In your last post you talked a lot about how Zuko respects Iroh. Could you give some examples of that? Because I'm feeling like Zuko doesn't really respect anyone, he (understandably) has an ego and thinks he's above everyone, even if he's working on
It is such a shame that Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005) was cancelled after two episodes.
Lol, now that I've got that out of my system, I'm gonna assume you aren't just a troll and treat this like you actually want a serious answer, because it gives me an opportunity to meta about Zuko and Iroh's relationship.
I would say that the Zuko we are introduced to has a pretty big ego, yeah, and thinks he's above everyone else. He's incredibly disrespectful to most everyone he meets, including his long-suffering uncle. When I started the show I knew through cultural osmosis that Zuko would get redeemed, and from the first episode I was like "alright, I'm ready to see how the show is gonna make me like this asshole." I especially did have a negative reaction to the way he treats Iroh in the beginning, because Iroh is one of the first characters I loved. I also was sympathetic to Iroh because I'm an adult, and an adult who works with kids. If any of my students said to me some of the stuff that Zuko says to Iroh I'd be like, yeah, okay, detention for you young man.
It's also pretty clear from early on though that Zuko's ego comes from a deep insecurity and low self-esteem. That doesn't make the things he does any better, and yes he is incredibly disrespectful to Iroh, especially when Iroh contradicts him about his mission. That's also related to his deep insecurity and trauma surrounding his father, of course, because Zuko needs to believe that he can win back his father's acceptance to cope with what his father did to him, but that doesn't excuse it.
He says some incredibly nasty things to Iroh. In the first episode we see him respond angrily when Iroh won't teach him more advanced firebending, and Zuko responds, as he does several times, by trying to imitate his father's brand of coercion and intimidation. Iroh is like, not impressed, and he puts up with a lot of crap from Zuko but he also doesn't let it get to him because he's a responsible adult and he wants to support Zuko in the way he can. Which also means telling him off sometimes because dude.
Zuko thinks Iroh is lazy and a failure, and resents the fact that Iroh is keeping him from what he says he is "more than ready" for, and tries to bully Iroh when he doesn't get his way, but then we see in the third episode, "The Southern Air Temple," Zuko's fight with Zhao. We see that for all Zuko's complaining about Iroh's teaching, he does what Iroh taught him to do, he sticks to his basics, and he wins. Iroh says that Zuko is honorable and we see that Zuko appreciates Iroh's support. It's also implied by the way Zhao mentions humiliating Zuko in front of his uncle that Zuko wants Iroh to be proud of him, that it's obvious to Zhao how close they are.
Another example of the show letting us know that Zuko cares more about his uncle than he lets on is when he threatens to leave Iroh behind in "Winter Solstice" but then comes back for him to find him gone, and goes out of his way to search for him, even setting aside his hunt for Aang. Zuko fights the earthbenders to save Iroh and Iroh compliments his form, to which Zuko says Iroh taught him well. This episode does a lot to develop Zuko as a character and his relationship with Iroh because not only do we see that Zuko cares for his uncle, but that, contrary to his rudeness and dismissiveness in episode one, Zuko does respect Iroh as a teacher and a bender.
There's a lot of examples like this where Zuko says one thing but does another, because Zuko is a character who, at the beginning of the story, carries a lot of cognitive dissonance and guards his real feelings about things. His relationship with Iroh is an example. This isn't very surprising because it's pretty common in child psychology. Especially with kids who have been abused, they will rebel against an authority figure and push back in any way they can to see if they can find a breaking point. Iroh's endlessly patient and supportive but solid and firm presence is something Zuko is not used to and doesn't know how to deal with. But it's very clear that Zuko relies on Iroh as a father and mentor, even when Zuko doesn't realize it yet.
"The Avatar State" in another episode that shows how much Zuko relies on Iroh. At the beginning of the episode Zuko is sitting apart and it's implied that he's not happy with Iroh relaxing and getting a massage, but Zuko also opens up to Iroh about his feelings about his father. Zuko also is dismissive and rude to Iroh again in this episode, criticizing Iroh for collecting shells and also insulting Iroh when Iroh contradicts him about going with Azula, but then Zuko is happy when Iroh goes with him to Azula's ship, and we get that flash of the image of Ozai with his hand on Zuko's shoulder. This tells us that Zuko sees Iroh as the kind of mentor figure that he wishes his father were, even if, again, Zuko doesn't quite realize this yet. There are many other examples like this where Zuko is frustrated by not getting Iroh's approval on something because he wants Iroh to be proud of him. Like when he steals the teapot and gives it to Iroh and Iroh is not interested in stolen items. Zuko's clearly hurt by not having Iroh's approval, which is a big part of why he left Iroh, and Iroh knows that Zuko is struggling to find himself but also still needs his support.
Then you have "Bitter Work," the lightning bending, and Zuko's look of total admiration when Iroh is bending lightning and teaching Zuko a move that he invented himself. Like I said before, it's clear that Zuko respects Iroh as a powerful bender. This is also echoed in that scene in the book two finale when Iroh is about to breathe fire and Zuko has this look of "wow my uncle is going to beat you so bad this is going to be great!"
There's also a lot of little stuff in the Ba Sing Se arc that show that Zuko respects Iroh and values him as a mentor figure. He lets Iroh do his hair for his date with Jin! It looks terrible! Zuko has no idea how to behave on a date so he's like um, uncle said to give you this coupon! Look how smart my uncle is! Of course the culmination of that arc is Zuko's fever and his awakening which gives him a renewed respect for Iroh, and he actually makes an effort to show Iroh how much he values him. He still betrays Iroh in Ba Sing Se but it's not the "I hate you and you smell!" thing that the play portrays it as. One of the reasons Zuko was so confused there was because he felt like his uncle was telling him contradictory things, and he couldn't reconcile his uncle's wisdom with what he'd been taught to believe by Ozai.
But it's finally losing Iroh as that pillar of support that makes Zuko truly realize how much he does value his uncle. It still takes him a while to get there, and he again pushes back against Iroh when Iroh won't talk to him in prison and blames him for his own internal turmoil. But when he does finally get there, it's such a slap in the face to Ozai that Zuko on the Day of Black Sun tells him to his face that Iroh is his real father, that Zuko is going to fall to his knees and beg for Iroh's forgiveness, because Zuko has realized that Iroh is the one who really deserves his respect. Not only does Zuko tell Ozai that he, in fact, did not teach him anything about respect, but the respect Ozai tried to get from his son through cruelty and control is something Zuko will freely give to Iroh.
Then Zuko spends the next several episodes constantly talking about how great Iroh is, how much he misses him, how good he is at making tea and telling jokes, how wise he is, and what an ass he, Zuko, had been to him. He follows Iroh's advice and humbles himself because Iroh always said he didn't think things through enough, he works hard to make himself into someone his uncle would be proud of. Then when he does meet Iroh again he asks for forgiveness, but he says that even if Iroh won't forgive him he would try to make it up to him. He's completely humbled himself and it's so satisfying because it's the fulfilment of their relationship arc, and you can feel the love and respect that these two characters have for each other. And it's directly meant to contrast with what Ozai said about respect, because Ozai is full of shit.
And then Zuko just like automatically assumes that Iroh will be the Fire Lord and Iroh's like "Zuko did you forget that you are the crown prince?" And Zuko, bless his heart, is like "but I made so many mistakes."
I'm sorry, but if you're gonna keep arguing that Zuko, at this point, still "thinks he's above everyone else" then you are just being willfully obtuse.
Not to mention the fact that Zuko's crowning moment as Fire Lord is him giving a speech about how he wants to serve others, to heal the world, and even the applause and praise that he, in the beginning, wanted from others is something he doesn't accept. He tells everyone that Aang is the real hero. And Aang is a hero but like, Zuko is a hero, too, by showing heroic qualities like being selfless and humble and caring towards others. And then his last scene is not him as Fire Lord, but serving tea to everyone dressed in Earth Kingdom clothes.
And who does he serve tea to first? Uncle.

The Coward's Son
Tumblr media
(Below the cut is a bit of backstory for Thalin in Elder Scrolls. It was high on my priority for this to help me figure out how exactly he was outlawed and maybe a bit of motivation. Longest writing I’ve done in a while too.)
Fresh snowfall crunched beneath leather boots as Thalin wandered through the Eastmarch woods. He rose earlier than his company, the somewhat strange woman, Blair, and her young companion, Sven. Bother barely stirred as he first woke up and he didn't intend on bothering either if they wished to sleep. So he wondered out a ways, being sure to keep the smoke from the campfire within sight.
It wasn't incredibly long after they had escaped the pair of vampires that Thalin found his stashed weapons. By Shor, he was thankful for that. A bearded axe and a wide sword rested on his hip. Both were dearer to Thalin than his own life. Smiling softly, he ran his thumb against the top of the axes cold steel.
--------
Thalin was young, a messy top of brown hair covered his head. He sat on a lone stump beside his family homestead. He chucked rocks at nearby chickens, eagerly hoping against all odds they were bread or seeds instead of another rock.
Dirt and bruising covered his cheeks, broken by lines were tears had trailed down. Now and again he sniffed another wave away. Cursing, he threw a stone into one bird's side, sending the whole flock into a panic.
