Off I pop
A little tribute to my dad there. ; )
Hap’piraki once again! Here we are at my final day as a moderator here (temporarily, at least), so...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
(Oh, jeez... What am I supposed to say here? Where’s a cue card when you need one?)
So, to begin with, let me reiterate that I’m planning to be gone until July -- that may change, but that’s the plan for now -- and by “gone” I don’t mean I won’t be around, just that I won’t be answering letters. I’ll still check in every now and then to make sure things are going all right, and I’ll continue posting the remaining character essays that have been requested. This won’t include any new requests you may have, though, so you’ll either have to ask a different mod or wait until I get back for that.
In the meantime, I’d like to share a few short things about myself, and how Ace Attorney and Ask Ace Attorney have, in my opinion, changed my life for the better.
...Beeeeeeeeeeeeeelow the cut.
So, as I mentioned in a previous post, I’ve been dealing with some serious struggles in recent days. Oddly enough, most of them haven’t been directly related to the pandemic, the political tension, or anything else 2020 brought with it. For me, the biggest struggles have been internal ones, most of which had to do with my self-confidence.
I’m going to borrow a quote from the Mod (writing as Dahlia Hawthorne, of all people): “When a person speaks, they say whatever is on their mind. When a person writes, they are allowed to revise and rework. Literature is the distillation of a person’s intentions into even a single sentence.” In other words (no pun intended), writing lets a person say things in the most polished way they can, without having to worry about things like stuttering, second-guessing, or sounding insincere. That’s the version of me that you get here.
In the real world, I’m as human as anyone else: dealing with things like stress, anger, self-doubt, depression, anxiety, worry, lack of motivation, etc. I’d like to say that I deal with these flaws as best as humanly possible, but that isn’t the case a lot of the time. In the 30+ years I’ve been alive, I’ve been guilty (no pun intended) of letting my emotions get the best of me, giving up on things too easily, wasting time lamenting the past, and treating myself worse than Franziska treats Gumshoe. I can’t claim to have been very nice to everyone else I’ve met, either.
The point of this post isn’t to whine about my shortcomings, though. See, out of all the demons I’ve had to face, one of the worst has been the idea that I can’t do anything well enough for it to make any real difference in the world, and never will be able to. I hope you haven’t had to struggle with this idea yourself, but if so, you have my sympathy.
Thankfully, I happened to discover a video game series and a fan-made blog that helped me realize how untrue that idea was. Which ones am I referring to? I’ll give you one guess.
Like many people do when they suddenly gain some new responsibility (even if it’s something they like), when I first joined the blog, I struggled with a thing called “impostor syndrome,” which is, according to the internet, “an internal experience of believing that you are not as competent as others perceive you to be.” Sure, I’d done some comedic writing for fun before, and I'd known about Ace Attorney and its characters for quite a while, but was I really qualified to continue the Ace Admin and the Mod’s labor of love? And what would it mean if I wasn’t? Over 11,000 people (minus some bots) were reading what I wrote, after all, so could I continue making the blog enjoyable for all of them?
(Trick question -- satisfying everyone is an impossible feat, it turns out.)
Questions like that bugged me consistently, but thanks to the love of Ace Attorney I shared with the fan base, and the creativity afforded by its fun characters and their incredible stories, I was able not only to power through the challenges of running a popular blog, but to help make it into something even bigger than it was before, as well as gaining some interesting insights from people about a wide range of topics: the law, morality, science, religion, history, politics, philosophy...
...hairstyles...
...and so on. I'm not sure what I was expecting to happen when I started out, but I sure didn’t see anything like that coming.
So, in summary, this blog and the series that inspired it didn’t just help me to maintain a healthy self-image, which is something every person needs; it’s been a huge part of what kept me sane these last few years. Athena and her psychotherapy may not be real, but being able to strengthen my writing, artistic, and comedic skills here -- and to delight so many people while doing it -- might have been the closest I could possibly get to it.
And that, my friends, is where you come in. I’ve said it plenty of times before, but here it is again: this blog couldn’t possibly exist without you. Whatever reason you may have had for writing a letter to me, a different moderator, or the character of your choice -- whether it was curiosity, love, criticism, or just for the heck of it -- I want you to know that it played a part in reminding me that I, like everyone else, shortcomings and all, am capable of making a difference in the world, even if it’s just for a few Phellow Phoenix Phans. Needless to say, I’ve appreciated every last bit of it.
My hope is to be able to do something similar to this in the future, possibly on a larger scale (what exactly, I don’t know), but even if that doesn’t come to pass, I’ll always be grateful for the positive impact I was able to make here thanks to your interaction, support, and willingness to appreciate the genius of Ace Attorney alongside me. I repeat myself, but you guys are awesome. Never stop being that way.
And yeah, I realize this isn’t my final goodbye. I just thought I should treat it like it was just in case. ; )
Anyway, it’s time for one last thing this post would be incomplete without: a heartfelt...
I’ll see you ‘round, folks!

Confessions Of A Fic Writer
Hey guys, I’m taking a break from editing my latest Larry fic (MrsStylinson on ao3) and I need a distraction so I decided to conduct my own interview...of myself. But it’s basically a quiz and anyone can reblog and use :) Tag your fave authors if you wish.
1. Fandom(s)/Main ships(s). 1D. Larry. I have others but this is the only one I feel compelled to write about.
2. Favourite trope. It’s probably a tie between enemies to lovers and friends to lovers. So I guess that probably means my true favourite is slow burn!
3. Favourite fic idea that you’re yet to write. Mongrels to Men. Sort of like ladette to lady or ladettes to ladies or whatever it's called. So like Louis would be a promiscuous party boy type with like substandard manners. And for whatever reason his mum signs him up and Harry is like his mentor and has to teach him to be all posh and stately and Louis just makes fun of him and ends up teaching Harry to loosen up. And it involves some kind of makeover scene/bit
4. Favourite one of your fics. This is also tough because I’m so critical and I hate everything I write hahah. But maybe my Bridget Jones’ Diary AU? You Drive Me Crazy (But It Feels Alright). I feel like that one had a more fleshed out voice. The characters were well formed (possibly because of all the help I had from the original). My drunk in love fic comes close and I have a lot of love for two of my WIP’s when I don’t think about the lack of attention they’ve garnered but yeah, basically I hate everything.
4. Favourite fic by someone else/Fave author. I am making this so tough on myself because I have so many favourites. @cherrystreet’s bachelor fic (This Wicked Game) is a huge one. I never get sick of it. I love @all-these-larrythings (reaverview dreamer on ao3) and the medium fics by deathchamber on ao3. There’s so many more: (whoknows on ao3 whose tumblr I found but can’t manage to link or @louiswolves: grapenight on ao3 whose fic featuring a cat is an absolute must.) But I digress.
5. The first fic I ever read: I don’t remember this. I think it was a supernatural one and I wasn’t too keen but after being introduced to a YouTube compilation of Larry, I read a fic where Louis played soccer and Harry was a popstar and Louis proposes at a game at the end (I cannot find the name of it. I don’t know if it’s been deleted or if I’m an idiot because I’m pretty sure it’s a hugely popular fic.) I remember bawling my eyes out and after that, I never really went back to het romance. Not long after I started writing myself.
6. If someone could write YOU your dream fic, what would it be? I think it would definitely be a slow burn (surprise) with plenty of angst, plenty of fluff and plenty of smut towards the end. I would LOVE to read another bachelor fic but I just love really specific ones, maybe cause it’s something I struggle to write. I love fics based on movies or a really particular area of knowledge.
7. If you had to sum up your writing style in three words, what would they be? Descriptive. Emotional. Angsty. Is that the same as emotional? Okay. Descriptive, emotional and....poetic. It was really hard to come up with positive ones tbh.
8. What is your favourite thing about being a fic writer? The appreciation from my readers. When someone lets me know that something I wrote connected with them or made them smile, I feel like I have a very special power that not everyone has.
9. What is your least favourite thing about being a fic writer? The pressure. The insecurity. The hours spent working without pay hahah. Just kidding. I do enjoy it and I’m not skilled enough to get paid for it anyway.
10. If you could give any advice to your past self or to people thinking of trying out fic writing, what would it be? Well I’m not really qualified but i’m interviewing myself as if I were a success so, to my past self, I would say...stop trying to find a million different ways to say blue or green eyes. (I’m still guilty of this but I’m getting better.) Edit more and use flowery language less. Find active verbs and metaphors instead of more adjectives and adverbs. Remember to show not tell!! To other future writers, I’d say remember to write what you love, not what you think other people will love. This is how the best stuff comes out. If other people don’t like it, remember that writing, like art, thrives on your sole purpose/happiness and wastes away when you’re dissastisfied. Also, inspiration is endless! I often get writer’s block but I’m slowly learning to look for cues in new places.
11. What inspires you to write? And what other forms or genres do you write in? I’m inspired to write by the complexity of human emotion and human struggle. Having suffered from some illness or another, be it physical or mental, since I was a young teen, I am always conscious of our ability to survive and for me, there is no greater way to honour my own survival than to follow my passion and write romance. I mostly write romance but I have dabbled in thrillers and dirty realism. I also write in the form of poetry and short opinion pieces aka rants.
12. Why do you think fanfiction has become such a phenomenon?
think it’s because we live in an age of information overload where we’re always able to get our hands on more of the things we love. However, when it comes to characters, those die with the final line in a novel or the final line in a television series. Fanfiction resurrects them. As for fics based on real people, I think it’s just a form of escapsim. Sometimes you see two people who seem like they’d be absolutely perfect together and the fantasy is more enjoyable than the reality.

Basics Of Pop Music
Modern folks music refers to a wide variety of genres that emerged in the mid 20th century and afterwards which were associated with traditional folk music Beginning within the mid-twentieth century a brand new form of standard folks music evolved from conventional folks music. Large, like Salimpoor, says that this distinction in choice is because of how our neurons are wired together, which in flip is based on our personal, personal historical past of listening to or performing music. Rhythm is all about predictability, he says, and our predictions about music start forming from a reasonably early age onward. He factors to the work of Erin Hannon at the College of Nevada who discovered that babies as younger as eight months old already tune into the rhythms of the music from their very own cultural setting. Whether or not you agree with Stanley's personal opinions, his ardour is undeniable. When describing the music that has really moved him, be it a Seashore Boys tune, a Motown monitor, a punk anthem, a pioneering techno observe, www.magicaudiotools.com or a 70s bubblegum pop song, his eloquence and unabashed enthusiasm are infectious, drawing the reader in. Stanley is each professional critic and professional musician, but he's additionally at occasions merely a fan, desperate to share his discovery of pleasure with others. One may not agree with Stanley's private opinions, however any music fan is aware of the giddy rush that only comes when getting lost in a favorite tune. Regardless of your musical choice, that may be a universal feeling that this e book ultimately seeks to have fun, and in that it does a exceptional job. Musicians making the move from songs to cinema is a dodgy one which hasn't gone properly for some of her predecessors (Rihanna, I love you, but literally your entire films suck), but Gaga's funding in her debut lead efficiency is so sturdy that she's practically unrecognisable beneath it. That's not a gimmicky tackle her much-discussed ‘stripped again' look, it is a testimony to her skill as a sincere actor. She switches up all the pieces, from her conversational mannerisms to her distinct fashion of performing, to take us away from her personal pop narrative - even when Ally's story bares some glaring resemblances to her personal. Streaming companies are a beast that needs constant feeding. Youthful hip-hop artists, already accustomed to offering sites like SoundCloud with a relentless stream of mixtapes and features, have adjusted to its demands more quickly than artists from other genres, and have thrived accordingly. At the coronary heart of rap's streaming dominance is something extra ephemeral: Some songs simply stream better than others, for reasons that no one can really clarify but. Hip-hop streams higher than other forms of mainstream music, and trap music streams better than different varieties of hip-hop. However radio is certainly sputtering out. I myself only hearken to high-40 radio when I'm in a Lyft, and I am fascinated by how related every little thing sounds: same tinny manufacturing, same rap breaks, identical millennial whoop. Plus, playlists are narrower than ever, so the thought of radio as a discovery system is long gone. I assume children are discovering new issues through Spotify or Apple Music, whose algorithms and daily discovery playlists are scarily good at predicting what I am going to get pleasure from. Nonetheless, these things only collect information, and only reply with knowledge: more songs in the key of the songs you do not skip via, with the identical modulations and vocal model. We're all getting pushed deeper into our personal little corners. What you see before you is a list that I hope might be learn as an intervention. Almost 50 girls who play a task in NPR compiled and voted on this listing. It options albums by artists who determine as female — together with some by mixed-gender bands, like Fleetwood Mac and X, that, modern Pop Music in our view, relied on ladies's creativity for their spark. These albums have been released between 1964, the year The Beatles invaded America and set in motion what can be called the "classic album era," and 2016, when Beyoncé arguably ushered in a brand new period with her "visual album" Lemonade. The purpose is to offer a view of widespread music history with women's work on the center. The record does not represent an "alternate historical past." It stands for music historical past, touching upon every significant trend, social situation, set of sonic innovations, and new avenue for self-expression that in style music has intersected in the past fifty years. Though Schlager music is a part of the pop tradition, it occupies a special, considerably devisive area of interest; people are likely to either adore it or hate it. But then there's straightfoward pop music, usually viewed as more palatable and widely liked. A classic instance of this is singer Herbert Grönemeyer. Although many outside of Germany know him only from his function in the film Das Boot," he is also essentially the most successful artist in Germany, with a career that, to date, spans 44 years. It typically takes us the longest to stop punishing the merely good artists for not being geniuses, but ultimately we do — Hall & Oates just received into the Rock Hall of Fame , as an illustration, however a decade in the past folks were nonetheless snickering at their Nineteen Eighties blue-eyed soul-pop, little question in shame over having favored it for some time. I wonder if we will study to skip that center step? I've admired you for having the maturity to attend to the communal virtues of Mumford and Sons and other neo-folks bands I discover icky, for example. I think I dislike them partly as a result of I grew up with Nineteen Seventies Catholic folks-guitar lots, so such jangly uplift choral music strikes me as oppressively naïve. I am interested on this article not a lot for the specifics of the gear and the plugins, however fairly just out of sheer awe on the complexity and nuance of the monitor's soundscape. My cadre of pop-oriented music lecturers likes to say that the creativity in recordings lies not in their melodies and the chords essentially, but in their timbre and area. Call Me Perhaps" is an excellent working example. Its melody and chords are enjoyable, however not exactly groundbreaking. But the monitor leaps out of the audio system at you, demanding your consideration, managing both to pound you with sonic drive and intrigue you with quiet element. Whether you need your attention grabbed in this method is a matter of style. I occur to love the song, however even when it isn't your cup of tea, the craft behind it bears some desirous about.
