hmmm usually the tip would be to practice but I'd say it's to know where to start first, do you like drawing a specific part ? do you struggle in any area ? it's a good place to start !

remember tho: you dont have to do perfect pieces every time, i figured that it's more fun yo just do doodles cause it's not perfect and pressuring, sometimes a doodle can be so good that you just take it and continue it (this is kinda like thumbnailing but unlike thumbnail u kinda just accidentally created something from nothing rather than having a goal in mind)

if you like drawing a particular part, draw it over and over either as a warm up or to pull yourself out of art block, art is fun when you're good at something so there's nothing more satisfying and uplifting than being reminded what your strengths are

if you struggle on a particular spot (anatomy, hands, composition, ect...) its great to look up tutorial or watch speedpaint !! it depends on the person but when you watch speedpaint or see tutorial, it kinda motivate you to draw and improve, plus you can always figure out which technique works for you ! the trick is to draw the same thing over and over until your muscle memories improve and by that time you've already figured out what you're doing qnd move on to the next part !

i also suggest tracing your favourite artists, don't post or claim it as yours, just trace it to study their strokes, how they do each part and what kind of shapes they do so you know what to do !

definitely take breaks when you need to, im taking breaks rn due to artblock and burnt out to do something else and it rlly improve ur efficiency cause youre not stressed

have fun ! when you're learning how to draw enjoy the process and if you dont, take a break. putting pressure onto yourself and constantly feeling discouraging can affect your art too so make sure to take your time on it cc:

23. do you listen to music or watch shows while you work? If so, what’s your favourite?

i listen to music and watch youtube! any music, it usually depends on just what i want to listen to. sometimes pieces r inspired by particular songs / albums, so i listen to that. otherwise, arcane on netflix or pearfleur on youtube are what i put on in the background if i want to watch smth instead of just listen to music. both put me in creating / drawing moods!

24. how do you deal with artblock?

i don't REALLY amsdmfamsdfmmed i mean i usually only draw when i feel like it (which is smth i need to work on tbh) and i don't have a set or dedicated posting schedule / demand so i just kind of go with it. sometimes if there's smth i need / want to draw and it's just not coming to me, i just keep going at it until it clicks--usually thumbnail / planning sketches, pieces of it so i can get the whole right, pose or expression practice, that kind of thing. i've found that if i really want to complete a piece tho, i need to find a dedicated chunk of time, like 4 or 5 hours, and put on a song that has the kind of feel i want the piece to, and just bang it out

I’m genuinely surprised at all I was able to accomplish after taking a break from fandom and then kinda coming back full speed in September. I can’t even begin to imagine what the rest of this year would’ve turned out had I decided not to throw my hat in the ring. If I decided to just go ahead and post my first story, I wouldn’t nearly be as happy as a creator and I’m so grateful every day for the friends that I have made and continue to make on this platform.

Hey :) I've been looking at your blog and first off, wow. Second, you're really good at digital drawing and I'm trying to get better at digital drawing but I can never seem to get the lines straight or the colours even and in the lines. So if it's not too much trouble, could you maybe tell me what app you use or what brushes you prefer? I'm currently using ibisPaint X and I'm drawing with a sketchpad :) it would really help if you gave me some tips too! Thank you!! Also, you're really talented hehe

Hi there, I'm glad you like my art thank you so much! ; u ; <3 And sorry for the late reply, I wanted to write up a full response with some examples!

So for my artwork, I use almost exclusively Paint Tool SAI. I specifically use the original SAI atm, though I want to try using SAI 2 more (the brushes just feel... different. I've been using SAI for a decade now, so it's where I'm most comfortable.) SAI does cost money, but there are also free alternatives online as always. I'm not familiar with IbisPaint X, but I know that FireAlpaca and Krita are two good free options. I don't use a smart tablet or apps to draw, though, so I'm not sure what are the best options outside of PC.

