**i am 30 hours into da4 at the time of writing this post. i just finished the seige at weisshaupt**
oh dragon age the veilguard, how i have mixed feelings about you
idk who thought it was a good idea to hire someone who has absolutely no experience making fantasy rpgs and almost no experience making games period as one of the lead directors. its extremely obvious.
the best way i can put this is that this feels like a game that was made for a younger audience, a demographic that was not the original or majority of the fanbase. if corrine busch wanted to make a more “accessible” game, she should have worked on a different or original title (no im not talking about the difficulty choices)
this is a 15 year old franchise with a huge fanbase. i think its okay if people need to do some hw before playing.
and the other one? john epler, having him as a director was effectively useless. as a former qa employee and cinematic designer, he wasnt the right fit for the role of “making sure it felt like dragon age”
when it comes to plot, its solid. i love the lore reveals, but this is like you took thedas and made everyone on your side abject “good.” everyone here uses therapy speak, and there is no conflict. even if you piss a companion off, there virtually no difference in how they treat you like it feels like disapproval doesnt matter
what happened to the game that let me tell off a homophobic clergy woman? the game where a mage defended the circle? the game where you can PUNCH a companion?? sera was one of my favs from dai bc she was a mean lesbian, (and now everyone is passive and playersexual. snore) da is so impactful because of its complex and nuanced characters.
i want companions to feel like real people, not archetypes. in some ways da4 feels like a step back with character interactions. the nuance is gone here.
rook and the team is abject good, you cannot be evil, mean, or morally gray. you cant be bitchy, you are good, you are the teams therapist. i think this hurts the narrative and imerssion. i think the player should be able to actually craft a personality for rook, and not have the devs morals thrust unto you.
this game is so afraid to be problematic that it ends up turning something that could have been the best in the franchise, into an at times mediocre game.
the visually stunning graphics, stylized and saturated art style, and intuitive + fun combat mechanics, and lore /reveals/, keep me playing, but i cant help but roll my eyes when rook or the companions talk like they watched a bunch of pop psychology videos on tiktok.
edit: something else that actually truly drives me insane about this game is the hand holding. you will watch a cutscene that very obviously tells you what to do next and what will happen next, as soon as its over, rook and your companions all seem to have dialogue telling you want to do. this is my biggest, and imo most valid criticism of the game.
you’ll enter an area thats obviously a puzzle, and you destroy the crystals or turn a mechanism or destroy blight, and you get more dialogue counting how many more things you need to destroy, or tell you what to do despite the mere visual of the puzzle making it obvious what it is you need to do.
i hate it when games treat you like an idiot. these devs dont have any faith in the players intelligence to figure out very simple things.
if the dialogue is not plot relevant or if its not relationship building, it is unnecessary. stop telling me what to do, i know what to do.
i’ll probably make a separate post about how i despise the way trans narrative is handled and how corny and dumb the dialogue choices for that are.
i love that the option is there, i wanted this to be part of the game since dai has a trans male npc, but can i like … be normal about it? it feels inauthentic and i personally dont think the actual word “trans” belongs in a fantasy setting. come up with something else. it pulls me out of the world, it is immersion breaking. it makes it feel less medieval fantasy

15. Lycoris Recoil. - a lot of you could argue on how this one is not GAY but i could spend two days defending its gayness and no one will convince me otherwise. there's a reason why Chisato and Takina have become one of the favorite couples of the last years as long as they appeared and with only one season. this one is full of comedy, girl assasins, inmaculate action, beautiful animation and ITS GAY! lmao istg
16. Mobile Suit Gundam: the Witch from Mercury. - when ppl say its Utena in space is bc thats exactly what it is lol. this past season has brought a lot of good entries but this one is the jewel of the crown OO jesuschrist. okay okay so i watched the new alien movie with my family last night (ive only seen the first movie all the way through and seen a majority of the second one and thats pretty much all ive seen of the franchise SO) and i thought it was pretty good.
BUT, i have opinions on the end of the movie and more specifically the final monster, and ive been rotating ideas in my head all day so i need to get it out so im not just continuously ranting about this to myself. so im putting all of that under a read more cause i have a lot to say and want to avoid spoilers for people who havent seen the movie yet (note i only watched the movie once, and i would be the first to admit i have a bad memory so i might be misremembering things) (and i also cant remember any of their names, and i cant be assed rn to look them up lmao)
(also note, i havent read any of this over,so theres probably spelling errors and me repeating myself. i just needed to get this out of my head)
i havent really seen anyone elses opinion on the final monster guy but tbh,,,, i hated it?? like i understand the whole scary idea of 'it looked human, but something was off' (and thats just a trope i personally dislike for no reason lmao) but i feel like if youre making that be what makes your monster scary, give it a new spin? like, i literally missed the first major scare with that monster because i turned to make a joke to my sibling ('oh its a person!') i hate that the design was just a tall gangly pale human that you cant see the eyes of, because ive feel like thats something thats been done SOOOO many times before and ive gotten desencitised to it
and just,,, that coming after the heavy hitters of the facehuggers and the xenomorph was just a huge let down! (i will admit that showing the tail getting longer in each shot, was pretty cool) having a tall gangly pale man being the main monster just isnt scary anymore,, you could have done something original and something super new and scary. youre showing THAT right after the fucking xenomorph?? as the final monster??? its scary cause its tall and its eyes are shadowed over??
my whole thought was if they just leaned into the horror of pregnancy, it could have been so cool??? or something along those lines??? like take notes from RE8!! the baby!! in the doll ladies house!! that shit was discusting and terrifying and awesome! instead of having the monster be an adult male, have it be a scary babyyyy
or like take notes from the boss lady(?) from the second chapter of fate!! have the movie play out the same way, but have the main character hear the other lady screaming from off screen and then have her rush over, and gasp shes not in the cryopod! and have th mc panic and look around, but then sees her friend, seemingly perfectly fine, holding a baby in her arms.
theres some really cool ideas that come from the idea of the umbilical cord not being cut. like with the idea of the lady seemingly perfectly normal holding her baby, and that (those two combined) being the new monster. your still very human looking friend, and the monster that shes now attached to. thats not your friend anymore.
the horror of the idea of a monster wearing the face of a friend you couldnt save thats now hunting you down. her baby, the idea of which got the both of you so happy and excited just a few hours earlier, (who shes still connected to, still holding in her arms) being the monster that also ended up corrupting her that now is hunting you
or even if you decided that you wanted to keep the tall pale man as your new monster, give it a new introduction!!! imagine the first time we see it. it just failed a stealth attack against the mc because its still attached to the dead weight of its mom that its dragging behind it via the cord. and then we can have a visual scene where we can see the monster evaluate the situation (failed a stealth attack) find the problem (not stealthy, dragging dead weight behind it that i has no control over, no way to make it useful) and then find a solution (cutting the cord itself, or for a more visceral scene, destroying the body). so we can see it thinking and rationalizing and making a plan and following through. (and its casual disregard of humanity. of its own mother)
just like,,, fear of pregnancy, of childbirth, of babies. i feel like babies, as something to be scared of, should be used more in horror. that'd be cool.
or like,,,, change the ending up,,, have the movie do the same kind of twist the first alien movie did. introduce the audience to a character, audience assumes that character is the main character, and then at some point, kill that character and have a new character become the mc!!!!! like keep the final three people alive at the end of the movie, but do a twist where the mc dies and the other lady has to find a way out! have her not inject the prometheus fire thing, but have it be known that she lost time in that ship, so something could have happened to her, and play around with the idea of her having new trauma about having that baby. like dont say anything outright in the movie, but like, have it end with her not knowing what she wants to do now thats shed not fearing for her life. does she now have fears about something alien growing inside of her, fears of something mutating the baby? give her complicated feelings on what she want to do with that baby. like,,, would she even want to go through with giving birth after literally seeing a baby alien burst out of the chest of her friend. complicated feelings of 'maybe she didnt get away from romulus scott free, and somehow her baby was affect by it'
theres a post ive seen floating around tumbr about horror movies reflecting common fears at the time,,, playing around with pregnancy being the main horror in a movie,,,, isnt a bad idea,,,,,
#im not gonna tag this with the movie. i dont care if people see this or not#this is legit just my thoughts that i *had* to write down so it would get out of my headddddd#anyway. i had fun watching the movie. honestly it was very pretty lmao#just realllllllllllllllllllllly wish the monster was different :(#fun fact! this was the first horror movie ive ever seen in theaters#and im just upset i didnt get scared enough to jump at anything :((((#i guess ask to tag? honestly im not sure how far this post might get with my <20 active followers lol

ok but picture
bisexual saber gilles dealing with internalizied homophobia
i leave the concept to you
u know, imma be real with you anon, generally i dont do a ton of aspects of like internalized [x]phobia because in my fantasy world theres no institutionalized homo/transphobia because its my fantasy and i, a gay trans, wanna imagine living my best life in these verses lmao (also bc fate is an extremely queer franchise character-wise, its numerous and myriad faults with that very aspect aside, so i imagine just everyone in the wholeass throne is bi or gay) HOWEVER
that being said
gilles prob would (and i am referring to saber, if u think caster gives a single fuck other than going ‘haha sin yaaaay’ then idk how to help u) not only have a level of internalized homophobia but in himself in particular feel hoo boy Not Good about any sort of any attraction he has to Anyone, even if he were the straightest dude ever to straight. just because he, dude hates himself, thinks hes a curse, refuses to let himself be anywhere near the day care squad despite canonically liking hanging out with kids in the way a normal dude just likes being sunday school lead, tells master that if he starts being weird they should not only kill him but force him to kill himself, gilles feeling himself remotely inclined to actually be around another person in anything other than a business- or war-driven situation is
[saber gilles lying flat on the ground, playing a funeral dirge on the kazoo, going ‘oh god i do not Deserve to be Around A Person, that in itself is a Sin and i am God’s Least Favourite Mistake, god forbid that person is male, who the fuck am i, caster? am i caster now? should i die?’]
