My interpretation of Mr Tichy because I'm obsessed your honor....

I got myself The Star Diaries book on my birthday, and it is really, really good. Ijon is such a fun character... Apparently, The Star Diaries isn't the only book he's in, so it's book hunting time.

Also, I'm not sure if it's correct, but I think his name might literally translate to Silent Eon, and that is literally the most metal name for a sci-fi book protagonist I've seen.

I am sooo close to falling headfirst into a new special interest with the works of Stanislaw Lem, especially the short story collection Star Diaries around the spacefaring adventurer Ijon Tichy. I fucking love the Washing Machine Tragedy, I just finished The Futurological Congress and bought a physical copy of the rest of the stories.

But what if those stories are bad? What if I don't like them? What if I don't have the mental capacity to finish them? What if they have bad political opinions about 60s and 70s era Poland my uneducated ass doesn't get? What if Lem is a "bad" author the likes of JKR and I'm telling on myself by liking him? Well, he's dead, so at least there's that.

Wow, my mental health is in great shape these days.

i've been slowly reading the star diaries which is a lem collection of short adventures of his character ijon tichy & involves his contact with a lot of vastly different species and societies which are rendered with a similar care and wonder to those of all tomorrows but lacking any evolutionary information or, in most cases, human connection & all tomorrows' inclusion of those really let it scratch a good itch for me ...... i love what the tichy stories do too but for somewhat different purposes & to somewhat different ends. Ultimately it's just so fun and cool the way a shift in granularity and/or in which details are included can alter the way a structurally similar concept hits and where it's aiming as well

Taking a page from the book of fic advice from @the-apostates-martyr: I feel I need to write a one shot for each 'next long fic' idea that's currently taking up rental space in my head at the moment (and giving me time to finish one project before starting another). I *might* finally be branching out from pretty exclusively writing Trinity Gate fics.

My thought to give myself time is to reblog both one shots under this post, then include a poll to help decide which one to go with if the one shots don't work either of them from my system.

Lest anyone blame me, I'm pointing the finger squarely across half of VC tumblr (ilu all seriously, it's been so long since I wrote this much).

Idea #1: Marius and Armand interrupt their travelling their world to rescue Lestat from himself after he finds out about the death of his human family. More or less based off this idea from 2014, but @uncivilcivilservice's fault for bringing it to my attention in 2023.

Stand out moments include: Marius coming in with a flaming baton to pull Armand out from his Children of Darkness initiation, then helping him grieve Riccardo. Armand suddenly having an annoying little/big brother figure he never asked for. The three of them living in Marius' Greek island hideaway.

Idea #2: Armand is the antagonist in Queen of the Damned, until he decides he isn't anymore. Based loosely off some moments from this post by @desertfangs and these other posts by @eosphoroz.

Stand out moments include: Armand forgetting about a human pet long enough that it expires between visits. An actual reunion scene between Armand and Marius. Armand dealing with feelings of bitterness and isolation without needing to fall in love with another person.

Ijon Tichy Raumpilot Empfehlung | Markus van Klev - DJ und Autor

If you know Stanislaw Lem, you know him as the author of the novel Solaris, this masterpiece you've been trying to read, but it's so weird and difficult and what is it even about? Also there's a George Clooney movie somehow.

Anyway, please consider trying Lem again. Some of his stuff is just delightfully funny and absurd in the best possible way. The short story "The Washing-Machine Tragedy" is honestly the funniest thing I've ever read.

Granted I haven't read much of Lem yet, there isn't much available currently, but everything was at least an interesting time. Spare Solaris, try some Ijon Tichy stories instead.