The historical past of Popular Music hardly qualifies as a precise science. It is a retrospective analysis of events that focuses on the underlying forces or common signs in the overwhelming manufacturing of music data, ignoring nuances and aspect-effects to grasp a understandable construction. It is because (standard) music is much from a static phenomenon: it is a consistently evolving, reworking, large organism. Almost by no means has a music style suddenly emerged as a surprising revolution without any trace or evolution in the past. All of them have naturally developed, mutated, merged, or turn out to be (theoretically) extinct. Solely the previous could be examined of this pure, organic network.

1,2, multiples of 5, 27
1. What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get? In BNHA? bakudeku. i don’t think it makes sense as a popular ship in the -manner- it is portrayed. I like it in a certain way! it’s just…. it’s one of those things where it’s like ‘you guys arent responsible enough to have this’umm…. im guessing this is more focused on popular pairings. hm. Shigadabi is like that for me too, on both ends. And Endmight. Todo/Inasa. There’s a few ships in BNHA that make me feel this way tbqh. Highest quotient of feeling confused by shipsThe fact kiibo’s biggest ship is kiibo/ouma. ouma is like. Really Mean to kiibo. not in a playful way either. I don’t even like. understand the fun part of that dynamic.Claptrap/Glad0s, because even in the Poker Night where it’s portrayed it makes the characters miserable. For me, it’s not fun unless it makes those two happier because they’re already both kind of miserable in their canons. Plus it was more like an uncomfortable joke in Poker Night anyway.Honestly? Not anything against it even, but I don’t get the popularity of Zoro/Sanji. Like, why it’s so big dynamic wise. I just dont get the vibe.Frisk/Sans, aside from the (obvious) issues I have with it, I just don’t understand the popularity. I think it might come from treating Frisk as a self insert? But the vibe of the game is not very romantic in that regard.2. Are there any popular fandom OTPs you only BroTP?For me this is a bit hard, because the line between romantic and bromantic doesn’t seem to be a big one. It’s a bit hard for me to parse, realistically. I feel romantic as a label encompasses many different types of relationships… and even in relationships I -prefer- as platonic, I can often support some romantic art too.But anyway, Frisk/Sans. This one is for obvious reasons. A lot of Frisk ships are like that, tbqh. Kirishima + Mina, Todo + MomoTho I use a ship tag for them, Mob + Tsubomi tbqh.Tavros + Gamzee… lol. Team Charge tooAlso I can accept a onesided Flowey/Asriel > Pap, but if it’s returned it’s weird for me bc I see Flowey as so young. Also even tho I ship them as an ot3, for me with Ko + Hinata + Nanami, its more like Hinata is romantically involved w both and Nanami and Ko are like… QPPsKurapika and Pairo actually? I don’t object to past crushes or w.e, but I interpret them as strictly just friends.5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?Johnrose. Realistically, somewhat Spacetime.4chan, Todomomo.I’m trying to cling to it bc as a dynamic i dug it but the amedot fans are fuckin mean sometimes.Cliche, but zuko/katara. I don’t mind those three as an ot3 but most zutara fans are mean to aang so I just…. have a distaste for it now. Aang’s my boy10. Most disliked arc? Why?The final two chapters of DR1 were not very fun for me because everyone I cared about died.Digimon S2′s enjoyability did not necessarily come from it being very good. I like it but plot holes.I really really did not enjoy the School Trip Arc in BNHA outside of the fact that like… Kouta exists15. Unpopular opinion about the manga/show?3 on SU:1. Amethyst was more in the wrong than people are willing to admit in ‘Too Far’.2. I think that SU is a good show even if it has occasional issues.3. Pearl is a good character2 on Digimon S2:1. I hated Daisuke from Digimon S2 for a long time and only recently do I not feel pure hatred when I look at him.2. Ken’s arc, while satisfying on an emotional level bc of his redemption, is not well written1 on Haikyuu:1. They should’ve let Oikawa at least beat Ushijima instead of giving that match to Karasuno to make them more ‘awesome’1 on BNHA1. Horikoshi has to have some of the teachers learn how to properly mediate Bakugou and Deku, or stop forcing them to work together. I’m tired of Deku performing all the emotional labour in that relationship, and trying to get Bakugou to work with him only to be physically assaulted. again. and again. Also everyone in that manga acts like it’s Deku’s equal responsibility to force Bakugou to work with him when Bkg has only ever been mean to Deku… he ends up doing 90% of the work…20. What is the purest ship in the fandom?Haha that’s a hard thing to qualify - in BNHA, I think tododeku. I think it’s the most pure thing I earnestly ship. Kenhina for haikyuu I guess, it’s one of the few relationships in that series built on mutual adoration. Saikiibo.Alphyne and Connverse are like that too actually I think. Very emotionally encouraging relationships.25. How would you end XXX/Would you change the ending of XXX?I would have ended Walking Dead much much much much much much sooner.I wish Digimon Tamers hadn’t ended so abruptly, and Impmon got more time with his tamers.27. Least shippable character? Shigaraki’s really hard to ship because of the people around him and his current emotional position.Papyrus and Luffy can be in QPPs for me but I don’t actually ship them with anyone. Same with how I feel about Katniss. You could say that’s true of a lot of aro characters, but there’s some aro characters who I feel would be interested in trying relationships regardless. I feel for characters like Papyrus and Luffy we see them basically say…. they’re not interested in that kind of thing

Horror movie recommendations
This list was originally posted in 2017 but has been updated for Halloween 2018.
I’ve been compiling this list for months and thought what better time to post it than October just in time for Halloween? Below is 50+ horror movie recommendations and a smaller list at the end of non-recommendations.
Some general info:
This is a completely subjective list of my personal favourites and I’m not saying these are the best horror movies ever, since there’s still a tonne of horror movies out there that I haven’t watched and everyone’s preferences are different.
My general tastes lean more towards the slasher, psychological, supernatural/paranormal and thriller/mystery sub-genres, which this list will reflect.
Not a fan of found-footage, sci-fi, monster (including vampires, zombies, werewolves etc.) or virus sub-genres, so you won’t see many movies that fall under these categories.
I haven’t seen many of the ‘classic’ horrors pre-dating the 70′s, so there won’t be many included.
All rec’s include the title, year, genre, main cast, summary, IMDb rating and a personal overview (none of which contain any spoilers).
Movies with asterisks are ones I consider must-see’s.
At the end there’s also a small list of movies I advise avoiding and/or that have a better reputation than I think they deserve.
Amityville Horror (2005)
Type: Paranormal/Haunted house/Possession
Starring: Ryan Reynolds & Melissa George
Summary: Newlyweds are terrorized by demonic forces after moving into a large house that was the site of a grisly mass murder a year before.
IMDB rating: 6/10
This is your standard haunted house/possession film, but I think the acting from Ryan and Melissa is strong and since it’s based on a true story, it’s kind of chilling.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)*
Type: Slasher/Supernatural
Starring: Heather Langenkamp & Robert Englund
Summary: Several people are hunted by a cruel serial killer who kills his victims in their dreams. While the survivors are trying to find the reason for being chosen, the murderer won’t lose any chance to kill them as soon as they fall asleep.
IMDB rating: 7.5/10
A Nightmare on Elm Street is an absolute classic and a must-see for any horror fan. Admittedly, on my recent re-watch I found it more comedic than anything else, but Freddy Krueger still stands out to me as being one of the most terrifying serial killers from a movie. Freddy’s back-story adds to his creepiness and the idea of being murdered in your dreams is something that’ll probably keep you up at night, particularly if it’s your first time watching.
A Quiet Place (2018)*
Type: Sci-Fi
Starring: Emily Blunt & John Krasinski
Summary: In a post-apocalyptic world, a family is forced to live in silence while hiding from monsters with ultra-sensitive hearing.
IMDB rating: 7.7/10
A suspenseful and heart-wrenching movie following a family’s survival in a post apocalyptic world. Along with Hush, this is the only horror I’ve seen to include a deaf character, which sets the entire mood for the movie in which the family need to out-wit monsters with super hearing. By far one of the best horror movies to come out in recent years.
Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)
Type: Supernatural
Starring: Brian Cox & Emile Hirsch
Summary: A father and son, both coroners, are pulled into a complex mystery while attempting to identify the body of a young woman, who was apparently harboring dark secrets.
IMDB rating: 6.8/10
What I like about this movie is that the idea behind it is quite unique and slightly steps away from the traditional slasher/possession/cult sub-genres we see a lot of within horror. It’s set in a morgue which instantly sets the tone for the entire movie. The build-up is somewhat slow but trust me, shit will hit the fan. The face of Jane Doe will haunt you forever and there is something inexplicably terrifying about a dead body having the power to wreak havoc, because how the hell do you stop it?
The Boy (2016)
Type: Thriller/Psychological
Starring: Lauren Cohan & Rupert Evans
Summary: An American nanny is shocked that her new English family’s boy is actually a life-sized doll. After she violates a list of strict rules, disturbing events make her believe that the doll is really alive.
IMDB rating: 6/10
I didn’t expect to like this one, but gave it a try and was pleasantly surprised. It’s not particularly scary, more tense and somewhat creepy (if you’re like me and dolls give you the heebie jeebies). Lauren Cohan is amazing as the lead and there’s a twist at the end that you just won’t see coming.
The Bye Bye Man (2017)
Type: Psychological
Starring: Douglas Smith & Lucien Laviscount
Summary: Three friends stumble upon the horrific origins of a mysterious figure they discover is the root cause of the evil behind unspeakable acts.
IMDB rating: 4.3/10
I’m genuinely surprised at how low the rating is for this movie and how many bad reviews it has. Is it the best horror movie ever? No, not at all. But is it worth watching? Yeah, definitely. I went in with low expectations but it managed to keep me hooked until the end. The psychological elements in it are what make it so interesting to me. You never quite know what’s real and what’s not and I feel like the idea behind it is slightly different than the general ones that are overused. There’s definitely some jump scare moments in there and the concept behind The Bye Bye Man is very interesting (although more back-story and explanation to how and why he came to be could’ve improved it). The biggest flaw I can think of, which I can only assume is the reason for the low ratings, is that the acting is pretty mediocre and the characters are one dimensional. But for me that wasn’t much of an issue since the plot was interesting enough to keep me watching.
The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
Type: Psychological
Starring: Chris Hemsworth & Kristen Connolly Summary: Five friends go for a break at a remote cabin, where they get more than they bargained for, discovering the truth behind the cabin in the woods.
IMDB rating: 7/10
The ending of this film is slightly “eh” to me and gets a little out of control, but I still rate it as being a generally good movie. The cabin isn’t what you expect and it will definitely play with your head.
Carrie (2013)
Type: Supernatural
Starring: Chloe Grace Mortez & Judy Greer Summary: A shy girl, outcast by her peers and sheltered by her religious mother, unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.
IMDB rating: 5.9/10
This is a remake of the 1976 original and I know remakes generally aren’t popular or well-liked, but I enjoyed this. I haven’t seen the original so perhaps my opinion would be different if I had, but Chloe Mortez does a fantastic job as Carrie, and you won’t know whether to hate her or love her.
Case 39 (2009)
Type: Psychological/Supernatural
Starring: Renée Zellweger & Ian McShane Summary: A social worker fights to save a girl from her abusive parents, only to discover that the situation is more dangerous than she ever expected.