[the ghost of caster, pointing and laughing at him]
anyways tl;dr, it’s unlikely i’d write internalized homophobia as a central focus of anything because im not super into using homophobia, internalized or otherwise, as a plot point/motive just because i myself am gay and like my fantasy worlds where that particular irl risk doesnt exist y’dig, but it is likely that if it ever came up it would be part of a grander, very likely and very canon, aspect of Saber Gilles Hates Himself And Everything He Does
this is!! not to say!! like “wow anon bad ask dont send me things gosh” because 1. i love people sending me things esp about my less frequently appearing muses bc i just assume any time gilles shows up on this blog it’s against all of my followers’ will 2. i will never turn down the chance to talk about anything with anyone wrt my muses even if its a subject im not planning on using 3. you make a very valid point so like u ARE right
so dont think its me saying something like that okay QAQ i love to see an ask i love to see other peoples thoughts

hi again dia! happy first day of december ❤️💚 i wanted to ask you what, in your opinion, are the 5 most underrated dcoms? i remember you saying before that you've watched all of them so i'd love to hear your opinions 😊 - 🎅🎁🎄
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH secret santa you are so good! asking me all the best questions 💜
okay so i literally had to make a list of all the dcoms i consider underrated and then narrow down a top 5. theres lots of dcoms that i love, but that i think got the right amount of attention and care (like lemonade mouth and the teen beach movies, for example), so this list just focuses on ones that deserved more hype for their quality level.
5. The Cheetah Girls: One World (2008)
okay so even as i type this i feel like a hypocrite. i have only watched this movie one time. BUT i can acknowledge that its one of the most criminally underrated dcoms ever, tons of people didnt watch it simply because raven wasnt in it. thats why i avoided it as a child, and i didnt get around to watching it until i did my big dcom binge in 2016. and it was so good. theres a really long post floating somewhere around tumblr full of specifics on why its actually the best cheetah girls movie (my favorite is the second one purely out of nostalgia), so to paraphrase some points from that post:
its a solid example of cultural appreciation, rather than appropriation, as the girls go and learn about bollywood and indian culture together
the indian characters arent treated like props or unimportant sides, they get their own agency and storylines that are important
the songs are good!!!
basically this movie was overlooked and slept on even though in terms of role modeling and social value, and just like the first two cheetah girls movies it was important and impactful.
4. Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure (2011)
okay so as someone whos very neutral and occasionally negative-leaning towards the hsm franchise (mostly bc its overhyped and not really representative of all dcoms), i was pleasantly surprised by sharpays fabulous adventure. this is another one that i know lots of people skipped right over and dont hold with as much esteem as the main hsm franchise, and that doesnt sit right with me.
i do not agree with the “uwu sharpay was the real victim in hsm” arguments bc in their efforts to look galaxy brained the people who say that overlook the fact that she was a rich white woman who used her power and status to exercise control over opportunities that should have been fairly and freely available for all; they were not “making a mockery of her theater” in the first movie, they were literally just kids who wanted to try out a new school activity that everyone was supposed to be allowed to participate in; and despite allegedly learning her lesson and singing we’re all in this together with everyone at the end of the first movie, she literally showed no growth in the second movie as she fostered an openly hostile environment and favored troy so heavily that it literally cost him his friends, all as part of yet another jealous plan to take things away from people who already have less than her. she was NOT the victim in the main franchise, and she did not seem to exhibit any growth or introspection either.
and that!!! is why sharpays fabulous adventure was so important. in focusing on sharpay as the main character, they finally had to make her likeable. they did this by showing actual real growth and putting her outside of her sphere of influence and control. we saw true vulnerability from her, instead of the basic ass “mean girl is sad bc shes actually just super insecure” trope (cough cough radio rebel), and this opened us up to finally learn about and care about her character. throughout the movie we see her learn, from her love interests example, how to care for others and be considerate. she faces actual adversity and works through it, asking herself what she truly wants and what shes capable of. and in the end, when she finally has her big moment, we’re happy for her bc she worked hard to get there. she becomes a star through her own merit and determination, rather than through money and connections. this movie is not perfect by any means, but it is severely underrated for the amount of substance it adds to sharpays character.
3. The Swap (2016)
okay i know im gonna get shit for this but thats why its on this list!!! just like sharpays fabulous adventure, its not perfect and definitely misses the mark sometimes, but it deserves more attention and love for all the things it did get right!
the swap follows two kids who accidentally switch bodies because of their emotional attachment to their dead/absent parents’ phones. and while i normally HATE the tv/movie trope of a dead parent being the only thing that builds quick sympathy for a young character, they definitely expanded well enough to where we could root for these kids even without the tragedy aspect. we see them go through their daily struggles and get a feel for their motivations as characters pretty well. as a body switching movie, we expect it to be all goofy and wacky and lighthearted, but it moves beyond that in unexpected ways.
the reason the swap is on this list is for its surprisingly thoughtful commentary on gender roles. its by no means a feminist masterpiece, and its not going to radicalize kids who watch it, but it conveys a subtle, heartfelt message that deserves more appreciation. the characters struggle with the concept of gender in a very accurate way for their age, making off-base comments and feeling trapped by the weight of expectations they cant quite put their finger on. we watch them feel both at odds with and relieved by the gender roles they are expected and allowed to perform in each others bodies, and one of the most interesting parts of the movie to me is their interactions with the other kids around them. as a result of their feeling out of place in each others environments, the kids inadvertently change each others friendships for the better by introducing new communication styles and brave authenticity.
the value of this movie is the subtle, but genuine way it shows the characters growing through being given the space to act in conflicting ways to their expected norms. ellie realizes that relationships dont have to be complex, confusing, and painful, and that its okay to not live up to appearances and images. jack learns that emotional expression is good, healthy, and especially essential to the grieving process. one of the most powerful scenes in the movie comes at the end where, after ellie confronts jacks dad in his body, jack returns as himself to a very heartfelt apology from his father for being too hard on him; the explicit message (”boys can cry”) is paired with an open expression of love and appreciation for his kids that he didnt feel comfortable displaying until his son set an example through honest communication. this is such an empowering scene and overall an empowering movie for kids who may feel stuck in their expected roles, as it sets a positive example for having the courage to break the restrictive societal mold. for its overall message of the importance of introspection and emotional intelligence, the swap is extremely underrated.
2. Freaky Friday (2018)
this is my favorite dcom, and probably my favorite movie at this point. ive always assigned a lot of personal value to this movie (and i love every freaky friday in general), for the message of selfless familial love and understanding. i know i can get carried away talking about this topic; i got an anon ask MONTHS ago asking me about the freaky friday movies and i wrote a super super long detailed response that i never posted bc i didnt quite finish talking about the 2018 movie. and thats bc on a personal level, i cant adequately convey all the love i have for this movie. so i will try to keep this short.
first lets state the obvious: the reason people dont like this movie is bc its not the lindsay lohan version. and i get that, to an extent, bc i also love the 2003 version and its one of my ultimate comfort movies, and grew up watching it and ive seen it a billion times. i even watched it a couple days ago. but the nostalgia goggles that people have on from the early 2000s severely clouds their judgement of the wonderful 2018 remake.
yes, the 2018 version is dorky, overly simplistic plot wise, a bit stiff at times, and super cheesy like any dcom. the writing isnt 100% all the time. the narrative takes a couple confusing turns. the song biology probably shouldnt have been included. i understand this. but at the heart of it all, this movies value is love. and its edge over all the other freaky friday movies is the songs.
on a personal level, the movie speaks heavily to me. i cried very early into my first viewing of the movie bc i got to see dara renee, a dark-skinned, non-skinny actress, playing the mean popular girl on disney channel. that has never happened before. growing up, i saw the sharpays and all the other super thin white women get to be the “popular” girls on tv, and ultimately they were taken down in the end for being mean, but that doesnt change the fact that they were given power and status in the first place for being conventionally beautiful. so, watching dara renee strut around confidently and sing about being the queen bee at this high school got to me immediately. and in general, the supporting cast members of color really mean a lot to me in this movie. we get to see adam, an asian male love interest for the main character. we have a second interracial relationship in the movie with katherines marriage to mike. ellies best friend karl is hispanic. and we see these characters have depth and plot significance, we see them show love, care, and passion for the things they value. the brown faces in this movie are comforting to me personally. additionally, the loving, blended family dynamic is important to me as someone in a close-knit, affectionate step-family.
but on a more general level, this movie is underrated for its skillful musical storytelling and the way it conveys all kinds of love and appreciation. in true freaky friday fashion, we watch ellie and katherine stumble and misstep in their attempts to act like each other. its goofy and fun. but through it all, the music always captures the characters’ intimate thoughts and feelings. the opening song gives us a meaningful view into ellie and katherines relationship and the fundamental misunderstandings that play a role in straining their connection. ellie sings about how she thinks her mom wants her to be perfect, and her katherine sings about all the wonderful traits she sees in her daughter and how she wants her to be more open and self assured. this is meaningful bc even as theyre mad at each other, the love comes through. the songs continue to bring on the emotional weight of the story, as ellie sings to her little brother about her feelings of hurt and abandonment in her fathers absence. the song “go” and its accompanying hunt scene always make me cry bc of the childlike wonder and sense of adventure that it brings. for the kids, its a coming of age, introspective song. for katherine who gets to participate in ellies body, its a reminder of youth and the rich, full life her daughter has ahead of her. she is overcome with excitement, both from getting to be a teenager again for a day, and from the realization that her daughter has a support network and passions that are all her own. today and ev’ry day, the second to last song, is the culmination of the lessons learned throughout the movie, a mother and daughters tearful commitment to each other to love, protect, and understand one another. the line “if today is every day, i will hold you and protect you, i wont let this thing affect you” gets to me every time. even when things are hard and dont go according to plan, they still agree, in this moment, to be there for each other. and thats what all freaky friday stories are ultimately about.
freaky friday 2018 is a beautiful, inclusive, subversive display of familial love, sacrifice, and selflessness, and it is underrated and overlooked because of its more popular predecessor.
