Glamourye (Illusion Magick)
Tumblr media
(pic & (most of) post by The Silver Elves)
The Path of the Illusionist is the way of Glamor and Glamoury. Illusionists deal primarily with the appearance of things. We are Masters of the Magick of Sensory Manipulation, and experts at creating just the right atmosphere for any occasion. In the play of life, it is we who create the props, the sets, the costumes, and the music. We are Masters of Mood. The purveyors of the vital elements of setting.
There are surely some who would be of the opinion that the work the Illusionist does is unimportant or even evil. But the Elfin are aware of how much these things add to the success of any venture. It is rather like a play... it is true that a good play with good actors requires neither costumes nor props nor scenery nor any outer accessory, and yet how much is added to the play, how much is its effect heightened, when we have those very things done well?
The Illusionist also has the knowledge and power of camouflage and protective coloring. Often we find these magick workers among those who must frequently go among mankind and other races (raises hand) for they are adept at fitting in and appearing to be just like everyone else. This, at times, can be an important function for nearly all Faerie Folk; however, Illusionists are experts in our field.
It is Illusionists, in fact, that protect Faerie from intrusion or even being found by those who are not ready for the splendor and wonder of that radiant plane of being. Paradoxically, it is also Illusionists who help reveal to those who are ready the illusionary nature of seeming Reality. For we know better than anyone how illusionary that world is. Thus curiously the Illusionist not only performs great feats of illusion, but by doing so makes layfolk aware that they are illusions and that things are never what they seem.
To most folk, Faerie its'elf is illusion because it seems to be a realm born of and composed of fantasy and this has truth to it. But it is a fantasy that has life in the realm of Spirit and Soul and these worlds, while invisible to ordinary sight, are the true energetic reality, and the realm of materiality which seems so solid and real is, in truth, the real world of illusion.
Now for my two sense! As an Illusionist, my power is rooted in Mind Control. Because let's be honest: to manipulate perception you must manipulate the mind. I often get accused of lying or Goddess forbid "not taking things seriously enough." This is because Illusion Magick has consequences. These consequences are us ending up embodying the essence of Glamour, or worse, getting trapped in the Glamours we create. Glamour, while real magick, is still an illusion and therefore subject to trickery. We are often like the Jesters of Old, and many of us enjoy playing pranks (raises hand). And can you blame us? Illusion was made to entertain others! Just because I'm an Enchanter, doesn't mean I can't be serious. My question is this: if it helps & does what we claim it does, does it make a difference if it is trickery or 'real?' No, no it doesn't.

• Having a specialty in Glamourye, and constantly accused of things I did not do, being called a fake/fraud, etc.

the dynamic of demigods thinking which other demigod is the most powerful is always amusing to me because. like, we know the big 3 kids are all the most powerful. That's just a fact of their universe. And then we know nearly every character views Percy as the strongest demigod, and most people are very rightfully intimidated by him.
and you look at the powers of the Big 3 kids and there's Percy, but then you realize Nico is just kind of objectively more powerful than him but simply chooses to hang out in Percy's shadow like he's Percy's scary dog privileges. Like, the two of them are pretty equally capable of causing multiple different apocalypses. Nico just also has like four different instakill powers and it's not like he doesn't use them. He very much uses them! Not infrequently, even! And they don't seem to take a significant amount of energy from him! And other demigods are pretty intimidated by both of them! But Nico makes a conscious point to keep his cards close to his chest and not let on exactly how dangerous and scary he can be if he wants to. People are already scared enough of him without knowing anything about him and he doesn't like that. Percy doesn't think about that nearly as much, and so usually just goes in guns blazing and that's part of why he's considered a wildcard. And then Nico himself puts Percy on a pedestal, so those who do know more about Nico's abilities then presume Nico knows something they don't about Percy that implies Percy is even stronger than him.
And even on a meta level Nico's narrative role requires him to be functionally more powerful than Percy, because he very often serves the purpose of getting Percy out of situations he can't handle on his own. That's just part of his function as a character! But also narratively he can't overshadow Percy so he just takes a backseat of his own accord and that's very amusing to me.
#pjo#percy jackson#riordanverse#nico di angelo#i will also note it is implied though we never see that Hazel has the exact same powers as Nico#and Hazel has trained with her powers way longer than Nico has plus is older so theoretically is more powerful already#she killed a giant all by herself. sank a small island. and successfully subdued Gaea for like another 60 years#so given that + her also having Nico's powers then *Hazel* is theoretically the strongest demigod no contest#Jason and Thalia end up kind of nerfed by the plot in that neither is allowed to overshadow Percy either#but they dont play the same roles that characters like Nico do - Nico keeps getting stupid abilities just for convenience factor#and Bianca never got the opportunity to use many powers besides astral projection/dream manipulation and similarly hades kid illusion stuff#and general ghost stuff. and she does all that as a ghost really. her killing the skeleton wasnt even her powers that was just a normal sta#and it was just by virtue of her being a hades kid and fulfilling the ''can kill these skeletons'' requirement that it blew up#technically she also showcases underworld immunity with the lethe stuff wearing off but that's very subtle#Hazel also doesnt play the same role as Nico and so doesnt get to showcase all that#plus is similarly nerfed with the ''cant be cooler than Percy'' constraint and so never gets to really do anything#even though logistically she is the most powerful and should showcase the full extent of her abilities to the same degree as Percy and Nico#Jason at least gets a little bit more wiggle room than Thalia being a main protagonist#Nico just gets the most wiggle room out of both not being a protagonist and being functionally a dues ex machina most of the time#versus Thalia or Bianca who are only ever secondary or supporting characters

