Story Project statement : “Happiness comes when you learn to appreciate the simple things in life”
After my initial brainstorm of “story”, I was quickly reminded of a quote that I had once heard, “Happiness comes when you learn to appreciate the simple things in life.” I refer to this quote on a daily basis. It helps me to recognize the numerous somewhat simple things in my daily life that I am grateful for. Whenever I feel down, gratitude is the one thing that can lift me right back up.
I began by looking at everyday little things that brought me joy through brainstorming, collage and thumb nailing. I created multiple thumbnails and eventually developed a personal logo.
As I developed my studies further, I began to focus on repetitive patterns. The repetition of the pattern represents the daily repetition of the activity involved. I felt these patterns were very communicative and meaningful to my personal life.
Towards the end of my project I edited my quote which originally phrased “little things” and changed it to “the simple things” in life. I felt as though these words had much more depth and suited my pattern designs better.I designed a color scheme and typography to match them and eventually edited them digitally.

Planning for my second poster of the series. I am again developing my previously created repeated patterns. I am using the same style of typography as I had used in my previous poster design.
The slogan this time is “A good book” , highlighting my appreciation for the simple pleasure that is reading a good book.

Here is a finalized poster design for my first poster. This poster communicates the message of the simple happiness that “a good cuppa” brings me each and every morning. It is a simple pleasure that I am grateful for as it helps me to kickstart my day.

Drawing on my past pattern creations I decided to develop them further into a series of two posters. Each poster will convey a message of something simple that Brings me joy in my every day life.
Therese are pages of me experimenting with colour schemes, adjusting the pattern itself and trying out different layouts.
I decided to adjust my quote slightly to “happiness comes when we learn to appreciate the simple things in life” instead of the “little things”. I felt as though this wording was more accurate.
I decided to leave the central cup of coffee a blank white colour in an effort to emphasize the simplistic element to it.

Maija Louekari is a print designer and pattern artist. She studied at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki. She draws inspiration for her designs from people, sounds, feelings and visuals that she is surrounded by in her day to day life. Her patterns are mainly used in interior design.
I am particularly drawn to her combination of black and white with bursts of colour, I find this style very effective and visually appealing. I will draw inspiration form her unique colour use and use of simple geometric repeating patterns.

I decided to create a digital poster from my initial poster idea. Although I liked the logo, once I had a completed poster I realized that the logo did not communicate my message very clearly. After a one on one tutorial with learn I decided to leave this idea. My typography was inspired by Jessica Hische. The logo was fun but did not have a very clear communicative message.

I created a digital version of my chosen logo. The flower represents my appreciation of the beauty of nature. My jeans show how happiness can come from something as simple as the perfect fitting pair of jeans.

Research: Florence Given is a 21 year old British illustrator , activist and feminist. She uses graphic design and illustration as a means of conveying powerful feminist messages. I particularly admire her use of bright colors and retro fonts. Her simplistic messy style of illustration is very effective in grabbing the attention of audiences.

Inspired by Kelly Maker, I created these pieces combining photography, collage and digital drawing.
The images strongly represent little things that bring me joy in life. The towel around my head represents my love of relaxing and pampering myself. I drew on red lipstick to show how I love dressing up and going out. The background is a page from my favorite book “The Tattooist of Aushwitz”.
I am unsure as to which of these images I prefer, the sunglasses represent how I am happiest when outdoors and in the sunshine. The spiral doodles represent how creativity brings me happiness.

After combining 2 thumbnails together and applying my colour palette, I created 4 more developed logos that I felt represented my quote.

I really like bottom right logo as I feel it is a very unique yet simple way of looking at my quote.
