Endlessly fascinated by how this game has managed to translate the "garbage-awful porn brat in over her head" archetype from hentai to roguelike deckbuilder.
#chrono ark#By way of explanation: she tanks by funnelling a portion of the party's damage into stacks of “Inner Desire”#which later turn back into damage aimed all at Momori#She has an easier build which clears the stacks with cards like “Loser <3 Loser <3” and “Momori Defeated...”#or a riskier build which funnels the stacks into dps but can overload and kill her if you don't draw the right cards at the right time#Also her toolkit is full of taunt manipulation#in both “focus that enemy” and “enemies must focus on me” varieties

Three Accidental Shortish Reviews
They asked us to write a few, like, "staff's picks" at the shop and if you know me I love getting to ramble about video games I think people should play. I figured those little blurbs are worth sharing/preserving here too.
So I guess here's three mini reviews/recommendations from yours truly. No spoilers or anything really.
Titanfall 2 feel like if you approached designing a first person shooter with the inventiveness and sheer tightness you find in Mario games. It’s not hard for me to say that Titanfall 2’s campaign is far and away the best FPS campaign I’ve played, with singular levels more memorable than some entire games I’ve played. If you’ve played Apex Legends at all you’ve already got some baseline familiarity with the mechanics at play, although instead of a battle royal playground you’re instead led through impressively thought out levels with gimmicks each more memorable than the last. It’s not the sort of shooter where you’re just hiding behind cover mowing down waves of enemies in a generic warzone. Instead you’re running across walls or jumping into your mech while fighting through an assembly line or playing with reality bending mechanics straight out of Portal.
If you consider yourself a fan of shooters, especially those with satisfying movement and creative levels- Titanfall 2 is a must play. It is as important to the genre as something like Half-Life or the original Modern Warfare, Titanfall 2 not only helped form the basis of modern movement shooters, but its engine and core mechanics have been adapted into further projects from the company. Even if you never touch the multiplayer, Titanfall 2 is a game well worth your time and one that will make you wish for more shooters that are half as creative with their run time and level layouts.
Viva Piñata is one of those little gems that’s only so underappreciated because it lives on the Xbox. If it were a Nintendo title people would be intensely angry every time a new entry wasn’t announced any given Direct. Instead Viva Piñata lives on the console of Halo and Gears of War, and thus this novel little garden tending simulator lives in the periphery of most peoples’ memories. It doesn’t help that the 4Kids produced cartoon anthropomorphized the cute Piñata animals into over the top 4Kids caricatures and likely gave many people an impression that Viva Piñata was something it wasn’t. In the actual game the piñatas act much closer to their real world counterparts than they do cartoon characters, with the game’s main focus centering on cultivating a garden that welcomes a wide variety of piñata to live in it. You’re essentially a backyard ecologist, helping bolster populations and keep the circle of life in check with not too many predator or prey piñata overtaking your garden.
In what feels like a marriage of Pokémon and Harvest Moon, Viva Piñata's a simple game that offers just enough depth to engage more adept players and overflows with charm that’ll enrapture most anyone who likes the idea of tending a fantastical animal sanctuary. If you pick only one Viva Piñata game, Trouble in Paradise is essentially feels like the original game with an added expansion built in. However if you wish to play on modern consoles both games are included in Rare Replay, a collection of 30 games from Rare’s history including Banjo Kazooie, all of which are playable in 3D on your current gen Xbox. And if that wasn’t good enough, Rare Replay comes in a double pack with Gears of War Ultimate Edition that sells for like thirteen dollars. So if everything said about Viva Piñata wasn’t enough to convince you, it also comes with a few dozen other games just in case you weren’t convinced it was worth a shot.
Most everyone well versed in the gaming sphere knows the tale of Final Fantasy’s origins. A desperate Square on the verge of collapse poured all their passion and effort into a last ditch effort- their Final Fantasy. A few decades later and Final Fantasy stands as a monolith of the industry, standing as perhaps the most dominant MMO of the modern day and with more entries than most franchises could ever dream of. So perhaps it was only fitting that for their sixteenth entry they decided to radically shift the course of the franchise. Final Fantasy XVI is no turn based RPG, in fact one could say its RPG elements at times feel borderline vestigial. But despite this brazen turn away from the genre it once defined, Final Fantasy confidently steps into its new future by asking one simple question. What if these fights felt and looked as cool as we always imagined they’d be?
In what feels like an earnest embrace of the bombastic nature of blockbuster games and cinema, Final Fantasy has turned itself into a feverishly fast character action game in the same sorts of conversations as Bayonetta and Devil May Cry. It helps, of course, that both DMC 5’s director and Platinum Games worked on the combat of Final Fantasy XVI. All star developers all came together to create a game that truly feels bombastic and triumphant. The story has shades of Game of Thrones in all the best ways with political machinations a plenty and villains so vile you’ll want to yell at the screen. Each combat encounter is a frantic dash as you cycle through abilities and dodge massive attacks at the last possible second. When you get in the zone the game feels incredible, with such freedom of expression in your combat even from early stages that by the time you hit midgame you’re swimming in ways to style on all of Final Fantasy’s most iconic foes. If any game justifies the PS5, it is Final Fantasy XVI. It’s an angry game about overthrowing horribly corrupt systems, a game about not just earning a good death, but living a good life- and what doing so requires. And even if you don’t care about that narrative stuff, it’s the most electrifying action game I’ve played since Hades. Final Fantasy may have stepped away from what it is known for, but I am confident it was a step firmly in the right direction.

Minecraft Gaming PC: My Favourite Biomes
When I first started playing on my Minecraft Gaming PC, I had no idea how much time I would end up investing in this endlessly creative game. What began as a casual curiosity quickly turned into an obsession as I discovered the vastness of the world and the limitless possibilities for exploration and creation. Minecraft offered a perfect blend of simplicity and depth, allowing me to relax while also challenging my creativity. It was the freedom to build, explore, and survive in a world entirely of my own making that made Minecraft so enjoyable.
What is Minecraft?
For those who may not be familiar, Minecraft is a sandbox video game developed by Mojang Studios, where players can explore a blocky, procedurally-generated 3D world. The game offers two main modes: Survival and Creative. In Survival mode, players must gather resources to build shelters, craft tools, and fend off hostile creatures while managing their health and hunger. In Creative mode, the focus shifts entirely to building, with unlimited resources and no threats from enemies, allowing players to construct anything they can imagine.
The world of Minecraft is divided into various "biomes," each with its own unique terrain, climate, and wildlife. These biomes range from lush forests and rolling plains to snowy tundras and arid deserts. It’s this variety in biomes that makes the game’s world so rich and immersive. As I spent more time in Minecraft, I found myself gravitating towards certain biomes, each offering something special that made it stand out as a favourite of mine.
My Top 5 Favourite Biomes in Minecraft
Over my many hours of gameplay, I’ve explored countless biomes, each with its own distinct charm. However, there are five biomes that I keep coming back to, each for different reasons. Here’s a detailed look at my top five favourite biomes in Minecraft and why I love them so much.
1. The Forest Biome
The Forest biome is often one of the first biomes players encounter when starting a new world, and it holds a special place in my heart. This biome is teeming with life, from the towering oak and birch trees to the various animals like sheep, pigs, and chickens that roam freely. What I love most about the Forest biome is its versatility. The abundance of wood makes it an ideal place to start building your first home, and the dense foliage provides both a scenic backdrop and a natural shelter from the elements. The Forest biome is also a great place to gather resources early in the game, making it one of the most practical and visually pleasing biomes to settle in.
2. The Plains Biome
The Plains biome is a vast, open area with gently rolling hills and expansive grasslands. It’s one of my favourite biomes for building large structures because of its flat terrain. Whether I’m constructing a sprawling village, a grand castle, or a network of farms, the Plains biome offers the perfect canvas for ambitious building projects. Another reason I love this biome is its abundance of passive mobs, such as cows and horses, which are useful for food and transportation. The wide-open spaces also make it easy to spot any approaching dangers, giving you plenty of time to prepare.
3. The Desert Biome
The Desert biome may seem barren at first glance, but it’s one of the most intriguing biomes in Minecraft. I’m drawn to the Desert biome because of its unique challenges and the hidden treasures it offers. The lack of vegetation and water makes survival more difficult, but it also pushes you to be more resourceful. One of the main attractions of the Desert biome is the Desert Temples, ancient structures filled with traps and valuable loot. These temples add an element of adventure and risk that I find thrilling. Additionally, the striking contrast between the golden sand dunes and the clear blue skies creates a stark and beautiful landscape, making it a visually appealing place to explore and build.
4. The Taiga Biome
The Taiga biome is a cold, forested area covered with towering spruce trees and dotted with patches of snow. I love the Taiga biome for its serene, wintery atmosphere. The tall trees provide plenty of wood for building, and the snowy landscape offers a peaceful, almost mystical setting for creating rustic cabins or cosy log houses. The Taiga biome is also home to wolves, which can be tamed and kept as loyal companions, adding a bit of companionship to the sometimes lonely world of Minecraft. The combination of snowy scenery and the opportunity for unique builds makes the Taiga biome one of my favourites.
5. The Mushroom Fields Biome
The Mushroom Fields biome is one of the rarest and most unique biomes in Minecraft. It’s an island covered in large, red and brown mushrooms, with mycelium instead of grass. What makes this biome so special is the fact that hostile mobs do not spawn here, making it a peaceful haven in an otherwise dangerous world. The Mushroom Fields biome is perfect for players who want to build in a safe environment without the constant threat of creepers or zombies. Additionally, the quirky, otherworldly appearance of the giant mushrooms provides an unusual and whimsical setting for creative builds. The Mushroom Fields biome is a place where you can let your imagination run wild, making it a truly special spot in the game.

Anonymous asked: I love your long posts which make for great reading and I wish you could do more because you’ve got such a range of astonishing interests. I’m hoping because you’ve served in the military you would have studied military thinkers. Do you think the Art of War by Sun Tzu is way overrated by everyone? I studied him a bit for my masters but I still couldn’t get my head around him. Interested to know your thoughts. Thanks!
“To lift an autumn hair is no sign of great strength; to see the sun and moon is no sign of sharp sight; to hear the noise of thunder is no sign of a quick ear." - Sun Tzu's Art of War, Chapter IV - Tactical Disposition, Clause 10.
Sounds cool, doesn’t it?
But what the hell does this quote really mean? Do you know what it means? Can anyone else tell me?
Look, I enjoy a good Sun Tzu quote as the next person. Only recently I was exchanging thoughts with a fellow blogger whose studying Thucydides, Clausewitz, and Kissinger for an advanced course at the US Naval War College. Even he prefers Sun Tzu over Clausewitz. I can see why too. If you can make sense of chapter one of Clausewitz’s tome On War you deserve a Nobel Prize.
Unlike my very learned fellow blogger, there are lot of folk who don’t know Sun Tzu at all. They can quote him, but almost certainly out of context. As someone who partly grew up in the Far East and even learned Chinese and Japanese (a pitiful but functional degree of fluency) I’m embarrassed (not hard since I’m English) when I hear other Western compatriots romanticise and elevate Eastern icons to mythic status that the Chinese themselves have never done.
I am even more bemused than embarrassed after having hung up my military uniform for ‘civvy’ corporate clothing at how badly abused Sun Tzu’s book is in the corporate world. In my workplace I grit my teeth at corporate high flyers who mistake a balance sheet for a real battlefield by quoting Sun Tzu out of their arse, and then as self-styled ‘corporate warriors’ work themselves up in a lather of testosterone induced self-importance to crush their corporate enemies into the dust.
This is why the The Art of War by Sun Tzu has invited a jaundiced eye roll. And rightly so. I can see why many view Sun Tzu as over-rated because many easily impressed people go all woo woo over anything ancient and Eastern.
It’s become a familiar trope to say the art of ‘strategy’ as a science began 2,500 years ago with the writing of The Art of War. I would dispute this. Not that the writing of Art of War was the earliest written but whether I would call it a manual of strategy per se - more on this below in my answer. However you rate or overrate the Art of War it’s important to have perspective and remember this book is written in 512 BC. Other than the bible and some religious books, there are not many books that can survived thousands of years and still remains a steady bestseller and enjoys a wide influence in military academies and army staff colleges today and even as far into board rooms.
The question behind your question is just as interesting to me: why did Sun Tzu and his Art of War gain such traction in the West?
Sun Tzu (544-496 BC) wrote the original text of The Art of War shortly before 510 BC. During most of the past two thousand years, the common people in China were forbidden to read Sun Tzu's text. However, the text was preserved by China's nobility for over 2,500 years. The Chinese nobility preserved the text of The Art of War, known in Chinese as Bing-fa, even despite the famous book-burning by the first Emperor of Chi around 200 BC. The text was treasured and passed down by the Empire’s various rulers. Unfortunately, it was preserved in a variety of forms. A "complete" Chinese language version of the text wasn't available until the 1970s. Before that, there were a number of conflicting, fragmentary versions in different parts of China, passed down through 125 generations of duplication.
Indeed at the beginning of the twentieth century, there were two main textual traditions in circulation, known as the (Complete Specialist Focus) and (Military Bible) versions. There were also perhaps a dozen minor versions and both derived and unrelated works also entitled Bing-fa. Of course, every group considered (and still considers) its version the only accurate one.
When I last visited China before the Covid pandemic for work reason, I had time off to go to a couple of museums that housed the fruits of a number of archeological digs uncovering the tombs of the ancient rulers of China in which sections of Sun Tzu’s works were found. These finds have verified the historical existence of the text and the historical accuracy of various sections. I understand new finds are still being made.
The first complete, consistent Chinese version was created in Taipei in the 1970s. It was titled The Complete Version of Sun Tzu’s Art of War." It was created by the National Defence Research Investigation Office, which was a branch of Taiwan's defence department. This version compared the main textual traditions to each other and to archeological finds and compiled the most complete version possible.
This work was completed in Taiwan rather than mainland China for a number of reasons. Mainland China was still in the throws of the Maoist Cultural Revolution, which actively suppressed the study of traditional works such as Sun Tzu. The mainland had also moved to a reformed character set, while Taiwan still used the traditional character set in which the text was written. Only today is the study of Sun Tzu in mainland China growing, interestingly enough, through the translation of Sun Tzu into contemporary Mandarin. Based on the archeological sources we have today, we are reasonably certain of the historical accuracy of this compiled version that is the basis of what most people use today.
Surprisingly, the Art of War only came to light in the West around the 18th Century.
Historians believe it was first formally introduced in Europe in 1772 by the French Jesuit Joseph-Marie Amiot. It was translated at the time by the title “The thirteen articles of Sun-Tse”. Joseph-Marie Amiot (1718-1793) was not just a Jesuit priest but also an astronomer and French historian, as well as fervent missionary in China. He was one of the last survivors of the Jesuit Mission in China (he died in Beijing).
Many of the historical problems with understanding Sun Tzu's work can be trace back to its first Western translation in French. A Jesuit missionary, Father Amiot, first brought The Art of War to the West, translating it into French in 1782. Unfortunately, this translation started the tradition of mistranslating Sun Tzu's work, starting with the title, The Art of War (Art de la guerre).
This title, copied the title of a popular work by Machiavelli (a criminally underrated writer on military strategy), but it didn't reflect Sun Tzu's Bing-fa, which would be better translated as "competitive methods."
We cannot say what effect being translated by a Jesuit priest had upon the text. It was unavoidable that the work's translation reflected the military prejudices of the time era when war was both popular and Christian. It was also unavoidable that most future translations would reflect some of the first translation's prejudices. However, war was on the verge of becoming much less Christian in the West since this time was the era of the French Revolution (1789).
The work might well of slipped into obscurity after its initial publication, but it was discovered by a minor French military officer. After studying it, this officer rose to the head of the revolutionary French army in a surprising series of victories. The legend is that Napoleon used the work as the key to his victories in conquering all of Europe. It is said that he carried the little work with him everywhere but kept its contents secret (which would be very much in keeping with Sun Tzu's theories).
However, Napoleon must have started believing his own reviews instead of sticking with his study of Sun Tzu. His defeat at Waterloo was clearly a case of fighting on a battleground that the enemy, Wellington, knew best. Wellington’s trick at Waterloo was hiding his forces by having them lie down in the slight hollows of this hilly land. This is exactly the type of tactic Sun Tzu warns against in his discussion of terrain tactics.
After Napolean, Sun Tzu's theories made their way into western military philosophy. Many of his ideas are reflected in the ideas of work of Carl von Clausewitz. who defined military strategy as "the employment of battles to gain the end of war."
The first English translation of The Art of War is less than a hundred years old. Captain E. F. Calthrop published the first English translation in 1905. Lionel Giles, an assistant curator at the British Museum and a well-known sinologist and translator, attacked this early translation, and he published his own version in 1910. It soon began to be read alongside Clausewitz’s 8 volumes of turgid German military prose.
It wasn’t long before military thinkers were ditching Clausewitz for Sun Tzu because no one could get past Chapter One of Clausewitz’s On War. The “Clausewitz is dead, long live Sun Tzu” school was first championed by the influential British military theorist B.H. Liddell Hart in the 1920s. Basil Henry Liddell Hart (1895-1970) was a captain in the British Army. He was a very influential military theorist and historian, and author of several books such as The Future of War (1925) and Strategy (1954). Having witnessed first-hand the mechanised onslaught of the Great War, Liddell Hart sought a philosophy of warfare based in the prudent use of technology, psychology and deception - and the avoidance of the 'total war' catastrophes of preceding decades.
The main idea of Liddell Hart is to bring the set of principles of warfare in a so-called ‘indirect approach’ to the enemy. His advocacy in his scholarly work of an ‘indirect strategy’ over direct, frontal operations, was a reaction to the high casualties of the Western Front in the First World War. But his ideas were not simply about physically outmanoeuvring an opponent. Instead he pushed for a psychological scheme: to strike from unexpected directions, to generate strategic dissonance, and to induce paralysis. Hart’s well-known thoughts are “Only short-sighted soldiers underestimate the importance of psychological factors in time of war”, “Originality is the most important from all military virtues”, and “The principles of war could shortly be condensed in a single word: concentration”.
Liddell Hart believed that distilling historical insights of strategy and operations would offer the chance to avoid the costly disasters of modern war and ensure a more cost-effective route to success. He imagined technological solutions in the form of air power and mechanised land forces outflanking and shocking an enemy at the tactical level. This would be complemented by taking indirect strategic ‘ways’. Like his contemporary J.F.C. Fuller, Liddell Hart considered concentrations of air and armoured forces driving deep into enemy territory to destroy their ‘nervous system’. The psychological aspects of this were central, since acquiring an advantage demanded moves that were unexpected, with precise attacks at the most vulnerable points. As the most influential military writer of the modern age, revered and reviled by three generations of strategists, armchair and armipotent, his controversial theories of armed attack laid the foundation of the famed German Blitzkrieg.
Hart’s championing of Sun Tzu’s work as articulated through his own works got a new lease of life as the world gingerly settled into the ice bath of the Cold War. The rise of Communist China, against all the odds having defeated the well disciplined nationalist armies of Chian kai-Shek, was a wake up call for the West. There was a general befuddlement among western military analysts to explain the secret of Maoist success. There was an intellectual inquest in the 1950s and 1960s for some way to explain (and, it was hoped, learn to counter) Maoist military doctrine. Sun Tzu was seen as one of the historical and cultural sources of some particularly Chinese or Asian way of war, and his work made its way into Western discussions of counterinsurgency and asymmetric warfare.
Into the breach - and with fortuitous timing - appeared a new translation of The Art of War that was to become the defining translation right down to our day. Liddel Hart provided the foreword to Samuel Griffth’s 1963 translated copy of the Art of War. It was to quickly become a key text in US war colleges and this version is still to this day favoured by most of these institutions. We also studied Griffith’s translation at Sandhurst alongside Liddell Hart’s ideas.
There is no question that Griffith’s translation has become the standard go to translation to this day in military circles - that is until James Clavell’s more populist and looser translation came along in the 1980s. One can see why. Griffith’s translation provided a number of historical Chinese commentaries on the text. It should also be noted that Griffith’s strengths was his immense experience in the military and knowledge of military history as a brigadier general in the U.S. Marine Corps.
However, this was also his version's greatest flaw. Like many other critics I have the impression that Griffith did not really believe or understand all of Sun Tzu. Indeed he would often explain away Sun Tzu's direct statements without making it clear that this was his commentary and not what Sun Tzu wrote. The other main criticism and this one is stylistic and therefore just my opinion, Griffith was also not much of a writer. By our standards today, much of Griffith’s language can seem awkward and dated.
Looking back it feels ironic of the US military were wrapping their heads around Sun Tzu as way to get inside the Chinese communist mind (of Mao the military strategist especially). Unknown to them Mao had desperately tried everything to get hold of a copy of the Art of War from the Chinese Nationalists. Cambridge historian and doyenne of intelligence history, Christopher Andrew in his book The Secret World: A History of Intelligence, wrote that the theory that Sun Tzu’s The Art of War was critical to mastering contemporary warfare is propagated through the use of a tantalising anecdote: “During the civil war between Communists and the Kuomintang regime [Mao Zedong] sent aides into enemy territory to find a copy of it.” The ancient text, ostensibly, was of such vital importance that Mao was willing to risk men’s lives to obtain it, while Chiang Kai-shek vowed to protect it all costs. It’s a questionable anecdote at best as there are no historical evidence of it.
We can say that the notion that Sun Tzu’s slim treatise is considered both potent and slightly dangerous - providing the master key to unlocking victory in war through the ages - is a compelling myth that refuses to die. Mao most likely never ordered a clandestine operation to pilfer the text, nor did Chiang Kai-shek give any thought to shielding its contents from prying eyes. Both men certainly read it long before the start of their civil war, both most likely had ready access to it during the conflict, and neither man won or lost based on adherence or divergence from its teachings. But undoubtedly it set the hearts of Western military theorists aflutter in trying to unlock the secrets of Eastern military thought.
Sun Tzu and his ideas in a reincarnated form took hold of the wider public imagination in the 1980s. The 1980s was synonymous with Japan. With the perceived rise of Japan as a global economic power and the changes in post-Mao China, there was a Western (meaning American) search for more explanations. What was the secret of Asia’s rise? How were Japan and China ‘doing’ this?
In Western business circles it was for a time trendy to read it because of the perception that it was part of what made Japanese businesses so successful during the 70s and 80s. Management gurus and other corporate consultants certainly latched on to it and touted it as a way for Western businesses to re-orient their entire management and business philosophy. I don’t know if that ever actually was the case in Japan - my father who worked in both China and Japan in the corporate world at a very senior level said it wasn’t - but what is true is that in the West as the Japanese economy languished into the lost decade of the 90s so too did interest in Japanese business practices, and thus Sun Tzu.
The idea that The Art of War was a kind of how-to guide to ‘strategy’ was made especially popular by Hollywood in the 1980s. Oliver Stone’s iconic film ‘Wall Street’ seemed to typify the ‘greed is good’ New York capitalist scene of the 80s and 90s. Hollywood mirror imaged the rise of the corporate raiders and junk bond kings like Ivan Boesky and Michael Milken. Hollywood sent thousands of American businessmen off to read Sun Tzu to look for ‘leadership secrets’. This is part of a general Western fascination with ‘timeless Asian wisdom’, the American idea that ‘the mysterious East’ is possessed of secret knowledge. American and European businessmen were enamoured of the idea that “a battle is won or lost before it ever begins”, a saying that reinforced traditional American business attitudes about a winning mentality and a ‘can-do’ spirit being two keys to success.
Because Japan and China were trendy in the 1980s and 1990s it also influenced Western popular culture, not just fashion (think Kenzo) but also comic books (manga) and anime. In this Eastern friendly climate it led a number of popular fiction authors to release their ‘own’ versions of the work to capitalise on its newfound popularity. These versions were more about the pop culture of the era than Sun Tzu. Unfortunately, though popular, none of these versions took advantage of the work completed in Taiwan creating a definitive version of Sun Tzu's text by this time. These versions were based either on old English translations (the Calthorp and Giles versions) or incomplete Chinese sources. However, all of these versions remain popular today, despite their questionable sources and poor quality of translation.
In 1983, James Clavell updated The Art of War translation of Lionel Giles and published it in a very popular version. This started a very common practice in English translation: creating a ‘new’ version from other English translations instead of going back to the original source. Authors today continue to follow this practice, which only perpetuates and exaggerates the problems with early translations.
Thomas Cleary, another well-known author, did his own The Art of War translation with historical commentary in 1988. Again, his name recognition did much to increase awareness of Sun Tzu, even if his work did nothing to improve the general quality of the translation.
Looking back the whole Sun Tzu as a business model fetish in the 1980-90s was really pretty silly, rather like 80s shoulder pads. Of course, there are some similarities in leadership regardless of profession, but the basic goals and working environments of war and of business are so wildly different that applying Sun Tzu to business is superficial at best.
So to me the problem is not that Sun Tzu is ‘overrated’ per se, the problem is that every half baked author out there try to apply its principles to every problems that mankind have. The Art of War, as the title suggest, is not The Art of Managing your Business, the Art of Winning in Competition against your classmates, The Art of picking up Women, The Art of Living Life to the fullest. It is, and only is, The Art of War. It is ‘overrated’ only if you expect it to answer every problems in your life.
The Art of War is not the word of God. It is a war manual advocating common sense with pithy aphorisms - and a very good one.
It’s not that I think the Art of War is over-rated it’s that the more common problem is that many people vastly under-rate Sun Tzu. By misreading Sun Tzu thoughts and ideas, I believe many are in effect under-rating the problems which Sun Tzu is addressing, namely war, or the continuum of conflict resolution where divergence in interests of multiple parties extends to the possible use of lethal force on a massive scale. A lot of people trivialise this problem with idiocies like “what if someone threw a war and nobody came” (clue, they would win, then hunt down and enslave or kill everyone too foolish to contest the issue, as has happened countless times in human history) or “ban war” (said ban apparently enforced by throwing flowers at soldiers).
Understanding that war is a very real and intractable problem is necessary to fully appreciate the genius of Sun Tzu’s work, especially where it avoids fixed and easily definable tactics specific to the Warring States period and instead illustrates timeless concepts of out-thinking the enemy at every level of conflict. That the text is still mostly readily applicable or at least reasonably insightful after thousands of years is a testament to the inability of humans to push warfare beyond the fundamental aspects of conflicting interests and continuum of forcible resolution Sun Tzu addresses.
Still, the particular translation matters far less than having an appreciation that, in war, you have an active opponent who is trying to out-think and counter any moves you make, and having an appreciation of non-dualistic philosophical reasoning more characteristic of Chinese classics generally. The classic symbol of Yin-Yang (and a number of derivative versions) illustrates apparent dualism as being a part of a deeper structural unity which does not permit a fixed division into separate parts.
Hence the difficulty of applying the principles of the Art of War to artificial ideas of “winning/losing” (or war/peace, right/wrong, us/them) as categorical absolutes rather than negotiated possibilities in a continuum of desirability/costs. And it is very difficult, no one should sugar coat that. Humans sort and construct their perceptions of reality by appeal to such gross simplifications. Binary logic is an immensely powerful tool in many areas because it leverages the ability to simplify complexity and then build valid inferences based on fixed premises. But at some point you have to go beyond that to have a more fluid response to reality as it is. Which Sun Tzu does for the reality of war.
I would recommend anyone to read it. At the end of the day it’s a book of highly general aphorisms that effectively synopsise the essential insights that apply to all kinds of human conflicts. Turning an enemy's flank has the exact same effect in 2500 B.C. and in 2000 C.E. and it has the same effect in the boardroom, or public market as it does on the battlefield. Deception and intelligence are still used in exactly the same way, whether conquering foreign lands, or stealing market share from a competitor. It's a book about common sense; but common sense must seem profound to those who have none.
Overall, I think Sun Tzu’s Art of War is a worthy read and not overrated because in our society of over educated achievers, common sense is in as short of supply as it has ever been; if this book can provide the meaningful framework for educating very bright people in down to earth common sense, that can only be a good thing.
The value of the book then is to drive home the fact that, in human conflict, there really is Nothing New Under the Sun (Tzu).
Pardon the pun and thanks for your question.

