I know there aren’t many of us on this hellsite who can actually remember Imola 1994 firsthand. If anyone gets triggered please scroll on, I won’t be offended.

You see for years my memory of that weekend has been foggy, blurred by years of documentaries and footage I didn’t see at the time, clouding the few clear memories I had of it, to the point it no longer made sense. I’d always put it down to being young. Yet I could tell you clear as day who replaced Senna at Williams and the number of their car (David Coulthard and 0, because Senna’s car had been number 1 and it seemed disrespectful).

However somehow an 8 minute documentary jogged the true memory to the surface and explains why some parts are so clear and others like frosted glass.

Back in 1994 they didn’t televise practice sessions and I admit it was maybe 15 years later before I even knew Barrichello’s had had a crash on the Friday, which to this day I still can’t understand how that was the none fatal crash.

I remember watching qualifying, I remember seeing Ratzenberger crash, although all we saw was the car spinning to a stop. I remember looking at his head slumped to the side and no movement and somehow just knowing. It’s only now I realise that I still to this day always look to see a drivers head move after a big crash.

I don’t remember anything else from the Saturday other than being insistent in all my childish sensibilities that the race shouldn’t go ahead on Sunday.

I remember when I found out the race was going ahead I didn’t want to watch it. I can’t remember what I did, but I remember changing my mind after the start and walking into the living room and Dad saying “now Senna’s hit the wall”. I remember sitting down and watching the ambulances and medics from a distance on the coverage as Murray Walker tried to keep the broadcast going (we now know he knew already what had happened simply down to the behaviour of Dr Sid Watkins).

I remember being incredulous that they were going to restated the race. Young as I was I knew it was wrong, now I would say disrespectful, naive and gave no consideration to the drivers and teams and what they had been through that weekend. Watching the restart, when there was another crash and cars were spinning everywhere I walked away and I think at the point my memory edited itself as self preservation, hence why it’s never been clear since.

I found out later on the news that Senna had also died. Years later, that members of the crowd had been hurt from flying debris on the restart and mechanics had been hurt in the pits during the race.

What still makes me sick to my stomach 29 years later, is that as a child I knew on Saturday what the FIA and F1 should do. Abandon the race weekend. Yet every accident just resulted in them carrying on. Everything after Barrichello’s crash on Friday seems avoidable.

Sadly I had no such premonition of Suzuka 2014 and was sat watching live, though thankfully what was televised was a car going off and disappearing behind a tractor. The only true footage of that came from fans.

I don’t really have any memories of the 1994 season after Imola. Yet I remember seeing Schumacher win both his Benetton World Titles. Im making this post more so as I’ve been trying for 29 years to piece together what I saw at the time and what I saw later. Now I thought it best to write it down Dammed if I know why it resurfaced tonight at 2am.

Ce 1er mai 1994 restera à jamais gravé dans nos mémoires. Depuis 26 ans maintenant, nous avançons malgré ton absence. Tellement de choses ont changé en 26 années. D’autres champions ont explosé les records de la Formule 1. Mais aucun n’est parvenu à égaler ton niveau d’excellence. Tu restes, même pour les meilleurs, l’exemple à suivre.

Ta famille poursuit le travail que tu as commencé pour aider le plus défavorisés et les enfants au Brésil. Les Senna font vivre ton oeuvre. Ta bonté et ta générosité sont toujours présentes même si tu es de l’autre côté du chemin...

D’autres figures emblématiques de la Formule 1 nous ont quittés entre temps. Rien que l’an passé Charlie Whiting et Niki Lauda ont rejoint le paradis de la Formule 1. Je suis certaine que tu leur as réservés un accueil chaleureux.

Tu nous manques. Chaque jour. A chaque grand-prix, ton étoile brille au-dessus de l’asphalte. Aujourd’hui plus que jamais nos regards sont tournés vers le ciel. Nos esprits revivent ce maudit week-end à Imola. Et nous n’oublions pas Roland Ratzenberger, la première victime de cette hécatombe. 

