the last few episodes of persephone moping around have felt like less of a self-reflective moment for her to grow and change and more rachel griping about criticism and surrounding herself with yes men

this isn't gonna be in any way a formal essay like my usual sort, more of a slam post honestly, so fair warning that i'm gonna be a little salty here

EPISODE 263 SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!

but seriously, it's been a pity party of greek proportions because this constant "woe is me" shit with persephone that's constantly met with "no queeen you're amazing and perfect" has been going on for DAYS (real time and comic time)

literally every episode since the comic returned has had some segment of either persephone or hades (or both) being upsetti spaghetti over their current situation because oh nooo persephone made the deal with erebus and had to sacrifice something. even though they both knew that was gonna happen and yet she did it anyways. so she just continues to lock herself away in her mansion and spout adorkable quips while her husband, mother, and colleagues deal with the mess she caused.

and of course there's the constant inclusion of apollo spitting straight facts about persephone being a terrible queen and person, but of course because it's apollo saying it, it's not meant to be taken as gospel, essentially clapping back at the words of the critics who call out persephone for being a shitty and toxic protagonist by putting those words into the mouth of a literal rapist.

and yeah episode 263 had a lot of the same shit, to the point that you could literally swap out the names of the characters and the words they were speaking and it applies exactly to rachel and the corner she put herself in u.u it's been a thing for a while now that apollo has just felt like a mouthpiece for LO criticism but as mentioned by users within the subreddit during the discussion of this newest episode, it's never felt more apparent than now.

so yeah enjoy this satirical text edit of a sequence from the newest FP episode, which I honestly can't tell is meant to satirize the critical community or Rachel's reactions to the critical community because the weird reality this comic and its community exist in has just become that wack that it's hard to believe it's not directly from The Onion sometimes LMAO

-and as much as i find myself empathizing with the pressure that rachel is surely under right now - no one should have to be subject to the screeching howls of the peanut gallery - i can't help but be reminded of the memes and tweets she's put out that basically outright say "persephone is supposed to be celebrated for being a shitty person, if you can't handle her at her worst you don't deserve her at her best 💅"-

-and how often she's ruined her own day looking for critical groups or people with the "wrong opinions" that were minding their own business, or how much she's stifled her own community's attempts to discuss the story openly by having her mods ban anyone with even so much as a question regarding persephone's integrity.

so yeah, as much as i can empathize with her from one creator to another that being under this amount of pressure and scrutiny must be immensely frustrating and exhausting, beyond that one similarity i just can't empathize or relate to this mindset of almost learned helplessness that's taken a firm grip over her writing. this is the story she wants to tell and by all means no one is entitled to make her stop, but if she's gonna keep using her greek myth "retelling" comic that's trying to be "feminist" as a mouthpiece for her own griping over criticisms that are largely on-point and justified - to the point of putting the words of her critics into the mouth of her token villain like she's playing some single player barbie doll "act out that fight that sounded cooler in your head" game - then she's gonna keep getting called out, full stop. i figured she didn't have any nose left to rip off in spite of her face but apparently not.

look, i get it, there are some opinions and behaviors within the critical community that even i'm not on board with. there are people who absolutely take shit too far on both sides of the fandom, and i think both sides need to do more to hold themselves accountable for how they interact with each other, the comic, and rachel herself. i make it a point to keep my shit in my own house, i'm not entitled to rachel's attention and frankly it's the last thing i want because i have a lot of fun here and i don't want that to be potentially ruined or dampened! but if you come into my house and complain about the decorating, then i legitimately don't know what to tell you. i used to love LO and i'm so sad for my past self knowing fully well they're not gonna be able to wholeheartedly enjoy this comic forever due to how manipulative and shitty the storytelling has become. a story that i once connected to as an AFAB who was a victim of assault and abuse and generational trauma.

