Project #4:IDENTITY ZINE- Putting it All Together
At first i was really nervous about putting together a zine but then i actually started to enjoy it. from taking this course it has helped me realize what i do and dont like. At the beginning of this class i was all about color but now im realizing that i love black & white prints and film. So i decided to play with both.
The beach is a very colorful and beautiful place so i didnt think having it in all black and white would do it any justice. I think i did well with combing color with black and white. I also like geometrical shapes so i incorporated that as well.
What were your favorite & least favorite projects & why?
My least favorite part was getting started. i have a hard time putting together what i see in my head to the computer screen. After i got a hang of it i started to enjoy it. My favorite part was designing the layout and adding the shapes because once you do that you start to see your zine come to life.
Which project(s) were most successful & why?
I think my music was pretty successful because i was really impressed with myself with how well it came out. i had a lot of frustration with that project but in the end it all pulled together for a really cool video.
What did you learn about digital art this semester?
I learned that i dont hate it as much as i think i do and that i can use these programs for my own personal projects as well. I like to put up a flight but once i start to see my work come together i get excited about it.
What more would you like to learn about digital art?
I would like to become efficient in these adobe programs because they have a lot to offer.
How has working with a computer as your medium enhanced your creative practice?
It has enhanced my creative process because i realize that i can push my work even further with these programs, that it doesn't just stop at the paper or canvas.
How does your final book relate to digital art & what does your overall design say about you?
It relates to digital art because i really went into these photos and edited them and tried to throw even more of me into them since they are all my photos to begin with. I think the overall design says that im not scared to play with color and i think it shows off my design preference.
How does the overall book design relate to the design of your online tumblr portfolio?
It relates because my portfolio was inspired by the beach and sunrises as well and you see that in my zine. Also i play with shapes in my book and for my portfolio i also played with shapes.
How do they accentuate each other?
I would say the use of lines really accentuate each other.
What grade do you expect on your final project & why?
I expect to get at least a B, i would like an A but i dont know if other people will like it or not like the way i do.
What grade do you expect in this course & why?
I was aiming for at least a B, but if i do well on this i will probably end up with a C+

Reading #5: THE SERIOUS RELATIONSHIP OF ART AND TECHNOLOGY
(Electronic Superhighway: Nan June Paik)
THE SERIOUS RELATIONSHIP OF ART AND TECHNOLOGY
By Ksenija Pantelić & Andreja Velimirović
This article talks about how technology and art keep pushing and expanding our minds on what we thought we knew about digital art.
This article talks a lot about how the internet is altering the art scene. It allows anyone to display their work and to put themselves out there. Technology in art challenges our perceptions and that is what creativity and science are all about. It also has impacted the art market. Some people argue that the internet has impacted the art scene in a negative way that it disrupts the authenticity of the connection between you and the art.
Another point it made was how technology has offered untouched grounds to explore for artists to discover something completely their own giving opportunities to push boundaries.
Examples they gave of just how technology has effected art.
Computer Drawings and Paintings
Charles Csuri – Random War, 2011
Combining Tradition and Modern
Michael Manning – Untitled piece. 2013
Technology and Performance art
Chris Milk – Treachery of Sanctuary, 2012.
Photography and Film
(Ben Tricklebank – Untitled #4 (Light Echoe Print Series), 2014.)
Manipulating Sound
(John Wynne – Installation for 300 speakers, Pianola and vacuum cleaner , 2009.)
I selected this reading because i thought it was important to point out ways the internet has gave room for us to push boundaries in our art. This reading made me remember how art and technology really do go hand in hand and share a creative bond.
It has changed my perspective in way of just remembering to acknowledge the creative outputs that the internet has opened up for us and that there is so much room for us to create and grounds for us to push ourselves even farther.

Assignment #5: Show Me What You Know
Favorite Place
My favorite place to be is New York City. This place is truly amazing and it is where i wish to end up at in my career.
Favorite Person
My favorite person right now would definitely be Dave Chappelle. I watched his recent standup on Netflix and it reminded me of why we love him. I feel like in these times especially, comedians are really needed. With all the crazy political stuff that is going on its good to laugh at it and that’s exactly what he does.
Favorite thing
My favorite thing is pizza! I don”t think i have to describe how delicious it is because mostly everyone loves it as well.
What i learned
This semester i learned how to use these adobe programs. i had never used them before but now i will and im happy about that. My favorite thing to learn was how to make a GIF and also how to cut out images to create your own, like i did here.
I chose this picture of Dave because his expression describes how i feel when i hear political news. I chose central park because the colors change through out the year and i think thats beautiful.
The photos i chose work together because of the use of color in them. Daves face definitely emphasizes how i could use a slice of pizza right now.

