Carlos normally prides himself on being a positive and optimistic guy. He's able to find hope and happiness even in the darkest of times and if his friends and family are struggling, he's always just around the corner, ready to offer company and encouraging words. It's not like it's a hardship for him, he's always looked out for other people, it's part of who he is.

But there are days, as rare as they might be, where Carlos doesn't know what's up or down, right or wrong. There are days where he too will drown in sadness or repressed anger, where the world is so dark, he fears he'll never find his way back to the light. The thing is, he's always dealt with these days on his own, he knows the protocol. But now there's someone else, someone who is so closely tied to his life and emotions that Carlos has no way of hiding himself away until the storm passes.

But he tries. He tries because the possibility that he'll sweep TK up in his hurricane of emotions without meaning to, that he'll pull him down right with him, is outright terrifying. And it's not that he thinks TK is weak and won't be able to handle it but because Carlos feels so strongly, so wholly, so all-consumingly. He knows of the weight that it carries, how much strength it costs, and it wouldn't be the first time someone ran away from him because of it. He didn't blame them and he wouldn't blame TK if he decided that it was too much but Carlos has become selfish where TK is concerned. Carlos knows, with shocking clarity, that a world without TK in his life is not one he wants to be a part of. 

It was only a matter of time before the hurricane hit. It's not like Carlos didn't expect things to go bad one day, he just didn't think it was going to be as terrible as it ended up being. They got the call halfway into his shift and it had shaken him up so badly, his body hadn't stopped trembling even after he had sat down on his desk hours later. His boss had taken one look at him and sent him home with 11 hours left of his shift. Carlos didn't even argue, simply packed his stuff, dragged his heavy feet outside to his car and drove himself home on autopilot.  

And so when Carlos arrives at his place in the early morning hours to find TK fast asleep on the left side of his bed, something in him crumbles; quiet and slow, like leaves falling from a tree. He stands there on the threshold, staring at TK's sleeping form like it's the only thing holding him together, and doesn't have the strength to take the last couple of steps to warmth and comfort. He feels his shoulders droop, his body growing heavy with exhaustion and he turns around, heading back into the darkness he came from. 

He sits down on the couch, his elbows resting on his thighs and his head pillowed on the palms of his hands, and wills his racing thoughts to calm. He feels his heart beat frantically in his chest as if it's trying to claw its way out and Carlos feels a coldness seep into his skin that he knows will linger even long after this day has ended. It's always like that and still, it doesn't make it easier. The pain in his heart continues to grow, leaving his chest a gaping wound, and Carlos feels himself slipping into a deep, dark hole. 

It's not until someone calls out to him, his name spoken in a hushed voice, that Carlos' mind stops drifting and returns to the here and now. He looks up with great difficulty, his head like stone on his neck and squints his eyes to see in the dark. TK's figure comes into view then, blurry at first but as he steps into the cone of light provided by the small lamp on the living room table, Carlos is granted a pair of beautiful green eyes and feels a little bit of sanity return to his frantic mind. 

"What are you doing up?" he asks, looking away quickly, and as his voice cracks slightly, he clears his throat. "You should go back to bed."

TK stands in front of him, his eyes a little foggy from sleep and frowns, reaching out a tentative hand to brush his fingers against Carlos' wrist. 

"No use with you being down here, is there?" he says and Carlos' throat closes up with emotions he can't grasp. He wants to reach out for TK and pull him close but he also wants to leave and hide himself away where no one would find him. 

"Are you okay?" TK asks, worry etched into his voice and Carlos tenses with a new wave of anxiety. 

"I'm fine," he blurts out far too quickly and judging by how TK's frown deepens, he knows he's been caught in his lie. "Go back to sleep, you've got a shift in a couple of hours." 

TK considers him for a few seconds but then he merely shrugs. "I don't sleep well without you anyway so I'd rather stay right here with you." 

Carlos doesn't respond, blindly staring at a grey spot on the floor and wondering if TK is going to let it go and go back to bad. As he watches TK shift from one foot to the other, he knows that's not going to happen. 

"Do you mind if I?" TK asks after a few minutes of silence, stepping right into Carlos' space and he's so close all of a sudden that Carlos can't help but look up. TK's gaze is indecipherable but he raises his hand in question, leaving Carlos to stare at him confusedly. He smiles a little then and if Carlos wasn't so out of his mind he would've sworn he saw his cheeks turn pink. TK puts his palm against Carlos' chest, pushing a little, and Carlos' body goes easily. TK plants himself on Carlos' lap then, winding an arm around Carlos' shoulder and as he presses close to get himself comfortable, something in Carlos' chest flutters. He closes his eyes for a second, taking a deep breath in and TK watches him silently as he calms himself. When Carlos opens his eyes again TK is still looking at him. 

