If I had more money than I'd ever spend in a lifetime, I'd spend my life operating a pizzeria at a loss. Something with the slogan of "it ain't italian but you're hungry" - and a statement of how this is not authentic italian pizza because the owner's estranged aunt's italian ex-husband would not serve pizza in his italian restaurant because as far as he was concerned, a pizza is the "just throw that shit together" dish that you make out of leftovers, and he would not serve that to paying customers even if they wanted it. True story btw.
But I'd just like to run a place where the staff is allowed to tell rude customers to fuck off. And if they're scared to do that, they can summon me downstairs to do it myself (this fantasy involves having my own apartment upstairs of the restaurant), because you don't fucking disrespect my staff like that. Develop a reputation as a place where You'd Better Act Yourself or you get nothing, which elevates the quality of the food in peoples' minds because it's human to assume that more work=more worth, and if a pizza place can afford to simply throw rude customers out, that clearly must mean that the food is just that good that going back is worth it anyway.
Hiring enough people to get the work done in a leisurely pace and occasionally have the time to chat with each other or customers. You just do the job I gave you in the time I gave you, don't steal anything and don't watch porn off your phone anywhere where the customers can see you, you're good. Don't care if you quit school at 16 if you can still mop floor. Don't care if you've been to prison because you killed some guy, as long as you're not doing that here. Don't care if you deal drugs on your free time as long as you don't bring your business to your day job. This place is exclusively for pizza business.
Have an item on the menu called "random pizza" - and if you order that one, they'll just throw in a mix of whatever ingredients we've got too much of, like if the bell peppers gotta be used before they go bad, every single random pizza is going to have them until they're either gone or need to get tossed. If you've got dietary restrictions or allergies, you gotta specify that while ordering, because other than that, random pizza is just whatever ingredients we need to get rid of. Surplus ingredients du jour.
Building a reputation as a place that's somehow simultaneously sketchy as hell but also remarkably high quality, getting five star restaurant customer service from a waiter with blue hair and stick-n-poke tattoos, there's a homeless guy at the back of the kitchen eating an order that nobody picked up, every surface is spotless and no matter how important of a suit-and-tie you are, if you won't behave yourself the owner will personally physically fight you.

Hiyaaaa!!! I’m on like some search for Atticus finch fics bc they are so rare and i am HUNGRY for some.
May i request an Atticus x baker + babysitter reader? Like his kids have been visiting this little bakery in town and Atticus decides to swing by to see if his kids ran off down there and meets reader?
I'm so full of love I could barely eat.
Tumblr media
Atticus Finch x Gender neutral! Baker! Reader Summary: basic romantic headcanons of Atticus falling for baker! Reader Warnings: mention of violence (not put in detail, just the actions Mr. Ewell does after the trial) Word count: 1.2k A/N: I made the reader a baker only since it felt more in line with your request. And you're so real for searching for fics. ˚ʚ♡ɞ˚
Love isn’t a common thing for Atticus to pay attention to, especially since he’s so busy and a bit older. He’s got kids and their friends, work, and making sure everyone in his home is happy. There’s so much going on romantic love barely seeps in. It also was because he didn’t know how his kids would react to getting another partner, Jem didn’t need to think he moved on too fast from his mother or Scout persecuting the person he could have possibly brought home.
Every couple days he would walk home when he saw Scout and Jem running and begging him to take them to a bakery in town. It was quite odd that they would willingly go into stores without having reason. They always groaned when he brought them shopping, so it must have been a big deal for them to beg to go somewhere. He never took them on his own time since he saw it as no big deal, wanted to go home, and knew the prices were a bit high for the time.
It was one day that Calpurnia had stopped in his office to tell him she couldn’t find the kids and neither could Alexandra. He assured her that he would find them and told her to go back home, still shaken from not finding them. After work, he went around Maycomb searching for the kids before he stopped at the town’s bakery. He hadn’t been in it many times since the recession, and he didn’t feel the need to go into a store just for one thing.
When Atticus finally found Jem, Scout, and Dill, they were sitting at one of the tables, eating away at pieces of blueberry bread. He would go off on them the best he could and ask them how they got the money to even afford getting food from the place. Naturally, you would say you fed them since they asked so nicely.
Just the sight of you would cause him to hesitate to speak again. You’d go on about how sweet they were and how you gave them the food since the bakery couldn’t sell it but it was good enough to eat. Atticus would smile a little wider than Scout and Jem have seen in a long while, thanking you for not charging them. He’d get the two to leave, grabbing the bread and leaving with a small smile.
“Why are you smiling so much?” Scout would ask as they walked home, holding the bread in her hands. Atticus would shake off the question.
“I can’t smile?” He’d remark, patting her head softly as they continued down the road.
It would become more common for Atticus to go to the bakery after work, just going off to talk to you. Each day that Scout and Jem would wait for Atticus, they would look at the corner, waiting for him. And he comes from the other end of the road. Sometimes he would wait until he’s close enough to pipe up, giving them a spook sometimes.
Once the summer comes, they would try finding why he comes from a different area after work and would watch as he walks from the bakery. He’d be questioned an insane amount, specifically from Scout. Atticus would brush them off the best he could, telling them he was talking to a friend.
The romance would be gradual, he would come in to find Jem and Scout to get them home, jokingly telling you off for feeding them pastries before dinner. Of course, it wouldn't be the best joke since he isn’t very good with satire. Either way, he’d thank you for not charging them for the food and be off… even if he wanted to stay longer.
Atticus would stop by more often, simply talking to you about business, the normal old people talk. He would try keeping it casual enough to not make you uncomfortable since he isn’t too good with flirting, so even if he tried it would come off as awkward. Scout said it herself; the kind of humor Atticus tries to have can only truly be done well by a lady Finch.
You would naturally give Atticus the test pastries for him and his kids to try. You’d give him the job of tester since he’d come by so often.
It was most obvious to Jem and Scout as time goes on, they both knew it was because of you. Atticus’s gaze would linger on you, and he would hesitate to say they needed to leave.
One night when the bakery had closed, Atticus stayed back with you to make sure you could close the shop safely (at least that was his reasoning for it). He’d sit at the counter and watch you quietly go on about your day, the new pastries sold, and how things were doing back at your home.
When you had fully closed the shop, he would stop before you could turn away to go home and finally work up the nerve to ask you out. Even if Atticus had more experiences in life than he would prefer bragging about, he still falters with asking a woman out.
“I would like to take you out this Saturday…,” Atticus would draw on his sentence, smiling slightly, his hat held on his chest, close to his heart. Though he held the top of his hat, he could feel his fast heartbeat. “If you’re alright with the idea.”
Naturally, you would accept, and he would go home with a small smile, knowing that he could take you out. Atticus would bring you a plan to bring you to a nice restaurant, get his best clothes for the date, and get Aunt Alexandra to take care of Jem and Scout. Atticus could only hope they didn’t press him too hard on what was going on.
The date would go well, the food being nice and the conversations being the same. As calm as Atticus made himself out to be, his heart was pounding. He almost forgot how nerve wracking it is taking someone out. He would try his best being smooth about how he feels to the best he could, buttering you up but not enough to come off too strong.
Hiding how the relationship from the children wouldn’t be that prominent after several dates. Atticus never hides anything else from them, how he feels about you is theirs to know about since you would be around more often. Of course, they knew to an extent. Jem would just say he knows, and Scout would ask if he was too old to do something like that.