IMDB rating: 6.2/10
Renée Zellweger is a fantastic actress and seeing her name on any movie is usually a good sign (excluding Texas Chainsaw Massacre). Her performance in this movie is great and the little girl Lillith will freak you out, because evil children are always more chilling than evil adults. Kind of has an ‘Orphan’ vibe, which is probably why I like it.
Child’s Play (1988)*
Type: Slasher/Supernatural
Starring: Catherine Hicks & Chris Sarandon Summary: A single mother gives her son a much sought after doll for his birthday, only to discover that it is possessed by the soul of a serial killer.
IMDB rating: 6.5/10
I feel like this movie isn’t as popular as I’d expect it to be amongst horror fans and I do kind of understand why. The idea that a doll would be able to over-power and kill a fully grown adult is ludicrous (and hilarious), but nonetheless this movie is a classic for the slasher genre. It’s wacky, kooky and out there, but it’s supposed to be. Chucky is a comedic killer with personality, which is a nice change from the usual faceless, voiceless, killers that have no back-story or depth and just go around with a knife stabbing people. It probably will make you laugh more than a horror movie should, but give it a try if you haven’t already. And if you like the first one, there’s 5 more movies to watch. None are as good as the first and when it gets to the fourth and fifth installments - Bride of Chucky (1998) and Seed of Chucky (2004), it gets incredibly silly, but I still got a kick out of watching them. If you’re looking for a movie that will genuinely scare and horrify you, this franchise really isn’t the right way to go, but it will make you laugh with it’s dark humor and it incorporates just enough gore to qualify as a horror of sorts.
Circle (2015)
Type: Mystery/Drama
Starring: Allegra Masters & Aimee McKay Summary: Held captive and faced with their imminent executions, fifty strangers are forced to choose the one person among them who deserves to live.
IMDB rating: 6/10
This is another on this very long list that was much better than I expected it to be. The premise is interesting and gripped me from the beginning. It keeps you in suspense throughout, but the ending is underwhelming and there’s room for improvement. However, overall this is a relatively enjoyable viewing experience which poses many questions about humanity, morality and gets the viewer questioning what they would do in the same situation and how far we would go to survive.
The Conjuring (2013) & The Conjuring 2 (2016)*
Type: Paranormal/Haunted house/Posession
Starring: Patrick Wilson & Vera Farmiga Summary: Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse.
IMDB rating: 7.5/10
The Conjuring movies are by far some of the best in the genre. Aside from the fact that Vera Farmiga is amazing and I love her, both movies have a strong cast of characters that make it easy to connect to the families involved as well as Ed and Lorraine. The stories are well written, there’s lots of jump-scare moments and the fact that both movies are based on true stories taken from the biographies of the real Ed and Lorraine Warren adds to the fear factor. I’m generally not easy to scare, but these two did get to me. Also, after you’ve watched them, research the true stories they’re based on, it’ll have much more of an impact.
Don’t Breathe (2016)
Type: Psychological
Starring: Stephen Lang & Jane Levy
Summary: Hoping to walk away with a massive fortune, a trio of thieves break into the house of a blind man who isn’t as helpless as he seems.
IMDB rating: 7.2/10
I actually walked in on my parents watching this one day and found myself rooted to the sofa, unable to stop watching. It’s very, very tense, so much so that I actually stopped breathing myself in parts! Let’s just say that being blind certainly isn’t a hindrance to this guy.
Don’t Hang Up (2016)
Type: Psychological
Starring: Gregg Sulkin & Garrett Clayton
Summary: An evening of drunken prank calls becomes a nightmare for a pair of teenagers when a mysterious stranger turns their own game against them…with deadly consequences.
IMDB rating: 5.7/10
I watched on a whim, not expecting to like it, but I did. It will keep you engaged and the anti slowly increases bit by bit. There’s also a motive for the person on the other end of the phone which you won’t necessarily see coming.
Emelie (2015)
Type: Thriller/Psychological
Starring: Sarah Bolger & Carly Adams
Summary: A couple’s replacement babysitter turns out to be more than they bargained for when she subjects their kids to a series of twisted activities.
IMDB rating: 5.4/10
This is another I decided to watched on a whim, mostly because I saw Sarah Bolger’s face, but I actually ended up enjoying it. It’s not really that scary, but is creepy in parts and kept me hooked until the end. Once again, there’s a motive and reason behind her actions, which is always more interesting than someone just doing something because they can or because they’re bored.
Final Destination (2000)*
Type: Psychological/Supernatural
Starring: Devon Sawa & Ali Larter
Summary: After a teenager has a terrifying vision of him and his friends dying in a plane crash, he prevents the accident only to have Death hunt them down, one by one.
IMDB rating: 6.7/10
I’m pretty sure everyone has seen or at least heard of Final Destination. Again, not necessarily a horror, but still has it’s moments and is a classic. Obviously, there are 5+ Final Destination movies now, which are all good, but the first is definitely the best. What I love most about these movies is how creative and unique the deaths are. You never know how the next person will die, but you know it’s gonna be epic.
Freddy vs. Jason (2003)
Type: Slasher/Supernatural
Starring: Robert Englund & Ken Kirzinger
Summary: Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees return to terrorize the teenage population. Except this time, they're out to get each other, too.
IMDB rating: 5.8/10
Don’t let the slightly low rating put you off. This is one of my guilty pleasure faves. Combining two of the most infamous slasher killers in the world and the result is rather satisfying. Just like A Nightmare on Elm Street, this isn’t a movie that particularly takes itself seriously. It’s a fun ride and great to see Freddy and Jason go head to head in a bloody stand off.
Get Out (2017)*
Type: Psychological/Thriller
Starring: Daniel Kaluuya & Allison Williams
Summary: It’s time for a young African American to meet with his white girlfriend’s parents for a weekend in their secluded estate in the woods, but before long, the friendly and polite ambience will give way to a nightmare.
IMDB rating: 7.8/10
I watched this after hearing good things about it and certainly wasn’t disappointed. Not necessarily what I’d class as a horror, but certainly a thriller and boy, oh boy, did this give me the creeps. The tactics that are used are so subtle and not in your face but so effective. The story will go in a direction you just will not predict (trust me) and will probably make you a little reluctant to meet your future in-laws haha.
Gothika (2003)
Type: Psychological/Supernatural
Starring: Halle Berry & Robert Downey Jr.
Summary: A repressed female psychiatrist wakes up as a patient in the asylum where she worked, with no memory of why she is there or what she has done.
IMDB rating: 5.8/10
This movie isn’t necessarily the scariest, but has a strong cast with Halle Berry, Robert Downey Jr. and Penelope Cruz and will play with your mind, particularly in the beginning. There’s an element of crime/mystery as Halle Berry’s character tries to piece together how/why she came to be in the asylum and who murdered her husband, which adds to the intrigue.
The Green Inferno (2013)
Type: Gory
Starring: Lorenza Izzo & Ariel Levy
Summary: A group of student activists travels to the Amazon to save the rain forest and soon discover that they are not alone, and that no good deed goes unpunished.
IMDB rating: 5.3/10
It isn’t perfect, but I actually liked this movie (I only watched it this year, 2018). I like that as far-fetched as it is, it also feels feasible in a way. For many minorities around the world white people are the enemy and if they had the chance to persecute them for all the suffering they endure at their hands, they would. It’s dramatic and the gore reminds me of movies such as Saw and Hostel.
Halloween (1978)*
Type: Slasher
Starring: Donald Pleasence & Jamie Lee Curtis
Summary: Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield to kill again.
IMDB rating: 7.8/10
Halloween is the first horror movie I ever saw and is what piqued my interest in the horror genre. For that reason, it will always be one of my favourites. It’s by far one of the most well-known and defining slasher movies and a true classic. The music alone will give you the creeps, but throw in a masked murderer (and one that apparently can’t be killed) and you’ll be in for a scare. As with most popular franchises Halloween has so many movies that I’ve lost count, but there are continuation issues with most of them and nothing can beat the original. The only other in the franchise I’d specifically recommend watching is ‘H20: 20 Years Later’ (1998), which you can watch immediately after the 1978 original and still understand what’s going on. This is the perfect Halloween movie (the clue is in the title) and it’s a tradition of mine to watch it every October.
Horns (2013)*
Type: Supernatural/Fantasy
Starring: Daniel Radcliffe & Juno Temple
Summary: In the aftermath of his girlfriend’s mysterious death, a young man awakens to find strange horns sprouting from his temples.
IMDB rating: 6.5/10
After the disappointment of ‘Woman in Black’ I didn’t have high hopes for this one, but I actually loved it. It had my stepbrother and I glued to the screen for the entire two hours it was on, which is a big deal since he can barely go without his XBox for more than 5 minutes. It’s weird, out there and not what you expect going in, but it really just works. The fantasy, supernatural and religious influences create an interesting and unique story. It also manages to incorporate comedy with more serious themes and even manages to depict an intriguing murder mystery and compelling love story amongst all that. Daniel Radcliffe is great as the lead and this is the first movie I saw of his that really stopped me from seeing him as Harry Potter and opened my eyes to the talented and adaptable actor he is. Overall, the movie is a mish mash of many different genres and themes (so for that reason may not be to everyone’s tastes) and I wouldn’t necessarily class it as a horror in the traditional sense, but it has elements of it and definitely stands out to me as being a unique movie that is a must-see.
House at the End Of The Street (2012)
Type: Thriller/Psychological
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence & Max Thieriot
Summary: After moving with her mother to a small town, a teenager finds that an accident happened in the house at the end of the street. Things get more complicated when she befriends a boy who was the only survivor of the accident.
IMDB rating: 5.6/10
I feel like this movie deserves more credit. Jennifer Lawrence and Max Thieriot do a great job and although it does take a while to get into the nitty gritty of the story, it’s engaging from beginning to end. And maybe I’m just bad at predicting these things, but there’s a twist that you just won’t see coming.
Hush (2016)
Type: Psychological/Slasher
Starring: Kate Siege & John Gallagher Jr.
Summary: A deaf writer who retreated into the woods to live a solitary life must fight for her life in silence when a masked killer appears at her window.
IMDB rating: 6.6/10
I saw the synopsis for this movie and didn’t expect to like it at all. After all, how entertaining can it be to watch a deaf woman stumble about running from killers for an hour and a half? Boy, how wrong was I. It’s incredibly tense, particularly in those moments where it’s completely silent and we get to experience it through the senses of the main character, Maddie, who is trooper and incredibly tactical and resourceful in her battle for survival.
Identity (2003)*
Type: Thriller/Mystery
Starring: John Cusack & Ray Liotta
Summary: Stranded at a desolate Nevada motel during a nasty rain-storm, ten strangers become acquainted with each other when they realize that they're being killed off one by one.
IMDB rating: 7.3/10
Incident in a Ghostland*
Type: Psychological
Starring: Crystal Reed & Mylène Farmer
Summary: A mother of two who inherits a house is confronted with murderous intruders on the first night in their new home and fights for her daughters' lives. Sixteen years later when the daughters reunite at the house, things get really strange.
IMDB rating: 6.3/10
The best new horror movie I’ve seen in years. In fact, I would include this in my top 20 favourite horrors of all time (maybe even top 10). A truly gritty, raw psychological horror with twists and turns that leaves you haunted long after it has ended. With all of the mediocre horrors that have been released in recent years, Incident in a Ghostland reminded me exactly why I love horror so much and does everything a truly good horror should do.
Insidious (2010)*
Type: Paranormal/Posession
Starring: Patrick Wilson & Rose Byrne
Summary: A family looks to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further.
IMDB rating: 6.8/10
There’s a reason these movies have earned so much recognition and are included on almost every top list of horror movies I’ve ever seen. It’s easy to think this movie will be your standard possession movie, but it takes it that step further by making you connect with the family and giving Patrick Wilson’s character a personal journey of self-discovery and growth. He uncovers secrets from his childhood as he tries to save his son from the same entity that plagued him as a child. There’s three movies in this franchise and I’d recommend watching all of them if you enjoy the first one.
Intruders (2015)
Type: Psychological/Thriller
Starring: Rory Culkin & Leticia Jimenez
Summary: Anna suffers from agoraphobia so crippling that when a trio of criminals break into her house, she cannot bring herself to flee. But what the intruders don’t realize is that agoraphobia is not her only problem.
IMDB rating: 5.7/10
I randomly put this movie on one night when my stepsister was round just to have on in the background and before I knew it we were both glued to the screen. How it ends is not the direction you expect it to take at all and I always like movies that have a twist at the end. It has a kind of ‘Don’t Breathe’ vibe with the intruders getting a lot more than they bargained for and just like ‘Don’t Breathe’ it’ll keep you engaged until the end.
The Invitation (2015)
Type: Thriller/Psychological
Starring: Logan Marshall-Green & Emayatzy Corinealdi
Summary: While attending a dinner party at his former home, a man thinks his ex-wife and her new husband have sinister intentions for their guests.
