OKAY here is the completely nonserious percy jackson npmd au thats been taking up space in my brain for weeks now because it simply needs somewhere to go:
New campers-
Stephanie Lauter:
I'm not overcomplicating this one: Steph is a daughter of Aphrodite
Solomon Lauter saw the hottest woman at some party where he was campaigning, and he’s is nothing if not ‘passionate’ and successful (by design) so it worked out
As far as Steph knows until her teens her mom ran off on her dad when she was a baby, and that’s fine, she doesn't give a shit, she’s never looked into it
Until, when she’s sixteen (because somehow she’s made it this long) Grace Chasity starts a rumor, her dad sends her to Abstinence Camp and the monster in the woods chases her right into camp halfblood
She gets claimed pretty promptly and Is Not A Fan
She’s thinks it’s pretty sexist and conceited and stupid and problematic for a whileeeee and refuses to look into it any more than ‘pink and pretty and misogynistic’ which like, doesn’t go well for her but she’s nothing if not stubborn
She’s fluent in French because of her mom but she doesn’t know that until she gets to camp and is genuinely so pissed off that the one school subject she thought she was good at isn’t even on her own merit
She’s got some vague appearance manipulation stuff, and once she realizes she does she exclusively uses it to change her hair color and make her eyeliner look good
She’s probably like camp way more if she knew about it earlier but the combo of her had having kept it from her and who her mom is and all the stupid games/worship expectations piss her off and she bails on most of the events/training/campfires out of spite
She definitely uses some close up weapon like a dagger or short sword
Grace Chastity:
Grace is a daughter of Ares
(Her finding this out goes very poorly)
Im ngl i feel like somehow Ares ended up with Mark Chastity, I refuse to examine this thought but i think Mark Chastity had his first gay experience and woke up the next morning with a baby there somehow because Ares thought it would be hilarious and wanted to see what would happen
She gets chased to camp with Steph from Abstinence Camp and is fucking livid, the whole thing is insanely scareligious and ridiculous and everyone there is going to hell and she is so heated that Ares, once again thinking it’s really funny and slightly proud, claims her on the spot
Grace Chastity is out here with her sacreligious two gay dads
She really resents specifically who her dad is because in her head she is made for peace and love and spreading the word of god, she hates the idea of war or violence on principal, so she spends a lot of time at the strawberry fields or Pegusus stables because she does really like the flying horses :)
She refuses to take place in any camp activities or training and all her siblings hate her
At a certain point she’s able to harness a level of odikinesis (enhancing feelings of hatred and war) and it doesn’t go well
Chiron honestly is forcing her to stick around because he’s REALLY so very nervous about how the fuck it would go to have Grace loose on the mortal world right after she finds everything else
Her weapon is an axe

Okay so forgive me for my special little blorbo-fication of my guy but:
Pete’s a son of Nyx
He super fucking shouldn’t be, there aren’t demi-god children of Nyx, just monsters and minor gods, but him and Ted were kind of just… thought experiments? Like she was bored and very curious so she took a really shitty human and had a child with him (Ted) and then, in what Nyx’s head was barely any time at all but in human years was straight up 18 years, has another one (Pete)
Ted raises Pete for a couple years, but children of Nyx in general are just bad omens, and human children of Nyx who probably shouldn’t exist are no exception, so they get hunted down by monsters hard
Ted dies or disappears by the time Pete’s ten or eleven and he ends up at a camp
He’s a year round camper and lives in the hermes cabin because obviously Nyx doesn’t have a cabin (look okay i know that percy fixed that, but that bit of lore where any unclaimed or minor god children live at the hermes cabin is so fucked up and rife with angst and hurt/comfort potential is too much for me to resist so this is a universe where percy jackson does not exist)
His luck is horrible, like it’s a magical demigod ability how horrible his luck is and he’s well on his way to systematically having broken every single one of his bones one by one, they know him so well in the apollo cabin
NO ONE (and I mean NO ONE) likes him and he’s considered a camp wide jinx so he takes one for the team and personally exempts himself from any team events like capture the flag because no one is willing to have him on their side
A lot of newer campers generally assume he’s an Athena kid because he really enjoys learning/strategy/by-the-book stuff because it’s a lot easier than trying to get involved with the more dangerous athletic shit
Because his mom is the goddess of night he’s very into outer space
His weapon is a bow and arrow, but he’s pretty good with most range weapons/anything that he can calculate aim for
Ruth Fleming:
Ruth is a daughter of Demeter and she’s pissed about it
Her dad told her about being a demigod a couple years before she went to camp but he didn’t know who her mom was so she got very very into greek mythos and shit and was convinced she was a daughter of Athena or Aphrodite or someone else nine-year-old-girl-cool and was fucking devestated when it was the goddess of farming
Like, she’ll do all the things she’s expected to (helping in the strawberry fields, weeding, etc..) but she’s going to complain about it
She doesn’t even have any cool powers to go with it!!! it’s so unfair >:(
She’s also involved with the camp’s theater department and is convinced it’s rigged against her because of who her mom is in favor of Apollo and Dionysus kids (in fairness…. it probably is) which is why she’s always stuck on tech
She’s definitely got a crush of Richie’s dad
She’s a summer only camper for sure, monsters don’t hunt her down for any reason in particular or en mass so she can get away with it and fight off the ones that do, but she does kind of take offense to the fact that even monsters don't want her (even if they’d just kill her)
Her childhood greek mythology obsession carries over so she knows every dumb little detail about every myth and will bring it up unprompted
Her main weapon is just a celestial bronze sword but i feel like when she first got to camp at 12 she bribed a child of Iris to change the color of it so it looks like… rose gold lmao
Richie Lipschitz:
Richie is a son of Dionysus
And sure, okay, I know what you're thinking: that doesn’t really fit…?
But to that I say oh boy it does, just not for Richie
For his twin brother Trevor however–
Richie is kind of like the black sheep of his cabin, not that there is many of them, because his brother is perfectly cookie cutter what a Dionysis kid should be (he’s a theater kid, he throws good parties, he’s generally popular) and Richie is not
They both started camp at probably 10-ish, a little earlier than traditional because there were two of them which drew more monsters
His eyes are violet though which he thinks is very cool so he dyes his hair purple to match them
He sorta-kinda has chlorokinesis, specifically for grape and strawberry vines, which a. he also thinks is very cool, and b. he uses as an excuse to get out of training so he can hang out with Ruth
He's also really good at swimming and trying to work up the courage to ask his dad if he'd possibly be able to grant him the ability to turn into a dolphin but just like... only when he wanted tot and he could turn back
He really wishes his was an Apollo kid (though, obviously he’d never say that out loud) because of the artistic stuff, so he sort of just tries to gaslight everyone that because his dad is the god of the Arts that includes physical art like drawing so obviously that’s why he’s good at it
He’s a summer-only camper too but for the dumbest reason; their parents gave the twins a choice, but Trevor wanted to be able to go back to school to do school plays and Richie can’t watch anime at camp so they chose summer only
His weapon is just a normal sword but he’s campaigning to get a child of Hephaestus to make him a Katana
(They’re all three kind of outcasts in terms of their own godly parents, because Ruth and Richie don’t really fit the mold of ‘normal child of [blank]’ and Pete’s kind of just generally disliked because of his parentage, so they all sort of came together as friends out of necessity but now they’re just actually buddies and they hang out)
anyway who knows if ill do anything with this but its FUN and id love to talk about it forever they're just little demigod losers I love them

