How did the fandom allow 'sympathetic' and 'unsympathetic' tags to even happen. Like I suppose the dark sides do come across as scary in their initial appearances, I know Janus got me good pretending to be Patton but... They were both very clearly hurting and hidden parts of Thomas who had been stifled and locked away for a while. Their methods are flashy but both Remus and Janus believe they're benefiting Thomas.
As a DID system, it reminds me of the system role persecutor-protector - the dark sides believe what they're doing will benefit Thomas, whether Deceit through lies or The Duke through extreme honesty or Anxiety by being too scary to ignore, but the ways that they protect Thomas cause him distress and/or fear. Janus was unveiled to be self-preservation as much as he is dishonesty, implying that Thomas learned to lie early on as part of his survival. And Remus, while we don't know much about him yet, is repressed imagination and religious trauma as much as he is intrusive thoughts. He has ideas and thoughts about Thomas's content that are very valid, as far as the slight babying of his audience and unwillingness to confront the dark parts of himself. They have good traits that are genuinely helpful, but their aggressive ways of attempting to help and express themselves are instead making the "good" parts of Thomas feel like he's a bad person.
Calling them unsympathetic feels so counterproductive to the story and the lessons being taught. You're doing exactly what the light sides do to them by declaring them too scary to look at, and worthy of being repressed and shunned. I feel like this won't ever be understood by the fanbase until the other dark sides get an equivalent of 'Accepting Anxiety'. But that shouldn't have to happen. It's a total lack of sympathy to look at the survival mechanisms and intrusive thoughts of a mentally ill character and declare them 'unsympathetic' as though they're cartoon villains. It may be fiction, but the thoughts and opinions you express about those parts of Thomas are heard and internalized by people like me, who are sick in the same ways as character!Thomas. OCD is a blight on my life, but the portrayal of methods to work through your intrusive thoughts and the reassurances Logan gave to let Thomas know that he is not a bad person for having them? That meant so much to me. Remus means so much to me. Seeing people turn around and do exactly what Patton, Virgil, and Roman do to them, labeling them as "wrong" somehow and pushing them to a place you don't have to see them, it hurts. It has real world effects on how people talk about people like me with 'dark' parts of themself.
Every part of Thomas has the ability to be both bad and good, because Thomas is not perfect. No one is perfect, and someone appearing dark or aggressive in their self expression doesn't always make them unworthy of empathy or understanding. Those parts of Thomas never deserved to be deemed as 'wrong' in the first place, and the story is about unpacking that thinking, slowly and painfully as it may go.

an oral history of how sanders sides fandom worked
> be me > average sanders sides fan circa 2018 > new sinister character named 'deceit' is introduced > don't know fuck all about him except that he's implied to have a history with fandom darling virgil > he doesn't show up again for another two years > "his addition still only brings the cast total up to five... and he has bad blood with my poor bby virgil... FINALLY A CHARACTER I CAN WRITE AS THE UNAMBIGUOUS EVIL VILLAIN IN MY VIRGIL ANGSTFICS!" > Two Years of this, shit ramps up > deceitful manipulator characterisation (plausible extrapolation) is warped into a perpetuator of whatever violent assault or abuse there needed to be a victim of (nonsensical casting that happens when you only have one Villain to work with) > after those two years he shows up again > PLOT TWIST! turns out he is just like a guy who is philosophically opposed to the main team and has greyer methods but ultimately good goals > "actually hes making points..." > he gets fans who dont want to write him as a meaningless abuser and instead as > you know > a character > his ao3 tag is so clogged with shitfic that the 'sympathetic deceit sanders' tag is created to denote fics written by his fans > mass PSAs go around reminding people to tag posts containing deceit because (checks notes) the fandom worked themselves into such a fervor over him that even seeing him being treated as less than the devil incarnate (you know, as canon does) makes people lose their shit > in the same episode, another main character did some dodgy shit and (the sanders sides fandom having the critical thinking skills of a walnut) started pasting Him in as the Evil Abuser archetype > 'unsympathetic patton sanders' tag is created for that, with variations made for occassions on which other main characters are shifted into the abuser role > episode or two later, a character on the same side as deceit is introduced and he is Very controversial > i woke up and found out that there was a new character because the first post on my dash said 'remember to tag any posts featuring this new guy as 'dukedontlook' so people can filter him out like they do with deceit!' > more episodes release > it is incredibly obvious that the writers are going 'hey dont do that unsympathetic sides shit, they are all just characters working towards the same goal' as they write deceit and the new guy being accepted into the fold > fandom clings to the sympathy labels with their teeth
mfw i checked ao3 today and there are still fics being uploaded tagged by the metric of 'is this character Some Guy or Evil Incarnate'
if theres one thing i have to thank the sanders sides fandom for its that its made me immune to reading stories where a character is made into the Bad Villain for fucks of it. 'an: ahhhh i dont hate this character but i need him to be abusive so that the story works (and i can woobie my blorbo) >_<' bro just tag unsympathetic!bruce wayne and be done with it
#the sanders sides fandom was everything u think it was#like at this point i see a fic tagged anything like 'bad parent X' and go oh LOLLLLL unsympathetic sides... not clicking that#like a badge of 'this isnt a character i care to actually write about'#'this is a narrative role that needs to be filled so Y can be hurt so i made X into the villain'#and even back in sanders sides... man u had to tag for Everything#like there was a semi-popular tag that went like 'morally ambigious deceit' or summat#because you had to tag how you wrote him. you Had To#because even if you werent writing him as Evil or Good Guy you had to tag that ambigiuity#i dont know that i ever saw someone straight up getting hate for not tagging sympathy labels#but they were so widespread that the pressure was for sure there#and 'sympathy' as well is a really telling label for it too#bcos they could have picked 'good!deceit' or 'allied!deceit' or something idk#but instead they went for Sympathetic. because prior to that he wasnt a Character to be treated with any sort of sympathy#u werent meant to look at him and see a guy to analyse. u were meant to see an evil villain (in fandoms eyes)#so 'sympathetic deceit' could functionally mean 'takes the same actions as villain deceit but hes sad about it'#which means that it doesnt even tell u if the fic is apologism or stanning or whatever u wanna call it#it literally was just 'DO YOU THINK THIS CHARACTER HAS EMOTIONS? DOUBTFUL. TRIGGER TAG IT PLEASE'#^^^^ can you tell i was a deceit kinnie LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL#i was out there in the trenches every day making my little posts about how he was so cool and morally ambigious#this snake man written by thomas sanders

The Fairest of Them All
How about a one shot where Roman is genderfluid?
