Damn man. Think I’ve realised it’s not Black people at large. It’s not. Nope. It’s a very specific part of the diaspora that is behind most modern apparatus in all forms that reduces, caricaturizes or, in entirely too many ways among entirely too many of us, disgraces Black culture and the representation of Black People in general.

And at the risk of offending or pissing some Black ppl off, it’s the African American community specifically. Black Americans. Specifically af, and I’m done defending it. It’s us. It’s Black Americans in their full-circle complacency. It’s literally the worst of us here making the rest of us look fucking terrible — and that is so anguishing. Year round.😮‍💨

It’s not Black Brits; it’s not Black Germans; it’s not Black islanders; its not Black Canadians; it’s not BIPOC; it’s not Africans in anywhere near the kind of prevalence we observe or experience the kind of shiftlessness and stagnance unique to the state of modern Black American communities. It’s Black Americans, 1000% of the time, making Black People all over the world out to be thee fucking same in the worst contexts. There’s a shame in desecrating our cultures, ourselves and each other that we just do not have here in the US.

And this why I gotta go. Y’all can have it; whole damn continent. All of us definitely cannot make it out — and i fear we’d be worst off encouraging everybody try. This some shit we as Black Americans definitely gotta unpack tho (and maybe get a move on?⏱️👀) cus it’s getting pretty damn irreversible. That should be terrifying. I gotta gtfoh.

"From Pet to Threat" - This just happened to me AGAIN and after 10+ years in this biz, I’m sick of having to get over it in silence for fear of being blacklisted, or labeled as “difficult to work with” because I chose to be open about my working experience. I won’t go into details, as this isn’t meant to be that kind of post, but I want to share this research because the “Pet to Threat" phenomena keeps happening to me and so many of my peers, particularly over the last few years here in LA. It’s truly an abusive cycle that repeats for far too many people in the workplace, but especially and aggressively for Black women in the entertainment/media industry. So many of us work extremely hard from a place of love, peace and genuine passion for our crafts. We choose to put our prowess out there, hoping that it’ll be reciprocated with that same authenticity by our leadership/mentors/peers, only to be undermined and vehemently devalued in favor of this insistence for power and control at every turn. I’ll never understand the need to prioritize pettiness & ego over doing the right thing for another team member or putting the best, most collaborative work out there for your company. What’s the point of hiring an expert or someone with big potential, just to diminish them? I'm tired of entering spaces I was promised were full of golden potential and stability, only to have to abruptly leave that space a short while later, lest endure unsafe + toxic working dynamics if I choose to brave it. The feelings of shame, guilt and confusion that come after are all too familiar, and yet they never get any easier to deal with. Constantly being in an anxious place of trying to figure out what went wrong and changing my approach, while the world you left couldn’t even be bothered to think twice about you, feels like a losing game. Why even play anymore? I'm only left jobless with no prospects, broke, and burdened with heavy feelings of sadness that I feel really dumb for having. Because it’s just a job, right? And the house always wins.

Some of you might question why even share all of this. Well, I fully believe transparency is one of the best ways to educate and inspire those around you. By sharing this article and a bit about my experience, I hope others feel encouraged to choose themselves and stop letting lazy business practices suppress their potential. I have no idea what’s next for me - this post has probably tanked any chance of me continuing a career in entertainment marketing. But what I do know is that I’m not accepting being overlooked anymore. Not having my true potential nurtured or recognized because the mentors I believed in would rather act out of insecurity than help me thrive is total BS. I deserve better than that, and so do you. I hope today is the day you know your worth."

What is Magical girl site and what sin did it commited?

Okay SO LET ME FUCKING TALK ABOUT MAGICAL GIRL SITE, CAN WE TALK ABOUT IT FOR A FUCKING HOT MINUTE, IT’S BEEN TWO YEARS SINCE I READ IT AND IM STILL FUCKING STEAMED ABOUT IT.

Alright, For those of you who don’t know the plot, I’ll have a brief synopsis here spoiler free and then the spoilers under a read more so if it does tickle your fancy you can read or watch at your leisure. This is going to be on the long side because I’m including some images. As always, these are only my opinions and observations--I encourage you not to take them as LAW of how you should view the anime/manga but rather watch or read it yourself to form your own rounded opinion if you feel like you have the stomach for it because the Manga at least covered a lot of harsh topics.