“Nice plan.”

Being in the heart of the battlefield is common for you, but not for your associate; Crosshair enjoys his comfort up on cliffs, tucked away, viewing the world through his rifle's scope. Sure, he's been shot at before, and he's got the wounds to prove it, but the world is extremely different for him, now that he's trailing behind you through the centre of it. Well, soon to be the centre of it. Everybody has split up, taking their positions and waiting for said target to arrive. The streets of Coruscant are busy, as always, making it easier to weave through undetected. You're trying to find a ledge to overlook the club that the target is in, and once you're ready, you'll com Hunter and watch as he goes inside to draw the target out. The only problem is that there's a lack of ladders around these buildings, and you can't exactly scale up one of the walls without looking... odd.
So, you and Crosshair continue peering down alleys, searching for something to give you that boost to the upper levels. You can sense how tense Crosshair is; he's not fond of people, nor crowds, and thankfully they don't pay him much attention, despite being fully kitted out - Coruscant is used to the sight of armoured men, clone or not. You overhear Crosshair grumble under his breath, his patience running dry as you turn another corner to find nothing of use, only people mindlessly wandering by. However, an unfortunate thing does cross your eye as you go to turn around the next corner, only to stop in your tracks, letting out a sharp exhale as Crosshair accidentally bumps into you. "Why have you stopped?" he questions, and you can hear the annoyance in his tone, despite his voice being distorted through his helmet. You peer behind the corner again, double-checking what thought you just saw. Yep, your target's friends have begun heading your way, presumably going to meet up with the target in the club. "We have company," you explain, and begin heading back down the alley you just came from, Crosshair following behind. Thankfully, your target nor his friends know about you and your posse, nor do they know that they're being tracked - soon to be captured. You have the advantage of being anonymous, another pair of strangers throughout the sea of people that cover every square inch of Coruscant, but you still don't want to do anything that may draw attention - such as trailing them. "Just let them walk past, they don't know who we are," Crosshair suggests, walking beside you rather than behind. "And we should keep it that way. We don't want to look suspicious-" "-Doesn't this look suspicious? Coming back the way we came?" He has a point. Another small alley catches your attention, one that you're yet to go down, and you drag Crosshair by his wrist, pulling him down the surprisingly quiet passage. It backs onto a bunch of shops, with loth-cats rummaging through bins, and strangers sat on their back porches. "Are they still following us?" you question. Crosshair peers slightly over his shoulder. "Yes," he states. "You're taking us down an alley that leads to the back of the club. Have you not been paying attention to where we've been walking?" "I was more focused on finding a ladder." Crosshair lets out a defeated sigh. "We should have scaled a wall. It's Coruscant, people do weird things here all the time." As true as his statement may be, your target and his friends would definitely suspect something if they saw two strangers scaling up a wall, especially when they have bounties on their heads. A ladder it is, hopefully. Your comlink flashes, and Hunter questions what's taking so long. After explaining that Coruscant is lacking in the ladder department, and that your target has a few broody looking friends, he suggests that you two find somewhere safe to hide instead. Hunter needs to draw the target out before his buddies arrive, so the mission goes on without you two. No bother, this isn't the first time they've had to leave one of you out, or two... The alley finally leads to the back of the club, and there's a hefty crowd of people. This is the smoking area, possibly? But the sight of another alley catches your attention, a thin one, somewhat safe and hidden behind the thickness of strangers. You two begin weaving your way through, eventually coming to a halt between the tight walls. You prop yourself against one, and Crosshair takes the other, your feet touching subconsciously. It's a tight squeeze. You let out a deep breath, thankful that you're not buried under a helmet or a heap of armour; Crosshair seems indifferent, looking out over the sea of people and watching as the targets friends begin heading inside the club. Phew, you went unnoticed, just two strangers making their way through the universe. "One of them is coming this way," Crosshair unfortunately announces, his eyes meeting yours under the thickness of his visor. "I told you we shouldn't have come back the way we came." Shit. Ugh. Hunter told you two to stay safe and hidden, and this is definitely not heading in the direction that you want it to go. You look at your surroundings, attempting to find an escape route, but all you can see is a variety of strangers, busy chatting away, mingling, unaware of the danger that surrounds them. Wait. Maybe you can make it look as if you're just another pair of strangers in this crowd, and it'll be hard for your tailgater to begin asking questions and making accusations if both your mouths are occupied. "Take off your helmet," you order, and frown as Crosshair laughs from beneath it. "This isn't a very smart plan. I'd prefer having my helmet on if this stranger is going to start-" "-Just take it off! Trust me!" You cut him off, and watch as Crosshair grumbles whilst removing his helmet, cooping it beneath his arm. "Now what?" Crosshair questions, unimpressed as ever. You peek over the crowd and pull a worried expression as the stranger continues nearing, struggling to get through the thickness of people, and even barging a few clueless people out of the way. People always seem to forget that manners are a blessing. There's a sickly feeling in your stomach, both nervous about kissing your associate, and nervous that he'll reject you. How are you meant to explain this plan? Ask him to kiss you? Attempt to explain your silly thoughts to him? There's no time, and words fail you. Crosshair raises a brow as you babble "sorry," split seconds before stepping between his feet, placing a soft hand on his armoured chest, and pressing your lips to his. Crosshair freezes. He's tense, thick, eyes widening. You're kissing him. If his lip weren't occupied then he'd laugh and comment "brilliant plan," because it really is, but instead he stupidly stands there, as if he's forgotten how to function, let alone kiss back. And unknown to you, he has butterflies churning in his stomach, along with a thick lump in his throat. But he finally kisses back, his spare gloved hand moving up to cup the back of your head as he moves his lips against yours. Just in time, too, as the stranger who was about to begin asking questions realizes that you're just another pair of lovesick fools in this sea of people. He rolls his eyes at the sight before beginning his journey back through the crowd, heading into the club to unfortunately find that the rest of his crew has gone missing. Neither of you peek open your eyes to wonder if the stranger has gone away, but nobody has attempted to catch your attention, meaning the stranger must be gone. He's gone, you two are safe, and neither of you are moving away. The grip on the back of your head tightens, and Crosshair gambles a bold move by lightly running his tongue across your lower lip, only to be welcomed into your mouth. You can feel the corners of his lips move, turning upwards, smiling as you allow him to make the kiss messier. It's needy, desperate, and something that you've both been craving for a long time. "I think he's gone," Crosshair quietly mutters against your lips, not giving you the ability to answer as he kisses you again. Sadly, the sound of your comlink beeping forces your lips to part, and you remain pressed up against Crosshair as you answer. It's Hunter, ordering you two to return to the ship. They have the target, the mission was successful in every aspect. Every. Aspect. "We should get back. You know what Hunter's like if he's kept waiting," Crosshair comments. His hand removes itself from the back of your head, and he gives your hip a comforting squeeze before fully moving away. "Yeah, come on," you sigh, and unwantingly pull your body away from his. You're about to begin heading through the crowd once more, but Crosshair lightly tugs your wrist. "Nice plan," he comments, a smug expression across his lips. The expression disappears as he puts his helmet back on, although you know he's going to be looking smug for a long time. You did kiss him, after all, but he also kissed you back. "Thanks," you reply. "You played your role well," you jab back, earning your own smug expression before turning your focus to heading through the sea of people, overhearing Crosshair laugh behind you, his hand slipping down your wrist to entwine his fingers between yours, keeping you close.

Gale Reviews: ML Season 4 Episode 11: Guiltrip
Spoilers below (because its out of order and it just got subbed)
-So class is going on and Rose got a headache. (Alya and Nino passing NOTES. Alynino get your JUICE)
-Marinette daydreaming about Adrien. So nothing out of the ordinary
-So Rose calls her headache Miss Dora. Okay this whole exchange with Rose is so cute.
- Juleka eating lunch, (you know we never really see the students eat lunch often.) And then Juleka got the sorrow clouds! OH NO! WHAT IS HAPPENING!
-Marinette trying to cheer up Juleka, back fires spectacularly. Oh Kwami.
-Jeez what happened to ROSE?
-Shadowmoth on cue because he really gonna capitalize on that suffering.
-Shadowmoth AKUMA DONT HELP, ONLY THERAPY DOES.
-Marinette got the bubbles for adrien still. She is still into him.
-Yo She CORRECTED her stammer! Marinette is getting better.
-Well this adrinette is delicious
-Marinette is keeping focus, and correcting her stammers. This is growth. Im glad for her.
-Juleka "I want to be alone" (Marinette texts the class)
-OH S*** Rose is at the Hospital! What the s*** Shadowmoth! Way to bury the lead? Side note: Everyone is just There suddenly
-Okay so basically Rose got sick when she was younger and that sickness can come back at any time, Rose made Juleka promise not to tell anyone about it, which she failed. And the class promises not to treat her any differently.
-And that is how you stop an akuma. Man The class is so supportive and caring for one another. The writers really just said (F*** class salt in particular) must be a sucky season to be a class salter
-And Julrose cuteness. And now everyone is being extra nice to rose which basically NEGATES what they said earlier. But you really can't fault them.
-Juleka is like 'Everyone, calm the f*** down' and its starting to get a little... obvious.
-THEY ALL GOT HER APPLES. I wonder if they are being to subtle (Not)
-Rose figured out something is up.
-Okay so I had to pause this because I LOVE JULEKA AND ROSE'S CONVERSATION! It starts like it is going to go the way of Rose feeling hurt and betrayed, but she pivots and realizes she had Juleka always worrying and that wasn't fair to her. So Rose doesn't get mad at Juleka but decides to clear the air and fix things.
-Rose got MASSIVE strength for a sick girl.
- Again, The class is a supportive group of friends. The writers really said f*** the class salt AGAIN.
-And now they are studying viruses in class. (I can picture how this is going to go)
-And this went how I expected it to go. I cracked up.
- And Now Juleka runs off because guilt
-Chloé and Sabrina didn't move and were like "WTH"
-Thats a weird way to say Girlfriend, but hey, Shadowmoth Aint the smartest bug
-Oh an amok!
-So the sentimonster is called Guiltrip
-And Reflekta again
-Wow Reflekta just Sent herself first! OH DAMN! Shadowmoth was like 'Wait no but my jewelry!?"
-The entire class save Sabrina, Chloé and Lila just up and ditched to go help Juleka. This class sugar is making me diabetic and I LOVE IT
-Rose straight up went in after Juleka (Respect)
-Ah yes the tried and true ladybug strategy. JUMP INTO ITS MOUTH. (but in this case portal)
-Shadowmoth is just like 'YESS ALL ACCORDING TO KEIKAKU." but he really is like, thank goodness that worked.
-Ivan sweetie no. It isn't your fault.
-so the bubbles turn them into Reflekta when they overtake you? But also make you feel guilty.
-NINO! OMG! Nino just said he feels guilty that he couldn't help Adrien face his dad. Adrino stans we got some juice! Adrien knows man. That hurt.
-Did... Did Chat noir just try to.... That is DARK
-Wow... this sentimonster making Ladybug and chat noir give up
-OMG ROSE WEAPONIZED POSITIVITY! SHE IS GOING SUPER ROSE! HOW?! WHY?! IDK BUT ROSE GOT THAT MLP FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC POWER.
-Yum, that is some tasty ladynoir. Well fed this season.
-I do really like how Ladybug transforms after using Lucky charm. It looks better then her standard suit. Wish we knew HOW she got that upgrade. But hey, out of order episodes, what will ya do.
-I already love Daizzi and Rose together. The pig Kwami is precious.
-Okay, I like the costume. Pigella shirt adds some flair. Gives more variety to the female costumes, which we needed. Plus the clap is cute
-Reflekta got that MEGA GUILT
-So her power is gift. but basically shows them their hearts desire.
-Omg, I just realized, Pigella is the ultimate enemy of Shadowmoth. She makes things happy while he thrives on suffering.
-Okay, I like Rose's costume, but ... those eyes creep me OUT.
-The cute Julrose is cute
-OH SO THATS HOW THE PICKAXE WAS USED? How simple.
-Reflekta charm! Juleka won't be victimized by Hawkmoth. So it is a permanent ward then?
-Rose is SLICK! 100 stealth on that miraculous hand off.
-Oh now they teasing her. Thats what Rose wanted. Cute
-Chloé is mad that no one laughs when she says stuff like that.
-ADRIEN! YOU SAVAGE. Sassdrien is real!
___________________________________________________________
Okay so I really enjoyed this episode.
I will say I wanted some more romantic Julrose, but you know, I gotta say. This was an excellent episode for both Juleka and Rose. The class also got to be supportive but in a believable way. Really got to show them more as characters.
The ladynoir and Adrienette was on point. And I think this might be one of the better hero intros.
overall 8/10
I felt that the conflict was handled a bit too quick and kind of anti-climactic. I would have loved to see more build up to Ladybug and Chat noir almost succumbing to despair. But it was good stuff
It is a solid episode and while I personally enjoyed other episodes more, this one was pretty good.