The relationship would stay nearly exclusive to the family, more so since he didn’t want word getting out and possibly getting someone on you for being associated with him. Though, Atticus is beyond loving to you. He’d still stop by the bakery to talk to you when you were free.
After the trial and with the rampage Mr. Ewell was having on anyone associated with it, he’d target you too. It would lead to Atticus trying to escort you more often from work and home. If Mr. Ewell continued his mistreatment of you, Atticus would suggest you move in with him. It would not only be for your protection but also because he wants you to finally live with him. He’s old, he won’t live forever, and he’d prefer living with you in his arms at night.

To anyone who makes a fuss about the prices artists and crafters set for their work:
When I was still making and selling jewelry, I attended and sold my work at conventions. There was a sign on my table that stated "anyone who tells me to lower my prices will pay an extra 10% with each complaint."
You complain about not being paid enough by your employer. Rather than demanding a wage increase from your employer, you tell artists and crafters to lower their prices instead. You're siding with your employer's business model in all but name.
If a business cannot afford to pay it's staff/employees a liveable wage, they are a failed business.
Artists and crafters are independent business owners. Charging the federal minimum wage helps no one. In fact, it increases the chances of burning out. It also increases the risk of injury because now we must make more things, accept more commissions, and finish them quickly in order to make enough money to pay rent/mortgage, utilities, food, transportation/fuel, medical care, etc.
Because we're not making enough money, we need a job other than our own work. This limits our time and energy. Again, it leads to injury and burnout.
How does this help you? How does this help us?
It doesn't.
If you believe you could do the things we do, then learn how and make the things you want. It also means you will need to do a considerable amount of shopping to acquire the things you need. Then you need time to learn. Plan on spending years learning how to make quilts that meet the standards you demand? How about years spent learning how to make realistic portraits or cityscapes?
Save your money for the thing you want to commission. Talk to the crafters about thing you want from their shop. Many artists and crafters share a policy of accepting 50% upfront and the other 50% when the thing is finished. For shop listings, 50% upfront and weekly or monthly payments afterward. You will likely be required to sign a contract regarding this as well, especially from those of us who have a strict "no refund" policy.
Stop telling us to lower our prices. Unionize and demand your employer raise their wages.

More AU lore, who cheered?
We already know a bit about Casper's childhood thanks to Charlie, but I wanted to add a bit more spice to it, as well as what happened after Casper moved!
(quick note: I've seen people color-code names so I'm gonna try and do that, though I don't know if specific characters have specific shades, so bear with me here! :])
First off, Cas' parents weren't the best. They were very absent, preferring to spend their time and money on alcohol and drugs instead of on their child. This is why Cas spends so much time with Charlie, he was the only thing they had.
Then, Casper's dad lost his job, and they had to move back in with Casper's grandparents who lived hours away. That last week with Charlie was horrible, knowing that they had to leave the person that they held closest to their heart, the person who they loved, all because their stupid dad couldn't hold a job.
They didn't stay at their grandparents long. Or rather, Cas didn't stay there long. They got a job in the new town, and saved money till they had enough to get an apartment. It was old and broken down, but it was better than the crampt, smoke-filled house they were forced to move to.
Life was hard for a while, Cas had to get a second job in a shady area. It was scary, but to Cas it was worth it. Everything came to a head, thought, when they were jumped one night.
They were just heading home from their second job, when a group of thugs jumped them for their wallet. It was the scariest moment of Casper's life up till then, they didn't know if they would stop at their wallet, if they would hurt them.
Then, they heard some shouting from the distance, and before they knew it, the thugs that had jumped them were gone.
And in their place stood someone else. A well dressed man who helped them up from the ground and made sure they had their wallet and everything. This was strange to Casper, as no one has shown them real kindness in a long time.
The new stranger offered for him to walk Casper home, and Cas agreed.
While they walked, Casper got to know the stranger a bit. His job was to gather intel for his boss (thought he never said who) and that he was walking back from another mission when he saw Casper in distress. The stranger felt bad for them, so he decided to help.
It was nice talking to the new stranger. When they got to his apartment, the new friend surprised them once more.
"Is this your place?" He said, surprised by how run-down the building was.
"Yeah," Casper sighed, "it's not great, but it's the best I can afford"
"Best you can afford? Do you not have a good job?" The man turned to look at Cas.
"No, I work at the convenience store down the street and the food counter in the bowling alley down town" Casper looked down at the ground as they kicked a rock "they don't pay much, but it's all I can get for now."
"Really?" The stranger looked in shock before they began to think a bit. "What are you good at?"
"Huh?" Cas looked back up.
"What are you good at? Can you fight? Are you really smart with numbers? Can you talk to people well?" He listed a few things out.
"Well, I was really interested in computers when I was in High School. I hacked the school Chromebooks so I could do whatever I wanted on them" Casper smiled at the memory, it was one of their greatest achievements in school.
"Well then," Casper's new friend smiled "how would you like a job as a hacker and intel agent? You seem like you'll do perfectly"
"Wait, really?" Casper stood in shock, had this stranger really offered him a job? As a hacker no less?
"Yeah, it pays really well. Thought, there are a few details that might make you rethink it-" the man began but was cut off by Casper.
"Yes! Yes! Oh my gosh yes!" Casper jumped, smiling wide "I know you're probably in some shady business, but I don't care if I have to hack some rich guys computer or whatever, I'll do it!"
The man just smiled at Casper and laughed. "Well then, I'll come get you tomorrow to meet the boss then."
Casper just smiled as they watched their new friend walk away. "oh, by the way" Casper called out, "what's your name?"
The man turned and smiled once more. "Rook" is all he said "can't wait to start working with you, Casper"

Gonna share the bit of writting i did for this piece, Vesta's going through a hard time in her life.
Story resume: Tells the experience of Vesta with her father and trainer the couple days before the show, they have been in a bit of a fight since she compited in Plastic Fantastic, as he believes it was a way to ridicule him, since he couldn't afford to support her in the trip and she had to take odd jobs at the barn to afford to pay with her stay with the rest of the team that traveled, but she's been trying to make amends. Finally after much begging, Rickey accepts to oversee her training and see her reprise the day before traveling for the show with her. It goes poorly, as Vesta's confidence has been plumbeting for a while and Rickey takes it on his own hands to "help" her gain control again.
Trigger warnings: unhealthy and toxic family dynamics, toxic dependency, manipulation and gaslighting within the family unit.
Story:
Chill early morning in the barn, the sun slowly rising above the treeline warming their faces ever so slightly with that warmth that told you spring was just around the corner… it would have been a comforting sight for Vesta any other day but today.
Her hands were trembling and her heart beating hard in her chest as she put her boots on, struggled with the zipper, then the other boot. Spurs on, the long rounded ones like her father liked even though she rarely rode Babylon in spurs anymore.
She took a deep breath. This is what she wanted, right? Her father had been… ignoring her, doing the bare minimum for her since she came back from Greece. He wouldn’t talk to her, he wouldn’t train with her, she kept trying to make conversation, but lately things had been going quite poorly with Babylon, she felt overwhelmed and overhorsed and couldn’t keep up with the mare’s physic.
“So… are you coming to watch me this weekend?” Vesta asked over dinner last night.
She was sitting across the table from Rickey, poking at her food with her fork. Something elaborate, some sort of white fish with shellfish and shrimps, potatoes and a very tasty wine based sauce, but she wasn’t feeling hungry at all.
Rickey looked up at her, squinting like she had just tried to insult him.
“Of course I’m going, who else is going to watch you?” He asked in a tone that wasn’t even remotely comforting. It was accusatory.
