A Study in Fear: “The Speckled Band” and “The Final Problem”

There were only ever a handful of occasions when Holmes would ever feel afraid or even question the safety of his and Watson’s cases. One such case was the “Adventure of the Speckled Band.”

This particular case strikes me as most peculiar in how Holmes actually felt. What caused his fear? What led him to sense such dread? And, more importantly, why did he think it was better for him to face this case alone while he and Watson hid inside the greenhouse not 20 metres away from Ms. Stoner’s rooms?

Holmes had already deduced the snake, he knew of the Indian and African origin of said creature, he knew that it was Roylott committing the murders on his poor step-daughters. Any of these could have been the source of all of his anxiety and unsettled words, yet he felt more fear for Watson rather than for himself.

The exact words Holmes used were:

"I have really some scruples as to taking you to-night. There is a distinct element of danger."

Holmes’s penchant for entering dangerous situations was never questioned before, nor has Watson’s penchant for joining Holmes in said dangerous situations—and yet, here we are, seeing the machine, the man who abhorred emotion, flinching in fear at the thought of Watson joining him.

Obviously, other readers will eventually call this a contradiction, as the next few lines go as follows:

W: "Can I be of assistance?"

H: "Your presence might be invaluable."

W: "Then I shall certainly come."

H: “It is very kind of you."

Regardless of the danger they face, Holmes never asked Watson to stay. Watson asked if he should stay and Holmes said yes.

Take note of the wording, too. Watson asked if his “assistance” would be necessary, but Holmes required his “presence.” While, in Victorian England, this should come to mean “Would you like me to stay?”, “Yes, I would like that,” the implication that all Holmes wanted was his Boswell present was enough of a help that Watson realised.

Or perhaps Watson DID know this. His reaction was “then I will certainly come,” indicating that he knew all Holmes needed was his presence.

Watson wanted to be there for Holmes even when Holmes was too scared to admit it or accept it.

In fact, Watson barely did anything in the denouement—it was all Holmes. It was Holmes who beat the stick against the rope. It was Holmes who lit the candle. It was Holmes who solved the case.

And yet, Holmes thanked Watson for his presence. It was Watson who stood fast beside Holmes, it was Watson who drew his revolver at the bell rope, it was Watson on whom Holmes leaned on.

Holmes would have been perfectly capable of solving this case himself, of course, yet he still wanted Watson there. He didn’t care for the account nor did he care that he would admit to being wrong.

What mattered to him was that Watson was there.

Watson may not have done much, if at all, yet it is clear to me that Holmes deeply cared that his friend was there.

In “The Final Problem,” Holmes admitted to his hands shaking in fear because of Moriarty. The man was more myth and legend to him than a normal criminal—someone to be feared once he tried to sink his teeth into you. To Holmes, Moriarty wasn’t just an equal but a genuine threat. This filled him with anxiety, which forced him to turn to the only two people he could trust in a situation that would threaten his life and the lives of those he cares for—his brother, Mycroft, and Dr. John Hamish Watson.

Even then, Holmes kept their involvement to a minimum because he knew he had to face this threat on his own. A tête-à-tête, mano-y-mano.

Mycroft’s involvement was strictly limited to London, as he is “the British Government”.

Watson’s involvement was strictly as a companion—no case, no mystery, no deductions. They were on the run and both knew it. This entire thing was to keep Watson safe: if Holmes had left him behind in London, Moriarty would have gone after him and used him as leverage.

Many times, Watson had noted Holmes’s nervousness and anxiety and tried to reassure him. Coffee, cigarettes, wine or beer, a walk, anything to keep Holmes’s mind off of the case so that he could focus on actually getting away and relaxing, then Mycroft could focus on solving the case (I genuinely wish we could see “The Final Problem” from Mycroft’s perspective).

Then, the fateful letter from his brother:

“Whole gang safely secured. Only Moriarty escaped the net. — Mycroft.”