All Through The Night
A Choices: The Royal Romance Dark AU fanfiction.
A/N Other than my few Bloodbound shorts, I’ve never written anything with supernatural overtones before. After receiving requests to see Liam and Riley’s story if he was a vampire, this storyline was born. Since it is set in one of my favorite books from Pixelberry, I had to include as many of the main and supporting characters as I could. The following chapters will explain more where they and what our main characters are. Not going to lie, I am very anxious to step out of my comfort zone for this, but I’m also super excited to see how it goes. Along with The Royal Romance, I will be referencing and altering both The Crown and The Flame and The Royal Masquerade.

Prologue
Once upon a time...
"Father!" Zenobia rushed down the stairwell. "Kenna is at the gates!"
King Luthor's frown deepened as he studied the places his troops had been destroyed. His hope to unite the five kingdoms and wipe off the abomination was for naught.
Kenna would not stop until he and his surviving offspring's heads were on pikes.
...until their blood filled the crystal goblets of the Dark Queen.
"What do we do?" His son, Diavolos, asked.
Luthor knew it was only himself Kenna wanted. After he had killed her mother, hoping to stop the monsters once and for all, Kenna would have her revenge.
If only he had known that she was a vampire...just like her mother.
"Listen carefully." His voice trembled at this possibly being the last time he was able to speak to his son and daughter. "A Nevarkis must always be ready to fight the creatures that prey on the weak and vulnerable."
"But..." Zenobia sniffed. "How? How can we possibly kill the unkillable?"
"She can be killed just like her mother before her." Luthor snapped. "Sunlight. A dagger to the heart. Cutting the head off." His features hardened with resolve. "Know that those are our true allies. Continue your training with daggers. Never stop being vigilant. Educate your children. And remember: where there's one vampire, many more lie in wait in the shadows."
Diavolos stepped forward and gripped his father's shoulder. "We will fight for you."
"No." Luthor corrected. "Fight for our people. The innocent. Fight for a chance to live without fear of monsters."
He cleared his throat. "If I should die--"
"Don't say that!" Zenobia screeched. "We'll be--"
"Kenna is coming for me." Luthor interrupted. "I know I must face the consequences of my actions."
"But--" Divalos lowered his head. "What are we to do?"
"Kill her." Luthor ordered. "Let your emotion be your strength." He took their hands. "And remember that a vampire is nature's evil incarnate. They will do whatever they want and kill anyone who they think is in their way." His voice turned to pleading. "Kill Kenna before she has a chance to kill you."
Zenobia nodded in a jerky manner. Diavolos swallowed with tears in his eyes.
"Good. Now prepare yourselves." Luthor pulled his sword from its sheath. "The devil herself is here."
*****************
Two years later...
Kenna cuddled her infant son, humming a lullaby.
Dom came in, a soft smile gracing his lips at the sight of his family.
"How are we this evening?" He asked, placing a kiss first on her lips then one on his son's forehead.
"A little fussy." Kenna explained. "But otherwise perfect."
"Good." Dom stretched then went to stoke the fire. "I will be going out later tonight."
Kenna's head jerked up. "Why? Are there more rumors?"
He nodded, a determined frown formed on his lips. "The Nevarkis brats refuse to let us live in peace." He moved to stand before the window that looked out toward the kingdom he had once lived in.
High in the mountains, the couple and those like them had found sanctuary. They built a kingdom, one of darkness and shadow that allowed them to live freely. He and Kenna were crowned the rulers, chosen by their people...those that were cursed as monsters.
"Si and I will be standing guard." He explained. "I will not risk you or our child."
"Dom..." Kenna pulled him close, capturing his lips in a long tender kiss. "This must end. I was foolish to let my need for revenge take over." Tears sparkled in her eyes. "Luthor might have left us alone if I had given him a chance."
Dom's face contorted into furious hatred. "A Nevarkis can never be trusted!" He gripped her waist, hands heating as he lost his temper. "He would have plunged a dagger into your heart the first chance he had."
"Dom." She said softly when he singed her clothes.
He wrenched his hands from her with a grimace. "I didn't burn you, did I?"
She shook her head. "I'm fine." She tried to lighten the mood. "Just a little overheated."
He took deep breaths to get himself under control. "Stay here where it is safe." His eyes searched hers. "Have you fed recently?"
"No, but I should be fine until you return." Kenna lifted a bottle with blood for their son. "I can call on one of the servants to help me if I need to."
"Promise me you won't go outside." He pleaded.
"Only if you promise to come back to me." She responded.
His lips quirked in that cocky smile she has always adored.
"Always, my queen." He kissed her once more, then slipped out the door to search out their enemies.
******************
Present Day New York...
"Cordonia...land of both beauty and mystery." Riley wrinkled her nose. "Boring."
"No, it isn't." Hana argued. "I think that is the perfect beginning."
"Look at the comments from our last video." Riley swiveled her laptop so her friend could see. "People love our walkthroughs and all but hate my narration."
"Well..." Hana's brow furrowed. "Maybe we should try to add more to it than just narration." She pulled out some sketches. "We could add some animation of the history before showing our footage of the country."
"That might work." Riley mumbled, tapping her pen against her notebook.
The two set to work planning their next project.
After years of trying, they had finally achieved their dream of traveling for a living. The two college friends had taken every class they could on how to make their hopes into a reality. With Riley's love of history and business and Hana's talent with art and fashion, the pair had created a successful travel channel that showcased rarely visited countries and cities around the world.
Hana took care of all the shopping and dining found at their chosen destinations. Her "day trips" were hailed as must see for anyone planning a vacation. Riley took over for what could be found at night. Myths and legends blended in with what could be discovered once the sun set. A place's nightlife was thoroughly researched and reached a wide variety of their audience, causing many to plan a vacation just on her recommendations alone.
"Did your mom suggest where we should go first?" Riley asked, after skimming the same few articles about the elusive country.
"Not really." Hana hedged.
Riley glanced up. "Is she giving you a hard time again?"
"Yes." Hana slumped in her chair. "She told me to call when I was done playing tour guide."
"Geez." Riley grumbled. "Does she not realize that we have created a legit business?"
"Ladies shouldn't be involved in anything that does not pertain to their husband and family." Hana quoted. "I was supposed to have my debut to Cordonian society last year." Angry tears filled her eyes. "She still hasn't forgiven me for missing out on the Masquerade Ball."
Riley wrapped her in a comforting hug. "I'm sorry."
Hana patted her back. "Don't be. I finally feel like I can accomplish anything."
"That's because you can." Riley sat back with a grin. "Especially with planning out what we should focus on first."
Hana giggled as she went to search out some of her old books she had inherited from her grandparents. "These might help you with your part."
Riley's eyebrows lifted over the titles. "The Crown, the Flame, and The Night Queen."
"That is the earliest recorded story of vampires and monsters in Cordonia." Hana explained. "Queen Kenna Rhys and King Luthor Nevarkis both fought over uniting the kingdoms that make up Cordonia." She shook her head in disbelief. "There is a legend that Queen Kenna was a vampire that married a man who could transform into a dragon."
"For real?" Riley eagerly opened the book. "What happened?"
"Luthor died." Hana reached for another history book. "Some say it was a sword fight while others say she ripped his throat out with her fangs."
"Whoa. Either way, she sounds pretty epic."
"His son got revenge though." Hana flipped to another chapter. "He sneaked in one day and supposedly dragged Kenna into the sunlight. Before her husband could save her, she burned to ash."
"Brutal." Riley shivered. "What did the dragon do?"
Hana shrugged. "Supposedly he left with their child to protect him." She pointed at some drawings rendered from the Dark Ages. "Kenna's son came back to extract revenge. He eliminated one entire side of the Nevarkis family tree."
"And let me guess," Riley picked up another book. "The remaining Nevarkis's struck back?"
"It's supposedly been a feud for centuries between the Nevarkis and the Rhys' families." Hana pulled up an image on her phone. "Though one is currently ruling Cordonia."
Riley studied the image. "Queen Olivia Nevarkis. Looks like the Rhys lost the throne."
Hana shrugged. "There's a myth that they still rule Cordonia from the shadows."
"Mythical royal vampires, huh?" Riley laughed at the thought. "I hope I bump into one just so I can figure out who's really in charge."
Hana giggled at the thought. "You would be the only person to ask a logical, government question instead of the usual, whoa you're a real live vampire!"
Riley threw a pillow at her. "Hey! I can be calm and collected when faced with the unknown."
Hana threw the pillow back. "Tell that to the supposed haunted house we visited on our last trip." She broke out into laughter with Riley's defense that squeaking doors were the true villains. "On that note, I'm going to start packing. Our flight leaves first thing in the morning."
"I'll be ready." Riley promised.
Once alone, she flipped to a more current timeline of the supposed Dark Kingdom.
King Constantine Rhys the Third rules over what is his rightful kingdom. Rumors swirl that he is simply biding his time until he can eliminate the usurper, Queen Olivia Nevarkis, First of Her Name. The people know that one day, a Rhys will sit upon the throne, uniting the Dark Kingdom and Cordonia once and for all.
****************
Cordonia's Royal Palace, 2 a.m.
"Heeeerah! Olivia threw her daggers as hard as she could while doing a roundhouse kick.
The blades struck into the chest, head, and groin of the makeshift dummy.
She brushed the few strands of red hair that had escaped her hair clip out of her eyes. With a great deal of scrutiny, she studied her dagger placement.
"The one to the head needs to go deeper."
She spun around with a start at that all too familiar voice.
"You're late." She folded her arms and tapped her foot.
Liam rubbed the back of his neck. "Sorry. Had to stop off for a quick bite."
Olivia rolled her eyes. "That's not funny."
"Not that kind of bite." He teased, holding up a styrofoam box.
"Oh." She blinked in surprise. "I forget that you enjoy normal food too."
He chuckled at that. "There are certain foods that I don't think any man could ever give up."
Olivia decided to ignore that as she wiped the sweat from her face and neck. "Now that you're here, let's get the formalities over with."
"Very well." Liam gestured toward her. "You may go first."
She sat down on a bench lining one side of the palace gym. She motioned for him to join her.
"Not you!" She hissed when she saw his all too familiar guard.
Drake Walker bristled at her tone. His brown eyes clashed with her green.
"Give us a moment, please." Liam asked him.
"Don't let your guard down." Drake warned. "Remember, she's a Nevarkis."
Olivia tensed. "Perhaps you should remember what happened the last time you said something like that."
She quirked one eyebrow at the man and felt a sense of glee when he winced in memory.
His hand automatically drifted to his side where one of her daggers had once struck true.
With a quick bow to Liam, Drake stepped back out into the hallway.
Liam shook his head. "Are you two ever going to get along?"
"Stop talking stupid." Olivia snapped. "Now then, as you know...I must have my revenge."
"I know." Liam folded his arms and leaned casually against a column.
She eyed him for any sign of hatred.
It drove her crazy how unvampiric he could be.
He seemed almost human.
He seemed...kind.
A vampire is nature's evil incarnate. You can never trust a Rhys.
Those words had been drummed into her skull by her parents and then her aunt after their deaths by Constantine's hand.
And yet...Liam had done the unthinkable.
He had actually been a friend to Olivia.
*************
The night after her parents' funeral, five year old Olivia had been sitting alone before the fireplace, weeping over them.
Her aunt had left her to deal with her own grief and to plan the next attack upon Constantine.
As she searched for a tissue, Olivia jumped back with a shriek at the little blonde haired boy that held the Kleenex box.
His eyes were filled with unshed tears as he handed her a tissue.
"Who are you?" She asked, remembering that a Nevarkis must always be brave.
"I'm Liam." He explained. "I wanted to...I wanted to tell you I'm sorry about your parents." He sniffed and took a tissue for himself. "My mom died too."
Olivia blinked and took a cautious step forward. "Are you...are you a vampire?!"
He nodded.
She whipped out the dagger her mother had given her and rushed at him.
Liam moved faster than she could comprehend, gently keeping her hand above her head.
"Let go of me, monster!" She ordered. "You're why I'm all alone!"
"I didn't do anything." He told her, anguish taking over his handsome features. "I don't want to hurt you or anyone."
"Liar!" She snapped. "That's what you do. Lie and kill." Her tears ran faster down her cheeks. "And now you'll kill me."
"I won't." He promised. "I swear I won't hurt you." He ignored his own tears trickling down his cheeks. His blue eyes burned with resolve. "My mother made me promise never to hurt a human."
Olivia shook her head. It had to be lies. Isn't that what vampires and monsters do? Lull you into letting your guard down so that they could have an easy kill.
"Your father will pay for what he did." She said, hoping to see his true, evil nature. "He must die!"
"I know." Liam slowly released her and took a step back.
Olivia watched in surprise as he sat down before her fireplace and pulled out a silk blue ribbon from his pocket.
He motioned for her to join him.
She slowly lowered herself down, dagger poised in her little fist in case he made a move.
"May I have your hand, please?" He asked.
He patiently waited on her to decide whether or not to give it to him.
She tentatively placed her hand in his.
His lips turned up into a relieved smile as he wrapped the ribbon over their joined hands.
"What are you doing?" She asked, lowering her dagger.
"Making a bond." He explained. "I, Liam Rhys, Crown Prince of the Dark Kingdom, promise to never seek out revenge and to end all vendettas against the Nevarkis family." His blue eyes held her green. "Just as my mother, Queen Eleanor wanted me to."
Oliva's lips parted. "You mean it?"
"I do." Liam's voice held a great deal of sincerity. "I would rather walk into the sun than not do as she asked."
"Oh." Olivia sniffed. She could understand that kind of devotion.
"Do you," Liam's cheeks colored. "Do you think we can be allies?"
"A Nevarkis will never be friends with a monster." She repeated the rhetoric that she knew by heart.
"But," Liam's shoulders slumped. "We're not all bad."
"All monsters are bad at heart."
"I'm not." He pouted. "I don't want to be."
"You're so weird." She muttered.
"Am not." Liam grumbled. "I hope I'm not."
Olivia looked down at their hands still bound together. "I guess since you promised something, I should too."
He didn't bother to hide his surprise.
She stuck her tongue out at him. "I, Olivia Nevarkis, The Crown Princess of Cordonia, swear that after I kill Constantine Rhys, I will lay down my weapons." Her brow furrowed. "I'll pick them back up though if you or any other monster tries anything."
Liam's smile grew. Before she could react, he tugged her into a quick hug.
"Now we can be friends!" He cheered.
"Friends?" She shook her head. "I'm a Nevarkis and you're a Rhys. We can't be friends."
"We will be." He vowed, jumping to his feet. "I have to go before Father finds out I've sneaked out. I'll try to come back in a few nights."
Olivia didn't have a chance to tell him whether or not she wanted him to. In the blink of an eye, he had jumped from her balcony and was already out the palace gates.
*****************
That had been the beginning of Liam's visits. Through the years, he had remained true to his promise. He did all he could to befriend her and never tried to sway her from seeking vengeance.
Olivia had once asked him how he could take her threat against his father so easily.
He had merely shrugged, explaining that he knew it was the way of things. His father had killed both her parents, while he had only lost one. He hoped she didn't since he did not wish to see his father or her dead.
Olivia had then told him again how weird he was, bringing another smile to his lips.
And now here he was again, calmly taking her promised vengeance well.
"So what business brings you here tonight?" She asked.
"Father thinks it is time I chose a wife." Liam responded. "I thought you should know that I will be spending more time in your kingdom to find one."
Olivia shot up off the bench. "What? But you promised to never hurt a human!"
"And I will keep true to that." He explained.
"But..." Olivia's brow furrowed. "You'll turn her into a vampire."
"Only if she wishes it." Liam explained. "I won't force her to make such a decision."
"I see." She began to pace while thinking. "You'll have vampire children."
"Only if she's a vampire." He reminded her. "Remember my brother."
Olivia paused. She had forgotten about Leo Rhys, The Great Disappointment of the Dark Kingdom. His mother had begged Constantine not to turn her. It had never been asked before, and in his mercy he had agreed. That was when they all discovered that a monster and a human could only produce a human child. In order for the heir to the Dark Kingdom to be a vampire, both parents had to be the same being.
"And you'll be fine having human children?" She asked. "If you're chosen bride refuses the Vampire's Kiss?"
"Of course." He responded.
"Lord, you're so weird." She muttered.
His smirk flashed. "Let's hope the woman I choose doesn't think so."
"Are there no women in your kingdom you can choose from?" She asked.
"I've looked." He shook his head. "It's hard to explain, but if one doesn't have an arranged marriage, then we must search until we see the one meant for us."
"And you somehow got weirder." She brushed her hands down her pants and held one out to him. "Good luck, I suppose."
"Thank you." He grasped her hand and lifted it to his lips. "I'll keep you updated on my progress."
"There's no need."
"Of course there is." He winked at her on his way out. "We're friends."
Her lips parted to once again remind him that they couldn't be. For some reason, she decided not to say it.
Liam had somehow wormed his way into her life and had become the closest friend she had ever had.

The Lee Residence, Shanghai, China...
Lorelei paled as she reread the report.
It can’t be. Not Now!
Of all the times for this to happen, it would be when her stubborn, foolish daughter decided to visit.
Given the nature of her relationship with Hana, she knew that there was no way she could convince her to postpone her trip to Cordonia.
There was only one course of action left to take. She would have to call the one man who was capable of protecting her daughter. She would promise hiim anything as long as he kept Hana out of Liam’s clutches. As much as wanted her to give up this ridiculous hobby she called a job and settled down with the right sort of man, she would never put her in the path of becoming the next vampire queen.
Setting down the packet of information from one of her informants, she checked to make certain no servant was out in the hallway and then searched for the needed phone number.
Taking a deep breath, she placed the call.
Her trepidation grew when he didn’t immediately answer.
"Hello."
"Lord Beaumont?"
"Yes." She could hear a door closing in the background. "Who is this?"
"Lorelei Lee." She replied.
"Lady Lorelei." He responded with a recognition. "How can I help you?"
"My daughter and her friend have got it in their heads to come visit Cordonia." She began. "I'm not certain how long they intend to stay, but I was hoping that I could retain your services."
"For what exactly?" Lord Beaumont asked.
"Protection." She replied. "I have heard through certain channels that the dark prince is beginning to search for a bride." She took a deep breath. "We do NOT want our daughter anywhere near that vile creature."
"I understand." He replied. "I usually don't do personal security. With my brother, Bertrand, retired," he hesitated, "it is left up to me to help protect Cordonia's borders."
"My husband and I would be in your debt if you could watch over her in the evenings." Lorelei cajoled. "I've heard that your brother is planning on extending his vineyards. We would be more than happy to invest in the production and distribution of his sparkling wine. Perhaps even let it be the only sparkling wine we serve in our hotels."
"Send me her information and picture. Call her and tell her that since our family is an old friend of yours, that I've volunteered to show them around. Find out where she's staying and when she plans on arriving."
"Oh thank you, my lord. We--"
"I'll also need a contract prepared and signed for all that you offered." He added.
"Yes of course. I'll get everything to you at once." She promised.
Once he ended the call, she sank back down onto her chair.
She bowed her head and began to pray that her daughter came to no harm these next few weeks. To lose Hana to one of the many creatures that roamed the night in Cordonia was too horrible to even contemplate.
If anyone could keep her daughter safe then it was none other than Lord Maxwell Beaumont.