He loves his conjux more than anything. He likes reminding him everyday with constant compliments and affection.
Tumblr media
Soundwave's is the supportive friend. He sticks close to Illusion and supports her ideas.
Fun fact: She was the one to convince him to join the Decepticon Cause for social change
Tumblr media
Soundwave us more sympathetic to Starscream, especially when he gets abused by Megatron. Soundwave is also a victim of abuse when he dated Blaster until he got out of that abusive relationship and ran away to join the gladiators. He tries his best to help Starscream and let him know that he's not alone.
Tumblr media
Both Soundwave and Megatron were friends back then, but Soundwave soon quickly realized how Megatron fell I b to corruption and only wanted power, losing sight of what the Decepticon cause really stands for. For years, Soundwave silently resented him and blamed him for the fall of Cybertron for his lust for power (and the Autobots). Soundwave quietly works under him, but no longer sees him as a friend.

god i do still think it’s so interesting that most wizards (and even gale itself at times) talk about magic as though it’s an exact science, like, fantasy equivalent of being a STEM major, but during the weave scene gale explicitly compares it more to music and art and poetry, like!!

have yall ever noticed in osamu dazai's entrance exam that ranpo cuts to the heart of dazai within moments of meeting him, weighs him against the feather in his gaze, decides it neither too heavy nor light, and then says, simply, unfeignedly, deliberately, "Oh, that's nice. Anyway, welcome to the Agency."
and dazai, despite smoothing himself shapeless under ranpo's scrutiny, is rattled, slipping aside his noh mask to self-soothe by asking kunikida about ranpo's skill. because the radio static crackling along his spine can't be the sensation that he's been caught, or ranpo would have renounced or redressed or recoiled from the snake in his home— so it must be no longer human, buzzing and frustrating such and such skill ranpo set on him, and this placidity is a facade to save face. ranpo couldn't have seen what dazai didn't deign to show him, however much the thought briefly excites dazai.
except then kunikida explains that ranpo's skill is to deduce the truth of a case just by looking at it, and dazai is momentarily stunned, the static roaring in his drums as muscle memory swallows piqued yearning and spits bitter incredulity. even if there were a skill that could crack him apart to out the pluck meat that might reassure him he's made of flesh beneath the chitin, there is no exception to his nullification.
even as the blackened grief encroaches like ennui around dazai's edges, ranpo is calling them, promising them the answer they asked for, and no more than that much. he asks dazai for his glasses (the glasses precious to him, typically on his person, but in that moment, somewhere else), and dazai is coaxed by his curiosity and ranpo's beckon.
and because dazai is still a pitiable creature prone to wanting, he leans towards the taunting lure and takes it between his fingers while holding his breath to brace against the certain-to-be-crushing disappointment.
and instead, substantiation brokering little argument. ranpo can deduce the truth by looking at it. and as dazai's own discernment reverse engineers ranpo's conclusion, he finds no fault in it.
dazai's rhapsody enlivens him in the car with Kunikida, the well of him overflowing with the salvific implications that moments prior he was pinned, writhing in place, by someone sincerely seeing him, who was satiated by enough substance to then look away, who wasn't the least surprised to see wriggling, living flesh in the shape of him.
dazai's so beside himself that when kunikida remarks that he's never seen dazai marvel over someone else's skills like that before, dazai scarcely lies to him when he says lots of things take him by surprise, like when he tried to pick up a clam with his chopsticks, and it was still alive, startling him.
kunikida, who also notices more than he's given any credit for, dismisses dazai's third perspective, depersonalized, dehumanized, and disassociated clam metaphor, and says: "You seemed taken aback that someone had the ability to see and know all."
to which dazai responds with the same seamless and subtly mean spirited deflection he tends towards whenever he's suddenly feeling vulnerable.
but yes, he is taken aback. it's worldview shattering, not unlike when chuuya incited him, or oda shrugged at him, or when kunikida would, later, see a lock without any key (a climax without any hope) and create one himself.
ranpo saw him, saw who he'd been, and said, with prejudice: "Anyway, welcome to the Agency."
because I didn't until a couple of weeks ago, but I haven't stopped thinking about it.
#bsd#bungou stray dogs#bsd ranpo#bsd dazai#souheki#they communicate via eye contact like cats and kunikida knows they are but he doesnt know what theyre saying#its subtle but then dazai's questions and the sequence of events#makes it like#a very purposeful gesture followed by a purposeful gesture#and dazai is so joyful and thrilled and in awe#and it's because ranpo is amazing!!!!!#but also it's because ranpo saw him. knew what (who?) he was#ranpo's gaze cuts through artifice to the truth of the matter#and dazai is layers and layers of - he feels - put upon artifice (it's not and it sometimes is)#because he's so terrified of someone seeing who (what—) he is and affirming he's as inhuman as he thinks he might be#but ranpo sees him. stares at him for a while. pierces him so deeply that dazai asks kunikida what his skill is.#and then ranpo says welcome. i know what you were. but here you dont need to be anyone but who you are.#and he doesnt need to know more doesnt act intrigued this isnt a plot to unwravel or connections to make#and then he asks dazai to hand him his glasses#because ranpo sees everything#and so in exchange for seeing more than dazai necessarily was comfortable showing#ranpo asks him to hand him his glasses#allows him close#and offers dazai his own vulnerability in a rare pre-guild arc acknowledgment/moment of candor that He Knows He's Not A Skill User#but not only that#it like affirms yes i saw you no it wasnt an illusion or a skill you can nullify#dazai lies and manipulates and nullifies and deflects#but he cant do ANY of that to ranpo — literally or figuratively#ranpo's piercing eyes see the truth of him and dazai can revel in the giddy euphoria that there isnt anything he can do to undermine#the matter of factness in ranpo's acceptance of him. isnt that just a little wonderful?