"Hi," he says sweetly and reaches out a hand, letting his fingers dance across Carlos' face. 

"Hi," Carlos breathes back, eyes roaming across TK's face in both gratitude and shock. His arms have found their way around TK's back like they were meant to hold him, fingers restlessly tapping against the soft fabric of what Carlos knows to be one of his old hoodies. It's a little baggy across the shoulders and chest but TK doesn't seem to mind. They smell like you and they're comfortable, he had shrugged when Carlos had asked him about it and Carlos remembers the warm feeling that had settled in his gut upon seeing TK in his clothes for the first time. He really wishes he could have that feeling back but all he feels right now is emptiness. 

"Are you gonna tell me what's wrong?" TK asks and there it is again, that ugly feeling of dread. His fingers flex instinctively but if his grip on TK's hip is painful, TK doesn't let it show. Carlos' anxiety must show on his face though because TK's thumb over his brow stills, his whole face etched in worry. 

"Babe." 

Carlos has to squeeze his eyes shut again, willing down the panic that bubbles in his gut but as TK presses gentle kisses to his forehead and cheek, his hands carefully framing Carlos' face, the panic settles again. He needs to tell him, he thinks, he needs to get it out before he drowns in it. 

"There was an emergency," he croaks out before he can change his mind but pictures start flooding his head and his throat closes up again. His eyes shoot open in fright but TK is right there to soothe him.

"You're okay," he says, "You're with me. Nothing's gonna happen to you, I promise." 

And something about these words makes Carlos' mind stop spinning. He looks at TK then, really looks at him, as if he's seeing him for the very first time and all of the anger, all the hopelessness and sadness dissipate into resentment.

"It's not about what happens to me," he confesses, "It's about what happens to others when I'm not there to prevent it." 

TK's heart aches at the empty look he finds in Carlos' eyes and so he holds him a little tighter and kisses his head more fiercely. Carlos breathes him in and the hand that still rests on TK's hip flexes with anxiety. He wills his troubling thoughts away and instead allows himself to take comfort in TK's gentle touches. TK is infinitely patient with him and after a few more moments of silence, Carlos begins to explain. He tells TK about the emergency and the woman who called, fearing for her life. He describes how she looked when he arrived, how scared she was of Carlos getting too close and then he talks about the husband, blinded by rage, and how he tried to hurt Carlos too. He's quick to soothe a worried TK whose eyes have begun scanning him for injuries before Carlos could even finish his explanation. Carlos thinks about ending the story here, with the happy ending, but something in him urges him to continue, to talk about how this woman will probably never fully recover from what she experienced. TK says he can't know that; this woman is a survivor, she can overcome anything. And Carlos wants to agree, argue that yes, she is a survivor, but she'll spend the rest of her life questioning everything that led up to that day. Carlos knows, he's seen it up close, and TK squeezes the hand he's grabbed sometime during Carlos' explanation in a quick attempt to offer comfort.

"My sister is the strongest person I know," Carlos whispers, his voice wavering with emotion, "but she's never been the same since." 

TK nods in understanding, his own head a whirlwind of thoughts. He tries to find the right words knowing this is not something he can fix, that anyone can fix. 

"What happened to your sister is not your fault," TK argues and Carlos is already shaking his head in disagreement, "It's not! And what happened to that woman isn't either. Carlos, you saved her life today. That's a good thing." 

"Then why do I feel like my heart is split in two?" His voice breaks and Carlos knows that it'll take him a while to find it again. 

TK huffs out a shuddering breath and takes Carlos' face back into his hands, tilting his head up with gentle firmness. 

"Because you're a good person, Carlos, the best one I know, and you try to save as many people as you can because that's the kind of man that you are. But you're human. You can only do so much." 

Carlos looks at him and the pain TK finds in his eyes is palpable. It's a little shocking to him, how Carlos can hold himself together right now. There are tears in his eyes but not a single one falls and TK wonders if maybe this is what Carlos needs, to let go of all these emotions and just let himself be, no matter how violent and ugly it would turn out to be. But Carlos is still looking at him like he doesn't believe a word TK just said and TK simply can't let that stand. 