GREAT DESCENDANT — Pt. 1 Leather Journal
↪Attack on Titan series
↪content; warrior!reader, aged-up character, graphic description of violence, slow burn, season 4 spoiler
Tiny footsteps belonging to you echoed throughout the empty hallway. Your forehead scrunched as a bead of sweat trailed down your skin, but you dismissed the discomfort as you needed to find your father, wanting some explanation.
It was around four in the afternoon, and you were certain that your father must be occupying himself inside his study, probably enjoying his coffee as he read some reports regarding the military advance. You always wondered why he got all of that information even though he was not even in the military, but perhaps the book in your hand was the answer to your question, and you had to find out more.
You were used to running around this part of the mansion — since you would spend some of your time here with your father when he didn't invite the military higher-ups or some of his business partners for a meeting together. Truthfully, you could have waited for later after dinner to confront him, but your mind was already fueled with curiosity that wouldn't die without being given the right extinguisher.
So you scurry out within an instant, far from the east wing where the library was located to the west where your father would entertain his friends and colleagues. In your small journey, you took off your mules and ran barefoot, ignoring the gasp from the maid that you passed in the hallway.
Panting, you felt the exhaustion course through your body as you finally reached your destination. Some eyes regarded you with worry beneath their intimidating gaze, but they knew that you had been running out of breath before, certain that it was nothing serious.
Two guards were standing tall on each side of the door, guarding your father's study against the outside, and you were certain there were another two on the other side of the door. They didn't give you any attention or warning, so you knew that he was not in some kind of meeting or too engrossed with work.
Sucking a deep breath, you hide the book that you found behind your back before raising your hand to the wooden door, knocking it with your knuckles several times, soft yet enough that it would echo inside the room. You heard the rustling of papers, probably from some of the military letters that he read.
"Name and busi—"
"It's me, pa!"
Your voice cut him off in a gleeful manner, holding yourself from bursting hundreds of questions. If you wanted to know the truth, you needed to play your cards right. Well, what could a six years old girl do? Anything of course, especially if you were the only child (for now) and your parents loved you like you were their stars in the night sky.
You tried to hide your smirk when you heard the audible 'click' coming from the inside, followed by the door opening simultaneously. The sun penetrated through the windows, lighting up the whole room and the hallway behind you. A pleasant smell of cedarwood filled your nostrils in an instant, the unique scent that you knew embedded on your father's suit too since he spent the majority of his time here.
There was a massive round table in the middle of the room, one where you like to sit when your father was busy with work but wanted your company. You would sit there without a care and boredom since your nose mostly touched the paper book in your hand, too engrossed with whatever literature that you could find within his study.
You didn't need to go back and forth from the east wing and grabbed some books there. Your father studies already engaging enough with a wide variety of history, self-improvement, and many other philosophy books. The room would be engulfed with silence if that happened, but the atmosphere was serene and comforting to both of you, making times fly past naturally and just felt right.
"Well, isn't it my precious daughter?" He stood up from his plush leather chair, dark yet warm eyes never left your figure as you skipped toward where he was. His lips shaped into a gentle smile as he watched how giddy you looked right now, with both hands on your back as if you had a surprise for him.
It was indeed a surprise, but whether he liked it or not was another story.
"Pa, I need to speak with you!" Your bubbly personality was always so endearing. You were witty, smart, wise — his little rascal but still had a personality like a noble lady when needed.
"And what do you want to talk to me about, my little star?" He walked closer before kneeling in front of you, levelling his eyes with yours. "Something serious? Something playful? Or maybe you just want to talk to me since you missed your pa so much?" His smile turned into a little smirk, raising one of his eyebrows in a teasing manner.
You jutted your lips at his question as your hands clench tighter on the brown books that you found before. Your father waited for any kind of explanation, but you didn't open up your mouth, not even a little. But you suddenly averted your gaze away, pupils shifting back and forth.
He blinked, trying to understand what it was that you wanted. Your father then looked past you, finding the guards inside the room. It left a question inside his mind at the moment, because you never once needed to talk alone as you always threw questions at him without caring if anybody heard.
This would be the first time, and he decided to indulge you with it.
"Guards, you can wait outside."
"Sir, with all due respect—"
"Please."
The two guards looked at each other before giving your father a salute, answered with a firm nod from him. You stood still with your eyes closed as you waited until the sound of footsteps started to fade, not realizing the scrutinizing look that he threw at you. The second you heard a gentle thud echoed in the room, you let out a breath that you subconsciously held.
You were alone now, with your father waiting for any syllables to come out from your lips. A few seconds ago you were so eager, ready to burst out all of the questions that popped inside your mind. But now, as he gazed at you with a look that you couldn't fathom, you started to rethink your decision.
Would he mad at you for reading the book that he strictly said was forbidden to read? He always kept it inside a glass compartment, telling you that it was filled with a history of mankind. The truth that someday he would tell you. So would he be angry if you knew it now instead of later?
"You read the journal, my star?" You subconsciously dropped the book as you never thought he could see through you like that. Your hands were shaking behind your back before you tightly grip your bow's dress, fearing that he would not let you walk inside the library ever again.
Seeing the distress in your eyes, he immediately rested his hand on your shoulder, squeezing it gently as if to make sure that you didn't have to be afraid. That whatever you did, you always became his little star, the daughter that he loved so much. "It's alright, sooner or later I will tell you all of it."
His voice was calm as he picked up the book from behind you, opening it right in front of your face as he checked that in case some pages were wrinkled. You still kept your mouth shut, waiting for him to say something more — because for sure his words before were still not enough to calm yourself.
When he looked at you again, you were averting his gaze and decided to look down. So he closed the book and reached out for you, holding your much smaller hand as he brought you toward his desk. The silence was deafening as he didn't say anything afterwards, making you have to focus on the footsteps to dwindle your concern.
His hand was warm as it engulfed yours, squeezing it softly here and there as he plopped himself to his chair. With how light you were, he picked you up and tucked you gently on his lap, wanting to make sure that you were comfortable since it would take some time to explain everything to you.
"Now, can you tell me what you already know so far?"
It was now that you finally dared to look up, curious about the expression on his face. You should have known that your father wouldn't be angry at you, he couldn't, at least not towards you. His face didn't even show any sign of resentment, he just sat there, looking down, and waited until you were ready to talk.
"Almost everything, I guess." You finally dared to speak up, yet it still sounded so timid. "That King Fritz was not our enemy, it was thanks to him that the war is over." Continuing your words, you swallowed a huge lump. "And those people on the island, they are not demons, but they are exactly like—"
"Us."
He finished your word without pause, knowing what you were going to say next like he always did. Your forehead scrunched at this, lips turned into a scowl as you tried to understand the world that you live in right now. All the war, the hatred that Eldians received inside the internment zone, if only this true story was out in the public then they wouldn't get treated like that, right?
"B-But why do we hide this information, then?" You croaked out, not believing that your family concealed such truth. "If people knew that King Fritz was the one who wanted peace, if only the whole world knew that Eldians did not want anything but to live like a normal human, they were not going to be treated like this, pa!"
You were begging right now, needing some answer that could justify the choice they made. It felt awful, like someone had put a blindfold on you all your life, whispering to you that the world filled with hatred and that because of your ancestors, because of the blood that flows inside your veins and there was nothing else that you could do except living through the brutal knowledge.
But it was all a lie, because your family could have made a change in this world yet didn't do anything about it.
Your father just sat there, listening to your cries and complaints. He knew from the start that you were someone that would do anything for Eldians to be free, he often saw you sneaking around and talked to the maids, after all, questioning about how their children were at home and many other mundane things.
He didn't have the courage to tell you, the reason why he kept the information to himself when he was warned by the current inheritor. He didn't have the courage to tell you what lies across the sea, what slept inside the walls that the king had made. As your father, he didn't want his six years old innocent daughter to know that the fate of the world was in their hands — the Eldian.
His lips turned into a frown as he realized. No matter how much he wanted to protect you from this cruel world, no matter how much he just wanted you to live and be happy without a burden on your shoulder, he couldn't grant his wish.
Because soon, you would be the one in the family who held the biggest responsibility.
"You would know soon enough, my little star." He gulped down, dark orbs gazing at your face as he was so tormented from this fact only. Your beady eyes shone under the orange hue that slipped through the large windows, making you look even more innocent, an angel to him and his wife as he cradled you like this on his lap.
Soon, and he needed to start telling you now how much weight you would carry throughout your life. "Once you inherit the war hammer titan."
"Wake up!"
You sat up straight as you tried to inhale the air bit by bit, feeling like your dreams that you had just stolen the oxygen out of your lungs. No, it was not a dream, it was a memory that you had with your father. The day when you knew the truth, the day when you knew your responsibility and how you needed to keep a blind eye over it.
And for sure, hiding the fact from everyone was the hardest part. Especially when you had these people you called friends as you invaded the island of Paradis with the mission to take back the founding titan. You wanted to tell them the danger, or how the people inside the wall were not as different from those in Liberio.
But you had made a vow to your father to keep your lips sealed, no matter how much you wanted to share it. And you were not going to break that promise, not when you knew there was a high possibility that you wouldn't make it back alive.
"I am sorry, I should have been more gentle." Your gaze still cast down your lap, wanting to control your emotion first before interacting with the other warrior. "Nightmare?" But his gentle, mature voice was so endearing you couldn't help but lookup.
His forehead scrunched in worry as you realized that he squatted down right in front of you. Large hazel eyes scrutinizing your every movement, and you felt so bare with how he seemed like he could see right through you.
"I am fine, Marcel." You answered him a matter of factly, not wanting to prolong the constant worry that he had for his fellow warriors. "Sorry, I will clean up the firepit and be ready in a minute."
"Oh, no need. I mean— you don't need to." He stood up, reaching out his hand for you, and you took it despite the confusion that was written all over your face. "I already cleaned it up, so you just have to grab your bag and we will be ready to continue our journey."
"Marcel!" You exclaimed, stomping your feet to the ground subconsciously as your eyes drilled on his skull. "It was supposed to be my turn!" And your outburst of course caught the others' attention. "You always do something like this, making sure that everyone could leisure around while you did all the work."
"(Y/n), I am sure that he—" The glare in your eyes now fell to another victim, the colossal titan inheritor, and you could see him flinch from just being the recipient of your glare. "N-Nevermind, I will just, uhm, check on Reiner if he is okay."
And just like that, he scurried off to find his friend, not wanting to interrupt your little tantrum that he was sure would subside soon.
Bertolt knew you, you were always a little cranky when you woke up, at least that was what he could see by the past three days as he woke up with you not far from him. You needed at least a minute just opening your eyes without doing anything, and after that, you were good to go. So he understood why you seemed so extra for what Marcel did right now.
You continued to scold the older boy who just stood there scratching his nape bashfully and apologizing for what he did. He didn't do anything wrong, but you just disliked the idea that someone did something that was supposed to be your job. Though you always said thank you before taking your leave.
Feeling that you had enough with boys, you walked to Annie who was currently nibbling at some sweets that you gave her before at the boat that brought the companion here. She seemed to see your little quarrel but decided to keep silent, waiting for Marcel to lead the way when he was done fanning his reddened cheek.
Three days had passed after Marley dropped you off to this cursed land. Everyone had so much expectation for this generation, and the fact that a Tybur took part in the mission brought so much hope to the Eldians in your homeland.
Your father was right about the burden that you were going to have. All the expectations set the bar so high for you. So for that, he prepared you to be a reliable and strong individual. Ever since the revelation, he pointed a lot of private instructors to teach you all the basic things about self-defence, archery, firearms, and swordsmanship skills.
You were shaped to be the Eldian's saviour in Marley, ever since you were six. And you would make sure that all your knowledge and experiences would be put to good use.
Marcel told you about the plan, and for now, they all would rely on Bertolt and Reiner's titan since it was the most destructive and save the rest for later days. When he first told you about the plan, the two of you were alone, he liked to discuss strategy first with you because your mind was the most mature of all of them.
And all the time he told you about it, your mind always thought that it was so wrong for him to ask for your advice. You wanted to tell him not to destroy the whole outer wall, just one district was enough and everyone could sneak in already. But you knew the chances to get in were lower if there was not enough damage.
So reluctantly, you agreed. You told him that he was brilliant, telling him that it would work for the warriors. And after that, everyone would enrol in the military cadet corps, some would graduate to be a survey corps, while the others joined the military police regiment. It would need a few years to get by, but it would be the safest and optimal route.
Just a few years here and you could come back home, reading books and annoying your father even more. Though you were sure that your mother would scold you for spending too much time with him, she would want you to go horseback riding with her while telling some stories about the family.
Yes, everything would be just like before, and you couldn't wait for it.
Your eyes fleeting toward the brunette who walked in front of you, his hair swept to the back, reminding you of his brother that was the complete opposite of him in terms of personality. Marcel was gentle, compassionate, reliable, all the things that you would expect from an elder sibling. Meanwhile, Porco was aggressive, emotional, and somewhat a little rude when he talked.
And the big difference between Porco and Marcel that you knew, was the fact that the younger brother despised you. The blonde often threw shades and mockery, telling you that you were not like them, how you were a spoiled kid, and could never understand what Eldian really feels with all the privilege that you had due to your last name.
But that didn't stop you from wanting to befriend him. You could see through his harsh facade, he was actually gentle inside and cared deeply for all the warrior candidates. He even let his guard down that day when they knew Reiner would be the armoured titan inheritor instead of him, letting you sit beside him outside the headquarters as he let out a sob.
He wept silently when you put your hand on his back, comforting him through the single touch. That was the only push he needed before breaking down in front of you, cursing himself for not being a better candidate, that it was his fault for being too confident in his skill and not trying harder to get the military's attention.
Oh, if only he knew. If only he knew the real reason why he was not here.
It felt like it happened such a long time ago despite knowing a month just passed ever since. You wondered what the other warrior did right now, more accurately, what was he doing right now. Maybe he had lunch with his family, or perhaps beating himself to the pulp and kept on training until he couldn't stand anymore.
Knowing that was enough to make you frown since you really cared for him, and to think that he blamed himself for his failure broke your heart even more. Every time you walked, there was an extra weight on your chest as an ivory shark tooth pendant grazing your skin, reminding you of your days in Marley once again.
Especially the day when you received the necklace, something you never took off ever since.
And now as you walked right behind Marcel, you could only imagine that the brown strands were blonde instead. But you shook your head after that, knowing for certain he would have a longer lifespan, that he wouldn't have to carry so much burden like the rest of you. He could enjoy his life, and that was what caused Marcel to put Reiner on the pedestals instead of him.
You didn't remember since when you were getting left behind. Of course you could still see the fellow warriors in front of you, but they were a few meters ahead from where you were. It happened a lot, so you didn't really complain since they knew sometimes you would need alone time.
It was not like there were titans around anyway, the Marleyan Military had assured you that the titans would only be there near the outer wall. So everyone should be saved since it was still halfway through the journey, no one needed to worry and be too on guard for now.
At least that was what you believed until you saw a large shadow looming from behind you.
The silence was deafening when you felt the air sucked out from the space around you, leaving you to stand there alone as you slowly lost the ability to breathe. Fear, that was what you felt right now as your mind could only conclude one thing — there was a titan, right behind you.
No, you still needed to finish your mission. You had promised your father that you would come back to him, you had promised your mother that you would come back home intact, even if it needed you a few years to grant that, as long as you could see them again, it was alright.
As long as you could come back and see him happy and living a beautiful life even when your term was going to end, it would be fine.
But you were glued to the ground, your muscles tensed and you couldn't move your limbs to run, or just to evade that gigantic hand which now ready to crush your small body with its hand. Yet despite all that, you felt a strong push coming from your side, pushing you out of the way and snapped you back to reality.
You saw Marcel, his dark brown hair dishevelled as now his torso engulfed in the hand of a titan. He looked distressed, panicked, and he flailed his body around as he tried with all his might to survive, despite an impeccable fate that he already knew deep inside his heart.
No one knew where it came from, one second they were chatting, and the next as Marcel saw a titan running toward you, his feet moved on their own with one goal to reach for you. You couldn't see it, you just gave him an empty look as you were just deep in thought a moment before.
He knew that you would be too shocked to understand what happened, he knew that you couldn't move away when you turned to see what was standing behind you. And there was something inside his soul that boosted him to run faster, pushing you away as he decided to replace you.
"Come on, let's go!"
He heard Reiner shouting at you who was still sitting on the grass, eyes focused on him as you tried to wrap your head around you. There were tears in your orbs when Bertolt and Reiner pulled you away forcefully, your legs even wobbled, and that was when the ravenette decided to hoist you up over his shoulder.
Marcel heard the shout, the pleading in your voice as you called out his name. The others were running to safety, but he could still see you as your hand stretched out for him, not believing that you would lose him like this.
"(Y/n)!" He screamed with all his might, hoping that you could hear what he said. Wide teeth already surrounded his head, and it was a matter of time before his world turned black. So he needed to say it, he needed you to tell his brother that his job was done for now. "Tell Porco I did it!"
Then he was gone as the jaw of the titans closed with his body in between it. He died in the hand of a titan who no one knew where it came from. You should have been cautious, no matter what, this island was filled with titans and you shouldn't have trusted whatever the Marleyan Military said. And it should have been you, not him.
Your eyes never left the scene as you saw Marcel being devoured alive, starting from his head, slowly down to his hip. The details were so vivid and you were sure it would be engraved in your mind for as long as you lived. This would be your constant nightmare, reminding you every day what a cruel world you lived in.
And you didn't know if you were ever ready — if someday you met a circumstance when you had to face Porco, knowing that his brother died saving you.