1. Let It Shine (2012)
this is another one of my favorite dcoms and movies in the whole world. unlike the other movies on this list, it is not the viewers themselves that contribute to the underrated-ness of this movie. disney severely under-promoted and under-hyped this movie in comparison to its other big musical franchises, and i will give you five guesses as to why, but youll only need one!
let it shine is the most beautifully, unapologetically black dcom in the whole collection. (i would put jump in! at a notable second in this category, but that one wasnt underrated). this movie was clearly crafted with care and consideration. little black kids got to see an entire dcom cast that represented them. the vernacular used in the script is still tailored mostly to white-favoring audiences, but with some relevant slang thrown in there. in short, the writers got away with the most blackness they were allowed to inject into a disney channel project.
the story centers on rap music and its underground community in atlanta, georgia. it portrays misconceptions surrounding rap, using a church setting as a catalyst for a very real debate surrounding a generational, mutlicultural conflict. this was not a “safe” movie for disney, given its emphasis on religious clashes with contemporary values. it lightly touches on issues of image policing within the black community (cyrus’s father talking about how “our boys” are running around with sagging pants and “our girls” are straying away from god), which is a very real and pressing problem for black kids who feel the pressure (from all sides) of representing their whole race with their actions. its a fun, adorable story about being yourself and staying true to your art, but also a skillful representation of struggles unique to black and brown kids and children from religious backgrounds.
on top of crafting a fun, wholesome, thoughtful narrative and likeable protagonists, let it shine brought us what is in my opinion the BEST dcom soundtrack of all time. every single song is a bop. theyre fast, fun, and lyrically engaging. “me and you” is my favorite disney channel song of all time due to its narrative significance; i will never forget my first time watching the movie and seeing that big reveal unfold onstage, as a conversation and a plot summary all wrapped into a song. the amount of thought and care that went into the music of this movie should have been rewarded with a level of attention on par with that of other musical dcoms.
if disney channel had simply cared about let it shine more, it couldve spanned franchises and sold songs the way that other musical dcoms have drawn in success. i would have loved for a sequel that explored and fleshed out cyrus’s neighborhood a little bit more, and maybe dipped into that underground scene they caught a glimpse of. i wanted a follow up on the changed church community once cyrus’s father started supporting his sons vision. i want so much more for these characters and this world than disney gave them in just one movie.
for its bold, unabashed representation of blackness and religion, subtle, nuanced presentation of race-specific issues, strong, likeable characters, and complex, thoughtful songs, let it shine is the most underrated dcom.
and because i made a full list before i started writing this post, here are some honorable mentions:
going to the mat (2004)
gotta kick it up! (2002)
tru confessions (2002)
dont look under the bed (1999)
invisible sister (2015)
#this took me embarassingly long to write#i cant help myself i literally think about this all the time#youre doing a great job with these questions secret santa!#dcoms#disney channel#answered asks#anons#gcwca secret santa#Anonymous

@superohclair oh god okay please know these are all just incoherent ramblings so like, idk, please feel free to add on or ignore me if im just wildly off base but this is a bad summary of what ive been thinking about and also my first titans/batman meta?? (also, hi!)
okay so for the disclaimer round: I am not an actual cultural studies major, nor do I have an extensive background in looking at the police/military industrial complex in media. also my comics knowledge is pretty shaky and im a big noob(I recently got into titans, and before that was pretty ignorant of the dceu besides batman) so I’ll kind of focus in on the show and stuff im more familiar with and apologize in advance?. basically im just a semi-educated idiot with Opinions, anyone with more knowledge/expertise please jump in! this is literally just the bullshit I spat out incoherently off the top of my head. did i mention im a comics noob? because im a comics noob.
so on a general level, I think we can all agree that batman as a cultural force is somewhat on the conservative side, if not simply due to its age and commercial positioning in American culture. there are a lot of challenges and nuances to that and it’s definitely expanding and changing as DC tries to position itself in the way that will...make the most money, but all you have to do is take a gander through the different iterations of the stories in the comics and it’ll smack you in the fucking face. like compare the first iteration of Jason keeping kids out of drugs to the titans version and you’ve got to at least chuckle. at the end of the day, this is a story about a (white male) billionaire who fights crime.
to be fair, I’d argue the romanticization of the police isn’t as aggressive as it could be—they are most often presented as corrupt and incompetent. However, considering the main cop characters depicted like Jim Gordon, the guys in Gotham (it’s been a while since I saw it, sorry) are often the romanticized “good few” (and often or almost always white cis/het men), that’s on pretty shaky ground. I don’t have the background in the comics strong enough to make specific arguments, so I’ll cede the point to someone who does and disagrees, but having recently watched a show that deals excellently with police incompetence, racism, and brutality (7 Seconds on Netflix), I feel at the very least something is deeply missing. like, analysis of race wrt police brutality in any aspect at all whatsoever.
I think it can be compellingly read that batman does heavily play into the military/police industrial complex due to its takes on violence—just play the Arkham games for more than an hour and you’ll know what I mean. to be a little less vague, even though batman as a franchise valorizes “psychiatric treatment” and “nonviolence,” the entire game seems pretty aware it characterizes treatment as a madhouse and nonviolence as breaking someone’s back or neck magically without killing them because you’re a “good guy.” while it is definitely subversive that the franchise even considers these elements at all, they don’t always do a fantastic job living up to them.
and then when you consider the fetishization of tools of violence both in canon and in the fandom, it gets worse. same with prisons—if anything it dehumanizes people in prisons even more than like, cop shows in general, which is pretty impressive(ly bad). like there’s just no nuance afforded and arkham is generally glamorized. the fact that one of the inmates is a crocodile assassin, I will admit, does not help. im not really sure how to mitigate that when, again, one of the inmates is a crocodile assassin, but I think my point still stands. fuck you, killer croc. (im just kidding unfuck him or whatever)
not to take this on a Jason Todd tangent but I was thinking about it this afternoon and again when thinking about that cop scene again and in many ways he does serve as a challenge to both batman’s ideology as well as the ideology of the franchise in general. his depiction is always a bit of a sticking point and it’s always fascinating to me to see how any given adaptation handles it. like Jason’s “”street”” origin has become inseparable from his characterization as an angry, brash, violent kid, and that in itself reflects a whole host of cultural stereotypes that I might argue occasionally/often dip into racialized tropes (like just imagine if he wasn’t white, ok). red hood (a play on robin hood and the outlaws, as I just realized...today) is in my exposure/experience mostly depicted as a villain, but he challenges batman’s no-kill philosophy both on an ethical and practical level. every time the joker escapes he kills a whole score more of innocent people, let alone the other rogues—is it truly ethical to let him live or avoid killing him for the cost of one life and let others die?
moreover, batman’s ““blind”” faith in the justice system (prisons, publicly-funded asylum prisons, courts) is conveniently elided—the story usually ends when he drops bad guy of the day off at arkham or ties up the bad guys and lets the police come etc etc. part of this is obviously bc car chases are more cinematic than dry court procedurals, but there is an alternate universe where bruce wayne never becomes batman and instead advocates for the arkham warden to be replaced with someone competent and the system overhauled, or in programs encouraging a more diverse and educated police force, or even into social welfare programs. (I am vaguely aware this is sometimes/often part of canon, but I don’t think it’s fair to say it’s the main focus. and again, I get it’s not nearly as cinematic).
overall, I think the most frustrating thing about the batman franchise or at least what I’ve seen or read of it is that while it does attempt to deal with corruption and injustice at all levels of the criminal justice system/government, it does so either by treating it as “just how life is” or having Dick or Jim Gordon or whoever the fuckjust wipe it out by “eliminating the dirty cops,” completely ignoring the non-fantasy ways these problems are dealt with in real life. it just isn’t realistic. instead of putting restrictions on police violence or educating cops on how to use their weapons or putting work into eradicating the culture of racism and prejudice or god basically anything it’s just all cinematized into the “good few” triumphing over the bad...somehow. its always unsatisfying and ultimately feels like lip service to me, personally.
this also dovetails with the very frustrating way mental health/”insanity” or “madness” is dealt with in canon, very typical of mainstream fiction. like for example:“madness is like gravity, all it takes is a little push.” yikes, if by ‘push’ you mean significant life stressors, genetic load, and environemntal influences, then sure. challenge any dudebro joker fanboy to explain exactly what combination of DSM disorders the joker has to explain his “””insanity””” and see what happens. (these are, in fact, my plans for this Friday evening. im a hit at parties).
anyway I do really want to wax poetic about that cop scene in 1x06 so im gonna do just that! honestly when I first saw that I immediately sat up like I’d sat on a fucking tack, my cultural studies senses were tingling. the whole “fuck batman” ethos of the show had already been interesting to me, esp in s1, when bruce was basically standing in for the baby boomers and dick being our millennial/GenX hero. I do think dick was explicitly intended to appeal to a millennial audience and embody the millennial ethos. By that logic, the tension between dick and Jason immediately struck me as allegorical (Jason constantly commenting on dick being old, outdated, using slang dick doesn’t understand and generally being full of youthful obnoxious fistbumping energy).