"Thalin!" a voice shouted, and a hand grabbed the boy's wrist. Young Thalin looked up and met the steely blue of his father's eyes. Aslin Wildname wasn't an imposing man. He was tall, yes, but lean to the point of lanky, long light brown hair framing his face, and skin unmarred by scar nor dirt. He would've been handsome if he were a Breton. "By Shor boy, what are you doing?"
Thalin grit his teeth and pulled his wrist free, hoping off the stump to stand. "The other boys are calling me a coward..." He shot his eyes downward, not wanting to look at his father. They always said awful things about Aslin, not just the children but adults too. At least with the boys he could do something. He rubbed his stinging knuckles softly before looking up. "I'm not." He said sternly.
Aslin's face softened and he sighed. "I know, Cub. But getting into fights doesn't prove it. A wise man knows when to draw a blade and when to sheath it." The man smiled and tilted his head to the boy. "You understand?"
He sat quietly as he mulled over things. "But... What if I need to fight?"
Aslin opened his mouth to speak but was cut off by a booming voice behind both of them. "Then you fight with all your heart until they lay bloody or you do." Thalin stared up at the massive frame of his grandfather, Aslmir Wildname. The man was a head above his already tall son, Aslin. Broad shoulders made broader by a coat of pelts and armor, split evenly by a thick and dark beard. Aslmir only recently started showing signs of his age, lines marking his face and the edges of that beard fraying to soft grey. "Now what's this commotion? Who's picking fights with our kin?"
Aslin sighed and stood. "Father. It's just a scuffle between boys. No one's 'defiling our honor' or whatever you think it is." He set his hands upon his hips and scowled, "I'm handling it."
The larger man stroked his beard and grumbled, sizing things up. His eyes were pale and distant, Thalin knew sometimes he would wander from his own mind. "Bah!" he screamed. "The only one defiling our honor is you! Milk-drinking shite like you!" He rested a humongous hand on Aslin's shoulder, causing the smaller man to flinch. "Like that! Bah... Thalin!"
The boy stiffened and looked up, "Y-yes?"
"Do any of these boys have knives?"
"Y-yes... Why?"
A laugh like thunder rolled from the old man's chest. "Chicken-shit troll-fuckers the lot of them!"
"Father!" Aslin hissed. He never swore around Thalin if he could help it.
"Gah. Suck a giant's cock. The boy needs to be more of a man than you ended up. And I will be the one to do it." Aslmir wandered over behind the house, limping as he always had. Thalin never asked about that story. His father warned him that it wasn't one his grandfather was keen on sharing, as wondrous as that was alone. Moments later, the giant lumbered back, arms behind his back. "Tell me boy, what are we?"
Thalin blinked and looked about the yard. "Woodsmen?"
"By trade, yes. But what did I always tell you our name meant? Wildname?"
The boy's brows furrowed as he trailed through dozens of different stories the old man told him. "We... Are blood of the wild. Our real name is only pronounced by bird and beast. Shor wrote it down so only the worthy dead could see it in Sovengard."
The beared parted into a gnarled and rather untoothy smile. "Sharp as ever! Like this," He pulled his hands forward and shown an axe to the boy. Nearly half his height, a curved handle for working, and a beared head with a spike towards the opposite end. Crucible steel caught the light beautifully, and Thalin stared in awe.
Aslin was less impressed, glaring at the old man intently. "He's a boy. He can't go around swinging an axe!"
"Of course he can! I was swinging axes twice as big at his age!" Not calming his son, the old man sighed. "Fine. Boy! I hear one word of you cracking some little shit's head open, your's will be next! Got that!?" He bent down and growled at Thalin.
The boy nodded, holding the tool close. He dared not let it slip from his grasp now, especially to have it taken away.
"Good lad." Aslmir smiled and ruffed up his grandson's hair. "Now, put that thing to work and get some firewood for the hall."
-------------
The clearing he wandered into was perfect, he thought. Rounded and clear of any low brush. Should anyone try to press closer to the man, they’d be known by him. Unless they chose spell or arrow, of course. Thalin scoffed at the caveat, cowards used such tactics. A real warrior met his foes face first, testing their metal through honest combat.
His face frowned. How often did he truly get a chance at good old fashioned honest combat? His eyes shifted to the whip on his side, a trophy of his escape from the cultists who tried to capture him and nearly succeeded. “Because I didn’t fight fair...”
The outlaw uncoiled the strip of leather, letting the cord fall into the fresh snow underfoot. The weight was fine, his grip was true. He just never had a chance to use the damned thing. Looking across the clearing, he sneered. A dead and hollowed out tree stood opposite of him, nearly the perfect length of his newest weapon.
Thalin widened his stance, drawing his arm back and made a quick jerking motion backwards. The tip of the leather tool snapped up, catching the man in the cheek. “Fucker!” He cursed at the object in frustration, feeling a warm rush down his cheek. No edge nor point, yet it could still draw blood. Thalin huffed an angry breath as he whirled the cord around once more, feeling a tug and hearing a quick snap as his arm made the motions. He finished about six circuits before feeling satisfied. Blue eyes set on the dead wood ahead of him. Now was his chance to try it out.
The nord shifted his footing and set his right foot forward, throwing his arm as though he were throwing a ball or spear. He could never have passed for a mage or scholar, but he was a sharp wit in other ways. His actions mimicked the redguard who had previously owned this weapon, feeling the weight and movement be carried forward until there was a louder crack. The sudden jolt of energy and sound caused him to blink. And thankful for that he was, as a shower of splinters filled the air.
Thalin opened his eyes to spy a corner of the tree, shattered and missing. Dozens of little splinters dotted the snow, creating a messy pattern of brown against the stark white. His heart was pumping now. It wasn’t the same as hitting an axe or sword against wood or maybe a straw dummy. This had weight to it. This had feedback. This could hurt him back.
---------------------
Copper and metallic taste filled the boy’s mouth. His palms and knees stung as they met the cold stone of the bridge. Thalin was in his teens, a tall boy with long braids running through his brown hair. He would’ve been a pretty sight, save for his bleeding nose and lip, and the bruising across his cheeks. “Piss off, Uthigg!” He shouted.
A small group of other boys were surrounding the downed lad, sneering and jeering at him as they hassled each other on. A large set boy in dirty clothes and a shaved head wiped his knuckles. “Make me, whore-son!”
Thalin grit his red stained teeth, pushing himself to his feet. He looked up and found another fist to his face, ears ringing as he fell to the ground. He snorted out a clot of fresh blood.
How many times? He wondered. How many times were these shits going to keep this up? Every week for nearly a year now, Uthigg and his little band of shitheads came to the bridge Thalin needed to cross, hurling insults and whatever else they felt like at the time. One time it was cow shit. Another time it was ice chunks. This time, however, Uthigg wanted to be personal about it.
“It’s not my fault your Da fell!” Thalin shouted, the sting of tears threatening to spill, but thankfully one eye was too swollen to let any out.
“No! It’s your chicken-shit Da’s!” the other boy nearly screamed back. His face was rounded, growing red in his rage. Thalin always called him ‘Berry Pie’ in his head, never aloud. “He left him on that mountain to die! Like the fucking coward he is!”
Thalin spit out a wad of blood and saliva, wondering if he lost a tooth in that. “Still not my fault...” he stated. “He knew the mountain wasn’t safe, but he still went. Pig headed like you are, huh?” He grinned up at the reddened boy. He did have a pig nose too, didn’t he?
His retort was met with a growl and heel to the jaw. “Fucking Wildnames! Cowards and shit! All of you!” The large boy squatted down, pulling the dazed Thalin up by his collar. “Wake the fuck up! You don’t get off that easy!” Thalin’s good eye fluttered open, squinting back. “Your freak of a grandfather is the worst of you all! Always going on about his ‘adventures’ and troll-shit! He left my Granda for dead in a crypt too! Took all the glory for himself!”
Thalin’s brow furrowed silently. He remembered that story. Aslmir had cleared out a barrow of wandering dead with Uthigg’s grandfather. The other man was trying to raid the tomb of treasure but Aslmir wasn’t going to disturb the honored dead. Uthigg was lying. His grandfather got himself killed in those crypts. “Leave... my granda out of this... Berry Pie...”
The boy grew redder than Thalin had ever seen him. He was scowling at his little band, all snickering and pointing at the large boy. He ground his teeth audibly and raised a fist up towards Thalin, readying to strike again.
Thalin winced as he readied himself for another blow, wondering if this one would knock him out finally. Then he felt a rumble. Not powerful enough to be thunder or a horse, but just subtle enough to not be the river beneath them. A lumbering frame stood behind the boys, Aslmir. The massive mountain of man watched Thalin. Judgment painted his face and for the first time in his life, he saw disappointment in his grandfather’s face. Not towards Aslin, but towards Thalin.
Thalin’s eyes began to water, his breathing hitched and he started to pant, his hands balled into fists, and his heart pounded. Uthigg grunted as his fist met Thalin’s hand. And he squealed as his own jaw was met with Wildname’s fist. Thalin kicked the larger boy off, pushing him over to slam his fist over and over into that pig nose. He wasn’t a coward like they say Aslin is. He wasn’t a cheat they all thought Aslmir was. He was Thalin Wildname, and he was finished being the coward’s son.
