#im making patches to sew onto a jacket

i've been on the hunt for punk letters to sew onto my queer/furry/canine battle jacket to no avail. finally im like, hey, i'm supposedly an artist. i can do that myself lmao i'm waiting for it to dry before i actually sew it on, and i might redo some of the smaller letters to make them fit better. but it was fun, now i'm thinking about other patches to make :3c

so im brand new to the punk scene and way of doing things and i really dont know where to start. I want to decorate my jacket with patches and pins and stuff but i dont really know how to do that. Do you have any tips?

epic! for patches first step is to source the materials you need for it!

youll want to get fabric thats thick and not too stretchy. Denim is the strongest fabric for patches. But ive never made one from that. I would cut up old clothes i didnt wear or take clothing that was going to landfill for fabric.

Now i go to a fabric store that takes all the excess from the main stores and sell its for cheap which is great for saving money.

for making patches for individual use its easy to make a simple stencil with cardstock or thin cardboard, think cereal box, draw on ur design. then use a pen knife to cut of ur stencil, then put it over fabric, then ull want to be using a sponge to apply fabric paint in the holes. Then you can clean up with fine paintbrush when ur done.

Another technique is you can free hand paint directly onto the fabric. If the fabric isnt sturdy, giving it a base coat of paint before doing your design can make it easier to paint on.

leave edge space at the side of ur patches more than you think you would need, so that you can fold the hems when sewing your patches down. This helps keep the patch together as when unhemmed the fabric edge is exposed and falls apart over time.

you can use dental floss or embroidery floss as alternatives to sewing thread. Dental floss is popular because it is sturdy, cheap, and easy to use, as well as u can burn the end of it if u run out of thread to finish. embroidery floss is fun because you can use different fun colors which adds characters and style. The stitches are also thicker and more visible.

you can make pins using a bottle cap, can tabs, and safety pin and paint! You paint the bottle cap to have ur design. U can sand it down to make it smoother to paint. then you put the tab in the back side of the bottle cap. Then slide the safety pin into the can tab with the pinning on bit facing outward, then flatter the sides of the bottle cap to encase the tab into place. This is a common diy if you google it images will come up for sure.

Had the enlightening thought that I could use my blog for blogging. I don't love splitting myself into separate marketable entities, so I'll probably post more craft stuff here. (I have a passing knowledge of So many hobbies it's a bit ridiculous- my most developed are probably doll customisation (wigs, faceups etc), sewing tiny clothes and maybe crochet.) I thought I would share some patch process from...2021? (ugh)

I don't know how many of you will have seen on twitter, but I've started making patches for my jacket after being deeply dissatisfied with what I could find online (I find that I need to know & search for a creator specifically or I just get mainstream patches... 'bee happy' etc)

The Billie patch (of the painting) was actually me going 'I wonder if posca works on fabric' and I tested it on the smallest scrap, which bit me in the ass, because I did that face with no planning or sketch and it came out perfect, no way I was going to do it that good again. SO i stitched it onto a bigger bit of black fabric, which is surprisingly unnoticeable in the end!

The rainbow strip was made because I didn't like how clean and manufactured store bought flag patches are, I wanted something undeniably gay, but a little more subtle and personal. I chose the colours to be a bit softer (I'm aware the dark brown should be black, I had no grey to pastel-ify it with, like I did the others) and I've seen little rainbow strip lapel pins before, so I sort of copied that in fabric form.

The next is Brian Molko in the 'Pure Morning' video, which I watched so much when I was younger. I put a screenshot through a binarization filter, and tried my best to copy it down. It was going really well, and then I foolishly placed it over my photo to see how it lined up (badly) and I went back in and completely ruined the likeness. While it wasn't a good copy, I still think it looked good before I went over it. SO I made another :'). I also sort of fixed up the first, because seeing it on the desk was embarrassing me.

I also added the embroidery in the colours I think of when I try and remember the video (his lips particularly were sort of coral coloured and the androgyny struck me hard as a teen)  The Eve Elloree was from an old gay magazine- the art director asking for assistance, I just thought it was really fucking cute haha Way more info on my long ass twitter thread.

Hopefully I can make more this year, I have too many hobbies and not enough wrist stamina!

