Turlough Is (a) Turlough in Lords of the Storm
Forgive the highlight in the second screenshot. I’m weird.
These two bits are basically back to back. Turlough’s response to being told he’s not allowed to go somewhere is that he is Turlough. It keeps working out for him out of Refuge in Audacity.
The interesting thing is that Lords of the Storm takes place in Space India, a future human colony that models itself on India. Turlough starts doing this “I’m Turlough” thing after learning about how different castes live in different parts of the city they’re in. Apparently Trion is a lot like this. Turlough ends up kind of liking this colony, by human colony standards, because this aspect of the culture feels similar to what he was raised with.
The Imperial Clans were a sort of ruling caste. Turlough is the name of a family of this ruling caste, basically. Turlough is doing the sort of thing that would work back home. “I can go wherever my family’s important”. Of course, Trion castes and Indian castes have nothing to do with one another and no one on the colony is going to recognize the Turlough name, and Turlough should definitely know this, but he apparently just gets caught up in this sense of familiarity. The fact this familiarity comes from a caste system is kind of sad, but it’s also funny to see Turlough just deciding that his family name means he can do whatever, because that’s what it was like back home.
#Vislor Turlough#lords of the storm#imperial caste#this novel shifts the portrayal of trion from a western aristocracy to something resembling the indian caste system#which is kind of interesting

i think a lot about hot sauce and jeannemary. two young girls so ready to kill and to die. a comparison made all the worse when you recall that hot sauce lost all her family to the cohort, that she can specifically recall fourth style necromancy (using corpses as bombs). a fourteen and thirteen year old that could easily have been on opposite sides of the same front line.
#the locked tomb#the loss of childhood! senseless violence!#opposite ends of the propaganda machine#eskildit posts tlt#all of nona the ninth#how am i supposed to tag hot sauce#jeannemary chatur#ok to rb#edit: okay im actually gonna use these tags to ramble a lil#in many ways i feel alecto the ninth is gonna be the hardest book to actually pull off#first for the obvious reason that its an ending and endings are always hard#but second because nona the ninth was by far the most political book of the series#books 1 and 2 following harrow and gideon mean we're following characters on the outskirts of the empire#gideon is individually oppressed by the ninth and even harrow is considered a black sheep outsider of the nine houses#but they are still WITHIN the houses gideon has dreams of the cohort harrow has dreams of of revitalizing her house#nona was our actual introduction to the real consequences of the empire that characters like judith like jeannemary like corona herself#have their livelihoods and status entirely built on the imperial violence we see first hand on new rho#anyway i say all of this to say it means coming back to these characters might be kinda tricky!#the cost of the empire is no longer abstract its extremely palpable!#how does one return to our core cast we've know for multiple books now that we understand that#idk. interested to see where we go!

Palo and Tigran standing casually in place to provide an outfit reference.
They are wearing the most typical day to day clothing for Galenii monks. This consists of three main parts:
-A simple, ankle-length sleeveless robe (white in initiate monks and black in the fully initiated). -A dark woolen cloak, which doubles as a blanket. This cloak is the foundational item of clothing throughout much of Imperial Wardin as a whole, and worn by all social classes. They tend to be cut shorter and highly decorative in the upper classes, serving only the practical purpose of shielding the arms from the sun. Poor laborers may wear only the cloak and a loincloth and nothing else. In the case of Galenii monks, it is standardized, simple, and dark blue-gray. -The sash. This is a very long scarf that is the primary visual signifier of a Galenii monk. Its open ends drape down the front side of the body and are tied at the chest. It is slung over the shoulders and hangs in a loop around the back. These sashes are dyed an expensive royal blue, indicating the significance and relative esteemed status of this religious order.
Additional elements:
-The sign of the horns: a small iron pin used to fasten the cloak. This is the symbol of the Lunar Face Of God (the specific aspect to which the Galenii are devoted, which is primarily associated with fertility and the cycles of sacrifice and rebirth). This is very common among monks but not standardized wear. Galenii priests wear the sign of the triple horns (though more commonly as an amulet).