-------------------------------
His eyes felt hot. There was no reason for it in the cold winds of Skyrim. But here he was, letting the leather cord fly after every few circles of his recoil. Shards of wood still lingered in the air as they were snapped again by the whip’s course. But Thalin didn’t see his handy work.
He cursed a dozen different names every time he snapped that whip. Each one someone who wronged or looked down on him. The standing log was soon nothing more than a stump.
His whip cracked again, annihilating half of the wood in a single blow. These were weapons of elegance and patience. But the right hand could brute force his way in to turning them into a different kind of dangerous. He spat out a name as the last splinters fell of this blow, “Aslin.” His own father was the source of all his grief and torture. It wasn’t just childhood bullies. Adults would snicker curses and taunts at the boy as he passed them on the road. Or would spill filth on his new clothing and laugh as he just sniffled and fought tears in confusion. “Coward’s son, Aslin’s pup, another Wildname runt,” All things Thalin had heard directed towards him.
The outlaw panted in the cold now. His breath was thick and visible in the morning air. The whip’s leather was hot in his hand. Too hot. He cursed aloud as he dropped the leather cord into the drift. Another name came across his mind, earning a growl from the man. Where he stood, he drew the axe from it’s frog. Crucible steel caught the sunlight, mimicking a running river along it’s head. “Uthigg.”
--------------------------------
He was a man now. Maybe not in the sense of his own homestead and family, but a man in body and mind. He was large, muscular, and handsome if the gossip of girls was anything to believe. But he didn’t listen. Not anymore. Not to anything anyone had to say about him behind his back.
Thalin had made it clear he wouldn’t take such talk and let it go unanswered. Taunts and remarks were often met with a punch to the jaw, or a tackle to the ground.
Aslin’s reputation, by contrast, seemed to only have worsened. Business venture after business venture seemed to end in ruin. Many whispered that the poor man was just cursed. Every hope for a new logging camp was met with disaster. Spriggans haunting a glade, a troll living in a nearby cave, bandit raids, by Shor, even a giant strolled through one such site. And every time, someone died when Aslin fled. It was maddening to Thalin.
He often came to one tavern specifically, just to drink his rage dull. It was one such night were the taunts and remarks were quiet, almost peaceful in a way. Only a shake of a head, or some drunkard’s scoff. Easily ignored or missed entirely, especially with alcohol in hand.
His hand lifted a tankard up to his lips, furrowing his brow to find it empty and his lips growing dry. “Dibella’s tits...” he sighed.
A fresh mug set on the table next to him almost in an instant. It honestly startled him, but not as much as the owner did.
Uthigg smiled down at the seated man, giving a light chuckle at the sudden reaction. “Sorry Thalin. Didn’t know you weren’t with us at the moment. Do you mind if I sit?” Thalin hadn’t seen this man in years. He had wandered with his mother some time ago, hoping to find good work and a new life with the loss of Uthigg’s father. Was it really enough time to change him so much?
“It’s... no issue, Uthigg.”
“Ah, so you do remember me?” He replied with a smile. With the broken nose and short blonde hair, it wasn’t hard for Thalin to remember this man’s face.
“Aye... been some time since I last saw you. And it wasn’t nice.” He stated, brows furrowing up. The very last meeting the two had ended with both head-butting each other almost into a coma each. Thalin only won because the ground was uneven and his head found that pig nose.
The guest took his seat, motioning to a passing barmaid to refill Thalin’s cup. “No, it really wasn’t. But that was years ago, and we were both just stupid kids then, aye? Now we’re men!” He gestured triumphantly, like it was some feat to live past your acne years. “And men need coin, don’t they?”
Thalin rolled his eyes softly as his new drink arrived. He’d need it if this was what he thought it was. “Been living in Elswyer now? I didn’t take you for the merchant type.”
The other man shrugged, conceding to Thalin. “No, not in coin at least. I’m something of a...” He paused, trying to find the right word it seemed, “Broker of power. My benefactor is very generous and wanted me to start passing around the good word, you understand?”
Thalin’s brows stayed in a state of mistrust. He didn’t like it when the merchants from Elswyer tried to sweet talk him out of his coin purse, and he especially didn’t like it when his childhood torturer tried it now too. “Power? What in Oblivion is a man supposed to do with ‘power’ around here?” He gestured widely to the surrounding building and it’s occupants. All farmers and different forms of laborers. Most never seen more than a hundred gold coins, let alone knew they ever had as much.
Uthigg smiled and leaned closer, almost on a queue. “Not ‘what’ in Oblivion. But ‘whom’.” Thalin remained silent in confusion as the man continued, “Your family shown me the path I needed to tread, Thalin. Sovengard doesn’t await men like you and me. No... Not dirt poor men with only our ancestor’s slandered legacy to our names. But do you know where we are awaited?”
Thalin shook his head, sweat building in the palms of his hands. His leg bounced as he listened, growing more and more anxious as he listened. This wasn’t the Uthigg he knew. The pig nosed shit loved to fight, and always boasted about how he would have the closest seat at the table to Shor himself. Idiot. But this?
The blonde man flashed a glint of metal from his sleeve. A dark band with an ornate skull that bore a crown of spikes met Thalin’s gaze. It’s baleful eyes hurt to look at, yet beckoned him to gaze closer. “Coldharbour.”
Thalin’s brows lifted, shock painting his face as he looked up. There wasn’t a familiar fist meeting his gaze, but an extended hand. It didn’t look right. His nails seemed longer, almost like claws. His skin felt paler than it should’ve been, even for a nord. A faint fog rose from his garments. Thalin turned to the common room in panic. Was no one else seeing him? The room was quiet and normal for the day and time. What was going on!?
“Listen to me Thalin.” Uthigg whispered, almost a growl. It was impossibly deep, and resonated in the man’s chest. “All will serve Lord Molag Bal, or they will die.” Black eyes stared into Thalin’s, another beckoning call with them. “You don’t have to be the son of a coward any more.”
The fear that gripped him suddenly stopped. His grip tightened. “What did you say?” The man almost hissed his question.
“You don’t have to be the son of-”
Thalin stood straight up, slapping the hand and the ring it offered to the side. “Say it again! Call me that again, Uthigg! By Shor, I swear-!” Thalin now was cut off by a cowering scream. Chairs toppled and the shuffle of an audience sounded. But Thalin didn’t keep his eyes off the man.
The man, no, the creature in his hands murmured softly, resonating in his mind. “Coward. We offered you everything you could want, and you deny us? Just as weak as Aslin.”
Thalin’s arm tightened around the being’s neck. His free hand loosened the axe from his side. The weapon sung as a scream echoed in his ears.
---------------------------
A loud smack echoed throughout the glade. The head of the axe was buried clean through the remaining wood. Little to no resistance from the panting man’s intent. Thalin’s face was drenched in sweat, hands balled into fists as he stared down at the stump.
That tree was originally taller than he was, or what he found was. Now it was a split stump, surrounded by woodchips. “I hope your master has your soul, Uthigg. Damn yourself like you did me...” Thalin sighed heavily as he dug his weapon free. “At least I have a chance now.”
He looked back down the path he came, hearing the bark of a young canine and catching the smell of cooking meats. It seems Blair had awoken in his memories. She’d ask questions, surely. What would he tell her? She knew he was wanted in Falkreath hold but...
“Training.” he said flatly. “I was... training.” He looked down at the whip in the snow and nodded. Half truths were better than no truths he figured.

The Serpent in the Garden
(( SPOILERS FOR THE ZANDALAR QUESTLINE ))
Zul’s treacherous swine came for them during their late afternoon practice; the veildancers of Dazar’alor were among the first of the king’s loyalists to be rounded up.  Locked deep within the ziggurat known as Zul’dazar, the dancers huddled together and wondered if this was to be their prison or their tomb.
Tekra’ii was the first to understand what was happening.  She was the most talented dancer among them - some even said the most talented dancer Zandalar had ever seen - and therefore shouldered the burden of dancing in honor of Rezan, the loa of kings.  They had been locked away for three hours, maybe more, when Tekra fell to her hands and knees and began to weep.
“Ma de’zan!” Lep’ta, the youngest of the troupe, rushed to her teacher’s side, “Calm, mother; what is it?”
“Something is...terribly wrong, te’mal,” Tekra’ii choked, trying in vain to catch her breath.
Dij’ii cast her eyes around the room, looking at each of the sixteen dancers gathered there in turn.  She did not know the extent of what was taking place miles away in Atal’dazar, but she felt a growing dread strangling her insides; observing her companions, she sensed they did too.  Dij’ii slid down the rough stone wall and sat, pulling her knees up to her chest.
“That bastard Zul,” Tekra’ii continued, “He has finally betrayed us.”
As if on cue, the door swung open, admitting a half dozen of Zul’s personal guard - along with Zul himself.  Tekra’ii leapt to her feet and rushed the prophet, but the guards snatched up her arms and restrained her.
“What have you done!” She spat, her eyes alight with fury, “Traitor!  Filth!”
Zul stepped forward - as close as he dared - and looked down at Tekra’ii’s golden bangle.  These large anklets were a staple of the Dazar’alor veildancers; like shackles, they represented the dancers’ lifelong bond to Rastakhan, and identified them as property to all the city.  “Rastakhan’s Dolls” they were called, and only the boldest - or most foolish - trolls dared approach them without express permission.