The words that came out of Holmes’s lips should explain the rest:

“I think it would be better for you to return to England, Watson. You will find me a very dangerous companion, now. He will devote all of his energies to taking his revenge upon me; and if I have a companion—“

Watson’s response surely should illustrate his personality:

“Would you be rid of me? We’ve been in tight places before. I’m not leaving you, Holmes; not unless you order me to go.”

These two men cared about each other more than they’d ever attempt to admit.

Holmes knew his occupation was a dangerous one when he had first invited Watson to join him in “Scarlet,” but always one that was manageable. Holmes was an excellent detective and knew how to manage himself in a fight; Watson was an army medic with plenty of wartime experience and military expertise under his belt. If either one of them was in a scrape, the other would immediately pick up the slack.

Holmes knew Watson would be at risk—either with him in Switzerland or at home in London—but he’d be safer with Mycroft than with him. Fear was clouding much of Holmes’s mind but he had to think critically in order to keep his friend safe.

But what if Holmes had instructed Watson to hide before the final showdown with Moriarty? What if Watson had decided to climb back once the boy that was leading him back to the Englischer Hoff ran away?

Holmes only found out abt Moran after Moriarty had been thrown off. Surely Watson would have been an excellent bait for Moran?

I’m not sure what Moriarty and Moran were thinking.

But I do know this: Holmes wanted Watson safe and vice versa. As much as Watson wanted to stay and help Holmes stay on the grass, Holmes knew there was a threat on the horizon and wanted Watson to enjoy the grass, even if he was on the pavement.

my lovely mutuals and followers and circle of dykes. i am BEGGING YOU to stop reblogging that "NSAIDS while on spiro damages your liver" post. there have been MANY additions in the comments expanding on the risk factors of mixing these medications (and i HIGHLY recommend looking in the comments. @/boringkate assesses the risk beautifully in there, and many others are in the reblogs expanding on the interactions and risks as well). all those aside - the major risk of mixing NSAIDs and any diuretic (not limited to, but including ibuprofen snd spiro) is RENAL (KIDNEY) PROBLEMS!!! NOT LIVER!!! and the most frequent version ive seen to that post does Not do a good enough job clarifying that "renal function" is related to your kidneys, not your liver. there are some effects that will happen on the liver eventually of course, but the premise of the interactions is wrong in and of itself and this kind of misinformation is kind of dangerous to just take at face value/without curiousity

i encourage you to read the actual drugs.com summary on the interactions between NSAIDs and spiro that keeps being referenced in that post (more on this under the cut). it is a moderate interaction manageable with increased hydration (your kidneys love water!) and, if you're taking spiro under the supervision of a doctor, monitoring of your renal function via blood tests. and i understand feeling betrayed learning there are potential interactions between all NSAIDs and diuretics because these risks are often not clearly communicated by doctors themselves, but in the pharmacy and usually in that packet that comes with your meds that most people are more likely to toss than read - but please do not make sudden rapid changes to your healthcare plans or work yourself into a panic on ever taking a pain med ever again based on that post and PLEASE fact check things you read on the internet before spreading it as Health Facts, even if its just looking up what different words mean to understand more of what you're reading. i also really do encourage y'all to read on how kidneys work and this is a really nice overview

the risk of kidney problems mostly occurs if you are (1) taking regular doses of both medications (2) NOT drinking enough fluids (3) not communicating with your doctor about all the medications you are taking. if you are taking spiro as a treatment provided by a doctor and are worried about kidney problems after that post, by all means talk to them and ask about getting a blood test to check your kidneys function/health!! im not discouraging this!! your doctor likely isnt bringing this up in the first place though because (in my cursory glance over the sources) many of these studies cited even in the drugs.com article "specific" to ibuprofen and spiro are about a variety of diuretics interactions with a variety of NSAIDs. the ones that arent paywalled are also either acute case studies about elderly patients on diuretics (so who Already have kidney problems/elimination issues) who developed heart issues after diuretics treatement or observational studies specifically on men in good health ages 20-38 to specifically look at drug interactions in the body. in the more acute cases, with proper management/alternative medications almost every single case was reversible and resolvable. many of these medications in these papers also are ones I have not heard of or taken, so i did look up every single drug i didnt recognize by name references to confirm my initial assumption that the reason this is labeled a Moderate instead of low risk interaction is because All NSAIDS and diuretics have potential interactions (confirmed also that the major effect is that NSAIDS have the potential to reduce the efficacy of diuretics, which leads to fluid and salt retention, which can lead to other issues - namely heart issues in the most extreme cases) with variable effects based on specific combination of the drugs used, the patients specific health, and the dosage (not just the size of dose, but the timing as well).