if persephone being the true main villain in her own story was ever meant to be the point of Lore Olympus, then it's taken way, way too long to get to that point, and rachel herself definitely doesn't seem to be of the mindset that that's what she's become with all of her blasé meme'ing on a plot arc that she's still expecting us to take seriously. persephone was never a very complex character to begin with - being an easy self-insert for the audience and rachel to project themselves onto and relate to - but at least in the beginning she felt like she had so much legitimate potential, she was naive but put her best foot forward and clearly wanted to make a life for herself, made by herself.

now she's just mean. jaded and mean. dependent on the constant validation of others to the point of being manipulative. an absolute shell of a person who can only grow a spine when she's punching down on people weaker than her, completely incapable of standing up to the people who are a legitimate threat to her. it's not empowering, it's not subversive, it's just another pick me story about women pitting themselves against other women and never taking accountability for their own behavior, mistakes, and deliberate actions meant to hurt others, often teetering on the line of straight up narcissism all for the sake of a "boss babe" moment.

anyways, if you want an actual well-written and GOOD scene of an empathetic female protagonist struggling to find their footing in adulthood being called the fuck out for their learned helplessness behavior, go read Tamberlane, it tackles this topic much better through its main character who keeps using her brokenness as an excuse to never do better, it slaps and it's so real.

Tbh i didn't think about how effectively having a bloodborne disease would affect the threat of a werewolf bite 👀 I'll have to add that to his argument. Excuse me while i ✏️✏️✏️✏️

(And yes! The human commoner! Because Novhen's Joining got moved up so far on the timeline in his canon, i'm going to end up bringing Ainsley in. From the mod description, i think the modder might've made up the name themself, but i'm still taking it XD That way, there's still a third person to accompany Daveth and Jory, and we can now get 3/3 Joining deaths! An auspicious prelude to the battle yet to come!)

It's a bit terrible that Novhen feels completely justified in how far he went while scouting, and given that he only stopped once he triggered a location-based cutscene, i guess he's not technically entirely wrong. But he really should've come back sooner. I can feel the arguing boiling up, perfectly setting up the stage for a fight, yes!

Novhen: What do you think a scout does?

Astala: A scout tell us what to expect ahead. A scout doesn't try to handle it all by himself.

Astala: It doesn't matter what you intended. What matters is that you did get caught.

Novhen: And I talked my way out of it. If getting found matters, so does that. The way you act, you'd think I couldn't be allowed to step ten feet away from the party before I had to report back!

I think it's a fair assessment that Adaia would be some flavor of disappointed at Novhen endangering himself so recklessly for others. Really goes to show that you can teach whatever lesson you want, but you can't control what lesson is actually learned. The lesson Novhen really internalized is that it's up to him to protect the alienage, but he doesn't seem to also get that, as part of the alienage, he also must be protected. Even from the most pragmatic of view points, he's no good to anyone dead. Maybe if they had just a little more time with her before or if she at least didn't die the way she did

Novhen didn't register who killed Adaia beyond them being guards, so he wouldn't have been able to get a revenge without destroying the entirety of the city guard, which wasn't very realistic. It's entirely plausible for the perpetrators to still be kicking around Denerim, perfectly murderable. Who's up for a little family bonding exercise ���?

Bonus for Alistair's efforts in not listening: he's probably got a very different accent than them. He was raised in the West Hills, and the Tabrises are from an insulated community in a city on the other side of the country. It's going to be very easy for him to not listen in when they all puts their minds to it XD

Most Alfish-speakers are probably also fluent in Fereldan, so it would make sense for Ilanlas to prioritize learning Fereldan. But i'm now imagining Ilanlas, who is fluent in a Dalish language and a has had the smallest amount of Fereldan lessons, trying so very hard to piece together what their argument is about. Every once in a while, he thinks he hears a word he recognizes but not much more. Could they please slow down, he's trying to eavesdrop XD This clearly isn't the language lesson they're meant to give him, but they do say immersion is the most effective way to learn XD XD XD

