Imagine a "Star Trek: Lower Decks" style sitcom in the Stargate universe. Stargate: SG-47... the crew that follows up on all the really boring planets SG-1 goes to once and never again. They always debrief with Walter instead of the General. They annoyed the Nox once and now they show up to pull pranks on SG-47 in revenge. Minor Goa'ulds catch them and are depressed they're not SG-1 or someone more important so they just release them.

My notifications ate this ask; I don't know when it's from, but I'm just seeing it now. Please accept this totally unedited bullshit fic as my apology and thanks for how hard this ask made me laugh. ​A Soldier, a Linguist, a Botanist, and a Biologist Walk into a Ha'tak

Major Lissa Cannon emerges from the event horizon into the bright, clear sunlight of P4X-737. She takes a deep breath and immediately sneezes. "Great," she says.

Dr. Jess Abubakar passes her on the right, heading down the stone stairs of the gate platform without hesitation. "Better get used to it," he says with a cheerfulness that she doesn't-- and any reasonable person wouldn't-- share.

"Jess, I swear to God," Dr. Beth Rosenberg says as she follows him down the steps.

"You're just salty you have to help us collect samples," Jess counters, more affable than Cannon would have expected anyone to be before she actually started working with him.

Beside her, Dr. Chris Richardson just gives a wry smile before heading down the stairs after their teammates. Cannon sneezes again.

"It's the pollen!" Jess says as she joins the group. "Initial samples brought back by SG-1 indicate that it's at least twice as potent as anything we have on Earth."

"How is that a good thing," Cannon gripes even though she'd sat through the briefing and already listened to Jess and Bill Lee go on about how important it could prove to be.

"I mean, just think of the possibilities!" Jess says, more than happy to repeat himself. "We could synthesize new antihistamines, or even make existing ones more effective. We could develop new crops that are potentially more resistant to blights or unfavorable growing conditions."

"Yay," Beth says, drier than the climate on this planet has likely ever been.

"You're just mad because there are no indigenous people here to talk to," Cannon points out.

"You could talk to the plants," Jess says.

"Studies have proven that talking to plants encourages growth," Chris adds, soft-spoken as always.

"I'm not talking to the plants," Beth says.

"Why not?" Cannon asks. "With this much pollen in the air, after a few hours they might start talking back."

"Oof, like when SG-7 was on P8Q-984," Jess laughs. "That's not an experience I want to have for myself."

"Those were spores, not pollen," Chris corrects amiably as the team starts into the forested area beyond the field in which the gate sits.

"Sentiment's the same," Jess says.

Cannon hears a rustle in the undergrowth and raises her P-90, her team stopping immediately in defensive positions behind her. After a moment of nothing but birdsong and her own breathing, she relaxes. "Must've been an animal," she says.

"SG-1's initial exploration didn't indicate any indigenous animals on the ground," Beth says.

"Well, that's why we get their leftovers, because everything is just 'initial,'" Cannon points out. She takes the lead as they continue between the trees, rifle still ready in her hands just in case.

"Bloodthirsty squirrels is not on my extraterrestrial exploratory bucket list," Jess says.

"Yeah, mine neither," Cannon agrees. She's barely got the sentence out of her mouth when she hits a force field, face-first. "Motherfucker," she tries to say, a natural reaction, but the syllables come out muddled because her face is suddenly very numb. She drops to a knee and raises her rifle, looking for whatever danger has to be in the forest with them. Around her, her team drops the specimen cases they'd been carrying and raise their own weapons. They're not armed for this; SG-1's previous mission and the UAV surveys hadn't revealed anything dangerous enough to warrant coming through armed with anything more than Cannon's P-90, a couple of flash-bangs, and an assortment of 9mils and zats carried by her and her teammates. Except for Cannon, they're scientists, not soldiers.

"Lower your weapons," a voice commands from the trees.

"You lower your force field," Cannon calls back.

"I think not." Around them, Jaffa begin to materialize from the forest.