mxtx characters who, in my humble butch opinion, should be butch
Luo Binghe: listen. look me in the eyes. in a genderswap situation, Binghe should get to be butch. one of the key themes in SVSSS is gender, and one of the things that distinguishes SVSSS!Binghe from PIDW!Binghe is that he's not the hypermasculine protagonist and instead is allowed to enjoy more feminine things (like being Shizun's housewife). that's why he's specifically called Bing-mei and it's also why im on my transfemme Binghe soapbox all the time, but that's a whole other topic. what im saying is if we're reversing the gender situation, then fem!Binghe in SVSSS should get to enjoy more masculine things. it's what she deserves. she strikes me as the kind of butch that gets a thrill out of doing gentlemanly things like giving SQQ her coat when she's cold. she should be the Bing-di to PIDW's Bing-jie
Shang Qinghua: this one is deeply self-indulgent projection but don't fucking worry about that okay. SQH is a very specific flavor of low effort butch nerd. SQH is the cookie monster pajamas to butch pipeline. SQH cuts her own hair with regular scissors for convenience and Shen Yuan is dying to get her to just buy some goddamn clippers. SQH is running off of four red bulls and spite. She inexplicably has game and she's just as confused about this as you are
Xie Lian: imagine this for me. you go to one of those volunteering events where you're cleaning trash out of a creek or something. there is a woman there in cargo pants or maybe overalls, something with a shit ton of pockets. she has not shaved in months, maybe years. her hair is in the messiest bun possible, or maybe tied back under a baseball cap. she is somehow the most beautiful woman you've ever seen. after taking away all the trash and informing everyone how to sort the recycling, she is picked up by another woman who appears to be the definition of high camp. you leave this encounter feeling like you might have been converted to something. perhaps to lesbianism. this is what an encounter with butch Xie Lian is like.

gosh and like people saying "it's not men's fault they were raised and conditioned to inevitably be misogynists" like they're totally helpless plankton being carried along the current of patriarchy LIKE they fucking grew up with women around them. their classmates their teachers their caregivers strangers on the street, sitting next to them in the bar, messaging them on games or social media, writing the books and tv shows and movies they enjoy.
And obviously not every woman is handing every man an essay on feminism wherever they go (and theres MANY reasons why tons of women will reinforce the patriarchy even if it oppresses them but that's a different convo). But inevitably it crosses EVERYONE'S minds that maybe women are equal human beings to men. Like the level of disconnect by so many men to never see women as equals, to disengage and deflect whenever sexism is brought up (like holy shit do they disengage and deflect). that's a series of ACTIVE and continuous decisions to dehumanise women in spite of the reality that they can clearly see around them, that's them being presented with the opportunity to have institutional power and superiority over women and actively taking it. It goes way beyond just abosrbing misogynistic beliefs around them, and it's SO common. You know how so many guys think of women as a disposable commodity in the dating game? or are totally sympathetic to rapist celebrities? and spout shit about "false accusations" "#metoo was a mistake" "what about the male custody rate"? it goes waaayy beyond "internalised misogyny" it's fully externalised and they're often proud about it
IMO it's far more essentialist to dismiss the autonomy that men have in fully wholeheartedly embracing patriarchy, that's steeping into bullshit talking points like "men can't change their nature" "you can't take the male socialisation out of the man" and ignores the feminist men (definitely not a majority lol) who don't completely buy into patriarchy from the outset, y'know like guys I've actually interacted with and are legitimately trustworthy nice people. and it ignores my tranny ass as well, like they wanted me to go "eww girls im better than girls" as well, but i fuckin talked to girls and deduced that the whole power game was bullshit. I just wanted to play with the people I liked whoever they were. far before i knew what a transgender was or that i might be one. cuz its fuckin logical if you have any theory of mind