Humans are weird: Rationalize Anything

What had started as a series of border disputes seventeen years earlier had rapidly escalated into what was now know as the Golden Rim War between the Coalition of Free Systems and the Jem Dynasty.
The coalition comprised of some twenty three different species with individual territories spanning a single system to galaxy spanning domains depending on the individual members. Framed as united for various trade agreements, the coalition's intent was actually a mutual defense pact to stave off aggressors eager to consume smaller territories into their own. One such aggressor was the Jem Dynasty.
The Jem Dynasty was largely similar to ancient Chinese ruling systems with power largely resting with a single emperor like figure along with their court and family. This dynasty spanned some fifty systems with the core systems being heavily populated in planet wide mega cities. Seventeen long years of conflict had whittled down both sides and despite the Jem having an overwhelming numbers advantage with ships and soldiers they had been fought to a standstill. Untold millions had died and with both populations now clamoring for peace each faction agreeing to come to the table. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
High above the planet Zeffer V the fleets of the Coalition of Free Systems and the Jem Dynasty met.
Coalition ships were a menagerie of different shapes and sizes, each pulled from a different member species with their own unique design. The Jem ships by contrast were a uniformed collection of vessels, each size determining their function in the fleet. Jem built their ships more like floating temples, the sides engraved and laid with gold etchings depicting their emperor.
Both fleets remained several hundred kilometers from each other above the planet; each eyeing the other just waiting for the fighting to resume.
Aboard the human capital ship "Reaper's bounty" several delegates of the coalition waited anxiously on the bridge, their eyes glued to the viewing monitors showing the Jem fleet.
"Have the negotiators contacted us?" the Hobulan delegate asked. Captain Pérez looked at his communication officer whose shaking head was all the answer he needed. Several negotiators and delegates from the coalition had gone over to the Jem flagship to begin the peace talks but ever since their ship entered the enemies hangar there had been no word from them.
The Hobulan was about to ask another question when the monitors lit up. "Receiving incoming transmission." the coms officer reported.
"On screen."
Pérez leaned back in his command chair and watched as the monitors went from blinking red switch over to a strange sight.
The picture came into focus to reveal a large stone room lit by several dozen blue fire torches with a large black stone pyramid at the center of the room. At the base of the pyramid Pérez saw the coalition delegates on their knees with their hands bound behind their backs, surrounded by a dozen Jem guards. The negotiators looked as if they had been beaten badly and one appeared to be missing several eyes and teeth as a small trail of blood dripped from their mouth.
The delegates on the bridge gasped at the sight of such brutality when a deep voice cut in.
"If you wish to deal with me, you must show the proper respect."
Looking up Pérez tracked the voice on the screen and saw that atop the pyramid was a marble like throne of emerald green with a lone figure sitting upon it.
"This is Captain Pérez of the Reaper's Bounty; identify yourself."
The figure's expression twisted in disgust and lifted one of their fingers. A guard at the base of the pyramid approached a captive and drove what appeared to be a metallic stake through one of their legs.
"STOP!" one of the delegates aboard the bridge shouted as the captive screamed at the top of their lungs in pain. The guard twisted the metal stake further before removing it causing a pool of blue blood to burst from the wound.
"You speak to Emperor Zhau Feng Jem," said the figure from atop his pyramid, "and as such you will only speak when spoken to."
The delegation went silent as they watched on in horror while Captain Pérez motioned for one of his officers to come over.
"The terms offered by your negotiators are an insult to me." Zhau began. "You dare assume you can make me admit this war was my doing?"
"You were the one who invaded Julv Sigma!" the Proten delegate blurted out. Zhau lifted another finger and the same guard drove the metal stake through the previous captives head, killing them instantly.
"Your insolence continues to cost lives; so I suggest you choose your next words more carefully should you-"
The monitors went dead mid sentence leaving the delegates confused.
"What just happened?" "Did they terminate the signal?"
"Don't just stand there, we need to get it back and get our people back safely!"
One after another the delegates voiced their concerns to the human crew and the coms officer merely looked to his captain for support.
Pérez flicked several switches on his command chair and the monitors switched once more to the view of the Jem fleet. What the delegates saw left them speechless.
The Jem flagship was burning and slowly being sucked into Zeffer V's orbit.
Dozens of human ships in the coalition fleet were firing on it with every weapon they had in a frenzied barrage of death and destruction. Laser batteries tore through their shields like paper, rail guns left craters the size of football fields in the hull, and a variety of missile volleys picked off the enemy flagships engines one by one ensuring it would not be able to stabilize orbit again.
Several of the Jem ships were moving in to cover the flagship as human shields yet the rate of fire was so intense that these vessels were ripped asunder as well.
Without knowing the full context of the situation the rest of the coalition forces began opening fire as well on the Jem fleet who were now caught wrong footed as they continued to shield their emperors vessel. Their electro whips lashed out and a dozen of the smaller coalition ships were snapped in two but it was too little too late to alter the course of the engagement.
"Who gave the order to fire on the Jem?!" the Hobulan delegate demanded.
"I did." The delegates turned to see captain Pérez holding his hand up casually. Incensed by the casual demeanor the Hobulan became enraged.
"Do you have any idea what you have just done!?" they roared as the captain continued issuing a series of crisp orders to his bridge crew directing fire at enemy ships. "Not only have you shattered these peace talks but you have just no doubt killed our own people who were being held captive!"
The captain nodded as if accepting the criticism. "The options were weighed and the outcome was deemed worth the price."
"Have you taken leave of your senses?!" the Proten delegate spoke this time. "Some of your own people were there!"
"And?"
Pérez's remark took the Proten aback for a moment as the captain fixed him with a cold gaze
"And what?" Pérez continued.
"You just killed our own people!" "Their sacrifice was worth the cost to kill Zhau." Pérez continued as he handed off another series of orders for the fleet.
"Your actions have forever stained your hands with the blood of innocents captain." The Hobulan did not mince words as they laid into the captain for his seeming madness. It was at this the captain stopped issuing orders and rounded on the Hobulan, nearly knocking over his command throne as he stood up and walked over to the delegates.
"WAKE UP!" he shouted as he grabbed the Hobulan by the scruff of their collar and lifted them a few inches into the air. "There are no innocents here! Not in this war, not in this fleet, not even in this room!"
"All of us have our hands dipped in the blood of those we could have saved but lacked the will to do what needed to be done!"
Pérez let go of the delegate and they bounced back to the floor. They straightened themselves and returned the captains gaze unwavering.
"You've ensured there will be no peace to this war; how many more millions have you just put to the torch?"
Pérez scoffed in disgust. "By killing their emperor the remaining family and court will be at each others throats to become the new emperor." He said as he turned around and went back to his command chair. "Those millions more dead will be Jem corpses as they break down into endless civil war."
"But our negotiators-" one of them began.
"Were a necessary sacrifice to draw out the emperor and kill him." Finished Pérez. "If a single life would bring about the death of our enemies then by god I will be the one to pull the trigger myself."
The delegates took a step back at the horror of the human captains predictions. It seemed they had never truly understood the mindset of humanity when they were invited to join the coalition. They had never thought possible the lengths they would go to to achieve their victories even at the expense of their own people; nor had they imagined that such actions could be so easily made rational for a human that when given the opportunity they would act on them without a moment's hesitation.
Though the Jem fleets were now burning all around them, the delegates could not help but wonder if their next greatest enemy was not already among them.

Meta-Analysis of the Rift Mage Specialization
I said in February I was going to do it, and it only took me seven months to follow through!
Anyway. Analyzing game-play elements for narratives purposes has become somewhat of a hobby of mine ever since I really got into GameLit. Then, I started "fangs" and felt that my fight scenes were boring, so I build ability trees reminiscent of DA:I's for my OCs. You know, as you do. During that process, though, the lack of banter acknowledging several choices struck me as odd. Especially regarding specializations. Especially when it comes to Solas'.
We’ll be taking a look at (in order)
1. Description
2. Codex Entry
3. Skills
a. in comparison to DA: II’s Primal & Force Mage
4. Specialization Dialogue with Solas
5. Conclusion
Disclaimer: I talk a lot (this post might have about 2.5k). And, I promise you, you'll be tired of seeing 'the Fade this' and 'the Veil that' at the end of it.
Description
“These mages draw upon the force of the Fade, either pulling matter from the Fade to attack or twisting the Veil itself into a weapon to stagger or crush their enemies.”
[source – DA wiki; bolding mine]
So, lore-wise, mages do ‘draw upon the Fade’. Sure. But do they ‘pull matter from the Fade’? Absolutely not.
Physical things and the Fade rarely mix well. Plus – this is mainly my theory – the way magic is utilized (the 'drawing upon the Fade part') requires it to pass through the Veil. Magic being a form of energy, and thus not physical, does not constitute to ‘pulling matter from the Fade’.
That's the first thing other mages (read: Dorian, Vivienne, possible the Inquisitor) should (or could) have referenced in banter/dialogue.
The rest of the sentence ('twisting the Veil into a weapon') is also highly interesting, since there is little known about the Veil. Nobody knows how it works. And, thus, nobody should be capable enough to manipulate it consistently enough to use it as a weapon. But considering it's Solas who gets this specialization - well. He knows the Veil well enough, don't you think? (Which is why I think Rift Mage should have been Solas' personal, individual specialization like Fenris' Lyrium Ghost, but I just really like personalized skill trees in general.)
However, having answered that question, connecting magic so closely to the very thing can be described as a “magical vibration that repels the Fade”, I'm curious about how it would work. Since, you know, mages are inevitably tied to the Fade. Wouldn't the Veil repel a try to manipulate it by a mage? Is using mana the same thing as drawing energy from the Fade? If so, it would be straight-up impossible to actually use such a method for any ordinary mage (read: not Solas). If mana can be used without the Fade, it would be possible, but is such a thing feasible? Can you switch between spells and Veil quickly enough without horrific consequences such as possibly tearing yourself apart?
Very interesting topic. Would love to go into it more, but at that point, I'd become subjective, so let's end it here.
To summarize: Rift mages do things (physically pulling things from the Fade plus using the Veil) normal mages don't do. There is also a chance, logically speaking, that no one else but Solas (or mage!Inquisitor) can accomplish such a feat without dying a horrific death.
Codex Entry
From "Power Bleeds: Harness the Flow." Your Trainer's words make one passage stand out:
There are no tomes dedicated to this manipulation. There has been no time for academics, only the practical—and not in a manner that mitigates risk. Power in a raw form has found an outlet, both visible and in ways that only we of arcane proclivity can sense. The risk is great.
An account:
From this page forward, these are the notes of Thelric. They began as the work of my mentor Julion, and I will continue in the research she began, as she cannot, because she is dead. The rift we were examining did not react well to her last investigation. We believed ourselves prepared for demonic manifestation. We were not prepared for how the energies we expected would be encountered. Well-versed in the forces that magic can produce, my senior was surprised by an alteration, a deviance. That which previously had to be coaxed is now a flood that must be staunched. The same amount in different intensity, quick to expose fault in the way it is accessed. She drew too much, expecting resistance. There was none, and her form suffered the brunt. Tread carefully in studies of new matters, for I cannot unsee the end of her.
Scattered symbols and sketches follow.
[source – DA wiki; bolding mine]
Apparently DA:I has a thing for hiding the true horror in Codex Entries and off-hand comments.
Here, we learn one key fact: The school of Rift Magic is relatively new ('no tomes dedicated to this manipulation'). I think it's safe to assume the possibility - and thus research concerning it - emerged around the time the Breach appeared. So it's new, people have no idea what they're doing, but it somehow works. A little like the whole time magic thing, funnily. (That brings me back to a lot of questions I have about the Veil: Just how powerful is it? Just how deeply is it intervened with Thedas?)
Reading further, the entry seems to (only) stress how dangerous Rift Magic is. Who would have thought! No, really, it's a fair point to empaphize. I'm not certain the Trainer and his previous teacher (or anyone else but Solas) know what kind of role the Veil plays in this, and so of course experiments are going to get ugly. The Veil holds a much greater importance than the people of Thedas realize.
And, in a very similar vein: The people of Thedas don't know much about directly interacting with the Fade through, say, a rift, which poses another risk. The wiki entry establishes two things in particular that are relevant here: Using spells (in the Fade itself) has unpredictable results, and one can draw unprecedented power from it while sleeping.
The codex entry cited above proves that. A rift is a direct connection to the Fade, and thus unpredictable ('She drew too much, expecting resistance. There was none') and that power is too much to handle ('her form suffered the brunt').
My theory is that, while a certain flunction is natural to the Fade, the Veil also plays a role here. Which I'm not sure. But it has one.
Personally, I wouldn't be sure the risks of a horrific death outweigh the benefits of power, but let's look more in depth at that!
Skills
Which brings me to the abilities themselves.
The first two you can choose from are Veilstrike and Stonefist. (Which I think should have had their names changed but, oh, well.)
Veilstrike: “You recreate your own fist from the essence of the Fade and smash nearby foes to the ground.” (Upgrades being Punched Down and Wounded Veil, but they don’t have anything interesting for this analysis. Note the names, though.)
Curious here is the 'recreate [...] from the essence of the Fade' part here. On first glance, it sounds like a rather ordinary spell, right? But it's not. That's just the 'hiding in plain sight for the first playthrough' aspect of Solas' character.
Mages do shape their spells with energy from the Fade (as far as my assumptions go). Maybe they can also recreate something. I'll give them that much. But the essence of the Fade - the inherit, unchanging nature of it - can't be manipulated by them. I think that's specifically a trait only Dreamers can have. (More evidence for my 'Rift Mage should have been Solas' personalized, individual specialization' hc!)
There is an argument to be made if this already constitutes for 'pulling matter from the Fade', but this isn't even the funkiest part yet.
Stonefist: “You summon a boulder from the Fade and smash it into your target, sending them flying.” (Upgrades being Shatterstone and Unblockable Force.)
'Summon a boulder from the Fade', you know, as in, bring physical matter from the Fade to the other side of the Veil. A thing that is pretty much unheard of. Remembers what happens to spirits when they pass violently through the Veil? There is an entire game dealing with that. (I mean, stones won't hopefully turn into demons, but my point is that bringing things through, usually, is not a wise idea.
Another thing someone could have commented on.
Passives: Restorative Veil, Encircling Veil, Smothering Veil, Twisting Veil.
Unfortunately, neither of these descriptions give me much, but they all have the ‘Veil’ component in their name, so that’s interesting.
Upon closer inspection, the Veil can function in a variety of ways: speeding up mana recovery, further weakening enemies, boosting your own damage. (Veilstrike being an example of a means of attack.)
Now, my question here would be: Do over mages notice changes in the Veil? Do they feel it shift and bend? If not, well, that's one thing. if they do, even subconsciously, I'd want banter. (I want a lot of banter, though. Just generally speaking.)
Pull of the Abyss: “You create a tiny rift that pulls enemies toward a central point.” (Upgrades being Shaken Veil and Devouring Veil.)
I can live with never hearing anything about everything else. Sure. But this one? This damned skill? You're telling me I read that the first time I played the game, nodded, and that was it?
'You can create a tiny rift-' I'm sorry, do you what now? After a good a couple of hours of learning just how bad rifts are?
And the upgrade names. Shaken Veil, Devouring Veil - is there anything this thing can't do, except for becoming more and more horrifying and giving me bad vibes ofr whatever DA4 will do with it?
Firestorm: “You summon flaming meteors, raining fire down upon enemies all over the area for the next several seconds. This ability consumes and is powered by focus.”
This one is ... honestly, I don't like it being here. It's an AOE skill, which does fit in with the rest, but it's fire and it seems rather randomly assigned compared to other focus abilities with a more personal note (Haste, Rampagne, Cloak of Shadows, Mark of the Rift).
Doesn't give a lot here to analyze, except that raining down flaming meteors is the level of (global) destruction I can see happening in the future if Solas isn't stopped. So. That's fun.
(It's the ultimate skill in the Fire/Ice tree in DA:II, or at least the ability there has the same name.)
DA: II Comparison
Nearing the end, I'll take a brief look at the Force Mage specialization from DA:II and the Primal base skill tree for mages. Both have some interesting similarities.
First, Primal.
Stonefist: “The mage hurls a stone projectile that strikes with massive force.”
It's only the name and the effect, honestly, but it is curious to see it in a skill tree that focuses exclusively on the elements earth and lightning. (Because Pride demons also use electricity ... yeah, yeah. I'm reading too much into this.)
Petrify: “The mage entombs an enemy in stone, leaving the foe temporarily unable to move. However, the target becomes more resistant to damage for the duration of the spell.”
This has nothing to do with Rift Mage, but in light of Trespasser, I'll just leave it here for your consideration. Petrifying people is neither new nor exclusive to Evanruis.
Now, onto Force Mage.
Fist of the Maker: “The mage slams enemies into the ground with incredible power, against which armor is no protection.”
The effect sounds like Stonefist (Primal) and Veilstrike.
Pull of the Abyss: “The mage conjures a maelstrom of energy that draws enemies to its center while slowing them to a crawl.”
This one is similar to the Rift Mage skill with the same name, so it might have served as an inspiration (or base).
Overall, though: nothing much to say here. Maybe I could talk more about Rift Mage being focused on crowd control, but that is probably for game-play balance. I could connect that to Solas' character and analyze every little thing to death. I'm not doing it, though.
Specialization Dialogue
Solas: You have begun practicing new magical forms. Interesting. You seem to be drawing upon the raw substance of the Fade, likely using your mark as a catalyst. I use similar techniques, although it took me years to learn that. Why did you choose such an esoteric area of study?
Inquisitor: (if chosen) I hoped that studying such magic would me help better understand the Fade.
Solas: While our fight affords little time for formal study, the wise can better themselves even in the midst of battle. Perhaps especially then. I hope your new studies serve you well.
[source]
Let’s go through this slowly.
‘You seem to be drawing upon the raw substance of the Fade-’ Alright, we’ve talked about that. Makes sense he’d comment on it. ‘likely using your mark as a catalyst’ Sorry? The Inquisitor is doing what? I’m not saying it’s not possible, I’m just saying it might not be an overly smart idea to use the Anchor in that way. Because it’s attached to the Inquisitor’s arm. And because the Inquisitor knows what happens if it snaps out of control. So, purposefully doing something that might cause you agonizing pain? Mh. Yeah. No, thanks.
Also. The 'drawing upon the raw substance of the Fade' part makes me think that the Anchor does give the Inquisitor Dreamer-like abilities. Forcefully, and possibly difficult to control, and the Inquisitor might not be aware of it, but. That would be an interesting aspect to explore.
‘I use similar techniques, although it took me years to learn that’. Well. Yeah. Mostly a sound response, except I’m not really sure it's true. Why does he say years? Because he didn’t go right to sleep after creating the Veil, or because he studied such methods theoretically beforehand? I doubt he refers to the time Inquisition spans, because it’s not that long, cannocially, (isn't it like ... a year? I forget what the devs said), but … I don’t know. It doesn't sit right with me. Solas never truly outright lies, so there is probably some merit in it.
‘Why did you choose such an esoteric area of study?’ That’s … an interesting way to ask. Sure, there is a very small group who has this specialized knowledge, but it feels a little like deflection.
The rest of the conversation doesn’t give much for me to analyze.
Conclusion
TL;DR: There should have been banter. Or Rift Mage should have been a personalized, individual specialization.
Pull of the Abyss is the funkiest skill in the entire game, from a meta-perspective, because tearing a hole into the Veil is the opposite of what the Inquisitor is trying to do.
There are also many more questions than answer to take away from this regarding the Veil and the Fade and how Solas manages not to blow his cover, but I believe there are theories about at least the two former points out there.
I thank you very much for bearing with me for this long!