Our main gal is a girl named Aya. She is the victim of INTENSE bullying at school by a group of girls and at home by her older brother. And I’m not talking about leave a rude word written on your desk or mean comments-I’m talking physical violence day in and day out to the point of becoming immensely suicidal.

She eventaully comes across a website that promises to make her a magical girl and sends her a ‘stick’ to help protect herself and fufill her role.

It’s a gun. The magical girl ‘Stick’ can take numerous forms from game controllers, a cell phone, a pen, a broom, even underwear, but they’re all imbued with their own unique magical power. The gals use them to protect herself (Aya uses hers for the first time to protect herself from would be R*pists set up by her school bullies) She eventually makes friends with other magical girls

It turns out the website has a count down clock and they spend most of the manga trying to figure out what happens when the clock runs out. It’s later found out the site will target girls who in bad situations (ranging from dying of cancer, to being abused at school to needing to protect themselves) to use these wands which much like Madoka, uses up their life span, to suck up bad negative energy (as most of the sticks are used to get revenge)

The series is interesting in it’s tough topics like depression, suicidal feelings, abuse, bullying, abusive home lives, R*pe etc. and handles it in a rather mature way- And thru out the series I liked it, It was a great darker read, it had intense dark moments but also wonderful sweet moments of the girls being friends. As a person who never really got to have the full experience of Magica Madoka-this was an excellent alternative to a darker magical girl genre. It is also apparently done by the same person who made ‘Magical Girl Apocolypse’ and has references to that.

The series is also well noted for having a main trans character who is actually respected and loved by her comrades and her character is done respectfully without her being a ‘joke’

That’s her on the end with the hair bow, she is a good gal. The Girl in black is also a great one. Her Stick is a goddamn whole knife.

Now here’s where my Beef starts. Ahead is spoiler territory so if you don’t want to be spoiled if you plan on watching or reading MGS, you best stop here. Or continue on if you feel like you may need to brace yourself when you do want to watch/read it-I totally understand wanting to do that

So at the start, Aya meets another magical girl, her name is Tsuyuno Yatsumura. She goes to class with Aya.

Tsuyuno has the power of time manipulation with the help of her cell phone and from the start she is very much a boss ass bitch. Her family was murdered in a home invasion and she’s managed to catch the killer and been slowly and painfully torturing him with the help of her ‘Stick’ to keep him alive. She cares greatly for Aya and they become closer and Tsuyuno opens up more to her, there is actual character build up and development here.

Over time, Tsuyuno and Aya get closer and it’s shipping level territory after they share a genuine kiss after a date.

Everyone is like ‘well this is it, this the end game couple. I sure hope nothing fucking BAD happens.’ Of course it’s Magical Girl Site, of course bad things happen, but I wasn’t expecting THIS.

Tsuyuno is Aya’s long lost twin sister. Apparently they were adopted out and separated as babies.

And everyone feels weird and fucking incesty after rooting for that. ROOTING FOR THEM FOR SO LONG, because it wasn’t just a random thing-they had character development and chemistry and people were like ‘YEAH THAT’S IT. THAT’S THE COUPLE.’ and then the manga never fucking ADDRESSES THAT ‘yeah they’re sisters’ AGAIN.  And they BOTH FUCKING KNOW IT.

Then there’s the secondary beef.

Previously I talked about how there was a trans character. Her name is Kiyoharo

Thru out the series none of her friends misgender her, respect her as a fellow magical girl and team member, and it’s never a ‘hahah, a guy in a dress’ joke with her. She is a well done character. There is even a moment where she talks about coming out to her mom and her mom accepting her whole heartedly and supporting her.

Now twords the ending, it’s revealed that the timer on the site is a count down to ‘The Tempest’ which would be unleashed by an ancient entity known as The King. The negative energy gathered by the gals using their magical girl sticks was to gather up power to basically destroy the world as humans are the cause of all the planet’s problems.

Now when the team is squaring up against her-it’s found out that only boys who use the magical sticks can do real intense damage to ‘The King’. and first they were going to use Aya’s weird sociopath brother to do the damage but it was a ‘HAHA. NAH. you got fucked in the ass, you’re not a man, you’re a GIRL.’

Which let me tell you-was a deep inhale thru the nostrils for me. One, that was a rapey situation where he got fucked by another male character and TWO, getting fucked in the ass a woman does not MAKE. If getting fucked in the ass makes you a girl, that means there are a lot more women on the planet then men I GUESS.

anyway.