Reading #4: Beyond Pong: why digital art matters by James Bridle
Beyond Pong: why digital art matters
"How do we create things together in a shared environment, where we can't always trust each other, but we need to act together regardless?"
That statement stood out to me the most because he made me start thinking because in the modern digital world, the question of participation is crucial as our various networks – social, media, national – require us to constantly mediate between acting as individuals and acting as a group.
It starts to make us work together instead of against each other.
We are definitely going through a digital revolution but were still trying to understand how to make people realize the importance of it and that it is a form of art.

I actually really enjoyed this program.
The brochure was more exciting to create because i got to add my own photos on it.
InDesign is definitely helpful for marketing your work or putting something together that your initially going to print. it is a great resource that i am glad i learned.

Cangshu Gran
-Cactus Desert, 2017, oil on canvas
Florencia Soto
-Raccoon Eyes on Turquoise, 2017, oil on wood panel
Annual Juried Student Exhibition at the Ritter Art Gallery
I decided to go see this years Juried student exhibition because i have never been and i wanted too see what other students like me were making.
I was really impressed at what i saw and it gave me some motivation in joining in on exhibitions like these in the future.
When i first Cangshu Gran’s Cactus Desert, i was blown away. It had a beautiful light airbrush look to it that really stopped me at first. I love the colors and the expressions on the doll-like faces. I also actually really love cactus’s as well so i thought that was a nice touch.
Florencia Soto’s Raccoon Eyes on Turquoise is absolutely stunning. its so mysterious and i think i stood there for a few minutes and actually wanted to know more about this piece.
I also really loved how she framed the piece as well, i thought it was a creative touch.
Since i was drawn to these works i feel like they would certainly relate to my own. I related to the colors from Canshu and the mystery from Florencia.
What i learned from attending this event is that i really do need to get out their and participate.
Overall i really enjoyed this exhibition and i was glad i went. I thought these students did a very well job and it definitely motivated me to submit work for next year. :)

Project #3: MUSIC VIDEO = Story + Image + Sound
vimeo
The Beatles: She came in through the Bathroom Window
There are a few things that come to mind when i hear The Beatles, but one of them is New York. I have a fascination with that place.
I’m also obsessed with black and white film, even though its stripped of color, for me it adds so much character and mystery. It gives a sort of romance feeling to it.
So I decided to take those two things and go from there.
As i listened to the song over and over i saw myself in a way. I throw myself into risks and situations with out thinking twice and so i think this video pulls that off because in a way shes lost but content because she knows that is where she belongs.
I really enjoyed this project, I learned a lot. For an example, i never knew how to take clips from the internet and put them together to form something else which was really neat.

Reading #3 : Allergy to Originality by Drew Christie
“All ideas are second hand”
-Mark Twain
This reading was the most interesting so far. I never really thought about what originality really meant and if it even exists. as artist i feel we constantly try to be original but forget what it truly means.
The video starts off with the man asking the movie attendant why all the movies are sequels, prequels, and spin-offs. The attendant answers him by defining the term plagiarism which then leads to defining the word Originality.
Nothing is truly original because our ideas come from things we see, hear, and experience in general.
The attendant also made another point in which i have always known but again never thought about, “Literature comes from other literature”. Its interesting because its true.
The video ends with the man coming to an understanding of the term Originality and excitingly requests to see “Men and Black 3″.
This reading explains why we should never stop learning from other people and exploring art.

Assignment #3: Individual Research on Digital Art & Artists
Jean-François Rauzier
Avatar Trees, 2017 Hyperphotography mounted with Diasec on dibond
South Beach Babel, 2015 C-print
The reason i chose Jean-Francois is because his work stood out to me right away. i think his work is beautiful and surprising after you learn how its made.
Gigapixel photographs are generally created by snapping a large number of photos of a scene using a special robotic camera rig, and then stitching those images together afterward using special software. Jean-François Rauzier creates similarly massive images, except his “hyperphotos” are all stitched together by hand.
Ryan Whittier Hale
Debasement, 2013 Framed Inkjet Print
Untitled, 2012 3D-printed sculpture, glass bell-jar
These works are made with combinations of photography and videography, digital renderings, and video game software.
In your opinion, what is the role of digital art today?
digital technology is growing and is apart of our everyday lives so as an artist its important to grow with it. digital art is essential.
What kinds of personal connections can you make to your selected artists works?
i can make a personal connection with them because i understand there view points and i think they're styles are similar to mine which is why i chose them.
What are the subjects, issues, and themes important to each of your selected artists?
i think the theme and or issues with both artists is simply just exploring how far they can push themselves with these processes in which they create they're art.