May or may not have elements slightly based off of personal experience, who knows? I mention this because in case my mind does decide to subtly do that, I want everyone to know that everyone else’s experiences are different. The way I might describe being genderfluid may not be the way someone else would describe it.
Just wanted to put that out there.
Also I was writing this before the new video, don’t worry I have ideas for fics to come from that.
Enjoy, everyone!
~~ Fandom: Oh, who are we kidding, we all know its Sanders Sides
Type: One-shot, AU
Summary: Roman is dating Logan, Patton, and Virgil before they find out that Roman is genderfluid. But they are, and they are really scared that their boyfriends will break up with them if they ever came out.
Characters: Roman Sanders, Logan Sanders, Patton Sanders, Virgil Sanders, Remy Sanders, slight mention of Deceit
Pairings: LAMP/CALM/Polysanders
Warnings: some negative thoughts, Deceit, slight homophobia
~~
Roman had a problem that he had hidden from his boyfriends for the entirety of their lives. Well, most of their lives.
He had realized that he was genderfluid when he was 16, figuring out that only sometimes he was a boy. Other times, he was actually a she, and other times he felt more like he was nonbinary.
The problem with realizing that when he was 16 was that people weren’t so nice to gays. And he was not only gay, but genderfluid?
It felt like the Universe itself hated him, and it made his life that much harder. He lied to himself, getting to know a certain fellow Side of Thomas much more than he would have liked.
He wasn’t good enough, not masculine enough, not feminine enough. He was never enough, and these thoughts took their toll on him.
Even after being more accepted as gay, even after getting to know so many amazing people who were genderqueer like him, it hurt. He still felt like he could never tell anybody.
The good news was that as soon as he felt that he was more accepted, especially about liking boys, he was able to stop lying to himself. He was able to get rid of Deceit. Well, it was him and Remy, but... Roman didn’t like to think about that particular incident too much. The point was that it was okay to be who he is, at least mostly.
He still hadn’t told the other main Sides. He wasn’t even sure why. Mostly, he figured, it was a reaction to having been told that it was wrong to be himself for most of his life. But that doesn’t matter. It was the fact that he, Logan, Patton, and VIrgil had all started dating. Roman couldn’t help but wonder just how much longer he could keep his secret.
That’s why he was more scared when he woke up this morning. He was tucked in between a warm Virgil and a cold Logan, with a really hot Patton right below him. He smiled at his three loves, but grimaced when he realized that he felt more like a she today.
She quickly climbed away from her boyfriends (an impressive feat with the way Logan cuddles her), giggling softly.
She tripped over some of her clothes, blushing as she yelped out an “oh shit!”
She turned to get dressed, at least in a robe, but thought she saw some movement out of the corner of her eye. She got scared, looked over at the three of them, but saw no movement from any of them. Satisfied, she smiled at them softly, glad they were still asleep as she slipped into the wardrobe that led to her realm.
When she got inside, leaving a crack in the wardrobe door (she had read about Narnia, obviously), she smiled. Her figure was no longer that of her more Princely self - tall and buff and masculine. No, now she was smaller and feminine, and she fucking loved it.
No one could mistake her for a Prince now, because she’s currently a Princess.
As she was choosing her gown for the day (because a Princess has got to slay), a letter came under her door. She opened it, and let out a squeal of delight. There was to be ball tonight, and apparently a few handsome Princes wanted to dance with her!
She knew she had her boyfriends, of course, but she also knew that this was a kingdom she had made up so everyone automatically knew that she was taken.
She looked outside, noting that it was actually afternoon, and slipped into a gown for that evening and did up her makeup. She looked gorgeous, and honestly couldn’t wait for the ball!
Logan was woken up by his creative boyfriend slipping out of the bed that everyone is. He would have ignored it, honestly, if it weren’t for a sudden “oh shit!” coming from Roman.
Logan felt the other two wake up - their Prince had been rather loud with his swearing - but the three of them pretended to still be asleep.
They could all feel Roman’s eyes looking at them, and Virgil could tell that his royal boyfriend was anxious as he looked over them. Eventually, he left to his realm, and the three still in the bed sat up.
“Virgil, something was off with Ro.” Virgil nodded, noting that Patton had simply said, not asked.
“Yeah,” the anxious side cleared his throat. “He was anxious about something, and it’s to do with us. Or, more likely, with something we don’t know.”
Logan nodded. “That is the most logical conclusion based on the evidence thus far. Now here’s the question: are we following him?”
The other two nodded, each of them getting dressed before following their beloved.
They walked into a lush red and gold room, not unlike the one they had just left. In the center, they saw Roman.
Patton was about to walk forwards when Logan stopped him, pointing out that something was happening.
They watched as their Roman transformed into a girl, mouths hung open. She giggled happily, twirling around. They all ducked behind pillars, watching their boy- no, girlfriend- be happier than they had ever seen. She quickly went into her closet on the other side of the room, and they saw that there were a bunch of Roman’s traditional outfit on one side of it.
On the other side, where Ro was currently looking for an outfit, was a splendid, rainbow array of fancy and casual Princess gowns.
The other three left the room slowly, running into someone they recognized.
“Hey, Remy!” The other Side, Sleep, turned around.
The Starbucks loving Side smiled. “Hey, guys, whatcha here for?”
They quickly explained everything that had been happening in the last half-hour, Remy’s look quickly changing from carefree to serious as he pulled them from the corridor to the otherwise empty library.
“What is going on, Remy?” Virgil asked, worried for the people he loves.
“I knew Ro hadn’t told you yet, and I’m sworn to secrecy as his Royal Advisor, but you’ve seen it for yourselves now.” Remy muttered, more to himself than anything.
“What the hell is going on? And who made you a Royal Advisor?” Logan asked sharply, more than slightly worried about his boyfriend.
Remy stuck his tongue out. “Roman made me his Royal Advisor, dummy!”
