“Pay attention to me!” You poked at Ikuya’s back with mild annoyance, growing more irritated when he barely reacted. His face was once again stuck in his book, completely absorbed in the story. You usually didn’t mind it; if anything, you found it rather cute how deeply he loved books.

Today though, you were needy and in dire need of attention.

“Just one more page…” He spoke, eyes never leaving the colorful pages. Whether he realized he said this several times already was unknown. What was known was your patience snapping like a twig.

“Hey, what are you-” Ikuya yelped when you snatched the book out of his hand, sticking your tongue out at his baffled expression. “(Y/N), give that back! I wasn’t done reading it!”

“You’ve read it at least a hundred times! I bet you could recite the entire story by now!” You held the book further when he reached for it, giggling when he missed. “Oo, almost had it You have to be quicker than that!”

“Maybe, but I can also do THIS!” Ikuya shot his hands out, grabbing your sides and tickling like no tomorrow. Almost instantly you shot your arms down, book flying harmlessly into the nearest surface. “Holy crap, that worked? I didn’t know you were ticklish here!”

“Ahehahahhahahah! Iihiihihtuhuuuhuhuya!” You squealed, falling backwards as the green haired swimmer climbed over you, drilling into your torso mercilessly. “Gehahahhahahahahah, it tihiihhihiihckles!”

“So it does. Is this what you wanted the entire time? For me to tickle you?” When your only response was more laughter, he rolled his eyes fondly. “You and your funny ways of asking.”

“Whahahhaht’s thahahhahat suhuhuhposed to mehehea-AHAHHAHHAN!” You arched with a shriek when he found a particularly bad spot, kicking your feet helplessly. “IHIIHIKUYA!”

“Wow, you’re pretty ticklish, huh?” Ikuya laughed along with you, the book forgotten as he seeked out every tickle spot you had. “Well- you wanted attention, right? Here it comes!”

“None can tame the one the sailors call Shadow!” Y/n cheered as she danced along the rocks lining the tide pool.

A gentle laugh urged her to open her eyes.

“But you’ll still try.”

She pried an eye open and glanced down at the flooded pool. There, leaning on his arms beside her feet, was Ikyua. His shimmering teal tail flicked out of the small pool as the water receded, leaving him temporarily trapped. The fins around his ears twitched as Y/n crouched down in front of him.

“Obviously.”

Y/n booped his nose, making the merman flinch back and crinkle his nose. She sat down and dipped her feet into the pool next to Ikuya so he could lean his head against her legs.

They watched the sun continue to set on the horizon as another ship made its way into the nearby port.

“Sounds like it hasn’t worked out for everyone else who’s gone looking,” Ikuya mumbled as Y/n ran her hand through his hair.

“How long were you listening to me for?”

“Uh, whenever you started talking about setting sail.”

Y/n sighed, “So since the start.”

“I guess,” he shrugged.

Maybe she should have listened to Ikyua more. Maybe then she wouldn’t have been knocked from her ship as the Shadow’s cannons wrecked it. Her back slammed into the water, knocking the air from her lungs and forcing her to intake water as she sank down, pinned under a wooden beam. She tried to swim out from under it, only to knock her head against some more debris and intake more water in a shocked gasp.

Panic began to set in as her vision started to blur and she started to drown.

Suddenly she felt her face breach the water, the sharp cool air stinging her face, and she spluttered– spitting and coughing up water as forcing air into her lungs. She gasped, frantically splashing around. Her feet kept kicking something and she grasped at whatever was around her waist, faintly registering the feeling of scales and skin under her hands.

“-ey, Hey! Y/n!” A voice yelled as the thing around her waist tightened.

“I-Ikuya?” Y/n panted out, slowly relaxing in his hold and laying her head back against his shoulder. “What are you?”

“Y/n!”

The pirate captain looked down, squinting through the faint light cast by the burning ship to see Ikuya diving back under water to swim over. Panic re-entered her system and she scrambled against the person behind her again.