"How do you not realise how important and special you are?" 

Carlos shakes his head again but TK is quick to interfere. He leans forward, softly resting their foreheads together. 

"I need you to listen carefully to what I'm about to say, okay? You're a hero, Carlos, to so many people out there but especially to me." 

Carlos looks at him with wide eyes and TK swallows down the tears that threaten to fall. 

"You saved me," TK whispers, "So please let me save you too." 

As TK carefully reaches into Carlos' open wound, his aching heart now laid openly in the palms of TK's hands and Carlos' eyes a mirror to his own vulnerability, TK realises the depth of his feelings and finds himself unable to keep them to himself. 

"I love you," he breathes into the space between them and as he spreads balm on Carlos' wound, Carlos slowly starts to heal. His heart skips a beat in TK's gentle hands and then another, and another, until it finally returns to its old rhythm. Carlos reaches for TK then, pulling him down so their lips can meet and TK pours every bit of the love he feels into that kiss. As Carlos takes it all in, tugging TK close until there's no more space left, he realises that he's not alone and that what he does, who he is, is enough. At least for someone. And perhaps that is all he can ask for in times as dark and terrifying as these.

TK smiled back. ”I love you, daddy” he said softly and handed the water bottle back. ”I love you too baby. Cuddle Eddie, I’ll be back in a sec, just need to check the doors” Carlos said and capped the water bottle and put it back on the nightstand. TK closed his eyes and rested his head on Eddie’s chest and cuddled up to him, letting out soft sounds of content as he did.

When Carlos came back to the bedroom, they were both fast asleep. Grabbing the blankets from the bottom of the bed, Carlos pulled them over the two before climbing in and wrapping his hands around Eddie and TK. It didn’t take long before he fell asleep as well.

Wow so lowkey this is kinda bad and there’s not a lot of Harry in this right now but this is more of a intro chapter and a setting up the story chapter to what’s to come! If anything confuses you feel free to dm me. I also take requests so please feel free to ask as well :)

Summary: Being the daughter of Moana did have its perks from time to time. The ocean who once was a friend of hers had now grown to be a friend of yours and you wouldn’t have known what you would’ve done without it. However one day might come to pass where you will need to know the truth about your past. The real truth. Because all though you had been swimming with the ocean and talking to tefiti all your life, being at auradon was about to change everything and bring the biggest twist to your life, that your mom might not even be your mom and that a certain pirate was soon to be someone to love and not to hate.

Suddenly light, light everywhere as you took your hands off your eyes and took in all the sights to see.

You were currently in a game of hide and seek with your favorite friend, the ocean.

“Hmmmm I wonder where you went ocean....” you began, sarcastically looking around. “Maybe..... there! Got you!”

Pointing at the water, suddenly the ocean seemed to rise up and nod in response. You laughed at the body of water, clearly it having no where else to hide every time so you were always destined to win.

“Alright how about best 50 outa 100?” You asked, tying up your H/C locks up.

“Yeah I don’t think so little one”

You froze at the voice already knowing who it was.

“Hey Uncle Maui! I was just about to go to bed I swear but isn’t the sunset just so beautiful? haha...”

You tried so hard to stall your time but your Uncle always could see through just like he could with your mom.

“I’m sorry Y/N,” he began. “You have a big day tomorrow remember, first day at a great school with great new people! Better than being stuck on this small little island village for the rest of your life! Now come on, you need to be in bed right now so you can wake up early tomorrow and wish everyone bye.”

The new school he was talking about was in a kingdom called Auradon, meaning that the school was obviously fit to be called “Auradon Prep” run by a King named Rolland and his wife. You wanted so desperately not to go, you weren’t a princess or elegant at all! You were adventurous, outspoken and the daughter of the village Chieftess, yet you would have to fake a smile and go anyway to please your mother and make the village proud.

You sighed and bid the ocean goodnight returning to your cot and resting for the next day.

When the morning did come you made sure to wake up extra early to do all your favorite things on the island for a final time. You helped Hei Hei escape a crazy cook, played tag with Pua, hide and seek with the ocean, and had a lovely girl talk with Tefiti to whom you poured your heart and soul out to.

It was soon time to leave and You hugged your mother tightly, tears pouring down your cheeks. You really would miss the island, a friend as much as the ocean and much more, a home.

