It’s not a perfect job, really you actually hate it. Being around stuck up lawyers that seemed to think the ground they walk on is worth their weight in gold, it gets old fast. But the job is at least financially stable, and you get paid enough to provide Hannah with a good education at St. Catherine’s.

And your boss, while being an egotistical blowhard, at least allows you somewhat of a freer schedule to take care of Hannah. Still, you have to deal with lawyers who make your job harder than it has to be simply because they can.

Legal Receptionist was your official title, though your boss considered you to be a glorified secretary. Regardless of who was right with the titles, you were a secretary in a law firm who was expected to wear heels and have a full face of makeup. Your boss was a man who was demanding, well paying, but demanding.

And at least you got an hour for lunch every day.

Most days you would head to the pub that was nearby, even in your heels, and order something to eat while you sat inside. You would listen to the few men who would sit by, drink and watch the game, or play on your phone while debating the probability of becoming a trophy wife.

One week after you were running late with Hannah, and had lost her bow, you were also running late with lunch. The big boss wanted to speak with your boss about some big shot that was looking for a new lawyer, and your boss’ boss wanted to get the client. By the time you were ready for lunch, your stomach was growling and your feet ached.

Dragging yourself to the pub didn’t seem so pleasant and you’d really debated just ordering food. Once arriving at the pub you ordered a nonalcoholic drink and some food, wherein then you could enjoy your lunch.

But again, any quietude wouldn’t be awarded so easily.

You were only halfway through eating your ordered food when you were demanded to come back to the office. Your boss, apparently, had business meetings that couldn’t wait. And you were needed back at the office without any time to spare.

Not willing to risk your job, you left the food half-finished and paid, before you started the walk back to the office. You entered the building and moved back around the secretary’s desk, taking note of a file that was sitting on top—the client was only known as J.P.

“Meeting, half hour.” Your boss stuck his head out of his office only to address you. “Coffee, tea, water-”

You tuned him out, you didn’t have to pay particular attention to him for the orders. You knew exactly what he wanted from you. You tucked the file under your arm and moved away from the desk toward the kitchenette out of view. You began brewing coffee and tea, pouring specially filtered water into glasses. Once you were done, you left the kitchenette and came to a dead stop when you saw the important client sitting in the chairs in front of your desk.

The man from the station, who had caught your sister’s bow.

“Afternoon, love.” He was dressed sharply, in a fine cut suit that was both casual and elegant. And how could someone have such a beard as his, and it look downright sinful?

“Afternoon. The boardroom is almost ready-” This man whose name you forgot, watches you with one leg crossed over the other, and his fingers brushing against his bottom lip.

“Hmm. I’ll wait here, I’m happy watching you,” His eyes told you more than you needed to know, and he was all too happy to ignore your boss who was grovelling for his attention, “Y/N.”

“You remember my name but I don’t remember yours-”

“John Price,” your boss spoke up, giving you a dirty look, “this way.”

“You’ll be joining us?” John asked, grinning as you shifted uncomfortably.

“That’s my job.” You mumbled while walking away from him, heading to the boardroom to set up.

“Good.” He cocked his head, happy to watch your hips and ass in the skirt you were wearing.
