Hello, I was wondering what criteria you personally use to decide if something is a species or a subspecies?
I quite like Kevin de Queiroz's recent take on the matter, so I will refer you to him. There has been quite a bit of subsequent discussion, some of which I agree with, some of which I think is a bit moronic.
TL;DR: They should be treated as a difference of degree, not of kind, and can conveniently be used to capture the grey zone that we know characterises the incipient stages of speciation.
#speciation#taxonomy#science#zoology#biology#species#subspecies#these are real things#but genera?#genera are an illusion#families doubly so#evolution acts on populations/(sub)species#but higher taxa are just the result of what is filtered out over time#impalaparkedat221b#answers by Mark

Some of my favorite trees are oaks. Unrelatedly, they are in the family Fagaceae.
OAK TREE NATION RISE
#not a heritage post#asks#impalaparkedat221b#didn't know that's what the oak family was called that's pretty funny#I just know oaks are one of the most beneficial native trees to our area and host a wide variety of species so. we love and respect oaks

@impalaparkedat221b replied to your post “vaccinated THIRTY rabbits with CDT today, as well...”:
Out of curiosity, what is CDT?
CDT is a vaccine given to hoofstock to protect against clostridial diseases C & D, as well as tetatnus (the T). apparently my rabbitry got infected with one of those or a related disease, which is the main cause of the Icks that killed a lot of my kits a couple years ago (and still, if i lax on my schedule). so i gotta use the vaccine off-label to keep my rabbits from dying lol

hey, I saw you saying you have done field work with tagging and what not. I’m hoping to get into that same line of work. At the moment im planning to go to school for it but I was wondering how you got into those positions and if they were purely seasonal or if some were permanent positions
Hi! I'll do my best to answer this question without writing a novel.🤞
For some context, the tagging I've been involved with was mostly in the context of assisting/chaperoning visiting researchers to the wildlife refuge I worked at! I functioned essentially as a biotech/assistant to researchers who got funding and a permit to come work on the refuge - partially to help them actually work through their ambitious permit, and partially because as a visitor, they're very unfamiliar with the refuge itself! I was a set of hands to do work, & also a boat operator/outdoor guide/safety check/permit compliance watchdog throughout their project. I did a lot of biological work that was just in service of FWS, too, but the visiting researchers generally have the more exciting and crazy projects (because they are getting funded privately, and not through the very sad federal FWS budget). This was all seasonal.
Specifically for the government (but also with private conservation organizations), it's usually pretty damn hard to get a permanent position. You usually have to do years of temporary & seasonal work before you're in the running for something stable! Some temporary contracts are set up so they can be perpetually "renewed," and can end up being semi-permanent, but that kind of job is usually pretty vulnerable to changes in funding - it might not be "renewable" forever. There's also just the fact that a lot of jobs are seasonal because of, you guessed it, seasons! It might not make sense to do certain work in the "off-season," and so it's unlikely to be steady year-round.
However - this is not to say these positions don't exist! They absolutely do, especially in higher education, & for really seasoned field workers. The accepted "track" for this kind of work is usually that you work a bunch of seasonal field jobs & volunteering while you are a bright young maniac, and settle into more permanent jobs as you get older - and maybe you spend a little less time in the field. To be candid, though, everyone's path looks different! There's really no one size fits all.
#i did not succeed in not writing a novel but hopefully this answers your question a bit!!!#impalaparkedat221b#asks#beckett.txt#dirtbag tag

Large Num-Num
(carissa macrocarpa)
Not to be confused with num-num (carissa bispinosa)
Also known as natal plum or amathungulu
Often grown in coastal areas, the large num-num is native to southern Africa. The flowers of this species bloom throughout summer and autumn, together with its oblong, plum-resembling red fruits which are used in pies, jams, jellies, and sauces. The fruits are said to taste similar to cranberries and are often used as a substitute for them. Carissa macrocarpa contains latex and because of the similarities to other plants with milky sap it's often thought that the other parts of the plant are poisonous. According to the University of Pretoria this is not true and they have classified the species as harmless.
🫐 Reblog to share a fun fruit and to increase sample size! Check out even more interesting fruits in the list of all polled fruits. 🫐

help me decorate my tree
choose a decoration and write me a message I'll get to read on christmas.
then create your own tree and tag me so I can leave you a message as well, if you want!
I'm not much for christmas, myself, but we can all use some solstice/end of year cheer.
no pressure tagging lots of people: @kookicat @jacobdegrominator @jack-the-bear @darkfinch @the-tomorrow-road @thevalkyriewarrior @happybean17 @trivalentlinks @themagnificentmx @therantygeek @fablesrose @onceuponaroast @argylepiratewd @tombombadilsboots @impalaparkedat221b @feckyeslife @jwatsons

Hi. I wanted to tell that it turns out that the AB3080 bill isn’t exactly like the infamous KOSA bill in actually. It’s more about companies in California than small internet users.

mmm. I’m willing to believe the ab3080 bill isn’t like the kosa bill but considering the concerning bills that have been pushing lately I can’t say i don’t have my suspicions about it.
either way thanks for letting me know

Your return, well, it may have succeeded ...
But inside of you, something still pleaded;
That he'd still be there,
Waiting in his chair;
For as long as your exile had needed.

The plan is spelled out, A to Zed
You can see it all inside your head;
But still you have doubts ...
How will this work out?

Since many of us don't read A-Z as "A to Zed", (including me) I decided to spell it out 😉 for ease of rhyming. Forgives me.