Even if subconsciously on the part of the writers, jason’s over-aggressive energy can be read as a commentary on genZ—seen by mainstream millennial/GenX audiences as taking things too far. Like, the cops in 1x06 could have been Nick Zucco’s hired men or idk pretty much anyone, yet they explicitly chose cops and even had Jason explain why he deliberately went after them for being cops so dick (cop) could judge him for it. his rationale? he was beaten up by cops on the street, so he’s returning the favor. he doesn’t have the focused “righteous” rage of batman or dick/nightwing towards valid targets, he just has rage at the world and specifically the system—framed here as unacceptable or fanatical. as if like, dressing up like a bat and punching people at night is, um, totally normal and uncontroversial.
on a slightly wider scope, the show seems to internally struggle with its own progressive ethos—on the one hand, they hire the wildly talented chellah man, but on the other hand they will likely kill him off soon. or they cast anna diop, drawing wrath from the loudly racist underbelly of fandom, but sideline her. perhaps it’s a genuine struggle, perhaps they simply don’t want to alienate the bigots in the fanbase, but the issue of cops stuck out to me when I was watching as an social issue where they explicitly came down on one side over the other. jason’s characterization is, I admit and appreciate, still nuanced, but I’d argue that’s literally just bc he’s a white guy and a fan favorite. cast an actor of color as Jason and see how fast fandom and the writer’s room turns on him.
anyway i don’t really have the place to speak about what an explicitly nonwhite!cop!dick grayson would look like, but I do think it would be a fascinating and exciting place to start in exploring and correcting the kind of vague and nebulous complaints i raise above. (edit: i should have made more clear, i mean in the show, which hasn’t dealt with dick’s heritage afaik). also, there’s something to be said about the cop vs detective thing but I don’t really have the brain juice or expertise to say it? anyway if you got this far i hope it was at least interesting and again pls jump in id love to hear other people’s takes!!
tldr i took two (2) cultural studies classes and have Opinions
#wow this was a hot fucking mess#i tried to be organized but my thoughts weren't coming out super well#again anyone interested please feel free to jump in or correct me at any place you feel like#i die on the ''jason todd would be treated horribly by fandom if he were a character of color' hill tho#i could go on about 1x06 until im blue in the face but that's the uhh overview. the executive summary.#dc titans#i need meta tags and shit for this show#god help me in too deep#finding the meta side of fandom was a GIFT tho i love this shit#so excited

May Reading Wrap Up
I'm actually really proud of myself. I finished 13 books last month. Spent a lot of extra time away from screens and focusing on my mental health so I burned through way more than I normally would. So anyways, here's my reviews. - Also please understand that these are just my opinions and if I shit on your favorite book I'm sorry that I didn't enjoy it as much as you. Also, also Im terrible with character names.
Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor ⭐⭐⭐
I actually started this book at the end of April but didn't finish it til May 1st so whatever, here it is. This books is a YA urban fantasy novel about a girl with a double life. She spends half her days studying art in Europe and the other half running errands for a tooth collecting wish monger. I don't want to say a whole lot more because I dont want to spoil anything important about the plot. So, I'll try to be vague. Let me start by saying this story is amazing. I loved the writing and the world. I rated it so low solely because I can't stand the two main characters and it really dragged down what would have otherwise been an amazing novel. So yeah, great book but its a preference thing. Also took points off for the insta-love but not really insta-love shit. Idk. I have a lot of mixed feelings about this read even a month later. Gonna read the second to see if maybe my hatred of the two mains was just a fluke.
3/5 Stars
Spellbound by Rachel Hawkins
⭐⭐⭐
This is the third book in the Hex Hall trilogy. Not much to say about it. It was a meh ending to an overall pretty good series. 3/5 stars. Moving on.
The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw
⭐⭐⭐
Realizing now how many of my reads this month were pretty middle of the world. Hopefully next month will be filled with 4 and 5 stars. Anyways, this book was honestly a struggle for me to finish and Im not sure why. It's a YA mystery magical realism story about a tiny coastal town that is cursed by the spirits of 3 sisters who were suspected of witchcraft and drowned 2 centuries prior. Because of this, every year the sisters return from the sea to take the lives of teenage boys by luring them to the sea. We follow the life of kind of meh and standard YA girl #1. She meets a strange non tourist boy and hires him to work in the lighthouse her family owns. Her dad randomly disappeared years ago and her mom is a loon. So yeah... I dont know. I kind of felt like this story was hot garbage in places. I usually dont have any trouble with the suspense of disbelief in magical realism stories but this one just had too many plot holes. Like, I get morbid stuff becomes tourist attractions but why wouldn't someone have stepped in and evacuated the town if at least 3 teenage boys die there EVERY SINGLE YEAR without fail? I honestly feel like the FBI or some other government agency would have cleared the place out after the first 20 or so deaths. There was also the whole MC can see the ghosts of the girls possessing people but chooses not to tell anyone? Like, I get it. You dont want people to label you a freak or think you're crazy but come the fuck on. You live in a tourist trap where people flock to watch local teenage males wash up on shore and you really think the authorities arent going to take you up on the help? It wasn't an awful book by any means. It was well written and extremely descriptive. Just had major beef with some of the details. Anyways, I wont say much more so I don't spoil the whole book.
3/5 Stars
An Enchantment of Ravens by Maragret Rogerson
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Finally, I get to talk about one of my favorite reads of the month. I love anything to do with the Fae in my YAfiction and this was literally everything I wanted in a Fae novel. It takes place in a town called Whimsy, a humanish town in the world of Faerie. The fae cannot do any Craft, or what we would consider craftsmanship. Art and humans who can do it well are very precious in this world because the Fae can't ever do it themselves. We follow the adventures of a girl who has been commisioned to paint the portrait of the Autumn King and the chaos that ensues. Let me just start by saying this is one of those insta-love situations where I feel like it's genuinely ok. I might be making excuses because I loved the title so much but whatever. It's explained and I accept it. Also, I realize that Gadfly had a lovely description but my brain willl not let me picture him as anything but Mr.Waternoose from Monsters Inc.
5/5 Stars
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
⭐⭐⭐
This book started out so good and went downhill very quickly. It follows the story of these two magicians who were fated by their Master's to one day fight to the death. There were so many things I loved about this book only for the last 100 pages to just take a firey dump on my face. I loved the setting and the majority of the characters. The supporting characters were so deep and interesting that I almost cared more about them than I did Ceilia and Marko (Im proabably wrong and I dont feel like googling but I think that was his name) . I don't know. I don't want to complain about anymore meh books.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
Went into this book expecting to hate it. I usually don't like contemporary love stories but this had major City of Ember meets The Giver vibes and it just appealed to that 14 year old girl in me again. That seems to happen with a lot of dystopian utopia stories. Anyways, story is about a girl who lives in this town where when you hit a certain age you are brought to a place and told who the government has chosen for you to marry. She is matched with her life long best friend and all is well. Except that her little Get To Know Your New Husband microship thing showed her two guys instead of just one. And lots of bullshit ensues. I honestly think I rated this so high because I enjoy the world and not so much whats actually happening to the kids. Like, I loved the idea that art is harmful so the government chose 100 acceptable pieces and thats all these people know. I loved the brutality of the government in general. I can't say much more without spoiling some of the twists but geez did it have me hooked. I'm going to be started the second one soonish, though my TBR for June has gotten intense so we will see.
4/5 stars
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I cannot say enough good things about this book. It is so fucking good! Not going to rant about it or anything because y'all just need to go read it immediately.
5/5 stars
Would give it every star in the sky if Im being completely honest.
Reign of the Fallen by Sarah Glenn Marsh
⭐⭐
Got sucked into this book by the cover and honestly that was the best part of this book. Its about this world where necromancy is pretty highly regarded and used to resurrect the royals after they die. The only downside is that if a living person ever lays eyes on the resurrected person's skin then they turn into these horrible monsters. Maybe it's just me but like that absolutely does not seem worth the risk. Plus, in order to bring the person back, these reapers have to go into the death world and bring the spirit back. And it's HELLA DANGEROUS. So like, WHY? Anyways, there is this stupid underlying love story that I absolutely wasn't invested in. This just all around was not a good book.