“So your patron is Rezan himself,” Zul observed, shuffling her anklet with his toe until the bas-relief image of a crowned ravasaur faced front.  Tekra’ii stomped her foot and growled.
“You dare to touch me?” She hissed, “Rastakhan will have your head!”
“No, my dear.  But I will have yours.”
Zul took a swift step back, and two more guards stepped forward.  The only female guard stationed herself at Tekra’ii’s back, grabbing a fistful of her pearlescent hair and yanking until the dancer’s throat was exposed.  One of the guards restraining her reached out and tore Tekra’ii’s golden necklaces away, while the final guard drew a vicious curved blade from its scabbard.  All at once, the other dancers rushed forward to defend their beloved mentor, but the remaining guards brandished their blades and kept them back.  Dij’ii pushed onward despite the threat, and her courage was answered by a swift backhand that knocked her to the floor.
It was over in a matter of seconds.  Dij’ii shielded her eyes from the horror, but heard everything; first came the muffled sound of Tekra’ii’s headless body hitting the stone floor among a pile of silken veils, then came the panicked wails of some of the other girls.
“Ladies, ladies.  Calm,” Zul whispered as though he were calming a flock of startled hens, “You won’t be meeting the same fate.  Zul still has need of you, after all.  You dolls will dance for a different God now.”
Dij’ii sat up straight and pushed herself to her knees.  “I’d rather die than dance for you,” she declared.
Silence.  Zul tilted his head, and slowly his frown turned into a wicked grin.
“Well, that can be arranged, but first you should know...”
Something flashed in the prophet’s eyes just before he closed them tight.  Raising his hands in supplication, he began to hum strange words that echoed through the chamber.  Impossibly, a cold wind blew over Dij’ii’s shoulders and stirred the blood stained silks that lay in a heap around Tekra’ii’s body.
No, it wasn’t a breeze stirring the silks.  Tekra’ii was moving.
“Death will not shield you from the Blood God’s service.”
@serventofbwonsamdi, @of-a-thousand-deaths, @thewardancer
Tagging my troll pals in this (I hope that’s ok!), because I’m interested to see how your characters are handling the events of the Zandalar questline!  I haven’t finish it yet myself, but when I finished Zul’dazar I realized that Dij’ii would probably be in a lot of trouble.
If you are a troll pal (you know who you are) and you are not tagged, it’s only because I’m not sure how far you are in the questline and I didn’t want to chance it!

Bro - 1
written around February 2017, 4 chapters (raw and unfinished)

Chapter One
The thick moist of heat inside the classroom increases. Pakiramdam niya ay puputok na ang kanyang pantog sa kahihintay na tumunog ang bell at maaari na silang lumabas. But today is his first day of him being in this university and he doesn’t want to annoy the professor with her discussion.
But damn, wasn’t he supposed to be peeing now holding his ding-dong in the urinary toilet?
“I don’t want to interrupt, but please let me use the toilet.” Nabulalas niya nang tuluyan, his one hand on the air while his other hand gripping unto his abdomen.
 “Anong pangalan mo, hijo?”
“Isaac po.” He answered. “Isaac Newton.”
Narinig niya ang isang kaklase na napamura habang tumatawa sa likuran niya, and laughing is rightly contagious that it contained the room just seconds after every one has heard him.
“Is this the time you need to joke, Mr. Isaac Newton?”
“Hindi iyon ang pangalan ko, ma’am. It’s not my name. Teka ano bang sinabi ko? Aish! Ma’am naiihi na talaga ako and I swear to the heavens and seas puputok na ang alaga ko dahil gusto na niyang sumuka. Do you want me spilling my liquids here, ma’am?”
“Get out of this room, Isaac whatever your name is! Isa kang kahihiyan sa klase ko, wala kang modo! At huwag mong iisipin na kakalimutan ko ang itsura mo because you are just now scheduled for detention.”
“Ma’am ihing-ihi na ako at sasabihin niyo ikukulong niyo ako mamaya?”
“Whatever! As your teacher in charge right now, tatandaan ko ang pangalan mo. It’s three in the afternoon, sa library tayo magkikita.”
Inaaway na siya ng kaluluwa niya. If this woman infront won’t stop mouthing her words ay talagang dito siya sa loob ng silid na ito makaka-jingle lalo pa ngayon na tila tumatayo na ang balahibo niya. Maayos pa naman ang kanyang paghinga, he can tell. “Pwede po bang palabasin niyo nalang ako, punyemas puputok na ako dito sa loob, ma’am!”
“Get out of the class!” Bulyaw ng professor bago niya narinig ang tawanan ng mga kaklase niya. Wala ba siyang alam na pwede kong ikamatay ‘yon? He told to himself.
 “Damn, I’m going to burst!”
“Anong hinahanap mo, bro?” Hala sino ‘yung narinig ko? Teka, nagsasalita ang ding-dong ko? His subconcious mind wouldn’t stop bugging him.
“Nag-ha-hallucinate ba ako? Tama bang narinig ko ang alaga kong nagsalita ngayon lang?” Curiously he was touching the bulge inside his pants while checking, kinapa pa niya ito kahit saan returning to his groin.
“Gago!” Tumawa ito. Did his dick just curse on him?
Sagot nito.
“Wait I am sorry, bro pero wala kang ideya anong pinagdadaanan ko ngayon. I am right in the middle of a crisis na pinipili ko kung puputulin ko na ba ‘to o hahayaan nalang.” Gulong gulo na ang mukha ni Isaac, and the guy infront of him still laughing.
“Tangina, ipapatanggal mo ang alaga mo?” Did he just joke about my dick?
“Oo, kapag hindi ko pa nahanap ang banyo ngayon ay papapalitan ko na itong alaga ko. Punyemas, palagi nalang akong pinapahamak nito! Tangina puputok na ako, bro!”
“Halika nga, tulungan na kita! You seemed to look like damn hopeless.”
 “Thanks for the insult.”
“I am saying the real thing, mukha ka kasing matatae ngayon lang at wala kang mahanap na disenteng lugar.” Tumawa pa ito sakanya habang inalalayan siya nito paalis sa hallway at papuntang men’s room. Sa wakas, Isaac can see the white light opening its gate for him! Nakita na niya ang langit, ang trono ng kanyang alaga!
Isaac whistled when he was done. Tanginang pangyayari ito sa buhay ko! He commented at the back of his head zipping his pants once again.
Nakasandal lang ang tumawag sakanya ng kaibigan kanina. Clueless why he’s still there, siguro naiihi din siya.
“Lumang estduyante ka ba dito, bro?” Una niyang natanong, isinakbit niya nang maayos ang kanyang bag. “Ano nga palang pangalan mo?”
“You are rude, won’t you even try to say thank you to me? I helped you run here!”
Isaac said to him.
“Bro, hindi ako ganoon na klase ng tao, asking you bakit naman ikukuwento ko itong araw na ito sa ibang tao? May something romantic ba? E sana kung babae ka edi pagkakaguluhan ka namin ng mga barkada ko. And I have the proper manners as well tulad ng sinasabi mo. And I don’t talk about other people behind their backs, hindi ako tinuruan ng tatay ko ng gano’n.” The guy explained still leaning against the tiled walls.
O baka tigang kalang, bro.” Isaac interrogated him.
“Bro,” The guy referred to him.
 “Bro.” Isaac replied.
“Never drained yata ako para malaman, bro. Babae lang ba pinag-uusapan natin dahil pwede kitang bigyan. Sabihin mo ilan ang gusto mo?”
Isaac punched him on his chest mahina nga lang ang suntok na iyon, tipong suntok pangkaibigan lang ba. “Bro, kung babae lang din, I am proud to say this na hindi ako nauubusan.”
“Bro, ‘yung mga babae ko never pang unsatisfied. May marami pang nakalinya at alam mo ba, hindi napuputol ang linyahan nila. It’s growing like a worm, kapag binabawasan mo may dumadagdag sa dulo. Gano’n ‘yung akin.”
Isaac chuckled. Antaas naman ng tingin nito sa sarili niya. “Kung ang mga babae mo nakahanay saakin naman, nakalista. May premium membership card sila, bro. At habang nababawasan sila mas lalong dumadami ang nagpaparegister at ‘yung iba alam mo kung anong ginagawa nila, bro?”
 “Ano ‘yon, bro?”
“Nagpaparegister sila ulit.” Isaac raised his chin up like he’s keeping a crown on the top of his head.
“Ibang klase ang mga babae natin, bro.”
“Mas ibang klase ka sa mga babae mo, bro. Teka ano nga kasi ang pangalan mo? Don’t make me forget about asking it at baka magkahiwalay pa tayo ngayon at hindi kita mapasalamatan. Utang na loob ko sa’yo ang kalusugan ko ngayong araw pati na rin ang magiging kalusugan ng mga semilya ko.” Said, Isaac.
“It’s an honor, bro! Alam mo naman kapag gwapo, sadyang matulungin din lalo na sa mga kalahi niyang gwapo.” Tugon nito. “Just Derek, bro.”
“Derek Ramsay ba buo mong pangalan, bro?” Tumawa ka, ngayon lang ako magpapatawa.
“Nope, mas gwapo ako sakanya. And my name is a lot better than him, bro.” Derek stated.
“Ano palang buo mong pangalan, bro?”
