How I fell into a job I love...

Some people are lucky enough to have a set idea or direction regarding "what they want to be when they grow up". It has never been that cut and dry for me.

I was always a pretty good student at school. I had good marks and even enjoyed it to some extent (the HSC is actually torture though, 2 years of dry repetitive information drilled into you. All so you can pass one exam at the end of it). Still, the idea of picking a career path straight after high school was strange to me. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Nothing grabbed me or stuck out enough for me to consider making a career out of it.

It's funny the way life throws things at you though. Up until the beginning of this year, I was working at a clothing boutique. I definitely enjoyed my position there, but it wasn't something that inspired my passion.

There's something about gliding along under the ocean, with the bubbles tingling past your ears that is so specially unique. I learnt to dive when I was still in high school, I can thank my dad for that. His passion sparked my own interest in diving. He had been talking about opening his own dive shop for a while and then one day he just upped and did it. It wasn't long and I began helping out at the shop when I could. Helping out has turned into a full time job and it's been rewarding. I'm never not busy and its great. I am a creative person and there have been so many ways for me to use that here. Building our website, making the shop pretty, blog posts, advertising, creating newsletters, photography....all are creative outlets the shop has given me. It's so good to have a direction for my creativity!

The business/work side of my job is enjoyable and that means a lot. I can't justify working or doing anything in life that eats away at your happiness, happiness is the most important thing in life. I am also lucky that my job doesn't just involve desk work, I get to go out and dive! That's what our whole business is about, a means to get under the ocean.

In my spare time I am in training to become a Divemaster for Scubology. Working in a dive shop and training for to be a Divemaster go hand in hand, so I am lucky. There are also perks to working here, travel opportunities being a big one for me. The travel bug is a common one, delving into foreign cultures and experiencing new sights , making new memories. It's all about having new experiences and making amazing memories to look back on or share in your travel stories. I have a dream to dive the world.

Some days I make mistakes and feel like it's too hard. But I think that's what keeps me engaged in my job, the challenge and the responsibility. Also my job is 100% about diving, the ocean and all its beauty, so it's hard to complain. Scubology is not even a year old, still a baby. But we are growing and that's exciting!