2/5 stars
Monster High by Lisi Harrison
⭐⭐
Little known fact~ I'm obsessed with Monster High and Ever After High. So yeah, I realize this wasn't targeted to me as an adult but even going into it with an open mind I was disappointed. Granted I didn't read the description of the book prior. I just saw this franchise I love and grabbed it. First, if you are a fan of the mini series and the movies do not read this. It doesnt follow the cinematic canon and I think that was my biggest problem with it. Frankie's character was all wrong and I hated the whole"Normy" cast. Was really excited for these but I definitely won't be continuing the series. I don't even want to torture myself with seeing how they manage to ruin my sweet baby Draculara.
2/5 stars
Unhinged by AG Howard
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I can't say enough good things about this series. This is the second book in the trilogy and it was a fanatstic bridge book. It had me engrossed through the entire audiobook. Morpheus is still everything. If you loved Splintered I would highly reccomend continuing.
5/5 stars
Truthwitch
⭐⭐
Have had this on my TBR for a while because of how many Booktubers have hyped the series. Buy, was I disappointed. I was soooooooooo bored. Maybe it's because I don't really enjoy this type of fantasy or maybe it was just the slower paced story but I just slugged through this book. Both of the main female characters were bland to me and I didn't care about their friendship. The world was cool but not enough to keep me invested. Just wasn't my cup of tea.
2/5 stars
Paranormalcy by Kiersten White
⭐⭐⭐
Picked this up because of how much I loved The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein and it didn't meet my expectations. It follows this girl who works for a paranormal gorvenment group. She has a special ability that makes her really useful to them so they are trying to groom her basically. They capture this changeling and she befriends him and there is an overarching plot that I just didn't get invested in. The friendship between the two main characters was pretty much the only thing that I enjoyed in this title. The mother figure was insufferable and I just didn't really understand the whole org that they worked for in general. Not an awful book but not fantastic.
Solid 3/5 stars.
The Siren by Kiera Cass
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Going to preface this by saying I might be biased. I love Kiera Cass and have enjoyed almost everything she has written. That said, this wasn't nearly as good as The Selection series but it was a pretty good stand alone novel. It about a girl who becomes a siren on her deathbed and spends the next 100 years serving the sea by luring people to their deaths. After doing this for 70 years, she falls in love and pretty much ruins everything. Loved the characters, especially the male lead. The insta love was a little pet peeve of mine but the love interest was so sweet and genuine that I was willing to overlook it. Pretty good read if you dig supernatural romance.
4/5 stars
June holds the Ghibli-a-thon but also lots of holidays for my family so we will see how much I actually get read. So far my tentative TBR is 5 books but we will see where the days take me.

film watch day 30: A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge
Nightmare on Elm Street is not my favourite slasher franchise. while i can appreciate the first one for being a masterwork of horror, i have really no interest in subsequent sequels, and dont particularly like Freddy Krueger as a character after he stopped being a threatening villain and just became a joke. all that said, Nightmare on Elm Street 2 is fucking great.
spoilers for this movie ahead, which im bothering to warn about because i do sincerely recommend it, but i also like, want to talk about this in-depth so im gonna have to give away the plot.
like along with being honestly creepy and suspenseful and having a very likeable main character, i love NoES 2 because the running years-old argument of ‘is NoES 2 gay?’ finally got an answer a little while ago. it is! and while i reject the concept that you need an author to sign off on a gay reading of a text to give it legitimacy, theres something kind of great still about knowing that it was intentional. NoES 2 is a story where Freddy Krueger is a metaphor for homophobia, acting as conversion therapy for a gay teenager.
so NoES2 is about Jesse, whose family has just moved into a house on Elm Street. of course, he begins having vivid nightmares about a terrifying man called Freddy Krueger. however instead of just wanting to kill Jesse, Freddy is actively trying to drive Jesse to kill so that he can take over Jesse’s body, forcing the two to battle over which of them gets control.
lets talk about the gay subtext, which is the only thing i care about in any movie ever. so Jesse is a young dude whos starting to figure out his sexuality. his parents know something is up, but they mostly just want him to toughen up and be normal. he has a girlfriend, but hes uncomfortable being intimate with her and keeps pushing her away so he can hang out with his male friend. hes a nice kid and a good person. he is very transparently gay-coded. his actor, a guy called Mark Patton for whom i have enormous fucking respect and who quit Hollywood acting because he (rightly) felt the industry was intolerant of him as a gay man, influences this to a large degree. his personality shows through in his performance, and i think thats a large part of the reason why people latched onto this as a gay movie so early; its incredibly easy to identify with and connect with Jesse.
so Jesse is a young man trying to come to terms with his sexual identity, but someone takes offense to that, and thats where Freddy Krueger comes in. when Freddy initially asks Jesse to become like him, to kill for him, Jesse obviously refuses. seeing that Jesse will not willingly be what he wants, Freddy decides to forcibly convert him to his way of being.
NoES2 has a pretty low body count for a horror movie; the only two character deaths in the film are, in turn, a teacher at Jesse’s school rumoured to be gay, and Jesse’s male best friend who he was emotionally confiding in. even later in the movie, a guy approaches the Freddy-possessed Jesse and sympathetically asks him if he needs help, tries to offer support. Freddy tosses him to the side, removing yet another person from Jesse’s life. Krueger quite literally is destroying the male connections in Jesse’s life; he sees connections with them that he doesnt want, so he systematically erases them in order to keep Jesse isolated and in fear.
Jesse, who his girlfriend admits has been nervous and unsure of having an intimate relationship, is encouraged by Freddy during one of the few times they kiss, Freddy actively taking over his body in that moment and trying to force him to take it further. Krueger toys with Lisa, the girlfriend, but doesnt actually try to kill her, only chasing and harassing her while he dispatches with the men around Jesse without care.
theres a lot of talk about identity in this film, in an abstract way. a lot of people talk about this film being gay because look! this guy has a man inside him lol! but i think the focus is wrong there. Freddy is a violent intruder to the natural order of Jesse’s life; he wants Jesse to be frightened and alone, because thats what makes him powerful. he wants Jesse to hide and repress his personality, lose all sense of himself, and be in Freddy’s own mold. Freddy encourages Jesse to kill, to cut off the people in his life, to be like him; a violent misogynist who treats the people around him with contempt and has shallow, controlling relationships with women.
during the climax of the movie Freddy succeeds in taking over Jesse’s body. “Jesse’s dead, I’m Jesse now” he repeats, as he wreaks havoc in the real world. the way Jesse overcomes Freddy isnt through violent action against him, its by literally breaking through the outside persona imprisoning him and coming out as himself. he destroys the heterosexual outer shell thats controlling him and making him do and say things he hates, and takes control of his life. this is a film about coming out as a powerful force for good.
to see the entirety of the gay subtext in this film you kind of have to just watch it. again im gonna cite Mark Patton’s performance; he brings a huge amount of personality to Jesse and the film wouldnt be the same without him. and theres so many one-liners and eyebrow raising moments that really add to the greater idea that this movie is about a gay teenager, whether or not thats what it says on the box. like, this film for me is an honestly affirming and positive movie, and it makes me wish there were a lot more gay horror films out there. i mean, i wish that anyway, but this is such a weird example of how to do it right in its own way; creating an environment in which the message of the film can so easily be read as ‘coming out is good’.
also the film is just like, fun. its ridiculously campy and its often very silly but the goofiness and the fun tone stop it from getting too bleak, while Krueger himself manages to keep a respectful enough distance that he actually feels like a tangible threat and not someones wacky murdering uncle.
and check out these outfits from Jesse
this is how i dress now. icon.

anime review: boku no hero academia
not gunna lie.. i shit talked the Hell out of my hero. like sooo much shit. i claimed it wasn’t worth the hype that it was lame, bad plot, etc. all b4 actually watching it like a dumbass. oh , how Wrong i was. my hero for anyone new or old to anime is well known and is very big especially for the incredible character design. my hero gets alot of hype and i do thinks its for a reason. shonen anime is probably the most popular and is where the most popular franchises are born aka naruto, one piece, and dbz. and my hero is at the front running for being this generations leader in shonen. although this is not an anime that i cant find faults in , i can find quite a few but this is one of my favorite animes and is definitely worth the watch, now lets get into it.
this shonen like many is about the underdog who can! when 80% of the population has some sort of super human ability known as a quirk izuku midoriya is in minority 20% of people in superhuman society that do not have a quirk. and with the birth of the superhuman powers came the rise of a new profession, heroism. in which people with quirks get licenses to use them to save people. it’s sorta like how kids now wanna be youtubers well thats what being a hero is in this anime. of course midoriya wants to be a hero just like his idol All Might the #1 hero and pillar of peace.
in order to do that he must get into the top hero school in Japan, U.A Academy. with an acceptance rate of less then 2% (or 0.2% i genuinely cannot remember lol) . midoriya is the classic meek bullied kid being pushed around by childhood friends kaksuki bakugou who is loud, angry, and LOUD, and also wants to be a hero. his quirk is explosions that he creates from his palms with his nitroglycerin like sweat.
one day midoriya gets to meet his idol and the series kicks off. midoriyas journey in getting into U.A, viallian attacks, sports festivals., interships, training camps and more!
now midoriya as a main character grew on me. truth me told the first 5 episodes of my hero are Painful to get through, they made me cringe and midoriya cries about 5 times in one 20 minute episode which is exhausting. personally my favorite type of shonen anime protagonist are himbos , aka dumb sunshines. midoriya is not this he’s actually incrediblely smart but he’s so meek it’s annoying and for a while I thought he was the worst choice for protagonist especially with how amazing the side characters are, but he grows on you and it makes sense why he is the way he is and his character development is good. he grows much more confident and sure of himself. he has that naruto talk-no-jutsu vibe about him lol. but overall he’s good, not my favorite character by anymeans in fact i doubt he’d be in my top 5 in this series.