Aujourd’hui plus que jamais, je me souviens du 1er mai 2014, dans la courbe de Tamburello. 14h18. Nous étions des milliers rassemblés là pour te rendre hommage. Un pesant et puissant silence a régné. Le même qu’au moment de l’impact. Jules Bianchi était là aussi. Sans savoir que quelques mois plus tard, il serait auprès de toi et des autres légendes de la F1.

Ayrton, tu nous manques. Chaque jour. Mais ton existence terrestre a rendu meilleures tellement de vies. A commencer par la mienne. Alors aujourd’hui, une fois de plus je veux te dire merci.

F1-maailma järkyttyi vappuna 1994 ajetun Imolan osakilpailun tapahtumista, joista ehkä kirkkaimmin muistetaan Ayrton Sennan kuolemaan johtanut onnettomuus. Tämä viikonloppu pakotti F1-sarjan johtoa miettimään lajin turvallisuusseikkoja sekä tekemään tarvittavia muutoksia, jotta vastaavanlainen ei enää toistuisi.

Tässä videossa kerron Sennan kuoleman lisäksi myös muista tuon kyseisen viikonlopun synkistä tapahtumista, sekä kerron miten F1-sarjan turvallisuutta on parannettu vuosien saatossa. Aion myös kertoa, millä tavoin kuolema on sarjaa koskettanut Imolan kisaviikonlopun jälkeen.

Durante los entrenamientos del viernes, Ruben Barrichello sufrió un aparatoso accidente en la ‘Variante Bassa’ a 225 km/h. Ese accidente sólo tuvo como consecuencia para el piloto brasileño una nariz rota y un brazo escayolado. El sábado, durante la clasificación, hubo otro accidente con menos fortuna. Roland Ratzenberger falleció por culpa del llamado efecto látigo que producen las colisiones. Hoy en día, esta muerte se hubiese evitado gracias al HANS. El accidente de Ratzenberger afectó a Ayrton Senna que pensó incluso no competir durante la carrera. Con un talante sombrío, finalmente el mito brasileño sí tomó la salida desde la que fue su última pole position.

14h17, Tamburello, 1er mai 2014. Nous sommes des centaines à nous recueillir dans cette maudite courbe qui t’a arraché à nous. Nous sommes des centaines d’anonymes, mais également des pilotes de renom comme Gerhard Berger. Imaginez le bruit d’une foule telle que la nôtre. Et imaginez qu’à 14h17 un silence religieux s’est abattu sur notre assemblée. Pas un bruit, tous unis dans la douleur, l’émotion et le souvenir. Les larmes ont coulé, mais les coeurs ont aussi vibré de cette union: 20 ans après, Ayrton Senna continuait à nous faire vibrer. 

Je ne doute pas que ce même sentiment anime les centaines de personnes qui sont à Imola aujourd’hui pour marquer le 25e anniversaire de sa disparition. Je suis unie à vous par l’esprit. Depuis 25 ans, et pour le reste de ma vie, chaque année à 14h17 ce 1er mai, mon coeur s’arrête de battre quelques secondes...

Un Héros pour tout un pays

3 jours de deuil national. Voilà qui laisse imaginer ce que représentait Ayrton Senna pour le Brésil. Pour permettre aux millions de fans de faire leur deuil, l’Etat a décrété 3 jours de deuil national. 

C’est le 4 mai 1994 que Magic a rejoint sa patrie pour la dernière fois. Sa dépouille, depuis l’aéroport de Sao Paulo, a été applaudie par des milliers de Brésiliens. Une véritable marée humaine s’est formée le long du cortège pour saluer une dernière fois son héros, celui a porté haut les couleurs d’un pays en souffrance, celui qui a donné une autre image du Brésil, un Brésil talentueux, fort et combattant. Celui qui s’est investi pour aider ses concitoyens... 

3 jours de deuil national donc, pour dire au revoir à Senna. A ma façon, je me suis aussi accordée ce deuil national. Les jours qui ont suivi la disparition d’Ayrton ont été terribles pour l’adolescente que j’étais. Mais c’est également une période qui m’a aidé à me forger, à décider de mon avenir... Peu de personnes m’ont comprises. Mais cela m’était égal. Et aujourd’hui encore, mon coeur saigne en voyant ces images.