Saying your goodbyes to everyone, a black limo then pulled up, the royal car to Auradon. Out stepped a young boy, no older than you, who looked to be about fourteen or fifteen. He smiled a bright smile at you, the creases of his eyes going up in the process.

“Hello I’m Ben!” He exclaimed. “I’m the soon to be future king of Auradon. It was my idea to invite you to join our school, I’m trying to branch out to more students from around the world and you just happen to be the first person I chose! I’m really glad you’re joining us and I hope we can get to know each other some more and become good friends!”

He stuck his hand out for you to shake smiling all the while long. Shy and like a small child, you hid behind your mother slightly peering over at him. You couldn’t help but stare into his eyes. You saw something in them, almost longing, as if in for a friend. You swallowed any ounce of fear you had and walked forward towards him grabbing his hand and watching his smile somehow increase even more.

“I’m Y/N. I hope we can become good friends too.”

About three to four years later and here you were. A young woman, sprawled all over her bed, studying for a stupid final that was going to kill her.

“Ughhhhhh” you groaned out in frustration.

“Come on Y/N it’s really not that hard I promise!” said your roommate of almost three years now Lonnie. She was a beautiful girl and was one of your closest friends. Being the daughter of Mulan gave her excellent agility and intelligence as well.

“I know it’s not but it’s just... UGHHH!!!” You screeched in annoyance and anger at the problem on the paper.

“Knockity Knockity! How are my favorite princesses doing?” you heard a voice say, looking up at the doorframe to see it was only the new king and your first ever friend, Ben.

“Ok one im not your favorite princess for sure, and two Y/N is the daughter of the Chieftess! Not a princess.” Said Lonnie knowing how annoyed you’d get whenever someone confused the two.

You slowly perked up from the bed at the sight of Ben. You never got to see your best friend due to all of the new duties he had and all the new students he had to deal with.

“Ah Mr. Bennie Boo! How can we help you?” You said teasing him with the nickname his ex Audrey used to call him and his current girlfriend Mal, who kept it alive.

“Haha funny” he began, “hey I actually wanted to ask you a personal question Y/N/N...”

“Oh sure! Of course! Lonnie can you give us a sec?” You asked your brunette friend with apologetic eyes. She simply nodded and smiled leaving, probably going to find her crush Jay and talk with him more.

Ben took a seat next to you on your bed and suddenly became serious.

“Y/N... it’s about Mal. Something has been off with her lately and I don’t know what! I’m asking you because she seems to trust you a lot and tell you everything and I just need to know what’s happening... am I doing something wrong? Is she not happy with me?”

It was true, you and the VK kids had gotten very close when they arrived at Auradon. At first they seemed to hate everyone but because you guys could relate very well with both feeling new to the place and since you weren’t so girly they eventually almost took you in as a VK yourself.

You assured Ben it was nothing and told him to give Mal some space. Yes you knew what she was going through but couldn’t just give away all her secrets to him and betray her trust. You just told him she was going through things and needed to think alone.

He sadly smiled but agreed with your advice, talking a bit more about how life had been treating both of you before he had to return to more kingly duties that awaited him.

About two hours later and you were still having no luck in studying for the stupid final that awaited you. Because Lonnie had decided to bring Jay to your shared room to talk and giggle, rather loudly might you add, you simply moved your self to Mal and Evies room thankful no one was there so there would be silence.

Yet not even two minutes after you got there Carlos arrived with duke in tow ready to chill and play around with the dog. When you had first met the VKs you had to admit you had an adorable little crush on him but now... now it was so much more. You began twisting your hair around your finger from the ponytail it was in nervously but tried to remain calm none the less.

“C-Carlos” you began, “as amazing as you are and as much as I love duke I’m really trying to study! Do you think you and duke could possibly play at the park?” It hurt to ask that as the truth was you really didn’t want him to leave but you just needed to study. Little did you know it hurt him a bit too.

“Sorry, I promise to be a good boy and listen to you ahaha” he said getting ready to leave but coming over for a hug before he did so.

“Atta boy! Good boy!” You said playfully giving him a hug and a nice, gentle rub on his head. This definitely earned a small content sigh from the boy but he simply played it off as nothing more.

“I’ll see ya later Y/N/N!” he exclaimed now happy and ready to play with duke. You chucked to yourself and prepared to continue studying when not even ten seconds later Mal came bursting in hyperventilating.