“Let him go.”
Riza orders the Fuhrer to step down, to remove his swords from the Colonel’s hands, to stop piercing his flesh. Her gun is trained on him easily and Riza discovers she has no qualms about shooting the man in charge of the country. She will not hesitate to do so if he so much as breathes in the wrong way.
After his appearance, and his assault on the Colonel, Riza had watched the tips of Bradley’s swords pierce through the Colonel’s palms, had seen them bury themselves in the gaps in the stone beneath her commanding officer. With her heart in her throat, Riza had inhaled sharply and drawn her weapon without pause, training it on Bradley’s head.
Riza’s voice didn’t betray her raging emotions within. For years – over a decade – she’d kept them under wraps for a variety of reasons. And even now, faced with this horrifying scenario, she did not let them surface. As much as she wanted to, she wouldn’t do it again. Not after her confrontation with Lust. She’d made a promise to the Colonel, and separately, in private, to Roy, not to.
“You were always an exemplary soldier, Lieutenant Hawkeye, following every order without question or complaint,” Bradley remarks. His spine straightens but does not remove his swords from the ground beneath the Colonel’s palms. He does not stop from looming over Mustang but turns his head to look at her. It’s reminiscent of a shark swimming right towards its prey, going for the kill, but Riza does not let that analogy get to her. She strengthens her grip on her pistol instead. “What has changed now?”
He’s toying with her. If she argued against any of his orders while his hostage, he’d have her killed.
A memory suddenly pops into her mind.
“You could always court martial me, sir.”
Riza’s eyes flick to quickly look down at the Colonel, lying pinned, helpless, and watching her anxiously on the floor. Mustang never would, but she misses the days where she could argue lightly against his orders and do what she felt was right and just by him and others she cared about and supported.
The doctor with the gold tooth writhes in agony above the Colonel, Bradley, and Pride, trying to call out for help and salvation, but the homunculi ignore him. Unfortunately, Riza has to as well, for she has seen how quick Bradley is and has felt the terror and harshness of Selim’s shadows, so cannot let herself slip for a second. If she does, it may cost her life. Or the Colonel’s.
“Simply doing my duty to this country and it’s citizens, sir,” she replies evenly. She holds no remorse for her actions. Not after the Fuhrer took her hostage for so long and the team discovered he was part of a scheme to try and kill everybody.
“Your duties involve following my orders, Lieutenant.”
Bradley is reminding her of her position as he trains his single eye upon her, but Riza tries her best to ignore it. It’s unnerving how piercing his gaze is, but she holds steady. She will not give into him and his intimidation.
“I am the highest authority to you. At ease, soldier.” He bites out the words, forcing them out as he tries to keep a lid on his fury.
“Not this time, sir.” She will not blindly follow his orders. Images of the desert flash inside Riza’s mind. Not again.
It angers him, but before he can react properly, Pride quite possibly saves her hide.
“We don’t have time for this, Wrath,” Pride sneers suddenly. He glares at Riza and she stares back, unflinching. She’s an expert at this by now after so many months under their scrutiny. She will not fall now at the final hurdle.
In response to Pride, Bradley angles his head towards him, looking away from her, and Riza feels herself relax momentarily. She does not turn complacent. Far for it. She’s too wired and on edge with the Colonel pinned in a transmutation circle underneath a homunculus’ feet to be close to any semblance of calm. But with Bradley’s gaze no longer pinning her, it’s a welcome reprieve. Her shoulders relax and lower a fraction.
“Enough of this conversation,” Pride continues. “We’ve got more important things to do.”
“Of course.” Bradley sounds so calm that it causes the knot inside Riza’s stomach to tighten. It’s the same knot that’s filled with unease and uncertainty regarding their current situation. It trembles and contracts as she stabilises herself and recentres her weapon so it’s ready to make a kill shot if need be.
“We have more important things to do,” Bradley repeats quietly to himself. His voice is without emotion, completely different from the rage-tinged tone he’d used just moments ago. Under his moustache, Riza sees a small smirk. One corner of his mouth quirks upwards.
In a flash, he rips the swords out of the Colonel’s palms, causing him to cry out in pain. They must have snagged on his skin because his loud gasp was laced with anguish.
Riza fires unflinchingly as Bradley charges at her.
“Lieutenant!” The Colonel’s cry is a gasp. She knows he fears for her, but she cannot focus on that right now.
Her finger does not let up on the trigger and it is relentless. She doesn’t have time to pay attention to it, but behind Bradley, Pride’s shadows dance around the room and she cannot fathom why. If she could spare enough of her concentration and tear it away from the charging homunculus, she’d realise the shadows were protecting Pride’s main body from her bullets flying behind the Fuhrer.
Bradley is too fast. He ducks underneath her weapon and outstretched arms, swinging around to her back.
Before she can blink, Riza can feel the kiss of cold metal on her throat.
Shit.
Her eyes widen, and so does the Colonel’s. His teeth are gritted together as he’s trapped in the transmutation circle, but his eyes meet hers immediately. It’s interesting to note how her own gaze zoned in on his during her sudden moment of helplessness, but Riza knows exactly why. She does not deny it to her heart.
“You’re a pest,” Bradley hisses in her ear.
The metal moves easily against her skin, like a knife moving through butter, and she hears the Colonel yell. As her body crumples to the floor he calls to her. He barks her rank, pleading with her to stay with him and focus on him. Her head hits the ground hard, and she’s dazed for a second. Her vision turns grey, and she cannot focus on anything, but still hears the Colonel calling out to her.
“Hawkeye!”
The others try to surge forward to intervene, but Pride’s shadows lash out and keep them at bay, pushing them backwards towards the outer wall. The homunculus forces them away from the two on the ground, preventing them from helping.
This is it.
She’s lying on the floor, bleeding out, with no one to assist her, and the Colonel is going to be forced to open the portal against his will.
She was supposed to watch his back and protect him. She was supposed to make sure no harm came to the Colonel so he could forge ahead and set in motion the plans he’d voiced to her over a decade ago. This was not how this was supposed to happen. Things changed in nanosecond and Riza’s brain has whiplash from trying to keep up.
“Do it, Pride.” Bradley’s anger is back under control. The bout of rage he’d experienced while advancing on her is gone. Or, it is back underneath his mask, hidden out of sight but simmering just below the surface.
Riza’s eyes meet the Colonel’s – no, Roy’s. His eyes are wide and panicked. She watches him strain against the dark tendrils holding him in place, but his struggle is futile and probably harming him. Through blurring vision she can see the colour red around his hands and up his forearm. The restraints must be cutting into his skin. Her mouth opens, asking him to remain still and not hurt himself. To not harm himself trying to escape to try and help her.
Impossible, she thinks to herself. Roy Mustang would tear the world apart for you. And you, him.
“Colonel –!” She wants to cry out to him, but with her injury it’s just a croak. A strangled, garbled call that doesn’t sound much like anything.
“Lieutenant!”
The homunculi ignore Roy’s cry, filled with such helplessness and anxiety. His expression is one of horror as their predicament hits him full force. His fight abates slightly, it stutters as his chest heaves with panicked breaths while realisation settles upon both their bones simultaneously.
They’re stuck and completely at the mercy of their enemies, with no hope of escape. No hope at all.
“It’s a shame to waste a soul,” Pride remarks quietly, sounding as though he’s talking to himself as he stares at the struggling doctor. His eyes lower lazily and focus on Riza. “When we have a perfectly good one right there.”
“Do it, Pride,” Bradley repeats, snapping this time. His mask is slipping.
Pride’s gaze lingers on her for a fraction of a second longer before turning back to look at the Colonel. His expression is unbothered by what he’s about to do. The complete opposite to the terror Riza can feel building within her.
You’re going to die, and he’s going to be forced through the gate.
“What will be taken from you Colonel, I wonder?”
Roy’s pained scream fills the air and infiltrates the gaps between her ribs. The sound cuts through her painfully, rattling her bones and constricting around her heart. She was supposed to prevent something like this from happening, but she didn’t.
Her vision fades and blurs even more intensely than before as the blue light from the human transmutation turns almost white. She cannot breathe. She cannot think.
The light winks out, leaving nothingness. The doctor falls to the ground, rolling slightly from the impact but Riza can no longer focus enough to determine what has happened to him.
You’re dying and he’s gone.
There was still a chance… A toll must be paid to pass through the gate so he may return alive, able to press on forward and achieve their goals and beat the bastards who did this to them today…
But it will be without her.
As Riza lies there, in a pool of her own blood, hearing her comrades call desperately out to her, a tear escapes from her lids and runs down her temple. She’s breaking her promise to the Colonel, to Roy. She’s leaving him, but it’s against her will, just like he had been forced through the gate against his.
She doesn’t want to leave him.
Images are flashing through his mind as he travels to the gate. It’s too much to bear inside his head. It feels like information is being stuffed into his brain far too quickly, and there’s too much. It’s overflowing. He sees snippets of his life, his past, and perhaps, what is yet to come?
Then there’s Riza, lying on the ground, clutching at her neck and lying in a pool of her own blood, but Roy blinks and she’s gone.
“Riza,” he gasps, the memory of what was done to her penetrating the fog inside his brain. It consumes him and his eyes squeeze closed. It does nothing though, it’s all he can see. It’s seared into his brain. He cannot escape the image of her dying, and him unable to help her.
The white room he suddenly finds himself in is featureless and unforgiving in its brightness. It hurts his eyes. Roy is reeling from arriving in the sudden and jarring expanse of white nothingness he finds himself in after passing through the gate, but he still squints and looks around frantically, looking for Riza, for some familiarity, momentarily forgetting himself as he’s overcome with his grief.
“What happened to her?” He demands an answer from the white being with the chilling smile. “Where is she?”
His questions go unanswered. When Roy starts to advance on it, the being simply smiles at him. After he takes about five steps, something secures around his aching wrist and jerks him backwards. Looking frantically down, wondering what is halting his approach, he realises with horror that these… things look similar to what Pride had used to restrained him before within the circle.
Not again.
“Is she okay?” His frantic cries are ignored.
Roy fights the tiny hands but there is no use. He cannot best them and it's worthless to try, but he continues to shout, beg, and pressure the smiling being to tell him what happened to Riza. To ask if she’s all right and going to live.
He has to. He needs to know.
Roy is drawn backwards, through a towering doorway, and into an inky black existence. Just like before, the last image he sees before everything goes black is chills him to his core. That white thing is still smiling at him in the distance, and for the first time since arriving there, Roy’s hoarse voice falters.
He will not receive any answers. He can yell until he is blue in the face, but no one will tell him if she’s okay, if she’s alive, or what happened to her. Terror was a constant companion after seeing Bradley’s sword slice through Riza’s flesh, but now panic was threating to overcome him once again.
Roy cannot lose her. He can’t.
The doors slam with a finality, leaving him in complete darkness that Roy gets the feeling he will never be able to escape from.
He’s blind.
The last thing he saw was Truth’s unnerving smile, and before that it was Riza on the floor, bleeding out and dying in front of him. That image was the last thing he saw in this world and it’s burned into his mind forever. It will not leave him be in his sudden pitch-black world.
He hates it. Abhors it. He wants to escape it but can’t. It’s with him always. A companion that lays out all of his failings before him. Roy chokes when he thinks about how she was left lying there, alone, critically injured, and he did nothing, could do nothing, to help or ease her pain.
Father tosses him around like a ragdoll, but Roy is still trying to adjust to being blind. He’s blinking furiously, hoping it will all turn out to be a horrible nightmare, but it’s futile. No matter how many times he blinks he cannot shift that image of her.
Is she even still alive?
He will not accept anything less.
“Sir?”
His head whips up and swings around frantically in its search. Roy thinks he may have been mistaken but… It is entirely possible his mind is playing a cruel trick on him, but he would also recognise her voice anywhere.
There’s a pressure on his forearm that commandeers his attention.
“Roy?”
The voice sounds scratchy. It catches as it pronounces the ‘y’ in his name, but Roy is filled instantly with recognition. The muscles of his face go slack as he stares wide eyed, yet unseeing, at the person he knows is in front of him.
Relief explodes within him. Muscles all over his body quiver and shake with it, and Roy cannot help himself. Every consequence, and everyone else, be damned. He surges forwards and upwards to his knees to wrap his arms – albeit clumsily – around Riza Hawkeye’s shoulders tightly.
He doesn’t even need her to confirm it. He knows it’s her by the smell of her shampoo and the faint smell of her perfume. It’s barely there underneath the smell of blood and the day’s grime, but it’s there, with him. It anchors Roy completely and tears surge into his eyelids.
“You’re alive,” he whispers.
Hands clutch desperately at his back. “I’m alive,” she confirms quietly.
Roy doesn’t care. He buries his face in the crook of her neck, and as an afterthought he realises he was lucky. It was not her injured side his face happened upon. Underneath his lips her skin is smooth and unmarked by the homunculi’s cruelty.
Roy inhales deeply and his eyes squeeze tightly closed as he savours the feeling of holding her, of knowing she is alive.
The last time he saw her, she was bleeding out. Dying. Chance, fate, or whoever, were smiling upon him today though, and Roy is grateful. He will take it. Roy doesn’t question her survival, just takes it at face value because that’s all he’s ever wanted in this last traumatic hour.
She’s alive.
Riza is alive.
His worst fear, his nightmare, had not come to pass after all, when it had seemed so likely before and he’d been left floundering, not knowing what the outcome would be.
The ‘how’ can come later. A tear escapes from beneath his closed lids and Roy simply rejoices in that fact while they have a quiet moment together. Another one follows suit when one of her hands lifts to rest upon the back of his head and pats it twice. It seems like a simple, friendly gesture, but he can feel the way the fingers of her other hand tighten their pressure upon his back. She’s still clinging to him and does not let up.
She’s alive. He can’t see her, but he can feel her touch and hear her breath.
“Are you okay?”
He wants to laugh. The joy bubbles up inside his chest when he hears the concern laced within her voice, simply because he is so happy to hear it.
Even if he cannot see her, this is enough for now.
“Are you?” He has no time to focus on himself. Not when the last time he saw her, she was so near death.
“Mei patched me up,” Riza explains, sounding hoarse.
Roy vows that owes that young alchemist a life debt. He will work until his dying breath to ensure it is paid for saving Riza’s life.
He pulls her in hurriedly for another embrace. It affirms that she is really there and breathing, and alive.
What he’s about to say is risky, but he’s in the mood for it. After what they’d just been through, Roy feeds the impulse because he needs her to know what he’s truly thinking.
Just in case.
When it came to Riza Hawkeye, his decisions always did have the tendency to be ruled by his heart, and while Riza still involved her heart completely, she was always the more level-headed and reasonable one, given their circumstances as subordinate and commanding officer.
Still, the situation called for it.
“I love you.” It’s whispered against the skin of her neck. Roy knows Riza hears him because her body stiffens with surprise.
Riza doesn’t respond until after a beat or two. It’s a simple nod, but it’s enough to know she acknowledges what he’s said. Roy doesn’t expect her to reply. They both know where they stand with one another and have done for years. The first time the sentiment had been expressed was after he returned from the academy, so this is not a shock revelation. It’s a means of comfort. A reassurance. And Roy feels it needs to be said. It’s also been a while since he’d last said those words to her, but right now it feels like it’s been too long. Another wrong in his book, but one he could correct immediately.
“I love you too, Roy.”
He blinks, surprised that she has said it back to him among the company of so many people, but they must not be paying attention to them.
Roy tightens his arms around her.
She’s alive, and she knows how he feels about her.
She knows.
They both do.
She’s okay.
That one thought eases all of his fears and leaves him feeling light, like he’s floating on air, so he buries his face into the crook of her neck once more to find an anchor.

Hi! I'm excited for your posts :3 It would be really interesting to read your analysis on Jimin's chart!
So today we’re doing Jimin’s chart and my analysis of it. Let me make it clear right off the bat, that since I’m not a professional astrologer, some things may not match up, further since we’re not super sure of his birth time, it’ll definitely affect the reading. What I can be sure of is that I’ll do my best and I’m completely open to constructive criticism from you all!
Now lets get on with some basic stuff, for those who have not yet read the post with Namjoon’s moon analysis, I’ll again reiterate some principles of Vedic astrology! In the scenario that you’re still confused with all this jargon, feel free to reach out and I’ll be more than happy to help you out.
Starting out, we have to note that while western astrology is usually more advisory in nature, Vedic astrology’s main purpose is to predict. Also, we usually go a sign back from western astrology in Vedic astrology, so according to that for example, if you’re a libra rising, you become a virgo rising in Vedic astrology and so on and so forth. All planets will also shift back a sign, so a Capricorn Mercury will become a Sagittarius Mercury.
Now let’s be aware that the chart may be a bit different, but given the main d1 (Lagna) chart remains the same for about 2 hours, let’s focus on that and the moon chart (rashi chart) for this reading. We can also just look at d9 for strength but not house placements as that can be time sensitive. So, we can take a two hour margin of time discrepancy and still predict accurately.
For this reading, we have taken 13th October 1995 as the day and 10:34pm as the time of birth, with the location set to Busan.
OTHER THAN THIS, LET ME KNOW IF YOU WANT ME TO DO A BIRTH TIME RECTIFICATION FOR JIMIN LATER ON SO WE CAN GET MORE ACCURATE PREDICTIONS.
Since this is a general chart analysis, we shall be covering topics briefly and discussing the moon, ascendant and sun. For an in depth reading, do pick a smaller and focussed topic as we can honestly keep going on and on about a chart.
THIS READING WILL BE DONE IN 4 PARTS, FOLLOWING THE ASCENDANT, MOON, SUN AND MISCELLANEOUS.
On with the actual reading now-
Right off the bat, we can see Jimin is born into Gemini, with his ascendant at 16’49’, within the Nakshatra of Arda, within the fourth quadrant or pada. His lagna lord, Mercury is retrograde in the 4th house conjunct with sun, in the sign of virgo, where Mercury is naturally exalted as well as Mercury being in its Mooltrikon sign here. Secondly, the lord of Ardra, rahu, is sitting in the 5th house conduct Venus. Further the first house receives aspects from both rahu(north node) and mars. We can keep going but we’ve got a whole chart to cover here.
Now onto explaining what all this means. Being born into gemini makes the natives jovial and social by nature, all while having a very sharp mind. The phrase that comes to mind is ‘a wolf in sheep’s clothes’, not because they’re inherently bad or something, but because people don’t give them enough credit for their genius calculating mind. Throwing the Nakshatra of Ardra into this, I can definitely see the dots connecting slowly. Ardra literally means ‘the fortunate one’. An apparent destructive Nakshatra, given its ruled by the deity Rudra, it has several different aspects to it.
People born in ardra tend to have very extreme emotions and may be prone to anger issues and a habit of destructing anything they deem imperfect. People in this Nakshatra also make great actors due to their ability to mimic others well, a quality that makes them well liked and sociable, often giving them a dual persona of seriousness and goofiness. Such people are extremely affectionate and motherly, And men may display an effeminate quality to them, given that the Nakshatra is female in nature. Further, since rudra is also representative of the half man half woman god, (Ardhnarishwar), such people may have a conflict with wanting to show more and more stereotypically masculine sides to them and thus may engage in extreme dieting or bodybuilding to achieve this.
On a professional front, such people are extremely hardworking and rule abiding, sometimes to the extent of being self destructive. They have a humorous disposition and often hide behind that persona. They also keep a tight circle of friends and often check up on them. Compassionate and coolheaded, such people are often the centre of attention. The tend to multitask very often and find it hard to remain still and let go. lastly, such people and their career usually peaks after the age of 32 (aaahhh whaaat jimin).
lastly, his ascendant is in the last quadrant, which is ruled by Pisces and thus Jupiter. Being in an enemy sign here, people can have body image issues (1st house is our body and mind) and mental destress regarding their capabilities. Such people also love to engage in drinking and are very philanthropic in nature, loving to elevate the unfortunate people in society.
His lagna lord is retrogade in 4th house in virgo, conjunct sun and without aspects. The former indicates that a personal has a constant up and down tussle with their self image, and people often have demeaned them for either their looks or personality. This causes a person to be extremely insecure in themselves, and thus may require constant coddling and words of affirmations. Going four houses away, we can see that his mother is someone who truly shaped him and his persona. Their childhood upbringing plays a big role in them. Their childhood could have been tumultuous, with constant disagreements and obstacles.
They may have problems expressing their emotions or penning down their words, or they might be a very cautious person in terms of what they speak and to whom they speak. Mercury is also exalted here, giving it power, so we see that eventually the native breaks forth of this dilemma in life. They may have a career related to communication (see mercury aspecting 10th house), and they will have a successful career at that. The person may own a lot of real estate with this position. Since its mercury in virgo, such a person may be brilliant with handling technology and may even pursue IT based careers due to the ease of handling gadgets.
Given that here, sun in conjunct, right off the bat, the person must resemble their father a lot in terms of looks. They also have a regal appearance that demands attention. They may be well spoken. Their father was dominating and shaped them into who they are. Since mercury and sun aren’t friends, we can also see that such a person may have anger issues and problems controlling their tongue. This conjunction also forms the renowned Budh-Aditya Yoga, a conjunction that shows extreme smartness in a person. While this doesn’t necessarily have to be academic, such people can be very sharp and grasp things easily, they may even have knowledge on a wide variety of subjects and be extremely curious to learn more. Due to this, a person also become a great communicator, and people enjoy listening to them talk as they hold people’s attention with their unique way of speaking. They can be a great salesperson or politician with such a placement. Studies should come easy, as would reading anything from novels to detailed instructions. There may be a talent for writing stories and one may be good at interpreting symbols, font design or calligraphy.
Now going to rahu and Venus in 5th. This is a great placement honestly, given that Venus, the lord of love, beauty and creativity is sitting in the house of children, past karma, creativity and primary education, in the sign of libra. This would indicate that a native with their Nakshatra lord here would be extremely creative (rahu blows qualities out of proportion), kind of childlike innocence that would attract people who would want to literally ‘nurture’ or mother them, or inversely they could themselves be very motherly to their friends, such people also have good education till primary level (undergraduate level) and also carry a lot of good karma from their past life, which results in gains now.
Further the sign of Libra signifies that their beauty or creativity would be very magnetic, they exude charm and regalness, they tend to attract people like moths and have a very star crossed lovers kind of personality. Given Venus is the lord of 12th and 5th house itself, sitting in its mooltrikon sign of libra, it is extremely powerful here. Such a person may have alien or distinguished ideas, explore new arenas, write about devotion and deep philosophical experiences. They may also be very fond of children and children’s literature.
Given the 12th house is also the house of paranormal and extraterrestrial beings, such a person may be very in tune with their own selves and may regularly take part in activities of the occult like tarot, astrology, magick or occult like practices, or at least they have the natural capacity to do so. They may also be great psychologists with this placement and read people’s minds, with acute sixth sense and empathetic powers. Such a placement may also give clairvoyant abilities to a person. They may have troubles with their left eye, liver and digestive track also.
Rahu in libra makes someone overtly sensual and starry eyed about the world, seeing stuff through rose tinted glasses. Here in the 5th house, this may give an unrealistic image of love and grandeur, cause obsession like love, unrealistic image of self to the world. They may be also seen as a sex symbol of sorts often time, but also have a very cute site to them, as libra is a dual sign itself. Given its the ruler of 9th house here, where retrograde Saturn sits, the person may have many failures in their love life or have a very unsuccessful love life till much older, when Saturn matures at 36 years. further, aqueous gives an affinity for wanting to stand out, attracting people and being attracted to people with unconventional personalities (vmin stans) and of course, being excited about all things foreign. They may have an affinity for writing about unusual and unrelated scenarios or daydreaming about them. They might want to provide comfort to unusual people and nurture them alot, while also wanting to stand out and become unconventional themselves, they hate being blended into the crowd with this position.
As for the mars and rahu aspect to the lagna, it would largely affect the physical and mental state here. Rahu has a tendency to give long, elongated and cat like eyes to people, or very exaggerated features in general, as rahu represents the extremes. These people have unusual but magnetic (rahu is temptation) looks, which only get better and better with age (rahu is the oldest after Saturn). Mars over here gives a ruddy complexion and untidy and unruly hair. It gives a stout athletic body, which is made extremely lean due to his gemini rising. These people have exaggerated Adam’s apple and extremely masculine features (look at his face, at points he looks like he’s a statue with those sharp chiseled features). Mars may give a very sexual look to a person too, making them look more hot than cute usually. The extremely emotive eyes of his are all thanks to ardra Nakshatra, which usually promises that (the eye smile?).
Such people may have very violent thoughts, due to mars. They might also be extremely passionate and would do anything to reach their goal. Rahu here brings a tendency to fall for addictions, such as alcohol and drugs.
So this is part 1 of jimin’s chart, I’ll analyze his sun, moon, miscelnous (house placements, atmakarka, amatyakarka, darakarka, divisional charts and a lot more in that)
Do let me know if you enjoyed reading this and if you have any feedbacks.