Ikuya resurfaced right in front of her and she reached out for him. He grabbed Y/n and pulled her into his chest, letting her bury her face in his shoulder.

“Thanks Rin.”

Y/n looked back to find a merman she didn’t recognize being joined by two others, one of whom she recognized as Hiyori.

“I- thank you,” Y/n breathed out. “Sorry for-”

Rin raised a hand.

“It’s fine, I probably would have panicked too.”

“Is she okay?” The other merman asked, his eyes must have been glowing because even though they were far from the fire she could see them clearly.

Ikuya looked down at her, eyes filled with worry.

“Are you okay?”

“I-” Y/n broke down into another fit of coughs, “I think so.”

The four men shared concerned glances, but the moment was interrupted by a splash as another merman joined them. This one came up right beside Ikuya and immediately addressed Y/n.

“How many people were on the ship?” His voice was stern, causing Y/n to flinch back into Ikuya.

“Ni-chan,” Ikuya hissed.

“Twenty six, not counting myself,” Y/n said, shivering as the wind picked up.

“You came out here with a crew of twenty-six?” Ikuya hissed, his claws cutting through Y/n’s shirt.

The pirate captain hissed as the claws broke skin and the salt water soaked into the open wounds. In turn she dug her nails into his arms.

“I wasn’t going to make anyone join me.”

“Ikuya,” Hiyori urged, placing a hand on his friend's shoulder, “we have to get Y/n out of the water.”

“You’re also hurting me,” Y/n muttered, making Ikuya let her go.

Ikuya’s brother pulled over a wooden plank and the brothers helped her up.

The wind child her to the bone, forcing her into a fit of shivers and concerning her saviors.

“Why-why did you ask about my crew?”

In the faint light cast by the wreckage of her ship, she saw Ikuya’s brother frown.

“I’m sorry.”

Y/n wakes up to warmth and softness. She winces at the bright light coming in through the window as she opens her eyes, groaning when she tries to move. There’s a weight against her upper legs and her neck feels stiff, but she finds she can’t speak. Her mouth is dry and swallowing grates like sandpaper, but she can’t reach the glass of water on the nearby table.

She must be moving a bit though, because the weight on her legs shifts and gets completely off her.

“Y/n?” Ikuya’s groggy voice calls.

She carefully turns her head to find him rubbing at his eyes and yawning.

As he blinks the sleep from his eyes, Y/n registers that they’re on land and her eyes widen in surprise.

This time when she tries to speak, Ikuya notices.

“Here.” 

He helps her sit up and drink some water, even though swallowing hurts.

“I’m glad you’re awake.” Ikuya stares into her eyes for a moment, unblinking, before clearing his throat and sitting back. “Let me go get Nao.”

“I-” Y/n croaked, but he was gone.

It was only for a moment though, as a man with gray-ish blue hair and glasses entered the room trailed by Ikuya. He sat down in the seat Ikuya had been occupying as Ikuya hovered just behind him.

“Hello,” Nao said softly, “does anything hurt?”

“Is ‘everything’ an answer?”

Ikuya let out a puff of laughter and Nao smiled, reaching out to cup her face. He turned her head towards him carefully, examining her eyes, before turning her straight again and picking up an empty cup.

“Can you open your shirt so I can listen to your breathing?”

Y/n tried to raise her arms.

“No.”

“May I?”

“Okay.”

Nao undid the first two buttons of her shirt before shifting to sit beside her on the bed and placing the cup against her chest. He listened carefully, asking her to take deep breaths before moving back to the stool.

“Ikuya?” Y/n asked, making him perk up.

“Why do you have legs?” Ikuya went to speak but she continued. “Am I… Am I, dead?”

“What? No!”

“I can assure you, you’re perfectly fine,” Nao said, buttoning her shirt back up. “I’ll leave you two alone for a minute.”

He got up and Ikuya quickly dropped back into his seat while Nao left. The bedroom door closed behind him, and a yelp was heard almost immediately as Nao scolded someone.