“Derek Faustin Haylis ang full name ko, bro. My mom’s a Filipina tapos American naman si dad. Nasa states sila ngayon at habang wala pa sila ay ako muna ang naiiwan sa bahay namin, taking all the responsibility to myself and for myself.” Tiningnan siya ni Isaac at kaonti ay namangha ito sakanya. “Oh ‘wag kang masyadong ma-amaze sa buhay ko kasi sanay na sanay na ako. Ikaw naman, bro return the favor kasi sinabi ko na sa’yo ang pangalan ko, your turn to tell me yours.”
“Isaac Newton, bro.” Hindi naman siguro siya matatawa ‘di ba?
Pero sa puntong iyon unang humagalpak ng tawa si Derek sakanya, like literally he was holding his stomach the time he was laughing hard at him. “Seryoso ka, bro sa sinasabi mo? Is this you doing a good time?”
“Siyempre, ‘di totoo ang sinasabi ko.”
“Ay, ang unfair mo naman, bro. I thought you were different from them, pero manloloko naman talaga kayong lahat. Inaabuso niyo ang kabaitan ko—.” Derek paused at umakto itong nasasaktan. If he ever is acting this up talaga ay natatawa na si Isaac sa drama niya. “Seryosohin mo naman ako, bro. Isaac ba pangalan mo or atleast that’s what I know baka kasi iniba mo lang ang last name mo malay mo gusto mong itago iyon saakin.”
 “Seryoso ako sa’yo, bro.”
“So is it really your full name? Pinagkaisahan ka bang pagkatuwaan ng parents mo?”
“Ambilis mo naman maniwala, bro. nakakapanghina ng tuhod ang ekspresiyon sa mukha mo.” Ani Isaac at pareho silang humagalpak sa sarili lang din nilang mga tawanan. “Connie Isaac Layhess.”
“Iyon ang real name mo? You seemed having fun of trolling me, bro.”
“Hindi nga, iyon talaga ang pangalan ko. Here, ipapakita ko sa’yo ang ID ko.” Isaac put his bag down the floor, konting distansya lang ang meron silang dalawa ngunit wala silang ideya tungkol doon. Siyempre nature nilang mga lalaki iyon, walang malisya. “Here, come on look at it.”
Tinanggap ni Derek ang makapal niyang ID. “Oo nga, is your dad American too?”
“Nope.” Isaac shoke his head, his lips formed into a thin-line. “German-American siya.”
“Oh I see kaya pala ganito ang apelyido mo. So we’re both semi-foreigners inside this university. Our surnames are artistically made, bro.” Derek sarcastically concluded.
“Parang ganoon na nga.” Isaac nodded agreeing to him. “Mas matigas nga lang ‘yong sayo.”
“What the fuck?!” Someone’s voice entered all of a sudden. Damn, baka kung anong isipin no’n. Naisip ni Isaac matapos masaksihan ng apat nilang mata ang madalian na paglabas ng isang estudyante. Then both of their eyes met. Tumayo si Isaac na hindi mapigilan ang ngisi sa kanyang mga labi ganoon din tulad niya si Derek.
 “Iniisip niya yata—,”
“Don’t you dare uttering that word!” Isaac pointed his index to him.
“Bro, that guy seriously thought you’re conducting a blowjob!” Derek cracked up, with both of his hands on his mouth attempting to supress his hee-haws. “A blowjob, damn!” Derek chortled.
“Tumahimik ka nga, gago ka.” Isaac reacted. Tinulak niya si Derek palayo at patuloy pa rin itong natatawa sa nangyari. “Sino ba ‘yon? Kilala mo ba, o may ideya ka kung anong course no’n baka ipagkalat no’n ang ginagawa natin.”
“Bro? Seriously?” Derek tapped him on his shoulders. “Huwag mo nang isipin ‘yon, kung meron man o kung sakaling ipagkalat man niya, sasabihin ko sakanila na magaling ka. Don’t worry ako na ang bahala.”
“What the serious fuck!” Halos masira ang ekspresiyon ng mukha ni Isaac sa sinasabi niya. Close ba kami ng tarantadong ‘to?
“See?” Hinawakan siya nito sa magkabilang braso. “Bro, mabilis ka kasing magreact. Ikaw nga itong nagsabi na paano kung ipagkalat niya ang ginagawa natin, when in fact we are not doing anything, bro. We are not!”
“You are right. Uupakan pa rin kita kapag nagkataon.”
“Come on, bro, you always want to hurt me, don’t you?” Derek queried.
“Unang beses ko pa sinabing uupakan kita.”
“Parang ganoon na kasi ‘yon. Don’t try hurting me, alright?” Derek cleared it to him. “I won’t hurt you anyway so bakit tayo mag-uupakan, bro?”
“Let’s go out, kulang nalang yakapin mo ako.” Umirap si Isaac sa kanya.
 “Wait, inirapan mo ba ako?”
“Hindi, masama lang ang tingin ko sa’yo.”
“Bakit na naman?” Hinigit ulit siya ni Derek, fronting him back at him. “Iniisip mo talagang ipagkakalat ko rin no?”
“Bakit may nangyari ba?” Isaac said, firmly uninterested.
“Kaya gusto rin kitang sapukin, e nakakalito ka.” Umakbay si Derek sakanya. The men’s room is covered with laughters until they both got out. “Siguro nature ‘yon sa’yo. Nabasa ko kasi, mahirap daw minsan intindihin ang Germans. Their intonations might sometimes fool you around mas malala kapag nagpapatawa kasi sila lang ang natatawa. Minsan lang naman.”
“Ganoon ba ako kanina habang kausap mo ako, bro?”
“Oo, pero konti lang naman. I can say that you would manage to be different from the stereotypes, mukhang magaling ka naman magpatawa, e.”
“Hindi pa ako nagpapatawa sa’yo.” Isaac told him.
“But your expressions are!” Derek responded raising both of his arms in the air. “I am not saying that you look like a clown, seriously that would be rude. Bro, nakakatuwa kang kasama that’s what I am trying to say. Kaya kung may kumalat man na issue sabay natin uupakan ‘yung gunggong na ‘yon, naiintindihan mo ba ako, bro? Hah, Isaac naiintndihan mo ba ako?” Derek called his name pulling a fist bump in the air.
Nagtagpo ang mga suntok nila. “Yeah, tama ka.”
“I know right, I am always right.” Derek said. “Wait, do you still remember the way back to your class?”
“I have my handbook, bro and I am not shy to ask someone kung sakaling maligaw man ako sa lugar na ‘to.”
“That’s a good thing, kasi kailangan ko nang umalis. It’s already 2:30pm, bawal akong malate sa detention room. Remember this, mga praning ang professors dito kaya iwasan mong makipag-tagisan ng tingin sa kanila or else pababalik balik ka sa lugar na iyon.”
 “I am actually going there.”
“Like right now?” Derek inquired, mukhang excited pa ito. Ibang klase mukhang trip na trip niya yata akong makasama sa detention room.
“Nope, alas tres pa ako pupunta do’n.”
“But it’s only thirty minutes before that, may pupuntahan ka pa ba? You need not to be late, baka mas matagal kang palalayain ng professor. Bawal pa naman malate, bro. Baka gusto mo sabay nalang tayo, ‘wag mo nalang puntahan ‘yang kailangan mo pang puntahan. Para na rin may kasama ako.” Derek offered.
“Bro, wala ka bang ibang kaibigan?”
“Ikaw na ang bago kong kaibigan, bro.” Derek said, with a growing smile on his face.
“Seriously, bro?” Isaac confusingly asked. May sira ba sa utak ‘tong taong ‘to?
“Yes, bro.” Ani Derek, saying it with the rising tone in his voice like he was proud making friends of Isaac. “At ako lang dapat ang kaibigan mo.”

Loa Bound - Teeth
Xiao’s eyes widened when the two massive creatures were summoned, his breath nearly stopping when he finally saw Raptor Blood. When time seemingly froze, his heart began to race as he looked around at them and realized that only he was moving. He looked for the source of the voice, trying to see if there was someone else who was moving or if it was truly just him. Surely he couldn’t be ‘old one’... he was only in his 30s, after all.
"You are to obey and protect.  That is the magic that the witch bound us with..."  The stag, Thornhoof, looked at the predator, calm and wisdom in his voice.  "You cannot decide to take over your vessel to kill."
"Then control the lusts of your own body, Stag.  It is you and yours that came after what is mine."  There was a grumble from the raptor, more eyeing the other raptor than the stag who stood proud over the one it held as its host.  Raptorblood saw this Claw Hunter as a threat, and he did not like it.
"You cannot go killing for a mate.  There are many to breed with.  Small things do not bring good pups."  Wolf's Call spoke practically, keeping her eyes on those below.  "Your host has taken a son of Akil’zon.  Eagle’s Wing is his own brother.  That one will produce strong pups."
"He will not allow us to bear him hatchlings until the pandaren is heavy with his own."  The eagle was weak to see, merely a spirit, but his voice was clear as it spoke.  "He shares with the servant of Krag’wa.  Too bad he is not given frogs blood, I think the witch would have liked him."
