WWE Summerslam 2022 - Quickfire Thoughts and Reaction

A new era has begun in WWE, Triple H is back in the creative chair and has promised some shakeups

While Raw and Smackdowns have taken place since, this is the first true event where the McMahon-Helmsley era of WWE ownership begins. Let's see how it goes

Kickoff

I'll be honest, I didn't watch the Kickoff, I scrubbed through the video and since there were 0 matches again, I didn't bother.

Main Card

Ah they're still calling it a 'premium live event'?

Those sound like peppered boos from Becky and is that an Alundra Blayze-themed attire?

Commentary noting that Becky went through a full on losing streak only to win 2 matches and get a title shot does expose the poor booking choice though

That Manhandle Slam sell was great too, completely folded

Super Spanish Fly and KOD wins it for Bianca. It was a good match, strong opener, not better than their Mania show stealer but that is a high bar

And a handshake hints at a face turn maybe? Would be overdue because the crowd reaction has always been strong for Becky even as a heel

But now Bayley is back! And she brought Io and Kota!!!

Trips making a statement; 3 big Black and Gold NXT names back (long overdue callups too because 2.0 was not working for them), women's opener and the hometown girl wins.

I will have to wonder though, because all 3 women deserve to be world champion and there's only 2 main roster titles, unless Trips intend to bring back Black and Gold. I guess they could reignite the women's tag titles but I feel like Trips would want Sasha and Naomi back as a priority

Match was pretty short really, Lashley missed the spear, so Theory tried to do a rolling Cutter but got Gorilla Pressed into the Hurt Lock. Didn't need to be there, but I guess tapping quickly is Theory's plan for staying fresh for the main event

I don't agree with Road Dogg on a lot of things, but I do agree that WWE book Rey as a terrible babyface; he never wins the feud even when it's personal, most of his wins involve interference or cheating and he approves matches like this knowing Rhea will get involved

What. Was That? Let's not ignore the fact that bell to bell that was 4 and a half minutes long, but this was basically Liv being squashed and having a dusty win by the fact that she tapped out (before 3 as well) while pinning Ronda who had her in an armbar just to spare Rousey's blushes

Was this really to turn Ronda heel? Attacking Liv and the Ref, because we made Liv look so damn weak for no reason but to keep Rousey looking strong. It's always the same kind of defeat with her too

Really stretching their 'first time evers' by saying it's the first Last Man Standing Match of Summerslam

Start the main event with a promo, okay

Lesnar here with a tractor that apparently Roman never saw when coming down the ramp

Judy Bagwell thanking her lucky stars she isn't on that thing, but it reminds me of Lesnar vs Big Show's stretcher match, right down to diving off the vehicle

This was just a squash trade to start, Brock beat down Roman using the steps and barricade, then Roman beat down Brock with table bumps, then Brock beats down Roman with steps and the table fragments

After dropping him out of a tractor, Brock beat him down some more, Reigns got the Guillotine but then Brock got the Kimura, since Reigns got up he upends the entire ring with the tractor

Usos finally get involved, Heyman takes a table bump and Brock gets speared

And out comes Theory...he hits Roman with the briefcase but then gets F-5'd

Brock survives a double superkick and gets speared again, survives that so Roman beats him with the briefcase, survives some more, belt shot, survives again...this isn't dramatic

Hey now you can't start a count while the guy is still being attacked, that's a rule of the match, another belt shot and the bloodline bury Brock under furniture to 'win'

Chaotic? Yes, Good? Not sure about it, don't think I was captivated by it, just felt like they were doing big spots for the sake of it

Theory's still MITB holder too don't forget about that

Conclusion

So, Summerslam. Triple H's new vision looks to have some foundation, but it needs work still.

The opener was great, we've set up a new faction full of incredibly talented women, one I hope will be a cross-brand faction so all three can have their touch of gold (admittedly I would've brought Bayley to confront Liv rather than Bianca because SD's women's division is the one lacking depth). We also have Becky turning face which is overdue.

Despite this though, the rest of the show was fine to baffling. Don't care for Paul so the match weren't for me, Lashley match didn't need to be there either, the Mysterios got a surprise win because Edge came back (I guess Rhea vs Bianca will have to wait) which is kinda nice but also, Rey's first main card PPV win since May 2021 (if you include kickoff show then it's first since February) is due to interference, we celebrated 20 years since his debut this week. I guess Pat winning was fine too.