Ikuya clicked his tongue. “Ni-chan was probably trying to snoop,” he explained. Then he turned back to her. “You probably have a lot of questions.”

“Yes. You have legs.”

“Not curious how you got here or where we are?”

“Yes but… you know what, start wherever and, can I have some more water?”

“Of course.” He helped her drink another half cup of water as he started talking. “You passed out while we were waiting for Nao, this is his house.”

“How did you even find me?”

The merman looked away, twisting the sheets in his hands.

“I was worried about you.”

Y/n started to laugh before quickly being cut off by her weakened lungs. Ikuya placed a hand on her back, rubbing circles to try and ease the cough. Once she caught her breath again, she looked up at him with a smile.

“Thank you, but we really need to work on your… habit. Maybe you can join my crew with these new legs of yours,” she teased.

“You want to go back to being a pirate, after everything that just happened?”

“This isn’t the first ship I’ve lost,” Y/n frowned, “but, I might have issues getting a new crew.”

Y/n fell silent for a moment, and Ikuya watched her eyes glass over with unshed tears.

“They’re temporary, by the way.” Y/n sniffed and looked back up at Ikuya. “The legs. Nao’s a witch, he’s also my brother-in-law. My brother, Natsuya, lives here with him and sometimes I visit.”

“I like your tail better.”

Ikuya laughs softly, reaching out to link his hand with hers. His thumb rubs gentle arcs against the back of her hand.

“You’ll have to stay here awhile,” he said softly. “You know, to make sure you’ve recovered.”

“If it’s okay with Nao.”

“It is.”

“Okay,” Y/n smiled. “Then, you’ll stick around?”

“Of course.”

Random thoughts after Free!-The Final Stroke-

Soooo I watched the rinharu love confession movie again (aka The Final Stroke part 2) and I'm having a lot of feelings and thoughts I need to externalize (not just about rinharu). Since the only friends that might understand what I'm going to say are you, my lovely people on tumblr, here it goes (inserting read more because possible spoilers):

Part 1: supporting characters

Starting with some quick thoughts of things I would love to see being more explored but that I'm more than happy with the little moments we got because they're precious anyway (and it leaves space to our imagination which is amazing too):

Nagisa being the most upbeat person to ever grace this planet This boy is the most happy and adorable and angelic creature on earth! Seeing more about Haru's childhood and his friendships touched unknown places of my heart and a big part of it was because of little Nagisa. He's just so caring and intuitive even as a child and manages to lift up everyone around him it makes me warm (we specially see this by the way nobody can ever be actually annoyed with him giving them nicknames and just being overly affectuous all the time, kid's getting away with murder in this group and I find that amazing). JUST LOOK AT THIS LITTLE BEAN

The girls' friendship Gou, Isuzu and Ayumu are amazing on their own and the moments we have of them together are so refreshing??? I'm not sure I can even describe it but it just makes me really happy to see that the girls interact by themselves without the presence of the guys specially Isuzu and Gou (which I might ship but not really 'cause their friendship being totally platonic is important to me?) (I never said my thoughts would make completely sense so keep reading at your own risk) (but also don't give up on me ༼ つ ಥ_ಥ ༽つ). Either way, I do love the fact the anime is centred around men's swimming and the boys' growth together, but the women here are really important to that growth too (without Gou helping with the club I don't think the story would developt at all) and it's great knowing they have their own things and plans together even if not all of it happens on screen.

Kisumi, Sousuke and Rin's friendship Personally, I love Kisumi! I love how extroverted and cheeky and supportive of his friends he is (even Haru and their relationship is really funny to me but I might talk about it at some other point). The focus here is the fact Kisumi, Rin and Sousuke met in primary school and they might not have really kept in touch during their lives before meeting again later in high school/university but I love how every moment we have of them together we just know they've known each for a long time. I particularly found the last scene of Kisumi and Sousuke in Final Stroke really good because it's not a long scene at all and the others boys (Ikyua, Hiyori, even Kinjou) are present but they just bring me "we were little kids when we met and now we're adults we still manage to ambarass each other with the things we say" vibes. Love it, love them, I'd love to see more of the Sano trio.

