Card Meanings in the new, The Day I Picked Up Dazai art.

Ok so im currently still in shock that were getting new day I picked up dazai content so bare with me, but onece again Asagiri has included playing cards in his art so of course I have to break down what they mean.

Lets start with side A (the right side):

First we see a joker:

While Gogol is the obvious fit for the joker, the card also describes Dazai extremely well. He is almost always acting like the fool in any given situation, even in the mafia he loved to be as weird and funny as he could as well as tease and annoy the people around him, something jesters famously did.

In fact, his dynamic with Mori is very close to how a king and a jester used to work, where the jester was the only person who was allowed to openly mock the king and would usually heckle him. They also played a key part in psychological warfare, which we see Dazai specialises in.

I think the whole; wit, intelligence and unpredictability kind of speaks for itself.

Next card is the four of spades:

This one is also really fitting, it shows how after the day I picked up Dazai side A, Dazai settles into his little routine of going to bar lupin with Oda as well as how he finally has someone who he can trust and be comfortable around. Finally, it is a clear message of optimism, something Dazai never shows before he meets Oda.

Next the two of hearts:

This one is pretty obvious, it's Dazai and Oda spending time at bar lupin. It actually fits so well, there's not much I can say about it other then how it shows the love and care Dazai and Oda had for each other (platonically)

Now for Side B (prepare to cry)

The first card is the three of spades:

Whyyyyyyyyyy... why Asagiri. This one is also fairly obvious but it has multiple meanings. It most clearly represents Dazai suffering in side B as he has to run the mafia without odasaku and live in utter loneliness while destroying all the connections he never got to have for the sake of a friend he never got to meet.

“It was hard,” muttered the young man. “It was really hard fighting Mimic without you in the organization. I had no choice but to take over for Mori and make enemies of everyone around me to expand the business. Everything I did was for this world’s—”

It also represents the moment on the platform where he nearly tells Odasaku the truth and goes with him to bar lupin, the horrible decision to abandon everything for Odas future

The next card is... the ace of spades:

The ace of spade has many meanings, most of which involve change or transition, but by far its most famous meaning it death. I really don't think I have to explain this one, Beast Dazai having the card of death has a pretty clear meaning.

But the ace of spade does have a secondary meaning, and this one is a little more hopeful, as it shows Dazai passing the safety of this world onto Atsushi and Auktagawa.

Finally, (it's a bit hard to see) we have the ten of diamonds:

I want to focus mostly on the highlighted part because it's what really applies to BEAST Dazai, he lived his whole life to create a world where what matters most to him, that Oda gets to be happy and write his books, becomes real. This card doesn't apply to Dazai directly, more to the fact that he made succeeding in his mission his only priority and discarded everything else.

Bonus round Odasku card; the king of clubs

the only card thats seen on Oda's section and one that clearly represents Odasaku as a character.

"King of clubs represents a dark man, who is loyal and kind. He is a good businessman, shrewd with money and investments, but isn’t selfish. In fact, the King of clubs is a very devoted father, husband and citizen. In a broader sense, the King of clubs encompasses idealized qualities of a fatherly figure. This card is universally considered as a very good omen."

I feel like this sums Odasaku up very well, the devoted father and loyal friend parts are just him to a t.

oh now i want to know why you hate one piece (just so you know where im coming from, i used to hate the series and thought was the stupidest thing ever and there was no way it was good, and then i read it and it was amazing and i loved it and it moved me in profound ways, and yet i did not forget why i thought it was stupid and indeed i can still fully see why someone would think it is stupid because, lets be honest, it is kind of really stupid so) yeah, im curious

i once loved it as a late teen, i even had one piece ocs LOL. One Piece is not bad because its stupid, or has toony art style or w/e .. but it is bad because its betrayed all the characters and core principles of the story that it pretended to be so invested in. in so many ways its honestly impressive. While i don't agree w/ everything said - youtuber Drizzt has made a very long mutli-series video essays about the various issues and i have enjoyed watching them as it covers arcs that i could not force myself to read. I personally kept reading to the mermaid island arc, but emotionally i dont think it was good when they reached the grand line. (laboon stuff was cute, but after that.. trouble) i dont really like alabasta arc and i feel like every arc after that, is just trying to do that arc again but worse every time. (all complete w/ a new princess character to be tossed aside for the next round..) i hated robins backstory and her part in water 7 (she was my fav female character in the series & i loved her powers.) i wanted usopp to leave the crew or have some real consequences w/ him and the ship. i hate luffy being like such a chosen one in so many ways he has 0 agency in the story, there's some to be expected but now its like at the point where i dont even know what else you could add. he really is the nepo baby of the one piece world. no one dies EVER and i dont even count ace dying bc who gives a fuck abt ace, luffy sure doesnt cuz he got over it in like 1 chapter after he died w and now he has a new retcon brother (who also was dead at least once i think and had amnesia) to fill in the void. franky is ugly as shit now. i could go ON.