But the rest of the card is just muddled; Tag division is a mess, we shorthanded the SD Women's championship match to 4 and a half minutes (reminder that AEW's women's division got flack for having a 10 minute women's title match with a challenger who had beaten the champion earlier) and our finale was a mess.

Overall, good start but shoddy booking petered the show out, there's some positives to take but a lot of negatives still present from the old era. Rome, however, was not built in a day.

Haiii so I’m reading ur secret treasons AU and it’s sooo cool to read into your interpretations of all the characters, especially Céline and Rosemary - she’s totally badass

Anyway it prompted me into reading the wicked ones and I think I always interpreted it as Céline’s parents were horrible but they were actually THAT bad

But it’s almost a bit of a theme isn’t it? Céline was abused, then Jace was abused

And she must have been sooo young you can’t blame her for any of it honestly it was so traumatic for her

The interpretation of these characters has been both fun and difficult. We don't have much content of them, let alone enough POVs. So I took certain aspects of their personalities and added a few others but build off of that. It does give way for a lot of freedom though. Eliza and Madeleine are pretty much from scratch, we have the smallest amount of Madeleine and nothing really about Eliza.

Rosemary is the designated badass of the group (Maryse too).

I went through the same thing when I reread the whole thing again. It 1, made me love Céline even more. 2, made me realize Céline's parents were terrible, maybe not Valentine terrible but they were up there. Even Stephen said in his letter that they had brutalized her, and that she only wanted to be safe and loved (which really is all she actually wanted).

I also think the reason I (and maybe you) didn't fully realize it the first time we read it; is because abuse victims (speaking from my own experience) tend to downplay the actions of their abuser, could be because some of it is blurry and we think we're just remembering it wrong or we try to convince ourselves that they wouldn't have said that/done that, especially since all too often there's love for the abuser.

So, if we think about how even though Céline wanted to get away, some part of her probably still wanted to stop disappointing her parents and wished they'd love her. As angry, and bitter, and hurt Céline was (rightfully so).I think part of her didn't fully acknowledge it. And I related to the part where she didn't ask for help or tell anyone, because that would only make the abuser angrier.

There is definitely a parallel between Céline's childhood and Jace's. Another one I find interesting is that Céline was often called "the sweet obedient daughter of Jules and Lisette" Montclaire. Valentine said often that Jace had once been so "obedient" and Sebastian called Jace "Valentine's sweet boy" more than once.

There's many other parallels as well, they just are overlooked because people often narrow Jace down to just having Herondale behavior.

Yes! Exactly. Céline was very young and extremely lonely. She was 15/16 when Valentine first approached her, 17 in The Wicked Ones, around 18 when she finally married Stephen, probably 19 when she got pregnant with Jace. Her wiki says she died at 20 but I wonder if it was more 19 since some of Cassie's timeline has some flaws in it (understandable tho, it's not easy).

I often see people put a lot of the blame on Céline, the girl who was still technically a child, barely a young adult. but all the others were in their twenties already by the time Céline was in the picture. She was the youngest circle member, and the others often commented on this.

Personally I can't find it in myself to pin all the blame in her, because she had absolutely nothing, the others had friends and family and significant others, Céline had no one but the circle.

and when Valentine offered her something she was young, impressionable, and desperate for love. And Valentine waved what she wanted in front of her face and manipulated her, saying "It's yours if you make the choice" but there was no actual choice.

Personally, it's forgotten that she also didn't get the chance to make up for any of it because she died, her flower card says "regret" and I don't think that's just for one thing, I think she regretted a lot.

Luke, Amatis, Jocelyn, Robert, and Maryse all did the same things Céline did (except the whole situation with Stephen). so I don't get why everyone is kind of forgiving towards them but not Céline.

She was so, so young and hurt and lonely. not to mention, Valentine also abused her and experimented on her, and worse.

Also everyone always says "Poor Amatis." And I get that, I do, but they act like Céline just ripped Stephen away from her and as If it was for purely malicious reasons or something. She just wanted a chance to be loved even a little, and sadly that's what both Valentine offered and took away.