About the Reviewer: Q & A
Who are You?
My name is Stephanie, aka Gleeful Darren Criss Fan. I'm a wife, a mother of two, a teacher, and an aspiring author. I am also an avid crafter who makes jewelry in my spare time. If it sounds like I'm busy, that's because I am. I like staying busy. however, it does mean I don't always update my fics regularly.
Why did you start this blog? I started this blog because we have a huge fandom, with many fics out there for us all to devour. As a reader, I love having all of the options. However, as a writer myself, I know how much we love people to see and consume our creations. But because there are so many works out there, some of the lesser known authors are lost in the shuffle. I'm one of those. I'm ok with that now, but it was hard at first.
I started writing to get feedback. I also was suffering from severe depression. I just wanted to feel like I was good at something, and I wanted to share my stories and put smiles on my readers faces. Nothing makes me smile more than knowing I brought joy to others. This is another way I felt I could bring joy to readers. Because I suck at updating my own fics, I wanted to share fics that you guys would like and bring joy and recognition to their authors as well. It's a win-win.
What kind of fics should we expect to see recommended on here?
Ultimately, I am an avid reader and a writer myself, so I plan to spotlight well-written fics. Some will be well-known while others will be more obscure but still high quality. Basically, I love when a story ensnares me in the plot so deeply that I get lost in the world the author created. I hope to spotlight both older and newer fics, but I hope to focus on fic writers who are still active in the fandom.
I read a wide variety of tropes from canon to Alternate Universe, but my favorites are Best friends to lovers, fake dating, Writer Blaine or Writer Kurt, Actor Blaine or Actor Kurt, Musician Blaine or Musician Kurt, Designer Kurt, Model Blaine or Model Kurt, Artist Kurt or Artist Blaine, Daddy Kurt or Daddy Blaine, and Enemies to lovers. I have to say though that although I love these tropes, I love all kinds of fics and I try not to be closed-minded on what I read. You should see a variety of fic types recommended here.
What kinds of fics will we probably not see?
This is a Klaine endgame blog, so you will only see fics where Klaine are endgame. No Kurtbastian, SeBlaine, Kadam, Kelliott, or any other ships that are endgame. You will also not see recommendations from me of fics that have polygyny Kurt or Blaine, D/S fics, BDSM, MPREG, or Dark Kurt or Blaine. You will probably not see Gore, Extreme violence, or Underage Kurt or Blaine either. I'm not condemning these types of fics. I've read fics that fit into these categories. However, these are not tropes that I normally seek out. I also don't like reading infidelity fics.
However, I'm not saying you won't find these kinds of fics on here. Any Klaine fan who reads fic and wants to post a review on here is welcome to do so. So if you are someone that enjoys these types of fics, you are welcome to review them on here as long as Klaine is endgame. I do reserve the right to remove fic recommendations that don't adhere to the guidelines.
What kinds of fics do you write?
I love writing alternative meeting fics, particularly where Bkaine and Kurt meet online and don't know who they are talking to. I also love writing early Klaine, Alternate Universe, Writer Kurt or Blaine, and recently crack or humor fics. I also like to throw in some angst and humor in all of my stories. I will do a link to my fics if you all are interested.
How do I recommend a Fic?
First, review these guidelines:
1. You must've read the fic.
2. It must be Klaine-centric or at least feature Klaine heavily. No Seblaine, Kelliott, Kurtofsky, Kadam, Blainofsky, or other ship as endgame. It is ok if they start in a different relationship or have a midgame relationship as long as Klaine is endgame.
3. Make sure that your rec gives the following information: Fic name, author, Summary, Rating, Warning or triggers, Status (complete or WIP) and your review. Don't forget to include a link to the fic.
4. Try not to give spoilers for the fic.
5. Let's keep these reviews positive. My intention is so that authors are given another place so their work can be seen, and to help readers discover great fics.
Here's the format I use for my reviews.
Fic Name:
Fic Author(s):
Fic Summary:
Fic Trope(s):
Fic Length (Word Count):
Fic Rating:
Fic Warnings or Triggers:
Fic Status:
My Review:
Fic Link:
Do I need to contact you before I do a fic recommendation?
You don't have to contact me. I'll get a notification when you post.

Little Pistol - Daisy
Chapter 1
Previous Next
I'm trying to keep this in line with her canon personality to an extent here. Determined, focused, conniving and scheming. A little obsessive. But also needs to give herself a little pep talk to go through with things. Let me know how I'm doing?
Btw, title is by Brand New.

~---~
Convincing a miniaturized pocket god that your intentions are sound came surprisingly easy to her.
That could be in part due to all the prior planning. Considering every possible argument the goddess could come up with and creating contingencies to match. Really though, taking out Tikki's own advice and laying it out as a perfect reasoning quieted her down quite nicely. Not that Tikki agreed with her, but the logic was too sound to push back on and the little bug never expected Marinette to come up with such thoughts without getting emotional. It just wasn't the way the girl was as far as Tikki was concerned. So it could only be taken at face value without the usual accusations of her being overdramatic.
It was an early Saturday when she voiced her thoughts.
"Hey Tikki?"
"Yes, Marinette?" the red bug looked up from her perch.
"Our biggest priority is to stop akumas and find Hawkmoth, correct?"
"Of course. You know that," she dismissed.
"So is it reasonable to say that Chat has been a hinderance to our duty?"
"How do you mean?"
"He distracts me or sits out on important battles. Threatens to quit if details that don't pertain to our purpose are withheld. He refuses to remain professional in the face of an attack."
"Well yes, he has been rather unhelpful lately, but then again, you are teenagers. It's to be expected, I suppose. Though I do wish he'd be a bit more focused," she easily agreed.
Marinette bit back a victorious smile and kept her expression closed off but for the determined, calculating expression she saved for important moments. Like now.
"In that case, it would be a good idea to make him focus any way I can. To make it easier. To hurry along the hunt for Hawkmoth."
Tikki's expression became weary as she stared at her welder, taken off guard by the open statement, "I don't know, Marinette...What did you have in mind?"
"Nothing yet, but I think I'm going to start brainstorming some ideas. Maybe do a little research. Something needs to change though," she emphasized, staring down her kwami with a hopeful, prodding look until she hesitantly nodded her agreement.
With the god's blessing, she turned to her tablet, pulling up everything she could on different heroes and their methods. Down the rabbit hole she fell.
…
Some thirteen hours had passed and she felt the strain of her eyes and the bright burn to her retinas for the effort of her work. She refused to believe that no inspiration would come from this effort, though she'd moved on from conventional heroes and into a more sketchy territory by now, having been let down by the uptight views of others who'd obviously never been harassed or neglected by their partner and therefore wouldn't understand her need for a more, let's say, gray solution.
She'd seen the ideals of Superman and the Lanterns and the generalized view of both the Teen Titans and Justice League alike. Many worked with partners, many had betrayals or interpersonal problems. The solution they always took was for one or both parties to leave the team and travel to opposite sides of their country. Or world. Or separate worlds. Either way, avoidance was key. That didn't really work for her though. She had to stay in close contact with her partner while not truly working together. Remain civil within the same city limits. Fight side by side even. And it's not like she could just leave her responsibility here or allow Chat to go unchecked with a miraculous on his own.
Then she stumbled upon Batman's history. The infamous bat had many a partner or sidekick with their own rough history and seemed to be operating with them regularly still. His solution to a lost or dead partner seemed to be a steady stream of replacements. Unfortunately, unlike a vigilante suit, a miraculous has to resonate with the wearer and no one she knew and trusted would fit the black cat. So she was stuck with the one.
Still though, Batman apparently had a falling out with his first Robin who became Nightwing. Those two were seen together regularly now so something must have happened to fix their issues. Gods, she was so lucky the internet seemed to stalk these people hardcore enough to have so much information on them so readily available. However, looking deeper, the resulting theories and knowledge did not bode well for her. It seems Nightwing had been in much the same state as her and with zero apologies from the Bat, had forgiven the man and resumed operations as usual. Well she was done with forgiving and forgetting. She wanted a real solution, not just rolling over and letting Chat do as he pleased!
Alright, so Batman was the Chat Noir to the Robin's Ladybug. Maybe the others fared better?
Nope, second one died.
Current one seems to be a literal feral child out to bleed Gotham dry. Not sure how that helped, though maybe she could go just psycho enough to force Chat to be the responsible one? No, he'd just try and quit again.
Huh.
There was a third and fourth one apparently? Between the murder baby and the dead one. What happened to them?
The fourth was a blonde girl with a short stint. Seems she just moved departments since many speculated she might be a batgirl or working with a few others in the city. Not much more.
But what about the other one?
The third Robin, who worked with the Teen Titans for a stint. Who worked many years under the Bat, who gave away the title to the blonde only to return after and disappear once more with the coming of the blood toddler. What happened? Where'd he go?
…
Thousands had apparently asked the same question themselves. All signs seemed to point towards a betrayal. Something went wrong. The first resigned, the second died, the third just seemed to drop off the face of the planet. Did Batman kick him out? Replace him? For child's play, sword addition? She couldn't be sure, but it seemed the most likely guess. Much more believable than alien kidnapping or a quest for a dead man or his predecessor coming to life to end him.
But what after that?
Surely, Marinette could've stopped there. Obviously, this wasn't the same as her situation, but she couldn't help but be so very intrigued. She watched videos of the boy in his Robin suit (much more practical than the first two if you asked her, though still slightly shameful) fighting and flying across rooftops and working with his team. He was so. So. Efficient. So clean. Ruthless when he decided to be. Calculated. Everything she ever wanted to be.
He was amazing.
And then he disappeared.
Where did he go, that perfect Robin. How could anyone ever think the position needed an upgrade when the perfect bird was already there? It made no sense. And then she found him. Hunting through the rogues and heroes and inbetweens of Gotham, hidden in his own layerings of cover stories and identities. Her new aspiration of what a hero should be, mixed into the Anti-heroes of the city.
The vigilante of the more morally ambiguous variety, manipulating the world to the way he saw fit, using whatever method he wished. And the way he seemed to bend the city to his whim, well it matched quite well with how she wished her own city would be. She found her solution. Now it was showtime.
…
"Are you ready to apologize, m'lady?" Chat dropped down at her side, the akuma of the week tied up below them. It was a relatively easy battle, with no need for special abilities for once.
"Whatever for, Chatton?" Marinette asked, already tensing at the response she knew she'd receive. She hated when he tried to coerce her into apologizing for things that aren't her fault.
"For your neglect of your kitten, obviously."
"I don't have a kitten," she stated plainly.
"What? You wound me, to disown me so abruptly," he put a clawed hand to his chest, offense and hurt in spades marking his features.
"I can't disown what I never adopted," she went along with the analogy so he wouldn't complain about her ruining his fun again. The last thing she needed was his whining.
He perked up with this, "Well we can draw up some adoption papers right now if you wish? I'd love to be yours," he smarmed, leaning into her space further.
This was it. Time to turn the tables. To make this work in her favor. She just needed to play it right, the way her Robin did. By manipulating the enemy into doing her bidding. She could do this.
"That's just it, though. I don't believe you would," she frowned, letting her eyes soften the way she'd seen Lila do so often. Might as well learn something from the girl.
"What? I would," he insisted, eyebrows furrowing.
"See you say that, but where's the proof? You've done nothing but pester and punish me over these weeks. You say you love me, but then watch me get hurt by akumas and make me fight all alone and threaten to leave me. That's not the actions of a loving partner. It feels like you hate me."
That had him panicking.
"No no, I don't hate you, you're my sun and my moon. My everything. Surely you know your worth in my life. I only did those things to show you how much you hurt me." He attempted to reason with her.
"See, but I've never intentionally hurt you. And always apologized to you when I realized I had. Whereas you just admitted to causing me distress as a form of punishment. It seems to me that I'm far more attached to you than you are to me and I'm just not willing to hurt myself by getting involved with someone who so obviously dislikes me."
"I- no- that's not- I love you! I didn't mean to do that, I shouldn't have. Please believe me? I love you, Ladybug," he begged, ears dropping and body tensed in fear.
"I'm sorry, but until I see some proof, I can't do that," she shook her head before taking off home without a backward glance, leaving the cat to his misery.
…
That night, Tikki went straight to bed and refused to speak to her for the next two days.