Punk Johnny would be the type to listen to Electric Sockhead by Destructo Disk while waiting for you outside of your ballet studio. He's on leave and, contrary to what the others think, he doesn't wear compression shirts and gym shorts. He's got his battle jacket on with a pair of patch pants (I think he'd get too bugged by not washing his crust pants and would settle for patch pants). He's got his ear piercings (the same ones he uses various object to poke through while deployed to make sure they don't close up) and gels his mohawk so it's pointier. He doesn't use spotify, or apple music, or Amazon. He downloads music onto his phone (that he bought from a friend so he doesn't buy into a big corporation) and shops locally. I think the only reason Punk! Johnny is in the military and settles it in his brain is because he's part of a special task force, and not generic duty. He definitely has 1312 tattoo on his shoulder and some sort of tattoo for when Queen Elizibeth died (like that video of Irish people in the football stadium screaming "Lizzy's in a box!" when her death was announced mid-game)

He tries to not mess with your ballet attire, even if you had to shoo him away from drawing something on your leotard. The first time he came to one of your recitals and was looking for you, he got so many looks. To go from frilly tutus to spikes and leather boots was a lil bit of whiplash for most of the people there. The more recitals he went to, the more people recognized his and even began to refer to him as your man. He definitely bought some flowers from a small stand and brought them for you.

Every.

Single.

Time.

If you don't already like the music he does, he'll try to introduce you to it. I imagine he loves Destructo Disk (i'm projecting i love destructo disk sm) and would try to start you out with some of their softer songs (Goth Queen, Batty For You, Sockhead (not electric))

I like to think he'd make a light-colored battle jacket for you (they exist) and take you to local basement concerts. There's this thing that some people will do with their battle jackets where they'll get a piece of cloth, paint your initials on it, and then sew a patch over it so that it's like a pocket that can't be opened without taking the entire patch off. Once you two are engaged, he'd do that.

I was in the punk community for a WHILE (still am, just don't always dress the same. I do have a battle jacket tho) (Punk isn't just clothing btw. It's music, culture, politics, and clothing. You can dress however you want and as long as you got those others, you're good. A lot of discourse in the community tho unfortunately). I'm not 100% sure on Scottish punk culture, so I'm mostly going off of American punk culture. If anyone that's from Scottland or knows abt Scottish punk culture, lemme know in the replies!

i had an idea for a back patch but ive never made a patch jacket before so im not sure it's good. basically i really like making kandi so i thought i could use a kandi bag pattern to make a panel i could then sew onto the jacket where a back patch would go. like a patch, but beaded! do you think it would work or would it make the jacket too rigid and uncomfortable to wear?

Yooooooooo!!! I think that sounds AWESOME. Im not entirely sure how rigid kandi bags are, but I think as long as they give a *little* flex you’d be good?

But even if it doesnt work out, you can always take it off your jacket and then you have some wicked artwork

thrift haul was successful!

i found this denim jacket, which i already cut the sleeves off of

its a women's jacket so its made of that shitty cheap thin denim, but im okay with that, it'll make it better for summer use i think. should also make it easier to sew things onto it. also its a little small on me and wont close without feeling a bit tight, but i dont really intend to close it anyways so its whatever. for my first punk jacket, im happy with this as a base. plus it was like five bucks

i dont like these buttons much so i intend to change them. unfortunately my button collection is a total mess and i really only have mismatched ones, but i think i could make mismatched buttons look cool. i'll have to modify the buttonholes for the bigger ones

i got these pants, pretty light and simple, theyre dark grey and i intend to cover them in patches n shit.

i found a whole bag of various embroidery threads, which is a great score, and several pairs of knitting needles!

i also stopped by my mom's house and put together this box of goodies. some of this i already had on hand, some came from my mom's junk drawer, some came from my old boxes of stuff from when i moved out for college. its just metal odds and ends that i think i could turn into punk accessories or decoration for my clothes, plus a few pins i found. the snurtle one was given to me by my roommate's friend last year XP

the thing about having a cool jacket that you sew the patches onto is that you also have to be cool and suave to pull the act off. im the most awkward motherfucker on the planet so it doesnt work. a few weeks ago at the dispo the girl working the front desk was complimenting my jacket and trying to make conversation with me about it and i was forgetting how to talk to human beings

(if i was designing him and jeremy, id give them the same base ideas of layering and whatever but make michael more out there and jeremy more subdued and less patterned. really play up the comparisons between the two and how they operate in school society.)

kia ora!! i am currently making a battle jacket, it's not come that far yet because i don't want to stick anything down until i have more patches and shit but i can lay out what i do have and show you, it's just not very impressive yet:

the fabrics on the side are things i might add later on but idk yet, i'm very fond of the old plaid tho - also yeah im sewing sequins under the collar.

in light of that horrendous, overpriced Cult of Individuality jacket I saw today I want to share my vests from over the years

i dont even want to know how much money has gone into them. The vests are all jackets I got from thrift stores and chopped the sleeves off of, but patches and spikey bits add up quick. Cant really tell from the pictures but holy crap have my patch sewing skills improved over the years.