As for brushes, I use three brushes for my lineart-- though 2 of them much more than the third. The first brush I use is my Marker brush. I've been using this brush to line my work for a very long time. It's thin and somewhat transparent (sometimes I copy-paste my lineart a couple of times to bulk out the transparency).

The second brush I named TEST when I made it and I just never changed it, so it's my very permanent TEST brush. It's sort of similar to my marker brush (it even uses the SAI marker brush base), but it's thicker and a little more ragged. I tend to change up my style when I use this brush.

The third brush I use for lines is not one of my "lining" brushes. It's a painting brush named GREGORY and I Mostly use it to paint backgrounds and details in fur. I change up the "blending" setting on it as needed. I usually only use this brush to line if I'm having artblock or am sketching around.

As for keeping lines straight, I honestly just gotta say-- there's tricks to cheat the system! The first, easiest thing is you can find the "stabilizer" setting on your art program, slide that bad boy up, and have some assistance with keeping your strokes smoother.

The second thing you can do is... not really "line" your artwork. I tend to fight with lineart a lot. Sometimes it's not so bad (especially with my TEST brush), but a lot of the time I just line something and hate the end result, if I can even push myself to finish it. So, instead of "lining" over my sketch layer, I just... make the sketch my lines.

My sketches are usually pretty detailed so I think that helps, but I basically just erase and go over the lines meticulously in small increments until I'm left with linework. And if I'm having trouble with a spot, I'll just make a new layer, "properly" line that spot, erase the section of the sketch under it, and then merge the layers and move onto the next section. (I also keep my fingers over my undo and redo hotkeys, since a lot of lining can be just undoing a mistake and redoing it until you like it.)

For example, here's this dragon I've been working on, in its original sketch:

And here it is halfway through the cleanup process, where you can see an amalgamation of clean lines amid the remaining sketch:

And here's how it looks now:

Lines won't cooperate? Make friends with the sketch! I often feel like it's easier to keep the personality of the original sketch when I do this also, though that's just personal preference.

Now as for keeping colour inside your lines, Layers and layer settings are your friends-- that and the magic wand tool (which is a selection tool).

When I use the magic wand tool, I tend to select the area Outside of my drawing first

If there's a hole in my lines and I'm having trouble finding it, I cut a line across the drawing and use the magic wand tool again so I can see which section of the drawing the linebreak is in and fix it.

Once the lines are sealed, I invert my selection so it's inside the lines rather than outside! I prefer to start outside since I find it easier than individually selecting the inner parts of the drawing. It's worth mentioning that the magic wand tool is not perfect (especially if you have sketchy, ragged lines like I often do), so you might have to clean up the edges.

You can make layers under your linework that you can freely draw on without disturbing your lines, and they will conform to your magic wand selection as well. What more, though, you can also make clipping layers/groups which are layers that affect only the pixels below them.

So like in this example here there are four layers. There's the lineart layer, the layer for the base fur colour, a layer for the details (beak, eyes, white spots), and then there's a clipping layer that is on top of the details layer.

Anything I draw on that clipping layer can only appear on pixels directly below it. This is useful for a lot of things like detailing and shading. It also means you can safely exit out of your magic wand selection and still remain in your perimeters.

You can also lock layers which is like using a clipping layer, only you're affecting that actual layer instead of going over it. Whichever one you want to use is pretty much just personal preference or situational. You can also use these layer settings to colour in your lines, if that's something you want to do!

I especially love your use of colors and textures :) Everything is so bright and colorful, but still cohesive. And your images are so clear without being overly detailed! It’s all literally perfection!!!

Hey!! So first of all thank you so much for everthing you said about my art, I really appreciate it! But also omg thank youuu for this amazing ask like this is for real the kind of ask I've always wanted to get, where a total stranger is interested in my process XD So yeah don't worry about asking a lot of questions, they were great and I loved them!

