Does celery help the liver produce bile to breakdown food?

Hey guys! I thought I would start doing this thing where once a week I bust a health myth which people may believe to be true. First up we have ‘celery helps the liver produce bile to breakdown food’. Gurrrl, where do I begin with this one?!

Bile is produced by the liver. It contains bile acids / cholesterol and yellow pigments from breakdowns of haem (part of haemoglobin) that is in our red blood cells that allow the transport of oxygen (bilirubin). The human liver produces around 500ml of bile a DAY. It is a natural process of the hepatocytes (special liver cells). Bile is then stored in the gallbladder and released into the duodenum when hormones such as cholecystokinin recognise the presence of fats in the stomach. The gallbladder releases it into the intestine where the bile helps emulsify the fat. Bile is also where the breakdown of products of things like red blood cells and drugs get excreted out of the body through our poop. Bile is also very important in absorbing fats including fat soluble vitamins example: K, D, E and vitamin A. Bile production is no joke and is seriously regulated by some complex processes inside the liver cells and other cells that line the ducts that collect bile. *Get to the point pls* ok ok ok... bile flow is strongly regulated by the breakdown products of red blood cells not CELERY, LMAO. So the answer is basically no. Celery does not help your liver make bile it’s not a fat and it certainly is not a red blood cell. If we are really really persistent and pushing it MAYBE celery could have one contribution which at MOST is providing water. Fun fact: bile helps give our poop a brown colour. Cya next week 🤘🏻