James whistles from his spot up front, peering out the window onto the street as Viv approaches, shrugging on her jacket and looking at him curiously.
“News says it’s below freezing tonight. You walkin’ home, Vivvy?” he asks, looking at her curiously. She knows it's both a question and a well-meaning proposition — which is enough to make her smile a little bit, but shake her head.
“My ride’s waiting for me. I appreciate it though,” she hums. “Oh! And I won’t be coming in tomorrow. Sorority stuff,” the host nods, looking half-mournful as he leans on the wood podium. Viv chuckles a little, rolling her eyes in slight amusement as he straightens out, looking past her once more towards the downtown street, lit up by window signs and orangey street lamps.
“Right, see you…”
“Monday.”
“Monday, right.” Vivian zips up her jacket, heading out the door and looking down at her phone. Bucky’s text is simple: ‘on the corner’ following up their previous conversation: which was Viv going ‘I don’t mind walking’ and Bucky reacting with a thumbs down emoji. She recognizes his car further down the street and speed-walks towards it, already eager to get away from the chill of late autumn. She chuckles when she approaches, peering into the window. Bucky is leaning back in his seat, eyes shut, arms crossed over his chest.
She raps her knuckles on the glass and he shoots up, looking around before his gaze settles on her, effectively startled, and Viv laughs.
In spite of his initial fright, he smiles when he sees her and she hears the faint click of the doors unlocking. She opens the door pretty quickly after that, tossing her bag into the backseat.
“Knight in shining armor,” she teases, as opposed to a proper greeting, before following it up with: “Sorry if I smell like a deep fryer.” He waves it off dismissively.
“No problem. I love french fries.” Viv swats him in the center of his chest for that, which makes him laugh with an additional mutter of seat belt as she settles into her spot. The engine of his car revs to life, phone connecting to the speakers and Bucky’s all-over-the-place playlist hopping to the next track. He pulls off the curb as Viv pulls her hair out of its low barely-there pony and sighs in relief, scratching at her head.
“You were right by the way.” He glances at her momentarily and she’s looking at him dead-on. “Saw that woman in my calculus class with your economics professor — I avoided their table like the plague.” Bucky makes a noise, something between a squawk and a gasp that has Viv throwing her head back in a fit of laughter. “The fuck was that?!”
“Sorry— sorry I just— that was supposed to be a joke,” Bucky laughs a little, breathless and shoulders shaking. “Holy shit, what’d they order?” She can’t help but grin, knowing he’s going to hate the answer.
“Big plate of spaghetti. Think they were trying to do Lady and the Tramp.”
“Gross.” Viv can’t help her second bout of laughter at the scrunch to Bucky’s nose, displeasure evident on his face. Fair enough; his economics professor is about a half a century older than both of them — but her classmates also had a solid ten years on either of them, so more power to her.
“You think they got together before or after realizing she’s a student at his place of work?” She asks, just to watch him scrunch his nose again.
“Whichever makes it more likely that his desk’s clean because I’ve definitely touched it with my bare hands.”
Viv snorts again, rolling her eyes with a parroted gross that has him grinning from ear to ear, wide and bright as it usually is. She lets her gaze shift outside the window to the darkened downtown streets — some windows slightly frosted, twinkling lights starting to go up. They hadn’t even passed Thanksgiving yet.
“Thanks again, for the ride. You didn’t have—”
“Vivian, if that sentence is anything but ‘you didn’t have money on tonight’s game, did you?’ I’m going to ignore it,” Bucky cuts her off without missing a beat, and for a moment Viv just balks at him. He seems satisfied with himself, though, and she huffs.
“Well did you?”
“Fuck no. Rosie’s already killing me in the goddamn fantasy league. Can you believe that? I’m losing to a damn pledge, Viv.” He’s dramatic about it, bemoaning his fantasy football losses in a way that almost makes her forget that he really didn’t have to come pick her up from work. She was more than willing to tough out the hour-long walk back to the sorority house while her car got fixed, but evidently he had other plans. Ones that involve waiting on the curb for her to clock out after closing and enthrall her with the woes he has about his fantasy league. He swears under his breath as he catches the red light. The one at this intersection always feels like it lasts forever. The vermilion glow casts shadows on his face that Viv can’t really help but stare at. She likes how it makes his curls look impossibly blacker, like ink.
“Are you h—,” her question is cut off by her phone ringing and she looks down.
Viv can’t help the souring of her expression at the unsaved number, but lately he’s been calling so much that she knows who it is automatically. She’s more than grateful that her friends haven’t cast stones over her inability to block his number. She’d be going back for Thanksgiving break and a lot could happen in a week. While she’s willing to fight her father on a lot of things; it isn’t smart to forfeit him from paying her phone bill while she’s in school.
This is the fourth time he’s called her tonight. She couldn’t answer the other three because she was working. And there’s a permanence in blocking him out entirely that has Viv a little terrified. Nail in the coffin, something like that — she’s put the hammer down for now and she isn’t sure if she’s quite ready to pick it back up again.
“Viv?” Bucky looks over at her fully, brows furrowing in concern, pulling her out of her thoughts. Her thumb hovers over the pick-up button.
“S’just my dad,” she manages. “This should be qui—”
She hardly registers Bucky reaching for her phone, plucking it from her as she opens her mouth in protest. He holds up his finger though as he picks up and presses it to his ear. Viv swallows hard, hands curling into fists. She can’t really hear what her dad is saying, but she can hear the muffled sound of his voice as he yells into the phone.
When I call you, answer. I’ll cut you off. I’ll make you transfer. If you wanna act like a grown little girl so bad—
Bucky’s face contorts into something like disgust. She can tell in that moment he just might spout off at the mouth. Viv reaches over to grasp at his wrist, shooting him a pleading look.
She hasn’t been scared of her father since she was fourteen. She still isn’t, but she doesn’t want Bucky to step in it with him. It’d be like arguing with a brick wall.
Bucky nods once, still saying nothing. Letting her father spout off at the mouth and taking it all without a word. Eventually the muffled shouting stops.
“Yeah, sure thing Mr. Savorre. I just didn’t want to talk on the phone and drive, y’know? Not exactly safe driving habits. They teach that one in high school. You have a good night now,” Bucky drawls, Viv’s eyes feel like they might pop out of her head as he hangs up and the light turns green. He passes her phone back to her and she can hardly believe what’s just happened.
She can’t help the noise — somewhere between a laugh and a scoff of disbelief.
“You…”
He smiles, softer than before, goes to pat her knee twice then squeeze it.
“So what’re your plans for Thanksgiving break?”