“This is my favorite kind of weather.”
You jumped at the sudden voice. Though thunder crashed loudly outside, his voice seemed even louder. Jungkook slinked next to you, observing the storm outside. He smiled softly. You watched as he took a deep breath in, almost as if he was trying to smell the rain that hit against your window.
“Thunderstorms?”
Jungkook nodded. The lightning that struck the ground in the distance lit his face up slightly. He basked in the glow it gave him.
“It reminds me of when I was younger,” he muttered. “I used to be scared of them. Like to the point that I couldn’t be alone during one. But I remember my mom telling me something that changed the way I thought of them. ‘Thunderstorms are just like us,’ she’d tell me. ‘Sometimes, we feel the need to scream or cry. That’s what the storm does. It screams. It lets out all of the stress and the pressure that builds up over time. But what happens after you're finished? You feel better, calm. Thunderstorms are the same way. The moments right after a storm are always the calmest. That’s nature’s way of dealing with its own stresses.’”
You stared at Jungkook as he spoke. There was something special about the way he talked about his past. His eyes twinkled, the smile he wore was bittersweet. You could tell that it was hard for him to talk about everything he once had, but he didn’t seem to mind the feelings that came along with it. And the summer thunderstorm outside your window added to the atmosphere his words created.
Jungkook turned to face you, the same smile draped across his lips.
“After that, I never saw thunderstorms as something to be afraid of. More, something comforting. Knowing that there isn’t much of a difference between us.”
For a moment, there was an air of silence between the both of you. You drank his words like a fine wine, slowly falling under the comforting influence that they brought you. The storm continued to rage on and you couldn’t help but be put under a spell. It must be going through the same thing we are, you thought. So much change in such a short period of time. The rain pattered against the window harshly, thunder rumbling somewhere in the distance. The lightning lit up the darkened land, showing you the beauty that it brought.
“Wow,” you sighed. You weren’t sure what to say.
A quiet creak of the floorboards behind the two of you moved your focus away from the storm. In the doorway, Seokjin stood sheepishly with a hand raised to knock against the frame.
“Sorry, could I steal Jungkook?”
You nodded, sending the younger boy a glance in his direction. He gave you a small smile before following Seokjin back through the rest of the house. Once they left, you realized just how quiet it was. It seemed that the weather set a certain mood throughout the entire house, not one other person could be heard over the faint sounds of the wind and the rain.
It left you to easily slip into your thoughts. For as long as you could remember, thunderstorms weren’t your friend. Though, neither were they your enemy. You didn’t find comfort in the rain like Jungkook, but you were never really scared of them. It was an odd thing to think about; Jungkook’s words. Could you eventually find the comfort in the storm like he had?
“Fresh food coming through!”
You entered the dining area with a large plate of a variety of fruits and vegetables from the garden. You and Seokjin had gotten lucky, the growing season producing mouth-watering produce. You watched as the boys eyed the plate closely, ready to reach for whatever they could once you set it down. You teased them, holding it just above the tabletop. They whined, sending you impatient looks as you glanced around the table. Carefully, you set the plate down. They wait a moment for you to step back slightly before digging in. Hands flew across the table as fast as possible to keep from missing out on anything.
“Hey, leave some for Y/N,” Yoongi called out as he noticed Taehyung reaching for as many strawberries as he could get a hold of.
“Don’t worry. Take as much as you want from this plate. I grabbed some before.”
You looked at your boyfriend with a smile, moving to grab your own plate of goodies. Both him and Namjoon quietly sighed with relief when they saw the small mountain of fruit and vegetables on the dish. You settled yourself in the chair they left open between the both of them.
“These are so good,” Taehyung moaned.
You giggled lightly at the slightly embarrassing sight of the boy biting into the juicy fruit. His eyes opened only to catch your gaze, shying away with a tint of red coloring his cheeks.
“Well I’m glad you like them so much,” you laughed. “After that storm the other day, I was worried the garden was damaged, but I guess nothing can destroy the masterpiece Seokjin and I have done.”
Laughter filled the table. You glanced over to Seokjin who gave you a wink with red tinted ears. Though the fun is short lived when something slammed against the front door. The eight of you turned to face the area, watching as a couple figures poured through the, now, damaged entrance. All of the boys stood in defence, and you were about to as well before Yoongi and Namjoon pushed you back into your chair to stay behind them.
“Who are you?” Namjoon called out.
The three people that stood near the doorway didn’t say anything. You tried to get a glimpse of them, but the two boys stood side by side, keeping you out of view from the intruders. A light tap against the table switched your focus from the impending danger to Hoseok who stood on the other side of the table. His eyes stared at the front door, but he could tell he got your attention. Carefully, he motioned to the knife that sat on the tabletop. As quietly as possible, you reached for the knife. You were unsure what to do with it but you trusted Hoseok to tell you when the time was right.
“I said, who are you,” Namjoon repeated. His voice was more stern the second time.
“Whatchya hidin’ there pretty boy?”
You scrunched your face at the sound of the nasally voice. The grip you had on the knife grew tighter as you heard the sound of the floorboards creaking lightly, probably from them moving closer to the eight of you.
“Oh don’t give me that look. I know you’ve got a toy behind ya,” the voice continued.
Were they talking about you? They had to have been, there was no one else hiding. You tucked the knife carefully into your back pocket. Hoseok must have noticed what you were planning to do as his hand tried to gain your attention again. You ignored his attempts to stop you and pushed yourself up from the chair to step around Yoongi. The person who had been talking had brought his attention to you.
“Oo, you’re a nice one.”
“You didn’t answer his question,” you chided.
The man in front of you laughed. He stepped closer, tilting his head in amusement.
“That doesn’t matter, sweetheart. By the time we’re done with you and your little play things, you won’t be able to remember any of this.”
You glanced behind him, noticing the other two figures near the doorway. From first glance, they seemed as if they were ready to fight alongside the other. Though, the longer you looked, the more you noticed how the only other girl in the room seemed hesitant to do anything. Your eyes drifted back to the guy in front of you, and you too, tilted your head to match him.
“What is it that you want?”
One side of his lips quirked up in a sickly smirk.
“Everythin’ you guys have. But now that I’ve seen you, I want you as well.”
The girl behind him clenched her hands into fists. She shifted in her spot, making the floorboards underneath her creak. The guy in front of you glanced back slightly in response to the noise.
“Doesn’t look like your girlfriend here likes that idea,” you commented.
His eyes quickly found yours again. He emitted a growl, reminiscent of the tigers you saw in the zoo when you were young. He stepped forward. His hand reached for his hip, seemingly clutching something under his shirt.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” you warned casually.
You knew what he was hiding. There was no way you couldn’t have seen the glint of metal as the sun set through the windows behind you. A blade. You could feel the uneasiness of the boys beside you. From where you stood next to Yoongi, only Hoseok, Jimin, Taehyung, and Seokjin would have been able to see the knife in your pocket. Deciding you had enough of the man in front of you creeping closer to your family, you stepped forward yourself. You stuck your hands in your front pockets, rather focused on what he was going to do than to defend yourself right away. You stopped a couple of feet away from the man.
In one swift move, the man took the weapon from his side and lunged toward you, aiming for your shoulder. You twisted, making sure that he could only reach your arm. A few quiet gasps came from the others in the house. You turned your head, your now bleeding arm faced the attacker.
“You really shouldn’t have done that.”
You dropped down, kicking into his knees. The man stumbled back from the force. The move gave you enough time to return to a standing position, your finger raised to stop your boys from joining the fight. You could tell they were anxious to get their hands on the guy, but they knew better than to get in your way. The man glared at you, grasping the blade in his hand harder, his knuckles turned white. He charged toward you as fast as he could. With the little space you had, you dodged the attack, reaching for the arm that had the blade before it could touch either one of your boyfriends. They held their arms up in defence, but you managed to pull the man back in time that it barely nicked Namjoon’s forearm. You threw him with as much force as you could towards his friends. Though, he had grabbed your wrist before you could let him go, and he pulled you to face your boys. Your arm was twisted uncomfortably behind your back as the man held his blade up to your neck.
“One step and I kill her,” he growled towards them.
You had to think fast. His breath fanned against your neck as he dipped his head below your chin. You tried to squirm away from him, but he pressed the blade into your neck—enough to make it uncomfortable, but not to break any skin.
“Mm, you smell delicious.”
You watched as Namjoon’s jaw tightened, his cheeks sucked in slightly. Hot, but not the time to think about that. His eyes met yours and you gave him a wink and a small smirk. His eyebrows furrowed, but you didn’t waste any more time. You brought your free hand up to his neck and dropped to one knee as fast as you could. Leaning forward with all of your weight, you threw the man over your shoulder. He landed on the wooden floor, his back cracking slightly at the sudden contact. You had been lucky to catch him off guard as he had let go of both your arm and his blade in the action. You reached into your pocket, swinging the knife in front of you. The tip pointed at the center of the man’s neck. He closed his eyes, both in defeat and in pain, but you kept the knife against his neck in case he still had some energy left in him.
“Rule number one, never let your guard down,” you snarled.
“You know what this reminds me of?” Yoongi chuckled as he noticed your eye roll.
Hoseok cleaned your arm, a bandage already on your neck. The three intruders were long gone by now. The two that had been left by the door had to carry the one you fought out of your house, as the pain was too much for him to bear—not like you cared anyway. In the end, he had managed to break the skin a little on your neck from your last act of defence. Though, you didn’t notice it until the cool feeling of your blood slowly rolled down your neck afterwards.
“When we first met,” Yoongi finally answered.
It was a slightly sour memory for you as that was only the second time you had ever needed stitches in your life—which in fact, your arm healed nicely thanks to your best friend. Namjoon, who stood right beside him as you sat on your bed with Hoseok patching you up, gave his boyfriend an odd expression. You giggled lightly at the sight of his confused glance before he turned to you with the same look.
“What do you mean?” He asked.
You dropped your gaze, not wanting to answer his question. So instead, Yoongi answered it for you.
“She was trespassing, I was just trying to keep myself alive.”
“It’s not like you were the one who was injured worse,” you protested.
“Well, who was the one that was trying to act like a sexy cop to get me riled up?”
Namjoon’s arms waved around frantically.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. What are you guys talking about?”
Yoongi folded his arms in front of him. He shifted his weight to lean on one leg, sending you a smirk before replying.
“Basically, she and her little group had snuck into my home, tried to steal our food like the rats they were, then had the audacity to fight me for it all. She even threatened Jungkook!”
You were about to interrupt him when Hoseok gripped your arm tightly. He hissed at you to sit still as he tried to wrap the bandage around the injury. You sat back with a huff, rolling your eyes at his words.
“Yeah, but who was the one who won in the end, hm?”
Yoongi playfully stuck his tongue out at you.
“Only cause I let you,” he claimed.
“Yeah right. I beat you fair and square. You shoulda seen your face when I pinned you to the floor.”
Yoongi turned to Namjoon. “See? She was trying to be a sexy cop.”
Namjoon laughed at the bickering between his partners. He shook his head in amusement.
“Cute.”
Hoseok pat your arm once he finished wrapping the bandage around your wound. You winced slightly, causing him to chuckle out an apology before excusing himself out of the room to put the first aid box back where it belonged.
You walked around the house aimlessly, trying to find something to do that your boyfriends would approve of. Repeatedly, they told you that you shouldn’t do anything as your arm tries to heal despite you telling them constantly that you were fine.
Currently, Namjoon, Taehyung, Jungkook, and Hoseok were headed towards the city in need of more supplies. You had protested slightly. You were still very well stocked on most things around the house, food included. Though, they insisted that they needed to find a couple of things that they knew you might run low on soon enough. Namjoon had mentioned Seokjin’s passing talk of needs for the garden and more nails and screws for Yoongi to use for repairs. So you let them go.
As you walked past the door to the backyard, Seokjin’s figure caught your attention. You decided to join him out in the garden. He looked up from watering a few of the plants after catching a glimpse of another person.
“Oh, hey Y/N,” Seokjin greeted happily.
You waved and sent him a smile. He returned to water the small sprouts, as you gazed around the rest of the bed. You had noticed a couple of weeds that needed to be pulled, so you reached for the pair of gloves Seokjin haphazardly tossed onto the ground, grabbing a small shovel, too. As you bent down to take care of the plant, the back door slid open behind you.
“There you are, Y/N. Hey, wait-”
You groaned. “Come on Yoongi, I’m just trying to help out.”
“No, you know what we said. We can take care of everything. Just rest.”
Seokjin stopped in his actions again and faced Yoongi.
“Oh, come on. Look, she’s fine. I don’t see a problem with her tending to the garden. It actually helps me a little.”
Yoongi crossed his arms in front of him. He glanced at Seokjin with a look of displeasure at his comment. Clearly, Yoongi wasn’t going to put up with anything.
“No. Joon and I told her that she wasn’t to do any labor for the next week. And you don’t see the problem cause you're not her boyfriend.”
You rolled your eyes. Was he really going to kick at Seokjin for making a simple comment? You stood, not wanting to hear any more of Yoongi’s complaints.
“Hey, don’t bring him into it, he was stating his opinion. He’s right anyways. I don’t want to sit around and do nothing while everyone else picks up more of the work that I could be doing. I don’t want to be babied every time I’m injured,” you argued.
You tossed the gloves back on the ground, sending Yoongi the same displeased look he gave Seokjin. You didn’t wait to hear what Yoongi would say, turning back to head inside the house again. The door closed behind you with a soft slam. As you trudged through the house, the door opened up again as Yoongi slid through after you.
“Baby, wait,” he called out.
Jimin walked down the stairs the moment you started up them.
“Everything okay?” His eyebrows raised in concern.
“Fine.”
You didn’t give him a second look. Of course, you felt bad, not wanting to make him worried about you—or any of the boys, really—but you had one goal in your mind at the moment. To return to your bedroom. You could hear Yoongi closing in behind you as Jimin threw the same question at him. He gave him almost the same answer you did before rushing up the stairs to try to get to the bedroom as soon as possible. You hurried into the room, closing the door right behind you, shutting Yoongi out for a moment as you tried to situate yourself on the bed to face away from the door.
“Hey,” Yoongi knocked as he opened the door.
You kept quiet. Petty, you knew. After a moment of silence from you, Yoongi stepped further into the room. He closed the door behind him softly, almost as if the noise would have irritated you further. The bed dipped a little after another moment.
“Are we really that bad?”
You heard the pout he wore. The gentleness of his voice made you want to forget everything and cuddle him until our arms were numb. But, you pushed yourself to wait. There needed to have been a discussion before you could give any affection.
“Sorta. Namjoon is worse,” you mumbled.
Yoongi sighed. The bed shifted under his movement again, and you felt the heat from his hand hovering over your calf before he decided against whatever he was going to do.
“You know we don’t mean to, right?”
“Yeah, I know,” you sighed, flipping yourself onto your back. “You mean well. I can see that. It’s just- When it happens every single time I get even just a scratch, you guys coddle me like I’m something fragile.”
Though Yoongi had moved to face your body a little more, his gaze focused elsewhere. You knew he was never one to maintain eye contact for so long, especially in situations like that, but your heart hurt at the sight of him still keeping his distance slightly. You played with your fingers as you waited for him to speak up again.
“I guess I didn’t realize,” Yoongi admitted. “I mean, besides Jungkook, I never really had cared for someone so much. And now, where it’s literally the end of the world, I just don’t want to lose the people that mean the most to me. So I guess I can’t help it whenever I see you, Namjoon, Jungkook, hell, even the others, injured—even just a scratch. I get a little over protective.”
You sat up as he spoke. Yoongi didn’t open up often about himself, but when he did, you couldn’t help feel empathetic. You knew how he felt. Of course, not in the exact context he mentioned, but you were able to find something to relate to yourself in his thoughts. The bed creaked slightly as you moved closer to him. His back was still mostly faced towards you, so you reached out to give him a back hug. You wrapped a leg around him gently, holding him in your embrace. Yoongi melted into you.
“Hey, it’s okay to be protective of those you love. It’s normal. Just- please- find the limits,” you whispered in his ear.
Yoongi’s hand found comfort as he rested it on your thigh. His thumb traced circles onto your clothed skin, and he turned his face towards yours. With his free hand, he wove his fingers into the hair at the base of your neck before pulling you closer to him. Your noses touched and he stared into your eyes as he whispered a simple ‘I will’. He leaned forward another inch to close the distance between your mouths. The kiss was soft. Neither one of you dared to do anything other than pressing your lips against the other’s , and that was enough for you. Yoongi smiled into the kiss, pulling away after a moment, just enough to brush his lips against yours as he spoke quietly.
“Mm… Do you wanna help me fix the door?”
A/N: Hello, hello! Hope you like today’s chapter! If you couldn’t tell, I was slightly in my feels for quite a bit of it. I’m not sure why haha. Either way, I am actually pretty proud of how this one turned out!
So we only have 2 more chapters left! (Chapter 20, and an Epilogue) It’s kinda sad how fast this story is coming to an end. But that just means I will start writing another one! If you have any suggestions as to what y’all would like to see from me next, let me know!
As always, I hope you liked this chapter! Let me know what you think of it. I don’t mind critiques!
See ya next time!

i watch a lot of avatar the last bender and i gonna ask the question. which of the a class is a bender (water, earth, fire, and air) or a non bender? who do you think would be the avatar?
given that she has an atla url, you can imagine es was very excited to answer this question LOL. we decided we’d approach this from like the standpoint of if bending existed, but in the current setting and world as we know it (so not quite fixed in the atla world or lore). i made visual aids to go with it because i’m a visual person, but i’ll talk a bit through our thinking for each type!
water felt so obvious for riley she was one of the first people we decided on. she definitely has that katara-like energy for a waterbender where she’s gentle and practiced and quite fluid with her motions and her emotions, but she’ll also flip on a dime in an instant and kick your ass with water if you hurt anyone she cares about (which brings us to a necessary thought -- missy vs riley epic bending battle like katara v azula energy? would love to see it). for chai, we decided she would be water because it’s interesting to have a diva type who falls in a category that is represented by folks who aren’t at all divas, so it just adds an interesting variety to things. she’s also the direct opposite to maya as a rival in that sense (who we’ll come back to).
for charlie, both he and zay we thought a lot about how the movements of bending could be tied to dance and where their strengths lie. esther said that the fluid movement of water bending reminded her a lot of ballet / lyrical, and that made sense to me. it also ties together the similarities between riley and charlie in terms of their personalities, but i think where they differ is charlie would be someone who struggles a lot with his bending. i think you have to have a big sense of inner self and balance to bend proficiently, and as we know, charlie never feels on balance. i think he’d be victim to more overwhelming moments of bending when his emotions feel out of control, and for that reason he’d try really hard to avoid using it whenever possible. esther also pointed out the cool idea of he inherited a bit of this as well -- if the gardners are all water benders, but eleanor is very strict about them only using it for healing properties and Nothing Else, that kind of belief can constrict charlie’s ability as well and contribute to his fears. and perhaps the reason bridgette was exiled also has to do with her wanting to explore bending in a more well-rounded sense, so then she could be a mentor to charlie later... truly much to think about.
(also, again, i say... can we imagine the epic bending battle that could exist between brandon, charlie, and zay? charlie who is always underestimated and brushed aside and doesnt feel in control of his own power stepping up when zay starts to lose the upper hand in a bending face off and thus charlie comes into his own and jumps into to take on brandon too and its like yeah YOU THOUGHT HE WASN’T GONNA DO NOTHING. BUT THEN LOOK AT HIM GO. LOOK AT CHARLIE AND ZAY TAG TEAM. EXACTLy).
continuing under a read more because there’s evidently lots to say!
earth happened to be a crowded category for us though why i don’t know. i jokingly said that dave would be like the boulder but also he like... is basically a human brick, so it makes sense he’d have some earth roots. but i think dave uses his bending in a more silly / lowkey way, and has no ambitions to try and master it. he also is part of the quartet of bending in the techie boys that makes up the full element list (dave, nate, dylan, and jeff), which is kinda cool. zay we went with earth for because unlike charlie, the most key trait to his dance (and bending) is how firmly rooted and grounded he is -- he has faith in his own abilities, he’s balanced, one could even say he’s stubborn in how he sticks his ground. but this parallels well to dance as well where you need to have faith in even footing and knowing you’re going to land the right way and in the right position. esther also suggested that he would be one of the few who can lava bend, which kind of makes him this interesting near-intersection of earth and fire which i thought was super cool.
for isadora, we agreed she would be of the metal bending camp (and perhaps, in this world, is even the innovator of it) and is always trying to experiment with her earth-bending. we know she’s stubborn as hell and very firmly planted in her stances and opinions, but i think where she trips up is in the moments where she does feel unsure or kind of loses her footing (like with val or knowing how she wants to be perceived over s2), her bending no longer comes naturally and she almost loses it in those moments. so like over s3, in theory, as she’s grappling with grief you’d see her have to struggle to even get the basic bending capability back in decent shape as she’s also recovering emotionally. then for eric and harper, both of them to me have very stable, grounded energies, and i think they act acutely as mentors to isa and zay respectively.
most of these feel obvious, but maya is probably the most self-explanatory bender you can get here. she is like azula in a nutshell in terms of being showy, hot-headed, calculating, arrogant, etc... though she admittedly has more heart than azula. which is saying something. we thought of maya and asher as honestly sort of antithetical to one another, as asher on the flip side is terrified of his bending ability and thusly is almost a non-bender in that he never uses it. it flares up sometimes when his anxiety gets bad and so he freaks and tries to stifle it (almost like elsa with ice but. reverse lmao), and i also think there’s something really cool in the way of like... how breath is tied to bending (especially fire) but also tied to calming panic so there’s... something there. a thread to pull at. but essentially its kind of like zuko v azula where like if asher believed in himself and stepped up to his full potential he could 100% take on maya, but it’s his own insecurity, fear, and self-doubt that holds him back and keeps him all wrapped up. also, yindra v maya fiery bend-off when?
all four of these kiddos have air bender energy to me, but in different ways and for different reasons that i can’t even necessarily articulate. haley i think is very dreamy and somewhat flighty and so wouldn’t be very good with her bending abilities. yogi just has the like... air trickster energy. then you have nigel and dylan, who are kind of like polar opposite air benders. dylan is definitely in the class of aang where it’s like silly tricks, aid in helping him leap and flip and soar around, constantly showing off that marble party trick, goofing off with the other techie boyz and trying to teach them how to do air games, etc. it’s to the point where jade (a non-bender) is like air benders must be the most annoying type on earth do they ever RELAX? impossible to work with... and then she meets nigel, also an air bender, who is like the antithesis to that in that he’s calm, thoughtful, peace-making, almost overly cautious (in that same way aang is where indecision can be your greatest enemy) and jade is like... now that. that’s what i’m talking about.
back around to dylan, though, this brings us to our assertion that dylan would be the avatar. this is something we actually mused on ages ago together when doing atla rewatch (for maggie) / watches (for es), and he just has the perfect energy for it. he’s someone who brings people together, he’s a unifier and peacemaker, he has so much intrinsic hope and optimism... but he also can be too silly and naive and would have struggles here and there trying to learn different elements (both focus wise and generally). but he basically has a team avatar built in his usual core group, with riley (water), isa (earth), and asher (fire), not to mention his techie buddies who add to that.
i was also very excited about the thematic element of dylan being air and asher being fire, because what does fire need to survive? air. yeah, it’s poecy.
and there’s something interesting there too of like... you know, the reason aang didn’t want to learn fire bending anymore was after he accidentally burned katara, and i think that sort of thing is what asher is most afraid of -- especially if dylan eventually comes to him and claims he would be the perfect teacher to teach him fire bending which will be the hardest element for him to master. it’s like, if you’re already scared of your own ability to cause damage, how do you possibly risk that even slightly to try and pass it onto your most treasured loved one? you know? there’s just so much interesting fodder there.
anyone who has known me for a while should find lucas being a non-bender exactly 0% surprising. when it comes to magical or mystical concepts like this i nearly always give lucas the normie everyman role, because i feel like it is just so quintessential to his essence. even in aaa, actually, he kind of represents this role being the “untalented,” average person stuck at the performing arts school with people who are supremely talented. so you see the blueprint. he kind of makes up the sokka angle of the dylan-team-avatar arrangement, and he also falls under the guidance of jack who is a non-bender in the vein of that expert swordsman that sokka trains under. they have that kind of dynamic and energy to me (which brings us to our third point: jack v yancy epic battle with swords when?) i think there’s also something interesting to lucas and asher’s friendship if part of the reason they’re close is because asher stifles his own abilities so much to basically be on the same playing field as lucas, which makes him feel less alone... so how does that change if he does start exploring his bending in the effort to help dylan... much to think about.
jade, as previously mentioned, is just a very Tired non-bender being surrounded by her loud bender boys. darby and sarah, as non-benders, reinforce their theoretical subordination to the likes of maya and chai (though i support darby fighting back if she could just wile up the courage...) then we have farkle, who is in a very interesting place as a non-bender trying to elbow his way to the front of the pack amongst the likes of maya and zay. i think this inferiority complex would contribute to... you know, everything about him (especially s1) and would be exacerbated even further by the idea of him REALLY being the black sheep of his family if he’s the only non-bender in a family full of practiced and prestigious fire benders. we also felt like farkle would definitely be someone who dabbles and experiments in technology around bending, trying to replicate the thing he just doesn’t have.
