at least for fast food, excess food is budgeted for because they know they will make too much and it will get thrown away. but i had to pay 50% of my meal and half of the time i was eating on the clock
All food service workers should 100% be entitled to free ass meals on the job. Not discounted, not half off. Free.
#totally different tangent but skeleton crews and staffing based on labor percentages is also bs#if you're not paying enough to afford the food you make you have no business charging anything for employee meals

If I had more money than I'd ever spend in a lifetime, I'd spend my life operating a pizzeria at a loss. Something with the slogan of "it ain't italian but you're hungry" - and a statement of how this is not authentic italian pizza because the owner's estranged aunt's italian ex-husband would not serve pizza in his italian restaurant because as far as he was concerned, a pizza is the "just throw that shit together" dish that you make out of leftovers, and he would not serve that to paying customers even if they wanted it. True story btw.
But I'd just like to run a place where the staff is allowed to tell rude customers to fuck off. And if they're scared to do that, they can summon me downstairs to do it myself (this fantasy involves having my own apartment upstairs of the restaurant), because you don't fucking disrespect my staff like that. Develop a reputation as a place where You'd Better Act Yourself or you get nothing, which elevates the quality of the food in peoples' minds because it's human to assume that more work=more worth, and if a pizza place can afford to simply throw rude customers out, that clearly must mean that the food is just that good that going back is worth it anyway.
Hiring enough people to get the work done in a leisurely pace and occasionally have the time to chat with each other or customers. You just do the job I gave you in the time I gave you, don't steal anything and don't watch porn off your phone anywhere where the customers can see you, you're good. Don't care if you quit school at 16 if you can still mop floor. Don't care if you've been to prison because you killed some guy, as long as you're not doing that here. Don't care if you deal drugs on your free time as long as you don't bring your business to your day job. This place is exclusively for pizza business.
Have an item on the menu called "random pizza" - and if you order that one, they'll just throw in a mix of whatever ingredients we've got too much of, like if the bell peppers gotta be used before they go bad, every single random pizza is going to have them until they're either gone or need to get tossed. If you've got dietary restrictions or allergies, you gotta specify that while ordering, because other than that, random pizza is just whatever ingredients we need to get rid of. Surplus ingredients du jour.
Building a reputation as a place that's somehow simultaneously sketchy as hell but also remarkably high quality, getting five star restaurant customer service from a waiter with blue hair and stick-n-poke tattoos, there's a homeless guy at the back of the kitchen eating an order that nobody picked up, every surface is spotless and no matter how important of a suit-and-tie you are, if you won't behave yourself the owner will personally physically fight you.

Hiyaaaa!!! I’m on like some search for Atticus finch fics bc they are so rare and i am HUNGRY for some.
May i request an Atticus x baker + babysitter reader? Like his kids have been visiting this little bakery in town and Atticus decides to swing by to see if his kids ran off down there and meets reader?
I'm so full of love I could barely eat.
Atticus Finch x Gender neutral! Baker! Reader Summary: basic romantic headcanons of Atticus falling for baker! Reader Warnings: mention of violence (not put in detail, just the actions Mr. Ewell does after the trial) Word count: 1.2k A/N: I made the reader a baker only since it felt more in line with your request. And you're so real for searching for fics. ˚ʚ♡ɞ˚
Love isn’t a common thing for Atticus to pay attention to, especially since he’s so busy and a bit older. He’s got kids and their friends, work, and making sure everyone in his home is happy. There’s so much going on romantic love barely seeps in. It also was because he didn’t know how his kids would react to getting another partner, Jem didn’t need to think he moved on too fast from his mother or Scout persecuting the person he could have possibly brought home.
Every couple days he would walk home when he saw Scout and Jem running and begging him to take them to a bakery in town. It was quite odd that they would willingly go into stores without having reason. They always groaned when he brought them shopping, so it must have been a big deal for them to beg to go somewhere. He never took them on his own time since he saw it as no big deal, wanted to go home, and knew the prices were a bit high for the time.
It was one day that Calpurnia had stopped in his office to tell him she couldn’t find the kids and neither could Alexandra. He assured her that he would find them and told her to go back home, still shaken from not finding them. After work, he went around Maycomb searching for the kids before he stopped at the town’s bakery. He hadn’t been in it many times since the recession, and he didn’t feel the need to go into a store just for one thing.
When Atticus finally found Jem, Scout, and Dill, they were sitting at one of the tables, eating away at pieces of blueberry bread. He would go off on them the best he could and ask them how they got the money to even afford getting food from the place. Naturally, you would say you fed them since they asked so nicely.
Just the sight of you would cause him to hesitate to speak again. You’d go on about how sweet they were and how you gave them the food since the bakery couldn’t sell it but it was good enough to eat. Atticus would smile a little wider than Scout and Jem have seen in a long while, thanking you for not charging them. He’d get the two to leave, grabbing the bread and leaving with a small smile.
“Why are you smiling so much?” Scout would ask as they walked home, holding the bread in her hands. Atticus would shake off the question.
“I can’t smile?” He’d remark, patting her head softly as they continued down the road.
It would become more common for Atticus to go to the bakery after work, just going off to talk to you. Each day that Scout and Jem would wait for Atticus, they would look at the corner, waiting for him. And he comes from the other end of the road. Sometimes he would wait until he’s close enough to pipe up, giving them a spook sometimes.
Once the summer comes, they would try finding why he comes from a different area after work and would watch as he walks from the bakery. He’d be questioned an insane amount, specifically from Scout. Atticus would brush them off the best he could, telling them he was talking to a friend.