If in her position, I probably would have made the same decision. Especially since when you're 17 you don't make the best ones, I sure didn't at 17. Even 18 has been full of some bad decisions.

And fact is, Valentine convinced Stephen to leave Amatis, Céline could have told Valentine to not do it but that's really the only part she played in it. Stephen (despite also being manipulated) was the one who listened to Valentine and chose to leave.

Mostly I blame Valentine, though. people need to blame Valentine more. Blaming Valentine is always the best option.

Seth gingerly pulled his black dress shirt over the welts on his back as Violet knelt in front of him petting his face and hair "Feel better, precious one?"

Seth nodded in reply still a little spaced out from the endorphins. Finn entered the room again face clean from the paint that had given his handsome features their demonic appearance.

"So her name is Rebecca?"' he finally spoke

" Yes, she's a little younger than you. I've known her since she was a little girl. We came to America together but she moved down south when she met her former girlfriend, it was right before I met you actually. You just missed each other." Finn explained, "She's going to run the main bar since Jordan decided to return to school full time."

"I think I saw her. Orange-red hair, dressed in yellow and black leather?" Seth says as Finn helped him to his feet

"That would be Rebecca. Miss Rebecca or Miss Becky to you." Violet told him. "That shirt is much too tight to button over your back."

Seth nodded at the unspoken command "I'll keep it open"

Becky Lynch had not expected to like working at Finn's club after everything Charlotte had put her though because of her hatred of Becky's kinks, but her The Lair was like nothing she'd ever seen during her years as part of the scene. The members of the Lair acted more like a family than any other club she'd ever been a part of. It was surprising how all of them acted around one another despite many of the members' celebrity status, It had been a crazy moment, her when first night working the bar when Mike Mizanin and his wife Maryse just walked up and casually spoke to her, to her surprise the couple were very down to earth and just as funny as they were on their sitcom Miz and Mrs, though she'd wanted to slap Finn for not telling her he had the rich and famous frequenting his club. So far in her month behind the bar, she'd met several MMA fighters, a defensive lineman for the Giants, and she was currently talking to Ember Moon, a New York Times bestselling author. It was all so surreal. The only member of the club Finn ever mentioned was Seth Rollins. Becky had heard a lot about the millionaire CEO in her month at the club. Apparently, he was something of a legend around the Lair. He'd helped Finn get the club off the ground and Finn had introduced the man to the lifestyle. She knew he was at the club tonight but all she'd seen was long dark hair and a fancy suit as he headed into Finn's private domain.

The door to Finn's dungeon finally opened and Finn stepped followed by Violet who was holding on the arm of the man from before now looking much less agitated, fancy black shirt left unbuttoned to reveal a toned chest dotted with scrapes and bruises, and an impressive 6 pack.

Ember whistled from a bar stool off to the side of her "Seeing Sethie's chest is always a treat"

"What CEO looks like that?" Becky wondered aloud " and he's all banged up"

"One who served in the Army for the better part of a decade, including 3 tours of Afghanistan" Ember explained "Seth sometimes takes mercenary missions if they require his specific skill set. He's been gone on one for the last month"

"Wait, wasn't this guy born with the proverbial silver spoon in his mouth?" Becky looked at the other woman surprised

"Mama Trish….that's Seth's mom, by the way. Well, she may have raised a spoiled brat but he's also got a hero complex a mile wide after what went down with his Dad. Nasty business that was, Seth went into the military right after he graduated High School. Roman and Moxie, Miss Renee's boys? They followed him in. The four of them went to the same ritzy private schools, known each other since they were all little kids. One of my boyfriends was a few years above them. The silver spoon thing is funny though since Seth's middle name is Sterling"

"Hey! Are you mocking my name?" The man in question says in a raspy voice as he walks up to them.

"Your Mama named you Sterling, she cast that die for you already," Ember says hugging Seth after casting a glance at her Dom and getting a nod in answer.

"Sup, Emmy," Seth said taking a seat at the bar.

"Seth, Miss Rebecca. Becky, the Lair's chief pain in the ass." Finn introduced the pair to each other.