“FUCK STUDYING ITS NEVER GONNA GOSH DARN HAPPEN!!” you swore frustrated at this point but then immediately softened as you saw one of the closest friends you had here burst down in tears. You immediately ran to her side and engulfed her into a hug which she returned sobbing all the way.

“Mal, Mal! Girl are you ok?! What’s wrong? What happened!?!” You asked bombarding her with multiple questions.

“I don’t belong here” she sobbed. “I just wish I could go back to the isle, I can’t be the perfect princess they want me to be...”

you knew you shouldn’t have said it but you were desperate to make your friend happy. You’d do anything to see her smile... even if it meant it could hurt Ben in the process...

“I can take you there... follow me”

And now you were here, at the edge of Auradon overlooking the sea and the isle of the lost sitting on it.

“How are we supposed to get there? This is stupid Y/N.... you don’t have any transportation at all, any magic, nothing! We’re just standing here on the sand and it’s itchy and cold!!! Why did I ever agree to this....” Mal ranted upset and over the whole situation already.

“You’re right I don’t have a vehicle, I don’t have magic, or pixie dust, or a mermaid tail or nothing. I’m an ordinary person. But I do have one thing. I have an old friend...” you stated, satisfied with your answer and began walking towards the water. Mal rolled her eyes thinking you had completely lost it, waiting for your feet to hit the water when suddenly they didn’t and you were walking further and further out and the water around you was retracting more and more.

“Woah....” she gasped amazed at what was happening to her friend.

“Hey... long time no see huh?” You said meekly at the walls of water surrounding you. A mass of water rose higher above you, getting close enough to where you could feel drops on your face, and it nodded.

“Ocean... I know I haven’t spoken to you in a while and I miss the island and you and Tefiti and Mom and Maui and...” you stopped, realizing you were ranting and paused for a bit before continuing. “I need you to help me and a friend cross. We need to get to the isle. I know you might feel forgotten for all the years I never spoke to you but I really need this old friend... I always thought about you and really have wanted to talk! I just haven’t had so much time but I love you and I need this... I promise... once it’s all over I’ll come back and we can play hide and seek like the good old days haha...” you finished with teary eyes and a hopeful smile.

Mal watched in amusement at the sentimental scene playing before her. The mass of water inched closer to you and sucked up your

H/C locks into a swirl of water as if to playfully tease you. You giggled and took that as a “yes” and an “I forgive you” urging Mal to edge near so you both could cross.

After introducing the two you had made it closer to the isle and one more step closer to Mal’s happiness. What you didn’t know however was it was also one step closer to revealing who you truly were.

As you were wandering on the shore of the Isle with Mal you began to discuss more of a plan to everything. After bidding farewell to the ocean you both would go to dizzy tremaine’s salon and give Mal a new doo and you some new “blending in” clothes. It was really the only way to not stand out in the giant crowd of thieves and beggars.

When you had finally arrived at the place Mal shared a long over due reunion with the little girl and introduced you to her. She was quite kind to you despite it being the isle and gave you a bunch of leather outfits covered in spikes to make you fit in more. To add a finishing touch she let your hair down, letting some natural curls fall all around you. You thanked her thousands and told Mal you were going to go out and explore to which she warned you to be careful and then let you leave.

Among many annoying sketchy shops you came across while wandering the isle you found something that drew you to it. A voodoo shop. One that could tell things about you that you didn’t even know.

You couldn’t understand why but next thing you knew you were walking inside the green door to the very sketchy shop. As you looked around you saw a very young girl who looked about dizzys age. Once she saw you a smile spread to her face.

“Hello miss! Step right up! Have a seat! I can tell you things you’ve needed to know your whole life” she said with a gleam in her eye. And so you did. You sat in the seat at the red clothed table and watched her intently.

“Pick a card any card!” She exclaimed. “You can’t see the card but I will. I’ll read whatever facts are on the card about your life.” You knew there was no way any of this could be true but you just simply nodded and picked a random card anyway.

“Well miss lets see... Definitely not a princess but definitely not a VK either so more in the middle. Daughter of a Chieftess I’m guessing huh?” She asked. You nodded again.

“Well” she continued, “you like the water and the ocean is a friend of yours. You are really close friends with a certain group of VKs and a certain King may I add. and.... woah! What do we have here! Some family history and drama!”

“W-what? What is it?” You began more curious and curious to know what could possibly be wrong with your family.

“Honey have you ever asked about your father?”

“N-no” you responded. You had always wondered about that. Your mother never seemed like the type to settle down or fall for a guy but yet you were still here somehow.

