Making the Most of it

Lately I've been obsessed with checking the weather forecast, keeping an eye out for warm days followed by cold nights with clear skies.  Those are the conditions that will present mist which is exactly what I've been hoping for at Corfe Castle.

Ok so the shot of the castle engulfed in mist is a bit of a cliche but I don't let that bother me, it's my photography and I'll shoot whatever I feel passionate about.  I've been there 3 times over the lat week!  I don't return there many times because it's a comfortable location for me that I know well.  I keep returning because I'm determined to get 'that shot', and I'll keep going back until it's in the bag.  Incidentally, the photo for this article was shot last Friday, the video and the photo in it was shot on Monday!

So the alarm bell rings at 4am.  I've gotten pretty good at just getting up, grabbing my bag and getting out of the door so that I cause minimal disturbance to Tara and I can let her sleep.  The road leading up to Corfe was extremely misty but I've learnt (on my numerous journeys there) that this doesn't mean anything.  Sure enough, I arrived at Corfe with full visibility of the castle.

Walking up West Hill I could see a lot of mist to the North and South but the winds just weren't blowing in the right direction for me.  It was still fantastic being outside in the open air first thing in the morning when all I can hear is the cockerel crowing on a nearby farm as dawn breaks.  I made sure I made the most of it....

PhotoGraphy Basics #1: Introduction and Exposure

If your goal is to become a Professional photographer, then there are few things that you need to take care of. Some of that includes proper equipment, how to use them and exposure.

Basic Equipment You'll Need

Well, I am pretty sure, your mind would have thought about DSLR right now and you are not wrong also. It's not always necessary to start with DSLR but its the best way if you need you can start with the simplest cameras too.

Be assured that simple cameras won't have many privileges likes the DSLR so it could be a bit difficult for you to consume them in future. So if you can afford its best to start with the former one.

Now after the basic equipment is set to let's start with the Exposure.

Exposure–the most basic element of photography

Exposure relates to the effect of lightning while clicking a photo. It seems simple enough to take a photo that is correctly exposed (has the proper brightness or darkness), but in reality, it can be quite the trick.

To have an upper hand you can take a look at the cheat sheet guide from ImprovePhotography to set the right exposure with your camera.

After setting the camera properly as per the cheat sheet now its time to move out and try clicking some images to get an idea. Most of the time newbies do a simple mistake is that they move ahead with the automatic exposure which is not always the best.

Take a look at the below image to get an idea what I am trying to say.

Left side of the image is take with Automatic exposure while the right side was taken via custom exposure. Automatic can be handy, but it also seriously limits your creative ability to make a beautiful picture.

I am sure you would have understood how to set the exposure of the camera and how to use it properly. Let's move ahead to the next articles and understand other basics.

Hi all! Today I would love to hear about how you are feeling about your own creative endeavors! Comment and tell me about how you're feeling about your own work currently. Do you feel you have any sticking points you just can't seem to get around? Personally I have often worried that while my main interest and focus when making personal images sits heavily on the creation of interesting lighting, I may not be doing enough with the concepts. I sometimes fear that while allowing myself to be creative in one aspect of my work, I am completely ignoring another very important aspect. I don't necessarily want to always be a conceptual shooter, but I worry I'm not doing enough to flesh things out on that side of it. I absolutely adore this dramatic portrait of @nxt_model @kirstenlee.price it is largely successful in my mind due to the posing mixed with the precisely placed lights. My camera's ISO and shutter speed were determined to match up with the speed of film I was shooting and the max sync speed of my film camera. This setup was one I was shooting as a rehearsal for the @improvephotography retreat, during which I will be teaching a few segments on lighting to create drama. The pose was developed entirely by the talented model @kirstenlee.price having given her some basic direction of the mood and look I wanted to create along with the direction I was wanting her to play towards. One of the greatest benefits you achieve by working with skilled models is that they contribute heavily to the creation of the image. In this instance, since it was for personal work, I was thrilled to allow her to practice her art as she saw fit to create the final images as a collaboration, and not just force my singular vision upon the final image.