IMDB rating: 6.7/10
This is by far one of my favorite films I watched in 2017. There’s not many movies that can have me on the edge of my seat and questioning everything pretty much until the end, but this movie succeeded in doing exactly that. It makes you constantly question reality and whether the main protagonist, Will, is suffering from a psychotic break or his suspicions truly are justified. I’ve never studied film, so I’m unable to dissect it in a proper or adequate way, but what I will say is there is something about the way in which it’s filmed, directed and edited that perfectly portrays the apprehension, uncertainty, distress and suspense, particularly from Will’s perspective. My one critique is that I feel the ending could’ve been taken a step further and had more surprises thrown in there, since it was so tense all the way through but became a little predictable in the last 20 minutes. Despite this, it’s a great movie and also a very interesting exploration of grief and how it can deeply affect a person’s psyche. Definitely more of a thriller than a horror, but I enjoyed it a lot.
I Spit On Your Grave (2010)
Type: Psychological/Slasher
Starring: Sarah Butler & Jeff Branson
Summary: A writer who is brutalized during her cabin retreat seeks revenge on her attackers, who left her for dead.
IMDB rating: 6.4/10
This is the one movie I debated whether to include, because it’s so controversial. The original was released in 1978 and this is a remake, so I can’t speak to whether the original is better or to what degree the remake follows the original. All I will say is that it’s definitely not one for the faint hearted and I’d recommend anyone that considers watching it to take extreme caution before doing so. The first time I heard about this was from my stepbrother who told me it was so brutal and graphic that it’s been banned or censored in almost every country it’s been released in and after seeing it, I can understand why. I have a strong stomach and I’ve seen so many horror movies that it takes a lot for something to affect me, but this really did. And honestly, that’s the sole reason I’m including it on this list, because in my opinion, any horror movie that sticks in my mind and continues to haunt me after I’ve seen it is one that’s done it’s job. The main warning I need to give is about the rape scenes which are extremely long (according to Wiki up to 30 minutes long), graphic and difficult to watch. There were a few times when I had to close my eyes and remind myself it was just a movie, because it really felt like I was watching this poor woman get raped and tortured. There’s a lot of gore too in comparison to most of the other movies on this list and the killings are very sadistic and violent. Basically, after the first 15 minutes this film is intense and horrific from start to end.
Jennifer’s Body (2009)*
Type: Supernatural
Starring: Megan Fox & Amanda Seyfried
Summary: A newly possessed high school cheerleader turns into a succubus who specializes in killing her male classmates. Can her best friend put an end to the horror?
IMDB rating: 5.1/10
In many ways this movie is trash, but god, I love it. It’s nothing how you’d expect a movie featuring Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried to be, which is what makes it so great. As always Amanda’s acting is A+ and although Megan is sexualised (as she is in every movie she’s in), she makes a pretty convincing and at times scary villain that you love to hate and hate to love. The two actresses are the perfect contrast to one another, as are their characters and the dynamic between Jennifer and Needy is an interesting one to watch. It’s definitely more of a parody or spoof than a genuine horror, but the movie owns itself and doesn’t try to be anything other than what it is, which is why I think it’s so great. And despite being humorous and cliche in part, I’d argue that it has it’s scary moments (particularly the scene where Jennifer goes to Needy’s house after the fire) and interesting characterisation for both the main characters, who are actually nothing but innocent victims that are thrown into chaos.
The Last House On The Left (2009)
Type: Psychological
Starring: Garret Dillahunt & Monica Potter
Summary: After kidnapping and brutally assaulting two young women, a gang unknowingly finds refuge at a vacation home belonging to the parents of one of the victims: a mother and father who devise an increasingly gruesome series of revenge tactics.
IMDB rating: 6.6/10
This is your standard rape/revenge movie and reminds me of ‘I Spit On Your Grave’ but a tamer version. It’s good and worth a watch but nothing special, which I base on the fact that I re-watched it recently and didn’t even realise I’d seen it before until over half way through when I thought, “Huh, this seems familiar”. Before you watch, I should warn you that the rape scene is graphic and distressing.
Lights Out (2016)
Type: Supernatural
Starring: Teresa Palmer & Gabriel Bateman
Summary: Rebecca must unlock the terror behind her little brother’s experiences that once tested her sanity, bringing her face to face with an entity attached to their mother.
IMDB rating: 6.4/10
This is another one of those movies I decided to watch on a whim, expecting it not to be very good and it actually surprised me. I really liked the lead character (which is a rarity for me) and got on board with her and her family. The “entity’s” connection to the family is explored and it’s Rebecca’s job to save herself and her family from it. Not one for those scared of the dark (hah!).
Orphan (2009)*
Type: Thriller/Psychological
Starring: Vera Farmiga & Peter Sarsgaard
Summary: A husband and wife who recently lost their baby adopt a 9 year-old girl who is not nearly as innocent as she claims to be.
IMDB rating: 7/10
By far one of the best horror/thriller movies I’ve ever seen. Vera Farmiga brings her A game to any role she plays and this movie is no exception. This probably is more of a thriller than a horror and there’s a slow build, but it will keep you gripped. Generally with most movies there’s a level of predictability, but trust me, you will not guess the twist with this one. It’s still one of the only times I can recount being truly shocked at a movie, and although it’s not necessarily scary, it’s incredibly chilling and might make you reconsider adopting in the future.
Oujia: Origin of Evil (2016)
Type: Supernatural/Possession/Haunted house
Starring: Elizabeth Reaser & Lulu Wilson
Summary: In 1967 Los Angeles, a widowed mother and her 2 daughters add a new stunt to bolster their seance scam business, inviting an evil presence into their home.
IMDB rating: 6.1/10
This is a very underrated movie. I feel like the title insinuates it’s gonna suck, but it’s actually really good. It has a similar vibe to ‘The Conjuring’ with a little girl getting possessed, but it’s executed very well and has its scary moments.
Pet (2016)
Type: Thriller/Psychological
Starring: Dominic Monaghan & Ksenia Solo
Summary: A psychological thriller about a man who bumps into an old crush and subsequently becomes obsessed with her, leading him to hold her captive underneath the animal shelter where he works. But what will the victim have in store for her captor?
IMDB rating: 5.7/10
This is one of those movies where the only thought that goes through your head the entire time is, “What sick fuck thought of this?”. Dominic Monaghan is an actor I personally love and he’s great in this movie (if you’re able to overlook his poor American accent, which I admit I struggled with at times) and trust me when I say that how this movie starts, is nothing close to how it will end.
The Purge (2013)
Type: Psychological/Thriller
Starring: Ethan Hawke & Lena Headey
Summary: A wealthy family are held hostage for harboring the target of a murderous syndicate during the Purge, a 12-hour period in which any and all crime is legal.
IMDB rating: 5.7/10
Another movie on the list that I wouldn’t necessarily class as a horror, but which is scary purely based on the fact that this is something that could feasibly happen in the future. All crimes are legalised for 24 hours and anything can happen. The summary speaks for itself really.
The Ring (2002)
Type: Supernatural
Starring: Naomi Watts & Martin Henderson
Summary: A journalist must investigate a mysterious videotape which seems to cause the death of anyone in a week of viewing it.
IMDB rating: 7.1/10
This is well-known within the horror genre, because it quite simply delivers. It’s scary and every time I watch it I still feel a surge of panic whenever the videotape comes on screen and afterwards dread the sound of my phone going off. It’s simple but effectively scary and a classic.
Saw (2004)*
Type: Slasher/Gore
Starring: Cary Elwes & Leigh Whannell
Summary: Two strangers awaken in a room with no recollection of how they got there or why, and soon discover they are pawns in a deadly game perpetrated by a notorious serial killer.
IMDB rating: 7.7/10
Saw is another classic in the horror genre and one I go back to re-watch again and again. It’s a gore fest and I don’t know many people that have the stomach to sit through it, but it actually has a lot more to it than that. There’s a story behind Jigsaw, the killer, which is built upon across the franchise (I’d recommend watching all of the movies) and even the victims have back stories that are sometimes quite interesting. Just like ‘Final Destination’, it’s fascinating to see what the next death trap Jigsaw sets up will be like and whether or not the person will make it out alive. The music also gives me shivers whenever I hear it. It’s up there with the Halloween soundtrack as being my fave.
Scream (1996)*
Type: Slasher
Starring: Neve Campbell & Courteney Cox
Summary: A year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorized by a new killer, who targets the girl and her friends by using horror films as part of a deadly game.
IMDB rating: 7.2/10
How can anyone that enjoys horror movies not have seen Scream at least once? For me, this will always be at the top of my list as being the best horror movie. A strong cast, characters that viewers are actually able to connect to (Sidney is badass, Dewey is a loveable dork and Gale is that character you have a love-hate relationship with), interesting back-story that has continuity across the franchise (unlike Halloween) and a shit-ton of horror tropes classic to the horror genre that are both scary and at times funny. Again, I’d recommend watching all of the movies in the triology (even Scream 4 isn’t bad), but the first stands out to me as being the best, simply because nothing can beat the reveal of the killer.
Shaun Of The Dead (2004)*
Type: Comedy/Zombie
Starring: Simon Pegg & Nick Frost
Summary: A man decides to turn his moribund life around by winning back his ex-girlfriend, reconciling his relationship with his mother, and dealing with an entire community that has returned from the dead to eat the living.
IMDB rating: 8/10
I’m not a huge fan of horror comedies, but Shaun Of The Dead is an exception. This isn’t just one of my fave movies from the horror genre, but of all time. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are the ultimate comedic pairing and bounce off each other so well. The humor is spot on, actually laugh out loud funny (unlike Scary Movie), it’s cleverly written and witty, but also manages to incorporate an appropriate amount of gore and emotion. Just please go and watch this movie, you won’t regret it. I’d also just like to point out as a final point, that there’s a reason this is the most highly rated movie on IMDB off this list.
The Shallows (2016)
Type: Thriller/Shark
Starring: Blake Lively
Summary: A mere 200 yards from shore, surfer Nancy is attacked by a great white shark, with her short journey to safety becoming the ultimate contest of wills.
IMDB rating: 6.4/10
Now, I’ve seen my fair share of shark movies over the years and it’s an area I tend to steer clear of because they’re inevitably always complete and utter shite, but not this one. I was pleasantly surprised at just how engrossed I became with this movie. Usually when I’m watching something I’ll pause midway through to grab some snacks or I’ll browse social media for a few minutes, but with this I remained glue to my screen from beginning to end. I think what makes this movie so good in comparison to other shark movies I’ve seen is Blake Lively’s performance. She does an amazing job as the lead, particularly considering 90% of the movie is of her on her own. Nancy is a pragmatic character that really fights tooth (excuse the pun) and nail to survive and she makes you really root for her. It does drag a little towards the end, but overall I enjoyed this movie and although I wouldn’t exactly class it a horror, most sites list it as being so.
The Shining (1980)*
Type: Psychological/Supernatural
Starring: Jack Nicholson & Shelley Duvall
Summary: A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where an evil spiritual presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from the past and of the future.
IMDB rating: 8.4/10
An absolute classic to the horror genre that most of you will likely already have seen. Surprisingly, I only got around to watching this in 2018 (although I’d seen snippets of it before, I’d never watched it properly) and it met all of my expectations. It’s movies like these that represent everything that’s amazing in the horror genre.
Sinister (2012)
Type: Supernatural
Starring: Ethan Hawke & Juliet Rylance
Summary: Washed-up true-crime writer Ellison Oswalt finds a box of super 8 home movies that suggest the murder he is currently researching is the work of a serial killer whose work dates back to the 1960s.
IMDB rating: 6.8/10
I only recently watched this after seeing it on multiple “best horror movie” lists and can understand why it was included. Although the build-up is slow, it adds to the tension and definitely has it’s jump-scare moments. Ethan Hawke as the lead is incredible. Even though you know he’s not crazy, you still find yourself questioning his mental health as he becomes obsessed with his work and in the process puts his entire family in jeopardy. I wasn’t overly fond of the ending (a trend that’s common for me), but overall it’s a good movie.
Split (2016)*
Type: Thriller/Psychological
Starring: James McAvoy & Anya Taylor-Joy
Summary: Three girls are kidnapped by a man with a diagnosed 23 distinct personalities. They must try to escape before the apparent emergence of a frightful new 24th.
IMDB rating: 7.3/10
I was so so so so excited to see this movie the second I saw it advertised, (mainly because of James McAvoy, let’s be honest here), but also because it looked so damn good. As expected, James delivered in this movie, he really did. Portraying mental illness is a tricky task for any actor and a mental illness that manifests itself in 23 distinct personalities is even trickier to pull off, but James did it. I was gripped from the very beginning and found myself developing attachments to each distinctive personality that we saw. The end was disappointing since it got a little wacky and too far-fetched for my liking, particularly considering the tone of the rest of the movie, but overall it’s a brilliant movie that I would recommend anyone to watch.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)*
Type: Slasher
Starring: Marilyn Burns & Edwin Neal
Summary: Two siblings visit their grandfather’s grave in Texas along with three of their friends and are attacked by a family of cannibalistic psychopaths.