I remember city elves in Origins having American accents, and in keeping with Novhen (and city elves more broadly) being Jewish-coded, i headcanon Denerim's elves as speaking with a Brooklyn accent. It's also just a fun accent. I do draw on a few more sources for Novhen's word choice, but the accent is Brooklyn. Also, Shianni with a New York accent? It just fits. Accents are also however the sort of thing we can just gloss over to ignore any potential worldstate conflict lol. I think Sera's accent being the odd one out from the rest of the Denerim alienage can be related to her distancing herself from her being an elf

Novhen would be very interested in popping in on the Dalish lessons but even more so would definitely take great offense to being called culturally assimilated to humans. Shows what Ilanlas knows of the world that he thinks either side of the alienage wall is only differentiated by the amount of poverty present. He'll remind him that their common ancestors didn't live in aravels but rather cities up until Orlais and its Chantry stole the Dales

It… might take a while for him to be allowed back at language nights after that. These two, i swear…

It's probably not information available to him, but could you imagine if Novhen knew about the Dalish being descended from the nobles of the Dales and their knights XDXD

It might have to fall on Astala to inform Ilanlas that they're speaking Trade and Fereldan for the group's benefit, but city elves do still speak their own elven language

Admittedly, a lot of Novhen's Andraste-was-an-elf argument hinges a lot on the idea of "How many humans do you know of who would stick their necks out for an elf when they could've gotten away with just saving themselves?" ^_^', but i wonder how it might evolve once they meet Andras. Specifically, would they think the name Andras came from Andraste (the equivalent to being named Christian) or that they share an (elven!!) etymology. Novhen for one thinks "Andraste" could very well be a contraction of "Andruil'enaste"

Also, this is just a meta level note from me tha he would mean nothing to him even if he were somehow able to access it, but Andraste is a suggested name for a female elf in the DND 5E PHB js:

If Inquistor [mumbles name indistinctly] ever shows up post-Trespasser to recruit Novhen after somehow finding out about his knowledge of the lore (but hopefully not about his religious affiliations) (Leliana might've shared about many of his campfire stories featuring the Dread Wolf not realizing about the particular position he's in.), Novhen is desperately trying to get out of this. He's still processing all of this new information about Fen'Harel. He does not need to get involved in a war over it. They expect him to immediately believe stories of his historically maligned god planning to end the world? Especially with all the conflicting information flying around, if he's forced to join, it may well be on Solas's side. He's going to dart eyes at Astala and beg for help as subtley as he can. Sorry, ser. You heard her. We're retired.

And i just thought of this, but i could see Morrigan objecting their planned party on the basis of lacking a mage ("No, the golem does not 'make up for it'.") and saying that she has her ways of stalling the Taint. They don't really have a way to refute that. Astala and Ilanlas have firsthand experience with similar stalls. Still, Novhen is very opposed to the idea of her throwing herself into danger unnecessarily like that (Not a nice feeling, is it, Novhen?)

Also, i can see how in Astala's canon, Sulri being present would only make Bhelen more on edge about Astala's apparent indecision. Regardless of Sulri's intentions, they did not part ways on the best of terms, so it'd make sense for him to be nervous seeing her. Novhen might use that as another argument against Ilanlas joining on the expedition (besides the arrow thing). He's also heard about his recruitment went down and may be worried about how the caves would affect him. Not the most exciting situation to be proven right in

I don't know if there's anything Astala can offer besides her company that will give Novhen any sort of calm, but he at least knows better than to get drunk in the Deep Roads. Once they return to Orzammar, he'll probably still refrain from getting black out drunk because they still have to survive until the next Assembly. That's something

And you're right that he wouldn't want golems to go back into production. A pair of city elves would know exactly how demand for warm bodies would be filled, and they aren't having any of it

It's also good to hear that Novhen's influence has spared Astala from an assassination attempt XD Even if Astala were still trying to play both sides here, Novhen would make it very clear to Bhelen before leaving that they intend to name him king