Also I'm super flattered that my art has inspired you in your own digital art journey and I hope the stuff I say here can also help somewhat! This will get pretty long so sorry in advance everyone for making you scroll so much cause for some reason the read more option doesn't work on mobile :/

But anyway to answer your questions!

Sadly I don't have videos but I do have some pics I'll share. This is actually my second attempt at answering this because before I was going to use some WIP pics of the Majid drawing as example but then I didn't want to because it was in black and white and color is kind of one of the main things I like to emphasize in my art so I wanted to talk about it in the example XD Then I started a couple new drawings and was taking pics of those but I got super artblocked, but luckily I just finished one out of the blue that I can use. Okay so... I started answering this, again, and it was getting way too long and rambly so I'm gonna try to keep it simple this time and maybe I can elaborate more another time if you're still interested/ if anyone else wants know X'D

My process in general: I always start by making a simple basic background to work on, just fill it in and add some blotches of color. Then on a new layer I just start painting the subject, no sketch, so again just laying down some colors (I usually take whatever color in the bg is closest to skin tone and adjust the new color from there) and I just start blocking some shapes in aproximately the right places to start defining where things will be and how they fit together and just go from there. It's hard to explain it more cause that's kinda it, I just paint until things look like they're supposed to or at least visually appealing enough XD I add or adjust whatever colors seem necessary along the way (in this particular drawing I left the darker values until way too late which I don't recommend) and just refine and refine and refine things and add as many or as few details as I feel like, working on everything simmultaneously bit by bit.

Layers: like I mentioned before there's no sketch, and I try to use as few layers as possible so usually I'll have about 3-5. One for the basic background, one to three (though sometimes I merge them) additional layers for more background effects/colors/value fixes that I usually add later in the process, and I try to have just one for the subject. Sometimes I have one or two more if I'm feeling too hesitant but I always merge them in the end.

Brushes: I only use one brush at 50% opacity the whole time for everything. It's a squarish/rectangular brush that has some sort of jagged edges and a bit of a watercolory texture.

Tips: so this part is especially hard cause like.. I feel like any tips I could give are only applicable to drawing portraits and even then it'd be for doing it in the particular way that I prefer.. Like for example I could say it's best to work on every area at the same time and never spend too long one thing before moving on to the next but.. some people actually prefer finishing the eyes completely before moving on to the nose for example you know? So honestly the main thing I'll say is kinda to just experiment with a lot of methods and styles and see what works or doesn't work for you. Something that I think always helped me a lot was watching speedpaints of people who were more skilled than me and had a distinct style, just literally watch how they did their thing and every once in a while I might notice something I'd be interested in trying for myself and yeah with practice and experience you just kinda figure out what kind of things you not only like seeing but actually want in your own art. Like years ago I used to sketch but then I saw enough videos of people painting without sketching that I wanted to try it and I realized it's just more fun and makes more sense to me that way. So yeah try lots of different things and see what works for you and what you want to incorporate into your own art style!

Some more standard digital art tips I could give I guess are like.. the thing I said about not spending too much time on just one area (if it applies to your prefered process XD). Flip the drawing every now and then to catch stuff that's off. Stay zoomed out as much as possible and when you do zoom in for details always keep an eye on how the bigger picture's looking. Take your time finding or arranging a good reference pic that really inspires you cause it'll save you time and frustration later. And aaa idk I could say more but I don't think it's that informative or helpful, and all of this is probably really basic obvious stuff anyway and this is long enough as it is so yeah I'll leave it there...

