for me personally, what strengthens my autistic prowl headcanon is that he's rather good on the principles of body language, taking stock of minute movements and understanding what it could mean. he overanalyzes and tries to predict the meaning behind it. but he doesn't have the full grasp on social matters, thus making people unpredictable because he doesn't truly understand or even just 'go with the flow' when it comes to people. he needs a script of sort to interact, and in a way, body language is that.

he can have all the data on someone he wants, preferring to think of people in numbers because numbers are safe and predictable (not as in, oh, Prowl is willing to let people die. when i say numbers here i mean it literally, as in his calculations that he can't help himself from running). the individuality of people, however.... he can't actually put his knowledge into practice when he's thinking too hard on how he should react to said body language.

im not necessarily applying this to idw1 specifically, btw (all prowls are autistic to me). because the thing about idw1 prowl, i do like seeing him in an autistic lens but he is also Just An Asshole. he can in fact be both (though there's something to be said on how certain characters are a touch unreliable in how they talk about him because they believe the worst of him (i.e., Fort Max feeling he was left for dead when Prowl was led to believe that he had died), as well as how the writers just wanted to make Prowl Always in the wrong, even though he very much had a point in saying the Autobots were hypocrites, even if Prowl is still a bad guy despite being a victim). that's a lot of words to say that i hate people looking at Prowl's worst traits and trying to justify them simply with 'he's autistic' lol. there can be a genuinely interesting conversation on how the way his processor works can be an allegory for being neurodivergent/autistic specifically, but alas.. prowl is extremely flawed, and that's okay! he can be flawed and still exist within the realm of your headcanon.

really i just mean it's a bit Interesting when that's all people go with. you can say it's a mix of both, and that's still better than painting a rather harmful picture of autism/autistic traits. they don't make you into an asshole, they make certain areas of life harder to navigate. in Prowl's case, i think you can definitely say that both his good and bad traits can be used for the headcanon, it's just that he also doesn't do himself any favors when it comes to people liking him, and he's well aware of that. he doesn't pretend to be a good person, but he still gets frustrated when people don't see things the way he does.

they can sit and do nothing together. they can drink bitter tea and say nothing and pet cats and be content while he works on his thesis. they dont assume anything unspoken, they communicate if they want to say something, they dont have to worry about mysterious underlying social rules with each other, they dont have to sugarcoat anything.

obviously i don’t like, love, some of the changes to the show but i think the first half does a great job of setting it up to where you can see both alicent and rhaenyra are surrounded exclusively by much older men who want to fuck them, and have just no way of knowing who is being genuine with them. because no one is really! so you have episode 4, where alicent is sleeping in a room with pornographic art on the wall and being called to her husband’s bed and she can’t say no, and he’s not going to do anything to make the whole thing even marginally easier for her. and then you have rhaenyra, pulled from her bed by her uncle to a brothel, and she’s completely exposed, and she’s experiencing new things, and he’s purposefully trying to make this feel good but also overwhelming for her, then abandons her drunk & confused & half naked. this is The Same Thing - they’re both being used and manipulated by a much older man, but because that manipulation looks different, they react different. but it’s still manipulation.

jason todd is the second adopted son and robin to bruce wayne/batman. he grew up in a extremely poor part of gotham (which gives him a connection to the underdogs that bruce never had oop) his dad went to jail/died when he was a kid, and his mom ended up passing away from a drug addiction. jason became a self-sufficient street kid at a very young age.

how do independent young street kids meet up with the motherfucking batman?? easy. they jack the tires of the batmobile.

as time goes on jason’s anger management issues start rising to the surface and bruce, the biggest hypocrite on the east coast, takes umbrage with this. just like bruce, jason has an extremely strong drive to do the right thing and obtain justice, but he often finds himself frustrated with the constraints of the legal system.

this comes to a head with felipe garzonas, the son of a diplomat who sexually assaulted a young woman but cannot be held accountable due to ”"diplomatic immunity”” the young woman ends up hanging herself out of desperation. jason—who is particularly sensitive about violence toward women—takes this hard. he goes to felipe’s apartment to exchange some words and, well.

personally, i don’t think jason killed garzonas, but i wouldn’t be particularly upset if he did. guy was an asshole and nobody should feel bad that hes dead. but already we can see the cracks forming in jason and bruce's relationship and in jason's relationship with the extremely strict bat ethos.

anyway, jason gets benched as robin due to his anger issues (bruce. come on. a modicum of self-awareness.) while he’s benched, he discovers that the woman who raised him was not, in fact, his biological mother. jason runs away from home to find her, bruce eventually catches up, and they find jason’s biological mother, sheila haywood, working as a doctor in ethiopia.