"The magic is only strong when they are cubs."  Bear’s Mother spoke, not looking at her host, the pregnant woman staring at the sky with sightless eyes.  "And you, Raptorblood, would not let your cub have the blood of anything but the pandaren.”  The bear  nodded to Xiao Chun, all the spirits looking at him with the same colored eyes of their hosts, shades of amber from pumpkin to dark tigers eye.  "Because of him, Xuen and the Loa of Pandaria claim her.  Your host has as much loyalty to the one they call Xuen as to the Loa of Graves."
Xiao was listened in stunned silence, his eyes widening and the color running from his face when they all pointed at him and spoke of Tarja being claimed by his Loa of Pandaria. He looked panicked back and forth, uncertain if he could even speak… but he was going to try.
“I-... request to be heard? I do not know how this works.. .if you can even hear me…”
He paused, waiting to see if they recognized his voice, if he could even speak.
"You are heard, small one."  It was Claw Hunter who spoke, but the dark colored male was still staring down the bigger male.  "You and This one have taken from the Loa of Trolls and given to your own."
"Wolf helped!"  Eagle was turning his beak up to where Kit and the Wolf stood.  "They knew of the magic."
"Sssheee knew... asssss did Claw...."  The snake unfurled itself, a wide hood showing now as it spoke.  "The older onesss knew... Claw and Wolf, Bear and Eagle, Stag.  You are all complicit in this.  The Ssssshadowhunter belongss to Pandaria and the Darkspear one.  All becaussse you never told the vesssssel".
Xiao nodded nervously as they acknowledged him. “Forgive me if I speak out of turn, but… Raptor Blood, you know I am strongly willed, even if I am submissive to my Lok’dim. Thornhoof does not need to control anything, I am a grown man and he and his own body did not pick me up and put me in their lap, I did it myself. My Lok’dim, the one who I bow to, he and I have an agreement. It is not an agreement that anyone will encroach on regardless of what claims are thought to be made.” He paused, trying to keep his nerve as he looked to Wolf’s Call. “While some may be small in comparison to nine foot tall Trolls, that does not mean my pups will be inferior by any means. I… may be incredibly pressing my luck, but I will be bold in saying that whether it is Raptor Blood, Eagles Wing, or even Thornhoof… I am no small, breakable thing. Even through your hosts, I can outlast each one. It is why Tarja belongs to my people, my Celestials, my Loas. I may be submissive to them, but in a battle of wills, of tenacity, the fire of a Pandaren burns bright. The blood of the Shado-Pan, the blessings of the Celestials, the natural affinity to use my Loa’s magic flows in my very blood. That is the gift Tarja is given. I have been told I am the heart of this Autumnpaw tribe that has formed around us. I am going to take that role and bear it proudly. I bow to Vol’raka Autumnpaw, Janaret Autumnpaw, and my lovely Venyabi. Yet their hearts bow to mine. My body, my tribe, and my cubs, brood, offspring, whatever you wish to call them… will be as strong as their Ba, their Mama Mei, and the Celestials that will one day empower them.” He paused, assuming he wasn’t ran over by angry Raptor Blood or something at this point.
“That does not mean my love’s Loas are forgotten. He is not the only child of Bwonsamdi anymore. I serve the Loa of Graves when the need arises. Your Loa are still honored… but it is time for a new generation, a new tribe… and new children of Loa. Raised in both cultures, honoring both. They will coexist, one way or another. It is up to you whether you do that with honor and grace… or by struggling every step of the way.”
He remained poised, taking slow steady breaths, but internally he may have been having a minor panic attack since he kind of just stood up to a small pantheon of minor Loa.
"I like this one, he is fuzzy and speaks his mind.  Are we not sure he does not a bit of us in him?"  Bear's mother looked down at the pandaren, a smile in her tone.  "I think they will be fine."
Eagle just flapped its wings.  "Mine belongs to Raptor Blood.  Mine will not give children to the child of Xuen, but he has called mine to the Red crane.  I think I can sit next to the crane and be happy with the ones my vessel has chosen"
Most nodded their agreements, content with the words of the small monk to keep the traditions of both.  Even Bat and Snake agreed.  It was Raptor and Claw that were silent and glaring at each other.  If Xiao had ever spent time with the raptors in the fields he'd notice something bad coming down.
"This is my place....  my land.  My flock.  Do not interfere, old one."
The attack was fast, hard and meant to kill.  Animal spirits moved to the sides as Raptor Blood raised up to attack with his razor sharp claws and teeth.  The whistling was shrill as the spirit of uncle attacked nephew.  "You will not disobey your vessel.  And this place will be mine!"

Interviews
Alice Skinner
Alice Skinner is a 25 year old artist originating from London. She comes from London and is currently based London and New York City. She earned her BA with honors in Illustration and Visual Media at the London College of Communication. Her work often touches on topics like gender, sexism, and sexuality.
A bunch of your works are inspired by Pablo Picasso, when did you start doing this and why?
So I wrote my thesis for the last year of my degree on the gender gap in art and out of like the top ten most expensive works of art in the world, like 6 of them are Picasso. And for me, it was all about depictions of women are worth so much money but then work created by them is not. So I just wanted to start taking recognizable images and giving these women narratives, and modernize them for our generation. And also, the meme captions are there because the young people need relatability so they can see themselves in popular culture and in art. Where as I feel like for many many years art is very elitist. I’m just trying to change that.
As a high school student, I’ve noticed that the arts are in my opinion, unappreciated. Do you fear that such revered artists will eventually be forgotten by the youth?
Yeah, and I think it’s important that even if we disagree with the person - as a person I hate Picasso, he was a sexist, racist, horrible man - but he still paved the way in art. I don’t really like classical art and that’s why it was interesting doing this project because it gave me a new appreciation of how we’re here. But sort of changing it and veering it in it’s own direction.
You said the depiction of women is very popular and sells well but the art that women create isn’t. How do you think that can change and do you think it’s already changing?
I do think it’s changing. Instagram is like one of the biggest tool for female artists right now. I’m also in an exhibition in London this week that is all about women who have furthered their careers with just Instagram. I think because we’re taking it outside of the gallery, and not just women but all minorities are having more of a chance at being able to be artists because the way we are consuming our art is changing. I think it’s the best time so far for women and minorities to come through.
In one of the pieces you’re showcasing, the caption is “How I sleep at night knowing that strange men on the internet hate me for existing.” What kind of hate have you been receiving? And how frequent is this hate?
It comes in bursts. It was very overwhelming after the women’s march. A piece of mine, which I completely stand by, said white silence equals white consent and a lot of white people, especially men, did not like this. I had like 4 days of being trolled by the alt-right and nazis. [They were saying] I shouldn’t be able to live, I shouldn’t be able to procreate, n-word lover, all of these crazy things. That was the big incident but it does happen quite regularly, I’ll just get some man in my inbox telling me how awful I am and sexist doesn’t exist and all of that crap.
Does it ever scare you?
Yeah, when the women’s march happened it was real bloody intense. I got like 700 new followers in a day and then like 700 haters and my phone [was going crazy]. They found my twitter as well and it was everything to “you shouldn’t be able to procreate” to just “eat shit.” I can find the humor in these things because these people are just close-minded ignorant fools.
You said it scares you, but does it also excite you?
I was with my mom when it happened - we don’t live together so it was quite rare that we were together - she was getting excited because she said “isn’t this what artists try to do their whole lives? To start a conversation, and you’ve started a conversation, cause like - some of it’s good and some of its bad, but people are talking.”
Luz Rodriguez Dager
Luz Dager is a 27 year old artist originating from Ecuador. She is based in Ecuador but comes to New York often. She earned her Bachelors in Graphic Design and Visual Communication at the Universidad Casa Grande in Ecuador. Her work often touches on female empowerment, and body positivity.
I’ve noticed that many of your works have been on the topic of body positivity, has body positivity been an issue for you growing up?
Yeah, I wasn’t the skinny girl in my college. So it was hard because I always wanted to be more skinny, more pretty, I always wanted to have straight hair because I have curly hair and all those kind of things [made it a] really hard time. So yes that is part of what I’m doing right now. It’s not the whole thing but it’s a really big part of it. Also I realize little girls like my cousins and the daughters of some of my friends who are 5 and 6 years old  are already worrying about what they look [like] and what people think about them, and I don’t think it’s a stupid thing but it’s like “why are they doing that? They are just kids.” So this is part of how I can speak aloud what I feel, and demonstrate the physical is not everything.
In all of your pieces that you’re showing it's black and white, but then there’s a bundle of color somewhere. Do the colors represent anything?
Yeah, they actually represent who you are inside. The series of illustrations are about self love and how you can improve or achieve self love. And I think these 16 years I’ve been in New York I have tried to do that, even though I didn’t realize it until now. They are black and white illustrations and the colors that pop out aren’t the “physical” illustration. Every single piece is of a girl doing something, in the first piece it’s a girl discovering what’s wrong with her, but she realizes nothing wrong. In the second one is helping herself to improve, to realize things can be better if you love yourself first and not to let everything get her down. Not for anyone, because they are many things you can’t control, but you can control yourself, if you can do that you have resolve.
In your piece, “Forgive,” who are you telling to forgive and who should she be forgiving?
She has to forgive herself. She’s like punishing herself because something happened or something different happened. She tries really hard and she does things wrong and things come out wrong, and she does things right and things still come out wrong, so it’s all these situations she can never forgive because she always feels [she is wrong]. But the flowers start coming up and she starts forgiving herself for the things that happen and don’t happen that aren’t her fault.