hi. this is my dnd character for toonkind dnd that i first made 7 years ago that ive recycled twice now because i wanted to finally play an ongoing campaign with him. for his third life, not only did i give him a design update, hes also has undergone a MAJOR overhaul in terms of personality and backstory tho i kept some bare basics the same (human ranger with urchin background who LOVES swords and knifes A LOT. and that he has an ambiguous age) the overhaul includes the isekai. and that hes a cunt now. but hes funnier now too lol.
im adding some more details and trivia about him under the readmore
so like if it isnt obvious the double isekai is meant to mirror the fact that i fucking played with him in 3 separate campaigns now. its part of him metatextually now lol. he was such a different guy tho. an EXTREMELY LOYAL guy. now hes significantly more selfish. and rude as hell. but hes not that to be mean or malicious. hes actually a pretty nice guy hes just extremely inconsiderate bc he prioritizes his own wellbeing most of the time. its how he had to grow up
copy pasting this tweet i wrote about him "blade at 15 was a guy that shouldve been playing halo while drinking monster but instead hes a guy stealing apples and eating mushrooms off tree bark. miraculously few instances of poisoning all things considered"
he wouldve been a fucking gamer otaku fr. he got isekaied in the mid 2000s and as a kid he fucking LOVED watching dragonball on saturday mornings. if he got to be a teen on earth, he would eventually found the anime and gaming subcommunities online BUT ALAS. he grew up trying to catch fish with his bare hands. or at least he did until he gave up quick and ate weeds.
also. despite the hardships. hes like. fine? somethings wrong with him. but its not trauma. he didnt mourn his parents much although its not like he couldve done anything with their freshly isekaied corpses when immediately hes being chased by fucking beasts. its okay they were like b-tier parents. (hes definitely not a normal person.)
he wandered the woods trying his best to survive alone and in spite of everything trying to kill him (including the shit he ate...) he ended up in a nearby(?) town and things got a bit easier after that. because he could fucking steal to eat real food now. he stayed in the woods on the outskirts of town bc no one showed grace to a thief and just dropped in every so often to swipe shit. steadily he learned forage (through sheer trial and error)
he was highkey a menace. but eventually in his late teens, a traveling party gave him an idea to like fucking. get a job. as something. he managed to make it work as a ranger/guide for hire
he fucking loves booze. he absolutely underage drank. when he could steal it. and later pay for it. and also even though he could pay for things as an adult, he still steals shit if he thinks he can get away w it (he has an absurdly (or at least pretty) high sleight of hand stat)
before he got isekai'd a second time, went through a CATASTROPHIC DIVORCE with an elf woman who he met in an expedition party who became enamored with him after he saved her life. the uh. fallout happened bc blade didnt realize (and still hasnt realized) that hes kinda aro (fundamentally did not understand her romantic intentions and thought she was just a friend wanted to hang out w him a lot. those were dates.) and his ex didnt realize how onesided it was bc she was so love with him. geez.
also. he was from arizona. hes half white half mexican. but with all the time spent not speaking spanish in a different fucking world, it made any spanish speaking skills he had atrophy to hell. it happens and it was bound to happen bc he was so young and had like no reason or opportunity to practice.
also he chose his name. he hated his lame ass name so much he was like "wait. i dont have to use it anymore." but he was 13 fucking years old. anyways he thought blade sounded cool for a name. knifedad happened later when he got his first knife. he still had a bad naming sense. he was 14.
also although his ethics are kinda wack, whats important to note is that he ultimately doesnt want anyone to like. die. its like his policy. save people that he can while trying his best to not die himself
he also has a soft spot for kids. whether hed bc a good dad is debatable but like. i think hed be a nice one
most important note: his longsword is named Darla, his dagger is named Samantha, the knife in his pack is named Nicky, and his newly acquired strange glowy sword is named lucia, and he wants a cool greatsword very very very fucking bad
i drew him in his under clothing also so that i could have a better sense for his body type when i designed his new outfit im adding it here too. he has a shitton of scars bc hes the type that pisses ppl off that they wanna shank him and also he routinely eats shit a lot. a lot of the scars in this sketch are pretty random except for one specific injury for a certain backstory event i have in mind

Hils Watches Lovely Runner - Ep 14
Oh so the new time machine sent her back to exactly the same point that the first one did. I wonder if this means there are set points in time that she has to travel to.
And now we've got shenanigans with identical red envelopes that they both dropped. Excellent.
It's just occurred to me that in the previous episode when Im Sol was drunk and crying I just assumed it was because Sunjae was dead, but she had already fixed things at that point so she was crying because he doesn't know her now. THEY FOOLED ME!
Aww it's like the early episodes before I found out Sunjae had been secretly in love with Im Sol the whole time
Is Sunjae an actor now instead of an idol? If so I think I see where this is going...
Oh nooooooo has she just sent Im Sol's script to Sunjae by mistake? So I saw where it was going but also not really because I did not expect this!

it is supremely satisfying and also amusing to me that zwillingstürme im herbst not only sheds light to arturia and viviana as characters (as it should, given theyre the banner characters) BUT ALSO gives some hefty development to federico and ebenholz. some highlights below (SPOILERS).
federico's time with loris, and later yulia, are among my favourites featuring him. narrative dictates that loris poses a remark about law, a similar tone to clément's on chaos and strife. these remarks pose as questions to federico, furthering his journey of reflection on law since his sainthood. loved the scene with him on the piano, and how yulia reminded him of clément's flower.
for eben, it was definitely his time in the kargereich. with the barrage of accusations thrown at him by urticans, biegler, even the witch king, he is asked, who is your enemy? feels not unlike friston's debate in lone trail. in fact the different things happening to every person in the void feels like a debate. eben laughs upon realising his answer, and we see his growth in full in the last part, where hibiscus confronts him. he's thought things through and is staying in urtica.
viviana's time in the void feels like a culmination of all her emotions. how she wishes things were different, if any single decision was even slightly altered. after all, the event manages to create such a strong image of her life being put on a set road, and she often paces around the setting like she doesnt have a choice. thus, there is a sort of satisfaction to seeing her explore the different possibilities her life couldve had. of course, the last door she went into was her own memory, and with the threat of the void in front of her, darkness became her wake up call. also, im glad that she ended up declining ewigegnade's call to be a Voice.
arturia, arturia... a woman so misunderstood by everyone, even federico, and also the fans! it took the witch king in his pocket pavilion to tell it to her directly: WHO are you, arturia? because it wasnt until she met the witch king that she was written in the forefront. in fact, throughout a good chuck of the event, arturia seems almost floating about the scenes, simply providing the background music while the play continues. this is in spite of the readers knowing full well she had a hand at all of the cases regarding the witnesses to the witch king's death. loris, seeman, brandt, gerhard, cora... but finally in the kargereich, we bear witness to her true goal: true empathy. a lofty ideal, and probably an unrealistic future. and even then! we still know nothing of what she feels. until the witch king mirrors back at her, and spells it out for the readers: you are empty. you are the furthest from your own utopia. arturia always matches her emotions with her audience, and she can only do it so perfectly by not being anything at all. i could yap more but i think it's sufficient for me to see her get a wake up call, even if it has to come from herkunftshorn lol.
side note, the event manages to almost meticulously write federico and arturia as parallels, quite nicely too. i love how much you can see theyre related, even if they can seem so fundamentally different.