-Ear piercings: Galenii monks and priests wear thick earrings of dark meteoric iron and stretch their earlobes. One is added to each ear for each year of the initiatory process. Palo is a year in, and Tigran is fully initiated and has five bands per ear. Body modification is exceptionally rare in Imperial Wardi culture, largely in relation to taboos surrounding body integrity. The exception here is done with great significance and care- these earrings can be made only with true meteoric iron, considered to be the blood of God Itself. Permanently marking their bodies with this metal signifies this priesthood's integral connection to maintaining the continual cycle of sacrifice/rebirth that is believed to keep God's domain stable, and binds them to this role.
-Sandals: usually very simple in construction. Monks are often expected to go barefoot, but the cities are quite dirty so most prefer to avoid this if possible.
-Ceremonial dagger: a sign of a fully initiated monk. It is curved and its sheath is decorated with a tuft of lion's mane (a signal of the Galenii order's close connection to the Odonii order). Most of its uses are ceremonial, but it will be periodically used to perform animal sacrifices. A smaller razor blade is kept in the home for personal bloodletting.
-Hair: Fully initiated monks shave their heads, while those in the process of initiation have relative freedom with hair dressing. Palo is wearing his hair in a single braid tucked around the front. Broadly speaking, braiding the hair is associated with female beauty standards throughout much of Imperial Wardin (though generally in two braids). There is no cultural convention Against men doing so, but it is regarded as mildly effeminate (particularly in the south and southeast).
-Lore Friendly Sunglasses: Palo has photosensitive epilepsy. No effective treatments for epilepsy exist in the setting (most 'treatments' in Imperial Wardin are alchemical in nature, ie: ambiguously helpful at best or literal poison at worst), but understanding of the Nature of epilepsy as a neurological disorder is relatively accurate, and the concept of photosensitivity is loosely understood (though not with great accuracy, it's assumed to be caused by light in General). Palo had this pair of (VERY expensive) sunglasses commissioned as a youth, which Do slightly reduce the frequency of his seizures. Devastatingly stylish as they may be, his glasses do not offer much visual clarity so he only wears them in bright conditions.
#Am working on the dreaded Art Fight References#Also height comparison. Palo looks taller than he is because he's skinny as fuck and next to a 4'9'' guy. But he's 5'10''#Which is above average height for the setting (average man is probably 5'6''-7'') but not huge#I kind of need to reintroduce these guys because I made the earliest posts about them right around when I started actually writing#and a lot of their background lore has changed.#Namely their upbringings- most of the cast of the White Calf are stupid wealthy Imperial Wardi elites and I needed these guys to be like...#Normal people.#Tigran is still from a branch of a family that is wealthy in distant Ubibi but his specific branch is poor agricultural laborers living#around the lower Brilla river next to Wardin (city)#Palo is still better off but not crazy rich- his family were glass workers and traders out of Godsmouth and#would be considered middle class. Wealthy enough for occasional extravagances like sunglasses but nothing ridiculous#Most of the post-White Calf era stuff is now outdated too#AND ON ANOTHER TANGENT- most sun protective eyewear in this part of the setting is less 'elegant' (affordable sunglasses would#be mostly sheets of hammered bronze with punctured holes)#There is relatively sophisticated eyewear produced in Bur and Imperial Wardin (including some actual moderately useful glasses for#correcting visual impairment) but good pairs are prohibitively expensive and made by dedicated craft workers#Palo's pair would have cost about a year of his father's wages#palo apolynnon#tigran otto#the white calf

Can you elaborate on the Our Flag Means Death thing? If you want
Yeah! So I get that realism isn't the be-all end-all of fiction, but. I really wish Taika Waititi et al. had done even 30 seconds of research on 18th century American history before they wrote an extended joke about the protagonist having a "man for sale" in episode 3. Yes, it's a white man being sold, but a guy still gets led to a market by a rope around his neck and then auctioned off... and this is played for laughs. I don't know a ton of Caribbean history, but even I know that no one in Nassau in 1717 would have been confused by the idea of selling a human being, the way they are on OFMD.
That was all before I found out that the real Stede Bonnet was a known enslaver and possible rapist. I think his story could be a horror comedy about a horrible person being horrible (see: What We Do in the Shadows) but the Stede we see on OFMD spouts progressive pop-psych slogans and is allegedly here to teach us radical self-love. Not a great combination.