“Nobody,” Vesta mumbled, keeping her eyes down. “But I thought you wouldn’t-”
“Well think fucking again, Vesta. You’re not gonna make me feel like a bad father about it.” He started to raise his voice slightly, Vesta shrinked in her chair. “You keep trying to make me into the bad guy, you're such a brat, so entitled. I can’t even believe you’d think I wouldn’t- God, Vesta. I’m your father.” “It’s just because you, you, you didn’t want to assist when I was practicing I thought- I, that’s- I’m sorry” Vesta started, babbling out her words in an attempt to defend herself that was met by Rickey’s fist shaking the table.
And a few seconds of silence afterwards.
“I’ve been busy, Vesta” He started again, in that accusatory tone. “Working with actual riders that are going to get somewhere, providing for you so you can keep trying to make something out of that stupid mare of yours” Vesta almost felt the need to protest again but he raised a finger at her to keep her quiet. “I don’t even want to talk to you right now. Tomorrow morning I’ll see your practice. It better be good” Then he proceeded to put away both his and Vesta’s plate, grumbling about how he wasn’t even hungry anymore, and went back to his room to sleep for the night. Vesta felt sick for a moment, stood there frozen in place, her hands shaking on top of the wooden table as she tried to calm down but she kept feeling her throat closing on her, her chest getting tighter and no amount of deep breaths was enough to get air in her lungs.
This is what she wanted, right? He was going to come see her train.
This is what she wanted. She wanted this. It was her chance to prove to him she was able to. To do things. It was her chance.
Right, right? Then why did it feel so world ending? What was wrong with her? She took at least another hour before she could snap herself out of it and go to bed, and even then, she kept waking up, rolling over, thinking, trying to prepare herself for the session next morning. Before she even realized, her father’s alarm was going off in his room. She felt sick all of a sudden, and looked at the time, it was 5 am.
She jumped out of her bed, got in the shower. He got out of his room and made breakfast. She got out of the shower, dressed, and had breakfast while he showered. And they were off to the barn. Arrived there a couple minutes before 6.
Nobody else was there yet, lessons started at 8.
Her father liked it this way better. Less distractions. Less witnesses. It had always been like that with him, since Vesta was little. Lessons with him were either late, after everybody else was gone or early in the morning before anybody else arrived.
They walked in silence to the stables, got Babylon out, the mare was confused as to why they were there so early, but still willing to follow the girl around. She stood to get tacked up with no problem. Her usual saddle, girth, breast collar. Then the bridle.
“What’s that bit you’re using?” Rickey asked.
“Uhm-” Vesta hesitated. “A double joint it’s- it’s what I’ve been using for jumping, she likes it” Her voice was barely a thread, barely audible as she explained herself.
“Hm.” He made a face at it. “Who gave it to you, why do you- You can’t be changing her tack up just because you feel like it Vesta, it all has a reason- It’s not- A bit is not something you can change just for looks.” He started, sounding tired and quite bothered by it. “We’ll see how it goes but I think you’d need more leverage on her.” He kept going. “No wonder why she’s been running off with you.”
He kept making those smart remarks, making the teen girl feel like she was nothing, dirt on his boot at best. She threw the reins over the neck, put the bridle on without saying another word. Then he decided he was gonna warm her up on the lunge line, see how she was fencing in that bit, because he wasn’t sure. All while Vesta got ready to ride.
She walked to the car, got all her equipment on, the airbag vest, the helmet, boots, spurs. It took her maybe 3 minutes. Then she sat there for another 10 minutes trying to psych herself to get done with it.
She hated lessons with her father. When he was in a bad mood she dreaded them like nothing else. But her best lessons and the ones that she had learned the most of- those were also with him. She was convinced it was her problem, it was her issue, she wasn’t good enough, she wasn’t working hard enough- He talked about it all the time, how kids these days don’t know how to put in the work to be great.
Maybe it was just that, maybe she just wasn’t great, yet she refused to quit.
She just wanted to get on his good side again, she wanted him to talk to her and help her. She couldn’t do it alone, clearly. Her relationship with Babylon was in shambles, and she was growing scared of the mare lately.
This was going to help.
It was.
It’ll help.
She was convinced of it, right? Then why were her hands shaking?
She forced herself to walk towards the arena, her fingertips were feeling numb. She felt lightheaded as her heart picked up speed in her chest.
Breath.
Slowly, breath in. Breath out.
This is going to help.
She watched her father lunge Babylon for a couple more minutes from the edge of the arena. The mare was all fire, and Rickey had always been particularly hard with her. It almost seemed as if he was purposely messing with her so she would give him an excuse to justify his harsh treatment.
He used a whip to chase her around, and didn't give her space to think. Changed directions harshly, she would move out out of fear trying to get away from the pressure. At points, Vesta could see Babylon trying to face Rickey, her nostrils flared, drenched in sweat already. Rickey took it as an attempt to strike at him and made her move out again. ‘Can’t let her even think about it’ he would say.
At some point, she tried to kick out at the whip that he was constantly tapping her legs with, to which Rickey responded by swinging the whip even harder, making a sound even when it made contact with her hind quarters. The mare whined and galloped out of control again.
Vesta cringed internally. But remained quiet, her hands clenched into fists to try and hide the trembling of her hands. “I- I thought you were just going to warm her up” She mumbled, after Rickey made Babylon stop once again.
The mare’s neck was twisted to the inside of the circle in such a violent pull, that she stopped immediately, facing Rickey. She tried to back up a couple steps but was met with the end of the line that the man was holding tightly. And she didn’t fight it. Just stood there in a state of shock, breathing heavily.
“She’s drenched in sweat already.” Vesta went to touch her mare’s neck. Big drops of sweat were running down her fur.
“Well she wouldn’t be if she stopped playing games with me. Get on, we’re gonna start in the line” He gestured at his daughter to get in the saddle, then pulled his hair back with his hand, slightly out of breath as well but with a slight grin showing on his face.
“It’s been a while since I’ve seen you ride so let’s see how those transitions are going, I wanna see how you ask her.” He explained, putting on his professional talk voice.
They did that for a few minutes, walk, collect, stop, backup, then go forward into a passage.
Then they removed the long line so she could practice that passage along the long wall of the arena. He didn’t like it, it was correct, Babylon was always very correct and very precise with her moves but she wasn’t flashy. She didn’t pick her feet as high as he wanted.
“Hold her, close your fingers. Harder, tuck her head” He kept saying. Babylon was fighting at the bit, opening her mouth to escape the pressure of it by this point.
Vesta was trying to be gentle with her leg, aware of her spurs but Rickey apparently didn’t think she was doing enough, instructing her to put her leg stronger on her. “You’re not going to hurt her, she’s a huge animal, they fight all the time amongst themselves, don’t be a baby” were some of his favourite excuses to make.
Vesta tried to press her more with the spur, but at some point Babylon had enough and stopped, throwing her head up and hoofing at the ground, confused and threatening to rear.
“I said MORE leg are you even LISTENING to me Vesta?” Rickey roared at her. “Why am I even here if you’re going to ignore the instructions I give you?”
"I- I did!" Vesta talked back. "I was putting my leg!"
"Well CLEARLY not enough! Keep going! Again!" He yelled back, coming at her with the whip, he stroke at the mare's hind quarters in frustration.
Babylon whined, immediately shooting off in an out of control gallop. The reins slipped a significant amount from Vesta's hands.
"Well now she has energy!" He mocked them. "Now give her some calm, grab the reins. Come on. Stop."