im curious about the relationship between Alicient and Rhaenyra in your fic, it seems like Alicient is trying to save Rhaenyra and her boys, is it out of guilt? And what about Rhaenyra, how does she feels about Alicient now, is the power dynamic (her being a scorned princess and Alicient the most powerful woman in Westeros) stopping her from letting her true emotions show? This context of Rhaenyra losing the war and keeping her head is so underdeveloped yet it's so interesting and intriguing, thank you for exploring it
Aaahhh I just finished answering a comment on AO3 along this same vein! Coinky-dink!
Alicent is - plain and simple - massively in love with her princess still. In fact, Rhaenyra is currently in the same position as Amara, aka this pretty songbird trapped in a cage, being fed lovingly by the hands of her captor who she has complex feelings for (and vice versa). It's almost insane how much Aegon's life parallels Alicent's in this, because he claims to not understand why his mother would be so kind to the sister she helped usurp, but then he's kind to Amara despite making it very obvious her options outside of him are limited.
Rhaenyra definitely is conflicted about Alicent. She notices things like her soft red hair but labels it a taunt. She still remembers burning with jealousy when she found out her father visited Alicent every night after their wedding, and the hell it was to be aware of it. I think when Alicent visits, she's relieved to have another adult on her level to speak to, and she probably wants to give into the Stockholm Syndrome when the Dowager Queen is obviously tender with her (as much as she can be). But it might not be in her best interest to get close to Alicent again. Otto Hightower is still alive after all, and the king would happily go against his mother if it means spiting his sister some more; if anything, when Aegon realises Rhaenyra is opening up to Alicent again (thanks to the spies at Dragonstone) he'd probably shut his mother out of the small council. Currently, Alicent probably mentions things that happen in the small council to Rhaenyra without being asked, and that pipeline of information can be very useful (even if it's just supposedly mundane stuff a lot of the time, for instance grain shortages, or the threat of a plague).
Rhaenyra's figured out by now that her stony attitude keeps Aegon's attention fixed on her alone, to make her life a misery, but that lessens the attention that might fall on her boys (hunting down the Strongs, or taking away the two youngest). He hates her and she wants to keep reminding him of that so the others can go free.
I think she also is aware Aemond and Aegon aren't the bestest bros in all of Westeros (unlike Sunfyre and Aegon) so Rhaenyra could very well decide to sit back and wait for something to go down between them. If it does, she has two legitimate sons from Daemon who are still technically in the male line to the throne (Egg is currently 5th and Viserys is 6th, so it's really not that far considering how volatile dragon wars are and how suddenly infants can die - Jaehaerys is still at a very vulnerable age).
Despite it all, deep down, Rhaenyra knows Alicent better than anyone else currently alive (because how much does Otto truly know his own daughter when he can't even predict when she'll go against him). She still makes exceptions for her, decides that it isn't Alicent's choice to do this to her, that Alicent is still just the nervous, nail-biting, people-pleasing tender young girl she used to be. She's giving into the Stockholm to feel less lonely and return to the old warmth of her childhood companion that she used to know.
p.s. Alicent definitely chose to do all of this to her, to be a part of why Rhaenyra is currently in a cage, but that's the complex nature of the situation I suppose.