“Honey I hate to break it to you,” she started. “But your mother isn’t your mother. Your real mother had you and couldn’t keep you and so she tossed you in a basket into the sea. The ocean washed you up on the shore of the island of your mother and that’s where your mother adopted and raised you.”

“W-what!?? But then... who are my real parents! What happened what....” you couldn’t think straight, your mind was a mess of thoughts.

“You’re mother was a kind soul. A Native American named tiger lily born and raised on Neverland. She was a daughter of a great chief as well and fell greatly in love with a man. Eventually this man broke her heart and left her for another girl leaving your mother devastated. When he finally wanted to have some fun again he... I’m so sorry.... he raped your mother and created you... Tiger lily in fear that he would find you and hurt you sent you away to where the ocean saved you.”

You could not breathe! Everything was getting tighter but you just had to know one more thing.

“Who... who was the man?”

“They call him.... Peter Pan.” And with that you were out. You slammed some money on the counter and ran, running as far as you could away from everything. Tears began to spill down your cheeks, the world feeling all too small. You despised your father.. how could he? And how could your mother never tell you? What was happening?!??

You were so focused on every new thought swimming in your head you didn’t notice someone was walking in front of you and you crashed right into them.

Jay feels so, so stupid. The movie is really loud and the others are looking at him and his shoulder is falling asleep and, Jesus, this was a dumb move. He knew exactly what was going to happen and here he is, suffering, just like he predicted.

Carlos snorts in his sleep and Evie suppresses a giggle. Jay looks at her sharply. “What? Something in the movie terribly funny?”

Evie raises an eyebrow at him. “You are so cute, thinking you can intimidate me,” she says. “No, not the movie. I’m more laughing at you suffering for love.”

All things considered, he’s lucky that he doesn’t blush, ever. Because if he were to, he’s pretty sure he’d be doing it now. “Bite me,” he replies, because he can’t really tell her she’s wrong. It seems like everyone knows by now that he’s in love with Carlos anyway. Well, except Carlos, who’s currently snoring away on his shoulder.

“You’re a sad, strange little man,” Mal says, frowning at him. “Why not just, I don’t know, tell him?”

He raises an eyebrow at her and counters, “None of your business.”

Mal and Evie roll their eyes in unison.

Suddenly, there’s an explosion onscreen. Carlos jolts awake. “What? What did I miss?” He looks around and sighs. “Sorry, guys. Don’t mean to fall asleep. It’s just that…”

“This movie’s super boring and Jay should never be allowed to pick the movies ever again?” Mal suggests.

Carlos turns sharply to Jay. “I like your movie, Jay,” he says. Jay’s typically cold heart warms a little at that. Even though Jay picked the movie specifically because it was boring, he appreciates that Carlos will back him up.

But he digresses. “It’s okay,” Jay says, shrugging. “You can go back to sleep.”

Carlos rubs at the back of his neck. “Are you sure?” he asks. “I don’t want to tire out your shoulder.”

Jay just shrugs. But after a moment, Carlos smiles. “Compromise,” he says simply, and then brings his legs up onto the couch and puts his head on Jay’s lap before gently drifting off to sleep.

He sits completely still, only blinking and breathing for a full two minutes, until he hears a ding from his phone. He pulls it out almost robotically, doing his best not to wake Carlos.

After the movie ends, Mal and Evie both go back to their dorm, leaving Jay to his own devices as Carlos continues to sleep soundly. He plays on his phone for a while, checking his texts and some apps and such. Then he reads for a while from a book he has downloaded to his phone. After that, he just sits quietly and contemplates.

Why not just, I don’t know, tell him?

Stupid Mal.

He looks down at Carlos, who looks so peaceful in sleep. It’s unbearable. His face is blank and soft, and his eyes are fluttering gently. His hair, which is currently curling up around his ears and desperately needs to be cut, falls a little into his face. He looks absolutely beautiful. Jay is so fucked.

Suddenly and impulsively, he reaches up his hand. It hovers so it rests just above the spot where hair meets skin. It must itch, he rationalizes, and so he should be a good friend and push the hair out of Carlos’s face. Or… would that be too weird? He lowers his hand. And then raises it again. Lowered. Raised. Lowered. Raised. Low -

“Oh my God, just pet my hair already.’

Jay nearly jumps out of his skin. Carlos lies still, like he hadn’t just spoken and scared the crap out of Jay, but smiles all the same like the cat that ate the canary.