I hope any of this can help in some way or that I've at least answered your questions in a satisfying enough way haha And finally here are some of the WIP pics I took. Where you can see some parts of the process. I did a lot more after that last pic but yeah at that point it's just about fixing little things, refining and adding details, but there you can see the color adjustment thing I usually do as the very last step (though not for this pic). I don't always have to do it, and there are probably times when I shouldn't, but I almost always like to do it anyway and that's why my colors look so exaggerated and bright XD I usually make the midtones more red and/or magenta, the shadows more blue, and the highlights more yellow (and sometimes a bit cyan) but if you wanna try something like that it's definitely fun to experiment with the different color possibilities ;u;

hi! i have a problem with drawing. right now i have artblock and yesterday i tried to draw something like 3 times, but i can't do anything. i try to somehow calm myself so that i don't get hysterical. and, of course, i tried to find something about it in internet, but i found nothing. why people don't talk about art struggles, mental struggles and emotional burnout? what to do if you can’t draw because you’ll get hysterical or anxious at the end of the process?

Hmm… I don’t really know your situation, I don’t know if it’s because you draw too much (for school/job), feel some social media pressure, or if it’s just this “I can’t draw for shit” stage that every artists seems to have from time to time.

The anxiety when you don’t produce art might be overwhelming. You draw and nothing comes out right. People post beutiful art every day and are successful with their zines, comics, books. They get featured, they’re hired, they are a part of big projects! And you can’t draw the pose right, it’s stiff and you know the lineart will look even worse. People won’t like it, you’re such a disappointment. It makes you want to scream. It’s a horrible feeling. I know that feeling. But… to quote the classic: “Let it go!” \(u-u)/

Take a deep breath. (´ο`)=3

My advice (I’m not sure if useful) would be to stop drawing for a week or so. Do something else, watch some new series, go for a walk, read books you haven’t read yet, try some games, definitely try something new. If you were in a particular fandom and created for it or drew inspiration from it - stop. You’ll feel itchy and will try to draw but don’t. And don’t feel guilty about it! You need to recharge, so instead of producing stuff try to comsume something new. Enjoy it.

Then try to draw but don’t expect anything. Find a few photos, very simple ones, of the sky, field, something not too complicated and study colours, try to draw with big shapes, blocks of colour, don’t expect it to look good, it’s just a study. It’s about reigniting the curiosity and pleasure of creating. When you try to draw something more complicated treat it as a study, a sketch, a stage. Draw something you’ve never drawn before, design a chair. Focus on the chair and not on the feeling you should be drawing something else and it’s just a waste of time, it isn’t. Draw a few thumbnails, you don’t like it, start a new one until your hand gets loose and you start to get some new ideas. If it’s getting too frustrating go for a walk, or dance to your favourite song.

(Also, go to people who inspire you, not those who make you feel shitty about your art. I’m not talking about negativity or toxic people. Some artists are the best human beings and they are very good at what they do but sometimes they make you feel not good enough. It’s not true, and it’s not their fault, but it happens. So sometimes it’s good to find someone who doesn’t overwhelm you with their detailed artworks, huge followers count, achievements etc.)

Allow yourself to make bad art. You won’t escape from it. All the art you see on the internet was chosen by artists for you to see. And there are tons of shitty drawings on their computers and in sketchbooks they chose not to show. Sometimes you open your canvas and this is your end result for the day:

And there’s one thing I suppose is very important if you want to fight art axiety. Don’t think about the drawings you made before, they’re done. Don’t think about the drawings you will do, you should do, or you want to do. Open the canvas, draw not thinking about the result, don’t expect it to be good or bad. To quote another classic: “Be in the moment.” Don’t be scared to ruin your drawing with the wrong line, try a different option and allow yourself to be surprised with the result. The result is bad, well, tough. What does it change, you won’t post it online? Who said you have to? Draw for yourself, not for other people, not for followers (don’t share your art with a big audience for some time, even if it’s good), not even your inner critic. Discover rather than force the outcome.When you draw a line don’t think about the final result, think about what that one line does for the drawing in that very moment.