And yeah this is longer than I thought it would be already and I got into rinharu fanfic mood so I'll just split my comments and babbling in parts. Next one will be about people's relationship with Haru in the movie probably (this one wasn't really descriptive, but the spoilers might appear more heavily in part 2).

i know free! has no romance, but shipping exists in this fandom for good reason. and honestly, the way i consider some of these tease moments actually influence the way i think what would be 'canon' to the story, if they actually confirmed anything.

what i mean is, while nothing romance related is canon, this is what the anime and especially the finale gave us that made me FEEL like it could be canon:

ikuya's one-sided puppy dog crush on haru in middle school.

makoto being in love with haru since elementary, that was never returned.

rinharu eventually being endgame.

for starters: i want to mention that i am a multi-shipper, and my favorite free! ship isn't even included in this post. this is just how i feel realistically. all ships are valid and nothing was confirmed canon / non-canon! this is just how i feel.

the main thing that makes me think ikuya crushed on haru is due to what was said during an interview with some of the creators. it was said that 'haru was ikuya's first love', in some sort of way. so while i think it was a little kid crush that ikuya got over quickly, it might have been realistically feelings that had been confused with admiration due to looking up to haru as his hero. kids will often mistake and confuse these feelings, even teenagers. this is something ikuya probably never properly put a name to it, and haru had no clue. fr that one flash back scene, totally was intentional...

now, the main reason i think makoto crushed on haru but was never returned is due to two main reasons: 1- how one-sided most of their scenes are, and you can blame this on haru tbh who is very emotionally withdrawn / doesn't understand his feelings very well. makoto crushed on haru for a very long time, and had what feels like an almost confession scene in middle school. which leads me, 2- this 'confession scene', which of course isn't really that, just screams one-sided emotions. its like haru is aware there's something in makoto's feelings, but he isn't sure how to name them and doesn't explore it. i think it probably takes makoto a very long time to get over his crush on haru, at times it escapes throughout their teenhood and haru doesnt fully grasp his feelings, but makoto is great at never ever pushing those feelings onto haru nevertheless. i believe if rin had never came into the picture, haru and makoto would've been endgame- that haru had the potential to eventually return makoto's feelings. there were many moments that felt like haru might have started to return these feelings, but it never got there.

heck, nagisa even knew how makoto felt for him.

bias aside, i do think rin and haru end up being endgame, but it is a very messy thing that doesn't happen until they're out of college. there's no doubt rin has something going on for haru since they met, no matter what anyone says, and it is only rin that brings out these special reactions out of haru. i do not think true confessions are shared during anime events, but i can totally see it once they are both confident in each other's lives to finally make something official. rin had almost confessed in australia, and he might have, if he hadnt been focused on helping haru out during his crisis there. rivals to lovers, fr. the main reason i think this is due to them being called soulmates, over and over again, but also just how special rin makes haru feel. haru's emotions is truly the window to the soul, here. even others outside of them tease them for the way they react to each other, often being stated to be 'taken by' the other. they always had a special tie together.

even makoto has a moment in the finale that suggests he finally understands / accepts that he won't be the one haru is meant for.

I really feel like Ikuya here gets kinkier the further he explores the world of sex, basically, he picks up things the more experiences these pleasures

He’d be a switch, though at first, he’ll seem like a sub partner when he first experiences sex, he’ll think so too for a while until he gets the chance to dominate his partner, and he’ll find that he enjoys that position of power too

“WHAT has gotten into you?” Ikuya twisted around, glaring at an innocent looking Hiyori as he buried his face further into his book. “You’ve been acting like a child the whole day!”

In Ikuya’s defense- he absolutely was. If he wasn’t throwing paper airplanes at him, he was dropping ice cubes down his back. And if he wasn’t doing that, he was nicking pens and erasers off his desk when the other wasn’t looking. Sometimes he’d even hit skip on his playlist just to set off the green-haired boy.

