what do you think about madney and the (potential) for more kids?

this is gonna sound really hypocritical seeing as I write buck and tommy with kids a lot, and literally have a fic that's story after story of her with Uncle Eddie, but I am so tired of storylines for couples always being about kids 😩

I would actually love it if Maddie's confession was, "as much as I loved having Mara here, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat, I don't think I want anymore children." That would be something different! I 100% know that it won't happen, please don't @ me lol! I'm just speaking personally.

Also, while I'm here. As much as I talk about Buck and Tommy with kids and how I think they'd be great parents, I'd actually really love it if one day Buck is the one to admit he doesn't want kids. And Tommy could go either way, so he doesn't mind it. Sorry to go off topic, I just think it would be funny/interesting to hear that while Buck loves kids and knows he's great with them, he sees himself as solely career focused.

Anyway, back to your question, I know we're gonna end up with more Madney kids, which is fine, but it's not a storyline I'm particularly interested in (although I reserve the right to change my mind at any given time).

Hey just a heads up if you're going to Minneapolis Pride this weekend, if you pass a booth with people asking you to watch a video and they'll pay you a dollar, don't do it. They're a group like PETA that's trying to trick you into watching a graphic video about animal slaughter. It's a ten minute video of animal gore that they're trying to play off as activism. If you are any type of sensitive to gore, don't watch the video.

lesson #1: nothing good ever happens when you're stuck in a car with your ex on the way to somewhere remote.

you blame iwaizumi for this one. who the fuck chooses to spend their birthday weekend in the fucking wilderness?

(okay, you don't actually think it's so bad. to be fair, he did plan this a year ago. and it did sound like a good idea. then. at the time. anywhere with the boys was always guaranteed fun―at least, until you and matsukawa broke up.)

"can you pass me the flashlight?" he points at the backpack behind you. when you hand it over, your fingers brush over his as he takes it away from you.

and you hate it, because―

lesson #2: you should never be alone with your ex when you still have feelings for them.

you'd agreed to take two cars to the camping spot: iwaizumi's with oikawa and hanamaki and matsukawa's with you. there was no way you'd fit in one, and hanamaki ultimately decided to ride with iwaizumi because, "you and mattsun have shit to sort out," he'd said.

with night setting and the two-hour headstart they managed to get ahead of you, the best thing you and matsukawa can do is to set up camp temporarily and wait for them to come back for you come sunrise.

you sigh.

leaves crack underneath your feet as you maneuver around your camping space. the light from matsukawa's flashlight tells you where he is, just a bit deeper in the forestry as he looks for wood to help set up the fire.

you unload the car in the meantime, bringing out some snacks and sleeping bags while waiting.

matsukawa eventually comes back with arms full of wood, and you help in whatever way you can, clearing the space and fetching more twigs when needed.

the entire car ride here had been quiet, so it's not surprising that this entire process has been equally as silent. until―

"did you already pull out your tent?" he asks, half of his body disappearing into the trunk of the car.

"huh?" you go closer, "i only brought out the sleeping bags."

then he sighs, ducking out from the trunk with a hand on his hip, "we only have one tent."

"what?"

"makki must have gotten yours with his when he decided to move cars."

his hand runs through his hair, a habit you know well. it lights up all sorts of weird feelings in your tummy

you don't know how to feel―

"i can sleep in the car."

―but you know that you definitely don't want him to do that. all things considered, you were friends first. and you've both been trying to be friends again since the breakup. you wouldn't want to cause him discomfort like that.

so, with a deep breath, you say, "it's okay, we can just share."

"are you sure?" he stares at you.

you nod.

after setting up the tent, you eat a few energy bars and clean up from the day's events. the campfire provides ample enough heat, but with how fast the flames are burning, you're doubtful it'll last the two of you the entire night.

it’s much later on, past midnight, that your doubts are proven right when you and matsukawa are cramped together in a tent made for one. it started to get cold a few minutes ago, and you've found yourself inching closer and closer to the warmth you’ve gotten used to laying against for the past two years.

he's only pretending to be asleep, you know that much, too. the rise and fall of his chest is hardly there; you can see it, how he's holding his breath being this close to you.

"issei," you whisper.

he opens his eyes, eyelids lifting lazily as he meets your stare. the vibration of his hum reverberates to you.

"it's cold."

for a moment, your stomach drops at the thought that he could ignore you; how it would make perfect sense for him to. you broke up with him after all, and he doesn't owe you anything, much less favors as intimate as this one.

but he closes the already dwindling gap between you, wrapping an arm around your waist as he pulls you closer. it's near, far too near for exes to be―noses touching and all.

"warmer?" his voice comes out hoarser through the whisper.

you nod, your head shifting up and down—which, truly, is where you ultimately fuck up. you feel it, a little chapped but still pliant against your lips.

in your carelessness, you accidentally brush your lips against his, the sensation alone surprising you enough to inch your head back as you mutter your apologies.