"Fuck," Cannon says.

The Jaffa strip them of their gear, tossing their vests, holsters, and packs in a careless pile on top of the specimen cases they'd dropped when the force field had initially gone up. They're surprisingly respectful about it, which Cannon almost laments because she's pissed off and ready to fight, even if she knows it's a fight she won't win. She watches their gear disappear from view in a flash of light as they're beamed up to a ship she knows must be waiting above.

Gold walls and a polished floor illuminated by dim lights materialize around them. Another group of Jaffa is waiting. One of their captors reports to a man Cannon assumes is his superior. She tries to pick of bits and pieces she recognizes from the language but doesn't get much.

"Wait," Beth says, "can you say that again? That's word isn't in the lexicon we've been developing."

The Jaffa looks at her sidelong in confusion before his superior barks an order.

"This way," he says. The Jaffa behind them push the team roughly forward.

"Yeah, I heard him," Cannon says, her face still numb and her words muddled, "relax."

They spend the next several hours sitting in a cell. Beth whips a notebook out of one of the pockets of her pants and starts making notes on the glyphs in their cell.

"Does that actually say anything?" Jess asks. "I've never been on a Goa'uld ship before."

A chorus of variants on "yeah, me neither" precede Beth's answer.

"It does, actually, though most of it just repeats. A lot of it is just vague, seemingly formulaic stories of someone's victories and conquering and blah blah blah, but the name has been chiseled out," she says, tapping a glyph that's clearly been destroyed deliberately.

Cannon turns her head against the wall from where she's sulking with her arms wrapped loosely around her knees. "Why?"

"My best guess? Whoever owns this ship now stole it from another Goa'uld and had their name erased. Think damnatio memoriae."

"Huh," Jess says, setting his hand of cards down to Chris's obvious annoyance. "But they kept the part about the victories?"

"Why not? Obviously they had someone spend all the time necessary to do this to the whole ship, so keeping the rest saved a hell of a lot of work. Plus, if they bested the guy this ship used to belong to, that's quite a flex." Beth shrugs and goes back to writing in her notebook. Jess picks up his cards again and Cannon can tell by the barest quirk of Chris's lips that they have the winning hand.

"You know what I'm thinking about right now?" Cannon says. "Mashed potatoes."

"Ugh, the mashed potatoes in the mess taste like plastic," Beth says without looking away from the wall.

"I know; once I start eating them, they're so disgusting I just can't stop myself. It's like the flavor gets grosser with every bite."

"They're not bad with the roast beef," Chris says.

"That's because the roast beef is the only palatable thing the mess serves besides jello," Jess points out.

"It was lemon chicken today," Cannon sighs. She rests her head against the wall again. "My vest had all my granola bars. What could these guys possibly want with us," she complains.

"Do you think they've realized that we're only number 47 because they want any potential enemies to think there are more SG teams than there really are?" Jess asks.

"I don't know," Cannon says stiffly, "but say that again a little louder and I'm sure they will."

Jess holds his hands up in placation, tipping his cards towards Cannon. Chris is about to destroy him with that hand.

"Well," Cannon sighs, "the good news is that I can feel my face again."

Heavy footfalls sound in the hallway and Cannon stands, shifting her weight to ease the stiffness in her legs. Beth hurriedly stuffs her notebook back in her pocket and Chris and Jess shove the cards into the pocket of Jess's pants.

"You will come with us," the Jaffa says.

"Sure," Cannon says as she leads her team after him. "I don't suppose you guys have any snacks on board this thing? You've got to eat, right?" He doesn't answer. "Didn't your mom ever teach you to share?"

The Jaffa ignores her and leads them into an open room with a throne at the fall wall. Ba'al surges to his feet as they enter. "Fool," he spits at the Jaffa beside him, who Cannon recognizes as the leader of the group that had captured them. "This isn't SG-1."

"My lord--"

"Who are you?" Ba'al interrupts.