IMDB rating: 7.5/10
How could I not include ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ on this list? It’s as defining of the slasher genre as ‘Halloween’ (although in my opinion, not as good) and one of the first franchises I watched when I was first discovering horror. The 1974 original is the best out of the 7 films that make up the franchise which is no surprise. As with any long-running horror franchise, the movies span across 4 decades and there’s huge continuity issues with each producer/director putting their own spin on it and a lot of the time failing to do it justice. I haven’t seen all of them but have to warn you to steer clear of the fourth installment, ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation’ (1994), at all costs. Don’t let the cast fool you, it’s by far one of the worst films I’ve ever seen and the 3.4 rating it has on IMDb is generous. The only other two worth watching in my opinion are the fifth and sixth installments - ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ (2003) and ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning’ (2006), which in some ways I actually prefer to the 1974 original.
The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014)
Type: Slasher
Starring: Addison Timlin & Veronica Cartwright
Summary: 65 years after a masked serial killer terrorized the small town of Texarkana, the so-called ‘moonlight murders’ begin again. Is it a copycat or something even more sinister? A lonely high school girl, with dark secrets of her own, may be the key to catching him.
IMDB rating: 5.6/10
I feel like most people would rate this movie as average or even below average, but you know what? I really liked it. Probably because I’m a sucker for a good old slasher movie with a bit of history to the town/killer and that’s exactly what this movie is.
Vacancy (2007)*
Type: Psychological
Starring: Kate Beckinsale & Luke Wilson
Summary: A married couple becomes stranded at an isolated motel and finds hidden video cameras in their room. They soon realize that unless they escape, they’ll be the next victims of a snuff film.
IMDB rating: 6.2/10
This was recommended to me by my best friend who said he was so scared by this that he didn’t sleep properly for a week. I wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s that scary (but that’s just because it takes a lot for a movie to scare me), but it will have you on the edge of your seat. I do really like this movie for the fact that it’s so isolated and feels like something that could realistically happen to anyone that’s on holiday in a strange place. There’s a pretty slow build too, which adds to the tension and fear. Definitely a must-watch.
The Witch (2015)
Type: Supernatural
Starring: Anya Taylor-Joy & Ralph Ineson
Summary: A family in 1630s New England is torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic and possession.
IMDB rating: 6.8/10
This is a fairly new movie that I’ve seen come highly recommended so I decided to give it a try. Since it’s set in the 1630′s and based on true accounts of experiences with witchcraft during that period, it has a very historical and thematic feel to it. Anya Taylor-Joy is incredibly talented and fast becoming one of my fave young actresses within the horror genre. She does a fantastic job in this movie, as does the entire cast. The build-up is slow and very effective and unlike other supernatural movies I watch where I’m usually thinking “As if that would ever happen”, there’s something about this that feels unnervingly realistic despite how wacky it is. Perhaps it’s because it’s based on true accounts but the sufferings the family go through feel reflective of something that may have really happened in our history. I do have some critique when it comes to this movie though, the main one being that I didn’t like the ending. It gets a little crazy and what starts out feeling realistic soon becomes very far-fetched. I also didn’t understand the ending and had to do a little Googling to find out the meaning of it, which I feel is something that should’ve been self-explanatory. All in all it’s a decent movie although it doesn’t stand out to me as being amazing.
Wolf Creek & Wolf Creek 2 (2005 & 2013)*
Type: Psychological/Slasher
Starring: Nathan Phillips & Cassandra Magrath
Summary: Three backpackers stranded in the Australian outback are befriended by a local who turns out to be a sadistic psychopath and will plunge them into a hellish nightmare of insufferable torture.
IMDB rating: 6.3/10
You know when you have that one horror movie that impacted you so much the first time you saw it that you never forget it? This is that movie for me. It still haunts me today, which is partly because I saw it for the first time at such a young age, but mostly because it’s based on a true story and could so easily happen to any one of us in real life. Just watch how the killer lures them back to his place, it’s so sneaky and clever and quite frankly has made me wary of ever accepting a stranger’s help if my car breaks down(!) As for Wolf Creek 2, as far as sequels go, it’s decent and follows the POV of the killer Mick from the first Wolf Creek.
Would You Rather (2012)
Type: Psychological
Starring: Brittany Snow & June Squibb
Summary: Desperate to help her ailing brother, a young woman unknowingly agrees to compete in a deadly game of “Would You Rather,” hosted by a sadistic aristocrat.
IMDB rating: 5.8/10
I feel like this movie delivers exactly what it says on the tin. A bunch of vulnerable individuals who are desperate for cash for various reasons are invited by a stranger to engage in a game of “Would You Rather” in exchange for a large sum of money. Obviously the choices they’re faced with aren’t the traditional ones you’d expect to have in “Would You Rather” and horror and gore ensues. I think what’s great about this movie is that it has you questioning what you’d do in this situation. If you needed money to save a loved one from a life threatening illness, how far would you go?
You’re Next (2011)
Type: Slasher/Psychological
Starring: Sharni Vinson & Joe Swanberg
Summary: When the Davison family comes under attack during their wedding anniversary getaway, the gang of mysterious killers soon learns that one of the victims harbors a secret talent for fighting back.
IMDB rating: 6.5/10
Yet another movie I wasn’t expecting to like much, but that pleasantly surprised me. This’ll certainly keep you on the edge of your seat and the mysterious killers turn out to not be so mysterious after all. You might guess who they are before the big reveal (me and my mom did), but it will still keep you guessing for a while and the journey is intense as the family fight for survival.
Zombieland (2009)
Type: Comedy/Zombie
Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone & Woody Harrelson
Summary: A shy student trying to reach his family in Ohio, a gun-toting tough guy trying to find the last Twinkie, and a pair of sisters trying to get to an amusement park join forces to travel across a zombie-filled America.
IMDB rating: 7.7/10
The only other horror comedy that I actually like. I mean, for the amazing cast alone this deserves to be on this list. But it also has the perfect amount of comedy, seriousness and gore.
10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)
Type: Psychological
Starring: John Goodman & Mary Elizabeth Winstead
Summary: After getting in a car accident, a woman is held in a shelter with two men, who claim the outside world is affected by a widespread chemical attack.
IMDB rating: 7.2/10
Going into this, I was expecting it to be rubbish, (mainly because ‘Cloverfield’ was so bloody awful that I didn’t see how a sequel could be any better), but it took me by surprise. The main question throughout the film is, are the men telling the truth? Are they good guys or bad guys? Those are the questions you will doubt the answers to right up until the reveal at the end. It kept me hooked and the fact that it isn’t found-footage like ‘Cloverfield’ definitely works in its favour.
Lastly, I’d like to mention some movies that I see included on a lot of recommendation, best of or top 10/50/100 lists that I personally don’t rate and why. That isn’t saying you shouldn’t watch them, just that they’re not necessarily as good as they’re portrayed to be. Warning: The movies listed below will contain spoilers.
It Follows (2014) - The entire movie is based upon the idea of a sexually transmitted disease/curse, which is just laughable and something I couldn’t take seriously at all. It’s impossible to root for the main character who is so utterly conceited and selfish that she willingly has sex with her best friend a.k.a the guy who has been crushing on her for years and who cares about her so much that he offers to have sex with her to free her from the entity, which results in his untimely death. The only good thing about this movie is that it raises awareness of the consequences of unprotected sex with strangers and hopefully encourages people to learn more about someone before jumping into bed with them.
The Babadook (2014) - I’d heard so many great things about this movie and how terrifying it was and for that reason I went in with high expectations. When it got started my first thought was “Surely this is the wrong movie”, because bloody hell, it was bad. I’ve seen so many reviews crediting it for how amazing it is considering it had such a low budget and all I say to that is - you can bloody well tell it had a low budget. Everything about it screams “low budget movie”. The incessant whining and yelling from both the mother and child made my ears bleed and all it succeeded in doing was irritating (and boring me) me rather than scaring me. I don’t condone that the idea behind it is a good one, but the execution is poor and the acting mediocre. For that reason, I often question how this has managed to receive such a high reputation within the horror genre.
The Descent (2005) - Again, such a highly accredited movie for which I can’t understand why. A bunch of girls running around in the pitch black underground from some mysterious monsters that kill them all one by one… it’s just so boring. There’s no plot, no build-up, no mystery, nothing. I actually watched it for the first time when I was 16, around the time I was starting to really get into horror movies and even back then it didn’t scare me. I can, however, see why it’d be scary to others as it does create a feeling of claustrophobia since it’s set underground. My dislike for is mainly because monster movies aren’t really my thing.
Friday The 13th (1980) - I feel like I’m betraying myself by including Friday The 13th, because there’s no denying that it was really defining for the slasher genre and it was one of the first movies that introduced me to horror, but I just don’t like it. I tried to re-watch it recently (since I hadn’t watched it all the way through since I was a teenager) and I couldn’t even get half-way through. The franchise is so big with there being 12 films and the story just gets lost on me. I know there’s some sort of story there with Jason and his mother, but it doesn’t harbour the same impact and intriuge to me as Michael Myers’ back-story. Essentially Friday The 13th will always be a poor rip-off of Halloween.
The Blair Witch Project (1999) - I already mentioned that found-footage movies are a huuuuge no-no for me and they’re by far the worst corner of the horror genre. Blair Witch is something you either love or hate, for me it’s the latter. It’s just so boring. With any found-footage movies there’s an inability for me to connect to the characters or the story and for that reason the suspense and fear just isn’t there which is so important for any horror movie. I watched this movie once and I’d never watch it again. It’s one of those movies where the end credits roll and you sit back in your chair, look over to the person you’re watching it with and say, “Well there’s 2 hours of our lives we’re never getting back.”
Paranormal Activity (2007) - Another franchise that’s done so well and become so huge, but I can’t understand why. More found-footage which I despise (the wobbling and half-head shots alone are enough to put me off watching), but these are somewhat watchable in comparison to Blair Witch. I think when you watch these movies in the cinema (which I did for at least 3 of them, though I can’t remember which ones), there are a lot of jump-scare moments mostly because there’s a lot of “normal” scenes set in the day where nothing much is happening, so when those scarier moments happen they’re more impacting. However, a lot of the time the development is so slow with the movement of a sheet or door being the only occurrence for over half of the film and then in the last 10 minutes everything goes crazy. Admittedly there are some of the movies in the franchise that are better. My personal favourite is Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, which is actually the one that is often overlooked and underrated, but that by far had the biggest impact on me. So if you do choose to watch these, that would be the one I’d recommend. But overall the franchise is extremely overrated and it’s reputation is based purely on those cinema jump-scares they’re so famous for.
The Woman In Black (2012) - AKA the most boring movie in existence. This was the first Daniel Radcliffe movie I’d watched since Harry Potter and as a huge fan of him, I went in with high expectations and it certainly disappointed. Not because of Daniel’s acting, but because of the simple fact that it failed to engage me. It wasn’t scary, it wasn’t tense and I found myself wishing that something would jump out to scare me just to keep me engaged, even if it was only for a second. This is one of those movies that was so incredibly dull that I wouldn’t even be able to recall what happened if someone paid me £100 to do so. All I remember is Daniel Radcliffe looking out of a window a lot and jumping every time he saw a black figure standing in the distance (yawn!).
The Strangers (2008) - I only watched this a couple of weeks ago to see if it was worthy of being included on this list and came to the conclusion it wasn’t. It’s not the worst horror movie I’ve ever seen and unlike some of the others on this list I wouldn’t strongly recommend against watching it, but like all of the movies above, it completely failed to engage me. I paid attention for the first 15 minutes, after which I ended up pulling out my laptop. And the ending is possibly one of my most hated endings in any horror movie whereby the villains/killers have absolutely zero motive. When they were asked, “Why are you doing this?” their response was simply, “Because you were home.” Really? I’ve sat through two hours of watching two people get mentally tortured and hunted like dogs just because a bunch of sadistic people stumbled across their house and decided to torture them just to pass the time? No thanks.
The Mist (2007) - Again, another movie I opted to watch based on the fact it was included on a list of recommendations and I was bitterly disappointed. Some big mysterious alien-like bugs attack a small town from beneath the cover of mist. It’s so boring and not at all scary. Once again, my dislike for this movie can be put down to my dislike for monster/alien sub-genres.
The Hills Have Eyes (2006) - This is a movie that everyone has heard the name of, even if you haven’t seen it. For that reason, I had high expectations going into it, but unfortunately it was just more boring shit about a family getting hunted down by a bunch of cannibal deformed humans in the desert. Yawn.
The Girl With All The Gifts (2016) - This movie starts out so promising and I was so eager to learn the mystery behind the dystopian world it was set in and when I realised it was just another zombie movie I was deflated. Once the mystery ends and the “hungries” are revealed there’s really nothing more to watch for. I also don’t understand how this qualifies as horror because it’s not in the least bit scary or pertaining to anything I consider defining of a horror movie and I would happily let any young teenager watch it. The only thing that remotely relates it to horror is the inclusion of zombies.
V/H/S (2012) - I should’ve been smart enough to read more about this movie before watching it, but I didn’t and it turns out it’s a found-footage movie, yay my fave(!) /sarcasm. The problem with this movie (aside from the fact that it’s found-footage) is that I found it impossible to follow. It jumped from one group/plot to the next and I couldn’t make head or tail of what was going on. Because of this, it didn’t keep my focus and I ended up having to Wiki what the plot/ending was and ended up frowning at the screen in utter confusion because I just didn’t get what the plot was supposed to be from what I watched.