So in addition to all the other non-Warden companions, that leaves… Alistair and Ilanlas in Orzammar. Oh, they are having the Worst girls' nights (gender neutral). Are they agreed that the politics are the worst part of the job? And this would be before Zevran is willing to admit to himself that he's fallen for the Warden, right? Zev's just going through all of these strong emotions, head in his hands, in complete denial of the source of these anxieties being that he's starting to care for Astala, who's been absent in the Deep Roads for over a month now

Apparently, there's some throwaway line in Inquisition from Alistair that he was hunting down leftover darkspawn in the Thaw Hunt after the Blight. I only know that from the wiki though. I imagine he's spending this time with Kader and Andras to excuse how they're absent from Awakening but still alive later to keep tabs on Tabris. Caron travels with Mhairi the twins to Vigil's Keep because you seem to need a mage for the Joining. Don't quote me on that

It sounds like Khêd and Novhen have a good basis for a potential friendship then! Probably enough so that someone just got recruited to fight the Mother~ Sorry, mate. Double-edged sword. I just hope the friendship would actually pan out if they ever interacted XD

I doubt the concept of scouts (in the sense of how girl scouts do it) really exists in Thedas, but Pavle is going to be requesting some form of acknowledgement for his progress. Apparently, the reward of knowing how to fend for himself is not enough. And now Radka's wanting something too. Great. Novhen would have learned enough basic naturalism skills while travelling with Duncan and Alistair before the Blight, but he's going to sit in on the lessons anyway because he knows it's not his strength without technically being part of those lessons. He might even embroider badges to occupy his hands during ;D And now you don't have to deal with them asking for rewards. You're welcome, Ilanlas. History books are going to look back at this as the birth of the Grey Scouts XD XD

It's really hard to say which of Radka's faces is more of a mask than the other. It's likely both to an extent, but she's worn the Carta mask for so long, she struggles to tell it apart from her true self

And i think Astala would be able to notice Novhen spiraling. There's a difference between being able to hide your feelings (which he could probably still pull off to some degree, even from her) and being able to hide a change in behavior. After Broken Circle, he might just listen to her pleas to stop too

❤ If she was passionate enough, she would physically stop you from going to work. Being an Ultimate, she could also call in to your job, using her status to sway them to get you to work less.

❤ Her eyes stay on you.

❤ She will pretend to be tired, asking you to assist her to bed, and then she holds you while you sleep next to her. She stays awake. She likes it when you sleep - she can stare at you no matter how close she gets. This is how she gets you calmer.

❤ She thanks you whenever you listen to her. Because genuinely, she is extremely grateful that she doesn't have to use force to get what she wants.

❤ Junko might come over and try to help her since she's better at people. She would try to convince you to quit - to which Mukuro is like no, that's not the goal here.

❤ But to be fair if you did want a new job, they literally can get you one instantly.

❤ She makes sure you eat, that you still drink, that you shower and brush your teeth. These are the things she cares about. She believes that if you take care of yourself that your mental health can't get worse - but if you need special treatment towards something specific, she's all ears. She loves taking orders.

❤ Goes on rambles about how to handle stress in an healthy way. She thinks about your health all the time. Taking care of people is like one of the only things she's confident about. So when it comes to you being tired because of your job, she makes sure you eat a bunch of good foods and drinking a lot of water before making you go to sleep at least 9 hours before your shift. She's not often assertive, but if you argue with her then she will get very feathered and upset. You're going to start stressing her out.

❤ She's going to be your doctors note for your work to stop making you go overtime lmfao. She'll make sure you are going home on time.

❤ She has things that will help you go to sleep faster, as well as things to prevent headaches - things to help convert food to energy.

❤ Sometimes she'll jokingly say doctor's orders, and the smile she has when she does is so cute.

❤ She'll give you advice on how to relax yourself - she works at hospitals, she knows a bunch about overworking and overtime. She lets you know that if you ever want to just rant about it that you can text her any time of the day. She is always here to talk to you.