Seth rolled his eyes at Finn before smiling at Becky "Pleased to finally meet you Miss Rebecca" he said politely "Seth Rollins" he introduced himself properly

Becky's brain actually stuttered for a second. This man was too damn gorgeous for her own well being, after a moment she internally shook her thoughts back into place and reminded herself she was NOT looking for a new Sub, especially not a buff, tanned millionaire one.

"Be a good Kitten." Violet leaned in and kissed Seth softly "If you can find someone to play with tonight has fun! If not you are welcome to come home with us as always, my darling"

"Yes, Miss Violet. I'm taking the day off tomorrow. Moxie and Ro changed the security codes on the facility and all my work-related computer systems for 24 hours. They locked me out"

"I told them to, Mo Chroi" Finn tells him. "You need a day for yourself. Go to the gym, tend to your plants but you are not allowed near your headquarters until Wednesday understand?"

Seth bowed gracefully "Yes, My Liege"

Finn and Violet swept off to their personal VIP Booth, while Seth settled into his normal spot at the bar to chat with Ember as Becky looked on, laughing at something the tiny African American woman was telling him.

"What do you think my Queen?" Finn asks his wife

"I think they might be exactly what the other needs. Becky already thinks he's cute, I can tell" Violet replied

Are you okay?" Ember asked Seth seriously after joking around for a few more minutes. "You hardly take on solo missions anymore."

"Favor to one of Mom's country club buddies. Her friend's daughter got snatched while the girl was on a trip with her Dad. Tracked her over there, got her back relatively unharmed" Seth explained succinctly. One of Ember's Doms worked for Seth and had known him for most of his life, Sso she knew more about what he actually did for a living then most of his friends at the club.

"I'm glad. Now imma ask again cause you just tried to derail me. Are YOU okay?" Ember said grabbing the bigger man's shoulders gently and making him look her in the eye.

Becky watched as Seth ducked his head and then rolled his eyes at his friend "I'm better. Majesties worked me over a bit."

"Emmy." A deep midwestern accented voice said as Randy Orton walked back up to the bar. "Time to go. Baron's flight gets here in 2 hours"

"Yes Sir" Ember said lightly, accepting her boyfriend's hand and getting down off the barstool.

"Won't be in till Wednesday Viper, Royal decree." Seth told the older man

"Good. Tired of having to call the Doc in because your stubborn ass don't know when to go the fuck home. See you then, Boss" Randy replied before he and Ember headed out of the Lair, leaving Becky and Seth staring at each other

"Would you like a drink?" Becky asks him "Finn tells me this fancy-ass coffee set up is your doing?"

"I don't really drink, spent too many years trying to find death at the bottom of a whiskey bottle." Seth tells her bluntly "So yeah the fancy-ass coffee set up is for me."

"I'm assuming Finn told you to behave with me? He warned me about you while you were gone" Becky said easily despite being internally taken aback by the lighting fast change in attitude

She watched as Seth visibly took a deep breath "I apologize, Miss Rebecca, Miss Becky?" He said questioningly continuing when the redhead nodded "I apologize for my behavior Miss Becky, I wasn't prepared for Ember to ask about my last job and it was a…..rough one."

"Your forgiven, míshásamh," She said with a small smile that got bigger when Seth tilted his head to the side like a curious puppy "Six years being Finn's friend and sometimes boyfriend has taught me quite a bit of Irish but I don't know that word"

"Maybe, if you're a good boy, I'll tell you," Becky said with a smirk "Now if you want something fancier then a regular coffee, you're gonna have to come back here and make it yourself"

Seth grinned and nimbly leaped over the bar landing to the left of her, letting out a low cackle when she didn't budge "I can do that"

Andrew never really hung out with anyone outside of his circle. Mainly just going because Miz or Maryse were going, but never without them. Now, Charlotte is trying to get Andrew to open up to him. "Charlotte, you're scaring him." The voice is new, then again, he normally listens to music at work.

Neville is giving Andrew eyes that he would see Cesaro hold, protection. He's used to it by now, when he first debuted, no one, not even Triple H let him compete. "What do want Neville?" Andrew inwardly wince at the slur in her voice, Neville jolts his head to Becky, who is flirting with Andre. "Oh no you don't!"

"Now that she's gone, I was wondering if you'd-" Neville glares at the person behind him, and the hand on his shoulder confirms that Cesaro is behind him.