The romance would be gradual, he would come in to find Jem and Scout to get them home, jokingly telling you off for feeding them pastries before dinner. Of course, it wouldn't be the best joke since he isn’t very good with satire. Either way, he’d thank you for not charging them for the food and be off… even if he wanted to stay longer.
Atticus would stop by more often, simply talking to you about business, the normal old people talk. He would try keeping it casual enough to not make you uncomfortable since he isn’t too good with flirting, so even if he tried it would come off as awkward. Scout said it herself; the kind of humor Atticus tries to have can only truly be done well by a lady Finch.
You would naturally give Atticus the test pastries for him and his kids to try. You’d give him the job of tester since he’d come by so often.
It was most obvious to Jem and Scout as time goes on, they both knew it was because of you. Atticus’s gaze would linger on you, and he would hesitate to say they needed to leave.
One night when the bakery had closed, Atticus stayed back with you to make sure you could close the shop safely (at least that was his reasoning for it). He’d sit at the counter and watch you quietly go on about your day, the new pastries sold, and how things were doing back at your home.
When you had fully closed the shop, he would stop before you could turn away to go home and finally work up the nerve to ask you out. Even if Atticus had more experiences in life than he would prefer bragging about, he still falters with asking a woman out.
“I would like to take you out this Saturday…,” Atticus would draw on his sentence, smiling slightly, his hat held on his chest, close to his heart. Though he held the top of his hat, he could feel his fast heartbeat. “If you’re alright with the idea.”
Naturally, you would accept, and he would go home with a small smile, knowing that he could take you out. Atticus would bring you a plan to bring you to a nice restaurant, get his best clothes for the date, and get Aunt Alexandra to take care of Jem and Scout. Atticus could only hope they didn’t press him too hard on what was going on.
The date would go well, the food being nice and the conversations being the same. As calm as Atticus made himself out to be, his heart was pounding. He almost forgot how nerve wracking it is taking someone out. He would try his best being smooth about how he feels to the best he could, buttering you up but not enough to come off too strong.
Hiding how the relationship from the children wouldn’t be that prominent after several dates. Atticus never hides anything else from them, how he feels about you is theirs to know about since you would be around more often. Of course, they knew to an extent. Jem would just say he knows, and Scout would ask if he was too old to do something like that.
The relationship would stay nearly exclusive to the family, more so since he didn’t want word getting out and possibly getting someone on you for being associated with him. Though, Atticus is beyond loving to you. He’d still stop by the bakery to talk to you when you were free.
After the trial and with the rampage Mr. Ewell was having on anyone associated with it, he’d target you too. It would lead to Atticus trying to escort you more often from work and home. If Mr. Ewell continued his mistreatment of you, Atticus would suggest you move in with him. It would not only be for your protection but also because he wants you to finally live with him. He’s old, he won’t live forever, and he’d prefer living with you in his arms at night.

To anyone who makes a fuss about the prices artists and crafters set for their work:
When I was still making and selling jewelry, I attended and sold my work at conventions. There was a sign on my table that stated "anyone who tells me to lower my prices will pay an extra 10% with each complaint."
You complain about not being paid enough by your employer. Rather than demanding a wage increase from your employer, you tell artists and crafters to lower their prices instead. You're siding with your employer's business model in all but name.
If a business cannot afford to pay it's staff/employees a liveable wage, they are a failed business.
Artists and crafters are independent business owners. Charging the federal minimum wage helps no one. In fact, it increases the chances of burning out. It also increases the risk of injury because now we must make more things, accept more commissions, and finish them quickly in order to make enough money to pay rent/mortgage, utilities, food, transportation/fuel, medical care, etc.
Because we're not making enough money, we need a job other than our own work. This limits our time and energy. Again, it leads to injury and burnout.
How does this help you? How does this help us?
It doesn't.
If you believe you could do the things we do, then learn how and make the things you want. It also means you will need to do a considerable amount of shopping to acquire the things you need. Then you need time to learn. Plan on spending years learning how to make quilts that meet the standards you demand? How about years spent learning how to make realistic portraits or cityscapes?
Save your money for the thing you want to commission. Talk to the crafters about thing you want from their shop. Many artists and crafters share a policy of accepting 50% upfront and the other 50% when the thing is finished. For shop listings, 50% upfront and weekly or monthly payments afterward. You will likely be required to sign a contract regarding this as well, especially from those of us who have a strict "no refund" policy.
Stop telling us to lower our prices. Unionize and demand your employer raise their wages.
#words from the artist#i am so tired of people telling me my prices are too high.#don't bother telling me my prices are unrealistic. they're not unrealistic. if they were i wouldn't receive commissions nor would#anything in my shop sell. pull your head out of your ass and take a deep breath of air. clearly you're suffocating on thr propaganda#and need to shit it out.#to fellow artists and crafters: share your WIP pics. after i started doing there was an immediate drop in the number#of complaints i receive regarding my prices and rhe amount of time patience and work is involved in making quilts. even my tiny ones.

More AU lore, who cheered?
We already know a bit about Casper's childhood thanks to Charlie, but I wanted to add a bit more spice to it, as well as what happened after Casper moved!
(quick note: I've seen people color-code names so I'm gonna try and do that, though I don't know if specific characters have specific shades, so bear with me here! :])
First off, Cas' parents weren't the best. They were very absent, preferring to spend their time and money on alcohol and drugs instead of on their child. This is why Cas spends so much time with Charlie, he was the only thing they had.
Then, Casper's dad lost his job, and they had to move back in with Casper's grandparents who lived hours away. That last week with Charlie was horrible, knowing that they had to leave the person that they held closest to their heart, the person who they loved, all because their stupid dad couldn't hold a job.