Vesta tried so hard to stop, her face was burning in embarrassment and shame, and her eyes welling up with tears. It took Babylon a whole lap to the arena to be able to stop and by then both her and Vesta were shaking. The girl caressed the neck and quietly apologized, hoping for a moment that allowed them both to catch their breath, but it didn't happen.
She saw by the corner of her eye her father start to walk towards them, and immediately tears started to run down her face. Her breathing became so worked up, like no matter how deep she tried to breathe in, it was never enough air.
She tried to wipe her tears away so fast, so violently with the sleeve of her shirt, but she was gasping for air between contained sobs and it wouldn't stop.
He walked by them, took one look at her and the absolute look of disappointment in his face sent Vesta into a full blown panic attack, unable to make excuses for herself, trying to apologize. Beg for his forgiveness, even.
He stood there quietly and then sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. Mumbled something about how he couldn't believe she would cry for that, Vesta was listening to him like her head was under water.
"She didn't even do anything, just ran for a bit" He started. "You used to be more brave, god, Vesta, if you wanna quit just say so."
Vesta couldn't respond.
"Stop already" He demanded, waiting for her to stop crying but it didn't happen. "Alright, get off." Once again, he demanded. When Vesta didn't move, he proceeded to unclip her airbag himself, and force her down grabbing her by the arm. "If you're gonna be a fucking baby about it then you can sit over there 'n calm down, alright?" He guided Vesta -or more like almost dragged her, grabbing her by the arm with one hand, and holding the reins with the other- to sit on a chair in a corner of the arena.
"Just sit there, breath, ok, nothing happened. She just bolted a little. It wasn't that scary. Calm down, you're making me look bad." His tone was condescending at best, but to Vesta it sounded caring, at least a little.
He looked at the horse, then at his phone, checking the hour. Then back at his daughter, who couldn't stop crying and violently shaking, holding her arm like he had broken it or something even though he just... literally just held her, she was being soooo dramatic. Rolled his eyes.
"Fine, just stay here." He ended up getting on Babylon himself, the mare seemed to feel his energy and started to back up immediately as he picked up the reins.
And he was fast to 'correct' her as well, using the whip to strike her not once, but twice, and even three times. "That's not what I asked now, was it?" He mocked her, a grin starting to draw on his face as the mare tried to bolt again in retaliation. He pulled the reins so hard and harsh that Babylon stopped in a very dramatic way, almost sitting her hind quarters on the ground.
The mare seemed in shock for a second. Not sure of how to respond. Frozen in place. Then is when Rickey rewarded her with a single pat on the neck, then asked for collection. Then more collection. Babylon started to backup again, but Rickey kicked her ribs and this time that was enough to stop her from keep walking backwards. She loaded her whole bodyweight in her back legs, almost as if she was going to rear but couldn't bring herself to. She was exhausted, sweating to the point whole drops of sweat were dropping from her belly. Rickey made her go forward again, wanting to get a nice passage off of her. To try and ‘finish on a good note’.
But kept asking for more and more collection on the bit, to the point her chin was touching her chest. Every step, he used the whip to ask for more movement of her legs.
He made the mare work for another 15 minutes before he allowed her to rest and stretch her neck. She immediately let her head down. Vesta didn't stop crying for one second during that time but she tried to hold herself together when her father walked with Babylon in front of the chair she was sitting at.
A car had just entered the parking lot, and Rickey had eyes on it like a hawk.
It was the showjumping teacher, Natsuo Hawthorn, Vesta had a lesson with him in a few minutes. His face twitched a second, but he ended up getting down next to Vesta and handing her the reins.
"Up, walk her" He said, plainly. "Gonna tell your teacher you're not feeling well, alright. We'll go home as soon as Babylon's cooled down." He softly caressed Vesta's hair, but didn't even look at her before he walked off to talk to the other trainer.
It was a brief talk, Vesta didn't move for a couple of minutes, just sitting in a state of shell shock before the sound of her father's footsteps walking back to the arena kicked her into action again, jumped in the saddle and walked around for a bit, she tried to apologize to Babylon, let her know it was ok, but it wasn't. She felt like a liar. But they needed to do this.
So he would accept them again.
But she hated to see her mare like that. Every time, without a fault, it broke something in her.
After she considered that Babylon was cooled off enough, she got down and immediately ran out of the arena, showered the sweat off the mare and put her in a paddock, and then they were back in the car, going home.
"I don't know if you're ready to show this weekend, Vesta. I mean, I'll take you to it but I don't know" He started after several minutes of silence. "Seems like a waste of money."
"No! It, it was just a bad morning. I didn't sleep well." Vesta assured him, in a slight panic. "I'm- It's- It's also too late to drop it, I already, I mean, I paid the inscription already." She lied.
Her heart was beating fast and hard in her chest.
She needed to show, it was her- her redemption. She needed it.
He would never come to see her to any other show if she started to drop out of shows for no reason. He might not even let her keep Babylon.
There was too much at stake.
He made a face. "Vesta..."
"Just- please." She begged.
"I don't know... That mare isn't ready, I don't even know how she didn't kill you in Greece" He started. "It's dangerous, and you can't control her, I mean, look at what happened you couldn't even stop her."
"She's better when we're at shows, its- I swear it's like she relaxes or something, she’s more focused, it'll be fine it was just- I wasn't- Please dad" Vesta spoke fast, feeling like she was going to start crying again but trying not to.
"God- alright, I'm just trying to look out for you, calm down." Rickey rolled his eyes. "Fine, but you have to do it without crying or I won't take you to any more shows."
-----
Vesta barely slept any that night, she kept rolling over, waking up. Trying to go back to sleep. And before she could even rest some the alarm on her father’s phone was going off. She quickly got up and got in the shower. While she was in the shower, her father got up, made breakfast, she got out of the shower. Got dressed, ate breakfast while he showered, and they were off.
Babylon seemed just as tired and shell shocked as Vesta was, loaded in the trailer like a machine, not a thought between her ears. Vesta made sure to fill her haynet a little more as a way to ask for her forgiveness. Babylon didn't touch the hay.
They arrived at the venue without exchanging a single word, Vesta just looking out of the window and listening to music in her headphones. Trying to get herself in the zone to go into the arena without having a panic attack but the closer they were the harder it was to feel confident.
“Do you think we can do it” She asked with a thread of voice once her dad had parked in the parking lot.
“Not with that attitude. If you’re gonna start acting like this before even putting a foot in the arena, Vesta, then maybe this sport isn’t for you. I’m serious.” He leaned in his seat. “You need to be able to handle a little heat.”
“She was- she was doing pretty good with the reprise all week till yesterday, I-” Vesta started, but her father interrupted her.
“Oh there we go again. Blaming me.” Rickey rolled his eyes with a hand gesture in the air, exasperated.
“No, I just- I don’t understand.” “You don’t have to, Vesta, this- For fucks shake, this sport isn’t even hard you compete on white breeches, clearly none of these assholes put any work on their horses themselves, they have a trainer at home that does all the work, then they get on and look good, that’s all there is to it. You don’t need to understand shit. You just need to do what I tell you to.” He ranted, gesturing in the air to emphasize his words.
Vesta shut her mouth, staring at her phone.
“Yesterday I didn’t see a winning horse, I saw a foal that had never been told no, I saw a bratty mare that wanted to get away with shit you can’t get away in the ring.” He said, the girl shrinked in her seat. “But we’re gonna fix it, alright, you just finish the reprise, do it and we’ll work on it next week.” He offered.