"sorry? really?" he asks, eyes half-lidded still as he chuckles.

his question settles into the small space you're in.

your vision trails from his eyes, down to the slope of his nose, until it lands on his lips again. a little split like you've always known, but still your favorite. still the only lips you want against yours.

when you lean in again, you know you're fucked, because―

lesson #3: the number one rule is that exes shouldn't kiss each other anymore.

rough art tips to learn and then break at your leisure.

the distance between your eyes is roughly one eye. the corners of your mouth dont extend past the middle of each eye. ears are roughly in the middle of the tip of the nose and the eyebrow. the eyes are in the very centre of the head. the neck is just a Little slimmer than the width of the head (varies with fat distribution, but fat tends to build up under the chin). hair is easier to draw when you plot out the hairline and then where it parts. leaving appropriate distance on the side of the face (cheekbone area and back to ear) contributes to making characters look more realistic/hot as hell. i dont know specific tips for that so use reference. an amazing reference/study site is lineofaction.com . if you think of the face in planes it makes it easier to construct (look up tutorials). if you draw a spiral like a tornado it can help you figure out awkward perspective for extended limbs (look up foreshortening coil technique). tangent lines are when two lines intersect and cause visual confusion (when it looks like a line that defines an arm is part of the line that defines a building, for example) and avoiding them makes your art way easier to comprehend. quick trick to good composition: choose a focal point (where you want your viewer to focus), detail that area the most, and make sure various elements of the piece are pointing to that focal point. you can use colours to contrast hue, saturation, and brightness and make certain elements of your drawing stand out. drawing in greyscale can help you figure out values. using black in a piece isn't illegal but you should know what you're doing when you do use it- it desaturates a piece and if used as a shading colour can desaturate and dull whatever youre shading too. if you use almost-black lineart and then add black to darken the very darkest areas it will do a lot to add some nice depth. the tip of your thumb ends just above the start of your index finger- your thumb also has two knuckles and all your other fingers have three. if you see an artist doing something you like (the way they draw noses or eyes or hair or anything else) you can try to copy that and see if you want to incorporate it in your style <- this is ENCOURAGED and how a lot of us learned and developed our styles. there are ways to add wrinkles to faces and bodies without making the character look a million years old, you just have to keep experimenting with it. The smile wrinkles around your muzzle dont connect to your mouth or to your nose; there should be a small space in between smile or nose and the wrinkle line. eyes when viewed in profile are like < aka a little triangle shape. think of the pupil like a disk and apply foreshortening to it (it looks like a line when seen from the side instead of a full round dot). subtle gradients can add a LOT to a piece. texture can also add a LOT. look up Tommy Arnold's work (his murderbot pieces are some of my FAVOURITE) and zoom in. find those random little circles he added and try to figure out why he added them there. light bounces. there's lots of way light bounces. sometimes it even spreads through the skin. i do not know these light tricks yet but i want you to know that they exist. draw a circle to indicate hand placement, draw a straight line between that circle and the shoulder, and then (normally at a right angle) draw a straight line on top of that line to find the placement of the elbow. elbows are normally placed Just above the hip when standing and your arm is at rest. there are no bad colour combos if you're brave enough about it, just fuck with the saturation and brightness until it works. keep playing. try new things. add your own tips to this post if you want or even expand on some ive mentioned here. good luck go ham etc

I don't see a whole lot of fanmission discussion on here, which is a bummer considering they're such a huge part of the classic Thief community and why it's endured so long. Here's a TTLG thread on how to set up both games for playing FMs. I personally don't use any fancy loaders, FMSel will be what you get by default, it works perfect and is all you need. TTLG overall is just a great place to be, it's good for FM hints/walkthroughs/recs and general Thief/Looking Glass discussion.

Ideally you have T2Fix already installed, but for setting your game up for FMs, you should do a quick reinstall and make sure that two options are ticked: common script modules, and T2FMDML. T2FMDML is a collection of fixes for Thief 2 FMs that wouldn't otherwise play nice with NewDark, and the scripts as I understand are for FMs that need them but either come packaged with older versions or without the scripts at all- there's a lot of older FMs out there that will be broken for you if you don't have both installed. You can just rerun the T2Fix installer for this, you don't need to reinstall the game or anything.

Thief Guild is where all the links lead, and it's a great site for finding FMs. You can filter by genre (city, thieves' highway, cathedral, etc.) or look through the usermade collections- for a start, I'd recommend looking at the collections specifically to find classic/early FMs, a category that I know I'm not hitting on much in my list here but is definitely worth checking out if you're at all interested.

Bonus Dark Mod rec: The Dark Mod is a fanmade, free, Thief-inspired stealth game. I haven't played nearly as many missions for it as I have for Thief, but it's still absolutely worth checking out to see if it clicks for you. If you only play one TDM mission, though, my personal rec is Iris.