Drag Me To Hell (2009) - Along with ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation’ this is the worst horror movie I’ve ever seen. God knows how it’s managed to scrape a 6 point something rating on IMDb. I couldn’t even list all of the things that make this so terrible, just save yourself from wasting an hour and a half of your life and don’t watch this movie.
Rosemary’s Baby (1968) - This movie is considered a classic in the horror genre and is on pretty much every recommendation list you’ll ever find relating to horror, but god, it’s awful. Maybe it’s because I’m accustomed to modern horror which is so much more vivid, graphic and unafraid to push the boundaries, but I find this movie so tame, boring and not at all scary. It’s predictable with a terrible and anti-climatic ending that drags out a lot. There is nothing appealing or interesting about it and if you do decide to watch it, just don’t go in with high expectations like I did, because you’re bound to be disappointed.

How to Run a Team, as Instructed by A Shitty Leader
So you have a team. You know that you need to recruit to replace the slackers. You know that you need to enforce rules and keep your remaining cats in line. You know that you need to Exhibit Leadership Qualities.
But how?
At this point I should remind you that when I say ‘leader’, I mean that I have some really terrible innate leadership instincts, not that I actually ran teams into the ground by leading them. If you read this post-
- I wasn’t exaggerating. I had been leader of my team then for minutes at a time, when my leader forgot himself and accidentally promoted me on occasion. Maybe that qualifies me for both definitions of the word!
However, in the two years I helped to run my team, said team has had fewer than 5 teammates leave for a different team because they were dissatisfied with how things were in our team.
I should clarify that not all these points describe how we ran our team, but rather how I wish we could have. It’s often not possible to stick to all these pointers; but we must all do the best we can. I don’t help to run that team, now; I’m not even on that team. Even so, I feel like the points below are mostly universally applicable and honestly pretty common-sense.
Sometimes, we all just need a reminder. Who better than this shitty leader who needed constant conscious introspection and reasoning to lead a team?
...---...
BASICS
1. Know your team. Take the time to get to know your most active members, and then take the time to reach out to and speak to your less active members. This helps to build a bond between you and your individual members. It’s helpful to make your teammates feel like they can come to you when they have concerns.
2. Know your leadership. Your officers, your leader- these are the people who will be supporting you in the weeks and months to come. It is important to ensure that all of you can trust each other to come forward with opinions you may have. Keep your lines of communication open so all of you are aware of what’s happening within the team at any one given time.
3. Help your team know each other. It’s good to have at least one common chat open for game discussion and socialisation. This helps your team get to know each other better and build stronger bonds of community that make this social game a much more fun one to play. - You can opt to separate the two, to cater to people who may want a pure game-related chat. Ensure that you police the division between game-related and social chatter. The upside of this is that you can add random people and alumni to your social chat and not have to worry about them SPYING on your team. My old team’s social still manages to be one of my favourite chats in LINE. - Speaking of LINE, some teams choose to use Discord, WhatsApp, or Slack as messaging alternatives. I’m fond of LINE, as it’s the most popular messaging app and is hence more convenient for getting in touch with people who aren’t on your team. It’s also anonymous, which is important for some people to feel comfortable. - Starting weekly team calls is something that many teams choose to do. It, however, often falls to leadership to initiate and begin such a team tradition, so it’s less socially pressuring for teammates to join and establish such a habit. Feel free to inform your team beforehand so they can set aside time, if they’re interested.
4. Know your partners. Particularly relevant for Atlas teams, know your 5ta leadership well and get to know your extended alliance’s leaders well, when you get the chance. Atlas is a political game, except it’s politics are based on who you’re friends with, and who will vouch for you. It may sound scary, but really it’s just about making friends with the people you want to be friends with.
...---...
MINIMUMS AND EXPECTATIONS
5. Set your rules and guidelines. And then make them clear and accessible in the team wiki, LINE notes, or otherwise. Ensure your team is aware of them. A good team is one that expects all it’s members to adhere to the same standards, and a clearly visible set of guidelines is key in enforcing that. 6. Ensure that your new recruits are aware of these expectations. Again, no matter their size, it’s important to hold everyone to the same standards. Make sure that you’ve impressed this upon your new recruits so they aren’t surprised when they join.
7. Be flexible. This may seem to stand at a counterpoint to the last two points, but it’s important to recognise that at the end of the day, War Dragons is only a game, and real life can often get in the way of us fulfilling in game obligations. I personally emphasised that if anyone was aware they wouldn’t be able to meet minimums for any particular week, it would be fine to seek clemency in advance. If they don’t meet minimums without letting you know, consider asking what’s up before booting them. For longer periods of time, though, consider discussing moving them off the team, to keep it fair to the rest of the team.
8. Think about why you’re setting certain minimums and policies. Sometimes, leaders may choose to set minimums arbitrarily without considering why exactly they’re doing so. - Personally, I never set minimums for Fort and Breed- I wanted my members to be able to progress the way they wish instead of arbitrarily spending resources to get points. - Troop minimums made very little sense for our team- we had recruited a team of responsible people who knew how to manage their troops, and we didn’t want to stop people from sniping their little hearts out. This team I speak of is currently ranked amongst and above a majority of diamond teams for troops killed, now. - Bank policies are good to think about- how can you make them fair for your team? Do you want people to pay taxes, or submit donations, or otherwise? Does it make sense to restrict food and wood withdrawals outside of fort and breed? How can you make the distribution system fair? - I made a post about PvP minimums here, too, if you want to look into this topic further.
9. Give your teammates a voice. Make sure that they’re aware that they can speak up if they agree or disagree with certain policies, minimums, and expectations. This helps your teammates feel included and cared about.
...---...
RECRUITMENT AND REPLACEMENT
10. Recruitment: Long Term vs Short Term. This is an important consideration for any team, and you should consider your team’s specific situation to make a decision on this. Anything I say in this section holds true for merges, as well, btw. - Long term recruitment: You hold off on many meh recruits for those recruits you want to keep and grow, in the long term. The downside of this is that you’ll probably be waiting a long time. - Short term recruitment: You go through new recruits by constantly upgrading to newer, better models. The downside of this is that you’ll probably destabilise your team’s social fabric in the long term by making so many changes to your roster in short order. 11. What makes your team attractive? This may be quite duh, but, what sets your team apart from everyone else’s standard egg tokens, castles, etc.? Every team has those. What makes you different? Capitalize on these to stand out to new recruits. Also please stop with the one-note recruitment posters, unless you have fun making them. Then carry on.
12. Give the people you’re replacing time to find new teams. With few exceptions, these are players who have contributed to making your team what it is today. As much as possible, give them a few days to find a new team. 13. Vet your recruits well. Remember, these are people you’re letting onto your team. What they do and how they behave will directly affect your team’s performance. You can spare an hour to just chat with them and get a better feel of their personality and how they will fit on your team, beyond their game performance. 14. Make your recruits feel welcome. Take the time to go through team conventions and rules with them when they first join. They may be from a very different team environment. Check in with them often in the first week to see how they’re settling in. It’s good to send out a weekly mail to introduce everyone to each other, to ease transitions into the team.
...---... EVENTS AND ATLAS 15. Be gracious. Don’t take losses personally, and don’t gloat (too much or publicly! Have some fun!) over your wins. Leadership’s attitude towards any occurrence in the game will affect team morale. Other people’s opinions are secondary, but they’re entitled to what they think, too. Accept this as well.
16. Your team comes first. Ahead of your personal interests. Ahead of the interests of your friends on other teams. You’re responsible for the gameplay and enjoyment of 49 other people. Please don’t be that team that does officer only guard swaps, or sets up farm bases to swap with another team without informing your members. This also means that you can and should feel free to ignore opinions by other teams, on your team. They matter far less, so long as your team is happy. You know your team best, and haters gonna hate.
17. Be certain of how you want to play your game. There’s no shame in sandbagging. There’s no shame in choosing to target only certain teams in PvP. There’s no shame in sniping. Are you certain you want to take a gifted castle? Are you certain you want to swap guards? Are you certain you want to help in this failed raid? There’s no shame in playing the game as you are allowed to play it. All that matters is that your team is in agreement, and you can reconcile how you play with your conscience.
18. Do what makes you and your team happy. You don’t need to be efficient to enjoy your game. As long as your team is fine with it, go pirate your little hearts out! Sandbag away! The world is your oyster!
19. Form your own opinions. In this age of some pretty propagandised Atlas movements, consider what you’ve personally observed of the subjects at hand and form your own opinions based on that instead of listening in to gossip. You’ll be much happier distancing yourself and your team from drama, too. 20. Think long term. If you agree to gate this T4, you’ll get a T4, but in the long term, will your team’s troop loss be worth it? If you don’t participate in Atlas battles with your alliance, what happens when you’re forced on defence?
21. Stay humble. No team is the best in every single category. There’s always something new to learn from everyone else. Some pride in your team is good, but too much is hubris. It results in things like teams threatening to destroy other teams and getting destroyed instead. Conversely...
22. Keep your own counsel. If you play your cards close to your chest, this is how you become that team that destroys all bragging comers. Crouching tiger, hidden dragon!
23. Be proud of your team. This may seem contradictory, but you know your own team’s strength best. Confidence boosts your team’s morale, and increases activity.
24. Communicate early. If you have a guard swap coming up, give a few days’ of notice. If you need people online for a mega wave at the end of a fight pits round, tag in advance. If you’re going to change minimums for the week for any given reason, give notice. This gives time for people to discuss any concerns they may have about changes with you.
25. Lead by Example. Leading a team is a thankless job, but in return you get the respect and recognition of all your teammates. This means they will look to you to embody a platonic ideal of the team they love. Make sure that you’re helping them open paths in TR, that you’re supporting them for XP runs, and that you’re right there with them hitting low glory teams to open paths. That’s all I can think of for now. If you have other topics/points to add on, feel free to PM/submit an ask to me so I can add it.

Headcanon of what Ignis, Prompto, and Gladio (Iris, Cor, and maybe Talcott) do after the daemons are gone?
So, I am assuming that for this we are going with the theory that the boys survived but Noct didn’t? If you meant something different Anon then just let me know because there will obviously be some changes o/
So as a collective:
They all worked in beginning the reconstruction of Insomnia effort along with what other few members remained of the crownsguard and their servants
Word quickly spread what was happening and people all over Lucis went to Insomnia to help in any way possible
A lot of them were people who had been evacuated out of their homes when the Nif’s attacked and forced out of their city
They effectively founded a democratic government, all suggestions to crown a new king were denied so what would have been the royal council is now a council of itself where all politicial matters are discussed, voted upon, must be agreed upon etc etc.
There is one man who acts as the prime minister so to speak, oversee’s it all and ensures it runs smoothly and tends to do all public addresses, that is the man most qualified for the job.
Individuals under the cut to save your dashboards; putting the bros last as they will be longest probably
Iris
Was so good as a daemon hunter she now works a lot with the hunters
The daemons are gone but there are still many dangerous wild beasts that need to be kept in check, especially as they look to expand cities and outposts into more habitable area’s for Lucis citizens
The hunters are officially supported by the new Lucis Government and Iris is the main point of contact between Meldaccio (which has been expanded upon greatly), numerous other hunter outposts that have popped up, and Insomnia
It is a much more organised and stream lined operation nowadays
She spends a lot of time travelling, organising and still goes out and slays beasts herself and she loves it
Cor
Without the threat of the Empire there is no need for a large army or anything like that but they do still need protection in case of emergency
Cor oversee’s all of these aspects including the general guards/police sort of dealio that spreads through out the region
He is a hghly respected member of the political council whose opinions and thoughts are always weighed very heavily
His primary function is to ensure the safety of all citizens of Lucis and he takes his duty very seriously, works quite closely with Iris and the hunters
Talcott
Acts as an Attendant to the Lucian Council
Has often been offered a higher ranking role but is happy to keep doing what he is doing in supporting them in any way possible
Always goes with the boys whenever they have to travel for work reasons, in fact he is the one who drives them now
Still loves cactuars and has all his figurines, and is still searching out new ones especially now without the Empire travelling is practically unlimited
Was taught a load of photography tips from Prompto
Prompto
Still insists on taking photos constantly; just in case noct comes back he can show him what they’ve been up to
Tries to take them in their council meetings
Gets told off by Ignis because it’s ‘unprofessional’
took a while for him to work out that he knew he was doing it because of the shutter sound; ‘but how does he know’ 'I’m blind not deaf’
started a project to get all of the wild and homeless animals in insomnia rehomed
its an ongoing project that he loves doing alongside his work in the citadel
lives for when they get to go on the road but always get slightly upset thinking about the good old days
Is still a regular face at the Wiz Chocobo Post whenever he gets the chance
Gladio
Is the worst when it comes to having to stay in the citadel in an office doing work
leaves this to Ignis as much as possible for that very reason
Works a lot alongside Cor, but tends to focus more on training up there new recruits in insomnia
Is reknowned for being a brutal trainer but it gets the job done and done well so nobody really complains (apart from the trainees and there muscles)
Also leads the security effort for the core group within the new Insomnian government council even though he is a part of it
Still always sits in the back of the car when they travel as a group for the leg room
Has shares in cup noodles and did an advertising campaign for them
Ignis
Tried to refuse the role of leading the New Insomnian Council until this was frequently denied and the point made that he is, in all ways, the only one of them truly trained from the job
Finally accepted it under the rules that he doesn’t lead it, he simply partakes and guides it into the right direction
Literally everyone just agreed to this stipulation so he would do it
On the side he owns what has become one of the most popular restaurants in Insomnia; The Regalia
It was actually prompto who suggested the idea, and once Gladio realised how good of an idea it was they didn’t stop mentioning it until it happened
What was going to be just a small place showcasing some of the recipes concocted on their journeys soon blew up in popularity
Ignis’ favourite thing about it is he doesn’t have to cook, when he does it is for enjoyment rather than obligation
But ALL the chefs who work there have been trained by him. New chefs often don’t believe he is actually blind when they go through the training process
Sometimes the patrons get extra lucky because he does, on occasion, go and cook himself normally if he has had a busy or stressful day and needs to unwind, or if they have special guests he doesn’t have to host himself
Random Bonus Headcanons
(Because my brain is annoying af and likes to go on tangents)
Umbra often appears to help out Ignis, normally if he is on his own in a crowded area just to be a bit of support. Sure he has adjusted amazingly well to not getting his sight back but there are still times it can be unnerving. The rest of the time he is with Prompto and the several other dogs that the blonde has adopted
Hammerhead has expanded massively and is still run by Cindy. All of the ‘crown city made’ items that cindy mentioned that were salvageable are now produced in Hammerhead. People travel from all over Lucis to get work done there and they are looking to expand again, and quite possibly open up a few more garages around Lucis when Cindy’s apprentices are ready for that.
