Images and Words by Dream Theater (Released July 7th, 1992) Dream Theater’s sophomore album with new vocalist James LaBrie defines the bands image, sound, and even their carrer as progressive metal pioneers. After their first release in 1989 entitled “When Dream and Day Unite”, the band hired a new vocalist to take the role of Dream Theater’s frontman position. They chose James LaBrie from the glam metal band Winter Rose after receiving an audition tape from him to join the band. Little did they know, he would impact the band severely and take them to new heights in their music career. The heaviness in such symphonic and orchestral works of art is what make this album and the band stick out among the metal and progressive community. John Petrucci’s stomach busting guitar riffs, Mike Portnoy’s unbelievable drumming, John Myung’s technical and precise bass playing and Kevin Moore’s virtuosic keyboard playing was missing the piece of LaBrie’s insane vocal range and harmonic ingenuity. The band was able to record and release their most commercial album to date with most of their well-known songs off of this album. Each song just as crazy as the last. It’s the ultimate mind-boggling album that you won’t be able to get over with the very unusual time signatures, complex melodic and harmonic structures and over-the-top rhythmic experience.