❤ And she's always here to give you kisses and welcome you with open arms when you come home.

❤ She likes holding you into your chest when the two of you are sleeping together. She always be keeping you close to her. Even when the two of you are doing something like sitting on the couch.

❤ She's confused on why you won't say anything about it to the people causing it. Instead of trying to console you, she's going to motivate you to stick up to them and tell them to stop giving you overtime. If you're extra uncomfortable with the idea then she'll go and do it herself. She's the Miu Iruma - whatever your job is, she will not hesitate to use her fame and power to make them take care of their employees!

❤ She cares a lot and she would do anything to stop you from feeling so overworked. She doesn't want you to continue being upset, your irritation is palpable and it affects her. But she's not going to be all sensitive and console you. She will take care of you in her own way - and she hopes you understand that that is how she shows her appreciation for you.

It helps you relax throughout the day if you use it before you sleep. Honestly, the invention is perfect, and it does help prevent the feeling of being overworked.

I want to throw my hat in the ring of this whole reddit thread thing because I've been keeping my eye on the posts from the past few days. (I don't have reddit, I prefer to stay away from that site.)

I'm so,, baffled over this unpopular opinion thread and how people are using it to criticize the hermits, as if they have any justification to do so. Of course it's okay to give them constructive criticism but the content I've seen isn't even that type of criticism, most of it should be flagged as straight up hate comments.

The ones about Grian being a bully or the ones that claim some hermits dislike the others are so, so unnecessary. These are the ones who need to realize that this is just the other side of the coin of what is essentially a parasocial relationship. They don't know the hermits or what they think, it's just plain odd. It's just seems like they are just shoving their own feelings and opinions into the hermits.

My logic is if a thread is causing more harm then good, then it should be taken down- (scar even agrees to a certain extent guys like c'mon). If people truly believe it would be taken down because hermits "can't handle criticism" then that's on them. It was all unwarranted.

I agree so much, especially with you middle paragraph about people not knowing the hermits. That's something I noticed but didn't mention in my post before, but the comment that kicked off the chain of Grian-bashing specifically said that they got the impression that many of the hermits didn't like Grian.

Firstly, i have no idea where they got that since I've only heard people say nice things about working with him. Secondly, whether they realized Grian might read the thread or not, I think it's extremely insidious to try and plant the idea in someone's head that their friends secretly hate them. I know he has anxiety. I also know from personal experience that most people on earth probably "oh my god what if everyone secretly hates me" like once a month a minimum. You should, full stop, just not say those things since they can be very damaging. It was just so so speculative and out of line, in my opinion. They're just making up interpretations that don't exist. The mod's justification is that these comments were providing explanations for their thoughts and brought a new perspective. They also said that the comments were in the realm of "welcoming and friendly."

.....um, yeah, I don't think that saying a hermit is a controlling narcissist who abuses his power over people, a bully, and that some of his friends secretly dislike him is "welcoming and friendly." Or constructive. Or going to help in any way whatsoever. We know that at least Scar disliked the thread and said it wasn't helpful, and I suspect Xisuma is the one who originally wrote the comment about how hurtful it was even if he later conceded to unlocking the thread.

There's a way to deliver criticism in a way that's constructive, and this wasn't it. The mod does also write this comment, though: "We are all guests in the Hermits' home here. This is a subdivision of private enterprise and free speech is not a given. If you want fair discussion, do so in an unmoderated environment where you're not harming the people whose work you claim to enjoy."

and, I agree. If you want to post unfiltered criticism, you should do so in an unmodded environment where the hermits don't have to see it. Xisuma and Joe are the head mods of the subreddit. The way reddit works, someone could literally create their own hermitcraft subreddit and mod it any way they like if they don't enjoy the rules of the current one (see: the creation of r/dreamwastaken2 after some people wanted better discussion of discourse than on the original sub)

Being alone is what you've had to deal with since the orphanage shut down, your care taker rain into debt, and no one was going to consider taking in a child that was "too old". One by one the children were either getting jobs, leaving the city to join the bandits, or were just... gone. Soon, you had to leave the city because you weren't contributing to the cycle of economics.