Project #2: Digital Collage/Montage - Exploration in Multiple Media
Conceptual idea
The concept behind my piece is “Across the Universe”
I think it represents me because i am always open to learning or seeing new things. There is a whole world out there for us to get to know.
The photos in the back are places i wish to see one day and the photo in my camera lens is of New York City, somewhere i have been and want to live.
The reason i made a collage is because i felt like it personally gave me more freedom to be creative and to really pull off what i am thinking and feeling.
I feel like i pulled off balance and emphasis with the way i positioned my images.
I really enjoyed this project because i learned about about layering which is something i feel like ill use a lot in the future.
I also wanted this project to be a little more personal which is why i chose to use a photo of myself.

Digital Exercise #3: Watch & Complete Adobe Photoshop Tutorials
Editing your First Photo
The first landscape photo was created by watching Editing your first photo in Photoshop
The second photo to the right is a light i created and photographed. Photoshop really helped me capture the full effect of the light.
Creating your First Design
The Great American West was created by watching Create your first Design
The second western photo was created basically the same way but i wanted to see what the image would look like with a more gloomy sky in the background.
Adobe Photoshop
I think this is an amazing program. I never have used it before but now i will always touch up my photos with this program. I think it really helps us artist capture exactly what we want the viewer to see or feel.

Reading #2: The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction by Walter Benjamin
Two things that interested me in this reading was how he talked about Reproduction and Authenticity.
He explained how art has always been reproducible. It was interesting reading about the history of reproducing something. There is a difference between imitating something and mechanical reproduction, it is producing something new.
What i got from this reading was how art can always be replicated, but through out history it changes by us evolving and learning new techniques and discovering new mediums.
Although you can replicate an art work it lacks one thing, Authenticity, where it was made at that point and time in history. Its as if nothing can be reproduced exactly like its original structure.
The aura of the art also gives it authenticity.
“The unique value of the “authentic” work of art has its basis in ritual, the location of its original use value.” (IV)
I found this reading to be very interesting, especially the way he explained how authenticity plays a huge part in replicating. I never thought about these two points in those ways.

Assignment #2: Individual Research on Contemporary Art & Artists.
Nan Goldin “Misty in Sheridan Square” (1980) Photograph
Nan Goldin “Misty and Jimmy” (1980) Photograph
I decided to chose Nan Goldin as one of the two artist to talk about because her work is in my opinion amazing.
Nan highlights the lives of socially marginalized groups. Her photographs really captures the moods of her subjects.
I selected these works because of how she captured “Misty” it just has so much attitude to it that i really admire.
I definitely think her work relates to digital art because you can get a lot of inspiration from it.
Beatriz Milhazes “O Elefante Azul” (2002) Painting
Beatriz Milhazes “Figo” (2006) Painting
I chose this artist because her work is beautiful and colorful and it grabbed my attention as soon as i saw it.
She gets her inspiration from the decorative arts, fashion, and geometry.
I definitely think this relates to digital art because her work is something that you can really get inspiration from especially all the patterns and color she uses.
a) In your opinion, what is the role of contemporary art today?
I think it plays a role in how we paint and view or surroundings during that point and time in history.
b) What kinds of personal connections can you make to your selected artists works?
Well i really connected with them because i saw a little of me in them. I love capturing people in my photographs and i love using vibrant colors in my works so i can relate to both of them in that sense.
c) What are the subjects, issues, and themes important to each of your selected artists?
The subject for Nans work focuses a lot around the LGBT community. Beatriz’s theme has a heavy influence of Brazilian culture.

Project #1: Create your own Logo/Avatar & Header (to design & personalize your ONLINE PORTFOLIO) = The Art of Visual Identity
Header
Logo/Avatar
Screenshot of my online tumblr portfolio
These designs represent me because i love color and shapes therefore i think i represented that well with this project.
What elements of art & principles of design have you incorporated in your overall design?
I definitely used color and pattern. I wanted the colors to give off a light and airy feeling similar to what a beach would give you.
I also think i used a lot of harmony. The circles and lines compliment each other as well as the colors in my opinion.
How will your newly customized online portfolio work with what you will be creating in Digital Art to further express your individuality?
I think it is a good start and definitely the direction i want to be on. It will help me express my creativity in future work for sure.