Late 2000s/Early 2010s: My first vest, my thrasher jacket. From my "heavy metal is my only personality trait because everything else is buried in the closet" phase. Pretty much refused to be caught without it on for most of high school and a couple years beyond, starting with just the vest and the Slayer patch. Picked up a few of the patches at shows (Black Label Society, Children of Bodom, Nightwish, Misfits, Judas Priest) the rest were from eBay or random 2000s websites. its had various layouts of spikes/studs over its life, but all got removed to make room for patches. The big blank space is because I couldnt figure out how to sew patches over pockets, at the time. I dont wear it anymore both because its beat to shit and I definitely wouldnt rep some of the patches on it anymore. (ex the confederate flag skull Pantera patch) There were signs of things to come though. I found this, hiding behind the Ensiferum patch. X3

I intend to hold onto this thing forever. I forgot it also has Eat The Rich on it.

2010s-Now: These two are more recent, and still get some wear. I started the black one after I retired my kutte, and the blue one shortly before coming out ver2.0 dropped, a couple years ago, then immediately abandoned. I will probably transfer a lot of the patches to the black vest. Some will also go to my primary vest. No idea what Im going to do with the blue one. I love the back patch but the vest is kind of bulky and doesnt go over crop Ts very well, like the black one does. The Donkey Kong patch is probably my favorite. It was either a gift, or I bought it, from the retro gaming guy, at my local flea. Its in amazing condition for being 40+ years old.

My primary vest right now is this crop job. I plan on making it my magnum opus. Once I get patches situated I plan on filling the rest of the space with pins and paint. The backpatch and the Cisn't patch on the front are from @lakemichiganbaby (SturgeonsDesigns on etsy). [currently on a break for February 2023] The bows are from @genderpunks (GreerMarsCo on etsy) I plan on sewing them somewhere else, probably on the pockets themselves, because I have Ace and Nonbinary colors painted on the pocket flaps. The button holes are a convenient spot right now because they were originally intended as hair clips. Lots of work left to do on it, but Im in no rush to be done with it as a project. Hoping this one looks are rough as my old metalhead battle jacket by the end.

What are you a cop? You don’t need to know all that. I’m Gaz Guzzler, friends call me Gaz(mainly DJ)

2. Who do you currently live with at the moment

The Batcave with Spellcaster and DJ. Oh and that kid we picked up in like..zone 2. Didn’t get their name, but I call them Red.

3. What is your gender identity and sexual orientation

Man I don’t know….nothing? I’m just Gaz the Killjoy. Never saw myself like a chick or a dude or something in between. As for sexual identity…I read in a book it might be something like…ommisexual…I don’t know. I like everyone but WOMEN MAN, THEY REALLY GET ME!

4. Describe yourself(features, clothes,etc)

Im like a tanish…color I think. Anyways, I have short pink hair and wild magenta eyebrows(that’s right motherfuckers I dyed my eyebrows👌) I have light blue eyes(almost looks white for some reason). There are freckles all over my nose and cheeks. I wear a pink jacket over a light magenta shirt with a blackstar on it(our gang sign). I got dyed dark magenta pants and two patches on the knees that represent DJ and Spellcaster…gotta make one for Red if he stays with us. I also got a duck earing.

5. What are some words or phrases that you use often?

Swears…so many fucking swears bitch.

6. What is your best memory?

One time me and DJ went to a zone rave and we had a bunch of fun. I remember we danced to the music like there was no one else there. Also one time, DJ showed me her favorite songs and we got high and listened to them. Yea most of my happy memories revolve around DJ.

7. What is your worst memory

Well, even though it’s where I got my name, that one time that Fun..uhh another Killjoy dared me to drink gas after I said I’d rather chug gas than be left alone with him. That was pretty sucky. Tasted like shit. Also the ummm…the botched job. Yea that was………..NEXT QUESTION!

Aight well, DJ’s definitely number one. She’s as sweet as soda. She keeps all of us from dying. But don’t mistake her sweetness for weakness.(looks around to see if DJ is there) Word is around the zones, one time someone tried to assault and rob DJ. They fought behind a shed.yea DJ gave one hell of a beating…legend has it…her words after she finished was “if you die, give my regards to Jimi Hendrix.” Yea…sometimes she scares me. Red…man I don’t know them that much but they seem pretty cool. Spellcaster is last. Bro is a total hothead and a complete Narcissist. But he’s our leader and sometimes he’s okay. Just don’t bring up….uhh “the four”

I do graffiti a lot. And I also sew shit together sometimes to make new shit. I’m also pretty good with cars.
