Batman — or Bruce Wayne Musing

Batman gaze over the city lights and the sound of the wind among the car honks put him in a deep trance. The city is completely full with criminals but at time like this, it’s beautiful.

He wonders, the alternative universe where it’s completely perfect and criminals doesn’t run amok. It’s silly to think that because a perfect doesn’t exist. But he wonders, he thought of it and imagine it, where him and his family is still alive and well.

But Bruce Wayne, or Batman, is nothing more than a realistic. If his family is a alive and well, will he still be batman and save the city of Gotham?

Or will he be part of the richer society, embracing the persona that he put on as Bruce Wayne. Will he just donate his money and thinks it’s the best and naively thinks it helps to make the city better.

He thinks of all the villains who’s under the Wayne’s company who still betrayed his trusts and went on to become a villain.

And then he thinks of all of his adopted sons that he failed. Will they be better off without meeting him? They probably would’ve gone under care of a better suitable family.

Or maybe fate will bring together and Bruce end up adopting them again. Maybe Bruce could have done a better job since he has a better childhood and an active relationship with his parents.

He know’s there are some possibilities . But the universes are big and they are universes that are beautifully or tragically entwined with the same fate.

However, what’s the use of thinking of this while he’s still living in the same universe? The universe where he parent dies tragically, the criminals ran amok, and the sons he failed to be the best father to? Was it really worth it to daydream about something so far out of reach?

He doesn’t know.

But all he know is that he’s grateful he has Alfred with him during the hard time of his life. He is grateful to meet those wonderful friends he met during his life. The friends who fight along side of him. The people who he come across and learn their story.

He is grateful that he has met his sons. He wouldn’t trade the world for them. If there’s another life, he would wished that he could have done better for them.

Merlin blinks as he stares at the figure before him. It is a man, with golden blonde hair and the bluest eyes. A man that he imagined so many years of seeing again, yet was disappointed every single time.

He takes note of the way the man stands, the way he carry himself.

"Is this true...?" He whispered, still frozen in his place. He was in his aged self, a man once again grieving in the middle of what has became a celebration of family and love. To him, this day is no day of happiness, to him this was the day that he had lost the man he loved.

"Why Merlin, I didn't know you were that slow," that voice made him stand, ignoring the creaking in his bones.

"But, how...?" The man shouldn't have known that it was him, he aged himself up and frankly speaking even if he looks like Dragoon, he should have called him that instead of his real name.

"It's your eyes, Merlin. Always has and always been. Anyway," the man smiled and walked slowly towards him, his arms spreading out, "I have waited for a long time do this." And the man enveloped him in a tight hug.

It took him a few seconds to register what is happening to him, but then he heard him calling out his name again, like a mantra of some sort.

"Merlin... Merlin..." The man is crying. And if he took time to notice, he was as well.

It must have been his magic reacting to his emotions, as his mind flashes back to memories of the days when he served the Prince and then the King up until his last breath, he felt himself going back to what Arthur have last seen him as.

"Arthur," the name sounded so foreign yet warm in his tongue.

"I'm back, Merlin. You're never going to be alone again."

because sometimes there are invisible tests and invisible rules and you're just supposed to ... know the rule. someone you thought of as a friend asks you for book recommendations, so you give her a list of like 30 books, each with a brief blurb and why you like it. later, you find out she screenshotted the list and send it out to a group chat with the note: what an absolute freak can you believe this. you saw the responses: emojis where people are rolling over laughing. too much and obsessive and actually kind of creepy in the comments. you thought you'd been doing the right thing. she'd asked, right? an invisible rule: this is what happens when you get too excited.

you aren't supposed to laugh at your own jokes, so you don't, but then you're too serious. you're not supposed to be too loud, but then people say you're too quiet. you aren't supposed to get passionate about things, but then you're shy, boring. you aren't supposed to talk too much, but then people are mad when you're not good at replying.

you fold yourself into a prettier paper crane. since you never know what is "selfish" and what is "charity," you give yourself over, fully. you'd rather be empty and over-generous - you'd rather eat your own boundaries than have even one person believe that you're mean. since you don't know what the thing is that will make them hate you, you simply scrub yourself clean of any form of roughness. if you are perfect and smiling and funny, they can love you. if you are always there for them and never admit what's happening and never mention your past and never make them uncomfortable - you can make up for it. you can earn it.

don't fuck up. they're all testing you, always. they're tolerating you. whatever secret club happened, over a summer somewhere - during some activity you didn't get to attend - everyone else just... figured it out. like they got some kind of award or examination that allowed them to know how-to-be-normal. how to fit. and for the rest of your life, you've been playing catch-up. you've been trying to prove that - haha! you get it! that the joke they're telling, the people they are, the manual they got- yeah, you've totally read it.

if you can just divide yourself in two - the lovable one, and the one that is you - you can do this. you can walk the line. they can laugh and accept you. if you are always-balanced, never burdensome, a delight to have in class, champagne and glittering and never gawky or florescent or god-forbid cringe: you can get away with it.

you stare at your therapist, whom you can make jokes with, and who laughs at your jokes, because you are so fucking good at people-pleasing. you smile at her, and she asks you how you're doing, and you automatically say i'm good, thanks, how are you? while the answer swims somewhere in your little lizard brain:

how long have you been doing this now? mastering the art of your body and mind like you're piloting a puppet. has it worked? what do you mean that all you feel is... just exhausted. pick yourself up, the tightrope has no net. after all, you're cheating, somehow, but nobody seems to know you actually flunked the test. it's working!