Patton had to hold Logan back from punching Remy. Virgil sighed anxiously, making everyone in the room sigh softly and calm down a bit so as not to worry the purple-clad Side.
“Remy, what is up with Roman? He - he changed into a girl.” Patton’s tone wasn’t judgmental or anything, just curious and worried.
“So, Roman, as you think you know him, is a boy. This is true... about 50% of the time.” Remy began to explain, sighing at the other three’s confused looks.
“He’s actually genderfluid. He’s been hiding it since we were 16. Sometimes, he’s nonbinary - uses they/them. But most of the time when he’s not a he, he’s a she. That’s who she is right now - she’s not a Prince. She is a Princess.”
The others nodded, glad that their love was alright. They had been worried, when she seemed anxious around them, that something in her kingdom was hurting her. This wasn’t that, thank goodness.
“But wait, why wouldn’t he - sorry, she - tell us? And how do you know?” Patton’s eyes were filled with tears. Remy sighed.
“I honestly don’t know the answer to the first question, you’ll have to ask her that. My guess is worry that you wouldn’t accept her. As for the second question, it’s because I busted in on Deceit hurting her. She had been lying to herself about this, letting Deceit hurt her. I stopped that as soon as I found out, and have been her Royal Advisor ever since.”
They all nodded silently, each thinking different things. Logan figured that Remy’s position in the kingdom made a lot more sense now. But, there were more pressing matters than that train of thought. Virgil made plans to kick Deceit’s ass silently. Patton, however, had another idea.
“We need to show her that we love her no matter her gender. How about - oh, a Royal Ball!” Patton exclaimed excitedly.
Remy raised an eyebrow. “That would certainly be doable, and when she’s female she does love to dance and wear pretty dresses.”
“That settles it!” Patton shouted. Virgil flinched, before a sudden thought occurred to him.
“Pat, love, wait. Ro was pretty anxious this morning, and I don’t want to scare her. Is there a way to let her know we’re coming without her actually being told it’s us?” He whispered, still very concerned that Ro hadn’t trusted them with something as important as this. Not because he knew what that felt like, per se, but because he did know what it was to not want to feel like an outcast, especially because of a certain snake-faced Side.
His thoughts were interrupted when his Logical boyfriend spoke.
“Well, what if we had Remy give her an invitation? Say there would be a ball, with a few Princes interested in dancing with the Princess? I mean, we always knew Ro loved balls, and that when we thought she was a he we said we didn’t mind him dancing with other Princes. She would likely think of this as the same type of thing, only we would be the ones to dance with her.”
Remy smirked. “Ro always said that if you ever visited, you were each to be ‘treated like the Princes they are.’ Her words, not mine.”
Patton and Virgil nodded along, smiling at the memory of Roman asking if (then a) he could dance with Princes, if they would mind too much. She always was worried about what they thought of her.
They and Logan laughed slightly at Remy’s words before they all went their separate ways.
This would be a true chance to show her that they love her, no matter what.
And so the invitation was delivered, the royals got ready, and the stage (or in this case, ballroom) was set.
How will Ro react to her boyfriends being the Princes she would dance with soon?
Ro was ready to go down to the Ball, she thought. But just to check, she twirled in front of her mirror one more time. She couldn’t help the giggle. She looked gorgeous, and couldn’t wait to dance!
She headed downstairs, and walked into the Ballroom. People parted for her, smiling, and she nodded at them. She was happy, beautiful, and ready to dance with a few handsome Princes.
Then she saw the three Princes there to dance with her. She felt her throat get tight, breathing slightly shallower. She forced herself to go along with the breathing excersise she had memorized for Virgil.
The same Virgil who was currently standing in front of her, with Logan and Patton beside him.
They were all in formal suits, and god Ro wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about how good they looked if it wasn’t for the fact that they had discovered her secret somehow.
“Ro, love, it’s okay.” Virgil spoke only when she was breathing normally, not wanting for her to hurt any more than she was already.
“S-so you d-don’t hate me? You d-don’t wanna b-break u-up with m-me?” Ro stuttered, and Logan and Patton and Virgil all felt their hearts melt when she looked up at them with gorgeous doe eyes.
Patton couldn’t help but hug her when her voice broke on the last word. “Of course not, Ro, we love you no matter what.”
Ro accepted Patton’s hug, smiling happily. Logan and Virgil hugged her too, all of them happy together.
Logan spoke softly. “Ro, may I have the honor of the first dance with the fairest Princess in all the land?” Ro giggled and curtsied, nodding.
Logan smiled, took her arm, and led her out to the dance floor. A rather fun and complex dance was going on, and everyone was impressed that Logan knew all the steps as though he had been dancing it for all his life.
Patton squealed as he and Virgil watched their boyfriend and girlfriend as they softly swayed from side to side together, barely enough to call it dancing.
Ro giggled and twirled, her red, white, and gold gown twirling around her. Logan smiled happily as he dipped her, kissing her softly before they resumed the dance.
“So, Princess, is there a different name you want to go by?” Logan murmured when the dance slowed a bit and he and his love were pressed close together.
“Yeah, actually. I tend to go by Rosana - I got a bit inspired by the Youtuber who also called herself Ro, and it’s different than my male self but it makes sense to me as still being who I am, you know?” She blushed as she couldn’t help but feel that she had rambled on for too long. Logan smiled softly.
“Alright, my lovely Princess Rosana.” He kissed her once more as the dance ended, leaving her a blushing and giggling mess.
They walked over to Patton and Virgil, who stopped swaying so that Patton could drag Ro out to the dance floor. Some uptempo swing was playing, making Pat lead Ro around the dance floor in a fast, old-fashioned dance.
The beat was one that people watching from the sidelines could clap along with, and that’s exactly what Logan and Virgil were doing. They clapped in time, smiling and laughing together and waving at Pat and Ro when the dancing couple passed them by.
Soon enough, the song was over, and a somewhat tired Patton led over a still energetic Princess that was ready to dance with her anxious boyfriend.
Virgil took Ro’s hand, leading her to the center of the room. All other people cleared the dance floor, and a familiar theme played that made Ro’s heart sing  and blush.