unfortunately for everybody involved the joker is also in ethiopia doing….some joker nonsense with nuclear weapons. i don’t fucking know. anyway, turns out sheila is working for the joker, and jason, in an attempt to save her (because of COURSE he was trying to save her, because he is always always trying to be good and caring and heroic) gets lured into a warehouse and beaten half to death with a crowbar. joker leaves jason and sheila in the warehouse with a ticking bomb. they don’t get out in time. 

that’s right!! dc just killed off a roughly fifteen year old robin!! ahaha!!

it’s important to understand that like. jason STAYED dead. like he was dead for a long-ass time!! i’ve read that a common saying in comic book circles was something along the lines of “only two characters stay dead: jason todd and bucky barnes” and uh. i feel we all know how the bucky barnes thing went. anyway.

yeah he’s back!!! roughly sixteen years real time and four-ish years comic time after death in the family, we get under the red hood where jason todd returns to gotham city with a vengeance. how did we come back, may you ask? superboy punched reality too hard. he dug himself out of his own grave. wandered around brain dead for a bit before he got tossed into a magic pit and came out spitting mad. don’t worry about it it’s mostly handwaved.

(but wait!! if it’s four years comic time and he died when he was fifteen, wouldn’t he be a whopping nineteen years old?? yes. yes he is. possibly less, if you don’t count the time he spent brain dead or comatose. this will help to explain many of his succeeding actions)

anyway jason comes back to gotham and he is PISSED bc 1.) batman clearly isn’t an effective deterrent, seeing how crime continues to run rampant. gotham needs somebody to follow through on the threats and take the people who can’t change out of the equation. 2.) the joker is still alive. bruce claimed to love him like a son, and yet the man who brutally tortured and murdered him is still alive. 

AHHHHH anyway im normal

they fight about this. blow some stuff up about it. jason kills some guys. eventually, jason tries to give bruce an ultimatum between killing the joker, letting jason kill the joker, or killing jason so jason won’t kill the joker. bruce handles this by uh. hitting him in the neck with a batarang. ahahahaha

(wow that’s a lot of blood!! wouldn’t that have killed him?? some people (me) think it did, and whatever brought jason back for round 2 brought him back again for round 3. your father didn’t break his closest held rule to kill your killer, but he did to kill you. fucked!!)

anyway, after this jason’s role fluctuates. he goes through a phase where he’s a full-on villain/antagonist (and a ginger?? for some goddamn reason??) and then he moves into a more anti-hero/tortured hero role, which is roughly where he’s at now. sometimes he kills and sometimes he uses rubber bullets. sometimes bruce lets him do whatever and sometimes he really really doesn’t. depends on who’s writing him. 

there are a LOT of things that i like about jason peter todd. i think it’s pretty wild that he died that one time. i think it’s cool that he’s high-key a lit nerd (in just the comics i’ve read, he’s casually dropped references to orwell, austen, dumas, and a few others that i don’t even know despite having roughly five sixths of an english degree.) i think the white streak is cool. i love how stupid and dramatic he is at his best. i like the dumb loser quips that he makes. i think it’s wild that he’s doing all this in his late teens-early twenties.  

i love his deep, deep empathy, especially for the people batman overlooks.

i think his fraught relationship to his own emotions is incredibly fascinating. jason tries so hard to present himself as somebody who doesn’t give a damn and can’t be bothered by anything, but he’s a terrible liar and his true, explosive emotions always leak through. he’s always furious and grieving and trying, and no matter what he does, those are coming through to the surface.

loathe as i am to give scott lobdell credit for anything at all ever, there’s a really good illustration of this in red hood and the outlaws vol 2 (a jason comic that is not great, but is at least readable and often even fun). jason’s just found out that his dead and presumed estranged biological father tried to write him letters and reconnect while he was in prison. jason never got these letters, so he never got the chance. he goes to his father’s grave and digs it up, all the while screaming that he doesn’t care.

obviously, he does care. he cares so deeply. he tries to cover it up, but it just keeps on exploding through. it’s so delicious. 

anyway if you’re bored and you want to explore jason’s whole deal, i recommend starting with the under the red hood movie. it’s a little over an hour long, it does a pretty good job of hitting condensed emotional beats (even if it has to cut some pretty good moments from the comic). jason is voiced by none other then Jensen Fucking Ackles, and he does a really good vocal performance.

if you like that, i recommend moving on to the under the red hood comic, which has even more fun/absolutely emotionally devastating beats. the other essential jason reading is lost days, which covers how he trained to become red hood and is pretty good except for one weird moment at the end that everybody just kind of ignores because it is ah. bad. 

every other jason comic ranges from pretty okay (seeing red, which is technically a green arrow arc but jason shows up and is written well) to good and fun but throws a lot of random names at you really quickly (task force z, the hill) to entertaining enough if you lower your standards (red hood/arsenal, red hood and the outlaws vol 2, appearances in the morrison batman and robin run) to actively bad but characterizes jason pretty well despite everything and you’re desperate (gotham war) to do not read at any costs unless you are truly at your limit oh my god (red hood and the outlaws vol 1). there are plenty of other ones where jason has more of a supporting role. there's also a lot of excellent jason-centric fic, which is where i got into batfam, but this is long enough already jesus christ.