In the beginning, living outside the city sucked: being constantly shot by bandits especially since you were part of a bandit gang, having to live in constant war for territory; nearly suffocating, either cause you lost track of time or you bandit brothers and sisters wanted to prank you; or constantly being nearly eaten by the Elpis' many creatures. Though, one bandit treated you different, teaching you everything she knew about Oz kits and how to make them last, how to add mods to them, or how to make them simply explode. She was a great teacher... until she died while joyriding off a cliff in a moon buggy (the way she wanted). After the incident you left the bandit gang and walk, stole a buggy til it ran out of gas, and found a garage in a not so quiet area.

You turned it into your own shop using your knowledge of Oz kits, and despite selling the kits, earning what little credits you could, life outside the city still fucking sucked. And, hey, maybe it got worse once a few bandits started becoming aware that maybe your kits were maybe rigged to fail over a period of time so that maybe the bandits would come back and maybe you could earn a few extra alleged credits.

"You little shit..." one of the six bandits growl at you while the rest thought to trash your garage. You thought you could just con me out of my fucking money?!" he grabs you up by the collar, god you hope he doesn't punch you again.

"You signed a warranty." You recall the paper with a handwritten sentence that stated "No refunds" with just a line underneath it for signature. "I can't read, asshole." He replies. You pause, haven't thought of that before.

"Well... I don't understand how that's my fau-" earning you another punch in the face and you thrown to the floor. While lying there, thinking over all that had happened the last few months to avoid this very moment. You tilt your head up to the sound of a gun cocking and see that it's aimed at you. The sight makes you start to silently cry, making it hard for you to breathe, you didn't want to die. Seconds before he's able to pull the trigger, he turns around to the gunshots and his crew yelling at someone. You use this opportunity to run, earning bullets in your direction and as you take cover behind a toppled over desk, and peaking over you see a brown woman in a cowboy hat. It was like everything was in slow motion as you watched her take out the gang so... easily. The show was interrupted as a bandit falls in front of you, eyes rolled and tongue out of their mouth.

You gag at the sight, you want to throw up but you feel like you've run out of fluids due to the earlier punches to your stomach.

Within seconds, everything was quiet until you hear footsteps in your direction and the desk is kicked and you no longer have your cover, finally getting a clear look at the woman, immediately blurting the words: "Are you emo?" earning you a scowl. "The one eye covered is kind out of style don't you think?"

"Hey, at least mine is clean, kid." she responds, you hint that she's amused. "And that's not how you respond to someone that just saved you."

"It's the trauma and shock talking, besides I had everything handle."

"Did you?" she refers to the tear streaks, bruises, and the destroyed garage.

"Downsides of being an entrepreneur."

"Sad to see the job officially over."

"Huh?" You question as you move amongst the garage to pick up some valuables, sad when you see the only baby picture of you crumbled.

"Putting it blunt, I'm being paid to keep your little ass from continuing your independent business."

"Says who?!"

"Says the credits sent to my account, you're lucky I don't kill you like ordered and if I don't someone else..." she nods to the dead. "will." She looks around, opening lockers for anything that will aid her in her journey, she was leaving. She was right, you knew more bandits would come and if not bandits, assassins like her who would kill you for their capitalist employer. You dropped the no longer valuables and grabbed your bug out backpack, you're going with the cowgirl.

The cowgirl steps out of the garage, her Oz kit activating and you followed, your Oz kit activating as well. "What are you doing?" she questions after taking no more than a couple steps.

"What are you doing?" you question back.

"Walking." she answers, continuing her journey, taking a few glances over her shoulder seeing as you continued to follow her steps. She turns around to pick you up, retrace her steps and place you back at the garage before she continued only for you to continue following her. "No, no. I am not playing mother duck."