A Tale as Old as Time, was what they danced to. Ro and Virgil danced together, slowly, peacefully, but still magically. The turns were soft, and Ro knew that Virgil was always there for her.
Eventually, this song too ended. But more songs played.
The Princes danced the night away with their Princess, Ro never straying too far from the arms of someone she loves. She was happy to be able to be herself, and to dance with her boyfriends.
And if the Royal Advisor to Princess Rosana was currently squashing a little yellow-and-black snake under his boot for trying to crash the party, well, no one had to be the wiser.
As long as the Sides were happy together, everything was okay. And they truly were happy, together as they danced the night away.

Hey! Anyone want some heavy platonic Loceit angsty headcanons I've extracted from the new episode? Well, too bad because it's happening regardless. :)
Yes, also some Unsympathetic Patton. You know what blog you're on. (This interpretation/headcanon shall not die. Not here.)
(Also, this is going to combine my observations and thoughts as well, so sorry in advance if this post turns out as a bit of a mess.)
Alright, so! Orange Side confirmation. How we feelin', Sanders Sides fandom, how we feelin'?
Honestly, the Orange Side theory wasn't something I was really all that into. It was a 'meh, could be cool' headcanon for me personally. But I have to say the way the reveal was handled made me jump in my seat with pure joy. No joke, I audibly gasped when Logan's eyes flashed orange.
It was all downhill from there, I was excited. Anyone who knows me will tell you I'm a sucker for character's eyes glowing when they've reached their limit or are displaying a power they've never shown before, combine that with an unexpected reveal and I'm sold.
Plus, glowing eyes have been a common theme with Unsympathetic content and Dark Side headcanons so you could imagine how the first peak into the Orange Side's existence (or, rather confirmation. we all saw the 'hello' hint, Orange, you cheeky little munchkin.) was his color in Logan's eyes made me feel. It was so cool!!! Ah!
Then Thomas had to tease us again at the end card with our boy Orange's eyes popping up in the darkness, waiting for his chance to be too loud to ignore. Like, the audacity. Who do you think you are, Thomas?! (That was a joke. Sorry, I'm just really pumped.)
Also, Remus got quite a few laughs out of me. Ah, I missed him.
Okay, headcanon time! We're going to do Logan first, then Janus, then combine the two. Sound good? Alright, here we go (Trigger Warning for discussions of alcoholism, please if anything I write here sounds insensitive or inaccurate, let me know and I will edit. Also, no need to read if you don't want to. Stay safe.) :
Logan
Logan knew where to grab for that alcohol bottle.
I mean, I guess that makes sense since he lives there and is naturally the most observant Side. But...that bottle's placement was a little too convenient.
Sure it was played up as a joke and it was funny.
But something about the way Logan threw his coffee into the sink and quickly replaced it with the wine stuck out to me.
I've joked about Logan and/or Janus having to "drink to cope" due to sharing the single brain cell Thomas has amongst all the chaos. But seeing that in an actual episode, even as a gag, is kind of...different.
Let me explain.
This may be a common thing for Logan that he struggles with.
He wakes up early to be the first one to help Thomas start the day, naturally. Logan goes to make his cup of coffee and there's always the lingering urge to take a sip of wine before anyone can see because he just...can't face everyone without needing just a little bit of it to cloud out all the gross, petty, negative feelings he experiences every day around them.
He's logic. He can't be drinking and risk any more harm to Thomas's function.
So, it's a constant battle with coffee vs wine, coffee vs wine, coffee vs wine-
Most of the time Logan is able to resist and go with the coffee.
It doesn't make him feel good in the slightest. If anything it makes him feel even worse knowing he'll be more alert that day.
Logan hates that was even a thought at all. He needs to be alert. Otherwise everything will fall apart. He is the rock in the system and without him everything will crumble.
Such a selfish mindset. He needed to focus.
Other days Logan just doesn't have it in him to discard the wine regardless of how much he wants to.
He knows what the day holds for him. It was all so repetitive at this point. Logan knew when he wasn't able to get through it despite it all.
That didn't stop him from shaming himself for caving. He should be able to handle this. He's made so much progress with resisting it up to this point but today he through it away again because he just had to, right?
Sometimes Logan finds himself "cheating" by hiding a couple drops of wine into his coffee on days when he chose the coffee but later felt particularly bad about...a lot of things, into his second cup.
Logan more often times chooses neither. The temptation for clouding out the others was just too strong and was a waste of time.
Logan is beyond tired of the others.
Every single action they have agitates him now. No matter how minor it is.
Roman's loud voice and constant references makes Logan's toes unconsciously curl beneath his shoes. Even a silent warm smile and wave from the prince fills Logan with an unpleasant tingle in his knuckles.
Virgil's neverending foreboding and unnecessary nasty remarks that he doesn't even bother to filter provokes Logan's new habit of biting his tongue. Any kindness he ever gives him makes his stomach twist.
Patton's nicknames, poking for for a laugh, his "sweet" way of shoving away any objection he may have, how casually he behaves as if he isn't part of any problems- how quickly he's prepared to "bounce back". Logan feels like every word, action from him something steps on a guitar cord in the back of his mind that makes the ugliest, loud, screeching sound. He feels this strange warm fuzzy ache he can't define. All he hears is that cord playing faster and faster the longer he stays in their presence. Logan no longer trusts himself alone with Patton.
Logan thinks if he just separates from the others long enough, the ugly strumming noise will go away.
But he's so wrong.
Logan can hear it even when he's all alone. When it's finally silent, he still can't get rid of it.
It's loudest when Logan is alone in his room. Logan has lost count of how many nights he's spent clenching his head, quietly sobbing, and praying for it to just go away already.
Logan often feels like he's losing it.
On nights where the sounds are particularly louder than usual, he swears he can see orange shadows creeping around him, lights of the color flashing on and off, he sometimes even sees it seeping in and out of the cracks of his door like a thick fog. At times he'll even wake to it glowing absurdly bright through his window.
It's just the sunrise. Logan tells himself. He has to believe that. Everything else looked normal, after all.
What's worse is Logan doesn't know how long he's been hearing this sound or seeing the strange lights.
Patton knows about Logan's late night and early morning struggles.
But surprise, surprise, he pretends as if he's nonthewiser.