Yeah, people seemed receptive to it, I'm glad! I don't even feel like I came up with it, my subconscious did, lol. I did end up having a lot of thoughts about it, though! I'd genuinely love to see what people do with it if the idea spreads! Seeing what people can do with prompts like this is always delightful.

Also spot on on my ideas for Franky and Robin, yeah! I considered Clover for a bit when it comes to Robin, but I think Olvia makes more sense, especially since I Support Women's Wrongs and want to have a more balanced cast gender-wise. For Jinbe honestly, I couldn't figure it out at first, but Fisher Tiger makes the most sense! The AU in my head is less about mapping the generations out perfectly, and more looking at the Strawhats and their roles, rather than ages. So it is role-based-first!

Honestly for Brook, I had two ideas initially! My first was swapping him with Yorki, but that doesn't feel right considering they were peers.

But then it dawned on me that in terms of who's alive and who is not in this AU, the canon / original Strawhats kinda follow the state of the mentors they've been swapped with (i.e. Nami, Chopper, Robin, Jinbe and Franky would be dead 😢), and since characters keep the same powers and skill sets from canon (so Luffy still has the Nika fruit, Shanks still fights with just Haki and Gryphon, etc), that means Chopper's Human-Human Fruit got reincarnated.

So of course, I think it would be ideal for Laboon to have gotten it! I love the idea of Brook being the one waiting for him to return at the lighthouse on Reverse Mountain, and Laboon being the one that got lost in the Grand Line and is trying to find his way back! I imagine this Hito-Hito version of Laboon would develop a very sweet friendship with Hiriluk once he joins the crew! Considering Chopper would be his dead father figure in this lol. Kinda like Luffy being glad that Sabo got Ace's fruit in canon, and feeling like he lives on through him.

Other non-protagonist cast ideas include Roger being swapped with Ace (so Ace is the dead pirate king, and was still Luffy's older brother figure. Meanwhile Roger is Shanks' older brother figure like Ace was for Luffy in canon, since the ages have been fudged around for this. Or maybe more like a young uncle? Either way he's still an older male relative figure lol).

Garp and Koby feels like another obvious one, with Koby being a Vice Admiral and a good friend of Luffy, despite the fact that Luffy is an Emperor lol. I like the idea of Luffy being the World's Youngest Grandpa somehow in this, and Garp as his grandson being Koby's trainee haha. There's a lot you can do with so many characters honestly. I'd just have to go arc by arc at this point haha.

If I'm being honest, I kinda found myself more invested in figuring out what the Older/Mentor Strawhats are like in this AU, rather then the equivalent of the young protagonist crew. I guess it makes sense, considering they're the actual protagonists in the original story lol, but I enjoy all the ideas I was flooded with about them a lot!

I actually started writing a long-winded file with bullet points about all 20 main swapped characters, but I wonder if anyone's actually interested enough for me to post it or not. It's not even done yet, but if people really want it, I'll finish it lol.

Trey loves seeing the way you react around him, seeing you get all flustered makes his heart race and it only makes him want to tease you more

He found out about your "secret" by accident LMAOOO. The two of you were in the Heartslabyul kitchens with you reading a book and sitting on the counter, and Trey had a tray of baked goods in his hands(haha get it, Trey, tray?)

You suddenly got a text from ADeuce that Grim was causing trouble in the Rose Maze to which you promptly took off to take care of your brat cat, but in the process of doing so, you left your book wide open.

Trey didn't mean to look! He was walking towards the counter with the tray of baked goodies in his hands when his eyes wandered and landed on the page.

By the time that you made it back from stopping Grim from burning down Heartslabyul dorm, you walk back into the kitchen, seeing Trey reading the contents of the book, fully invested. As soon as he hears you coming back in, he merely smiles at you like, "This is what you're into?"

Definitely does not let you live it down, and only teases you more from there(in a lighthearted manner obv)

Ace Trappola

He's an absolute menace, shit-eating grin, and everything. A lil piss baby.

The two of you are in a study session together, you're helping him with the recent history lesson that the two of you went through in Trein's class.

Ace gets up to go to the bathroom, but when he does that, he just so happens to glance over at what you're reading on your phone when he suddenly just grabs it out of your hands.