Anna Marcelo
Anna Marcelo is an artist who originates from the Philippines and is currently based there and in New York city. She is studying Graphic Design at Pratt Institute. Her work often touches on technology and mental health.
Some of your work involved modern technology and how it affects modern technology and how it affects relationships. Do you think the effect is positive or negative.
What I wanted to talk about was how we always think about how digital things are fake, but technology has evolved in a sense that it’s become an extension of ourselves and we have to question, “is it reality at this point?” because our social media, like snapchat, and instagram, in a world of everything to our nudes to our breakdowns they become documentations of our most vulnerable selves. So that’s what I wanted to talk about when it comes to digital intimacy. This can be both bad and good. I’ve done art experiments where people have sexually harassed me, but also there are such good things like intimate stories. Intimacy is just a positive thing, but there is vulnerability.
Do you think younger people are more likely to be affected?
Yeah, of course because we grew up with it [technology]. Like I grew up having internet friends and that whole thing. It becomes an extension of ourselves and that’s not necessarily a bad thing but there are effects to it.
It seems like you are trying to showcase the power of women in your pieces tonight, is that right?
Not exactly, it was actually about body politics and erotica. I wouldn’t call it positive but it is a commentary on it. You can freely interpret it - that’s like the whole art thing but when I created it, it was supposed to be a play on two types of binding that society creates on us. Most of them are filipino porn stars and most of them actually change their names into soda names, so there’s a girl called Pepsi Paloma to create this fantasy. And she was in the business since she was like 14.
Is that legal in the Philippines?
It’s not now, but it was the 80’s and it was legal back then. It was purely fucked up, they were forced to be stereotyped. It went to an extreme that this girl 3 years later kills herself at 17, and in her diary she talks about the violence in the porn industry. There’s nothing wrong with porn, but like the creation of it. That’s why I wanted to use binding because it symbolizes what society forces us to be physically.
Rosa Chang
Rosa Chang is an artist who originates in Seoul, South Korea. She regularly works in New York City and earned her Bachelors of Fine Arts at the Maryland Institute College of Art. She is currently enrolled in the Visual Narrative graduate program at the School of Visual Arts (SVA).
In your Weeping Tree Story, you say the use of abandoned objects, old garments, and denim serves as a metaphor for the feelings of those who feel socially abandoned and rejected, have you ever felt that way?
Yeah, of course, especially in my first couple of years surviving in a different country as an immigrant. Also I’m [a] minority [and] also [a] woman and English isn’t my first language. But I think these kind of things unconsciously inspired my art. But I kind of wanted to create something positive. I really like the idea of reusability, we recycle used stuff that can’t be used anymore but can turn it into something very cool.
When did you start caring about recycling? In America I’ve noticed it’s not really a big deal to a lot of people.
So I was working in a natural indigo dyeing studio two years ago where I was an apprentice. I learned how to dye fabric and realized that there is nothing to be wasted and the whole process taught me that everything comes back to the earth. And it helps regrow the earth, so it’s a cycle. I thought it would be nice to apply that whole process to my own artwork. It’s too long to explain the whole process of dyeing but the plants, water, and other resources are super precious.
Why did you choose cactus for this past exhibition?
Aside from this exhibition I’ve also been painting this series called, “I am not your comfort zone,” where I choose things like a cat or pillow, it can be something useful or something small and cute, and I thought maybe they want their own voice. For example, a cat that’s very cute but it doesn’t really want you to pet it all the time, so the pet wants the power to express this emotion. The items are usually fragile and have no voice to give them a power to express themselves. So as an alternative I decided to add needles on their surface so it turns into a cactus.

Am I what the media portrayed me as? Am I what those celebrities think of me?”
She herself replied, “No, I can’t be any of that. That female you noticed flashing throughout your television monitors, maintaining a placard in hand, eyebrows raised, gaze constant on the tiny round lens of a cellular telephone camera, definitely appeared to me. The depth of her thoughts that contemplated inside the photo virtually had strains of me. She appeared fiery, I relate to that but then the ‘breaking information headlines’ told an exclusive story. The headlines had been no longer me — Martyr’s daughter.”
Pronouncing that she does now not like to be referred to as that manner, she places it this way, “I’m my father’s daughter. I’m my Papa’s Gulgul. I’m his doll. I’m a two-yr-vintage artist who did now not understand words however understood stick figures, which he drew in letters addressed to me. I’m my mom’s headache, her opinionated, reckless, moody baby — a mirrored image of her. I’m my sister’s guide to popular culture and her sparring companion before the huge suits. I’m also the woman who sits on the first bench at some point of lectures with intentions of interrupting the trainer and beginning fiery debates on the whole thing and anything, only because literature is more a laugh that way.”
She calls herself a bibliophile. “The library at home is overflooding, and my largest difficulty for the beyond few months has been on a way to persuade Mom to allow me to shift her lamps and photo frames to create every other shelf.”

I don’t need war due to the fact I know its fee; it’s very pricey. Accept as true with me I know higher because I’ve paid it regularly. Still, do. There is no bill for it, perhaps if there has been, some wouldn’t hate me so much. Numbers make it more plausible.”
Displaying how an awful lot she misses her dad, Capt Mandeep Singh, she writes: “Papa is not Right here with me; he hasn’t been for 18 years. My limited vocabulary of approximately two hundred phrases was given new words called dying, struggle and Pakistan on the times following August 6, 1999. My father is a martyr but I don’t recognize him as that. I know him as the person who wore massive shipment jackets with wallet complete with sweets, whose stubble scratched my nostril whenever he kissed my brow, the instructor who taught me how to sip from a straw and introduced me to chewing gum. I recognize him as my father. I additionally know him as the shoulder my tiny self-clung to extraordinarily tightly hoping if I held him strongly sufficient he gained cross. He went. MEINIR: =After the one Strider kid's announcement about Orphus' whereabouts had reached her ears, it had taken no time at all questioning the locals and figuring out just where it was he happened to be hiding his cowardly flesh sack. Meinir and two of her crew had broken in through the loft window of Dennab's house when they were sure no one was there. It was a simple thing of combined climbs and jumps, and a few deft moments with a lockpick. The three of them sneaking inside and closing the window back up behind them, leaving no trace of their activities. Now Meinir was sitting square in the room, filing her nails with impatient flicks of her tail. The two ladies from her crew standing on either side of the door, back to the wall to keep out of Orphus' field of vision once he were to enter. The stage is set. The yellow bellied little brother will be caught once and for all.=
ORPHUS: -It was later in the day when he returned to Dennab's house. By now his friend had given him a key so it was easy enough to get in and out when he wasn't there, after all Dennab was usually gone and busy by this point. He had left in the middle of the night the day before to go see Taalay on skaia, and it went as well as expected possibly even better considering he was still in the same number of pieces as he was before he left. At this point he was just exhausted from the interaction and he slowly made his way to the guest room where he had been staying the last several weeks.-  ORPHUS: -He's hardly paying attention, rubbing at his tired eyes before removing his hood and opening the door. He gets about two steps into the room before he realizes he's not alone and his eyes fly open to settle on his sister sitting right there in front of him.- ................................... ORPHUS: -Hes so fucked, holy shit. His stomach starts churning and his chest feels tight with anxiety and he hasn't even seen the other two ladies behind him. Is it too late to quickly back out and retreat through the door way, he sure as hell is going to try anyways.-
MEINIR: =She doesn't lift her gaze as the door opens, blue eyes trained on her claws. Blowing on them and looking them over. It sure as hell is too late for Orphus to back out, because the large teal standing behind the door slammed it shut the moment he had stepped inside enough and placed herself in front of it. The psionic looming just in the corner of his vision, energy crackling between her horns. Meinir points at him with her nail file.= |)earest, sweetest little brother. How nice to see that you are still among the living.  MEINIR: \V/hy don't you take a seat? =There's a chair placed right opposite her. How convenient.=
ORPHUS: -Orphus's attention darts between the fellow teal blood and the psionic. This is a very less then ideal situation and there is no possible way for him to escape while surrounded like this.- ORPHUS: -His pulse is racing and he slowly drags his gaze back to his sister and swallows dryly.- Meinir...  ORPHUS: This.  ORPHUS: This is a <ivilian residen<e you should not be trespassing here. -He is not going to sit.-
MEINIR: =Looks up at him, legs crossed and tapping her file slowly against her knee. She's smiling, but everything about her is oozing agitation, like she is ready to leap at him at any moment.= | don't believe you are in any position to start lecturing me about, why, just about anything really! I'm honestly shocked you have the fuckin' nerve to try it right out the gate.  MEINIR: =Gestures to the psion with her file, then at Orphus, then at the chair.= /|/ow. Sit.  MEINIR: =Orphus will find himself surrounded with psionic energy, and will now be attempted lifted and snapped down onto the chair.=
ORPHUS: I am not trying to le<ture you I am telling you that you shouldnt be-- -He really has no way to fight off the psionics surrounding him and moving his body, struggle as he may hes lifted and then dropped into the chair. Of course the moment he is in it he is going to attempt to jump right back up. This is all very stressful for him.- This is redi<ulous!! <ease this!  ORPHUS: -Its hard to tell with the baggy sweatshirt on, but perhaps now that they are closer face to face Meinir might be able to see it in his face how he's lost more weight since they last saw each other.-
MEINIR: =Sorry Orphus, but the psion is definitely going to keep pressure on his shoulders to prevent him from jumping back up, and around his ankles to keep him "chained" to the chair. His commentary makes Meinir laugh, a big booming one, her head falling backwards. Her gaze firm and burning once she stops, pupils only tiny slits.= |Y|ou really have some gall to start making demands from me! I shall cease nothing! Maybe if you had kept your promise I would have given you a more gentle escort back to daddy, but we both very well know there's not a chance in hell of that happening now.  MEINIR: /|\aybe that's why you're squatting up in this shithole, huh? Too afraid of "big bad Meinir" coming to haul you back to face the goddamn music? You really had me with that story y'know! About how this was something you needed, and that you would really, really, keep in touch and let me know that you were still kicking.  MEINIR: \V/HAT A FUCKIN' JOKE!!!