When they were rebuilding the Citadel, everything was salvaged apart from the Throne Room. It was debated but instead it remains exactly as it was when Noctis was in there for the last time. The doors to it were sealed and only three keys exist to unlock it held by the trio. Twice a year they all go in together; on Noctis’ birthday and the anniversary of when the Light returned. Aside from that prompto and gladio practically never go in, they find it too emotional. Ignis on the other hand goes in regularly, normally when he is faced with a situation he doesn’t know how to handle and needs time to think about it.
Super secret bonus Gladnis. Everything that ensued when Noct returned shed light on more than just the world. After their final stand together and believing they were facing death made Gladio realise what he had still wanted after all those years. That what had happened in those ten years (a.n: because something happened since we go back to Insomnia with Gladio engaged to a random woman, however I am still piecing together my headcanons for what it was exactly that happened) didn’t actually matter in the grand scheme of things and Ignis had the same ideas. Gladio’s engagement was called off (she took it surprisingly well probably knowing that he still had feelings for the man he frequently mentioned even if he didn’t realise) and him and Ignis live happily together close to the Citadel so they can simply walk to work, with a cat that they adopted via Prompto
#I could probably go on but I am going to put a stop in it there#since I have been owing this for daaaaaays and feel so bad#but it's been an ongoing process which I finally managed to finish with the assistance of vodka and chambord#my headcanons sponssored by French martinis#ffxv#final fantasy xv#ffxv headcanons#timeskip#ignis scientia#ignis#ffxv ignis#prompto#prompto argentum#ffxv prompto#gladio#gladiolus amicitia#ffxv gladio#gladnis#iris amicitia#ffxv iris#cor#cor the immortal#cor leonis#talcott#talcott hester#au where my precious baby survives and nothing hurts#reference to my last batch of iggy headcanons#headcanons#future Lucis headcanons#insomnia

Hey i just wanted to ask a kinda touchy question. I really appreciate the fact that you ban fics on your blogs such as noncon and shotacon ect. I feel like fanfiction writers take this free speech thing too far and dont understand how damaging such things could be to peoples perceptions on sex and the unhealthy outlook certain things have! Ive always read fanfictions but im starting to feel uncomfortable with the smut ones particularly. (1)
(2) I understand writers disclaim at the beginning of a story that the stories are works of fictions but at the end of the day these are based off of real people and avalible for the public to read. I just find it kinda bad to fetishize a person, you know, wether its their stage persona or not? Its kind of violating i feel and probably very uncomfortable for someone to read their body being used a certain way to the enjoyment of a large audience.
(3) Anyways im just curious of your opinions since I respect your past ideals! Wanted to get into fanfic writing myself and im not coming for anyone just sometimes i stop myself and think i would hate for people to write about me like im a sex object in smut and get off on that in many cases!! But i dunno at the same time people would probably do it in their heads anyways. I dunno. i find romantic stories to be a different case,im touching more on the vivid sex scenes you know?
Warning: OP’s blog is a porn blog, do not click if you do not want to see.
First of all I just want to say that there’s no such thing as one genre that’s better or more worthwhile than another. People are allowed to like and enjoy different things, and change their likes and dislikes as they go along in life. I hope everyone is clear on that point. Free speech is just that, you are free to write and say what you want- and others are free to tell you that you’re full of shit.
I also want to address your false equivalency you make in this ask because frankly it is not what we stand for in FY!EF at all. Smut is not equal to nor represents shotacon or noncon. These are separate issues that exist aside from smut itself. This is why we don’t recommend them, because there is something illegal about them and at their core, morally repugnant. Are we the morality police? No, but it’s our blog and we will only post content we feel comfortable with. And we are very comfortable with smut.
Additionally, we (the fandom) have no right to judge what is “healthy” or unhealthy for another person, especially a fellow member of the fandom or for the idols that fanfic is written about. Fanfic is not a surprise to celebrities anymore, they expect it and in Korea they are trained to deal with shipping. Do you actually think ships exist by mistake? They are a marketing ploy to sell more albums and bring in more fans. Fanfic, at least in the US legal system does not rise to the level of being libel or defamation. Legally, it is a grey area and will likely continue to be so indefinitely.
Idols don’t have to read fanfic about themselves if they don’t want to, we are not forcing it upon them (unless you’re one of those people who posts HUNHAN FOREVER on Sehun’s instagram…then you’ve gone too far.)
Next! I want to address what I see as the underlying issue in your ask, because at the end of the day its not about smut vs romance, its about the fetishization of gay men (and all queer relationships) by a largely cis population of women. For the purpose my argument I’m going to focus on gay men.
Warning: Admin Aeryn is going to swear a lot.
A lot of fanfic is written by a younger audience, some of whom don’t know any gay people IRL and their exposure to gay people is through popular media such as yaoi anime, fanfic and popular bloggers. Media exposure does not mean you know or understand the gay population, doesn’t mean you’re qualified to speak on the behalf of gay folks or are even qualified to write about them.
But hey! That’s what the internet is for. We can write what we want, right?
No, not really.
Fanfic does not exist in a vacuum and I think what some of your discomfort seems to be is just that, the fetishization of gay men into certain roles or stereotypes that are inherently flawed, degrading and uncomfortable. Example: Baekhyun is a whiny bottom bitch slut who cries and begs Chanyeol for his massive monster dong. *
That’s pretty much the plot of the majority of Baekyeol smut fics out there. So what’s the problem in there. Well first, that Baekhyun is a slut and that being a slut is bad. Nothing wrong with being a slut. Next, the assumption that because Baekhyun is SHORTER than Chanyeol, he must always bottom (equating being gay with being a woman, and thus degrading both gay men and women in the same blow). Crying and begging in sex are also associated with stereotypes from heterosexual porn where the woman cries and is called a slut and begs the man with the monster dong to fuck her.
Being shorter does not mean a man will bottom for another man. Potentially having a smaller penis than another man does not mean he will bottom (not all men are size queens). Who tops and bottoms is not based on height, attractiveness, or muscle mass (all gender stereotyping, sexist, misogynistic). Not to mention all these “qualities” (ew) that writers base their fics on are exclusionary of transmen and transwomen. It is inherently fucked up.
But! Fetishization doesn’t end with sexualizing one person and stereotyping them into one particular sexual role. It also exists in the way you’ve made gay romance your pedestal where no “icky gay sex” exists. You’re essentially saying you have a problem with gay sex, but gay romance is fine. You are still guilty of the fetishization I have discussed up to this point. You have fetishized gay romance and excluded the sex because you don’t like it. Whether it’s because you’re coming to realize how fetishized and ugly the kpop fandom can be or because you’re inherently uncomfortable of dicks in butts because of homophobia, I can’t say. But I do challenge you to look at it deeper, because right now, it looks real bad.

Bea and I, With the Beatles Fanfiction Chapter 2
Same disclaimer as on the previous chapter.
About ten minutes later, this extraordinarily loud fart came from the back of the hall, halfway through the speech, and magnified because of the eerie quietness. It took two seconds for the entire hall to be laughing their socks off. There were even teachers trying to not die from not laughing up the front. The principal, though, was going a shade of purple with anger and embarrassment.
‘RIGHT! WHO WAS THAT?’ he yelled at the top of his voice, still going purple. The room fell dead silent, and I hid my book in case I was caught with it. Everyone was tense, and there was an air that we would be kept until someone owned up, and the person would not. But alas, a hand was held up, right at the back, and they immediately had every pair of eyes in the room upon them. ‘Jasper Kitchen. My office, at morning tea.’ Principal Summers snapped, and turned on his heel and walked back to the front. It seemed like every student wanted to burst into applause at that moment, but didn’t want trouble. Principal Summers went back to his dreary monologue.
‘He’s not in our year, is he?’ Paul whispered to me.
‘No, I think he’s a few grades below us or something. He’s no older than Arthur.’ I replied, also in whisper. Principal Summers finished his speech, and had still not turned back to a natural colour. A few announcements were made, and we were dismissed for first class. For Bea, Paul and I this was Geography, and for Ringo and John Mathematics, and George had English. We bid each other farewell until morning tea, and headed to different parts of the school. Rather than having Mr Putnam, we had a substitute called Miss Russel. She clearly didn’t know much more than us about it, and looking at her we could tell she was probably a sports teacher. She read out the roll and had trouble with my surname.
‘von Harreson… no that’s not right. Elizabeth von Ha…?’
‘It’s von Harrelson, Miss.’ I corrected her.
‘Rightcha.’ She said, and continued on with the roll. I began drawing in my book.
‘She might see that. She’s gonna be more observant than Mr Putnam.’ Bea said to me quietly, as she sat to the right of me. We had worked out how to write without bumping into each other; right-handed on the right, left on the left. And then switch hands when the teacher is looking, because if I don’t I’ll get the cane. Unfortunately, as I was pretending to write notes I didn’t notice that Miss Russel had turned around.
‘Miss von Harrelson, come up to the front please.’ She said while turning a page over. The room took a breath at that moment, and I paused before standing up and walking from the mid-back of the room to the teacher’s desk at the front. ‘Hold out your hand.’ I instinctively held out my right. ‘No not that one, the one you were using.’ She said, sounding slightly flustered. I did, and she hit me hard with the cane eight times. Eight has always been my unlucky number. I tried not to swear lest I get more caning.
‘Fuck she’s got a strong arm.’ I said quietly to Bea. ‘If she sees my handwriting she’d not be able to read it.’
‘Which hand?’
‘Either, they’re both illegible.’ I said slightly smirking. Class went on another long, boring fifteen minutes, and then we were released from that hell of a class. I grabbed out my morning tea of chocolate brownie, hiding my prized treat. It was the first thing I didn’t burn or undercook, which is why I don’t cook, but we needed morning tea this week and Amy was working. I put my coat on, and braved the cold with the gang.
‘Paul here says you got caned!’ Ringo said. ‘What for?’
‘Got caught writing.’ I replied.
‘I getcha. Bloody annoying, isn’t it? You two can’t help it.’ he said.
‘Hm.’ I replied, and tried to unwrap my brownie with my frozen fingers.
‘Hey, lemme help you with that.’ Paul said.
‘Err… thanks.’ I said, hoping he wouldn’t try and steal it.
‘Ah, lucky you!’ he said with a wink, handing it to me.
‘What’s she got?’ George asked. ‘Is that BROWNIE?!’ he exclaimed. George loves his food.
‘You’ve got brownie? You gotta share, man!’ John said.