"Well, I can't stay at the garage."

"Then go to Concordia."

"I can't and won't."

"Well, you can't follow me!"

"I don't want to be alone." She replies by throwing her head back and letting out a loud groan.

"I might actually kill you..." she mutters. "You can't follow me, I do bad people stuff."

"Yeah..." you blink.

"I kill and have killed hundreds of people and creatures, gone to many dangerous lands, and have agreed to illegal deals for a lucrative amounts of credits, you will not follow me." You give her a silence and a slow blink, you began dissociating at the word 'have' and she realized you weren't listening and sighs. "The moment we get somewhere safe and quiet, you are to stay there and not follow me.

And you followed, even after finding the seemingly unquiet and high temperature place she wanted to dump you at, you continued to follow her, learning her name was Nisha and she was a vault hunter.

At one point she got sick of it and threatened her way into getting you a "free" stay in Concordia of the now dead Mayor and Sheriff's luxury apartment. You stay there happily and took every moment to be at her side whenever she visited the small city, asking her about her journey, her guns, her hat, her make up, her friends, etc. It bugged her, she even yelled at you due to her annoyance. She yelled, calling you a bother and wished you'd stop pestering her. It took one of her colleague to get her to stop.

The incident made you embarrassed, it hurt you, making you leave the city, getting barley lost, distracting you by throwing rocks at small alien pests. Despite your efforts to get closer to her, you were still alone. You sit in the moon's dirt and hug your knees, drawing in the dirt slowly, ignoring the fast falling stars and quickly darkened sky only for you to be picked up by your collar and look eye to eye to Nisha. "Where have you been? You know it's dangerous to leave the city?!" Only responding to her was a pouty face and eyes that looked away from her, she let you go and sighs, a hand on her hip.

Nisha knew why and unknowingly to you, it upset her that she automatically compared herself to a deceased relative. A moment passed before a quick "Sorry" left her and she grabs your hands to guide you back to the city. "Don't leave again, it's too dangerous and you can get hurt and..." she stops her rambling. "Just don't, not without me and not without protect." She takes you to Moxxi's bar and you both sit at the bar in silence for a moment before she orders two shots of sambuca, you smelt the scent even before Nisha handed one to you.

"I'm going to say this once, look at me," she begins, making sure you have her strict attention. "You will not leave this city without me until you are old enough and well and ready to protect yourself. I will train you and you are not to question me, I'm teaching you to survive, understand?" You give a hesitant nod as an answer. "I want to hear you."

"Yes... I understand."

"Good, now drink fast." she downs the shot before setting the glass on the bar, she waits for you.

"It smells bad." she grins, waiting for you. You down the shot as quickly as possible, making a face and sticking out your tongue in disgust, earning a chuckle from Nisha. She places a hand on your head giving a proud "good." It isn't even a minute later before you run outside the bar and throw up in the nearest corner.

"It was one shot...to be fair it was sambuca." she guides your dizzy figure to your home and gets you in bed.

"I don't want to drink sambuca again."

"That's fair, it was only an agreement."

"I don't have to call you mom do I?"

"Please don't."

"Now I have to call you mom, mom."

"Stop." she sings before turning out your lamp light.

"With auntie Athena and and uncle Wilhelm."

"And cousin claptrap.."