They didn't stay at their grandparents long. Or rather, Cas didn't stay there long. They got a job in the new town, and saved money till they had enough to get an apartment. It was old and broken down, but it was better than the crampt, smoke-filled house they were forced to move to.
Life was hard for a while, Cas had to get a second job in a shady area. It was scary, but to Cas it was worth it. Everything came to a head, thought, when they were jumped one night.
They were just heading home from their second job, when a group of thugs jumped them for their wallet. It was the scariest moment of Casper's life up till then, they didn't know if they would stop at their wallet, if they would hurt them.
Then, they heard some shouting from the distance, and before they knew it, the thugs that had jumped them were gone.
And in their place stood someone else. A well dressed man who helped them up from the ground and made sure they had their wallet and everything. This was strange to Casper, as no one has shown them real kindness in a long time.
The new stranger offered for him to walk Casper home, and Cas agreed.
While they walked, Casper got to know the stranger a bit. His job was to gather intel for his boss (thought he never said who) and that he was walking back from another mission when he saw Casper in distress. The stranger felt bad for them, so he decided to help.
It was nice talking to the new stranger. When they got to his apartment, the new friend surprised them once more.
"Is this your place?" He said, surprised by how run-down the building was.
"Yeah," Casper sighed, "it's not great, but it's the best I can afford"
"Best you can afford? Do you not have a good job?" The man turned to look at Cas.
"No, I work at the convenience store down the street and the food counter in the bowling alley down town" Casper looked down at the ground as they kicked a rock "they don't pay much, but it's all I can get for now."
"Really?" The stranger looked in shock before they began to think a bit. "What are you good at?"
"Huh?" Cas looked back up.
"What are you good at? Can you fight? Are you really smart with numbers? Can you talk to people well?" He listed a few things out.
"Well, I was really interested in computers when I was in High School. I hacked the school Chromebooks so I could do whatever I wanted on them" Casper smiled at the memory, it was one of their greatest achievements in school.
"Well then," Casper's new friend smiled "how would you like a job as a hacker and intel agent? You seem like you'll do perfectly"
"Wait, really?" Casper stood in shock, had this stranger really offered him a job? As a hacker no less?
"Yeah, it pays really well. Thought, there are a few details that might make you rethink it-" the man began but was cut off by Casper.
"Yes! Yes! Oh my gosh yes!" Casper jumped, smiling wide "I know you're probably in some shady business, but I don't care if I have to hack some rich guys computer or whatever, I'll do it!"
The man just smiled at Casper and laughed. "Well then, I'll come get you tomorrow to meet the boss then."
Casper just smiled as they watched their new friend walk away. "oh, by the way" Casper called out, "what's your name?"
The man turned and smiled once more. "Rook" is all he said "can't wait to start working with you, Casper"

The Rowntrees Ultimate Decades Challenge - Winter 1374
I'm not feeling as motivated to play and I'm starting college soon, so I'm going to try writing shorter posts from now on. This year will be a story in 4 parts (one each season).
At the start of 1374, news arrived in the village: the fighting in the war against France had come to an end! A few men who fought came back to the village, but news from Gilbert hadn't arrived yet. The family waited anxiously for Gilbert's return but were not sure when he'd arrive. For the time, Kymmie chose not to say anything to Sabina, to not get her hopes up.
Since Finnian's injury, the women were left to take care of the garden. Kymmie and Sabina did not have the strength or stamina to work outside for long hours, so a lot of the tasks fell to Edussa. However, having her work in the garden brought down the store, which Kymmie was often too busy to open.
Edussa loved running the store. She learned simple math from Kymmie when she first married into the family and enjoyed counting up the change and bartering with customers. While gardening, she tried to come up with ideas to make gardening more efficient, so she could return to running the store. Then one day, Edussa came up with a plan she thought was good enough to run by her mother-in-law.
Kymmie had noticed that Edussa did not enjoy gardening and tried to calm her daughter-in-law.
"I know gardening is boring, but perhaps it would help for you to concentrate on the food and money we will get once the crops are harvested," Kymmie advised. "And you taking care of the garden means Finnian is not stressing about it, and he will heal faster."
Edussa was not convinced. "Um, yeah," she said distractingly. "Speaking of the garden, um, I had an idea of how we can take care of it without me having to do it. But I'm really not sure it will work."
Kymmie wanted to chuckle at Edussa's nervousness. She went for a joke instead. "What is it, sell me off as hunting bait? Because I think I'm too old to fetch that good of a price."
Edussa smiled weakly. "So I was thinking, we can't afford to hire a gardener. But... what if we can?"
Kymmie looked on, confused.
"There's going to be a lot of men coming from the war, right?" Edussa spoke quickly. "So, there will be more people, but the same number of jobs. And probably some people who don't have any life to get back to will pass through our village. And all these people will need jobs but won't need to be paid much. If we hire a gardener now, we can pay him half the usual price and still find someone."
Immediately after she said her idea, Edussa wished she hadn't. Kymmie was usually kind to her, but what if she thought Edussa was lazy or ungrateful for not just dealing with the current God-given circumstances?
But Kymmie beamed at her instead.
"Edussa, sweetie, that's a wonderful idea! You are a very clever young lady to think about the situation like that. You are right. I remember my father telling me that after he came back from the war when he was young, many stragglers showed up on his farm looking for jobs. I will open the shop tomorrow and ask around for someone looking for a job."
Kymmie wondered how many ideas Edussa had kept quiet about because she feared a negative response.
"Sweetheart, you're a very smart woman," Kymmie told her daughter-in-law. "When you have ideas, even if they end up not working out, you should still tell me about them. It's important to be curious and constantly think about ways to improve your situation."