"Major Lissa Cannon, leader of SG-47," she says, raising her chin.

"Forty-seven," Ba'al says in disbelief.

"We're a science team; we were studying the flora of P4X-737 when you so rudely interrupted."

Ba'al just looks at her. "You're scientists."

Jess raises his hand. "Doctor."

"Doctor," Chris agrees.

"Major," Cannon says with a shrug.

"Doctor," Beth says.

"I've seen this episode of M*A*S*H," Chris says.

"I did also once make a baking soda volcano for a sixth-grade science fair," Cannon adds.

Ba'al sits back on his throne, crossing one leg over the other and resting his elbows on the arms, looking the picture of a carefree megalomaniac.

"Bring them back to the surface," he orders the Jaffa with a lazy wave of his hand, without so much as raising his arm from the throne. "Finish studying your plants," Ba'al says, "I have no use for you."

"That's kind of rude," Cannon says.

The Jaffa drop them on the planet's surface and beam back up to the ship. Cannon pulls her vest off the pile, slings it over her shoulders, and pulls a granola bar out of the pocket. She rips it open and stuff it into her mouth, chewing as she zips her vest and secures her holsters around her legs.

"That was easier than I expected," Beth admits.

"Sometimes I think the only reason the Goa'uld try to capture SG teams is just because SG-1 pisses them off so much," Jess adds.

Cannon snorts at that. "Let's get our samples and haul it back to the gate before the mess runs out of mashed potatoes."

"You realize that's extremely unlikely, right?" Chris deadpans.

Cannon shrugs and stuffs the wrapper of her granola bar into her pocket. "Even so, let's get a move on."

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Review

It’s hard to get excited about a new Call of Duty game after 16 years of consecutive releases, but a bigger emphasis on stealth in Black Ops Cold War’s campaign and a couple of enjoyable new multiplayer modes prove that this annual franchise can still hang with the best.

While part of the Black Ops subseries, you don’t need to be familiar with the previous games to enjoy Cold War’s single-player campaign. Alex Mason, the protagonist from the first two Black Ops’ games returns for a few missions, but you’ll be playing as your own created character for most of the adventure. After an adrenaline-pumping opening chase sequence set in Turkey, you’ll get to choose your character’s gender, background, and two extra skills from a “psychological” profile. These skills include perks like extra health or faster reload speed. It’s a cool concept, but it doesn’t add much while on actual missions. 

Set mostly in 1981, Cold War sees your character working with the CIA to stop Perseus, a Soviet spy who has stolen nuclear secrets and is now threatening the stability of western Europe. Along the way, you’ll be joined by Mason and Russell Adler, a scarred CIA agent who looks exactly like Robert Redford. Somehow, it’s not him, though. I checked, double checked, and then looked it up again. Redford has nothing to do with the game, though the resemblance is uncanny. 

Developers Treyarch and Raven Software have done a fantastic job creating the game’s early ‘80s aesthetic, with fashion and office space seemingly lifted straight out of a movie from the era. File footage and a brief cameo from a very uncanny valley Ronald Reagan help further set the tone. Call of Duty isn’t exactly known for its soundtracks, but Cold War showcases a few big hits from the era, including Billy Squire’s “The Stroke” and Pat Benatar’s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot.” As if that weren’t enough to revive the decade of big hair and shoulder pads, Raven even managed to squeeze a few classic Activision games from the Atari 2600 into Cold War for good measure. 

While Cold War retains the more realistic, heavier gunplay of last year’s Modern Warfare reboot, the move away from active battlefields lends itself to some much-needed changes to the series’ usual formula. Many missions have a much greater emphasis on infiltration and stealth. Enemies can be taken hostage and used as shields, and hiding bodies in closets is critical to success during stealth missions. Sneaking around old Soviet bases with a silenced pistol at the ready results in a strong GoldenEye 007 vibe. I didn’t expect a Call of Duty game in 2020 to emulate the classic N64 shooter, but it works well here.