There's three eggs left.

Mark listens to Ashe bustle around his room as he cracks the eggs into the pan. There's a bandage on the edge of his palm, same colour as his wraps, and he's careful not to contaminate it with any of the egg. He'd have to change it, then, and it's been two weeks since he's actually gotten the chance to sit down and have an uninterrupted breakfast with his fucking kid. The eggs mock him as they slip into the pan, one, two, three, but he doesn't have to worry about the slice Jaguar gave him so he considers that a win.

The music cranks on in the other room. Mark doesn't smile, but there's something nice about being able to recognize the song.

The eggs are fucking annoying him. His back is fucking annoying him. He took three goddamn painkillers the second he woke up and he's so tense he still almost zapped the lights out when he came into the kitchen this morning. Three fucking eggs, two hungry mouths.

Mark grabs two plates from the cupboard, sets them out as he hears Ashe migrate from his bedroom to the bathroom. He's humming, half singing, and a distant clatter lets Mark know that the kid is probably dancing, too. It's a good morning.

It's not going to be a good evening. Three fucking hits, two of them under such heavy security they might as well be under loco and key. It's the kind of job Mark wants to take a week to do. It's the kind of job Overlord knows he can do in an hour. It's going to hurt. He's already booked a hotel for tonight, stocked it with whatever he might need for recovery. Shitty to leave Ashe alone again. Safer to do it anyway.

Mark knows it's time to start plating up when the kid gets quiet. The music switches off, and the footsteps lighten. Ashe appears like a wraith in the kitchen doorway. Mark glances back as though just noticing him.

"...Morning," Ashe offers. He trudges into the kitchen, past Mark and towards the cabinet to grab a cup. There's tension in him. Mark has never seen the kid without tension, except that one year before he took out Ladybug and he had to install those fucking cameras.

"Morning," Mark answers. He slips two eggs onto a plate, drops a fork onto it, and pushes it over to Ashe. The movement strains his shoulder. Stupid fucking painkillers. "There's yours."

"Not hungry?" Ashe asks, like he fucking knows how to be casual. He hides himself away in the fridge too long, but Mark knows that the orange juice is literally right in front of his face.

"Nope," Mark answers anyway. He slides the egg onto his own plate, then pushes the pan away from the burner. He sits down without giving any explanation. Ashe expects it now. He finally grabs the orange juice and pours himself a glass. He drinks it all down in one go. Mark waits for him to pour a second glass. He takes his first bite to egg in the meantime, then occupies himself by cutting it up into smaller pieces with the edge of his fork. He got fucking bored sometimes too, okay. So sue him if he'd figured out the least efficient way to cut his fucking eggs. When Ashe sits down, Mark asks him, "Grades still okay?"

Ashe says, "Yup." He doesn't look Mark in the eye.

Mark says, "Good."

They eat in silence. The painkillers still haven't kicked in. Mark is putting more focus than he should fucking have to to not turn his fork into a shitty fucking lightning rod.

Ashe asks, "What happened to your hand?"

Mark turns his hand so the bandage is hidden again. "It's none of your goddamn business. Eat your eggs."

Ashe snaps his mouth shut and his teeth click. Mark makes a mental note about the dentist. Ashe glares at him, but Mark stares back (and it's not a glare, but it's not nice) and Ashe looks back down to his food.

He eats quick. Two eggs down the gullet of a growing boy, and then he's up and out of the room. "Don't slam your—" Mark calls out, but he's interrupted by the sound of the door slamming into its frame. Anything else he could have said is drowned out by the sound of Ashe's music. It's louder than before, and a song that Mark doesn't recognize.

Mark stares at Ashe's empty plate across from him. He finishes his egg in three bites, and singes the edge of his fork when it sparks.

Domesticity, he thinks. The plates clatter almost as loudly as Ashe's music when he drops them in the sink. The cut on his hand fucking stings with his hand movements when starts scrubbing with the sponge, and then he's distracted by how he'll have to be careful later tonight so it won't fuck up his aim.

He doesn't see Ashe again for three days.

This turned into a whole scene instead of a snippet but the whole fucking deal of the fic would be the focused on the winters dynamic—specifically how marks a great caretaker but STRUGGLES to dad and how it fucks with ashe and he SEES it fuck with ashe (because of course it's all from his pov) and he's got the power in the relationship and he never fixes it. he doesn't know how. just a whole lil character study into their bullshit :3 but especially a character study into ashe and how he copes with shit and the way his expectations would change over the years and mark struggling to be a parent without revealing ashe's existence to some REALLY. reallt scary people!!! AND fuckin remembering to get groceries and take out the teash and do the dishes at the same time!! Just the kinda fic overall that makes you go oh.. situation sucks :< ... brutal. hehehehe