After talking to Kymmie, Edussa was ecstatic. Her entire life she thought her purpose was to be a good mother, and she was shocked when her first child didn't bring her the joy she expected. Now Edussa realized her purpose was to be a good mother, just not in the way she thought. She wanted to run the store successfully and come up with tricks to sell more stuff. And one day, by being a successful businesswoman, she would make enough money to guarantee her children didn't have to be serfs. Edussa was grateful that she married into a family where she wasn't just stuck as a farmer's wife.

actually screw it yeah update post time, buckle up cuz life has literally been insane since The Move initially started and we're gonna sorta cliffnotes this shit starting with stuff i have probably already talked about
✩ got a job offer across the country at the beginning of august, accepted, ended up not making it out of state in time to actually start it due to some transport issues
✩ started heading out at the end of september (finally) alongside my parents, shitass car overheated so hard we couldn't go further, parents headed out and we stuck around where we broke down in my parents' rv which was also having trouble
✩ left the rv mid-october to head back to stay with some family back 'home', been here since
✩ got a job while waiting for parents to be able to help at least me get where we were going and get a job so i can get my husband out there too, lasted two weeks before life problems + my shitty mental health made me quit for Actual Straight-Up Safety Reasons
✩ have spent this entire time being pissed off and trying not to be ungrateful for what i've got but it's difficult because MAN does the family who's letting us stay here make me want to commit crimes. love them to bits but we have. vastly different needs and views.
✩ just like. imagine being a grandparent who is constantly like "are you guys eating enough? do you need help?" while making food that you have been informed your grandchild's husband cannot eat for Health Reasons, and then getting upset that your grandchild gets irritated about the fact you're offering them food their husband cannot eat. she's trying but it's just. frustrating.
✩ got the flu for the first time ever and it knocked me on my fucking ass for almost two weeks, still sort of getting over it almost three weeks after the symptoms fully stopped. when i say i literally lost 10 pounds i couldn't afford to lose i am serious. i couldn't eat fucken ANYTHING it was horrible
✩ have a flight booked to get out of state on Feb 10th!! + have job interviews set up already, so things are looking up, busy packing and cleaning up and making sure my husband (and best friend who is staying with us) will manage to survive without me as i am the only one with Real Life Adult Experience out of the group for a lot of reasons
✩ and i think that's it? idk there's been A Lot and i don't feel like getting into it in detail at this point lmao, it'll edge way too close to me venting
✩ anyways i'm still offering commissions!! just now it's more "pay what you want" because i certainly have time to write i just have trouble working on stuff that's For Me at the moment lol
#rhysie.txt#rhysie talks#personal#sorta#anyways no for real hmu if you want me to write somethin for you#you can just throw $5 at me along with an idea and i'll write it#... generally speaking at least like i at least gotta know the source material

Use this magic wand to drink your fancy coffee at home instead of in traffic.
It doesn't matter what brand. They are all basically the same with a different alphabet soup of letters on them. A rechargeable holds a charge for over two weeks of daily use and froths up milk like nobody's business.
Hey, would you like to avoid waiting eternally in line for a sip of that sweet elixir to be found only in your pretentious neighborhood Starbucks?
Would you like less of the few dollars you still have control over, after paying out all your hard earned money just to frickin exist as a biological organism with basic needs like food, water, and shelter. And maybe some love, if you're lucky. How much of that money do you want going to companies of morally and ethically questionable views on civil rights, fair trade, abuse and enslavement of indigenous people who grow the coffee, and genocides?
I don't want to give Starbucks corporate my money either. And it's not like they pay their workers enough to benefit the community either.
But I need that sweet elixir and I can't get by on Dunkin.
Well, have I got a life hack for you: Make your own damn coffee and put it in your own damn cup yourself.
Heavy cream is 5 bucks a quart. Heavy cream lasts for 3-6 weeks in some households in an opened cardboard container. It's pure fat and bacteria generally cannot consume fats. Cool fact of the day.
Heavy cream is the elixir of happiness. You can't feel bad while eating a whole bowl of newly whipped cream. Next time you feel down, put an inch of cream in a cup. Add some of your favorite sweeter. Use your magic milk frother wand for a minute or two. Then just spoon it in. Trust me.
Buy the best coffee beans you can afford. You can more than afford 2 week's worth of ethically sourced, super high quality beans, from whatever origin or blend you like, if you just skip 3 Starbucks runs.
Buy a coffee grinder. Fresh ground coffee. There is nothing like it.
Did you know that the newer coffee makers all come standard with timers. Even the dirt cheap ones. You don't even have to get out of bed to make the coffee all cold and fumbly. Just set it up at night and push the timer button before you brush your teeth. Wake up to the smell of that golden cup.
And then, while you enjoy that first sip of coffee neat and black, you take your magic wand and you use it to froth up milk. After you have enjoyed your pure coffee bliss, and pour your foamy milk onto your coffee. Full fat milk. Or half and half. Maybe indulge in cream. I suggest cream.
Frothing the milk is a learned skill. It takes some practice but you'll grasp the idea.
You can vary the froth by how long you froth the milk or cream. If you froth cream you will immediately get whipped cream and I highly suggest that.
Better, easier, more inexpensive, ethical morning coffee. In your own way. Thanks to today's technological wizardry!
Here's the better part. Instead of gulping down Starbucks in traffic, use your own darn coffee to help you center yourself for the day.
We can all find an extra 15 minutes in our morning to just sit down and drink your coffee before you face this day. (Hell, you probably have to budget at least 15 minutes to spend in line for your coffee every day already. Take it back.)
