodness of a much-wronged man.’ The outstanding voice of the evening in King’s opinion, was that of Patti LuPone as Fantine.
The band under the stage and the musical direction of Martin Koch include some rumbling brass premonitions of disaster as well as some very fine work on synthesizers, brass and strings. The score also underpins such exciting production movements as the arrival of the barricade, the suicidal leap (done by the bridge flying up as Mr Allam free falls on the spot) and the descent to the sewers with lots of dry ice and naked banks of light not equalled in impact since Mr Hersey did something similar in Evita.
In short, this is an intriguing and most enjoyable musical, fully justifying the mixing of commercial resources with RSC talent and personnel, even if not all that many RSC actors are involved.* Being now acquainted with the demands of the score, I see why that should be so. [Morley]
[* The RSC members who appeared in the Barbican production were Roger Allam, Alun Armstrong, and Susan Jane Tanner. Other RSC members at this time joined Les Mis in later companies, among them David Delve, who would replace Alun Armstrong as Thenardier.]

Nothing drives me quite as crazy as not understanding the intentions in a show. I was talking to @mikuni about my tags in this post and besides the fact that I hate Maya with a passion, because she made Taishi sad and he is my child and should be protected at all costs, I don't understand the reason for this choice.
I haven't read the manga and to be quite frank I don't really care how she's portrait in it and if it will change at some point. The show can't rely on other material to tell its story. The show made a decision to make this episode this way and to let us sit with it for a week. And besides the fact that they brought a new antagonist at a time where the mains should be working to get closer, I don't understand the goal of introducing a new 'rival', when it's pretty clear she has no real shot. Kohei likes Taishi and nothing from what we've seen from him suggests that he's someone who'll change his mind suddenly, specially since he has known Maya for a bit and still prefers hamburger to pasta.
But what's been bothering me is, I don't understand the point. Even when I don't agree with a show's choices, I can usually see what they're going for. As an example, I hated the whole Ter scene at the hospital event in Wandee Goodday episode 9, but as I wrote at the time, I understood what the show was doing. It was doing the work to allow for Ter's redemption. And although I loathe that choice, I could understand what they were going for.
But in this episode of I Hear the Sunspot, my brain is blank. I got nothing. Just like @mikuni wrote in her post I mentioned above, the way they framed the scenes between Kohei and Maya confused me. When I was watching the episode I was talking with @colourme-feral and said that I didn't understand the choice of music. If I saw that scene in a vacuum I would think they were the couple and this was a romantic moment. Taishi wasn't watching from a far, so who was that scene for? Us? Were we suppose to feel jealous on his behalf? And why would we even need that? This is BL, we know the couple, we know that they'll end up together (ok we don't know that but let's be honest, we do) and so we are already rooting for Taishi. We've been rooting for him since episode one.
And also, if she's not suppose to be a rival, why make her so unlikeable? Let's entertain the notion that she's only there to be an ally for Kohei. She wouldn't need to be so hostil towards everyone else for that. She could just try and separate Kohei without feeling the need insult Taishi and look down on everyone else. Let's also entertain the notion that she's there to make Taishi face his feelings and come to some realisation. And I say again. they didn't need to make her that mean to achieve that.
So, I again say, I'm confused. And please resist the urge to tell me to wait and see. The show purposefully left us with this episode for a week. So even if I wait and see, I have seven days to sit with it and it will only cement this episode in my mind and my impressions of it. And I can obviously change my mind about Maya later (I doubt it because Taishi my precious child etc) but at the end of it all, I will still be in a state of confusion regarding the show's choices for episode 7.
#I hear the sunspot#hidamari ga kikoeru#rose rambles#my brain just won't stop#so maybe this way I can move on

The Acolyte episode 8 Predictions, potential spoilers (If I'm right lmao, prepare for a long ass bingo card):
We'll open the episode to Osha's breathing, maybe even her yeeting off the mask.
We're going back to Brendok boys, that's where the final confrontation will take place. In the fortress, on the planet where it all began.
The space chase from the trailers is in the rings of Brendoks blue moon.
Qimir will help Osha discover the truth of her past, and accompany her.