He starts reading the lines of dialogue(and he's pretty damn loud too, it's a wonder you guys didn't get kicked out of the library right then and there), holding your phone high above your head.

Meanwhile, you're all flustered and your face is flushed as you tug on his uniform sleeve to try and bring his arm down.

He'll never openly admit it but he finds your reactions very cute and he wants to see more from you.

He continues teasing you, but he never crosses your boundaries, If he does tease you too much to the point where you get upset, he quickly apologizes, mainly because he starts panicking(Grim also joins in on the teasing even though he has no idea what's going on)

Azul Ashengrotto

He gets embarrassed on your behalf for you.

So this is under the assumption that the two of you have been friends for a little while, mutual pining definitely not obvious(who am I kidding, it's very obvious everyone can tell you guys are down bad for each other)

he doesn't make fun of you, it's not like he's going to judge you for your interests. Pre-overblot, he may have taken the opportunity to use it as blackmailing you into obeying his every whim, but post-overblot he's far more thoughtful in regard to you

So when he does inevitably find out, while you're all embarrassed and trying to find an excuse for yourself, he's clearing his throat and handing you back your phone/book(whatever you were using to read what you were) and looking away shyly with a blush on his face.

slogging through everyone unlocking meta vision rn 💀 idk if because im not enjoying it that much so i missed something but i also dont understand how this is different from isagis other vision power ups

how many ways can you really say, yes, he has spatial awareness?

we GET it. He can see behind his head.

the main problem for me is that meta vision and analyzing the field end up being VERY long and pointless dialogue explaining Isagi's every muscle twitch.

which we already got too much of. so it's just heaping on extra.

it's really boring, plus, here's the other dirty secret.

Barcha was fine, because it was 9 chapters, and it was mostly just Bachira and Otoya and Lavinho getting to shine. These are fairly likable characters (quirky, you know?), even if they get brushed over.

Manshine was really good, because while it was long-ish, it was exciting because Nagi is always fun to see, since his goals are insane, PLUS he and Reo "fixed" their beef during the match, which was something to get you emotionally invested in Nagi's success.

Plus, Chigiri vs. Kaiser was epic, since we all love Chigiri, and can root for him to beat this smarmy little prick.

Chigiri, Nagi, and Reo have had the most development, since they've been with us from first selection, and are in general, very relatable/interesting people. They have emotional depth. They kept us very invested.

But then you get to Ubers, and it's like...

I like Barou, ok? I think he's great. I didn't like him originally, but being humbled by Isagi made him a pretty good character in my book...

But he can't carry that match alone.

Look at the cast, man.

I'm sorry, but Aryu? A shallow character who can be funny here and there, but has largely lost relevance? Niko, a guy with no backstory, who has always been just a pale imitation of Isagi AND who can't stop yapping too?

Aiku, who was interesting originally, but barely gets to do anything in this match which was SUPPOSED TO BE about how good Ubers is at defense?

I also personally don't like Sendou, although I know some people do (he's too het for me). Not really sure what his character traits are, besides him wanting to date a Hollywood actress.

These are like, the surface level characters.

They don't have the rich history of Nagi and Reo. They don't have the character depth of Bachira or the realism of Chigiri, nor the sympathy that those two characters evoke.

These are like, just opponents Isagi has to surpass.

Like the other characters technically are too, but, at least they felt more personal. These guys, nah.

Now I did like Lorenzo, the ace eater. He's a very interesting idea... but he does lose his relevance, and become nonexistent, the way every character does in these matches.

And Barou, I mean... I like the guy, but something was just missing for me...him changing the plan was...kinda whatever to me. It somehow felt like it went on too long, while also happening way too fast... and that's been all of NEL for me.

And that's the other issue, besides the characters.

The pacing of NEL is pretty bad.

Barcha was super short, and Manshine wasn't so bad until the end... but Ubers is where the drag happens.

Just so much dialogue. No emotional investment, just rambling about where isagi's foot was five minutes ago.

That's the biggest issue, ok?

It always is. You can't expect an audience to care, if you don't give them characters to root for.

Isagi was such a prick during Manshine, that I was starting to dislike him. But Ubers was where he started to feel like he was never going to lose again.

So that's where he became really unlikable to me during this arc...and then we get to Ubers, where he's like a god, and it's like ok... a god who can do no wrong, against characters we don't care about?