Find yourself in the moment, drink your coffee, contemplate a bird or a beetle or a cloud. Something of this cosmos. Drink your coffee and focus on something of this living cosmos. Not to become one with it or anything like that. Just to focus on something real that is alive and feel the kinship. It has a wonderful effect of resetting our view of ourselves into a more positive one. Sip your own darn coffee in comfort.
Then enrich your soul with 5 minutes of poetry, scripture, or philosophy. Sip your coffee as you ponder its meaning and significance.
Ready yourself to face your day. Do not review your to do list. Just prepare yourself to roll out. As you sip your coffee.
It can be the silliest dumbest mug in the world. It can be a crumbling creation from a 5yo or a more aesthetically pleasing form. Now fill it with a gourmet whatever the frick you want for 50 cents a day. Heck yeah. Every morning coffee is a uniquely you experience.
Build a better morning coffee ritual than gulping it down like a drug while cursing at other drivers. We can evolve as a society and join the rest of the civilized world.
Make your own darn coffee. Have a morning coffee ritual. It's a human right. Make a better morning coffee ritual for yourself. Be creative. Be yourself. Drink your own darn good coffee. Your way.
#coffee#starbucks#fuck starbucks#its actually easier than going to starbucks#But I want a latte not just normal coffee#I'd bet 90 percent of people can't tell the difference between espresso with a lot of steamed milk and very strong coffee with milk#you just like the taste of coffee and milk#they sell espresso makers too

I need to scream for a minute on this whole short-term rental thing going on right now in BC. This gets very angry and depressing, that's your warning. I'm so mad.
Landlords are screaming and crying and whining about how their investments are going to come crashing down on them because of the new rules about short-term rentals and I can't help but scream and cry back at them because they're the fucking reason the housing market is so fucked right now.
Like yeah. Your investments COULD come crashing down on you. THAT'S THE POINT OF INVESTMENTS. THAT THERE IS RISK. IF THERE WAS NO RISK IT WOULDN'T BE A REAL INVESTMENT ANYMORE. Like all these fucking rich pricks want to whine and complain that it's too much risk and they can't afford to blah blah blah, like okay and??? Did you think that nothing would ever change and you would just keep making more and more money without anything else happening?? Don't you realize that the more money you make off the poor, the less money the poor have??????? Like the entire reason investing works the way it does is because of risk. If there was absolutely no risk involved you wouldn't be able to make tons of money off of it. That's literally the point.
I hope the rest of the provinces follow suit and ban short-term rentals the same way BC is doing. Force these fucking assholes to sell. That way there will be a boom in properties for sale and prices will go down.
I'm a legal assistant. I make almost $20/hr. I can't afford a single rental in my rural community without a roommate. I can't even pay my own expenses right now without my partner. The most the bank will give me for a mortgage is $75k. Do you think there is a single house for sale in my area for that? There's one, and it's a fucking dump, the foundation is crumbling out from underneath it. I have a "real job" and I still can't afford to live. Everyone that keeps saying we need to just work harder and get real jobs and whatever else is so delusional. As if working at McDonald's isn't a real job?? Do you go to McDonald's? Do you expect there to be at least one or two competent adults preparing food? Food preparation. Fucking food preparation, which, if done wrong could be incredibly bad. You want that to be run entirely by high school students? Okay, then you can only go there in the evenings and on weekends. Sorry, no adults want to work here during business hours because they all have "real" jobs so if you want your Big Mac at noon on a Tuesday you're out of luck. And because they're children, they may not make the right choices and they may prepare your food wrong and it could make you sick. Adults make that mistake too, but children are still learning and growing and the chances they'll make that mistake are probably higher.
Those of us with the "real" jobs still don't make enough anyway. Prices are so badly inflated. Groceries cost more now than ever before. Gas prices are insane and it costs me $20 every time I drive to and from work because I have to live a half hour away from the town I work in because it's cheaper rent here and it's only cheaper because there's nothing in this town and the house I live in is hardly 600 sq.ft. I drive a 30 year old truck that's falling apart because I certainly can't afford a new vehicle and even if I could, they only last like 5 years anyway and are incredibly unreliable.
Oh and let's not even get into the insane crime rates and drug problem here. My town is second in the province for crime. A town of less than 4000 people is SECOND in the entire province for crime. The first being Thompson. Most businesses in town function with their doors locked all day and you have to knock or ring a doorbell to be let in. You can't just walk into most places anymore. You see broken windows all over town, lots of businesses have their windows boarded up. Lots of places are also closing earlier than they used to because if they're open after dark there's more crime. The grocery stores have security guards posted by the doors to deal with shoplifters. When I worked at a gas station I had a guy steal a carton of smokes out of my hands in broad daylight, not even hiding his face from the cameras. Also at the gas station I'd caught multiple people trying to use credit or debit cards that they had stolen and when the machine insisted they use the pin and they didn't know the pin they would leave. We had hundreds of dollars in theft the year that I was there of just drinks and snacks.
We ran into our local MP a few months ago, Jon's family knows him, and he was chatting with us about the budget and spending and he was SO proud of himself for a bunch of things that he didn't even have anything to do with and he was so proud of the budget and where money was being spent and blah blah blah, but I was sitting there boiling and seething and I wanted to scream at him and it took so much self-control not to because he is so out of touch and unfortunately he was re-elected this recent provincial election and I'm bitter about it. I'm so fucking bitter about it.
We are already working harder than any generation before us and we make so little. Things are worse financially than the great fucking depression and they want to tell us to just work harder?????? I'm going to explode. I'm so beyond angry. I am so fucking sick and tired of this and there's nothing I can do. I'm entirely powerless to all of this and that's gotta be the most frustrating part. The fact that things are falling apart around me and I can't do fucking anything to fix it. My future looks so fucking hopeless at no fault of my own. I've done everything I was supposed to do and yet here I am. Can't get by. Can't do the shit I want to do. Probably won't have a retirement and will have to work until I die or something.