Osha and Qimir will have some Han Solo/Leia esc shenanigans on Qimirs ship. It's gonna get a lil spicy and sarcastic I can feel it in me bones...
Osha will have some nerdy/funny things to say about Qimirs ship as a Meknek.
Osha will hang on to Qimirs saber the entire episode like she's found a new favourite sex chew toy and refuses to give it back.
Osha/Qimir and Mae/Sol will meet each other in the fortress. Oshamir will get there first, and Osha will see the carnage of her past all come back at once to haunt her.
The vergence is in that hole at the top of the fortress that leads into the volcano. The twins will tap into its power.
Osha will get a moment where she will have to choose, and she'll choose Qimir.
Osha will kill Sol, either from opening herself to the dark side, or because she's trying to kill Mae and Sol gets between them.
We'll get a parallel to Mother Koril's "Fight me" with one of the twins.
There will be a second eclipse, and that is when Osha and Mae will combine their power to save Sol.
Oh yeah, Osha and Mae will heal/save Sol.
Osha will save herself from falling using the force.
Osha will become a shadow, she will accept her power as a witch in some way. Her inner darkness. Just like her mother. Maybe to even teleport her and her sister/her and Qimir away from danger.
Mae will also become a shadow, just like mother Koril.
We get some fucking hilarious facial expressions/reactions from Qimir in response to Sol and the twins witch shenanigans.
One of the twins - probably Mae - will use witch mind fuckery.
Qimir will get injured, and Osha will attempt to heal him; using her desire.
Whatever the ceremony was originally supposed to achieve will be concluded in this episode.
There will be a sith reveal at the end of the episode, to tie to the prequels and potentially set up the BBEG for season 2.
The Witches will come back! Not from the dead lmao, mother Koril and half the coven are totally alive. We'll see them reintroduced in a surprising way. Or maybe Leslye will save it for a season 2. Mae will be tied to this strongly, either way.
Mae and Osha's last interaction will be at the Bunta tree, before they part ways.
Sol will tell the council the truth, but leave out Qimir/Osha in order to protect Osha. Mae will pretend to be Osha and therefore be safe from the Jedi.
Sol will be exiled.
Mae will go off on her own to rebuild the coven/carry on her mothers legacy. Sol may even accompany her, as an act of redemption.
Qimir and Osha get close to kissing, real, super, fucking intimately close... but don't... Or maybe... 👀

I don't think Red Dead Redemption needs a remake
This is a bold statement, I know, but hear me out on this one first. Since the PC release of RDR and admittedly beforehand, I've always seen comments about when would there be a remake of RDR and I think that it doesn't really need one.
From a graphical standpoint, I think the game holds up fine and looks good despite its age, maybe if it had been made in the early 2000s and the 90s like the earlier Resident Evils and Silent Hill games that got a remake then I would understand. However the game was only released in the mid 2010s and with the current trend of studios remaking their games, I don't think its time for that with RDR.
From a story standpoint there is a lot of inconsistencies between RDR and RDR2 but I don't believe that is for RDR to fix when RDR2 created most of these holes in the plot. Realistically, I think that RDR2 should have had an update to fix some of these issues to reduce some of the inconsistencies, however there is some that I don't think could have been fixed as they are issues with the story itself.
It is no secret that Arthur was theorised to have been able to go into New Austin and Blackwater due to cut lines found in the files and that the studios being pressed for time left those areas underdeveloped as a result. And with my prior experience in games design I know that making a game in general is no easy feat, especially at the level that RDR and RDR2 are. Though because these areas feature in the original game, them being underdeveloped makes the differences between the two games more obvious. For example the lack of the Wreck of Serendipty on the shore of the San Luis River when NPCs in RDR describe it being there for ages, a lot longer than the 12 years between the two games. Another example being the lack of the barn at the MacFarlane Ranch and Bonnie's age in RDO for RDR2 as in RDR she states that it was built by her father when she was a little girl and she's an adult in RDO that you can get missions from when she would be in her early teens in 1898.