NOW FOR THE BEST PART ABOUT MY HERO; SIDE CHARACTERS (now i am only a mortal so i will only be talking about characters that stand out and add something to the show aka invisible girl is not mentioned neither is tail boy)
bakugou!!!! listen, he is a piece of work. and honestly it took me till season 2 to actually like and enjoy his character. he’s defently different from the normal angry anime boy because he has Zero reason to be angry which sorta adds to the comedy of the show. hes weathly, has two good parents, hes liked and popular despite being somewhat nasty, and he has a cool ass quirk along with being a prodigy at basically everything. his inferiority complex is what he battles the entire show I do feel like his character development was a little too slow, they could moved it along a little bit and not held onto how angry he was for absolutely no reason but again it kind of adds to the charm his character. his design is so beautiful the blonde hair the red eyes he’s great and hes my second fave character. his anger is toward mostly midoriya toward most people hes just loud but he really has a problem with midoriya. a problem he lowkey made up in his head but overall bakugou is a strong character and a different type of hero, he’s the opposite of all might in everyway.
TODOROKI!!!!!! if you dont know who todoroki is and you somewhat watch anime or see anime content on your social media, you are lying. his character design is super well known and is honestly beautiful he’s literally breath taking. speaking of character design let’s leave the Zuko versus Todoroki discord somewhere else I just don’t care let’s leave it alone they both have scars and daddy issues big whoop! they would literally be bffs move on. now that thats out of the way, todoroki is phenomenal, he’s the more silent type but not tsundere at all. we dont see alot of him in season 1 but mainly in season 2, he’s the son of the #2 hero endeavor who despite being a hero is human garbage! his quirk is half cold half hot. essentially he has two quirks one creating ice from the right side of his body and create flames from his left (the coolest and most versatile quirk in the series) his hatred towards his father makes him unwilling to use his fire side. but he gets over it! todoroki i feel definitely got snubbed , i feel like the dimmed him down because of how easily he could overshadow midoriya and honestly my hero could have easily been about todoroki and his journey discovering what kind of hero he wants to be thats how good he is. I cried 4 times during his battle with midoriya. i love todoroki and he is my fave character of the series.
Kirishima!!!!!! his quirk his hardening, he makes his whole body rock hard. i adore kirishima hes is so wonderful as a side character. we really see him shine in s4 during his work study and i love that especially since he was often pushed to the side. he’s also the first person bakugou acknowledes as an equal and friend. his backstory and motivation is really touching and his character design is so fun !! i love sharp teeth boi’s!!!!! and also i dont know they made him so obsessed with being chivalrous and manly but not a misogynist that is like so hard to do and they did it so well. and the fact that his motivation to keep going is a woman and someone who he respects was also so cool. also his hero custome is so cool. he said full chest out !!
mineta, now this is a character that literally everyone hates and granted he’s not my favorite character not even close but I don’t think he’s that bad. He’s the classic pervert classic girl obsessed character. His quirk is literally detaching sticky balls from his head he’s gross but I don’t mind him like all he does is talk like they have an anime character is a straight up harass women which he does sometimes but I don’t know I just don’t get why hes so hated when there are tons of similar character types like him that are worse that don’t get that much hate like I’m not defending him he’s gross but it’s not terrible and he provides comedic relief which is not always funny but it’s there
kaminari! cute shock boy! hes a more digestible and attractive version of mineta, slightly girl crazy but hes fun! hes also friends with bakugou and his quirk electricity but if he over uses it he gives himself brain damage and turns dumb. again hes more often then not pushed aside but hes funny and his personality is awesome and bright.
Iida, someone im kinda lukewarm about? he’s definitely a major side character and gets his own huge moments and out of all the side characters gets alot of screen time. his quirk is engine legs that make him super fast. hes a stick up his ass class rep but he’s nice and way more likeable after the first few episodes
ochaco.....um. shes ok ig, her quirk is making these float. has a crush on midoriya which is fine even though she looks his she could be his cousin dndjd. idk i dont love her type of preppy i wanna be like my crush character type, hinata does it better. but shes ok again lukewarm about her, i definitely like some of the other female characters better but shes not awful. again most shonen animes use female characters as prop to further the male protagonist character along. idk i jus dont like her personality.
froppy!!!! tsu!!! i adore you ! would d word for you!!! i love her so much shes such a cool character and she doesn’t fit into a box in terms of character type. her quirk is frog meaning she can do everything a frog can do. she’s so level headed and smart and witty she really adds something everytime she comes on. she’s just so chill i really appreciate that.
jiro!!! wonderfully talented queen! her quirk is earphone jack! shes just so again chilled and laid back but also super smart and perceptive. sorta tomboyish which is really cool 2 see a different look for a female character.
yayorozu!!!!! my favorite female characters of the show. her quirk is creation, she makes anything she wants as long as she knows the structure. its dope af. shes so smart and responsible and has an awesome sense of self improvement. i do believe in eating the rich but i still love her. shes a natural leader which i love to see and i think she should have been class rep but as always, men have to be in postions of power ...
tetsutetsu!!!!! the only person in class b with rights. hes kind of like kirishimas counter part, he also has a hardening quirk which makes his body into steele. hes jus so Funny and loud and i wish he was in class 1 a he’d be so good. he brings alot of energy and his fight with kirishima was so fun to watch.
miro, again. someone i shit talked b4 seeing what they were about. i honestly thought miro was going to have some evil agenda against my midoriya but he didn’t he was so good so bright his quirk is so cool it’s permeation meaning he can like walk through walls and stuff he’s so cool!!
tamaki!!!!!!!!! I ADORE HIM! SO MUCH!! hes so shy and insecure but wtf so badass with an amazing quirk called manifest meaning he can manifest on his body the different types of food he eats like he eats octopus he gets tentacle arms which means he basically has like an unlimited number of quirks??!! so dope and his character design is so sexy hes my bf
shinso, now his design is very good he reminds me alot of aizawa, and his quirk is insane and i dont know how people like invisible girl, tail guy, fucking mineta got into the hero course but someone like shinso with a brainwashing quirk didn’t, all someone has to do is answer his question and their under his control, literally so useful. he’s a really hyped up character which I find interesting because in the anime manga people don’t come for me he isn’t really showcased which is really annoying because he’s cool and I get what the hype is about but I just wish we saw more of him I think there is in the actual manga but in the anime he makes like two appearances??
AIZAWA!!! hes so ,, hot, idc him a bun forget it.. im .. his quirk... SO DOPE I MEAN TO BE ABLE TO ERASE SOMEONE QUIRK,,? dope af, his tsundere with more dere then anything hes so sweet and genuinely loves his class So Much, they are his babies. his character is super genuine and its so fun to see him and someone like all might working along side eachother just because they are such different people. aizawa is definitely my third favorite character
all might!!! the big man himself! honestly all might is what superman wishes he was, he is just so Nice and caring and just wants to help people thats all he wants to do, hes the only person deemed worthy by stain. he plays such a huge role in the series in a way a mentor/idol really never has 4 me. i love his other version as well its so well designed to be such a contrast to his muscle form.
stain, the best villain on the show, most complex and truly thought provoking and just all in all they did such a good job with his character design and his motives the stain arc was my favorite in terms of villains because my hero really kind of lacks in villians and sure the league does get better but stain has the most like convincing argument and morals like the concept that he wants to purge the fake heroes of the society away is just fascinating because society in the series so overpopulated with heros and just ugh such a good villain and his quirk,, crazy being to paralyze people by tasting their blood wild
dabi!!! aka todorokis brother (thats not a spoiler jus a fan theory that i wholeheartedly believe) his quirk is cremation which he basically has such hot fire that it jus turns everything to ash. aka his character design being him with burns, his body most likely can’t fully handle his quirk. hes so hot ugh literally come on emo boy! but really hes a cool villain and works for the League. I wish we saw more of him which I know in season 4 like toward the end he makes a pretty big appearance but after training camp we don’t see him as much as I wish we did and he’s super famous hyped up character again because his design is so dope. he’d be a good anti hero.
shigaraki!!! he’s actually my fourth favorite character.... you guys ever have that one character that one think most likely thinks is hot, but you do. YES HES CRUSTY BUT STILL SEXY GAMER. if i could just give him a skincare routine...His character is one that got probably the most development I mean we see this bratty childish kind of loser in season one in in season for a re-really see a masterminded plan from him and something truly thought out because I feel like a lot of his plans aren’t thought through and this is one of the first ones that I see truly come to fruition the way he wanted to. I really appreciate that from a villain who can grow because he wasn’t a very convincing villian and he had no motivation to do what he was doing and just seem like a dumb kid but like now after watching him grow he’s really coming into his own and for season five I want to see him continue that growth he’s having.
OK IM SO SORRY THE SIDE CHARACTERS TOOK 80 YEARS THERE ARE SO MANY
now onto my critiques these are MY opinions which literally don’t matter the author/artist is incredible and knows what they’re doing and they don’t have to cater to what I want at all this is just how I thought while watching the anime.