There’s a long pause where nothing happens. Then Jay decides, Fuck it.

He rakes his fingers through Carlos’s hair. The white strands are unbelievably soft and silk, and they fall away from his head with little effort. Carlos grins even broader, then nuzzles back into Jay’s thigh with a contented sigh. Jay supposes he ought to pick terrible movies more often.

~23rd January 2019~

My brain was engulfed by all the things that I could potentially do to help the knee to recover and the decision on what options I will need to take on the W walk to make sure I complete it with a strong end rather than making things worse. The journey was in parts excruciating thinking that I may need to give up on some of the challenges ahead. I hated the thought that I will need to give up part of the journey so that I survive the entire walk.

On the way to Pehoe, I had to keep reminding myself that it’s all about managing the pain and the recovery for the next big thing which was El Chalten, where I would need to be able to climb. Using the W walk as a recovery was as good as a plan as any and it gave me the strength to make smarter decision on what I should and shouldn’t do.

We stopped in Puerto Natales to stock up, do last minute shopping and lunch before we head over to the campsite. This was where we picked up our guides for the walk, Roberto Carlos, Gada and Fran. The town is a typical pitstop for people heading to the park, with plenty of shops to buy all the essentials such as sleeping bags, mats, thermals an everything you need except for liners. Yes, I was in need of one (not desperate) and apparently no one uses it in this country.

It was great once we drove out of town, with picture postcard scene all the way to Pehoe. The mountains shone in the glorious sunshine, we had to just stop to take photos and I was trying to take in the fact that I’m heading to one of the most beautiful places in the world. I realised at that time that I haven’t really researched about most of the places I travelled to and I kinda like it because I get to see it with my own eyes first before the photos that were plastered all over the internet. So much better.

Pehoe campsite was fully equipped with all the facilities perfect for preparing for our adventure for the next few days and just a short drive away from the dock where we will be taking the catamaran to Paine Grande campsite. Busy evening with everyone getting their trek bag ready and shower before dinner. After dinner we were briefed on the four days walk and in detail what we’re going to do on the first day with the options for someone like me who was still managing the knee pain. It was an early night for an early morning start.

~24th January 2019~

Day one of the walk, it’s breakfast and a short drive to the dock to take the catamaran to Paine Grande campsite to drop our stuff before embarking on the first walk up the Grey Glacier. The campsite was very well established for hikers and campers, with clean shower rooms and toilets plus restaurant and bar. Somehow I had in my head that facilities will be minimum and basic, it was well above expectation.

The walk up to the first view point was gentle and just what I needed for the day. It was led by Roberto Carlos and I did my best to keep up with his pace reminding myself at the same time to be aware of how the knees and hips were doing. The view was spectacular even though the glacier was quite a distance away. I was in the mountains with an awesome view, I was content.

When Gada said that the group was doing well and that all of us should go on to the next viewpoint I had to stop her and request if I could head back since the route to the next viewpoint will be a decent, which mean that the way back will involve a steep ascend before the descend back to campsite. Little that I knew, quite a few people decided to head back as well. Fran took a group of us back and we had lunch in the sheltered forest area on the way back.

When we were back at the campsite, I was assessing the knees to make sure they’re happy with the walk so far. A little niggle here and there, apart from that it was all good and I knew I made the right decision to return after the first viewpoint. We hung around in the bar playing cards and waited for the other group to come back before we shower and eat. It was a very satisfying day altogether. I was feeling good at this point.

~25th January 2019~

After breakfast, we head out with all of our stuff on our back and walk the Patagonian flat to Italiano, where we will drop our stuff and grab our day bag to start the walk up to the French valley and Britanico. This was where if I’ve packed appropriately, I’ll be fine and I was.

Patagonian flat is basically what an Andean or Inca flat is, a bit of up and down. The walk to Italiano was pleasant and picturesque with the lakes on one side and mountains on the other. Once we’re there, it was drop, grab and go.

The walk up to the French valley started off well and as it went steeper, the niggles became constant pinch then as we approached the French valley the knee was in full complaint mode. I knew it was time to get down since we still have a long walk to the next campsite with the full load.

The hanging glaciers are nature’s way to say that it is the best designer or artist in the whole of universe. The mini avalanches tumbled through the whole valley and to wait for the rumble, it’s often to late to spot the avalanche. The sound always comes later than the action.