Ok wasn't going to post this but HERE WE FUCKING GO bcs the Zero stuff is back on my feed and Im just going to speak and if its stupid ignore it.

Looking at Zero's Patreon comments got me discouraged. Not because of the blatant transphobia- but because of the fact I saw another queer person praising this. And I don't think some people are actively aware of this shit so let SOMEONE has said it and people can't go around saying 'I thought they were trying to help' or some shit.

Let's just get it out of the gay. TLDR? Zero is not your ally or your friend as a queer person.

There is a very distinct difference between people feeling a bit upset about the gender neutrality because they get gender euphoria from being referred to as 'boyfriend/girlfriend' (and other gendered terms) and terfs/transphobes being mad because nonbinary and transmasc/transfem people exist.

Zero is not here to make you feel good. They're not trying to make sure that people who are gender dysphoric still get a bit of joy and spark from playing their game and seeing their simself referred to as someone's 'boyfriend' for the first time. That's not what's happening.

This is someone who clearly is hateful, and if claims about being a de-transitioned trans-woman is correct, clearly has a complicated relationship with the trans community and label.

They're not your friend. They're not your ally. They don't like you. And this should be obvious by the way they phrased their patreon post but clearly it isn't.

Don't mistake people wanting to harm others as your friends, please think about why someone would post a mod like this - if for your own sake. Don't sing their praises when they're part of the people who would throw the first fucking rock if they got a chance. Value yourself as a person.

You can feel miffed that you're not a boyfriend in a game- but a partner, that's allowed. Those are valid feelings- nobody can tell you how to feel. But you putting those feelings above nonbinary and trans people by supporting a creator who clearly doesn't care about us is an incredibly cruel things to do and yes it shows your character and true thoughts about trans lives.

This is absolutely not like- an entirely covering post and I'm sure I may have worded some things wrong because of my frustration with the situation and the way I feel incredibly disheartened seeing someone who identifies as queer support this mod's existence.

Trans women are women. Trans men are men. Nonbinary people are valid whether they identify as trans or otherwise and we deserve to exist too.

IDK just really frustrating because I've seen more than one person think this is some mod made to make them feel more affirmed in themselves when in reality this is a terf trying to delete identities.

To clarify in the first place that it's unlikely that im going to play veilguard soon after it comes out due to my distrust of bioware at this point. After going through development hell, pretty much firing all of their veteran staff, and repeatedly dropping the ball on most of their recent projects, I have extremely low expectations. My love of the DA series can only go so far and maybe some day I'll get around to playing It, but im nevertheless distrustful

That being said, the One thing I'm curious about with the game is going to be the treatment of Davrin. Namely, the broader treatment of black characters within RPG games. I've seen how these characters are treated by both the writers and fans, from preston Garvey in fallout 4, Jacob in ME2, and most recently Wyll in BG3 (and yknow fuck it, throw in vivienne from Inquisition, another dragon age game). All of these characters I feel like are written with a lot *respectability* in mind. Writers want the brownie points of diversity but don't want to fall into the trap of coming off as offensive in their portrayal. To do that, they play it extremely safe and try to make the character morally good, honorable, and decent. When they do write in flaws, they still try to keep things tame and non-controversial. The off shoot of this however is that they often come off as flat or underdeveloped. They don't know how to portray any real nuance with these characters or delve into any real heavy character work. And when do try to delve into heavy character work, they get nowhere near the focus or screen time white characters get. As mentioned, these predominantly white writers want to play it safe. But in turn, they just end up neglecting these characters writing wise while giving so much more attention to their other characters.

And in turn, the fan base heavily neglects them as well. I have NEVER seen a black video game character become a fandom "darling" in any sense of the word. They're simply acknowledged as being there, if theyre not actively disliked, which I've def seen in the case of Jacob and Vivienne. On one hand, we can point to the aforementioned fact that the writers themselves couldn't be bothered to show their own care for their black characters. But I'm largely aware at this point that Fandom spaces are extremely racist. Fandoms adore skinny white twinks like Astarion and Solas. It breaks my heart to see the focus time and time again be relegated to these white characters. In the case of Wyll, I feel like I've *seen* his archetype before; he largely reminds me of Alistair from DA origins, as the stand in for the noble and good hearted member of the party. And seeing how Alistair was very much beloved in his game, versus how Wyll is still barely given his dues, it just points to the fact that the lack of popularity is definitively linked to racism. And its so frustrating to see happen again and again.

So yeah, im mainly curious to see how Davrin is recieved once the game launches. I know im not the only one who laments how black video game characters get treated as "boring" or forgettable by fandoms at large. I can only hope that people grow more conscious of this trend and start to question why they never seem to get into certain characters 🤔🤔🤔