It was all in good faith. Ikuya was slowly falling back into overwork mode as midterms approached. This was the only way to prevent that.

“Hiyori!” When no answer came, Ikuya got up to confront him. He took his chance. “Hiyori, serious-LEE!” Their bodies flew through the air when the brunette tackled him, sending them safely into his bed. “What are yo-oohohohohoho! Whahahahhahait wahhahahait doohohohohhon’t!”

“Sorry, can’t hear you- too busy acting like a child!” Hiyori teased, laughing softly to himself as Ikuya squealed and thrashed beneath him, balled fist punching at his shoulders. “You’ve been overworking yourself again. I can’t handle another fainting scare because you forgot to eat.”

“Tahhahahhat whahahhahs oohohohohne tihihihiihime! Aheahhahhaa, Hihihihhioryi pleahhahahhahse!” Ikuya switched from punching to grabbing, trying to shove his friend off. Maybe it was the tickling zapping his strength, or perhaps he was overworked from studying all day- either way, Hiyori wasn’t budging! “Yoohohohou’ve mahahhahde yohoohohour pohohohoint, now stahhahhahhap!”

“Heh, alright, alright.” Hiyori laughed as he did so, pulling his hands away and watching Ikyua curl up. “Sorry, ‘Kuya. This is your own fault- if you took breaks when you were supposed to, I wouldn’t have to pick on you so much.”

“Heh..hehhe..soohohoho thahat’s what it is?” Ikuya sat up, something in his eyes that made Hiyori back away. “I geheht it now…come here, Hiyori.”

“W-Wahhait, whahaht are you doohoohhoing?” The brunette’s eyes widened as he was pushed back into the bed, Ikuya hovering above him.

“I’m taking my break.” He raised a wiggling hand, eyes dancing. “And you’re gonna help!”

ok some tokyo boys dnd headcanons lets go

hiyori: the DM and probably the one suggesting they play. surprisingly he does really expressive npc’s and his villains are FUN (DM!hiyori just became very dear to me help)

ikyua: he’s IS that bitch and makes a thiefling ranger, dramatic backstory and all. hiyori makes fun of him for it and yes, he deserves it. he tries to play a cool character but it ends up being the one in the party everyone babies the most

asahi: he says all the magic stuff’s too complicated and makes a dwarf fighter, but he doesn’t end up fighting all that much because his character makes friends with the npc’s so easily (his charisma score is crazy high on accident but hiyori lets him keep it)

kisumi: also that bitch and makes a half-elf bard. the face of the party and usually the one to save the day with a well timed vicious mockery

haru: (he’d be a good DM honestly but definitely doesn’t have the time or energy for it lol) unsurprisingly, he makes a water genasi druid because uhh you can shape-shift into animals?? his backstory is like. crazy good and the party ends up mixed up in it quite heavily at some point

makoto: he’s the last one to make a character and hiyori mentions they don’t technically have a healer yet so... he makes a firbolg cleric that’s just. the sweetest thing? since there’s not really “winners” and just teamwork his competitive side doesn’t show and he can just embrace the support character life. but! clerics are still really strong fighters! also he could multiclass as a cleric/paladin at some point in the future

they start with a ready-made campaign but hiyori does end up writing his own story to better utilize all their characters skills and backstories as they go on. they’d definitely like to goof around and explore more than fight so he makes them fun puzzles and mysteries to solve. when they do fight it's almost always only against villains and npc’s because they quickly learn neither haru nor makoto’s characters (or they themselves tbh) like fighting creatures. it’s so bad it almost tears the party apart in their first session lol. kisumi’s bard and asahi’s fighter are an absolutely chaotic comedic duo that get them in trouble more times than they can count, but somehow they always manage to talk themselves out of it. in general the party’s dynamic mirrors their real relationships quite closely, but surprisingly haru’s druid and kisumi’s bard are unstoppable together on sneak missions and debates against villains

i’ll stop there so this doesn't take up my whole night but there’s so much potential here!