Emma was the only one that came back with me after French valley and the rest continue to Britanico. I would have loved to gone further but it would mean that there’s a chance I would struggle to get to the next campsite and that for me was not an option. This time Roberto Carlos led us back down to have lunch at Italiano then head over to Cuernos campsite.

A nice stroll through Patagonian flat, we saw eight condors flying high above in the mountains. When we reached the pebbled beach, we chilled out and soaked our tired hot feet in the lake. The lake water was so cold that I think it shocked my knees into getting better (I know…placebo effect, still good though).

The campsite was way smaller than Paine Grande with a mountain peak looming over our tents. During dinner, we got to know that it was Roberto Carlos’ birthday and we all sang happy birthday to him. He must thought he would getaway with us not knowing and lucky for us, Fran found out from one of his friends.

Plan for the next day will be a long walk to the last campsite, Central, and I was hoping that the walk will do the knees some good and I will be able to complete the entire walk for the last day.

~26th January 2019~

A long walk ahead of us with all of our stuff on our back through Patagonian flat. The landscapes were changing as we moved further east and the weather was warmer. Apart from the Salkantay trek, Paine Grande campsite was the only place I had to wear my thermal. Pretty good result for chasing spring and summer all year round.

We took a break in one of the most beautiful viewpoints and this place has it all, the lakes with mountains both behind and far beyond the lakes. Suddenly, the thought of those who passed on came to me together with a host of emotions, from sadness to content. I was reminded of father’s last days and how he looked like he was preparing himself, as if he knew his time was up.

Reflecting on what I was doing in the last few months, I felt almost the same thing. Am I doing all this because I know my time is short? Curious?! How I wish father was there with me, seeing the wonders of this world we lived in. I wondered whether he would be watching, watching over me like an angel. I miss him.

The lunch spot featured a large stream with fresh water from the mountains and a wall that could be climbed. I was looking at it throughout lunch time, wondering whether it was climbable and told myself not to even try.

When we saw Central in the distance, it was a relieve that we’re nearly there. Roberto was pointing out where we will be walking the next day when we passed the turn off for the route. Mirador de las Torres, the last challenge for the walk was what most people were looking forward to.

The truck, Kylie and few others who didn’t embark on this walk were waiting for us when we reached the campsite. From Paine Grande to Central, we had tents already set up for us so it’s just sleeping bag and mat to deal with. There was a dome set up for us to gather in for tea and mealtime (and for some climbing when requested/challenged so yeah, couldn’t help it really).

We had a visit to an NGO that Dragoman supports in rehabilitating some of the areas impacted by the fires in 2011 and before that. They were growing and planting trees, helping the forest along on their road to recovery.

~27th January 2019~

A very early start to avoid the crowd, said all three of them when they briefed us the night before. The route up to the mirador is exposed in some parts and narrow plus it’s the only way up and down, hence we’re going early to beat most of the crowd from Puerto Natales who are there for day trip.

I was reassured by both Gada and Fran that I’ll be ok walking all the way up to the mirador. So I walked and kept an awareness on how tired I am to make sure I’m not dragging my feet which could make it worse for my knees. Following my own pace made it better, breaking away from the front crowd and doing my thing was the best decision I’ve ever made.

We stopped for breaks in the forest as well as the refugio on the way. The top part of the climb was harsh, reminded me of some of the approaches to hard to reach crags.i was starting to wonder how I was to descent from this place with loose rocks everywhere.

Once I was at the top, I asked Roberto Carlos and Fran helped me identified three rock for me. I used the rocks to offer a prayer and hope to the mountains as I did in Abra Salkantay. Such a serene place with the three towers (Norte, Central and Sur) looming over the lagoon and us.

It was interesting walking down. I say walk but Dee, Liz and I was cruising down fast especially with places with loose rocks. It was much easier on the knees when going down fast, almost like we’re skiing down the mountain. I met an American girl who worked in Hawaii as a guide for boat tours to see dolphins and some times, whales. We had interesting conversations around working and travelling at the same time.

The rest of the day was spent chilling out and just rest until dinner time. Some went to the bar for some rewarding cocktails while I decided to stay at the campsite for some much needed quiet time. At 6pm, it was time to say goodbye to our wonderful guides and thank them for the awesome time we had on the walk. I took Fran’s contact so that I have someone to ask about climbing in South America and questions in general. It came in handy in El Chalten…hola Fitz Roy!!!

Dinner and bed, I was excited to move on to El Chalten.