The manga already stated that regardless of how you identify, the site (which was set up by ‘The King) will recognize you BY THE GENDER YOU IDENTIFY AS. (hence Kiyoharo getting a wand because she is a girl and identifies herself as one.)

So they can’t use the brother as a killing blow because butt sex makes you a girl and ineligible to do the kill. BUT SUDDENLY THEY CAN USE KIYOHARO for THAT. Here is the DIRECT PULL from the WIKI ITSELF

And like the more I try to read that, the more it smells iffy. I don’t LIKE it. It ENDED WEIRD for me because of that. We were going strong  and then you just sort of ended it like that. I’m glad she got the killing blow in-but the reasoning behind it was iffy for me.

TLDR: Plot twist on the one lesbian couple is that they’re twins, apparently being fucked in the ass by a man makes a dude automatically a girl and apparently despite the whole system set up by the BBEG recognizing the one trans character as a girl suddenly is damaged by her ‘male energy’; that’s kinda my tick off points for the series.

It is a great series and interestingly done, but there are some points of it twords the end of the manga I’m critical of. I don’t know if the anime shifts gears because I haven’t watched it yet.

kaj + (inverted) tropes: part two! * * i don’t know all the actual Official TM names for these tropes, so most are made up. also, you might notice the regular trope list (part 1 of this headcanon) is significantly longer. this is because kaj has a few main inverted tropes but tons more regular ones, since tropes are like atoms: they make up everything. i just wanted to focus on the few inversions that created her character and let the rest come naturally! under a read more for length. ** also as of 7/6/19 part one isn’t done yet. yes i know please don’t shame me ok IM GETTING TO IT

fridged woman (aka back from the dead)—

for this one i took inspiration from laura moon from american gods, with a few tweaks (love neil gaiman, but some of the things about her character are...a bit squicky). unlike a good number of women in media, kaj isn’t shoved over gently and pronounced dead so that a man can grow from her pain. in fact, she’s shot in the head twice, pronounced dead, & buried. while her “death” means more pain and character development for the characters surrounding her, it means pain and character development for her, too. truth be told, she survives a hell of a lot more than any average person should, especially one with her low luck stat. half of this is the fun and wacky way new vegas’ world works (obviously, no real person could survive all this), but also because of her good ol’ courier determination. things that should’ve fridged kaj but haven’t include: two shots to the head, numerous combat scrapes, being stabbed, having her brain/heart/spine removed, having a bomb collar attached to her neck, killing an entire fortification of trained legionnaires, stepping on landmines, etc etc. the courier is pretty much the bruce willis of fallout.

world ending vengeance—

specifically applies to certain characters. while most others who piss kaj off get the full brunt of her wrath (see: caesar, mr. house, elijah, general oliver, ulysses), benny, along with dr. mobius & the think tank & mcnamara*, get a pass. in fact, she lets him go not once or twice, but on three separate occasions, even knowing he’s likely to betray her again. the reason why? not even kaj knows. some people speculate it’s because she likes him / slept with him (incorrect; she liked house to a degree, and slept with caesar); others speculate it’s because they’re so similar (also incorrect; she shared an alarming number of similarities with ulysses & elijah). the theory that comes closest to the truth is that she pities him. it fits in line her past behavior with mobius & the think tank, who were physically unable to see the effects of their actions and thus were spared a horrible fate. likewise, kaj seems to have judged benny to be innocent in her own personal court, and though he continues to be a thorn in her side again and again, she refuses to “sentence” him for anything. it helps his cause that his plan helped her take over vegas, and he created yes man, one of the only living beings she’s ever fully trusted. also a slight inversion of kaj’s maneater / black widow trope; the one person she truly should seduce and kill, she doesn’t.

that said, benny doesn’t get away from their encounters without any punishment—after narrowly escaping being crucified, both kaj and benny have matching rope burns around their wrists. it’s her morbid idea of a joke.