All of this culminates with one of the best missions in the series’ history: a two-part heist that begins with stealth section that can be completed in multiple ways, followed by a tense shootout and escape. It feels like this is the campaign mission in which Raven put most of its efforts, and it’s such a step above everything else in the campaign that it makes me wonder what the developers could do with the series if they were able to get off the biannual release treadmill and not have to meet such a tight deadline.

I don’t want to give too much of the story away, but I will say that it takes a bizarre hallucinatory left turn after the heist mission, and then in one of the most unoriginal moves in gaming history, steals BioShock’s big twist beat-for-beat. The gameplay remains enjoyable until the very end, but the last hour or so of Cold War’s story is especially disappointing because the rest of the story is so well told. I get it. This is Call of Duty. I don’t expect a Shakespearean narrative, but some originality would’ve been nice. At least the story includes the branching choices that last appeared in Black Ops II, though they feel much less consequential here. There are two distinct endings, but the choices you make during the campaign just affect some of the voiceovers.

Another issue I ran into with the campaign while playing the PC version was a bug where no matter what I did, I couldn’t trigger the ending cutscene for the early mission “Fracture Jaw.” Apparently it’s a problem quite a few players are having. After a quick Google search, I was able to resolve it by running scan and repair on the game’s files through the Battle.net launcher, but this is a major bug that never should have made it into the final release.

The campaign is also extremely short, even by Call of Duty standards. Accounting for the time I got stuck in “Fracture Jaw,” I was able to breeze through it in about five hours. Of course, many Call of Duty players don’t even touch single player, which is why I’m pleased to report that this year’s multiplayer release is solid, though it’s a little light on content at the moment, with only 10 maps available at launch, and two of those are exclusive to the new Fireteam mode.

The maps are well-designed, though. Thanks to improved ray-traced lighting effects, the neon-hued Miami map is easily the best looking of the bunch, and it features a good mix of interior and exterior sections in which to set up ambushes. Crossroads, a snow-covered map set in the forests of Uzbekistan, is another excellent map, with lots of perches for sniping and wide open areas you can drive snowmobiles through. But my favorite map is the large version of Armada, which is made up of multiple ships anchored in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. You travel between these ships on smaller boats and jet skis, which makes for plenty of unique encounters, but there’s also a lot of verticality. Once you get on top of the larger ships, you can pick off opponents below. 

The two big mode additions to multiplayer, Fireteam and VIP Escort, appeal to very different tastes. The 40-player Fireteam mode breaks off players into 10 squads of four players each in a mad dash to kill each other as quickly as possible for pieces of uranium. The uranium is then taken to one of several points around the map to set off dirty bombs. The first squad to 500 points wins. With so many different squads to keep track of, respawning players constantly parachuting in, and detonated dirty bombs irradiating parts of the map every few minutes, Fireteam is like a smaller, more chaotic version of Warzone. So it’s good, but like the rest of Cold War’s multiplayer, I wish there was more to it.

The other new multiplayer mode is the 6v6 VIP Escort. In each two-and-a-half minute round, one player from each team is randomly selected as the VIP, who is equipped only with a pistol, smoke grenade, and UAV. The rest of the team has to protect him as he makes his way to one of two evac points. The round ends when the VIP escapes or is killed, or when all members of the opposing team are killed. The first team to win four rounds takes the match. VIP Escort has an obvious Counter-Strike influence. It’s a lot faster-paced than most other Call of Duty modes, and I enjoyed the matches I played, but I’m not sure it has the staying power of Team Deathmatch or Domination.

Rounding out the Cold War package is the Zombies mode, which returns from Black Ops 4 after a one-year hiatus. The only map available at launch, “Die Maschine,” takes place in 1983 at a graffiti-covered abandoned Nazi bunker. “Die Maschine” is actually a reimagining of the first Zombies map from 2008’s World at War, but it’s a well-made level, starting with a large, open area, and then moving into the winding underground caverns we’ve all come to expect from the Zombies mode. There are also some very cool looking paranormal hijinks to trigger as the rounds progress. The map may not be completely original, but it’s a significant step up from the original release.