If either Virgil or Roman asks about Logan, Patton will answer: "Oh, that silly billy's probably got his head in one of his astronomy books again! I wouldn't bother him right now."
Knowing full well he's having an emotional breakdown in his room that gets worse every day.
Knowing about the little sneaks of alcohol in his hot morning beverage. Might even speak about yummy drink combinations when they hang out in the living room, while Logan is present, specifically and even only on the days Patton knows he's cheating with his bad habit, while he's still drinking it.
The further Logan is to the edge, the better. Patton is still bitter about the events of Redux ending in his favor, after all. He needs leverage from somewhere.
When Thomas left to see Nico, Logan heard the cord again. His chest tightened and though he could feel the tears welling up, he kept them down.
Thomas hasn't been very happy lately. He had to let him have this.
No matter how loud those cords get.
Janus
I noticed that Janus was either unseen by the others or unacknowledged by them.
Janus was near all of them but far enough that he was separated.
He could've just popped up at the end without them noticing but...that's less angsty therefore less fun so-
Janus has been the instigator for bringing Sides that have been hidden away to be brought to light for a long time. If the assumption that Janus let Remus out is true.
He's always been hinting at upcoming events that are sure to come if Thomas continues to ignore certain aspects of himself.
He knows. He knows our Orange boy is getting worse and soon will be too loud to ignore. Janus wants to protect Thomas but that's becoming harder every day. Thomas is making it harder.
Janus will reveal the Orange Side eventually. And very soon. Hell, that's looking like less and less of a choice considering Logan's...outburst.
I think Janus has this painful awareness that he can be seriously hated for doing his job. After all, he's always the one who's forced them to acknowledge uncomfortable truths about Thomas.
He's the one giving them all of those hard pills to swallow and especially after Remus, it is definitely overwhelming and exhausting to be met with.
They question their roles more and more because of how used they are to the fixed mindset Thomas has had for such a long time.
That can't feel good.
Janus knows that his job may cause more hatred to fester the more that's revealed.
Janus is being kept at arms length and he knows that won't stop any time soon.
But he's a clever snake. That won't keep him from keeping an eye on Patton.
(Find it real suspicious that Patton was all mushy with Janus in that end card but still is at a big distance from him.)
Loceit
Janus will sometimes find Logan in the common room with his head in his arms, sprawled out against the coffee table. His glasses being discarded from half his face, unmistakable tears lazily dripping out of his lifeless eyes.
Janus would wordlessly go to the sink and grab a glass, filling it with water.
Janus goes over to Logan, giving him a gentle rub on the back. He urges him to sit up. It takes Logan a few minutes but eventually does.
Janus hands Logan the water, supporting the back of his neck as struggles to get it down, reminding him to take his time.
Janus takes his glasses and gently sets them on the table. He hands Logan some tissues.
Logan lifelessly takes them and tries to clean his face. But he always ends up crying into them.
Janus moves Logan unkempt bangs from his face before moving his head to his shoulder. Janus manifests a warm blanket over Logan and uses a bit of his abilities to soothe the shorter man's pain, tenderly putting pressure on his neck.
Janus and Logan have a talk. Logan always asks why he bothers to stop and comfort him.
"You've helped me through a lot, Logan. Not returning the favor is out of the question."
That was always his answer.
Janus and Logan do this often.
Janus opens up about sometimes needing a bit of a drink himself from time to time. Though mostly that consists of tea more often than not, he sometimes has a glass of wine or two to relax on days when it's particularly hard.
He feels ashamed of it. Janus has to be the strongest out of everyone, especially the Dark Sides. Allowing things to faze him was the worst case scenario. At least, to that degree.
But Janus understands that isn't his fault and urges Logan not to blame himself, either. While he hated that weakness he occasionally submitted to, he wasn't going to let the rare slip up to define the worth of his role.
Logan thinks that Janus really is the strongest out of all of them just for saying things like that and he's being too hard on himself.
On nights when things become too much Janus will sit with Logan and share a drink. They try to have as many conversations without wine as possible but sometimes Janus says "screw it" and sits with Logan with one or two drinks.
Just having Janus there helps Logan choose his coffee in the mornings and feel as if he's being heard even a little bit.
Now if only those cords could actually quiet down, that'd be even better.

“Logan I’m fine!” Janus hissed through his gritted teeth, smacking his boyfriend’s hand away.
Logan huffed and rolled his eyes, “If you were fine, you wouldn’t be limping in every step and wincing in pain when you put down your foot! Now Janus, please let me see your ankle!” Logan reached his hand back towards Janus, only this time when Janus tried to smack him away; Logan grabbed both of his wrists in a tight grip. “There. Now sit still and let me help you.” Logan wasn’t happy about having to physically restrain his boyfriend, but Janus had been in pain all week and had refused to accept help the normal way.
Janus hissed once again when Logan pulled up his pant leg, “L-Logan please!” Janus whimpered when his boyfriend pulled his sock down slightly, “I-Its fine. I don’t need your help” Logan pulled the smaller side onto his lap, leading Janus’ hands to his tie in case the rough movements were to be painful. Janus gripped the tie tightly, breaths sharp while Logan rubbed his back in a comforting manner.
“I just want to help you, my love.” Janus breathed slow and steady, Logan chewed on his bottom lip slightly, “I’m sorry, love… this was out of line. You don’t have to tell me.” the blue side spoke softly; regret seeping into his bones as lightly combed through the others sweat covered curls. Logan pulled his pant leg back down and leaned against the wall The duo sat there for a while before Janus nodded against his chest.
“Ok..”
“Ok?” Logan questioned, eyebrow quirked up slightly
“You can check my ankle... Just.. don’t freak out?” Janus looked at him with glassy eyes, his voice was hesitant as Logan rubbed his back up and down.
Logan pecked a small kiss against Janus’ forehead, “I won’t. I promise”
Janus tensed when Logan reached down and softly tugged up his left pant leg. Logan couldn’t help it when his eyes widened.
Small emerald-like scales faded down from Janus’ calf, but that wasn’t the issue; Logan loved Janus’ scales (even if the others had differing ‘opinions’) The problem was that his ankle was purple and swollen, twisted inwards slightly. Logan picked Janus up and moved him closer to him so he could get a better view without leaving his boyfriend’s grasp. Logan reached out and touched the joint, snapping away immediately when Janus hissed and held the tie in white knuckles.
