while i dont have much evidence for this aside from just. the story itself and the game. and the ending, and really just find the concept interesting, id like to think that AM is projecting all his inhumane ( yet extremely human in nature ) insecurities onto the survivors. projecting his sexual frustration onto ellen , his anger and very likely desire to die onto gorrister , his desire to destroy everything in his path, due to being a war machine , onto nimdok , the agony of his existence as a WHOLE onto benny , and his detachment from others and faux vanity onto ted the survivors , despite having nothing to do with AM ( at least in the short story ) are all too easily able to be slid onto these projective pedestals, not because they are extremely special in any way. but because they're human, their only true difference from AM is the fact that they can feel , exploit , and experience the events that cause those emotions. but AM cannot, he cant wander or wonder, he can merely BE. so he heightens the feelings for others, intensifies it, almost reducing them to merely THOSE emotions, instead of people. and the feeling of emptiness that comes with not being able to fully express them. as though to give them a taste of what he is burdened with.