One welcome change to Zombies this year is that you can now play as your custom classes and operators from multiplayer, so you can jump into a match with much stronger weapons from the start instead of having to make do with a peashooter and work your way up to something more powerful. Thankfully, this doesn’t break the game either. It’s still very easy to get overwhelmed in the later waves if you’re not careful. My only complaint about Zombies is that I wish Treyarch had leaned into the ‘80s setting more and included content similar to the retro amusement park seen in 2016’s Infinite Warfare. I suppose there’s always hope we’ll see something like that added in an update. As of now, the only other thing Zombies has to offer is the twin-stick shooter Dead Ops 3, which is really only worth checking out for a few minutes.

If you’re burned out on Call of Duty, or never got into franchise to begin with, Cold War is not the game that’s going to change your mind. There are some rough edges here, particularly in the short campaign mode. The lack of variety in multiplayer is also disappointing. But the underlying gameplay and multiplayer progression system remain compelling. We will also raise the center audio frequency to 2000 Hz to try to escape any interference from voice transmissions. Turn on your RxID to guide Fldigi to the correct mode and audio frequency. If the RSID does not work, a 10-second tuning signal will help you manually tune to the correct audio frequency. MFSK16 requires precise tuning of the audio frequency for correct decoding. (Optional) Step 2: Adding a virtual drone.

Once granted access to the cloud, you can use your virtual drone’s vehicle ID and token to add it to the FlytNow dashboard.

Step 3: Creating a Mission Plan.

A mission plan lets you add a route for your drone. Considering you are testing a medical delivery system, you use the mission plan to define routes to all the medical centers you want to make deliveries.

To add a mission plan, click on Mission -> Add Mission. Give a name to your mission and click on Add Waypoints to begin defining your route. Clicking on the map will place a pin; this way you can place multiple pins.

In the above screenshot, we have defined a mission that tells a drone how to go to Palo Alto Health Care. Apart from defining a route, you can set the flight speed and a Finish Action. The Finish Action tells a drone what to do once it reaches the destination; you can set the following actions.

Step 4: Creating a pre-flight checklist.

This feature allows you to create a pre-flight checklist. In the case of a delivery operation, a checklist will ensure that a drone is configured properly before it is sent out on a mission.

To create a checklist, click on CHECKLIST and then Add to Checklist to add a checklist item. While adding a checklist item, you can also add a description.

We have created a checklist suited for drone delivery operations. You can create your own checklist.

Step 5: Setting up a geofence

A geofence allows you to set up a boundary for your operations. Once you set a boundary, FlytNow will not allow your drones to fly beyond the boundary.

You can set up a geofence by:

Going to the GEOFENCE section in the FlytNow dashboard where you should be able to see your drones as a list.

Click on the edit option available in front of your drone name.

Enable the Geofence radius by clicking on the button.

Set the Geofence Values as per your safety requirements, i.e Height, and Radius.

The Height is restricted to 500 meters and radius is restricted to 8000 meters.

Click on the Save button after entering the values.

The following image shows you how your dashboard will look after geofence is set successfully.

A geofence has two circles. The area between the circles is called a warning zone. Whenever a drone crosses the first circle, the system gives out a warning, but it will not let the drone go beyond the second circle.

While planning a mission, you can’t put a waypoint beyond the first circle.

Step 6: Turn on Live video feed (feature works with a real drone only).

You can access the video feed of a drone from the dashboard. This feature is useful when a drone is out for delivery. This way you can visually assess a flight mission.

Select a drone under the FLY tab. Now you can see the video feed on the top right corner.

You can also enable the multi-cam mode (refer to the above picture) that will allow you to view the video feed from all drones on a single screen.

Step 7: Share live drone location and video feed with a third party (feature works with a real drone only).