as an aside: if you habitually are taking frequent (read: daily/scheduled, not a one off for a headache or other body pains) doses of OTC NSAIDs, Regardless of taking diuretics, you NEED to tell your doctor because even though its available over the counter (at least in the US) it is still a major medication in your life/relevant to your physiochemistry!! OTC medications are often overlooked by doctors and people alike because they are seen as ubiquitous and to many doctors OTC pain meds, like NSAIDS, are assumed be used in acute pain situations where the dosage is minimal/infrequent enough it will likely have little to no long term effect with other medications.

EA's leaves are kind of dull, and I personally think TNW's are too bright, so here's my spin on a leaf default + a new mod :-D

Leaf variety mod

There are 4 different leaf textures in the game files but only one is used. I talked with @shastakiss some years(?) ago and she mentioned an unfinished mod Neder started working on to make the leaf use different textures. Unfortunately, Neder couldn't get it to work. Shasta kindly sent me said mod and I handed it over to @lamare-sims last year who of course managed to fix it (thank you so much once again, you're a legend!!)

Note #1: worth mentioning, this mod will only affect leaves that spawn after you've installed the mod! the same goes for my mesh fix included in the default below. Note #2: if you already have this mod in you dl-folder, delete that file and use the one from this download if you're planning on using my default (otherwise my uv-map and texture edit will not work).

Defaults

Replaces all 4 leaf-textures with new, more colorful and less blocky textures. I also edited the "effect"-textures of single leaves (the ones falling from the trees). This default can be used without the mod mentioned above, but then only the "original" texture will be used - see second image.

The leaves that spawns under the tree (the one sims can't rake), it was impossible to make it look good with any of the four textures, so I re-mapped it and gave it it's own texture (256x256px). There's also an optional default for the rake included, I edited a tiny error in the mesh and gave it a texture makeover. I made a separate LOD90-default for the leafpile (meaning: the mesh in neighborhood view) and instead of replacing the textures I repo'd them, meaning that the LOD90 default works with any leaf texture default you might use (it will only be showing one texture in neighborhood view).

Texture sizes are all the same as EA's:

Leaves: 512x512px x4 (my default +1: 256x256px)

Rake: 128x256px

Leaf effects: 32x32px x3

I edited Sophie-David's leaf pile pet bed (the mesh) and repo'd it to leafpile_txtr, meaning the mesh will now pick up my default (or any other default you might have for leafpile_txtr, and if none - EA's original texture). The mesh now needs seasons + pets, since it's repo'd. Their recolors are not included, so be sure to download them from the link above if you want them and replace their mesh with mine!

I also edited Shakeshaft's leaf cover mesh (warning T$R) , I repo'd it to one of the leaf textures and made recolors - also repo'd - to the rest of the textures. This mesh and recs now need seasons, this also means that the mesh and recolors* can be used without my default.

*with the exception of rc4, which is repo'd to my custom leaf texture, found in my leaf default.

Recommended mod

I recommend simler90's Gardening Rake Leaf Pile Mod or jfade's leaf pile fix (I have no idea what the difference between those two mods are, they edit the same thing so choose one of them).

Nothing in this download is dependent on each other* so feel free to pick and choose what you want :-) remember you can only have one default for the leaves, meaning that if you have any other default (1, 2, 3, 4) or Shakeshaft's/Sophie-David's original meshes, make sure you remove them before installing my files. Everything has been compressed to reduce file size, as usual. Do let me know if I messed up anywhere!