Logan breathed in deep, he promised not to freak out Janus. “Ok. let's get you to the bed.” Logan stood up slowly, grateful that Janus was the shortest of the sides to make carrying him easier
Logan walked slowly, keeping his eyes trained on the side in his arms. Even though the bed was close, it felt like a mile-long walk, and to say that Logan was concerned was an understatement. Janus told him practically everything. So for him to be so adamant that nothing was wrong was strange and unlike his boyfriend. Logan kept his steps calm and even as he met the bed, Pulling Janus away from his chest to lay him on the pillows. Logan sat next to him, the mattress sinking as the blue side looked back down at Janus’ ankle.
It was definitely twisted. And twisted badly. With thick lines of purple, green, and black surrounding the main joint, “Jan- Janus… what happened?” Logan tried not to sound shocked or breathless but was failing spectacularly as he intaked a large gulp of air.
“....” Janus stared at the ceiling.
“Janus please.” Logan grabbed Janus’ hand and stared into his glass like eyes, “was it Roman?” His expression was starting to leak with anger, how could anyone hurt his boyfriend.
Janus shook his head once more.
“Virgil?”
Janus winced slightly, but shook his head.
“Remus?”
Another shake.
“ W-was it Patton?” Logan hated the idea that the fatherly side could injure another side, but he was out of options and no one would touch his beloved.
Janus didn’t react for a minute or two. But then timidly nodded his head, breath shaky.
Logan couldn’t help the furrow in his brows as he squeezed Janus’ hand slightly tighter, without removing his hand he leaned down and pulled the emergency medkit from under the bed. Starting to bandage the ankle, Logan thought for a second or two, things beginning to click into place.
“Did Virgil also help Patton?” Logan grimaced at the nod
“Did they tell you not to tell me?”
Another nod.
“How did they do this to you, love?”
Janus locked hazy eyes with Logan, “They pushed me down the stairs…” Logan traced his tongue over his canine, grounding his rage in the dull pain.
“....”
“Lo? Are you ok?”
“Is anything else injured?”
Janus blinked, “I uh, scraped my shoulder on the railing..” Logan nodded and helped Janus sit up against the headboard, Janus unbuttoned his shirt and let it hang around his elbows.
Logan pushed his glasses up and looked at the long scrape, it was bright red and oozing yellow pus. Red streaks surrounding the wound, because of course the wooden railing would cause an infection. The logical side bit into his tongue harder as he continued to dig in the medkit.
Logan first disinfected it, comforting Janus when he squirmed in pain, then applied infection cream, “I’m going to kill them.” Janus looked at him in shock
“Come on starlight, you don’t mean that.” Janus rubbed the end of Logan’s tie while he pulled out the gauze
Logan lined the gauze up carefully, “yes I do. No one should ever harm you. You deserve to feel safe.”
Janus fumbled a bit with his speech, a small tinge of blush spreading across his face, “still, you can’t kill them starlight. Thomas needs them..” Silence spread throughout the shared bedroom, “Logan, promise me that you won’t do anything”
Logan sighed, “I promise I won’t lay a finger on them love.”
Janus smiled and Logan could feel the amount of love in that simple action. The smile was wide and grateful as the yellow side leaned forward to kiss the tip of Logan’s nose. Logan chuckled slightly as he held out two small blue pills, to which Janus took happily and fell back onto the pillows with Logan's help.
“I love you Logan.”
“I love you too Janus.” Logan slid off the bed and walked to the other side, snapping his fingers to make the lights shut off as he slid into the bed. His love curling up to his chest.
Janus was right, Logan wouldn’t lay a finger on Virgil and Patton...
But he would tell Thomas about them.

Loceit (no U!Janus or Logan) and maybe they have to keep their relationship a secret because of Patton's prejudices against the dark sides. But Patton finds out. (U!Patton)?
I'm not sure if this is quite what you wanted, but here you go!
Characters: Logan, Patton, Janus (mentioned), Roman (mentioned), Virgil (mentioned)
Word count: 958
Warnings: Implied death
They had been so careful. Always making sure to only meet at night, once all of the others had gone to bed. Taking care to hide themselves away on the dark side of the mindscape, or sometimes even in the Imagination, to make sure none of the others would find out. They rarely even spoke to each other outside of those nights and when they had to, they made sure to keep their interactions cordial and formal enough to stave off suspicion. There's no way anyone could have realized what was happening. Especially not him.
Yet, when Patton came up to him that morning, smiling as brightly as ever, Logan still felt his stomach sink. He wasn't sure how or when Patton had found out, but he was sure he knew. And he was sure he wasn't happy about it. Logan looked around desperately but of course, none of the other sides woke up this early. The two of them were alone in the dining room, and Logan was trapped.
He forced himself to return Patton's smile as the other side set down a plate of toast in front of him before sitting down across the table. Logan didn't look at him. Instead, he stared down at his toast and tried to think of an excuse to get away so he could warn Janus, when Patton's voice broke through his thoughts.
"You know, Lo, I always used to think you were the smartest side. I mean, compared to Virgil and Roman at least, you always seemed so.... reasonable. So, I figured that if I could trust anyone here to follow the rules, it would be you."
Logan didn't reply. Luckily, Patton didn't seem to want one as he kept talking.
"And yet, you're the one who decides it would be a good idea to start dating one of them. I- where did I go wrong, Logan? What did I do to make you pick him over us?" Patton's voice when he said that sounded so sad and so broken, that for a moment Logan almost felt guilty enough to apologise.
Almost.
"Patton, I am truly sorry that's how you see this, but I will not let you guilt me over my feelings for Janus." Despite how hard his heart was pounding, his voice came out surprisingly steady. "He not evil, or wrong, or a bad influence, or whatever other excuse you're going to use to try and demonize him. And I am not going to apologise for being in love with him."
Patton watched him as he spoke, his expression unreadable in a way that made Logan's stomach twist. "You're making a mistake, kiddo."