73 yards thoughts
now that ive had a night to sleep on it, and read everyone's thoughts, im rewatching the episode to see if i can come to a more definite opinion about the episode (though that's perhaps against the spirit of the thing, lol!)
so a few moments that stood out for me that i don't think have already been talked about a lot:
when mrs twist shows up on the mountain, and ruby is giving her messages to pass along to the woman, she wants to say sorry. when mrs twist asks 'what for?' ruby looks genuinely thrown + upset, and eventually says '...i don't know.' since the woman/curse that haunts ruby is functionally an externalisation of ruby's deep seated sense that there is something fundamentally wrong with her, i think this interaction was super poignant. ruby 'knows' that she's done something that she needs to apologise for in the same way that she 'knows' there is something wrong with her that will make people react with fear + anger. there's no proof, no clear flaw or mistake that she can point to, because that's the point. the woman isn't saying anything specific -- there's nothing to say. noticing her (noticing a part of ruby that has a perception filter on it -- that is hard to see until you get close) just means that you see in ruby what ruby sees in herself. she is afraid that people will 'discover' whatever is wrong with her, and she'll lose them forever.
relevant to this is the fact that ruby didn't actually break the circle. if reading the messages is what summoned the woman in universe, then sure, she has culpability for that. but if it was breaking the circle, she had to live with the consequences of someone else's actions, and feeling guilt for something she didn't do. while im less confident with this reading, you could argue this is an allegory for her being given away. ultimately, that decision had nothing to do with her. she was literally a baby lmao. the idea that there's something wrong with her bc of her mother's decision is illogical -- doesn't follow reality, just like magic. she's spending her life trying to make up for a mistake she hasn't made (and, honestly, probably wasn't made. we don't know anything about her birth mother -- its more than likely that she wasn't fit to be a parent to ruby, no matter how human or supernatural the reasons for that were. but the facts of the situation don't matter here, in this liminal space. guilt and fear and shame bleed through the gaps. ruby could arguably be 'the spiteful one' the pub laugh about. she thinks she needs to be punished for something, and so the woman punishes her.)
following along this line, we know that ruby genuinely doesn't know what might have caused the woman to appear. she suggests trespassing, or breaking the circle, and gets the idea that reading the notes might have been wrong from the pub, but she never finds out for sure. unit doesn't know, or at least doesn't have the chance to tell her. the lack of closure ties in really well -- ruby has to carry a trauma that, even as she comes to terms with it, she can never truly explain or understand. even the partial amnesia at the end of the episode can be read as a sort of 'the body remembers what the mind forgets'. some part of her knows something terrible has happened, something that scarred her and left her alone for an immense amount of time (even if that time, in a literal sense, was undone), but she won't be able to put words to it. it seems that self acceptance - literally opening her arms to this *thing* that has haunted her her whole life,
now for some more rambly thoughts/things im still confused about
i genuinely think if not for the single shot of the episode reversing and old ruby now standing with her arms out on the cliff, i would have no problems with the themes of this episode. it was a powerful representation of rejection and fear that genuinely freaked me out (ruby running after her stone-faced mother while crying BROKE me), and i think it was a great character study of ruby. like others have said -- how many people would have stuck it out for that long? how many people would have never resented/blamed the doctor (or anyone, really) for leaving? and how many of THEM would've come to find a sense of companionship with their spectre?. ...however.
i can not wrap my head around the shot where time reverses and old ruby is looking out from the pov of the woman. it completely breaks my brain. i know at a certain point i should just accept that the woman can do whatever the story needs her to do, but there was nothing about time travel up to that point. it was all about physical and psychological boundaries. more than that, there was no indication that ruby was trying to make up for what had gone wrong. she didn't try and fix the circle, she didn't try and communicate with the woman at all beyond her first failed apology. on its own, i like this -- ruby becomes resentful of the woman quite quickly, which tracks as an expression of her poor self esteem. why would she try and get in the good graces of someone she rejects + dislikes? and again, i LIKE that she eventually treats her as a companion. all ruby has is herself, and she can never leave herself. getting to a point where she doesn't want the woman to go away, where she doesn't feel lonely while alone -- it makes sense that that is what heals the riff. i can write all that out in a way that makes sense to me. ruby makes a mistake (or witnesses a mistake) that makes the doctor disappear. she rejects herself, and in this liminal space, the part that she rejects manifests into reality. it haunts her for the rest of her life, even as she begins to wield what she thinks it says about her (that she's unloveable) to her advantage. when she accepts it, and integrates it back into herself, she is able to speak clearly to herself -- what she is thinking makes it across to young!ruby. when ruby thinks about the situation without the influence of self hate, she realises that the problem was the doctor's actions, not her own. she gets the message across, the doctor doesn't disappear, and the cycle never starts. the loop closes.
but. she wasn't one with the woman the whole time! if she was, the doctor would have never stepped on the circle -- the loop couldn't start, and so it wouldn't need to be closed. like, i know that we do a lot of paradoxes in this show and sometimes things are just gonna be Weird. but to me it's like if, in turn left, donna died in an unrelated car crash, then ended up back in time anyway. so why, if ruby has apparently accepted the woman by the time she visits the tardis for the last time, does the show bother with taking us back to the hospital and seeing old!ruby flatline? why doesn't the old woman come to her there, in that moment, so old!ruby is reaching across time but not space? if i squint, i could make an argument for the death. ruby's understanding of herself dies so a new, more accepting one can be born -- and obviously the timeline would fade away in the moment the loop is closed. but that's not what happens. old!ruby chooses hope and accepts herself, THEN goes back to the hospital, dies, then travels back to the past through time AND space (somehow, sure, i'll just accept the woman can do that), then communicates the message, then fades away. what changed between the visit to the tardis and her death? what do those few minutes possibly add other than the 'ive never been alone' line, which could've easily been written into the talk on the cliff? hell, she could've passed away right there on the cliff, if that needed to happen! but no matter how i twist it i can't understand why the old woman looked the same as it did before old!ruby merged with her, behaved + moved the same, and physically manifested when none of the criteria for its appearance had yet been met. im almost certainly overthinking it -- i can map everything else from this episode onto a psychological exploration of ruby and her fear. maybe the episode is saying that the woman was always there (at least to ruby), and old!ruby's self acceptance is what let the message get through??? but fuck i hate that she looks the same!!!! aghghhhghg! what changed! what changed! it looks like nothing changeddddd!!!!! <- deranged. they merged, there should be a sign of that beyond her hands being mirrored with ruby's.
tldr. if i could change anything about the ending of the episode, i'd take it in one of two ways. either have ruby merge with the woman while on the cliff and have ruby say something like 'now, what were you (or i) trying to tell me?' before cutting to the new timeline, or have the woman post merge look like old (or young!) ruby. she couldn't be seen because she was unknowable and (bc of ruby's schema) unloveable, so ruby conjured a generic older woman (possibly drawing from mother issues -- had to be someone at minimum old enough to be her bio mum). if she now looked like something specific, wouldn't that show old!ruby knew that what she feared was all bc she rejected herself? young!ruby could even have a line to go along with 'she looked like she was looking for someone', maybe 'i wanted to talk to her' -- just something small indicating that old!ruby's acceptance of herself was passed down in some small way, even if it certainly hasn't cured ruby of anything.
now for other theme/focus mutterings. i could spin something here about the fact that the doctor says the fairy circle 'is' charms and spells and hopes and dreams. ruby hopes and dreams that she can be accepted, and later, that she can bring the doctor back/undo the moment where it all went wrong. but the doctor also says that they should 'rest in piece'. so they're dead hopes and dreams, aka fears + regrets? so breaking it unleashed both the doctor and her greatest fears - the doctor of complete helplessness + impotence, and ruby of abandonment + rejection. because those fears stay buried in this timeline, ruby + the doctor's hopes (which in many ways are embodied in each other) can continue to live and be 'here', not drowned in the past.
also, the doctor implies the woman is 'resting in piece', out of nowhere, which i think is another indication of both ruby AND the doctor having knowledge from the split timeline. after all, old!ruby did die. so did the timeline where all that happened, i suppose. maybe that's the other angle for the fairy circle - it represents the fragility of a load bearing timeline. the hundreds of dead paradoxes and dead universes that spin off from time being written and unwritten as the doctor (and his companions) fixes whatever he can. let them rest in piece. forget what could've happened. forget what just did happen.
now for my other critique. i think the sexual harassment sub plot was cheap and shitty, and only served to be an incredibly lazy 'kick the puppy' moment to show that the prime minister was Evil™ levels of bad. in the process it showed no respect or care to victims of abuse, and pretty heavily implied that ruby had done nothing in the face of her peer being abused, because 'she had to make sure'. of what? that mad jack was a bad guy? watching him heavily imply he wanted to fire nukes wasn't enough to confirm anything? 'he's a monster' wasn't enough? why? what metric was she using, then? if she was waiting for him to be prime minister, why did she wait an unspecified amount of time AFTER he was elected, where he's clearly still abusing marti, to act? presumably the audience was already on team 'oh this guy sucks' by the nuke interview at the VERY latest, where it was also made clear that the guy was fearmongering about borders and all sorts of right wing bullshit. like, those are just the problems with it off the top of my head -- it fucking sucks, basically.
that all being said, i think ruby convincing herself that she only has 'one chance' works super well into the overall theme of ruby's understanding of the monster + her situation being tied to arbitrary rules she's decided help make the woman make sense. since this terrible thing happened when life was previously going fine, there must be a way to undo it and go back to the love and acceptance she had before. but there is no monster to slay that will trigger the end credits. there's just ordinary, shitty humans, and ruby herself. she can't uncross the boundary of pre-and-post trauma. and as long as she thinks there is something she has to make up for, the world where she is being punished will keep ticking along. i just wish it had been communicated in a different context!!!
side note. does anyone else want to come live with me in a world where 'it never snowed again' means that snow never occured again anywhere in the world. yes its way more likely to think that ruby's referring to instances of spontaneous snow linked to her emotions. but can you IMAGINE hardening your heart so entirely after being rejected by your mother that you change the climate of planet earth?? holy shit!

