I think glen or glenda is elevated through time and context -- 

the time being that this is a good insight into how people were talking about trans identities at the time. it’s framed through a psychiatrist talking about transvestites, it’s got a lot of pathologisation, it uses old words for intersex, it’s Very Very Insistent That Transvestites Are Not Homosexuals. you can see the cracks in how transness is talked about, because then it’s also trying to use a sliding scale from “people who actually use an alter ego and just need some good psychiatry to be fixed” to “extreme cases of transvestites” who are actually heterosexual women -- the way it’s depicted is that this other character enjoyed doing housework early in life and was then “revealed” to be intersex... 

it also contains a segment that is racist, but carries within it an idea of almost understanding something about gender outside of western norms (it deals with “men in other cultures who wear colourful masks and makeup in order to attract women” and it is as you can probably glean from this description very unfortunate in wording and framing)

between that racist segment and the discussions of intersex as a “form”? of transness and the pathologisation of transness as a whole, it’s very easy to draw threads from western-medical ideologies about gender to todays politics, including and especially limitations that come from appropriation of intersex lives and non-white-western culture, and especially how these were furthered through the (white, male) medical communities of the time being considered the sole “experts” about how one should talk about trans people and gender and sex as a whole. no wonder we’re so muddled now! there’s a lot of damage to untangle!

historically I think very important to be learning about, because one can see how ideals about “woman” and “man” were very racialised and also very much about “correcting what was wrong” (whether what was wrong was in fact some past trauma that was being dealt with through crossdressing, or what was wrong was your body)

the neat thing I think is that it did take pains to stress that not everybody would want gender affirming surgery, which was increasingly not a popular idea in the medical community, because above all they really wanted this to be a “fixable problem” type deal, where someone would be corrected into the opposite sex and then take on all the acceptable roles of that sex (using sex here because I am mocking the idea of the innate biological desire of women to do housework as a way of being able to tell that someone is a legitimate trans woman)

the context is the personal part of the story about “glen/glenda” played by ed wood, who of course was a transvestite and so you can’t help but see the script (also by ed wood) as akin to “different from the others” -- if more exploitation film in style -- a plea for tolerance that’s using medical language as a form of authentication

there’s real gold nuggets in this movie, especially in its depiction of what we now would call transphobia as ill-fitting in the modern society of 1953 (sigh)

least strong moment was that it ended with “glen” transferring the “glenda” persona into (his?) now-wife, barbara, on advice from the psychiatrist (yeah, it’s just as messy as it sounds) and the movie in this case affirming that good ol’ heteronormativity would fix “him” (literally calling barbara his mother, sister, wife, and glenda, so she no longer gets to be barbara I guess? it was very odd, and came a bit outta nowhere)

most strong moment was bela lugosi using his magic powers to poof someone’s gender, thank you bela, we owe you!

also was personally into the choice of bela lugosi, even if he wasn’t always used uh... in ways that made sense. they were clearly trying to imbue horror tropes into what is definitely not a horror movie, at one point invoking frankenstein (yaay, susan stryker), but where he really worked was in the marrying of the ideas of horror-that-is-non-acceptance with the... I guess magic? magic-that-is-horror-but-good of gender affirming surgery?

Okay. I first wanna say that I fucking love the child’s play series. Even seed. These movies were my childhood and i love how wacky they got. When the chucky show came out I loved the series even more.

Episode 1 was interesting to me enough that I watched more. I loved that there was a gay main character in this horror tv show. Everything was fine until Jake saved Lexi from falling. That’s when it all went to shit

Lexi is one of the most insufferable characters I’ve had the misfortune of seeing in a television show. She could not be any less interesting or annoying if the writers tried. Giving her that drvg add1ction shit in s2 was the most bullshit way to make us like a character.

Like, I’m sorry? That your family is dead? Join the rest of the group?

She felt like such a unneeded character that only got relevance later on because her sister is a psycho.

S2 was an entire mess I really don’t even wanna talk about. Missed opportunity imo. Could’ve been great. Then it wasn’t. Only mf I have a shit about was Andy. I don’t even remember the ending to be honest.

S3 was at least better that 2, which isn’t saying much. Though I will say i wasn’t a fan of seeing Jake and Devon get cockblock like 4 times. Or seeing Lexi give such a shit about her sister that it lead her to date the presidents son, giving us a boring ass relationship and cringy ass scenes. And I’m sorry, I know ghost are technically real in this universe cause chucky is.. alive still. But seeing them interact with people and be poorly green screened blue dumb asses wasn’t enjoyable in the slightest.

This show truly should’ve been an anthology series. Cause Fuck Jake.

Jake is such a boring character later on in the show. Like we cared more about lexis sister than Jake.. the main character. I’m glad Jake got possessed in the finale, it’s what I needed. Jake content. Him reconnecting with his dad, zacks surprisingly good chucky impression?, and him being in the spotlight was what I wanted to see. Sadly, they forced all that into 1 episode, just like Nicas character for this season. Ohhh nica. I’m so sorry girl.