Also, I'm one of the people who found OFMD unwatchable partially because I'd seen Black Sails. Black Sails came out 8 years before, features a lot of the same historical figures and Treasure Island characters, and has more queer rep than OFMD. But Black Sails's main plot is about a doomed-yet-glorious fight to end slavery in the Americas in the 1700s, and it is unflinchingly honest in its depictions of racism, imperialism, and homophobia. So it's jarring and deeply unfunny to see some of that same material cleaned up (the polyamorous main character is now a monogamous gay man; the kill-or-be-enslaved stakes are now potted plant thefts) or else swept under the rug (acknowledging slavery and homophobia would ruin the fun! let's pretend they don't exist!) for a different show that gets lauded as "groundbreaking" for its milquetoast repackaging of queerness.
#media negativity#media criticism#black sails#imperialism#wading into the pirate battle#black sails: in a world ruled by empire; crime is the only moral choice (especially for those made criminal by birth)#flag show: problems are solvable if you just talk :) it :) through :) as :) a :) crew :)#black sails: we're going to get into aspects of sexism and misgynoir that'll haunt you forever#flag show: pish posh! we solved that by just not having any women in the main cast!

It's a little terrifying that you seem to have willed Gladiator II's Geta and Caracalla into existence
wheezing I wish I had this kind of power so that I could will a Ridley Scott Caligula movie into existence
#also SO excited bc it looks like the film is going to be exploring things with gladiators that I’m OBSESSED with but see less frequently#In media with gladiators because the Spartacus film casts a long shadow and gladiatorial combat in the imperial era is fascinating#In it’s own right like ohhhhhhh my god movie this movie is going to do SO much for me#like the messy intersections of characters and power and politics and how it all hits a climax in arena combat as a stage#hghghghghhh#ask tag

I got the Black Series Tech. My thoughts about the action figure are below the cut, as well as the same rant I've been commenting and re-blogging are below the cut, if anyone cares.
I want Crosshair to join his Chaos Twin on adventures, but all that's available is at a reasonable price is in Imperial armor.
He looks confused or annoyed (did he get a leak of the season 3 script?). His hairline is even further receded. His features look more like Jango's than the cartoon character, but he is further white-washed. 🙄 He was not bank-breakingly exponsive, not as cheap as that loose die-cast K2-SO up there. I am tempted to double his cost to buy a 3D printed head off Etsy to give him goggles and darker skin, since he's never seen without them in the show. Why did this and the helmet-less Funko have him without goggles? (More season 3 foreshadowing).
Disney didn't care about The Clone Wars or The Bad Batch. I firmly believe the creators thought they'd get 4 seasons of 30 minute episodes, which would have neatly resolved things at a comfortable pace. It's not Disney's full IP, unlike Rebels- The Mandalorian and sequels. And it doesn't have the tested legacy of the Original Trilogy. It's animated, which everyone knows is not the very serious storytelling medium live action is (Ahsoka is a very serious show) . Part of my evidence is how many Black Seies Ahsokas and Reys are there? Why can't I meet Wrecker or Rex in SWGE?

I feel if you asked the question "Did the God Emperor prefer Tits or Ass" in a large public venue on world with a large number of Soritas, would spark fierce debate, leading to violence and sparking existing bad-blood into possible wars.
This is the type of question that the Water Caste Cultural Engineers and other such manipulators, use as Great Weapons in their battles against the Imperial Cult.
....
For those who want my opinion, my answer is that the Emperor (corpse god) was Gay and Homophobic.
#warhammer#all according to keikaku#tau empire#water caste#writing mode#40k#this is mostly a joke#I do think the Water Caste spark internal conflicts in the Ministrorum to weaken imperial moral/faith and waste imperial resources

Note - Includes only HFS characters who are in a caste. Uncasted HFS characters are not mentioned.