He's just a guy who passes to Isagi, same as Kurona.

i can at least promise that the next match is slightly better. there's more emotional moments, at least.

it crams SO MUCH into the match, that you WILL be hoping to die by the halfway mark...so...yeah.

short answer: you’re right, i enjoy consuming romance media (especially queer media) because i love the idea of romance…. however, when i personally have gotten too close to it in the past, i just freak out.

no matter how much i think i want it, my brain and my body just shut down when i get too close… and then the aftermath of that can feel pretty shit! bc usually i’m just annoyed at myself in some weird way, as if i didn’t just experience the same thing as i did last time, and the time before….

in terms of heartstopper, of course there are aro/ace characters represented (i mean, come on, duh, even alice themself) but we all know it’s a very romance centric show/comic

i’ve never been able to define if it’s just… a sense of identity within the characters or just generally being happy for them or…. a whole mix of emotions but!

seeing characters im emotionally attached and invested in get together and be happy is like!!!! drugs!!! idk!!!! and probably the closest thing i’ll get to experiencing that with… another person which seems like a very odd thing to say!!!

but that kind of excitement is something i guess i could never feel with a relationship of my own so… living vicariously through characters like the ones in heartstopper actually really helps me with aromanticism? it’s odd! and that def doesn’t go for everyone but it’s at least what happens for me

to expand on the queer media comment too, i’ll consume queer media that even might not represent aro/ace people at all! and still feel that same fulfilment!

if you take a story about a character realising they’re gay, people will focus on them realising they feel attraction for the same sex. i mean, that’s what it is at face value.

but an equally important part of the representation for gay characters is the realisation that they are not attracted to the opposite sex. and THAT i can relate to.

when representation for aro/ace people is this sparse, you get pretty used to finding representation in people you don’t really expect to. and that’s also what heartstopper does for me, while it fulfils my desire for romance through me living vicariously, it also represents me, not just in its aro/ace characters, but in every queer journey! because there’s always a sneaky hint of aro/ace representation anywhere as long as we can do something about it! hah

sdlkjf ya'll i really wanted this to harder but idk i didnt feel the depth or sensibility this called for was there tbh. but it was a blast!!! but … it missed a bit of that x factor thing. like some kind of universality to the romance w/ the rogue. i feel he was too sketched-in.... i was also a bit disappointed that ruby's friend was not her friend bc it meant her whole thing this ep of connecting to that woman was for nothing (and up until that point it was feeling very Important specially after the marti thing) (and speaking of, the chuldur's were kinda very sketched-in / surface-level as villains as well) … yeah. idk. kinda disappointing ngl (diodati > this i think). pretty fucking gay tho so that was nice.

heyy!! i'm about to start another reread of atott but although im trying to get better at this, im bad at leaving comments (i get too invested in the action & dont mark down my thoughts... so when i get to the comment part i don't remember all or anything i wanted to talk abt + i'm ruminating on what just happened. that's true for the updates i've been following and doubly so for binge-reading sessions) so i just wanted to say some things directly to you, right now, before i forget - i adore the colosseum to this day. i was invested from moment one and the way you described everything was so impactful. to this day i also remember the way ren was panicked & aiming to return home despite his concussion, it felt very visceral and real. also the entirety heresy ring, akechi finding out he was in the fraud ring (this cracked me up iirc. that boy read you akechi), the toy grandma wanted to give ren & akechi managed to get to him (and ren/arsene crying bc of it....), the river, the hanged man game.... gods, you captivated me so much even within those first chapters.

another moment that is very present in my memory is the whole section where ren is in shido's palace, hiding from akechi w/o knowing it's him, finding out he was the "birdman" and then the aftermath, akechi's high fever, the way ren did his best to take care of him, how he told him he'd do the hit on the principal for him. it was all so good!! like i found ur fics from the accomplice tag iirc so i wasn't surprised when it happened, but it was all so exciting still! my memory sucks so i can't even paraphrase what ren told akechi before leaving to do it, but i do remember how akechi was still convinced (and kinda hoped) ren wouldn't actually get involved & he'd just end up dead. then ren came back, with new glasses to boot! lol

ohh also that moment where ren crossdressed and akechi was definitely attracted but ofc he can't Say It so he just critiques his makeup capabilities instead....... i was like. of course. of couse you would.