I hate tipping culture. I think it's disgusting how business owners can get away with paying employees below minimum wage just to thrust the responsibility of paying my wages onto the customer who's already paying exorbitant prices for food.
It's hard sometimes. I catch myself getting mad at customers who don't tip. It's frustrating driving through rush hour traffic to hand deliver someone their food only to get stiffed on a tip. I have to remind myself that it's my boss who's perpetuating the tipping culture. 60% of my wages come from gratuities so having days where I don't make a lot of tips really does hurt. I wish it wasn't like this but if you're able to spare a couple of bucks laying around, it's so much better than nothing. I don't want to sound like I'm entitled to your money because I'm not. We're all hard up so I understand that it's hard enough just to afford food let alone a tip. I will never be angry with someone who can't afford a tip, unless you're standing in a McMansion in the hills. In that case, you can open up the McScrooge vault and get me a $5 for God's sake.

We Ran and Found Home - Chapter 3 | Nancy (April 1957) BOOK PREVIEW
The morning air was crisp as Nancy held on tightly to her boyfriend. The motorcycle engine roared as the pair zipped down the road. The couple were on their way to a park to enjoy each other's company; getting together was becoming more limited with passing time. Nancy's family did not approve of Lonnie. He worked in a mill. A low-level position that her father thought to be beneath the family.
"You can do better than that rubbish!" her father would say. "He's nothing!"
Nancy's family was more than well off. They were incredibly wealthy. Her father was an investment advisor that worked with clients across the country. Her mother never worked a day in her life and wished the same for her precious angel.
"Oh honey," her mother would say at least once a week, "once you get Lonnie out of your system, you can move on to someone better! Someone who will take care of you. Someone with real money. Lonnie is not good enough for you, baby." Nancy wouldn't hear it. She made sure her parents knew that she didn't approve of their non-approval.
She would sneak out, day and night, to meet with Lonnie. And when her father caught her sneaking back into the house at 2 a.m. he blew his top. She did the same; she was her father's daughter.
"How could you want to waste your life with someone like him?!"
"Because I love him!" Nancy said. "He's kind to me. And he's real. Not like the fake boys you try to introduce to me!"
"Why don't you give Paul a chance? He's a stand-up guy! He's a doctor for Pete's sake, Nancy. A doctor! You'd rather live like a common dunderhead!"
"Paul is rude and I know for a fact he likes to hop around with other girls."
"Well, you need to make up your mind in the near future. You're nineteen! Do you know how odd it looks for us that you haven't yet married? A girl from a respectable family is unable to wed and have proper children because she's messing around with a mill rat? Nancy, you know better. You were raised better."
"I will marry Lonnie!"
Her father scoffed. "And how is Mr. Lonnie going to pay for your wedding, hm? How will he afford an engagement ring? The dress? The venue? How will he pay for anything, Nancy? Because I sure as hell will not pay for this ridiculousness. And don't even think to tell me that you don't need any of that. No daughter of mine will elope! I won't have it, Nancy! Our family displays model behavior and nothing less!"
When Nancy and Lonnie arrived at the park, they set up a little picnic under a couple of trees that shaded them from the sun. Nancy had swiped cucumber sandwiches from her kitchen that the staff had made. She also grabbed fruit and a small bottle of wine from the cellar. This was the first time in two weeks that Nancy was able to see Lonnie. In that time, she missed him dearly, but she knew he was probably busy with work and didn't think too much of it. The two of them sat on a quilted blanket in the grass as they ate and drank.
"I'm so glad we got to meet today. I've missed you," she said.
"I've missed you too, Nan."
"How are things going at the mill?"
"Oh, there's nothing new. The same old thing as always."
"Remember the last time we were together? And I snuck back home at two in the morning?"
Lonnie nodded. "Of course."
"My father caught me," Nancy giggled.
"Oh no," Lonnie laughed with a bite of sandwich in his mouth.
"He told me to stop seeing you and think about marrying Paul Anderson."
"Oh? And what did my Nan say to that?"
Nancy laid back on the quilted blanket. "I told him I would marry you."
Lonnie said nothing. It went silent between them.
"What's wrong?" Nancy asked.
Lonnie took another bite of his sandwich and sniffed, wiping his nose.
"Lonnie, what is it?"
Lonnie cleared his throat after swallowing his food. "Nan, you know I love you, truly. But you have to know by now that I'm not right for you."
Nancy sat up from the blanket. "Well, you know my family wants me to get married."
"But not to me. No way in hell."
"Lonnie, I don't care about that. I would marry you if you asked me."
"Nan," Lonnie took a deep breath. "I can't marry you. In fact, it pains me to say it but I can't see you anymore. This is the last time."
Nancy couldn't believe what he was saying to her. "What do you mean you can't see me anymore and this is the last time?"
"I do love you, Nan. But your family will never accept me. It would be hard on me, hell, it would be hard on you. I can't deal with that. I can't mess around anymore."
Nancy scoffed. "Mess around?"
"There's someone else, Nan. Her name is Jane. I can see a future with her. An easy one where we don't have to live up to someone else's expectations. Her family loves me." Lonnie had his head down. He wouldn't look Nancy in the eye.
"So," Nancy said, "you're saying that this is over?"
"Yeah."
Nancy pursed her lips and tightened her fists around the quilted blanket that they were on. She never thought Lonnie would suddenly up and leave. They were going steady for two years.
"I'd like you to take me home now."