Part of the greater HFS Character Masterlist system. Includes character names, caste, and a basic description. Designs are not included (I'd go over the 30 image limit)
~~~~
Hylia
Farore
Din
Nayru
The Seven Heroines
Zelda the First (Rauru and Sonia’s daughter, not to be confused with Zelda 1 from Zelda 1 & 2)
Zelda Imei (Hyrule’s princess of the past Calamity, first royal to marry a Wolfbred after the caste system’s implementation)
Shamia, the Disgraced (first-born of Kakku and Zelda Imei, first female to be removed from the Line of Hylia, responsible for the Sheikah and Wolfbred genocides and exiles; had her soul destroyed by Hylia herself)
Karu, the Unshakable (middle-born of Kakku and Zelda Imei, first male to jump his sister’s place in the line of succession)
Kumi (last-born of Kakku and Zelda Imei, usually mistaken as Karu’s son)
Zelda Mineru (daughter of Karu, born after her people’s exile)
Zelda Miranda (last ruling queen, assassinated ten years prior by the Yiga Clan)
Zelda Esmerelda (current high priestess and crown princess)
Zelda Ivee (future, currently unborn)
Dinraal (Zarru, pre-draconification, priestess of Akkala and Eldin before draconification; it is said that despair drove her to commit draconification on the Altar of Power, but what caused that despair only Hylia knows)
Farosh (Tikkiru, pre-draconification, priest of the Spring of Courage; prior to Rauru’s establishment of Hyrule, he was convinced to commit draconification)
Naydra (Toma, pre-draconification, priest of the Lanayru Promenade and Spring of Wisdom; received a vision of the Zonai’s impending doom and sought out Vammira to assist with the tasks both Hylia and Nayru brought upon him. The first to draconify. Rauru was never aware of any of this, and he and Sonia met due to Rauru’s struggle to comprehend what had happened: Sonia’s knowledge of sacred acts and divine commands brought counsel and peace to the last two Zonai.)
Sirie (Farore, pre-transmutation, a disgraced attempt to scientifically bring the Zonai back from practical extinction via cloning and appointed by Queen Sonia as Tikkiru’s replacement several years before the Imprisoning War. Became the Guardian Saint of Wisdom after transmutation and serves the Spring of Wisdom)
Berlon (Fray, pre-transmutation. Became the Guardian Saint of Courage after transmutation and serves the Spring of Courage)
Tyrvori (Became half the Guardian Saint of Power after transmutation and serves the Spring of Power with his wife)
Mursi (Became half the Guardian Saint of Power after transmutation and serves the Spring of Power with her husband)
Regent (A spirit ordaining rulers of Hyrule; it is believed that no one ascends without his approval)
Vammira (A spirit seem as a bad omen, as it is believed she manipulates potential saints to commit draconification)
Kazuli (Wolfbred husband of Zelda the First)
Kakku (Genetically edited Zonai-Wolfbred husband of Zelda Imei; descended from Mineru by genetic engineering)
Rhoam (Current King Regent of Hyrule)
Link (Originally from the Half-Citizens caste, Arvador and basically prince of the Wolfbred with none of royalty's benefits)
Urbosa (Originally from the Foreign Royals caste, dear friend of Zelda Miranda, ally to Hyrule and mother figure to Zelda Esmerelda)
Mipha (Originally from the Foreign Royals caste, heir to the Zora throne with a unique tie to the disgraced Wolfbred)
Revali (Originally from the Peasants caste, a Rito with a control over wind thought to be impossible)
Daruk (Originally from the Lower Class caste, a Goron with the power to create a true force field)
Rassill Alder (A member of Princess Zelda’s personal guard)
Jack Alder (A throne room guard captain)
Tarim (A Castle Town guard captain with obvious Gerudo blood)
Impa
Purah
Akeku (Urbosa’s niece and heir to the helm of the Gerudo)
Tith (Rito elder)
Esosu (Urbosa’s Captain of the Palace Guard, basically Urbosa’s Buliara)
Khosha (Revali’s wife, elevated to Foreign Noble after Revali's ordination)
Tarotis (Related to Daruk, elevated to Foreign Noble after Daruki's ordination)
Lillemor
Horacio (The Sheikah Court Poet)
Elra (one of Purah’s subordinates)
Kohga
Sooga
*none*
Irra (High-ranking Yiga, although Yiga ranks don’t influence the system)
Astor
Caphia (A young Hylian girl living in Goponga)
Tavo/Vyrtuka (An elderly Zora living in Goponga who’s been adopted into the Wolfbred tribe)
Modern -
Midna Marie (Link’s mother and the head of the Elder’s Ring of Hateno. Prophetess and historian, although on the brink of insanity due to what the Circle forced her to do. Died suddenly at thirty-two when Link was twelve, suspected to be genetic-related organ failure.)