this is gonna sound like it’s in bad faith but I swear it’s not, but, do you consider yourself a woman? like as opposed to something else
good question!
briefly, my wife n i have similar gender setups in spite of our intra-gender variability -- "mmm, not exactly a woman, but definitely not a man".
more elaborately, i like to describe mine using concrete language, like the class cards ive been dealt or the social roles i fill. "my womanhood" is informed by my environment and the frames of reference others have for me in the moment, like "feminine woman" turning into something else when i hold my butchs hand. im a woman solely because of the life my class position has given me! its a fact without description or reason.
tediously, i dont think "woman" is ever satisfactory. are we talking about the social apparatuses that dichotomize men and women in a dance of heterosexuality? are we talking about the legibility of womanhood in general, like my womanhood is apparent because of empty social signifiers? are we talking about class descriptions, social roles, presumed experience and innate "trauma" that likely doesnt describe my weird journey through gender but nonetheless is used to describe people like me?
(if someone goes on a rant about womanhood somewhere down the line i stop being a woman to them, so frankly i dont care and ill let the dudes sexually harassing me and straight-and-narrow moms scorning me decide while i go about my business. my coincidentally female-looking dyke business.)
vaguely, im "with women". im a woman because other women exist, and im only a woman when others are too. i dont think theres anything in or around me that makes me a woman, its like purely arbitrary historical circumstances, which makes it hard to keep "my womanhood" from hollowing itself out ykwim? "co-womanhood", god i miss that phrase.
candidly... i use woman when i want to trouble ppls expectations of what a binary gender looks like, and i use nonbinary when i want to trouble ppls expectations of what a nonbinary gender looks like. a contrarian, didactic gender! im only one or the other when someone is saying something untrue about an experience ive had and they tack a funny name onto it.
tl;dr, i like to play around: my nonbinariness is informed by my womanhood, and vice versa.

There's something I'm conflicted about about Tang Bo, because I learned about him through fanarts, but the ones I saw at the time were ones where he looked so feminine that I actually thought he was a woman, and I was happy about it because I like badass ladies (the two we have are nice, but it hits differently when the character is more like an equal).
And though I love Tang Bo as he is, I'm kind of disappointed that we didn't get more female characters, which led me to start writing my own fic out of spite with a female Tang Bo and try to explore the implications of him being a woman while being... Well, a dark saint.
But since changing Tang Bo's sex is a controversial take, and my intention is to explore the character of being a woman in the Tang family and the restrictions that came with it, so I tried to write them out of a hetero normative dynamic.
Now I have this mix of an asexual but demiromantic-in-denial Chung Myung and an androgynous/lady Oscar-like Tang Bo (usually passing as a man) who sees marriage as something entirely political but loves Chung Myung so deeply while they're trying to figure out what weird thing they have between them during the end of the war against the demonic cult. Mostly doing some character study and world-building.
But I'm dealing with a massive writer's block, and I felt like asking if it's a concept worth exploring or maybe moving to a different type of story and scrapping the female Tang Bo concept.
Ugh, perhaps I should try to write the one shot with the aphrodisiac plot. Or if you have some plot ideas, I would write them. I just want to write, but I'm losing motivation because I'm unable to make any real progress.
Anyway, I'm sorry to bother you with this, but you're like the TangChung main account, so I thought I could have some insight about this ship that's been consuming my mind and care.
hmm its an interesting concept i suppose and i understand the want for more interesting and equal in terms of power/strength female characters but i wont lie when i say im probably not the best person to ask about this concept specifically since im biased and dont like genderbending a gay couple to make them straight, no matter how subversive you are with the tropes u use in their now cis hetero relationship.. if ur really interested in pursuing writing this idea and want my opinion on it, i dont have anything else to say about it unfortunately
as for any other fic topic, the aphrodisiac idea was funny and would make for a humourous fic id definitely read..! i am unfortunately sacked out on any other fic ideas LOL i put my cards all in w tang bo returns/lives aus and i cant really think of anything else that might be rattling around in my head atm hmmm..
tang bo lives/returns aus are pretty versatile so im sure something new and unique could be pulled from there & theres also a huge lack of chung mun & chung jin return aus which could be soooo interesting id love to read a fic where chung myung gets his brother(s) back, im also really into those fics where the disciples go back in time to a hundred years previous and meet geomjon chung myung and they become his disciples in that era.. maybe a gen fic of chung myung bonding w the kids or with tang gunak and the other alliance leaders.. etc etc