*mcnamara doesn’t fit within this trope, but kaj spares the bos for veronica & christine’s sake, despite yes man’s warnings. also for the off chance that they might convert to being her allies (they don’t, and this choice helps lend itself to more BOS trouble all over the wasteland).

white man cowboy—

kind of a simple inversion that’s been done before, but an important one and one that i like a lot. for starters, the “john wayne” cowboy is a bastardization of a history that was made up of ethnic minorities and whitewashed for hollywood aesthetic (also fuck you john wayne). while none of my research has come up with anything about women of color or nonbinary people in the western scene, only moc (whether this is intentional or not, i’m not sure), i still wanted to write kaj as non-male. frankly, this is because i wanted her to be an inversion of tired tropes, and that included being a debonair, byronic woman / non gender conforming hero (think gentleman jack) instead of a debonair, byronic white dude. we’ve got 20 of those for every fleshed out woman/enby on screen, lbr. kaj is also a femme fatale, but only by coincidence; she’s more of a wandering heart breaker than a necessarily dangerous woman, much like many of the heroes on screen.

i also find that non-men of color are one of the most underrepresented minorities in fiction—even media that celebrates diversity simplifies them down (hamilton), or centers their narrative and entire purpose around a man (hamilton, again). nevermind nonbinary people / trans folk. for that reason, i wanted kaj’s story to be about a woman of color / someone who doesn’t conform to expectations and doesn’t allow herself to be put in the sidelines for a white person or a male to lead her life. and regardless of whether a woman filling this swaggering, womanizing cowboy role is accurate to history or not, fallout’s setting lends itself an air of exaggeration, so i felt it was appropriate to include her here, instead of arguing with people over whether someone like her existed in actual history (my suspicions say yes, and that these people have simply been erased from the narrative for the convenience of certain people’s feelings, but still).

smarter than you look / deadly doctor (this one actually has a tvtropes page! look it up!)—

from the deadly doctor page : ‘ surely the ultimate example of the morally ambiguous doctorate. one reason for this is due to all his/her training : while having advanced knowledge on the human body can be used to save people, it also gives all the knowledge on how to injure and kill people with minimal effort by knowing all the body's weak points. some more sympathetic examples equate to the medical version of a well-intentioned extremist, who may certainly have good (or at least sympathetic/understandable) intentions but ruthless medical ethics. ’

one of the most important things kaj took from her thorough education is medical training—unable to depend on anyone after being traumatized, trusting any doctor who happened along to treat her illnesses was out of the question. she was also smart enough to know the original kaj wouldn’t be around to heal her up forever. thus, she began her training as a self preservation instinct; but over time, as she grew and relearned how to be compassionate and empathetic, she decided to use healing for good, too. trained as a young girl by the original kaj, and then later trained officially as a combat medic by the ncr, kaj has spent a countless amount of hours inside army tents, healing wounds and assisting doctors with tough cases. she even keeps a medical bag on her person for exactly that sort of situation (especially since supplies in the mojave aren’t exactly easy to dig up). though she’s a big scientist in general (the big mt saw to that), medicine is her specialty. she’s even stitched up her own wounds, though it’s not something she particularly enjoys (it takes a lot of whiskey and something for her to bite down on).

for reference, consider this scene of anton from no country for old men (TW: he’s performing self surgery, so it’s pretty gruesome). though both anton and kaj’s lifestyles are rough and even sadistic at times, they both still have medical training—if not to protect others, then to at least protect themselves. and like anton, it shows kaj’s inability to trust anyone with her most important commodity: herself. this makes her surgery in the big empty doubly as horrifying, given she took specific pains for something like this to not happen. it’s why she refuses to leave without all of her organs (also, stubbornness). all of this is just one of the ways kaj is way more ... well, everything than she looks. which leads into...

underestimate me if you dare, aka femme fatale (sort of?)—

though fallout prides itself on being a soft reset on the world, people’s perceptions of minorities are still ... iffy, due to real world influences by the creators. thus, the people around kaj often jump to assumptions about her based on her identity—mostly, that she’s weak. once, it offended her, but now it’s a perception that she encourages. after all, she’s not flat out strong like your usual hero, but is more of a hamlet-type; smart, perceptive, fast, and willing to strike from the shadows. it’s hard to do any of that if you’re putting on a big performance about your power (though admittedly, she’s been known to go big or go home if she’s planning on killing everyone; if she’s not faking nice and telling you what you wanna hear, trouble’s ahead).

of course, the reality is that kaj is a powerhouse. but these perceptions about her supposed weakness are why posing as a legion member is so easy—those who think she’s weak underestimate her or keep their distance, which gives her leave to do what she wants. she’s viewed more like a pet than a person by most, and though it frustrates her at times to pretend, it also gives her leave to do more, than if she were to simply pose as a man.

all that said, kaj doesn’t exactly qualify as a femme fatale. most of her lovers are just information givers, and they escape from their interaction unharmed. kaj killing her bed mates is actually less likely than her just sparing them and letting them go, none the wiser. of course, you kill one tyrant (maybe two or three) and suddenly you’re a black widow—