Jake, Devon, and Lexi being turned into dolls in the end wasn’t actually that bad. I wanted them to be dolls tbh (Jake and nica especially). But they’re so fucking ugly im not sorry.

Id get into my hatred for how glen and Glenda turned out.. but that’s a whole other essay I can write.

Overall. This show was bad. I’m sorry but it was, I’m surprised fans.. like it? There’s a lot of good stuff i like, but it’s so shit I can’t even forgive it.

also i have to note if you did split glen/da in to two people (like at the end of seed of chucky and what im guessing it will be like in chucky s2 (no spoilers pls im watching it weekly on portuguese tv)) then they wouldnt be genderfluid anymore?? the original one said "sometimes i feel like a boy sometimes like a girl" and if you split them into well. boy and girl. well idk they could both still be gendaflooid to keep things somewhat in canon. Glenda shot up from the bed they were sleeping on, they had that dream again.. "Ughh..that damn dream again..what does it mean?..." They groaned, they got up and left the room. "

They saw nica and kyle sitting and chatting "hey" nica said to them with a smile. Glenda smiled back " hey nica, can i talk to u in private?" Glanda asked "uhh sure" nica replied

"We're just gonna chat for a bit, kay?" They said to kyle, she nod her head and glenda and nica head to the bedroom

Once inside glenda shut the door

"So what do u wanna talk about?" Nica asked "well..." Glenda hesitated "i-i wanna talk to my dad.. Is that ok? It wont be long i promise.."

Nica looked down, she didn't wanna do it but after kyle, glen and glenda help her. Its the least she could do

"alright fine..but make it quick"

Glenda nodded, they took out there pocket knife and cut they're hand. Then showed it to nica

Glenda watched in silents as her father gained control of nicas body

Chucky started at his child in silence "glenda..that was u sweetheart.." He said

"Wh-what..?" They said. "yeah, it was u, u were amazing. I was so proud of u!! Ur first kill..i was so proud" Chucky said with a chuckle. "Mom she..she lied..shes a liar.." Glenda said, they're fist shaking with anger "SHE LIED ABOUT THIS! SHE LIED ABOUT U! SHE LIED ABOUT EVERYTHING!!" They yelled, tears started streaming down they're face. "Hey! Hey!! I know..i know ur upset..it was fucked up what she did.." Chucky said, he placed his hand on Glenda's shoulder, trying to comfort them "we'll show her.. We'll make sure that bitch suffers" he said, he pulled his kid into a hug. Glenda hugged they're father back.

Even if they're mother was a liar, someone not to be trusted, at least they have their dad now..

chucky s205 live reaction

ok so, technically 204 is still my favorite episode this season. (and i wish i live reacted to the other ones) but HOLY COW ep5 is a riDICULOUS wild ride. and this is probably the most BLASHPHEMOUS warning for many spoilers ahead!

First up Good Chucky is still a ridiculous concept and I don’t buy it. i’m on team Devon/Lexy. (esp since on a meta level Good Chucky loses the fun of evil Chucky.) But Don is hella creative cuz i’m sure we were all wondering whether or not it could be a thing and im living for that too.

But that Good Chucky vs Buff Chucky fight? HILARIOUS and EPIC!!!! even though i was watching with my eyes half closed cause i really dont like chucky’s looks lol.

Anyways then FUCKIN JENNIFER IS STILL ALIVE? The “and switch and switch and switch” thing actually makes sense now and this episode made Bride & Seed better lol.

OH AND FUCKIN MEG GETS KILLED in a highly unrealistic way but i can forgive it bc its Jennifer Tilly acting camp as hell. i swear if she (Jennifer the IRL actress) is actually a drag queen, i wouldnt be surprised. 

AND THEN COMES THE MOST BLASHPHEMOUS PART OF THE EPISODE. yada yada Devon/Jake fighting about Chucky, Father Bryce is homophobic & makes Devon read the bible. AND DEVON CHUCKS THE BIBLE AT THE CROSS LMFAO LMFAO LMFAO. (I love how sassy Devon is this season. he’s got a bit more of a personality)

THEN FUCKIN JAKE, A NONRELIGIOUS GAY TEEN, AND NADINE, ANOTHER UNUSUAL TEEN, FUCKIN’ BAPTIZE THE GOOD CHUCKY DOLL IN THE CHAPEL. OMG i was shocked and laughing the entire time. i am WAITING for religious people to watch this part of the episode and be HORRIFIED. lolololololol.

AND THEN THE FUCKIN NUN SEES BUFF CHUCKY RISE AND ACCEPTS HIM AS JESUS. IF THAT DOESNT POKE FUN AT CHRISTIANS, I DONT KNOW WHAT IT IS.

anyways now that were back to Glen & Tiffany.... fuck i really hope Glen is NOT taking Tiffany/Jennifer to Nica/Glenda/Chucky...