ORPHUS: -His eyes go wide when she says her intentions of carting him back to their father, no, hes not ready for that he can't face his dad yet thats too much. His fear is momentarily forgotten though when she dares to insult his friend's dwelling.-  ORPHUS: It is not a shithole!! -He snarls in response, teeth bared and his volatile reaction a little over played but his entire system is on high alert, any reaction at all is going to be extreme.-
MEINIR: =Snorts.= |>lease. This entire planet smells of animal shit and mud. At least it is an upgrade from LOTAM, seein' as there ain't as many zealots high on fairydust fumes laying around in the street. MEINIR: |T|o think you'd rather spend your time in these hovels than go back home-- \V/hat are you so afraid of anyway? That you failed like, what, once? You're acting as if honor and pride is all that matters!  MEINIR: §o tell me then! \V/hat could you possibly hope to gain from squatting on one planet to the next, wallowing in your own self pity? Like. REALLY? How is THAT going to fix your wounded pride?
ORPHUS: -Growls.- I am aware it wont do anything to fix it. But it is my <hoi<e to live as I please. But tell me what do I even have to go ba<k to?? Even if I were to pro<ure a repla<ement limb who is to say I will ever regain the same use and skills that I had. And more importantly what do I have left with his <rew after I all but formally burned the bridge by abandoning them all in the first pla<e to fool heartily feed my own ego and ambitions by serving with another?? ORPHUS: I have embarrassed myself and my family name with my a<tions. Even if I had the smallest <han<e of rea<hing su<ess at home I've forever ruined it with my past a<tions. ORPHUS: I dont want to fa<e that.... ORPHUS: .......But I told you all of this the first time we met. You released me then, so you had to have some semblan<e of understanding.
MEINIR: ()h!!! Yes! I certainly did! I bought into all of this shit, hoping that you'd find your way and be honest to yourself and your fuckin' family! But WHOOPS!!! MEINIR: |3IG SURPRISE! Orphus is nothing but a COWARD. MEINIR: |Y|ou're not trying to fix anything, you're just running away. You don't even give your family the kindness to let them know you're alive. =Her knuckles are going white around the nailfile, and for a moment her expression twists, brows furrowing as her mouth twitches downwards. A split moment of something stinging at her eyes, a grief that she swallows down, her shoulders now squared.= | kept my promise you know. I did! Because FUCK ME if I didn't always believe you to be honest. I kept my bleedin' mouth shut the whole time, even as I saw how daddy was shutting down more for each day gone without a word!  MEINIR: |Y|ou're a fucking coward Orphus, one that cares more about your own ego than your family.  MEINIR: |)o you honestly think I-- that daddy or Taalay or any of us, are trying to haul you back to force you into somethin' you don't wanna do? To immediately force you back into something that cost you your arm? That's left you looking like-- Like you're not even yourself!  MEINIR: /|/obody GIVES A SHIT about what you did. We all just wanted to know that you were safe! That you're alive and that we would see you again! GOD!!! =She laughs, almost pathetically, looking down into her lap while the muscles in her arms tense.=  MEINIR: |)addy's crew kept muttering about holding a funeral, did you know that?
ORPHUS: -He is quiet over the duration of her short speech. In part because he knows she is absolutely right. He is a damn coward, a fool, a troll too full of himself that it blinded him until the consequences grew too large to come back from.- ORPHUS: -He's dropped his gaze to the floor, fighting back the lump in his throat and trying to ignore the pathetic way his eyes sting as teal colored tears hang at the very edges. It hurts even more to hear about his father, and the pain the rest of his family was put through because of his reckless actions. It had taken him months to understand he wasnt just hurting himself by running away but everyone else suffered for it too. But what could he even do to fix it now?- ORPHUS: .....No. I did not know that. -He sniffs.-
MEINIR: =It's probably a little awkward for the two other trolls in the room witnessing all of this, but they know to keep both their ears and mouths shut. Meinir's grip on the file eases, letting her fists loosen up on her knees. Taking a breath to steady herself.=  MEINIR: |'m taking you back Orphus, whether you like it or not. I'm not going to lie for you anymore, I can't do it. I can lie about a lot of things, more and better than most, but I'm not going to fuckin' play along with this shit anymore. I'm not gonna help you hurt our family, I can't do it.  MEINIR: |Y|ou're going to gather what little of your spine you have left, and you will see daddy, and you'll apologize for dropping off of the fuckin' starcharts. Just as I will for not telling him the truth about you.
ORPHUS: -He doesnt lift his head, he's not even straining against the psionic bonds anymore.-  ORPHUS: M-Meinir please.... dont.  ORPHUS: I-I cant f...fa<e him. -Fuck tears are starting to drip down his face. Orphus shuts his eyes tight to try to stop himself from full out crying but its too late.-
MEINIR: =Honestly, even angry as she is, it hurts seeing him cry. It hurts seeing him cry, hurts seeing him like this, and it hurts knowing that she fed into it when she could have just told everyone the truth. She wants to pinch his cheeks, hug him and say that it's okay! Stop the sniffling and let your sister take care of it! But she can't let herself do it. Keep hurting them all for the sake of a lie. Her voice is almost flat.= |f not now, then when? MEINIR:  /-\fter he's destroyed your mother's ships in his grieving fury? After he's held the funeral for his firstborn? All while I watch, knowing that you're alive, but sworn on my word to keep it secret while our family burns? I gave you time with the lie, Orphus, time that I hoped you'd use to build yourself back up. You can't ask me to give you more. Not this time.
ORPHUS: -He is a mess of snot and tears, its really pitiful to look at and Orphus would give anything to not appear so vulnerable in front of the other two trolls, its quite embarrassing. He didn't mean for things to get this way, for everything to go so far. But every time he thought about facing his problems it felt like the end of the world and so he grew comfortable pretending like he could just brush off his old life and live in the shadows without consequences. It was stupid of him to think he could have ever slowly acclimated to interacting with his family and loved ones again, especially after Joel broadcasted his whereabouts.-  ORPHUS: Im s-sorry I shouldn't have broken your promise I just-- ORPHUS: I didnt mean t-to hurt anyone else...
MEINIR: =She can't bring herself to cry, even if she feels like doing it alongside him. She doesn't really have any right to, having done what she did, or so she feels anyhow. Wearing masks is what she does, and now she is donning one to keep her eyes from watering. Her breathing is steady, her focus on every even inhale and exhale, a form of meditation to place her focus on that rather than her feelings. So she could say her words without emotions muddling them up. She straightens her back, looking right ahead at him.= | know. MEINIR: |'m not going to pretend you didn't truly have a horrible time, that this experience and your feelings are all invalid, but I still think you a coward for running away without a word for so long. This isn't helping you. The longer you run away, isolate yourself, pretend you're dead.... The worse you're just making it for yourself. If I'm not stopping it now, a hard stop, then I don't honestly think you'll ever stop running. =She stands up from her chair.= MEINIR: |Y|ou can hate me if you'd like, but we are going. =Not like he didn't hate her before though, hah...=
ORPHUS: -Hate is a strong word, but he will not correct her. Its not as though his actions or the way he has behaved towards her in their past would prove otherwise. And Meinir has a small point, even now Orphus still wanted to run and hide (perhaps it had something to do with the feeling of being currently trapped against his will but even so) could he ever trust himself to voluntarily go through with returning home? Possibly not...- ORPHUS: -Still, that did not mean he was thrilled about being delivered straight to his father, and while he had nothing more to say he slowly dried his tears gave one last ditched effort at trying to pull free of the invisible restraints holding him into the chair.-
MEINIR: =Having nothing more to say, and Orphus apparently having no words left either, Meinir gives a quick nod in direction of the psion. The yellowblood swiftly applies a sharp jabbing jolt against Orphus' pressure points, not enough to permanently damage, but certainly enough to make him pass out and slouch like a sack of potatoes. Perfect for transport. The teal hoists him over her shoulder, Meinir watching with an expression more blatantly sad and tired than any that had come before. She shakes it off with a sigh.=/-\islin, search the room for belongings and the like. We are taking it, and him, and we are leaving.  MEINIR: =The psion, Aislin, nods, making short process of searching the room with their psionics. Meinir, in the meantime, writes a note which she attatches to the chair via dagger. Polite enough to leave behind an explaination, as the room is left abandoned. The Wave Dancer leaves port only minutes after their boarding.=