A crumb.
A peace offering.
Vesta glanced at him.
“Go on, go get ready” He reached with his arm across her to open her door. Vesta did.
Got out of their car and went straight to get Babylon out of the trailer, and settled in the venue’s stables for the weekend. The mare had sweated a little bit on the trip, and Vesta noticed she hadn’t touched her hay. But it was…
Probably nothing. She washed some of the sweat off the mare with some shavings as they got to the stables, Baby leaned into her touch.
“How are you feeling, girl” She asked softly, her father must be grabbing coffee in the cafeteria, so she took that moment to have a one on one with her mare. “You’re gonna try for me, right? Just this time” She mumbled, Babylon leaned her forehead on the girl's body, and Vesta scratched the back of her ears aimlessly. “Just this time, and then everything will get better, I promise.” She continued. “But you have to try for me, just this one time. I can’t do it without you.”
They stood there for a bit, Babylon with her head leaning on the girl, Vesta caressing her softly. Then Babylon violently pulled her head up and pinned her ears, as soon as she noticed Rickey approaching with two cups, one of coffee, black and simple for him, and one of chocolate milk for Vesta.
“Here, a treat, now relax.” He said as he offered his daughter the cup. “It 's hot.” Vesta sighed, glancing at Babylon, that was keeping herself at the further away corner of the stable now, with her ears pinned and her head down. She took a sip, and looked at her dad in surprise.
It had been years since he had gotten her chocolate instead of coffee, like, since she was a kid. It made her smile a little. It did make her feel better.

The Rowntrees Ultimate Decades Challenge - Winter 1374
I'm not feeling as motivated to play and I'm starting college soon, so I'm going to try writing shorter posts from now on. This year will be a story in 4 parts (one each season).
Tumblr media
At the start of 1374, news arrived in the village: the fighting in the war against France had come to an end! A few men who fought came back to the village, but news from Gilbert hadn't arrived yet. The family waited anxiously for Gilbert's return but were not sure when he'd arrive. For the time, Kymmie chose not to say anything to Sabina, to not get her hopes up.
Tumblr media
Since Finnian's injury, the women were left to take care of the garden. Kymmie and Sabina did not have the strength or stamina to work outside for long hours, so a lot of the tasks fell to Edussa. However, having her work in the garden brought down the store, which Kymmie was often too busy to open.
Tumblr media
Edussa loved running the store. She learned simple math from Kymmie when she first married into the family and enjoyed counting up the change and bartering with customers. While gardening, she tried to come up with ideas to make gardening more efficient, so she could return to running the store. Then one day, Edussa came up with a plan she thought was good enough to run by her mother-in-law.
Tumblr media
Kymmie had noticed that Edussa did not enjoy gardening and tried to calm her daughter-in-law.
"I know gardening is boring, but perhaps it would help for you to concentrate on the food and money we will get once the crops are harvested," Kymmie advised. "And you taking care of the garden means Finnian is not stressing about it, and he will heal faster."
Tumblr media
Edussa was not convinced. "Um, yeah," she said distractingly. "Speaking of the garden, um, I had an idea of how we can take care of it without me having to do it. But I'm really not sure it will work."
Kymmie wanted to chuckle at Edussa's nervousness. She went for a joke instead. "What is it, sell me off as hunting bait? Because I think I'm too old to fetch that good of a price."
Tumblr media
Edussa smiled weakly. "So I was thinking, we can't afford to hire a gardener. But... what if we can?"
Kymmie looked on, confused.
"There's going to be a lot of men coming from the war, right?" Edussa spoke quickly. "So, there will be more people, but the same number of jobs. And probably some people who don't have any life to get back to will pass through our village. And all these people will need jobs but won't need to be paid much. If we hire a gardener now, we can pay him half the usual price and still find someone."
Immediately after she said her idea, Edussa wished she hadn't. Kymmie was usually kind to her, but what if she thought Edussa was lazy or ungrateful for not just dealing with the current God-given circumstances?
Tumblr media
But Kymmie beamed at her instead.
"Edussa, sweetie, that's a wonderful idea! You are a very clever young lady to think about the situation like that. You are right. I remember my father telling me that after he came back from the war when he was young, many stragglers showed up on his farm looking for jobs. I will open the shop tomorrow and ask around for someone looking for a job."
Tumblr media
Kymmie wondered how many ideas Edussa had kept quiet about because she feared a negative response.
"Sweetheart, you're a very smart woman," Kymmie told her daughter-in-law. "When you have ideas, even if they end up not working out, you should still tell me about them. It's important to be curious and constantly think about ways to improve your situation."
Tumblr media
After talking to Kymmie, Edussa was ecstatic. Her entire life she thought her purpose was to be a good mother, and she was shocked when her first child didn't bring her the joy she expected. Now Edussa realized her purpose was to be a good mother, just not in the way she thought. She wanted to run the store successfully and come up with tricks to sell more stuff. And one day, by being a successful businesswoman, she would make enough money to guarantee her children didn't have to be serfs. Edussa was grateful that she married into a family where she wasn't just stuck as a farmer's wife.

actually screw it yeah update post time, buckle up cuz life has literally been insane since The Move initially started and we're gonna sorta cliffnotes this shit starting with stuff i have probably already talked about
✩ got a job offer across the country at the beginning of august, accepted, ended up not making it out of state in time to actually start it due to some transport issues
✩ started heading out at the end of september (finally) alongside my parents, shitass car overheated so hard we couldn't go further, parents headed out and we stuck around where we broke down in my parents' rv which was also having trouble
✩ left the rv mid-october to head back to stay with some family back 'home', been here since
✩ got a job while waiting for parents to be able to help at least me get where we were going and get a job so i can get my husband out there too, lasted two weeks before life problems + my shitty mental health made me quit for Actual Straight-Up Safety Reasons
✩ have spent this entire time being pissed off and trying not to be ungrateful for what i've got but it's difficult because MAN does the family who's letting us stay here make me want to commit crimes. love them to bits but we have. vastly different needs and views.
✩ just like. imagine being a grandparent who is constantly like "are you guys eating enough? do you need help?" while making food that you have been informed your grandchild's husband cannot eat for Health Reasons, and then getting upset that your grandchild gets irritated about the fact you're offering them food their husband cannot eat. she's trying but it's just. frustrating.
✩ got the flu for the first time ever and it knocked me on my fucking ass for almost two weeks, still sort of getting over it almost three weeks after the symptoms fully stopped. when i say i literally lost 10 pounds i couldn't afford to lose i am serious. i couldn't eat fucken ANYTHING it was horrible
✩ have a flight booked to get out of state on Feb 10th!! + have job interviews set up already, so things are looking up, busy packing and cleaning up and making sure my husband (and best friend who is staying with us) will manage to survive without me as i am the only one with Real Life Adult Experience out of the group for a lot of reasons
✩ and i think that's it? idk there's been A Lot and i don't feel like getting into it in detail at this point lmao, it'll edge way too close to me venting
✩ anyways i'm still offering commissions!! just now it's more "pay what you want" because i certainly have time to write i just have trouble working on stuff that's For Me at the moment lol

Use this magic wand to drink your fancy coffee at home instead of in traffic.
Tumblr media
It doesn't matter what brand. They are all basically the same with a different alphabet soup of letters on them. A rechargeable holds a charge for over two weeks of daily use and froths up milk like nobody's business.
Hey, would you like to avoid waiting eternally in line for a sip of that sweet elixir to be found only in your pretentious neighborhood Starbucks?