I feel like midoriya is a character that can’t really shine on his. I feel like side characters need to be pushed down and snubbed for him to look cool. and in general I just feel like because of the personality that he has as a main character he kind of struggles to shine unless they dim the light of the other characters because especially in season four midoriya is just constantly pushed and pushed as this end all be all if feels which OK he’s the main character but like was it realistic for some of the things that happen in season four to happen I don’t wanna spoil but if you watched it you know like who defeated who and so on. at least to me sometimes it’s really obvious that they’re pushing for you to have that midoriya is so cool reaction which just seems forced.
I mention this in some of the side character villains but my hero really doesn’t have like super compelling villains with proper reasoning to what they’re doing or maybe we just haven’t seen that yet in the anime but for me the only good villain the whole series was stain. sure the league of villains gets better but they’re seen as a joke for most of the series at least to me like I didn’t really take them seriously just them minus all for one. I feel like they have these major villains but only see them once especially with all for one we saw him once and then if you watch the my hero movie he’s like there for 2.2 seconds as a major plot point but him physically as a villain but I see him once in action and even so I still think stain is a better villain and notice how I’m not mentioning overhaul in this conversation. there was just something beyond villainious about overhaul especially the child abuse. and again he’s someone who was spoiler alert defeated and in one shot kind of way it only took half the season and if you compare him and his organization to the league their miles ahead of the League so why did they get defeated first it just kind of didn’t make sense to me.
I was sort of annoyed when the big three got introduced for my side character analysis I praised two out of the three of them and I love the third member she is incredible and a bad ass I just couldn’t write any more about side characters or else this will never end but did we need the introduction of more students when there are so many in class 1a themselves that just don’t get the light of day especially in season four with Todoroki and Bakugou being absent for most of it.
endeavor doesn’t deserve redemption arc that’s what they’re setting up for now i don’t want it he’s gross he’s a domestic abuser he’s a child beater he’s a child neglecter. he’s gross and I don’t understand how this hasn’t been exposed to the public about how the number one hero beat his wife and kids how we just not know that.
I mentioned this with bakugous character review but I feel like his development was just so agonizingly slow for no reason because it wasn’t this deep-rooted issue it was something he misinterpreted and created this fake narrative in his head about midoriya. and even after they have that big fight and acknowledge each other I feel like there’s still something missing which bothers me because there is no reason one it should’ve taken four seasons when Todoroki‘s deep-rooted issues were solved in a couple episodes basically.
I feel like the series attempted to add romance and then gave up which I think was a smart move just because at the moment there isn’t really a place for it and this is coming from someone who adores romance in anime and I thrive off it but in my hero specifically especially the way they were going to do it with Ocacho was just not it and I really hope they don’t reduce her character even more to just pining over the male protagonist because I’ll be sad because even though I’m not crazy for her I still think she’s a solid character who I don’t want to become just a propeller for character development for the sake of the male protagonist.
things i love!!
the animation is beautiful, it’s so unique and different and just feels really fresh. you can clearly see the movements and can we talk about how well they draw hands? got tier anime hands.
the fighting was the Best ive ever seen in terms of timing, most shonen animes can drag on battles for many many episodes especially dbz, it honestly feels tiring and i love the my hero has the Perfect length to i get all the action and never feel bored or over it. I also enjoy that the anime wasn’t super fillery, and when there was it wasn’t that noticeable that it wasn’t canon.
how everyone is friends really makes me happy especially to see midoriya be so loved and respected by his peers, and everyone views him as an inspiration. to know he was bullied and hated by his class in middle school to in high school having everyone love him enough to make him class rep at first. which I am so glad he stepped down from because it was lowkey cringe that he won djdj.
how rivalry is done is nice because its not a huge major thing, sure everyone is competitive but its friendly and motivating. its not cutthroat.
the dub is really good, ik people shit on dub which is fair. but sometimes the dub hits and there are moments when you wanna watch anime but you have stuff to do so you can’t solely focus on the screen. personally i don’t know why but i had a hard time getting into my hero with sub and had to watch it dub. but if you do like dubbed anime then the my hero dub is solid im sure certain things are said cooler in the sub than dub (aka hqs “dont let me down fellas alright?” jdjdxjxj) but it is a funimation dub which are almost always decent.
the structure of society and the information we get told about heros and the job are soo well done. I feel like I really understand the setting which in fanatasy animes can be somewhat difficult, and everything makes sense and is really normal. they do such a good job making being a hero a normal thing, especially since heroism especially in the western comics is viewed as this big deal that not everyone can do while in my hero its the opposite. i love that.
midoriyas not give up attitude is really endearing, sure most shonen protagonist have this but especially with midoriya being the Biggest underdog to the point where he ruins his body over and over again and still keeps moving. a moments i genuinely loved midoriyas character and fell for him completely was during training camp, when he fight smuscular and still keeps moving despite being Ruined. it’s my favorite right after stains.
i love seeing them train! ik the actual villains are exciting but things like training camp and the creating special moves moment were my favorite.
-
Overall;
i love my hero, it’s quickly made its way to my favorite animes of all time, the characters, plot, and motivations are so good. it’s an anime that makes me feel like I can do anything i set my mind to. I enjoy the fact that it’s an anime that like I feel like there can be a discussion and not one over about whether it’s good or bad because it’s definitely good but more in how things are done the reason things were done how things could’ve been done differently there’s a lot to talk about and I feel like this is a very unique thing because I think with a lot of anime everything is so set in stone and if things were done a different way and it wouldn’t work with my hero there are so many ways things would go which I love. and I also love that there are things that I don’t like about it or that I’m not crazy about and for some reason that makes me like it even more because I feel like again back to the discussion point there’s so much to talk about especially on like Reddit where you can see what other people think and if you’re wrong if you’re right it doesn’t really matter because I think today this is just anime! give it a watch if you are curious you wont regret it!

Okay have some random AF charon thoughts lol
* Randomly headcanon him as asexual and somewhat gender non-conforming. Like, i think he still identifies as male but i just tgought he'd probably be supportive of trans folk even tgough he's normally an asshole to people in general. And i think he'd definately be one for the 'men should be allowed to wear dresses and makeup' philosophy, and probably could go off on quite a long rant about how there's nothing scientific about gendered clothing, don't go bringing my phd into this dammit! Lol.... I dunno really why i headcanoned it exceot 'hey more representation of people like me" + also the motivational value of seeing older lgbt characters and trying to believe that you have a future beyond a life expectancy of 30. And also i guess it kinda makes sense cos rotom is a genderless pokemon, i mean he grew up with a best friend who defied those gender norms so i don't think they would stick to him, even if he was raised in a super traditionalist environment. Also like.. Lol.. I mean.. Part of wanting to write a redemption fic for a villain involves trying to flesh them out and give them some positive traits, yknow? Ehh i just feel awkward about this cos i dont have any sort of solid Proof that this charactet is LGBT, same as how there's no evidence for my nonbinary cyrus or transgirl mars headcanons. WHY DID I RUB MY QUEER LIL HANDS ALL OVER THESE CHARACTERS
* uhh completely randomly i recently wrote up some plans for an amv i wish i could do for charon if i knew how to animate. Like a full on feelsy thing to a sad song about how rotom misses him and how he's changed over the years and generally self indulgent fluff of this unconfirmed stupid backstory headcanon of mine. And its not very fun cos its just a wordswordswords description of stuff i cant draw. But uhh anyway i showed it to two of my friends and i dunno if anyone else wants to see?? Im a bit embarassed but like.. If people are actually interested i'll make more stuff like this with all the other amv ideas i have for other franchises. Who knows, maybe i can learn enough to someday make them!
* another thing i might post more of: The Gremp Test. This is a thing i've started doing to test the choice variety/sexism in videogame character creators. I ask the question "Is it easier to make Galactic Commander Charon from Pokemon Platinum (tm) than to make a non sexualized female character?" (Or someone who isn't stick thin, or a poc character, and etc) Its funny just how many games have enough choices to create wildly specific characters like this yet only lack the choices in certain areas. Hell, often if there's some sort of grandpa option there isn't an equivelant for grandmas! And in Champions Online the sliders go from wispy elf boy to literally the hulk, but those same sliders are disabled and women can only be hourglass shaped. Charon test exposes the cowardice of these developers! (And also gives us loads of funny pictures of charon. Win win!)
* i think if i go thru with that thing of turning my charon headcanons into an oc in an alternate fantasy setting i might go with calling him Nicodemus. Or Erebus? Something equally as fancy as being an obscure moon, lol. And i might just give him a huge poofy hairstyle if he can't have that complicated crescent shaped nonsense. I cant think of an equally weird hairso i'll go for the traditional einstein look. And maybe use that design i once drew of him with a bowler hat and bolo tie?
*also
*did i mention that
*i really like this character
*is once again reminded of how much i lovv the gramps*
Aaaa minor character appreciation why are u my curse….! Thank u loads to that blog cos srsly this is the most fanart he’s had in a year! Everyone’s probably sick of me whining about my faves tho lol
#sorry this is a disorganized midnight post of gramps fandom thank u for reading#i kinda just end up repeating myseld lol?#that feel when u been in a fandom so long with so few other people to talk to that youve#exhausted all topics of conversation

nanoha vivid liveblog: episode 2
When we left off, Vivio was training with her new plushie magical integrated thingy, and Nove had run into our favorite angsty LARPer
the most polite of serial street duelists
gods her name just keeps getting more and more elaborate. Also, is it ever explained where the Heidi part comes from? Or did she just pick a vaguely germanic belkan name.