"...Nevermind." you fall asleep.

i respectfully disagree.

watching a long play of a game instead of playing it does not detract from the experience of the piece. it changes the consumption of course but it does not remove the impact. there are oftentimes hundreds of different play styles on youtube for the same game.

games are expensive and don’t work across all available platforms for the player, or their computer can’t handle an emulator, etc. i own a mac and a lot of games sure don’t like it, and i don’t like playing “on pc” as it is. i have a smart tv and no mod cables to play my ps2 on it, and the ps3 can hook up fine ofc but gaming is something i want to do for fun. and sometimes it’s not fun.

sometimes horror gaming is too much. sometimes i get too stressed or fed up with a section and enjoyment dies and sure, qq moar l2play. but that’s just how it works for me these days. after trying to play many games and getting fed up with mechanics and it detracting my enjoyment or desire to even finish a game i wanted to see through, long plays are what helped me get interested in a game and pursue its fandom or lore or whatever.

the beauty of a long play is that it allows me to stop and pick up when i want to and it makes the trip into the game smoother. i go at my own pace. there are hundreds of videos with play styles and chosen avenues. you can get no commentary or someone in a box in the corner. you can get 12 hour long play deep lore dive streams. the whole experience is incredible.

diving into a horror game can straight up be too much for someone (me). i did sh2 and barely finished 3, and shit even if i could get past the cafe (because i canNOT figure out how to shoot the fucking gun) in sh1, i think i’d never make it much further. i can’t. handle it. i love horror. i have seen many horror movies and they are not the same, i cannot pin a movie that has an effect like a long play.

i will also note rq (as an edit) that yes: absolutely, impacts can and probably have been lessened, such as plot reveals or how much i would have felt dazzled or excited to stumble upon something, because the player already knows where the thing is and is intentionally showing it to me. it's true! longplays CAN and sometimes DO remove the magic. it's very different watching Journey, and being able to go into Journey and chill and marvel at the scenery. i can't stop someone doing a longplay so i can fuck around trying to study an environment, or play hide and seek with enemies, or put on a certain outfit. 100%, longplays CAN and DO remove some of the magic of playing a game and that's just fact, and unfortunate fate.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ you win some you lose some. the way i look at is that it's not quite a fair trade, but at least i'm not getting fed up with a game and quitting it altogether, or having it leave a sour taste in my mouth, and i'm getting to see it through as it is. and while some impacts are lessened, it doesn't mean that all of them are. i have marveled and been wowed and taken aback just as i figure i may have playing the game, who knows; but seeing someone else do it does not always change how i interpreted or felt.

sure. it can be seen as acting the same as a movie. there’s a vid out there that literally calls itself “The Last of Us Movie” that’s 6 hours long (or 8?? been awhile) and it’s all the cutscenes all the dialogue all the flavor dialogue all the item collection and achieves, all story mode essentially and it’s immersive as fuck. it’s a game i started myself, but couldn’t stand to finish because shooting the guns was hard as hell for me and it just. got too stressful. without a long play i wouldn’t have finished it. and sometimes people just don’t have the ability to devote the game time for whatever reason in their life, and so watching a long play can be a suitable replacement.

long plays let me dip my toes into a game without buying it and thus supporting sometimes shitty creators (Bendy and the Ink Machine, Poppy Playtime, FNAF, etc) or a game on a platform i never intend to buy. i’m not gonna let that stop me from enjoying a game. i’m still getting a hell of an experience. it’s not the same experience obviously. but to me consuming a long play does not have the same feeling as a movie.

movies have one way to go. long plays take different avenues depending on the player (one just does the main story with no side quests, someone else does all that and the achieves, one shows easter eggs during the play, one does a “role playing” play through - it’s almost endless!!). the engagement is so far different. it’s still experiencing a game and it’s still understanding and deep diving into it. it’s not a movie. i don’t want to watch a movie, and i don’t view these on the same level as a movie.

while i think that’s an elitist and disappointing viewpoint to disregard long plays, i understand your reasoning and i understand how different it is to actually play a game. it’s pretty different. i respect your opinion.

i do not think it’s fair to disregard or shame others for watching long plays instead of playing and i wont ever feel shame for it myself. experiences vary and interpretations vary and enjoyment and personal caps vary, but being able to connect to, and with other people because of the game is what i think is the whole point of consuming a game, in the end.

not to be that guy but i do actually gatekeep video games from people who just watch longplays on youtube. you are misunderstanding the point of the medium. what you want is a movie