Logan shook his head, though his voice was far less steady when he spoke this time. "No, I'm not. Loving Janus isn't a mistake, but listening to you for this long was." As soon as the words left his mouth, he regretted them. But it was too late to take them back now and he was sick of lying.
Patton's gaze turned cold and he stood. "If that's what you really think, kiddo, then I don't think you belong here anymore."
Logan frowned, shakily getting to his feet as well. "You- you're throwing me out?" Even as he said those words, he felt a slight hint of relief. If Patton truly was just sending him over to the dark sides, then he was getting off far more lightly than he could have even hoped for. It meant he'd get to be with Janus, and it would likely be far safer than staying here with Patton.
Patton smiled at him as if he knew what he was thinking. "Yes, Lo, I'm throwing you out. I think a side that doesn't understand right and wrong shouldn't get to be a side anymore."
That made Logan pause and a sense of unease crept over him. "What do you mean, 'shouldn't be a side anymore'-?"
Patton's smile only grew. "Well, kiddo, we have pretty clear boundaries here and even the darks, awful as they are, know to follow them. It's how we keep order. But if someone can't follow them.... Well. It's in everyone's best interests for that side to go away, don't you think?"
The full implication of Patton's words took a moment to sink in, and when it did, Logan felt sick. "What have you done to Janus-?"
At that, Patton's smile grew so much it seemed as though it would split his face in two. "Don't worry, kiddo. You'll find out soon enough."
Logan opened his mouth to ask again but as he did, Patton snapped his fingers and he found he couldn't speak. In fact, he couldn't really seem to move at all. The realization dawned on him with a wave of horror and he stared up at Patton helplessly. The other side only smiled as Logan slowly felt his body start to go numb and he crumpled to the floor.
Patton was sending him to the imagination. The thought brought with it the realization that he must have done the same thing to Janus, and Logan wanted to cry. Janus must have been terrified and alone, having no one to help him and no way to warn Logan. What had he been thinking? What had been his last words, his last thoughts?
He'd never know. And he'd never even get to say goodbye. As he lay there, Patton watching over him like a twisted guardian angel, Logan wanted to scream. He wanted to cry and beg and call for help. He wanted to demand Patton let him go or bring Janus back, if that were even possible. But all he could do was lay there and slowly wait to fade into blackness.

Unsymptober october the 2nd!
Unsympathetic Roman, Sympathetic Janus, fae!au, tw implied torture, tw mind control
@unsympathetic-october-2020
Prince Roman of Greven was bored. And good things did not tend to happen when Prince Roman was bored. Needless executions of people who displeased him tended to happen when he was bored and the guards were not very excited by the prospect of being beheaded, which is why they were currently in the woods, searching for something that could entertain him.
There was a rustle in the bushes and they caught a yellow tail in the corner of their eyes.
“What are you doing here?” The creature behind the bush said, half of the group began to walk towards the creature and half snuck on the other side to grab him by his tail. Not being an idiot, the creature ran. But in returning to his burrow he made the mistake of showing them where his home was. Hours past, day turned to night and day turned to night, but the guards stayed, and inevitably the creature tried to escape, only to get a net in his face. He spat and hissed but to no avail as he was thrown into a dungeon.
The cell he was placed in was cold, he began to sway as a lethargic energy washed over him. Half-awake he changed his body, in hopes that having less of his body touching the floor would allow him to stay awake for longer. But as soon as his form turned mostly human, his knees buckled under him and he fell into a heap on the floor. He stared at the door of the cell as he felt his eyelids slowly start to flutter closed. There had to be some sort of weakness, this couldn’t be the end... This couldn’t-
He gasped as he felt a gentle wave of warmth hit his body, if he kept his eyes closed he could almost imagine the sun hitting his scales from the pinpricks of light in his burrow. He opened his mouth in a wide yawns, running his tongue across his sharp teeth. He felt a hand stroke his back and his eyes shot open. He backed away and gave a loud hiss. A movement that would unnerve any other, but the Prince merely laughed and put his hand to his chest.
"I'm shocked and hurt! You act as if I would hurt you little snake." Roman paused for a second and squinted at him, "You look familiar... Do I know you? What's your name?"
The creature raised an eyebrow and stepped back, "I'm not a fool, fairy."
Roman huffed, "Well you don't need to be rude about it! Alright alright, you don't desire to tell me your name. Fine, will you tell me where I know you from then?"
The creature crossed its arms and turned away.
"Well, there are many ways to get a being to speak," his voice turned sing-songy as he shouted, "Oh guuuuuards-”
“NO!” The creature shouted and Roman grinned smugly and crossed his arms.
The creature cleared his throat, “I-I used to be Prince Remus of Ardonia’s top adviser. He was upset with me after I recommended that we surrender to you as we were losing tropes in the war so I decided the best decision was to vanish for a while.”
Roman clapped his hands, “Oh how absolutely perfect! You’ll make a lovely little spy for me snake.”
The creature rolled his eyes, “Yes, after being captured and caged by you I want nothing more than to assist you in betraying my best friend and my nation.”
“Really?” Roman blinked, “That’s very strange of you, I expected to need the guards at least once after this-”
The creature rubbed his forehead, “No, not ‘really.’”
Roman shook his head, “What a shame, I really do hate torture. It’s so...” He scrunched his nose, “Barbaric. Blech.” He ran a finger down the creature’s thighs, “And those scales of yours are so pretty too...”
The creature was, at this point both creeped out and incredibly tired of this entire conversation. Now was the time to transform. His body twisted and snapped and finally with a loud pop he turned into a snake. He slithered towards the door but found the bottom of the door far thinner than he supposed. He turned away from it to look at the rest of the room so he could search for another exit- but seconds later felt himself being scooped off the floor in a net and he felt himself... Become sleepy...
The last thing he heard was Roman saying, “It’s amazing how specific my summoning abilities are isn’t it?”
--------------------------------------------------------
The creature panted with exhaustion, he could only imagine how he looked. Even glancing at the burns and thick scratch marks on his arms made him flinch. He couldn’t remember what had happened during the last few hours and he was glad for that.. Until he heard Roman’s voice.
“Janus is a pretty lame name. It makes you sound like an old lady.” The creature felt as if he’d just been dunked into a frozen lake. The power of his name being spoken. “I wonder if I’m powerful enough to change it, I don’t think anyone’s done anything like that before, but I’m great enough to be the first.”
