I just had an awful, terrible idea for an alternate ending to ‘Epic’ 😭. Odysseus comes home and begins to fight the suitors, but he can’t spot Telemachus anywhere. He brushes this off and keeps killing the suitors, until he stumbles across a younger man in armour whose begs are much more pitiful and genuine sounding than the others, but Odysseus is filled with fury and kills him all the same. When every last man is dead, he finally finds Penelope, and after reuniting with her, he asks where their son is. Penelope is confused, she tells him:

“He was in the courtyard, you surely saw him.”

It’s only then that Odysseus remembers the younger man that he killed. He rushes outside and kneels down beside the body. The boy looks like a younger version of himself, with Penelope’s nose. The gods obscured Telemachus’ true identity and filled Odysseus with blinding rage as a final act of revenge. As the King of Ithaca holds his son and weeps, Zeus and Poseidon laugh victoriously.