I think if those plot holes were not there and that Arthur had been able to go to these areas in the game in RDR2 it wouldn't have felt as strange with the existence of RDR, as going into New Austin as John in 1907 because that area is now available to get the things needed for 100% ruins some of the immersion and story for RDR as it's clearly implied that John does not know New Austin that well as he has to have a guide from Armadillo to Fort Mercer in the first mission.
This leads me onto my other issue with RDR2, the Blackwater Massacre. I believe that this job shouldn't have happened in Blackwater as it created the whole lockdown area for Arthur. But it also creates a massive discrepancy between RDR and RDR2 and the epilogue of the second game as why would John settle down and build a ranch right next to the town that he was apart of the massacre of? I don't think John would be that stupid to build a ranch right there but he did and I find it surprising that the events of American Venom are what make the pinkertons find John. As if him building a ranch and getting a loan in his actual name by the town that he was a part of the ferry job would be hard to find out.
It can be implied that John would have worked on the ranch between 1907 and 1911 and kept his head down but with the players control and achievements John doesn't exactly do that and it creates some of the plot holes between the two games. I think some fix for this which would be hard to do based on the fact that RDR2 is 6 years old now and wouldn't be updated but I think if the Massacre set before RDR2 was in a different location than Blackwater, like Saint Denis or a town that isn't on the map that is above Ambarino would make the most sense as it wouldn't feel like John is being foolish and it would give Arthur the access to the RDR areas.
Theres a lot of small issues with the game, like the complete butchering of epilogue john, (how does that man become RDR John in 4 years? i will never know) but these were just my rambling waffle about the games. Feel free to tell me about your opinions on this, im curious what other people think or what ways they could change the story to fix some of the issues created.

GESTURES THEY LIKE RECIEVING
✧ featuring — xiao, scaramouche/wanderer, ganyu, thoma x gn!reader
woo one week break from school <3 hopefully I get motivation to write more throughout it. I was listening to lana the entire time while writing this guys just thought you should know HELP wait does thoma even have a house I forgot
XIAO
━ his heart aches to be more involved in mortal activities, no matter how stoic he acts when he hears about them. he fails to maintain that nonchalant facade when he is with you though, because his one true desire is to feel worthy of you and he cannot achieve that without bettering his understanding of you. so his heart flutters whenever you ask him out on a date, or suggest he accompany you to an event held by the people of liyue. he might feel a little overwhelmed at first, but you are his lover and safe space so he eases into it. holding onto your hand and walking alongside you in the crowded and lively streets of liyue make him believe he has a chance at happiness.
━ he finds it very romantic when you cook for him, mostly because his diet is limited to almond tofu and grilled tiger fish because of the comforting taste they bring to him. the idea of you gathering/buying all the ingredients and cooking those dishes with his preferences in mind makes his mind feel fuzzy with nothing but love and appreciation for you. he will not fail to thank you and return the gesture in his own way. as he is eating it, thoughts of how much effort you make for him flood his mind. he'll look up and make eye contact with those pretty eyes of yours and see the excitement in your expression as you watch him eat something you made for HIM <3 and he'll actually feel very emotional in that moment, because he knows just how much you cherish him
WANDERER
━ his reoccurring fear of abandonment is eased whenever you mention that something reminded you of him. when you are away he cannot help but succumb to the tormenting thought that you will not come back, and will instead discard him as if he were a mere doll. guilt clouds his mind, but you are his beacon of pure and loving light in his new chance of living and redemption, so he waits and aches for your presence. you always return though, and fill his ears with joyful tales of your journey. occasionally, you drop in some comments on things you saw along the way that brought your mind back to him, such as: the indigo bouquets of flowers in a merchant's stall that made you think of your lovers hair, or the gust of wind that made you remember his ameno abilities. his eyes will soften as you continue with your stories, he realizes that he is always in your thoughts and you always intend to return back to him and continue to love him
━ the matching accessories he receives from you will never leave his body unless it is absolutely necessary. if you gift him even ten matching bracelets then he will wear every single one of them, even if the color schemes do not mix well with his outfits. he finds himself toying with them whenever he thinks of you, and his lips turn into an almost unnoticeable bashful smile at the thought of you having the other pair
GANYU
━ you are the one person who gives back to ganyu, and does not ask anything of her. most of the time her mind is flooded with a long to do list of tasks she needs to finish in order to attend to the people of liyue. you, on the other hand, chase behind her and try to make her rest. you take care of her, and it takes her a while to get used to your kindness and concern. she would have never guessed that a gentle massage from you would make her feel better than pleasing other people. she looks up at you with tired eyes when your hands make their way to relieve all the stress carried in her temples, and she truly believes she has been blessed because someone has rewarded her for all her hard work
━ because she has walked the terrain of liyue for uncountable years, time seems to slip like sand from her fingers. she looks at you sometimes and feels her heart ache because it feels like each minute with you is going to become a memory prematurely. for this reason, she likes it when you are physically affectionate with her, but in a slow and steady way. once you wrap your arms around her, she feels like time has frozen and it feels euphoric, as if she can reflect on every single memory she has in her long lifetime, and can still be in your arms when she has finished.