Lonnie helped clean up the picnic and drove Nancy home on his motorcycle. They were silent the entire drive there. When they arrived at her house he didn't even kiss her goodbye. He only waved as he took off down the long brick driveway. Nancy wandered through the front door of her house. She was greeted by the head butler, Willard.
"Miss Nancy, your father requests your presence in his study right away."
"What for?" Nancy was fed up. All she wanted to do was crawl into bed.
"Your father has a piece of exciting news for you, miss."

LIGHT OF LIFE 610
John 1:4
DIVINE ORDER 175: WORKING ORDER 70
2Ti 4:5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, DO THE WORK OF AN EVANGELIST, make FULL PROOF of thy ministry. KJV
MAN MUST WORK 21: UNDERSTANDING JOB SPECIFICATION 6
The last point made in the last lesson (Apportioning enough time per duty) leads us to another important point.
It is not only a problem that some people are ignored outright in service delivery but that the specifics of delivery may need to be peculiar to recipients.
4. THE RIGHT DELIVERY FOR THE RIGHT PEOPLE
1Co 9:19,22 For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more…To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. KJV
Did you know that DSTV is for the rich, who can afford to pay for the year and upfront, even though they rarely watch, but GoTV is for the poor, with minimal features but at least some etertainment?
Well, Christianity does not run on those exact principles. Christians must deliver the very same product to every single one but with reference to the position of the target people or their communicable language.
We must deliver it in the way and manner that is easily assimilated by those people.
1Co 3:1-2 As a matter of fact, my friends, I COULD NOT TALK TO YOU AS I TALK TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE SPIRIT; I had to talk to you as though you belonged to this world, as children in the Christian faith. I had to feed you milk, not solid food, BECAUSE YOU WERE NOT READY FOR IT. AND EVEN NOW YOU ARE NOT READY FOR IT, GNB
Yes, it’s frustrating taking the pain to reach out to certain people, but if we really love people and we want them to benefit too from our products, we must be patient.
There’s a language for the poor, rich, weak, strong, educated and illiterate, and we must learn how to communicate to all.
As an Engineer, if you delivered a Machine to an illiterate but don’t know how to communicate “user’s manual” to him, he may kill himself with the machine.
Many who bring salvation to Muslims have had to preach Christ from their Quran. Got it?
Act 17:22-23 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. KJV
Paul was Preaching about Jesus and resurrection (Vs18), which was senseless to them (I Cor 1:18), so when he was invited to the council, he had to re-introduce the Gospel from the angle of their own demented religious practices.
In the business world, to sell products to someone, you must make him see it from the veiwpoint of his need of those products.
Joh 4:16-19 Jesus told her, "Go and bring your husband." The woman answered, "I don't have a husband." "That's right," Jesus replied, "you're telling the truth. You don't have a husband. You have already been married five times, and the man you are now living with isn't your husband." The woman said, "Sir, I can see that you are a prophet. CEV
Jesus merely used the “well of Jacob”, which the Samaritans depended so much upon, and the woman’s [exposed] personal life, to arrest her attention totally.
Other points will come later. The woman forgot water and ran off to call others. We all know the rest of the story.
5. KEEP RECORDS OF PROGRESS
Mar 8:18-20 Are you blind and deaf? Don't you remember? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets did you fill with leftover pieces?" They told him, "Twelve." "When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many large baskets did you fill with leftover pieces?" They answered him, "Seven." GW
Jesus was using the points above to teach His Apostles another lesson but I figure that if Jesus could remember such details as leftover baskets of food from miracles, He would be sure to keep records of their works amongst the people to know if there’s progress or not.
Mat 11:20-21 Then Jesus began to criticize openly the cities in which he had done many of his miracles, because they did not repent. “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. NET
Nobody wants losses anyhow. While patience is of importance, there must be a point where you conclude that you have done enough and must move on or re-strategize.
Mat 13:58 Jesus did not do many miracles there, because the people did not believe in him. ERV
Recording losses or failure doesn’t mean you totally abandon the target though. It could mean they are not ripe for it yet and can be revisited in future, like after Pentecost.
Got it?
Your Labour of Love will not end in frustration and discouragement, IN JESUS NAME.
See you on Monday, as we proceed with this interesting Subtopic.

How Much Do Franchises Cost? Understanding the Investment
Starting a franchise is an exciting way to launch your own business with an established brand name, but one of the first questions most prospective franchisees have is, how much do franchises cost? This is a valid question because franchise costs can vary widely depending on the brand, industry, and type of business.
Initial Franchise Fees
Typically, most franchises have an initial franchise fee, which is the cost of entering the franchise. This fee grants you the right to operate under the brand name and access its business model, trademarks, and support systems. Depending on the franchise, these initial fees can range from $10,000 for smaller franchises to as high as $50,000 or even more for well-known brands.
Ongoing Royalties and Marketing Fees
After paying the initial franchise fee, you will likely encounter ongoing costs, such as royalties and marketing fees. Royalties are usually calculated as a percentage of your revenue and can range from 4-8%. Marketing fees are typically lower and help fund national and local advertising campaigns, keeping the brand strong. This, however, means that you must account for these costs when asking yourself, how much do franchises cost over the long term?
Additional Start-Up Costs
Beyond the franchise fee and royalties, you’ll need capital to cover other startup expenses. This may include real estate costs, store build-out expenses, equipment, supplies, and inventory. Some franchises will also require that you hold a minimum amount of liquid assets or net worth to ensure you have enough capital to operate.
For example:
Real Estate and Build-Out Costs: Depending on the location and franchise requirements, this can cost anywhere from $50,000 to $500,000 or more.