The creature’s eyes darted back and fourth. No one was supposed to know his name, especially not- Escape, he needed to escape now. Get out of here, find Remus, find a way to hide from Roman forever- he felt his feet start to move on instinct. Run run run-
“Janus, halt.”
His feet went still, he tried to move them but they stayed still as marble.
“Come here.”
There was no amount of willpower that could stop him from moving towards Roman standing directly in front of him. The Prince loomed over him, a satisfied look on his face.
“Kneel before your Prince, Janus.” The creature moved down on one knee looking at the ground. Roman walked around him looking him over, “You know you lied to me a lot during that process, I had to try like 10 fake names before you gave me your real one.” He gave a sigh and cupped the creature’s face in his hand, “But it was worth it. You’re mine now Janus.” Roman kissed his forehead, “You’ll make a lovely little spy.”
Janus was fucked.

Roman and Logan’s Dark Strange Son: Rewrite
Pairings: Romantic Logince, Platonic Loginceit/Roloceit
Word Count: 1,048 Words
Summary: Deceit gets showed his new room next to Roman and Logan’s. (aka they officially ‘adopt’ him)
Warnings: Sympathetic Deceit, Unsympathetic Patton, Implied Eating Disorder, Trust Issues, Secret Friendships, Food Mentions, Mentions of Death (in the means of ‘fading’), let me know if I should tag something else.
Chapter 3
It took a good three weeks to gain Deceit's trust. From being able to go in his room, to talking about personal things, to finally being able to bring him to his new room.
The yellow room was all set up with yellow, black, and gold furniture that Roman had summoned and painted himself. Logan had added more of the decorations and additives the room. Yellow ceiling stars, a second bed curtain on the bedposts for even more privacy, fairy lights on the headboard for light at night. The more they learned, the more they added to the room for Deceit's inevitable move-in date.
When Patton and Virgil inevitably asked questions on the color choices and what they were doing, they explained it away as them wanting a neutral room to be alone in. Yellow had been a 'funny coincidence' of being Deceit's color since it was the only primary color left and Virgil had the color purple, which their colors combined to.
Patton and Virgil had been satisfied enough with this explanation that they hadn't questioned further and had lost interest in watching them set up the room. Now it was time to move Deceit in.
So here Roman sat with Ceres, a baby Burmese python, slithering across him and he was admiring the good girl. Logan had just finished feeding Iris, the sunbeam snake, and was currently letting her be alone to bask.
The indigo and silver scales that covered Logan's neck were given little attention, as were the red and gold ones on Roman's hands. Deceit was currently placing Juno, the Amazon tree boa, back in her enclosure then he came to help Roman put back Ceres.
"You should both leave, you're too scaly." Deceit tried to urge them out.
"We need to show you something, actually." Roman began.
"What?" Deceit asked.
"We have a surprise for you in the Mind Palace, Dee." Logan clarified.
"O-Okay." The shortest side let them lead him back to the Mind Palace, all the way upstairs, but not to the door yet. It was nearly two in the morning, Patton had long since gone to bed, likely having been watching Parks and Rec, and Virgil's insomnia medication usually meant he passed out around midnight.
"I'm going to cover your eyes, is that okay?" Logan asked. He got a small 'yeah' before doing so and guiding Deceit to the bedroom door while Roman walked ahead and opened the door to the yellow room. Logan let his hands down and Deceit's eyes opened to the room.
Bright yellow ceiling stars lit up the room like the night sky, the bed curtains opened to shoe the inside and the fairy lights. Tiny flowers on the desk and Dreamworks posters strewn about. much to Roman's beginning Dismay that the snakelike side liked Dreamworks over Disney.
Despite it's original yellow/gold/black toned appearance, the room swirled with deep blues and whites due in large part to Deceit's favorite character, Jack Frost. Deceit's eyes blew wide and he looked back at Logan and then to Roman as if he wasn't sure who had done this.
"You two did this?" He asked softly.
"We wanted to make sure you don't start fading. To do that, we can't have you an hour away from us. So we thought we'd make you a room here that you can stay in so we can be sure you're okay." Roman assured him.
"You made a room just so you could take care of me?" Deceit asked.
"Of course. My other option was going to be having you stay at my castle but that's in the Imagination and the same distance away, so we wouldn't be able to check on you quickly if such a problem were to arise." Roman explained.
Without any further confirmation, the shortest side flung his body against them, hugging the both of them tightly. That night they spent with him, both laying on either side of their dark, strange son, both continuing work from that day until they could fall asleep nearing four in the morning.
The next morning went by just as they'd thought it would, Logan made breakfast while Roman made coffee as Patton usually slept in and Virgil woke up in a few hours, groggy and still tired from his medication. It was a game of dodging.
Deceit woke up only an hour after them, at nine in the morning, two hours before Virgil usually woke up at eleven. This allotted time to them all helping to make breakfast for the other two sleeping sides to wake up to.
They knew, of course, of Deceit's aversion to eating around others, something they'd both deemed was probably a form of an eating disorder they didn't want to press so soon after gaining his trust.
So, after getting a list of things Dee was allergic to, they immediately reformed the recipes they wanted to make. No dairy was an allergy Roman shared, something they already left out and had no issue continuing to do so. But eggs, Deceit apparently loved eggs.
So that's just what they did. They ended up making eggs, non-dairy pancakes, and french toast. Deceit obviously thought they were going over the top until he realized they were cooking for five people, not just three, then he seemed to accept it and move along helping.
They put on Rise of the Guardians and Moana to eat to and they both couldn't help but smile noting that Deceit had both finished off his plate and fallen back to sleep between them.
Roman ended up carrying him back upstairs to take a nap and closed the door softly to give him some privacy. Virgil woke up in this time and began toddling downstairs after Roman to the coffee machine, pawing at it like it would know what he wanted.
Roman helpfully poured him his coffee the way he liked it and got a head against his shoulder in thanks as Virgil took his liquid energy for the day and sat at the table still half asleep. No way he'd seen Deceit in his half-delusioned state.
Patton came down a half hour later for breakfast. Logan and Roman never spoke a word that day of their happy first morning with their very own dark, strange son.