i think as a queer person my default for most characters is some type of queer even if i don't have a specific label for them if that makes any sense?? i kinda forget that straight people are a default in media until there's a character that's so unabashedly straight :')
the jesse trans hc is really popular and i understand why, i wanna draw jesse eventually when i have time !! i think a lot of small details about his characters are readable as trans or at least relatable !! sexuality wise i'd say he's either straight or bi but you'd never get him to admit to the second one lmao
also this post by geitonas introduced me to the idea of mike being trans which i ADOORE i scroll through art about him being trans giggling and twirling my hair i absolutely agree
most villains default to gay for me just because they're usually coded that way and it carries over to lalo and i don't have to hc gus as gay so,, i could see lalo as either gay or bi it depends on the day i'm talking about it but a lot of the personal things that are linked to his character have to be inferred since again he doesn't have the level of backstory or even directly told lore as other characters. i don't think he'd be "secretive" about his sexuality but i think growing up around hector and then seeing what happened to gus and max he's definitely not loud and proud either but considering the circumstances who would be. Him being so high up in rank with the personality that he has i can almost see him doing that out of spite if that makes any sense?? idk how to explain this thought properly im dealing with finals right now my brain is pretty much smooth but i know he enjoys what he does as a "job" but idk i think he'd find the idea of a queer man with a high rank funny because who is going to tell him what he can't do?
kim definitely kissed a girl in college and she definitely didn't hate it at all but never allowed herself the time to think over the implications of that, similarly i think skylar has fantasized what it would be like to be married to a woman but in the way thats like "what if i didn't have to do everything all the time" but i can sense something lgbt about her i just haven't thought it through enough yet lol
Idk where to start with howard and jimmysaul but they gives me the vibe of when you're around family but you aren't out and you're a little too supportive of gay people and everyone looks at you suspiciously. they're ALLIES (at first)

Catherine has a different fucked up definition of what a bad influence is. Anne - THE Anne herself? No. Aside from Mary, Anne set up an example for Damian. An example to always respect other people, an example to treat human beings, high position or not, as an equal. She looked after that kid and she knew she did it right. Anne has a scar on her arm solely for Damian's protection. She raised him as her own after Mary's death.

heyy mads so actually i need more of your thoughts on amy/laurie and why you don’t understand people defending them…. i remember being kind of baffled by them when i read the book as a young teen so please <3 be a hater <3

OKAY. so i feel like the whole amy/laurie vs jo/laurie debate has been widely discussed (both on The Internet and in my household lol) but for me it's less that i think he should've ended up w jo and more that i think acting like a/l truly love each other and totally definitely make sense is so stupid. it's soooo stupid laura i am rolling my eyes!! can you see me!!!
and the reason i think this! is because, essentially, Alcott uses the four sisters to like ... represent the few limited life paths that were avail to non-wealthy american women in the 19th century, right?
like meg marries the man who is able (if only just) to provide her a stable home. beth pursues her music (piano? if im remembering right) and is content to live her life at home, with her family. amy wants to (and eventually does) marry a wealthy, cultured man of ~Society who can give her a life above the one she was born into.
jo is the wildcard, ofc. the one who goes off-script for the normal young woman, and ofc who alcott views as a reflection of herself. we know that alcott wanted jo to remain unmarried and was strong-armed by publishers to put her w someone, but if she knew she'd have to, then my only explanation for it to not be laurie was to spite the predictable narrative and spite the readers lol.
the guy jo does end up w is so random and just .. makes no sense. if you're making sense of it, you are having to reach so far up your ass to do so! sorry to be crass!!! (rlly leaning into my hater-moment oops)
anyway - the way this connects to amy and laurie is this:
i do not believe (and i'm sure we are not meant to believe) that meg married for love. beth (</3) did not marry ofc. and it's impossible to believe jo married for love if the author intended her to be unmarried. that storyline doesn't exist to me now.
and amy is the sister that is represented as a bit vain; a bit entitled and spoiled in the way youngest children are allowed to be. from the start, it's clear she plans to marry for wealth. even if we're taking from gerwig's adaptation instead of solely the book, then amy still isn't really represented as particularly romantic (the whole 'i'm not a poet' scene) (also tbf it's been awhile since i read the book, but imo she romanticizes her life, yes, but not love itself).
LAURIE is the romantic, the most so, out of all the characters. i genuinely feel like this is the ONLY reason ppl latch onto amy/laurie and try so hard to rationalize it .. bc they can't bear to think of laurie in a marriage that was w his next-best-option rather than True Love (sorry.. by no means a dig at amy...but cmon guys ..)
because i also feel like the only thing laurie really wanted even more than to spend his life w jo, is to be apart of the march family. it was always clear he wanted that, just as it was always clear he loved jo from day 1! and so the only conclusion i was ever able to come from all this is that he loved jo for being jo and he loved amy for being a march sister.
ah god sorry this is SO anysmally long i am SO SO sorry laura dear!! so grateful to you for this opportunity to hate on them (read: cringe & take the romance out of) them as a couple!!! but there is simply no scenario where i can imagine knowing a boy has loved my sister his entire life and then MARRY him after ?? bc she rejected him ??!!! esp knowing amy and jo's history of shared drama. esp bc the entire story is one of sisterhood!