━ ganyu is very insecure about not only her abilities, but her appearance. she doesn't outwardly seek it, but any words of affirmation coming from you make her heart burst and cheeks redden. remind her of her everlasting beauty, make it your goal for her to be able to look into the mirror and feel worthy when she sees her reflection
THOMA
━ thoma does not feel comfortable or safe in the confines of his own home. you on the other hand, make him feel safer than what four steady walls and a sturdy roof over his head could. he likes it when you cling onto him and make your desire to be in his presence known. he could easily fall asleep outside if you were right next to him. you are his home, the comforting one that he has been seeking for his entire life. he worries for you, but also feels your loving warmth spread throughout his body when you insist on staying right by his side
━ he always tells you not to, but he appreciates it when you help him out with anything he needs to get done. running errands is very common for him as he is always helping people out. having you accompany him reminds him that he does not need to burden himself with everything, especially because he has your sweet and loving self supporting him

(I wanted to post this in the form of a video with GamingMagic13’s style of editing, but I don’t have the energy for that.)*
People say Chloé’s redeeming qualities only started to show through during Seasons 2 and 3 because Thomas had no involvement in the production of those two seasons as if he wasn’t on the writing team on every episode for those two seasons.
The consensus shouldn’t be, “Thomas went away so the other writers started a redemption arc which Thomas ruined when he came back”. It should be, “Thomas and the other writers spent two seasons tricking people into feeling bad for Chloé by revealing that she was more than just a one-dimensional mean girl, and then yanked the rug out from under them just for the sake of yanking the rug out from under people”.
Thomas, your target audience is literal children. I don’t think subverting their expectations is that much of an achievement to brag about.
Also, does anyone else think that, if people weren’t so antagonistically vocal about Miracle Queen and didn’t harass Thomas over it and the “We thought she was redeemable” tweet, then Chloé wouldn’t have gotten worse and worse as Seasons 4 and 5 went on?
Considering the fact that, after Season 3 ended in Fall 2019, the show went on a hiatus that was forced to be even longer due to the COVID pandemic with only the New York special to keep us company in September before finally returning in Spring 2021, the crew had plenty of time to rework the scripts to worsen Chloé.
I would say this applies to Lila, too, but it’s not like feeling bad for her was ever a common fandom talking point and the only thing about her that could have qualified as a redeeming quality that could have gone somewhere (that she lies for attention that she can’t get at home because her mom is out working for most of the day, which only briefly comes back at the beginning of Oni-Chan) is now irrelevant (now that she has multiple moms and identities) because this show has proven how much it loves its retcons and has done nothing to convince me it’s not misogynistic, not even the half-a**ed attempts at redeeming Nathalie and Sabrina after four seasons of them making Bayonetta faces. I know I’m of the “better late than never” opinion, but that mindset can only go so far until “too little, too late” kicks in.
*When talking about the GM13’s editing style, I’m referring to the one he’s been using since the Top 20 Worst Movies video, as in, the topic he is currently talking about will contain clips from the franchise the current topic is discussing.
Talking about Toy Story? Clips from the Toy Story saga.
Talking about The Incredibles? Clips from the Incredibles duology.
Talking about Cars? Clips from the Cars trilogy.
Talking about The Owl House? Clips from The Owl House.
Practice with this.