as much as i get Why i've seen people say battler's gameboards feel like ooc fanfiction versions of the family - and to an extent they probably are - i kind of am also like. i think we need to remember that most of what we see of the family is as pieces written by an author who is also a character in umineko with their own experiences and motivations, and their characters are largely established in the two episodes written by someone who was willing to literally blow all of them up
acting like there's no way kinzo would ever cutely fawn over his grandkids is so. like okay i Get that it is a bit of whiplash when you've just finished episode 7 and learned everything you've learned there, but like, if you can accept eva and hideyoshi flirting or krauss and natsuhi cuddling together or rudolf kissing the receiver when talking to kyrie on the phone or rosa making them late just to buy maria a treat, then you grasp that shitty people are capable of genuine love, often even towards the exact same people they mistreat
we barely even see kinzo alive in umineko and much of his character throughout the gameboards is pretty explicitly other people's impressions, projections, and fantasies of what he might be like, almost exclusively by characters who were direct victims of his abuse or knew about kuwadorian beatrice
and it's not that they're wrong at all to remember kinzo that way, it's just that like. what part of that is mutually exclusive with kinzo being emotional and over-excited to see his grandkids? the idea that he despises his family so much he has no interest in seeing them is explicitly a fabrication, and not even one the siblings are really able to buy - they just play nice while they figure out how to prove their suspicions about it
i think i'm just like. umineko spends a large amount of its runtime trying very hard to explain to you that both things can be - and often are - equally true about a person. and that love is not at all mutually exclusive with cruelty or abuse
battler's gameboards may at times stretch the limits of the rule that pieces must act in-character, but like, the point is that the capacity for this, too, existed in everyone, under the right circumstances.
and i think mechanically it's trying to make you understand the gameboards' capacity to pick one facet of a character and push it to the extreme - perhaps to make you interrogate whether something similarly biased may have been happening this whole time, gone unnoticed because the previous narrators all told it that way so consistently. ep8's gameboard wants you to ask yourself: what makes you trust one unreliable narrator more than another? if this is so fake, what does that say about other gameboards built under the same constraints as this one?

the thing about the scoundrel and veils' ongoing beef is that the scoundrel simply cannot win it. veils is just,,, i'm not sure how to impart this to my non-FL followers. veils is. Way Out Of Her League. veils is an apex predator with thousands of years of experience hunting its own kind for sport and the scoundrel is a wannabe bat that can barely do basic bat things right. it's literally a level 100 mafia boss vs level 1 crook situation. veils CAN be killed by a human (and it WILL, since BaL is eventually canon to the scoundrel's timeline) but the scoundrel is very much not that human

“Above all, do not lie to yourself. A man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point where he does not discern any truth either in himself or anywhere around him, and thus falls into disrespect towards himself and others. Not respecting anyone, he ceases to love, and having no love, he gives himself up to passions and coarse pleasures, in order to occupy and amuse himself, and in his vices reaches complete bestiality, and it all comes from lying continually to others and to himself. A man who lies to himself is often the first to take offense. It sometimes feels very good to take offense, doesn't it? And surely he knows that no one has offended him, and that he himself has invented the offense and told lies just for the beauty of it, that he has exaggerated for the sake of effect, that he has picked on a word and made a mountain out of a pea--he knows all of that, and still he is the first to take offense, he likes feeling offended, it gives him great pleasure, and thus he reaches the point of real hostility.”