and i found atott shortly after finding out i'm arospec despite being very interested in making fictional characters kiss & romantic scenes in general, so it was very interesting to read akechi believe he was aromantic & have to deal with Actually Having Romantic Feelings Fuck This lmaoooo tho tbf i'd actually react similarly if i found out i was demisexual instead of completely ace like i think i am, so i also identified with it in that sense, since i've know about that part of my identity much longer than being arospec lol

ah. this is very long but i have more i want to say... so im gonna keep talking lol. ren realizing he was cluster-b helped me realize & come to terms with my low empathy. i remember when first reading akechi suggest ren get himself checked for sociopathy i was a bit skeptical bc i worried it'd be just edgy stuff, but i'd been trusting your writing & decisions so i decided to be optimistic & i rlly liked how you handled it, and, again, it helped me come to terms with the parts of me that also wouldn't be seen favourably by some of these ppl who insist they're mental health advocates lol

also, i rlly like akesumi so when sumi realized he was munin i was giddy. her own smile about it made me happy too.... oh this makes me remember the scene of futaba finding out ren is her online friend too gods such good scenes!!!! and finding the palace keywords. which made me remember the bad ending chapter in maruki's reality which i only managed to read on my 3rd read of the fic & then was immediately invested into too.....

anyway, what i want to say is, thank you so much for writing atott. it is almost constantly running through the like, background of my thoughts, and the story has been very important & dear to me. i hope you know it is genuinely engraved within me at this point. i love it so much. ♡

Shbsnssjsn okay first of all: Thank you. So so much for that little message because it made my day. It makes me really happy to know my existence means something to someone out there. I know it’s dumb it’s just snnsshbss it makes me feel like being alive and my frequent dumbass posting is valued and is what motivates me to keep going.

Anywho! Yeah, ace attorney somehow did end up saving my life during one of my lowest points. It’s kinda crazy to think about and even more so to say aloud but. Woah. This silly game about idiot lawyers ACTUALLY saved me? It’s surreal LOL

Where do I start? I was first introduced to AA during the pandemic I think. I watched some videos on it but never truly got into the fandom until maybe three years later? To be honest, I don’t even remember WHY I got back into AA, considering I was already hyperfixated on something else. It started popping up on my feed a ton I guess?

During that time, I was in like. A really, really deep depression. I can’t say too much about it but a lot of it was because of my dad. People on my discord probably know that I was in my vents channel nearly 24/7 talking about how much I hated my life and wanted to hurt myself, and began spiraling deeper and deeper with every episode and breakdown I was having. I’d constantly talk down to myself and start fights and I think it started pushing my friends away.

It was paragraph after paragraph about my miserable, pathetic life. Long, long paragraphs.

So I started coping. It started out as me posting AA memes on discord, then watching some dumb YouTube shitposts. Then I finally caved and started watching the Ace Attorney anime [which yes, does exist. It’s not the greatest and I get why it’s pretty largely disliked by the fandom but it was my intro to the world of AA and it was such a fun watch. Fun fact, it was the first anime I’d ever watch in full!]. I fell in love with the series so quickly that my daily vents turned into me telling my friends how much I loved the series. I was always talking about it when I got the chance, and it brought me so much joy and comfort that it became a huge part of my life. I watched play-throughs of the games, read the supplementary manga and even bought merch for it! That’s around the time I bought my Phoenix Plushie which I am emotionally attached to lol. It was also a great bonding experience since my friend Yax was a fan of Ace Attorney, my siblings started getting into because of me, and I even met kids at school who enjoyed the series! It was.. the most comforting experience I’d ever had.

I was so emotionally invested in AA that it made me cry lol.

I’m definitely understating how much AA helped me get through this terrible part of my life, because it’s so SO difficult to put into words. But trust me, I don’t know where I’d be without it.

Course I’m not as hyperfixated on Ace Attorney as I used to, but I still love the franchise with all my heart. I even have… [checks notes] 20+ original characters for an AU that I am very invested in!

But uh. Yeah that’s the story I guess? I’m probably missing stuff, I have a terrible memory when it comes to that time in my life but hey that’s the gist. Sorry for dropping so much Neri lore LOL! Thanks for the ask though, I really appreciate it. It was.. refreshing? To talk about. Yeah :33

— i just. yes the stuff with jean sucks majorly (i went in armed with janet hsu’s trivia that he is meant to be a cis gay drag-performing guy and thus had a better experience than most people did i think) but the last turnabout was fucking spectacular. i love when phoenix straight up lies.

An unpopular opinion: crap, but that just now *was* my unpopular opinion! okay uhh. i really like how godot and iris and misty have the exact same guilt complex going on. i think if you have different opinions on the three of them you are somewhat missing the point (like yes misty did abandon her children and yes godot is mean sometimes but like. at their core. they are So Much the same and that is what destroys them and also what starts off bridge to the turnabout.)

— also i think that aa4 should have been phoenix and maya destroying the death penalty because they’ve realized that the truth is necessary yes but also punishment does not work and will never get only the imaginary perfect bad person because all aa villains are human but especially in the end with godot. and then they should deal with the ramifications of the fact that this means morgan will not be subjected to the death penalty