‘No! My food!’ I said, trying to be serious, but failing and we all ended up wandering around the school. We were nearing the football pitch, and a few hardy souls were trying to have a match amongst the snowdrifts. Suddenly, one of them didn’t quite stop the ball and it came rolling towards us. I stopped it, and kicked it. It went quite far, but the goalie hadn’t really been paying attention and so didn’t realise until it was fractionally too late that the ball was actually going to go into the net. It hit the back net and bounced out again, and several people cheered, and I high-fived everyone. It was time to go back inside again, and the heaters barely heated the rooms, but we weren’t allowed to wear our coats. Bea and I had Sewing, my definitely least, and worst, subject. I would try and fix my gloves in this class, it wasn’t like I was going to finish the handkerchief set we’d been assigned to do anyway. That half hour dragged on for way too long, but it got slightly better because next we had English with Mr Wright, whose profession used to be an author until the war, but now he just settles on teaching English and making bad puns. His classes were always quite enjoyable, as the first twenty minutes were always reading, and the next forty minutes were usually interesting. He’s one of the more popular teachers. The next hour long class was Civics, which could be interesting but was generally boring. Once again, Paul was in our class for this. It was one of the ‘mildly interesting but boring’ lessons. As soon as we were released for lunch, we sprinted as fast as we could to put our stuff back and get in the queue for lunch. Fortunately, Paul, Bea and I got into line rather quickly, and got the measly ration of four fish fingers, fried bread, some chips and a bottle of orange juice, a rare luxury. We sat at our usual canteen table, waiting for the rest of the gang. George got in not too long after we sat down, and came to sit with us, but in silence as he was already eating. Ringo and John came rushing in two minutes later, and as they came over to sit down, Jasper Kitchen walked in, to immediate applause. John even went and patted him on the back. Turns out, he only got off with twenty cane lashes and extra homework for a week.
‘That’s not too bad for what he did, lucky bastard.’ John said as he sat down. ‘What’ve you got next?’
‘Well, it’s German for us, and then we all have Music until the end of the day.’ Bea said. ‘And I think George has Sport, and you?’
‘Well, I’ve got a free lesson, and I’m buggering off somewhere.’ John said. ‘But poor Ringo here has Science with Mr Gibbs!’ Mr Gibbs was this grumpy old shit of a teacher who was only still teaching because Principal Summers doesn’t want to lose his twin, or so the joke goes. We managed to get through our lessons, trying to work out how to swear in French (we’d already worked out German), or trying to work out how to get out of the class. One thirty came around, so Bea, Paul and I started running to Music, which is one of the only classes we ran to. Not many people were in the class, so the classes comprised of two grades. There was Bea, Paul, Ringo, George (who got special permission to join us, there weren’t enough in his grade), John and I, as well as Cyril Acker, in John and Ringo’s grade with Terry Garfield. In our year there was Belle Seward, Errol Hawkins, Graham Carpenter and Derrick Streets. Then the teacher, by far the best teacher in my opinion, and I guess the gang’s, and probably was the most qualified, Mr Eldridge. The class was in the new ‘Arts Wing’, which was much better than the shitty 1920’s classrooms of the ‘Academics Wing’ or the post-war slap-dash updating of the gym, and was actually not crap. Basically what happens in that class is we bugger around, doing stupid little songs and practicing for a gig or something, because we (I say we, because we sometimes go on stage with the boys and we’ve gone on one tour with them, over in Blackpool) were a band called the Silvers. It’s not the best name but it works.
‘So, what’s the lineup for Saturday?’ I asked, fiddling with my flute. The Silvers had scored a gig at the Cavern Club on my birthday.
‘So there’s a few songs…’ John showed me the list, as he was the band leader. He just was.
‘That’s not going to cover a night’s worth! You’ve gotta play for four hours!’ I exclaimed.
‘There’s one song we haven’t shown…’ Ringo started, but was glared at by George.
‘Y’know, if you’re short of songs, we could write some!’ Bea suggested.
‘That’s not a bad idea! Paul and I have already written some, so we’ve had experience, and you’re good at poetry, Lizzy, so it won’t be too much of a stretch for you, but I dunno about you guys though, just have a crack.’ John said, sounding slightly excited. ‘Use your books and rip it out later.’
We all sat with half the school’s guitars, three of them, and Ringo grabbed out his sticks, Paul tried to claim the piano but didn’t quite get it as Cyril Acker pushed him out of the way. John immediately began strumming away, George was experimenting with riffs and Paul began writing away. Bea also began busily scribbling. I put my pen to the paper, and soon started writing.
Some days, I hope to be far away.
Not right here or near, not today
If I stay here my mind might fray,
How I long not to stay.
‘That’s shit.’ I said to myself.

Geeks and gatekeeping: Discussing our favorite franchises without shutting out other fans
New Post has been published on https://esopodcast.com/geeks-and-gatekeeping-discussing-our-favorite-franchises-without-shutting-out-other-fans/
Geeks and gatekeeping: Discussing our favorite franchises without shutting out other fans
The Internet — and the rise of social media — has benefited geek culture in a number of ways. It’s now easier than ever to meet fellow geeks and discuss your favorite franchises, share podcasts/article links, stay up-to-date on the latest movie/TV announcements, and more. Thanks to social media, I’ve made some new friends that I might never have met in person if it wasn’t for geek Facebook discussion groups, podcasting, blogging, etc. I appreciate the connections that are made possible by technology.
However, we also can’t ignore the fact that the Internet and social media have provided a platform for toxic behavior from a small but vocal group of fans. Although they certainly don’t represent the majority, this group’s negativity is capable of doing real harm, such as the recent bullying of Star Wars actress Kelly Marie Tran. We also don’t know how much this negativity is driving away potential new fans of our favorite franchises.
Unfortunately, social media can facilitate discussion “echo chambers” that shut out certain opinions. I don’t know that I have a solution to some of these issues, but I think it’s important that as geeks we start talking about this and help to keep each other accountable, especially as geek culture continues to grow in popularity. Here are some thoughts on why gatekeeping is happening, and how we can work together to stop it.
‘You shall not pass!’
You’ve probably heard the buzzword “gatekeeping” by now; I see gatekeeping as fans engaging in behavior that seeks to limit or restrict who is a “real fan” and to unfairly define how a “true member” of a fandom should think/feel.
It’s never usually as direct as, say, “Anyone who disagrees that David Tennant is the best ‘Doctor Who’ actor should leave the fandom right now and never come back.” 😉 It’s usually more along the lines of, “True ‘Doctor Who’ fans appreciate the David Tennant seasons as the pinnacle of the franchise.”
On the surface, that last sentence doesn’t seem as damaging. In my own personal opinion, I do think the David Tennant seasons represent the best of the franchise. The problem is the qualifier “true ‘Doctor Who’ fans.” Anyone who likes “Doctor Who” has the right to call themselves a “true fan”; it doesn’t matter whether you prefer David Tennant, Peter Capaldi, Tom Baker, or any other Doctor. If you’re a fan, you’re a fan, and you should be welcomed in the community.
What is driving gatekeeping?
Although there are some mean-spirited fans out there who derive a twisted sense of enjoyment from bullying, many gatekeepers probably don’t even realize they are doing it. It’s easy to become attached to/passionate about our favorite franchises, and to feel some ownership in those franchises. However, it’s important for all of us (myself included) to remember that we don’t own those franchises, and we don’t get to define another fan’s experience with that franchise.
I think sometimes fans feel “protective” of their favorite franchises, especially when they get expanded/rebooted. I’ve seen comments online putting down fans of, for example, the rebooted J.J. Abrams Star Trek universe and the new Disney Star Wars films. I have spotted comments saying “as a true fan, I can’t stand where Disney is taking the Star Wars franchise,” etc.
It’s perfectly okay to like or dislike a film or TV show. People should be allowed to have a respectful discussion where they air their criticisms, and this can become a deep and meaningful conversation. Yet at the end of the day, an opinion is just an opinion, and there are a huge variety of thoughts out there regarding entertainment and what a franchise should or shouldn’t be.
Maybe there are fans out there who only like the Disney Star Wars films, and they’ve connected with these new movies in a way they never connected with Star Wars before. That is okay. If you like the Star Wars prequels, that’s still okay! As long as you are respectful to other fans, you should be free to enjoy what you enjoy. Or, if a franchise just isn’t speaking to you anymore, it’s okay to walk away, and you shouldn’t be pressured to stay in the fandom.
Keeping fandom fun
Something I’ve been trying to work on is just really listening to other fans and letting them share their passion. Like, even though I personally was disappointed by “Justice League,” I loved hearing from other fans about why they liked it and what that film meant to them. Then, hopefully this can lead to a back-and-forth discussion about our differing thoughts on the film. We may not agree in the end, but both of us can feel equally respected as superhero fans.
I’ve also been trying to avoid using the word “objectively,” even though it’s hard to do. 😉 I really want to say that the prequels are “objectively” the worst Star Wars movies, but at the end of the day, entertainment is really just subjective. Instead, I can maybe say that critical and fan consensus seems to indicate that the prequels are the lowest-quality Star Wars films, but if you liked them, you shouldn’t be kicked out of the fandom for that.
I think the best cure for gatekeeping is just keeping in mind that geekdom is this incredibly diverse, fun place, and it’s important to make sure that everyone feels safe and welcome. Geek culture has experienced this awesome explosion in popularity the past few years, with more and more people getting into sci-fi, fantasy, and superheroes. I hope this influx continues! 😊 Some of these new fans may become hardcore devotees; others may just remain casual fans. Both perspectives are okay, and the more casual fans shouldn’t feel as though they are less welcome.
So, what are your thoughts on this issue? Have you ever experienced gatekeeping? What do you think is the best way to address it?

Since he's so popular in Nigeria's political circles, there's no reason why God shouldn't be a candidate in the 2019 elections.
Many Nigerians believe that you cannot pray the country into a functional state, but they're very wrong. All we need to do as a country is elect God as president.
God has been a constant feature in Nigerian politics for so long that it's a wonder no one has considered Him for elective position(s) until now.
His stock has risen even higher in recent times as He keeps getting tacit endorsements from people already warming His seats for him.
In June 2018, with scores of people dying in Zamfara State due to violent killings that have been happening for months, the state's governor, Abdulaziz Yari, confessed that there isn't much he can do to curb the wanton loss of lives because he's not in complete control of security agencies.
As an alternative to a failure of leadership, the governor urged people of the state to be more faithful to God and embark on special prayers over the challenges they are facing.
If this says anything, it's that God can solve the insecurity mess that Nigeria has been plunged into for decades.
While speaking in May 2018, President Muhammadu Buhari lamented about how previous leaders mismanaged the country. Guess who he called upon to do something about it? (Hint: It was not his Attorney-General).
"Nigerians know that there were no roads or rail lines, there was no power, despite the billions of dollars spent. Only God will judge this thing," he said.
If this says anything, it's that God can fight this corruption war better than the incumbent promised.
With a section of the country convinced that President Buhari has fallen short of his promises, many are eager to vote him out while just as many are eager to see him continue for four more years.
It's quite telling that supporters and opposers of the president agree that his victory or defeat in the 2019 presidential election hinges on one very important person. (Hint: It's God)
"I want to assure you that by the grace of God, Muhammadu Buhari will become president the second time," said his Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, in April 2018.
Do you know who former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, believes will liberate Nigeria (from Buhari)? (Hint: You know!)
"It will not be easy to wrest powers from them. If you think it will be easy to liberate Nigeria, you are deceiving yourself, but the God that did it yesterday will do it again today," he said, with no trace of irony on his part.
The former president makes it indeed sound like this God has been working very well for Nigeria even without the privilege of elective office.
He has his Hands in literally everything.
He's there to provide relief when preventable man-made tragedies happen, or when government officials owe workers salaries, or when they get dragged to court for stealing (and/or suddenly get struck with some illness), or when they need to get elected, or when long-abandoned projects need to be finished with the power of divine faith, or when presidents travel abroad for medical treatment.
With such an incredible CV, many would agree that God appears to be the most qualified candidate Nigeria will possibly ever get!
The most interesting bonus about this all-powerful God is that He's also omnipresent. This means He can be the president at the same time He's the governor of all 36 states, the same time as being the Minister of This and the Minister of That, as well as be Senator Change or Senator Transformation, as well as be Honourable Federal and Honourable State, all the way down to being the chairman of each and every 774 local government areas of the country.
To speak to this God in His capacity as a political office holder, as an ordinary citizen, you don't have to fight through an army of personal assistants and personal assistants to the personal assistants; all you have to do is pray and he's there listening to your complaint about why you think his government has to obey the doctrine of federal character and to stop throwing all the juicy appointments the way of angels only.
What exactly can he not do?
He doesn't have particular love for corrupt leaders; He can build roads in hours; He can provide uninterrupted power supply without billions spent on power projects; He can undo tragedies with the sheer political will; and He can do all these...forever. It's like creating paradise without having to be dead to (probably) enjoy it.
When Obasanjo launched another one of his scathing criticisms of Buhari's administration two months ago, the president's blow horn, Garba Shehu, said he was a blessing sent from God.
"The loud voices of critics with selfish ambitions and ulterior motives should not be a veil that keeps Nigerians blind to the many ways God has blessed us and improved our lot through the Buhari administration," he said.
On the evidence of what many Nigerians now feel about this 'blessing', maybe it's time for God to finally put Himself forward for elective position(s) and overwhelm the deceptively self-proclaimed Giant of Africa with the actual greatness that's not falling out of the mouths of charlatans.
With God as a political office holder (hopefully, of many positions) in Nigeria, the question is not "What can he do?" It's more, "Is it possible to die from all this enjoyment you're killing us with?"
I think the possibilities are limitless, and this is why He has my vote for 2019: the year of divine intervention.