Ordon (Link’s father, and a blacksmith by trade. Once a highly decorated Royal Guard and a favorite of Queen Zelda, he laid down his sword to raise his children after his wife’s sudden passing. It seems he always has a look of guilt etched onto his face…)
Link (before Ordination)
Sydnei (Link’s eight year old sister, almost ten years younger. A lover and raiser of Cuccos as well as her brother’s biggest fan. Link would do whatever it took to save her from the realities of the modern Wolfbred tribe.)
Talo (A member of the Elder’s Ring of Hateno)
Quinari (A member of the Elder’s Ring of Hateno)
Pryze (Sir Pryze is one of the Castle's last Wolfbred knights. He is a mentor to Link, and ten years older. Uli is his mother. A throne room guard until the assassination of Queen Zelda, then relocated to Zora’s Domain with the rest of the Wolfbred knights until Link summoned him back as part of Princess Zelda’s personal guard.)
Uli (Cousin of Midna Marie, although she's like a sister to her. What happened to Midna because of how the Sheikah dehumanized their tribe in ages long past makes her very willing to lash out at the Shadow People. Wants nothing to do with Hyrule. In her words, if Link is only a "half-citizen," then the kingdom can only demand half his life for their wars. Pryze is her son.)
Twili (The apothecary of Hateno Village. Mistaken to be Link's mother several times by non-Wolfbred, due to misinterpreting the Wolfbred's affectionate culture (and the fact that Link acts less shy with Wolfbred) to be a family relationship between the two.)
Kokori (A senior (30+) Wolfbred living in Goponga Village. Considers her home among the Zora, serving as an assistant to Goponga’s general store owner. The fourth youngest Wolfbred. Colin is her husband)
Colin (Kokori’s husband and a fisherman in the Lanayru Wetlands)
Sage (Link’s spiritual advisor, teaches and leads him through his Arvador duties and takes them over when he becomes a Champion. Fifty years old, which is considered ancient to the tribe who only lives through their thirties.)
~~~
Ancient -
Perfection/Failure (Don’t get me started on him, just read the post)
Mable
Lon Lon/Lenora
Mabe
Sanidin
Saria
Arbiter
Karusa
Koma
Mezra (A member of the founding Elder’s Ring of Hateno, said to have garnered a personal connection to the Twilight. The Wolfbred’s afterlife beliefs primarily stem from her and Hami)
Hami (Founding ruler of Hateno Village, if you listen closely under the full moon, perhaps you will hear her call. Said to be spirit-bound to a Twili, she heavily influences the Wolfbred’s afterlife beliefs along with Mezra. Often depicted as a ghost-like wolf.)
Poe/Raven (A female Wolfbred with Arvador-type duties. While the Arvador title is unique to Link, this lady is in charge of the spiritual aspects that are most closely mirroring the Arvador: burials of puppies, spiritual work, etc. She maintains all the funeral rites and death tasks for Hateno Village.)
Ranvu (Hami’s husband)
Risoka (A former chamberlain for the Royal Family whose love for caring for and serving others became the basis of Hateno’s communal society)
Callisto
Jia (A member of the founding Elder’s Ring of Hateno, and Hateno’s first historian, transcribing history into song to prevent its loss. Her most notable “song” was a warning given to King Rauru by the Priestess Farore shortly before he died)
~~~
Deities excluded from the Pantheon and Pantheon Saint castes -
Celeano Orientalis
Neclutoph (also in Sheikah mythology, escorted the two tribes to Necluda after being cast from Hyrule and protected the tribes throughout exile)
Tilir (an eel-like Zora said to have protected puppies from being put to death)
~~~
Individuals who died before the institution of the caste system (earlier than 10,000 years before BotW) have no caste and are organized by sub-kingdom; except for the Pantheon, Lineage of Hylia and both Royalty castes
Individuals born after the Great Calamity have no caste, nor sub-kingdom

One of the fun things I saw while playing last night was Vegeta getting fruits and triggering a line that was something like, “This apple looks good. I might keep it.”
No sharing with the boys this apple is his now
He’s also the only character I’ve seen so far comment on the market value of mined materials, which I love
#SketchesPlaysKakarot#‘This (rock) should fetch a good price’ You would know Geets!#I love any bit that reminds the audience this man is an ex-Military/Imperial Enforcer with almost 30 years of experience nfjdjd#I’m 99.99% sure in all of db/z Vegeta and Bulma are the only ones in the main cast who’ve ever held an actual job fjdjjdjd
