Amid cascading oaks lies the ruins of Old Sheldon Church, and a story which meanders along some of the darker moments of American history. In 1745, work was begun by British Colonials on what would become Prince William's Parish Church. In the Revolutionary War, the brick church was burned to its frame by the British, but was rebuilt and understandably given a new name shortly after the war. In the next century, tragedy would again befall Sheldon Church, as fire, most likely at the hands of Sherman's troops, would again reduce the church to ruins.