Ok, those are awesome titles
nove gives zero fucks
fuck yeah! assert the right of your friends to not be defined by their pasts lives. *stares pointedly at einhart*
Also, does nove’s hoodie have an attached tie? bc that is awesome
oh my god einhart
the angst
Oh cool this time the op has lyrics attached
…gay
I’m really glad they kept the whole eye symbolism from OG nanoha (“that girl with the sad but beautiful eyes”), since vivid seems to be taking a lot from it tonally/thematically. It feels very full circle in a nice way.
REALLY GAY
this is honestly just the best summary of nanoha as a whole
she does the foot tap thing! idk why this is a thing in anime, but i’m a fan
hnnng
hey. Nove. Remember that thing you said about her being a kid? Maybe keep that in mind.
the return of the rollerskates
This franchise sure has a thing for leotard and short poofy coats doesn’t it?
Here we have the rare anime phenomenon of a reasonable adult giving sensible advice
But alas, einhart is too emo to hear
Her determination to be in a very different show is adorable
Yeah, I can imagine that trying to drag warriors and the children of important people who have tried to move on and lead normal lives back into fighting would be a hot button for any of the combat cyborgs
The angst, it burns
That said I appreciate the consistent translation as queen, which is more accurate for olivie etc, even though the source material (or at least the random german) used king a lot
dominom pizza
Ok, I know ive been teasing einhart a lot for how wrapped up she is in the past drama, but this is genuinely tragic. She’s a child stuck with all these memories and associated trauma that she has absolutely no way to process or cope with, and so instead she’s just living with all this guilt she inherited, and trying desperately to hold herself above the standards of adult soldiers in a long-ago war. No wonder she sounds so drained and regretful all the time.
Gods. She’s twelve. And just… gods Someone please give this child a hug I mean I know vivio will be there to help soon, but this is painful to watch
But do we get to see her? Do we?
WE DO HELL YEAH
Please please please please give us tia as well I kinda still want to spell her name tea bc that’s the version that I saw when I was younger But consistency and all that I guess
Tia! My favorite of the forwards probably. And she’s looking as good as always.
Come to think of it, she knows a fair amount about feeling guilty and afraid about not being strong enough, and pushing yourself too hard to the point where you collapse and risk hurting others
They’re just girlfriends! (you can’t really see it in a still image, but they turn to look at each other at the exact same time)
ITS HER! I know i get excited about a lot of characters showing up, but I remember reading the Vivid manga as it came out, and waiting every month for scraps of information on Belka, so getting to see Olivie so soon and so much is really cool for me.
Sorry claus, unfortunately you are too male and your romance to heterosexual for this show.
Ok, a side effect of those inherited memories is she talks like a Shakespeare character
Tia tia tia tia!
snort
please keep mildly roasting einhart
The best girlfriend, complete with food
Ok, looking at those photos: a bunch of vivio and her friends, plus one of caro and erio, and one of tia and subaru.
Probably a good thing einhart doesn’t look closely at them just yet
Sister! It just makes me really happy to see them all being family now. Nanoha is the best show for enemies-to-family fluff
Oh so now you spell it teana
Wait, this is subaru’s apartment, yes? So why is it “they” who took her in? Unless Subaru and teana live together... Please let that be true Come to think of, that bed they had einhart recuperating in is way too big for one person…
Nove in a tank top appreciation post
no particular reason, i just like having the two of them in the same picture
this guys nose looks wrong
HA! so it is spelled tea. you can fuck right off with your inferior spelling from earlier
im glad to see tea hasnt stopped snarking at subaru in the past four years
Im a fan of how nove is vaguely tsundere about being a teacher
Im also just a fan of nove in general
thats, uh, sure one way to describe a terrorist crisis
last tea and subaru appreciation post
uhhh
okay then
fate is permanently flustered by her wife
this nerd
The shows commitment to translating all the belkan titles as queen runs into and promptly ignores a bit of a problem with claus ingvalt
I would like to point out that some wiki sleuthing would indicate that the belkan war ended only a hundred years ago, which seems a bit too recent to be shrouded in myth
i completely forgot to listen to the ending last time, so here it is (with lyrics!)
The world reflected in your eyes/looks a little different from the way it had been until yesterday
that is real gay. and also once again a callback to nanofate way back in season one
this whole silhouette martials arts fight is really really cool. and also, once again, really really gay
this is a very pretty visual to leave off on

cause you guys asked for it i bring y'all MORE GAY ANIME!! :D
11. Hina Logic from Luck & Logic. - based on a game, very gay, very cute, and very funny lmao. perfect to watch all at once and end up with a mushy feeling inside
12. Akanesasu Shoujo. - a very eneterteining one with an odd premise oO travelling through other dimensions, love and friendship. and it ends actually GAY lol when first watching i wasnt expecting it ngl,but it was a lovely surprise xD
13. Otherside Picnic. - horror, and when i say horror i mean it lmao. prepare for some disturbing shit. also interdimensional travel and Gay :) what else can you ask for?
14. The Executioner and her way of life. - great story, very nice characters, very gay, very entertaining isekai with some twists oO and this just season one.
Gundam is a franchise with more than 30 years of history and for the first time a female protagonist and also the whole argument revolving a gay love story. as a longtime Gundam fan myself saying that i was excited af is an understatement. on top of that the story is SO FUCKING GOOD! the animation, its dark undertones, THE GAY, like holy fuck. and this is only season 1 of what is gonna be IMO the best anime of the season and all the seasons to come.
17. The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady. - another gay isekai bc thats like the new normal lmao. this one just started airing but its so good lmao purely gay and funny af. go watch it right now! i have read the manga and the novels and you won't be disappointed. lol very worth it!
now speaking of manga, there has been a wave of gay manga about to be animated SOON which has been the highlight of my year LMAO i've read all of these and I CANT FUCKING WAIT im so excited! now watch out for :
18. Im in love with the Villainess. - another gay isekai cause dreams do come true sometimes!. girl dies and its reincarnated on her favorite dating game but she doesn't want any of the male love interest, her gay ass wants the villainess lmao. idk how far the anime is going with the story but i've read the novels and it ends SO GOOD! (airing summer 2023)
19. Whisper me a love song. - music gay manga that also received the green light for animation. very cute, highschool piece of life drama and gay as it can be <3 (airing sometime this year)
20. Yuri is My Job! .- comedy gay manga to be animated this year as well ^^ cute girls, nice storytelling, comedy and of course gay drama! (airing april 2023)
Gay anime recs for that one Annie :)
hii Annie, sorry this took me so long, ended up working til late and then i was dead after lol.
speaking about gay Anime or Yuri as the connoisseurs call it, i've seen them ALL, and im not even exaggerating lmao, i've seen almost every anime in which two girls kiss or end up together. but when ppl think about those is always the same old ones on every list cause for a LONG time those were the only ones aviable until recently that somehow the creators became more committed to these stories and have been giving us quality content. here's where my personal preference interferes .. i only go for happy endings lmao i don't waste my time on depressing shit lmao. life is depressing enough as it is lol. so yeah, lets start from the beggining.
Strawberry Panic. - you've probably heard about this one but is a classic and a master piece for a reason. very light and sweet but also a good share of drama. all girls school, gay for days, great ending :)
2. El Cazador de la Bruja. - the third on a trilogy of non connected pieces about gay protagonists. imo the best of the 3 cause is the one who actually ends on a good place :) and that place is Mexico lmao. extremely interesting adventure story, VERY gay and a easy to watch.
3. Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. - a very special piece, very close to my heart, in which in a course of 3 seasons you get to see the rare occurrence of a relationship between these two girls since they're kids all up to when they get married and acquire a kid lmao plus magic and monsters and all that jazz lmao. te longest of the list but also one of the bests.
4. Assault Lily Bouquet. - one of the most recent entries. very gay, very dramatic but also very short D: again all girls school, everyone is gay, the end lmao
5. Bloom Into You. - cause of course this one cant be missing from this list. IMO the best yuri anime in modern times. easy watch, gorgeous artstyle, school coming of age, actually gay, very good ending, i cant literally praise it enough. and the anime only goes half the way of the original manga. i HIGHLY recommend reading the manga which is finished <3
6. Citrus. - this might be controversial for some but in the core is very sweet and well executed, the manga keeps on going but the anime stops on a really good place. very interesting and over all sexy.
7. Fragtime. - very cute movie about two girls in school who fall in love with each other under weird circumstances. i loved every second of it. my only complain being that it could have been longer D:
8. Princess Principal. - the only entry in here that isn't "explicitly" gay lol or at least not in the conventional way cause the main girls are literally dating in secret. cute, romantic period piece with awesome music and effects. and also still ongoing in the form of movies. if they end up confirming it remines to be seen. but c'mon, this is official art.
9. Yurikuma Arashi. - beautiful work of art from the same ppl behind the classic UTENA. a wnderful representation of the phrase "again but gayer" the story is kinda cnfusing like everything they do lmao but once you really get into it, it slowly consumes your soul.
10. Adachi and Shimamura. - super cute and relatable depiction of ones first crush. light and beautiful with nothing to waste. fuckin adorable man
i have a lot more but i wanted t cut this at ten so i don't overwhelm you. feel free to talk to me about any of these cause id love to revive the experience through new eyes.