Would you like less of the few dollars you still have control over, after paying out all your hard earned money just to frickin exist as a biological organism with basic needs like food, water, and shelter. And maybe some love, if you're lucky. How much of that money do you want going to companies of morally and ethically questionable views on civil rights, fair trade, abuse and enslavement of indigenous people who grow the coffee, and genocides?
I don't want to give Starbucks corporate my money either. And it's not like they pay their workers enough to benefit the community either.
But I need that sweet elixir and I can't get by on Dunkin.
Well, have I got a life hack for you: Make your own damn coffee and put it in your own damn cup yourself.
Heavy cream is 5 bucks a quart. Heavy cream lasts for 3-6 weeks in some households in an opened cardboard container. It's pure fat and bacteria generally cannot consume fats. Cool fact of the day.
Heavy cream is the elixir of happiness. You can't feel bad while eating a whole bowl of newly whipped cream. Next time you feel down, put an inch of cream in a cup. Add some of your favorite sweeter. Use your magic milk frother wand for a minute or two. Then just spoon it in. Trust me.
Buy the best coffee beans you can afford. You can more than afford 2 week's worth of ethically sourced, super high quality beans, from whatever origin or blend you like, if you just skip 3 Starbucks runs.
Buy a coffee grinder. Fresh ground coffee. There is nothing like it.
Did you know that the newer coffee makers all come standard with timers. Even the dirt cheap ones. You don't even have to get out of bed to make the coffee all cold and fumbly. Just set it up at night and push the timer button before you brush your teeth. Wake up to the smell of that golden cup.
And then, while you enjoy that first sip of coffee neat and black, you take your magic wand and you use it to froth up milk. After you have enjoyed your pure coffee bliss, and pour your foamy milk onto your coffee. Full fat milk. Or half and half. Maybe indulge in cream. I suggest cream.
Frothing the milk is a learned skill. It takes some practice but you'll grasp the idea.
You can vary the froth by how long you froth the milk or cream. If you froth cream you will immediately get whipped cream and I highly suggest that.
Better, easier, more inexpensive, ethical morning coffee. In your own way. Thanks to today's technological wizardry!
Here's the better part. Instead of gulping down Starbucks in traffic, use your own darn coffee to help you center yourself for the day.
We can all find an extra 15 minutes in our morning to just sit down and drink your coffee before you face this day. (Hell, you probably have to budget at least 15 minutes to spend in line for your coffee every day already. Take it back.)
Find yourself in the moment, drink your coffee, contemplate a bird or a beetle or a cloud. Something of this cosmos. Drink your coffee and focus on something of this living cosmos. Not to become one with it or anything like that. Just to focus on something real that is alive and feel the kinship. It has a wonderful effect of resetting our view of ourselves into a more positive one. Sip your own darn coffee in comfort.
Then enrich your soul with 5 minutes of poetry, scripture, or philosophy. Sip your coffee as you ponder its meaning and significance.
Ready yourself to face your day. Do not review your to do list. Just prepare yourself to roll out. As you sip your coffee.
It can be the silliest dumbest mug in the world. It can be a crumbling creation from a 5yo or a more aesthetically pleasing form. Now fill it with a gourmet whatever the frick you want for 50 cents a day. Heck yeah. Every morning coffee is a uniquely you experience.
Build a better morning coffee ritual than gulping it down like a drug while cursing at other drivers. We can evolve as a society and join the rest of the civilized world.
Make your own darn coffee. Have a morning coffee ritual. It's a human right. Make a better morning coffee ritual for yourself. Be creative. Be yourself. Drink your own darn good coffee. Your way.

I hate tipping culture. I think it's disgusting how business owners can get away with paying employees below minimum wage just to thrust the responsibility of paying my wages onto the customer who's already paying exorbitant prices for food.
It's hard sometimes. I catch myself getting mad at customers who don't tip. It's frustrating driving through rush hour traffic to hand deliver someone their food only to get stiffed on a tip. I have to remind myself that it's my boss who's perpetuating the tipping culture. 60% of my wages come from gratuities so having days where I don't make a lot of tips really does hurt. I wish it wasn't like this but if you're able to spare a couple of bucks laying around, it's so much better than nothing. I don't want to sound like I'm entitled to your money because I'm not. We're all hard up so I understand that it's hard enough just to afford food let alone a tip. I will never be angry with someone who can't afford a tip, unless you're standing in a McMansion in the hills. In that case, you can open up the McScrooge vault and get me a $5 for God's sake.

How to Ship a Parcel to the USA: A Step-by-Step Guide
Tumblr media
Shipping a parcel to the USA can seem daunting, but with the right guidance and planning, it can be a straightforward process. Whether you're sending a gift, important documents, or merchandise for your business, understanding the logistics and requirements for sending a parcel to the USA will make the entire experience smoother and stress-free.
Step 1: Choose the Right Shipping Service
The first step in sending a parcel to the USA is selecting the right courier or shipping company. You need a service that offers reliability, affordable pricing, and fast delivery. While there are many options available, Parcel Flight is a trusted provider that ensures your parcel is handled with care, delivering it to the USA efficiently.
Consider whether you need standard or expedited shipping. For urgent shipments, you may opt for express delivery, while standard services are more economical for non-urgent parcels. Make sure to check the specific delivery times and costs associated with each service.
Step 2: Pack Your Parcel Properly
Proper packing is essential when sending a parcel to the USA. Choose a sturdy box or envelope that can handle the weight and size of your items. You should use enough padding to prevent damage during transit, particularly if your parcel contains fragile items. Securely seal your package with strong tape to avoid any accidental openings during shipping.
Step 3: Fill Out the Required Documentation
When shipping internationally, there are certain forms you need to complete. A customs declaration is required when sending a parcel to the USA, as it provides the recipient's country with information about the contents and value of the shipment. This helps customs officials assess any applicable duties or taxes. Make sure to provide accurate details about your parcel, as incorrect or incomplete forms could result in delays.
Step 4: Pay for Shipping and Track Your Parcel
Once your parcel is packed and documentation is filled out, the next step is to pay for the shipping. Most courier services offer various payment options, including online payments. After payment, you’ll receive a tracking number, which allows you to monitor your parcel’s journey until it reaches the USA.
Step 5: Know the Import Regulations
Before shipping a parcel to the USA, it's important to familiarize yourself with the country’s import regulations. The USA has strict rules about prohibited items, such as certain food items, plants, and restricted goods. Check the regulations to ensure your parcel complies with the laws to avoid delays or confiscation.
Conclusion
Shipping a parcel to the USA doesn’t have to be complicated. By following these simple steps and using reliable shipping services like Parcel Flight, you can ensure your package arrives safely and on time. Remember to pack carefully, fill out the necessary paperwork, and understand the import restrictions to guarantee a smooth experience.

a couple of things. One: this knight was born sword-first and there's something poetically perfect about that.
two: while i really really don't think every skill hobby and interest should be monetized, i think this is a useful opportunity to talk about pricing your arts and crafts if you are selling them.
It says this took 41 hours. That's handy, that means we can basically do a one-to-one comparison to a week of work. i'm not educated in papercraft or the origami sculpture market, but let's assume this person is an expert in the field.
So, in my area, minimum wage is $16, but most of us agree that a living wage is much higher. I make $23 an hour and can't afford an apartment. So let's say a reasonable wage is $30 an hour. That means after taxes, you could afford an average one bedroom apartment, good food, and if you are careful and no costly emergencies befall you, you could probably even take a week long vacation once a year. That's not greedy, that's reasonable. Actually that's kind of sad because of how hard it is to achieve such a low bar, and it doesn't even get into saving for retirement, but we're not getting into that on this post.