And if you find yourself panicking about your art my ask box is always open, we can chat about art and exchange doubts. I’ve been drawing all my life, but I post so little work since I don’t want to show how little my art has improve over the years....until Overwatch, noodles, and beans. I did play overwatch for about 6 months until I decided I want to draw something. During early 2016 I was in the last semester of my college year. Since it was art school, I’ve been drawing every single day, trying to finish my final project, drawing stuff I don’t really enjoy that much... Plus being surrounded by people with much more talent and skills than me...I was so depressed and burnt out...I thought that I want to stop drawing....but can’t since I don’t have any other skill to survive ; u ; .....I hit a massive artblock. It’sssss not really my thing actually - well, generally I’m a picky shipper with Bakugou anyway, not gonna lie, but the only interaction Baku and Shinsou ever had made it pretty clear Shinsou can’t stand him and I usually don’t ship Bakugou with people that don’t like him ??? A good concept which I’m always up for, but to be honest with you I’m more of a fan of the other way around :O like, Kiri is so good and bright and friend with everyone, jealousy might as well be something Bakugou’s used to by this point - but Bakugou, people tend to avoid him or think of him as rude and annoying, Kirishima wouldn’t be used to jealousy at all you know? So I like it that way around more haha

I wouldn’t call it an artblock, it’s more like… like your mind is one step ahead of your skills, I’d say. If treated right, you can turn that feeling into improving your art! What is it that you don’t like? Can you break it down to smaller things? Is it the line work or the coloring style, or even just the way you draw eyes or hands or noses? If you can focus on the smaller parts of what you don’t like in your style you can then look up a way to do the same thing that you do like, and practice that till you’re satisfied with it! One small thing might not mean much by itself, but putting all these small things together is how you make improvement happen :D

Whooo another year is almost over!! What a mess of a year really... I’m glad it’s done @A@ anyway!! Lots of Kidlaw & ulquihime... basically only them...  Some rumbling under the cut ♥

This has been a long year for me and I had to spend most of the time working on commissions. I also had ( and still have) quite a lot of personal issues IRL, health, family and finances are all been a big deal for me, especially in the last months... hopefully next year will be better ; u ;  For now I will try to focus on finish all the work I still own to people and the zines I applied for, and there’s still lots of things I want to work on but time is always too cruel with me T^T wish me good luck!  I think I’ve sketched like 3-4 dj that I still haven’t get around to even start >A< but someday... I will. I definitely will!! And I know I’ve been neglecting my old projects, but I don’t want to fuck things up just for the sake of producing if I know I won’t do any good.... better something nice later that lots of mediocre/bad things soon. At least that’s how I feel.  I’d love to end this thinking I’m at least getting better at art but tbh I think I’m a bit lost rn and can’t really tell myself what’s good and what’s not in my own art... maybe next year I will finally be able to beat the artblock and this horrible feeling of not being good enough that has been haunting me in the last year... Nevertheless, I’m still kicking and I’m not going to give up that easily, drawing is still my life and no matter what I’ll keep going forward.

Art Block?

Well lemme tell you I am in no way an expert but I made this little list a while ago of ways to help so I’ll share it and hope it helps someone!

here's a bunch of art challenges! they all last a long time but of course u could just pick nd choose from the challenges u like. link sometimes when i can't find like any inspiration or whatever to draw i'll just practice general skills bc i know i'd never get around to it anyways. so here's another masterpost of how to draw stuff! link tho if u really want to like draw draw something, what i do is i find a song that i currently really like or like that i feel i could draw to. then i go and i flip through this(link is at the end) website until i find a palette i like and listen to the song (or a playlist of songs) while just kind of slapping whatever i feel like would convey the song onto the canvas, following the palette, and it usually turns out okay. link aaand holy hell here's a buncha art prompts! this is like a 10/10 site when i either have artblock or am just too lazy to like actually draw something or think of ideas to sketch about lol. it also has a buncha different categories which is nice. link finally here are oc drawing prompts. you might have to dig through other content on the blog but there r good suggestions there too, for example, 'Draw two of your OCs with swapped palettes.', or the asagurble's drawing challenge on the second page. link