Inventory and Equipment: This cost will vary depending on the industry. For a fast-food restaurant, it might include kitchen appliances and initial stock, while a retail business may need shelving, merchandise, and a point-of-sale system.
Financing Options for Franchisees
For those wondering how much franchises cost but feeling unsure about the affordability, various financing options are available. Many franchises offer in-house financing or partner with third-party lenders who specialize in franchise loans. The Small Business Administration (SBA) is also a popular resource for franchise financing, as SBA-backed loans often come with favorable terms and interest rates for small business owners.
The Importance of Due Diligence
Before committing to any franchise, conducting thorough research is essential. The Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) provides important information about the franchise, including costs, fees, legal obligations, and expectations. Reviewing this document carefully can help you understand the true cost and potential earnings of the franchise, allowing you to make an informed decision.
So, How Much Do Franchises Really Cost?
In general, franchise costs can range from as little as $20,000 to over $1 million, depending on the franchise type and location. While lower-cost franchises are available in fields such as cleaning services and vending machines, high-end franchises like popular restaurant chains tend to require a significant investment.
Understanding how much franchises cost means looking beyond just the initial investment. Considering the potential for return, expenses, and any hidden fees, you can ensure that you're making the right choice for your business goals.

a couple of things. One: this knight was born sword-first and there's something poetically perfect about that.
two: while i really really don't think every skill hobby and interest should be monetized, i think this is a useful opportunity to talk about pricing your arts and crafts if you are selling them.
It says this took 41 hours. That's handy, that means we can basically do a one-to-one comparison to a week of work. i'm not educated in papercraft or the origami sculpture market, but let's assume this person is an expert in the field.
So, in my area, minimum wage is $16, but most of us agree that a living wage is much higher. I make $23 an hour and can't afford an apartment. So let's say a reasonable wage is $30 an hour. That means after taxes, you could afford an average one bedroom apartment, good food, and if you are careful and no costly emergencies befall you, you could probably even take a week long vacation once a year. That's not greedy, that's reasonable. Actually that's kind of sad because of how hard it is to achieve such a low bar, and it doesn't even get into saving for retirement, but we're not getting into that on this post.
So at $30 an hour as your established reasonable income (honestly i'm lowballing a bit, an expert in their field probably deserves better than an average 1 bed apartment, but for the sake of this exercise...) for 40 hours of labor you're talking $1,200 for this crafted object. AS A STARTING POINT.
Because, say you're a business. Say your business makes stamped metal figurines. You have to pay for the metal, you have to pay for the time it takes someone to operate the machine, and you have to pay for the machine that stamps out the figurines.
Say you get a loan to purchase the machine. So what you do is, to every stamped metal item you sell, you add some money to the selling price that goes toward repaying the loan. Even if you don't get a loan, you need to pay yourself back the money you spent on the machine.
In this case, this person didn't buy a machine. What they did instead was spend probably at least a thousand hours practicing their craft. Probably also at least a thousand dollars on paper. The important thing is, this artist deserves to be paid for their time and materials perfecting their craft the same way a business has to pay off their machine.
SO. In my opinion, that makes this paper sculpture worth at least $1,500 or possibly as much as $2k.
Now when this person was starting out, let's say they made an impressive tiger. And let's say it was their first attempt at this kind of tiger sculpture, and is less detailed and the quality isn't as good, and it took them the same 40 hours. But now that they are good enough to do this knight, they could have made that same tiger in 20 hours and the quality would be better.
At that point in their career, they wouldn't necessarily be trying to get their learning hours paid for because they are still pretty deep in their learning curve (you never stop learning, but there is a point where you are only learning expert level stuff and we're saying this tiger was made before that point was reached). The time was 40 hours but it could have been made by an expert in 20 hours, and the quality would have been better.
So at that point, maybe you say "i still deserve minimum wage" which is true and for all 40 hours would be $640 plus maybe it took you 3 tries and therefore 3 large sheets of origami paper at like, idk, 35 bucks each, so of course you're going to include your cost of materials to make about $740.
Now you look at the market you have access to (that's how much comparable items are actually selling for) and you stay honest about the quality of your piece, and you decide you'll actually be able to sell your origami tiger sculpture for about $375 (which i just did a quick shopping search for hand-made origami sculptures and that seems like a competitive price point for what i'm picturing)
So you take the remaining $265 of your labor costs, and you call 17 hours of your labor on this tiger Learning Hours, and that's what you're making up for when you charge $2k for the knight later. This means you're making minimum wage (for the quality) for 23 hours of labor, which is somewhat reasonable, because a professional / expert could have made it in 20 hours.
At this point it's worth considering making 10 or 20 more of these tigers to sell, because you can probably get the quality up and the time down pretty significantly by making the same tiger several times in a row, and you can keep the price the same or even bump it up a little for the quality increase, and that' probably the quickest way to move you toward getting paid 23 hours worth of labor for 23 hours of work. If you keep making the tigers, the quality gets really good, it takes you much less time to make, and now you're charging like $490 each, and some of that is to make up your learning hours on the first few tigers.
Now, every artist and crafter is going to experience these things differently, and not everyone will agree with every point of logic i've landed on, but this is kind of an outline for how to start thinking about pricing your items.
IF you are trying to enter your arts and crafts as sell-able items in the competitive market for the purposes of making an income from your efforts, that is. Not every hobby needs to be monetized.
But if you are monetizing it, you don't just say "it seeeeeems like i could sell this for $X" you do something like the rough equations i've laid out here, and you align it with your goals and projected progress, and you make decisions like "i'm going to make 30 more of these tigers" or at least "now that i know how to do it, i'm going to make a second tiger and see how long it takes me" with these things in mind so that you can be successful and competitive and earn a fair wage for your items.