So at $30 an hour as your established reasonable income (honestly i'm lowballing a bit, an expert in their field probably deserves better than an average 1 bed apartment, but for the sake of this exercise...) for 40 hours of labor you're talking $1,200 for this crafted object. AS A STARTING POINT.
Because, say you're a business. Say your business makes stamped metal figurines. You have to pay for the metal, you have to pay for the time it takes someone to operate the machine, and you have to pay for the machine that stamps out the figurines.
Say you get a loan to purchase the machine. So what you do is, to every stamped metal item you sell, you add some money to the selling price that goes toward repaying the loan. Even if you don't get a loan, you need to pay yourself back the money you spent on the machine.
In this case, this person didn't buy a machine. What they did instead was spend probably at least a thousand hours practicing their craft. Probably also at least a thousand dollars on paper. The important thing is, this artist deserves to be paid for their time and materials perfecting their craft the same way a business has to pay off their machine.
SO. In my opinion, that makes this paper sculpture worth at least $1,500 or possibly as much as $2k.
Now when this person was starting out, let's say they made an impressive tiger. And let's say it was their first attempt at this kind of tiger sculpture, and is less detailed and the quality isn't as good, and it took them the same 40 hours. But now that they are good enough to do this knight, they could have made that same tiger in 20 hours and the quality would be better.
At that point in their career, they wouldn't necessarily be trying to get their learning hours paid for because they are still pretty deep in their learning curve (you never stop learning, but there is a point where you are only learning expert level stuff and we're saying this tiger was made before that point was reached). The time was 40 hours but it could have been made by an expert in 20 hours, and the quality would have been better.
So at that point, maybe you say "i still deserve minimum wage" which is true and for all 40 hours would be $640 plus maybe it took you 3 tries and therefore 3 large sheets of origami paper at like, idk, 35 bucks each, so of course you're going to include your cost of materials to make about $740.
Now you look at the market you have access to (that's how much comparable items are actually selling for) and you stay honest about the quality of your piece, and you decide you'll actually be able to sell your origami tiger sculpture for about $375 (which i just did a quick shopping search for hand-made origami sculptures and that seems like a competitive price point for what i'm picturing)
So you take the remaining $265 of your labor costs, and you call 17 hours of your labor on this tiger Learning Hours, and that's what you're making up for when you charge $2k for the knight later. This means you're making minimum wage (for the quality) for 23 hours of labor, which is somewhat reasonable, because a professional / expert could have made it in 20 hours.
At this point it's worth considering making 10 or 20 more of these tigers to sell, because you can probably get the quality up and the time down pretty significantly by making the same tiger several times in a row, and you can keep the price the same or even bump it up a little for the quality increase, and that' probably the quickest way to move you toward getting paid 23 hours worth of labor for 23 hours of work. If you keep making the tigers, the quality gets really good, it takes you much less time to make, and now you're charging like $490 each, and some of that is to make up your learning hours on the first few tigers.
Now, every artist and crafter is going to experience these things differently, and not everyone will agree with every point of logic i've landed on, but this is kind of an outline for how to start thinking about pricing your items.
IF you are trying to enter your arts and crafts as sell-able items in the competitive market for the purposes of making an income from your efforts, that is. Not every hobby needs to be monetized.
But if you are monetizing it, you don't just say "it seeeeeems like i could sell this for $X" you do something like the rough equations i've laid out here, and you align it with your goals and projected progress, and you make decisions like "i'm going to make 30 more of these tigers" or at least "now that i know how to do it, i'm going to make a second tiger and see how long it takes me" with these things in mind so that you can be successful and competitive and earn a fair wage for your items.
Origami knight made from a single piece of paper with not cuts or tears.

The Best Prep Tables for DIY Home Chefs
As a DIY home chef, having the right tools and workspace can make all the difference when preparing meals. One of the most important pieces of equipment in your kitchen is a reliable prep table. Whether you're an amateur cook or a seasoned food enthusiast, a high-quality prep table provides ample workspace, supports efficient food preparation, and can even elevate the style and functionality of your kitchen.
A well-chosen prep table enhances the cooking experience, helping you stay organized, save time, and ensure a smooth workflow when preparing your favorite dishes. However, with so many options on the market, it can be challenging to find the best kitchen prep table that suits your needs. Factors such as price, size, material, and functionality must all be considered to ensure you choose the right one for your DIY cooking adventures.
When it comes to the kitchen prep tables price in United States, the cost can vary depending on the material, design, and features. But it’s essential to balance affordability with quality to get the best value for your money. A prep table should last for years, and the investment will pay off in improved kitchen efficiency and convenience.
In this article, we'll explore some of the best prep tables for DIY home chefs, along with key features to consider when selecting a table that fits your cooking style and space.
1. Material Matters: Stainless Steel for Durability and Hygiene
The material of your kitchen prep table is crucial to its longevity, performance, and cleanliness. Stainless steel is by far the most popular material for prep tables, and for good reason. It offers a durable, non-porous surface that is resistant to stains, rust, and bacteria. Stainless steel also makes cleaning a breeze—just a quick wipe-down with a damp cloth or some mild detergent and your table is good to go.
Why Stainless Steel?
Durability: Stainless steel is extremely strong and can withstand heavy use, which is essential in a busy kitchen.
Hygiene: It’s non-porous, so it won’t harbor bacteria, making it ideal for food preparation.
Easy to Clean: The smooth surface of stainless steel makes it easy to wipe down and sanitize after every use.
If you’re a DIY home chef looking for a long-lasting and easy-to-maintain prep table, stainless steel is an excellent choice. It provides both function and style, with a sleek, modern look that complements any kitchen decor.
2. Size and Work Surface: Finding the Right Fit for Your Kitchen
When selecting a prep table, one of the first things you need to consider is the size of the table and the available space in your kitchen. Having ample workspace is essential for meal preparation, as it gives you enough room to chop, mix, and organize your ingredients without feeling cramped.
What to Consider:
Counter Space: If you have limited counter space, opt for a compact prep table that can fit into a corner or against the wall without taking up too much room. A 24” x 36” or 30” x 48” prep table can be ideal for small kitchens.
Work Surface: Look for a table that provides enough space for the tasks you do most often. If you do a lot of chopping and dicing, a larger work surface, such as a 30” x 72” table, might be more suitable for your needs.
Height: The height of the prep table is also important. Standard prep tables are typically around 34” to 36” high, which suits most people. However, adjustable-height tables can be a great option for those who prefer to stand or sit while working.
Ensuring that the prep table fits comfortably in your kitchen and provides enough surface area for your cooking tasks will make your DIY cooking experience far more enjoyable.
3. Additional Features to Improve Functionality
While the basic function of a prep table is to provide a sturdy surface for food preparation, many modern prep tables come with additional features that enhance their usability and convenience. These added features can help make your prep table even more functional, and can save you time and effort in the kitchen.
Popular Features to Look For:
Storage Options: Many prep tables come with under-shelves or drawers for added storage. If you have limited cabinet space in your kitchen, this can be a huge benefit. Under-shelf storage is perfect for storing bowls, plates, or utensils, while drawers can hold knives, cutting boards, and other kitchen tools.
Built-in Cutting Boards: Some prep tables have a removable cutting board or butcher block insert, making it easy to prep ingredients directly on the table. This is especially useful for tasks like chopping vegetables or carving meat.