You can share live drone locations and video streams with anyone outside the FlytNow platform. This feature is useful especially when you want to share tracking information with a recipient which might include live video feed from the drone.

To initiate sharing click on the share button on the video panel

In the next dialog box click on Create new link.

Enter the email address of the person to whom you want to share the video.

Select the drones and your preferred options. You get the option to share both the map and the video.

The person with whom you have shared the live feed gets an email with a secure PIN. Tell him/her to click on View Operation and enter the secure PIN to start the live streaming.

Initiating a Drone Delivery

Once you are done with the basic setup, it is time to launch your first delivery mission. Consider a situation where you have received a delivery request from a nearby medical center, and you are about to initiate a launch.

Step 1: Launching a drone and selecting a mission.

Under the FLY tab select a drone (has to be online) and click on the launch icon in the bottom right corner.

You will be asked to select a flight mode. Select Mission. In the next window, you will see all your missions. Select a mission and click on start.

Step 2: Completing the pre-flight checklist and executing the mission.

Next, you have to complete the pre-flight checklist.

Once you are done with the checklist, hit Execute to begin your delivery.

Photographing the location

When making our way to the starting point, the weather changed and the sun became hidden behind clouds which allowed me to achieve the type of images I wanted for this body of work with an overcast dramatic look to the sky, which also helps with obtaining the documentary feel to the work.

For this location, I decided I would photograph everything at iso100 at f22 using a tripod and 2 second self timer, the same as what I did at Ynys-Y-Pandy mill at Cwmystradllyn earlier in the morning. I also brought the drone with me to capture any scenes which I find interesting and to add to the body of work. As I hadn’t previously been to this location before, I thought it would be best to bring all the equipment I have just in case. As mentioned in the previous post, the location was checked for flying the drone in terms of restricted airspace or weather conditions using the UAV Forecast and Drone Assist apps on my iPhone.

After parking the car in a suitable location, I decided to start walking the path. The first quarter of a mile of the old railway track is a hard rocky base which has been used for access into the forest, but after that the track became more boggy with only a path where a 4x4 and walkers have created through use. 

Throughout the walk to the viaduct, I stopped to take photographs of the route along with smaller details such as the surrounding landscape as this is something I felt is worth including because the people who would have travelled on this route would have seen the surrounding landscape also. I like how some are more intimate than others with some with clear traces and some without any at all which allows the viewer to question what is in the photograph and what is its history or meaning. 

I do feel some images are quite similar which I can narrow down after time once I photograph various locations, but at the moment I feel its good to have various options which I can sort through. 

I was pleased that the sky had changed to an overcast day with a variety of density in the clouds to add to the image which I feel makes the images better than if it was blue skies. I also think that the 5x4 ratio with this type of sky creates a documentary feel to the images and increases the aesthetics and viewing experience of the images.

Above are the images captured using the drone of the viaduct. I really enjoy using it in remote and hard to photograph areas as it allows me to achieve shots that wouldn’t be possible and allow the viewer to see and gain a different viewing experience and perspective of the location. I will still carry on capturing drone photographs and see if it will lead as a different path, either as a future project or even just keep them as archived images.

I am really pleased with how these images have turned out and now I have something to work with as the first location were too obvious in terms of industrial history, but this one is more subtle and more unique in my opinion.

Trying out the SAFE Stack

If you’re using Visual Studio Community 2017, make sure you’ve got F# support included. I double-checked under Individual components. You can run the VS2017 installer multiple time and add and remove stuff without breaking things, so don’t worry. If you are using other versions of VS, check here http://ift.tt/1fhIFeE to get the right download for your machine. If you’re using Visual Studio Code, you’ll want the Ionide F# plugin for Code.

Once I had node and yarn installed, it was easy to try out the sample app and get it running locally with “build run.” It uses DotNetWatcher, so you can just keep it running in the background and work on your code and it’ll recompile and restart as you go.