XD he's not the best expressing his feelings but hes' very proud that Glen has cultivated something that helps him reach out to others who understand him. You know the next generation is always better and brighter thanks to @cornerofhell for her help in all of this

I’m watching glen or glenda for the first time and it’s fascinatingly more direct than I expected it to be. some of the ways it describes transness (at the time “transvestites” as a catch-all term) is quite aligned with thoughts today -- mainly the idea that some people are looking for gender affirming care and others aren’t, although not phrased in modern ways/not with an understanding of many kinds of gender and expression

and of course things that I don’t agree with or that would be talked about very differently today, but it is incredibly earnest in its intentions

im really opinionated on seed being terrible in all regards (like aside from the bad writing and general transphobia and RAMPANT transmisogyny in the final act) so i didnt want to see glen/glenda come back like at all but aside from me being forced to watch them experience like an afterschool special level hokey microaggression i do legitimately have to admit that mancini clearly cared. like they were like as good as they could have been for a rewrite of the character that refuses to retcon anything from the single worst ch.ilds pl.ay film

theres a lot of unique and fun stuff about the way theyre written this season i like that they genuinely took the binary out of the character which also helped deal with the Transmisogyny Issue from the first film. glenda still being a bit more impulsive and quick to jump to action than glen made sense and was no longer a stomach churning man-in-a-dress horror trope moment. i like that they gave their character a bit more depth. i like the direction they took with them only hazily remembering their early childhood. genuinely like this might be because my bar was set to the fucking floor but i have very few bad things to say about how glen and glenda are written in chu.cky the series compared to them in seed

this does however get muddled by the fact that tiffany is my favorite character and i just outright hate the direction theyve taken with her so much. jennifer tilly is still eating it up ig but tiffany was literally better written in the worst film in the series than she was in season 2 of the show. idk it just kind of hurts my heart. im glad kyle came back im glad shes working with the twins thats genuinely so neat.

final thought is the they them license plate is really really really really REALLY fucking FUNNY.

I came across this blog on accident but Mod's art style is adorable- but unfortunately I know next to nothing about the Chucky franchise so. Would Mod or the twins be willing to give a lil crash course on how they came to be + their backstory (and apparent trauma) ?

Ok first of all thank you so much!!! I can give you a little crash course. So slight warning of spoilers?

First we gotta start off with their parents!

The Chucky franchise all started when serial killer Charles Lee Ray (or Chucky) was shot by the cops and used voodoo (WHICH I DON'T USE IN MY AU! I'm very much white!) to transfer his soul at the last minute into a Good Guy Doll.

10 years and 3 movies later, he's brought back by his girlfriend (or fiance) Tiffany Valentine. See, the night Chucky 'died' Tiffany found a ring on their bedside mantle, and believed Chucky was going to propose.

He was not. In fact, when she brings it up, the fucker laughs at her. Tiffany, fed up with his bullshit, throws him into a crib that she would have used for their future kids, and locks his ass in it, along with a bride doll to put salt in the wound.

He breaks out, kills her, and puts her soul into the bride doll.

Later on they've made up and are so happy that Chucky proposes his love to her and asks her to be his bride. She cries and says yes, and they then proceed to fuck.

THAT'S WHERE GLEN AND GLENDA AND MY HEADCANONS COME IN

See near the end, the movie is very Bride of Frankenstein-ish, so a badly wounded Tiffany realizes they belong dead and stabs Chucky. They fight and Chucky stabs Tiffany in the stomach.

Neither of them know that she's pregnant at the time.

See at the very end, Tiffany GIVES BIRTH to an adorable widdle baby.... And then she dies.

You may be confused by 'baby'. See, in my headcanon, Chucky had been doing the chant to transfer souls, and when he stabbed Tiffany, it didn't affect them... It affected the twins.

Both the twins are in the same body.

NOW TRAUMA!!!

A british ventriloquist named Psyches had been visiting New Jersey at the time and came across the doll/baby creature.

He then proceeded to fuck the babies' minds UP. From a young age 'Shitface' (That's what he called them) was not only kept in a rat cage, but they were hardly fed, hardly able to go outside, and were constantly berated.

Mind you, this took place from infanthood to six years old.

One day Shitface saw an ad for a movie on TV of Chucky and Tiffany. Automatically in their eyes (and the 'Made in Japan' mark) they were their parents.

So they escaped Psyches, got the hell outta the UK, and stowawayed on a flight to California to find the movie studio where Chucky and Tiffany would be.

Needless to say by accident, they bring Chucky and Tiffany back to life within their movie doll forms. Chucky makes fun and Tiffany is very gentle until they discover that the child is theirs, to which Chucky faints and Tiffany accepts with open, loving arms.

NOW the gender stuff.

See, the child doesn't really have a 'gendered' look. So (after killing someone to the poor kiddo's shock) they ask them what they are.

The kiddo, being six, has no idea.

So they take the kid's pants off and there's.... nothing. So. Chucky and Tiffany proceed to fight about if their child is a boy or girl, and therefore call them Glen and/or Glenda.

Later on Glen decides that they are both and are genderfluid!

This also ties in to Glen's dislike of killng. They don't like it. They're just a cinnamon roll.

That is until later on when the stress of Chucky and Tiffany constantly fighting on their gender causes them to snap, and Glenda takes over.

She's dressed all prim and proper, makes puns galore, and enjoys slaughter with glee, so much so that it genuinely scares Chucky and Tiffany.
