A Lovestruck English Lesson 👩‍🏫: Alanna 👩🏻‍🦰 season 1, set 1

I wanted to read Alanna mainly as a comparison to Cash. I'm not really a big fan of the exes storyline but I was curious to see how that would play out as well as get a feel for how her route sets up the premise of the series.

Imagine how happy I was to discover that the writing is really really good. Good enough to warrant a post and to keep reading, despite having no interest in Alanna. 🤷‍♀️ (Kiran and Rafe however....I'm looking forward to their inevitable routes cause they are both ridiculously attractive)

I also felt Lana's route set up the premise of the series better. It felt more streamlined and less scattered with it's flow of information.

Let's look at the writing:

Personification: recognition "punches" her in the throat. It's a violent image but it works in conveying the shock at seeing her ex. MC is reeling.

Prescient: prophetic, predictive, having knowledge of future events

Charles Sanders Peirce was an American philosopher, logician, mathematician, and scientist who is sometimes known as "the father of pragmatism"

Ferdinand de Saussure was a Swiss linguist, semiotician and philosopher. His ideas laid a foundation for many significant developments in both linguistics and semiotics in the 20th century.

Word choice is important when you're writing this way, without the luxury of as many prose sentences as you need to get a point across. Here "teeth clenched" and "swallow" show the reader how aggrieved MC is, how she has to push down every question, how much the entire situation is bothering her. Clenched teeth are anger, swallowing it down is control over it.

“May? Are you there?”

Alanna’s voice is soft, warm and rich like the creeping dawn after a drizzle. It washes over you like sunlight, and you close your eyes for a few seconds, enjoying it.

“Yes.”

“Can I come in?”

There’s a terse second—is this really the right choice, a voice that sounds suspiciously like your brother’s asks in the back of your mind, it’s a dangerous game, you’re heading into it head-first—and then you’re scrambling out of your chair, moving towards the door with clear, curt steps, expression set into grim determination.

“It’s late,” you say, as soon as you open the door. Alanna smiles that brilliant smile of hers, eyes sparkling like an emerald underwater struck by a ray of sunshine, and your breath hitches.

This woman…

“And you’re still working.”

You chance a look at Richard’s study, scowl deepening just slightly.

“I’m not.”

“What were you doing, then?”

Proof gone in giants leaps of fire and smoke, your brother’s dark glare after you had fallen silent in your attempts to dissuade him, because it was best if he didn’t know. Except everything had changed, now, and you wanted to mend your relationship, but communication was still hard and try as you might, you couldn’t think of a way to fix it—

You clench your jaw, looking away.

“Thinking. That’s all.”

“Overthinking, you mean,” Alanna says, all mirth gone from her expression. She looks at you with honest worry, reaching for your hand. You don’t stop her. “That’s not good. Let me help? It’s no use if you worry yourself to death, you know.” She tugs you in her direction, gently, asking you to follow. “Let me distract you.”

“That’s not going to help.”

“Why do you doubt me so?” She laughs, smiling again. “C’mon.”

“It’s not another party, is it?”

Her smile turns secretive, teasing. “You’ll find out in a second.”

You narrow your eyes after a moment. “The roof? You want—”

“I remember,” she says, so quietly it sounds like a prayer, “when you said you were more comfortable at night and quiet spaces. That is absolutely okay. It won’t kill me to avoid parties for one night. Besides, the moon is beautiful tonight.”

You are greeted by twinkling stars and a chilly breeze. Alanna’s warmth is possibly searing as she coaxes you to sit, eyes fond, and for a second every single thing in your mind melts away, all the warnings from your brother and all your worries about the Society.

“What’s your favorite constellation?”

“My— where did that question come from?”

“Shh, I’m trying to distract you, May. Play along?”

“My… my favorite constellation…” You pause, mulling it over. “It used to be Orion, because it was the first constellation I learned, but now it’s probably Cassiopeia. Do you now the myth?”

“The vain queen.” Her reply is immediate, curiosity dancing on her eyes like shadows cast by a bonfire. “How come?”

“When I was little and Richard wanted to have a night out, Mom would take hours getting ready. My brother was a huge Greek mythology fan at the time so he excitedly nicknamed her that, Cassiopeia. We used to tease her about that all the time. It’s not the best thing, I know, but—”

“It’s heartwarming.”

You smirk. “Heartwarming? Comparing my mother to a woman so vain she almost had to sacrifice her own child?”

Alanna blinks, before shaking her head, recognizing you attempt to tease her and skipping over it without missing a beat. “No, no, not the myth. I meant the family thing. You like that constellation because it reminds you of that moment. Of your mom. That makes it special. Worthwhile. It’s a beautiful reason to like the Cassiopeia constellation.”

A shy blush tints your cheeks with all the force of a tsunami. “Oh.”

“You’re an amazing person, you know that? You know how to cherish moments like those.”

This woman, gosh…

“W-what about you? Your favorite constellation, I mean.”

“I’ve always liked Crux, but I don’t have a favorite. I’m not a huge constellation fan, mostly because I’m really bad at finding them.”

“Really.”

“Yup. I just don’t have the eye for them, I guess. I love star gazing, though.”

“How awfully romantic of you.”

It hits you a moment later. The two of you, sitting as you are on the roof under a blanket of stars. It brings to the surface all the complications your relationship holds, but… you don’t want to acknowledge them. Not tonight.

Alanna’s smile softens. “Did I succeed? In distracting you.”

“You did.”

“Great. Then you’ll go straight to sleep after we go inside, I hope.”

“What? Sleep? But I need to—”

“You need to rest, May. The proof you want to present Santiago with? The Inner Circle can help with that. You don’t need to stay in Richard’s study, not when it brings so many bad memories. The last thing I’d want is for it to sour the good ones.”

Her words startle you. You hadn’t realized it until then, but at the rate this was going—all the revelations and never-ending secrets and constant reminders of Richard’s fuck ups—it was going to take a toll on your memories. If… if someday, the Cassiopeia memory ended up like that…

“You’re right,” you find yourself agreeing. “You are. I don’t want Richard to ruin every single thing.”

“He won’t. You are too strong to let him, but for that…” She stands up. You were still holding her hand, so she pulls you up with the motion, gently and carefully, “…you should be well rested.”

“Noted. Let’s go, then.”

But in all seriousness, I’m happy for all Alanna fans out there. Kinda was expecting Emilio’s Season 2 to be released before her, because of people saying that she’s toxic & the MC trusts her way too easily after being hurt by her in the past. Yeah, I read her story too, and I 100% agree, but maybe we should give her a second chance?

Still waiting for Emilio though.

So assuming basic character background hold true within the different routes of IHS, Alanna is our ex. Make of that what you will (still a nicer person than the smarmy manipulative politician they decided people would want for the wlm pilot route. In other news, Kiran from IHS is a babe and looks like they (can't recall if pronouns were used yet) look like they could be siblings with Jace from QOT and now that is my headcanon.

Oh yeah, I literally froze when that plot point was revealed. Literal “what?”, and then I got excited thinking about everything that would mean 😅 whirlwind route, necessary (and sometimes awkward) conversations all exes have, etc. And she was so sweet in Cash’s route! I can’t wait to see her on her own!

Kiran has this mysterious vibe... I remember her pronouns were she/her. That headcanon is amazing, anon 👀 that’d be so cool! The mysterious vibe runs in the family 😂😂 - Mod Jessa