Casters: If you need flexibility in your kitchen layout, look for a prep table with lockable wheels or casters. This allows you to move the table around easily, whether you need to create more space or rearrange your kitchen for a new task.
Integrated Sink: For a truly convenient option, some higher-end prep tables come with an integrated sink or faucet. This feature allows you to wash ingredients directly at the table without having to move to a separate sink.
These added features increase the functionality of your prep table and make it more versatile for a variety of tasks, whether you’re chopping, mixing, or even washing ingredients.
4. Design and Aesthetic Appeal
While function is crucial, the design and aesthetics of your prep table are also important, especially for a DIY home chef who enjoys spending time in the kitchen. A well-designed prep table can blend seamlessly into your kitchen’s decor, complementing the overall style of your space.
Things to Consider:
Modern vs. Rustic: Depending on your kitchen’s style, you may want a table that has a sleek, modern appearance (such as a stainless steel table) or something that adds a rustic touch (like a wooden or bamboo prep table).
Finish: The finish of your prep table can affect its look and maintenance. A brushed stainless steel finish, for example, will have a matte look and resist fingerprints, while a polished finish may offer a more polished aesthetic but show smudges more easily.
Compact or Large: Choose whether a compact prep table works for you or if you need a larger table with more surface area. Opting for a table that blends well with your existing kitchen decor will help it feel like an integral part of your workspace.

There's a place near me that's meant to be a sort of area Community Development Project. One of the services it provides is helping people from the local socioeconomically impoverished area with a little financial aid for education, whether this takes the form of helping with materials, or unforeseen expenses like your kids having a growth spurt and needing new shoes mid term. New election. Not only did it get its funding completely cut, it also slashed its staff down to two, those staff deal with disability supports mainly. The council claimed nobody was using the service (not true) so the people of the area obv didnt need any help. (again, untrue) Most people in the area can't imagine going to further education because of the expense// barriers. They don't know about places like I mentioned above, they don't know about the grants that are out there, the scholarships you can get if you work your ass off, the laptop loan schemes within the educational institutions. Even with this help, you're still living hand to mouth, the places in the free creche are snapped up, so childcare needs to be paid for n on their meager funds they can't afford to go. Rather than the council look into why people arent availing of these schemes, (we know the real reason why the council isn't) theyd rather cut the funding entirely n have the ones who are using the schemes on offer to suffer. They cut rental assistance -- you'd get a stipend n you'd pay your landlord yourself with the cash -- in favour of a different scheme that relies heavily on landlords registering with an overseeing body. Being how most of them are tax dodgers and the rest dont want to their houses being inspected to see if they meet the minimum housing standards, which ALOT of them don't, there are very few places available. They refuse to accept the scheme payment, or wont rent to people who ask if they accept it. This refusal is supposed to be illegal, and the number of cases that make it to court is no way a fair representation of whats actually going on, being most people are scared to lose their homes in an already impossible housing market. This scheme is the only way anyone on welfare or low wages can afford to rent. You heard me right... people working full time jobs are having to avail of these renting schemes meant for people on welfare because they can't afford rent. Soup kitchens are overwhelmed by the amount of people using them, people on welfare, people working full time jobs, meaning those at most risk, like the homeless etc go w/o food. People who want to pay their own way cant fucking afford to. Rent, groceries and amenities are out stripping the minimum wage!! Two income households are struggling! They are being forced to use services not meant for or equipped to deal with that strain. Even two parent households have to chose between who goes to work n who stays at home to take care of the kids, cause having a second job would essentially put them in debt. People like Steamboat Jimmy really need to read that last part. Alot of companies are ableist and wont employ disabled people. Being disabled does not come cheap either, and they can't afford that desperately needed mobility aid that would make things in their life a damn sight easier. My mother, god rest her soul, became a drug addict as the drugs provided pain relief just enough so she could move somewhat. All that misery the drugs caused could have been avoided if support had been provided. She didnt want to be a drug addict, but she was sucked into a vicious cycle with no way out. This caught up to her eventually n she died in her 50's. Mental health and lack of supports play a huge role in homeless, and addiction spikes.
A single mom on social welfare, a homeless person, or junkie is not Steamboat Jimmy's enemy. Its the governments, big corporations and predatory business practices of hiking fucking prices whilst bragging about record profits for 5 years in a fucking row, and paying their board members ludicrous bonuses! Its airbnb property moguls hording houses, its vulture funds sitting on housing, creating the illusion of scarcity n drip feeding them unit by unit into the market at astronomically inflated prices. Its insurance companies with grossly inflated premiums, its subscription services bleeding you dry to use things you already fucking own. Its not taxing corporations and billionaires!! Nobody wants to be homeless, nobody wants to have to choose between keeping a roof over their head or groceries. Most people are just one bad day away from catastrophic disaster. Most households don't have enough in the bank to weather it.

How Much Do Franchises Cost? Understanding the Investment
Starting a franchise is an exciting way to launch your own business with an established brand name, but one of the first questions most prospective franchisees have is, how much do franchises cost? This is a valid question because franchise costs can vary widely depending on the brand, industry, and type of business.
Initial Franchise Fees
Typically, most franchises have an initial franchise fee, which is the cost of entering the franchise. This fee grants you the right to operate under the brand name and access its business model, trademarks, and support systems. Depending on the franchise, these initial fees can range from $10,000 for smaller franchises to as high as $50,000 or even more for well-known brands.
Ongoing Royalties and Marketing Fees
After paying the initial franchise fee, you will likely encounter ongoing costs, such as royalties and marketing fees. Royalties are usually calculated as a percentage of your revenue and can range from 4-8%. Marketing fees are typically lower and help fund national and local advertising campaigns, keeping the brand strong. This, however, means that you must account for these costs when asking yourself, how much do franchises cost over the long term?
Additional Start-Up Costs
Beyond the franchise fee and royalties, you’ll need capital to cover other startup expenses. This may include real estate costs, store build-out expenses, equipment, supplies, and inventory. Some franchises will also require that you hold a minimum amount of liquid assets or net worth to ensure you have enough capital to operate.
For example:
Real Estate and Build-Out Costs: Depending on the location and franchise requirements, this can cost anywhere from $50,000 to $500,000 or more.
Inventory and Equipment: This cost will vary depending on the industry. For a fast-food restaurant, it might include kitchen appliances and initial stock, while a retail business may need shelving, merchandise, and a point-of-sale system.
Financing Options for Franchisees
For those wondering how much franchises cost but feeling unsure about the affordability, various financing options are available. Many franchises offer in-house financing or partner with third-party lenders who specialize in franchise loans. The Small Business Administration (SBA) is also a popular resource for franchise financing, as SBA-backed loans often come with favorable terms and interest rates for small business owners.
The Importance of Due Diligence
Before committing to any franchise, conducting thorough research is essential. The Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) provides important information about the franchise, including costs, fees, legal obligations, and expectations. Reviewing this document carefully can help you understand the true cost and potential earnings of the franchise, allowing you to make an informed decision.
So, How Much Do Franchises Really Cost?
In general, franchise costs can range from as little as $20,000 to over $1 million, depending on the franchise type and location. While lower-cost franchises are available in fields such as cleaning services and vending machines, high-end franchises like popular restaurant chains tend to require a significant investment.
Understanding how much franchises cost means looking beyond just the initial investment. Considering the potential for return, expenses, and any hidden fees, you can ensure that you're making the right choice for your business goals.
