have you considered switching to substack? i know you have quite the archive on medium so it wouldn’t be easy to move. i’m not a writer person, just a reader so idk what the pros n cons are. no pressure just thought it was interesting. you’re the only person i follow and actually make an effort to read on medium. feels like substack is the new place for the Cool Kids haha but idk if there’s any actual difference or what’s up. also absolutely not saying you’re not cool! you def are not that you need a rando anons validation lmao. just making like an observation about the platforms
Substack pays six-figure advances to terfs like jesse singal and the only way to make money from it is to paywall pieces, thereby ensuring far less people can read them.
Medium has decent anti transphobe moderation and i get paid for every single read i get. at the same time, anyone can read anything without paying a fee. its also discoverable to a general audience just randomly browsing the site. substack followings dont grow organically. mediums do. fuck substack.

pairing(s): leon kennedy x gn! reader synopsis: leon tries bubble tea for the first time, much to his reluctance (he likes it!) content: fluff, established relationship, rebecca chambers & chris redfield mentioned. « 1.4 k words┇masterlist┇ao3┇reblogs appreciated! »
Tumblr media
“How far is this place?” Leon lets out a heavy grunt, sight unbearable as the sharp sunrays glaring onto the scorching asphalt. Heat so nauseating it permeates through his clothing to form sweat at areas less desirable.
Leon would rather cuddle next to you at home right now, under the lulling breeze of the air conditioning. But you insisted– no matter the heat nor the distance, you must have your hands on this drink in this thickened fog of heat. It’s perplexing how you find space in your belly after such a hearty lunch today.
You loop both arms around his open elbow – propping up just for you to hold – as you flush your front onto his sides. Partial bribery, partial gratitude for joining you on this conquest despite the harsh weather conditions.
Leon lands his gaze on you – your lashes flutter, body fidget closer. There is no way he can deny you now. That you know and took full advantage of every single time. He groans in defeat, tilting his torso back as if to heave the weight of his well-satiated belly.
“What is this bubble tea? And why do you like it so much?” You call it a bubble tea, but he calls this concoction a monstrosity. Leon will never understand how one can make a drink already perfect imperfect?
“Oh, Leon. I’m about to show you a whole new world.” You spin your heels, skipping a little in the firm grip of his arms.
“I’m surprised you still have an appetite.” Leon’s tone sounds faintly like a jab.
“There’s always room for bubble tea.” He suspects you say this motto often with the way the words uttered so instantly.
Leon grumbles Rebecca’s name underneath his breath. Since you discovered it from Rebecca’s introduction, this supposed ‘habit’ soon evolved closer to an obsession. Replacing your usual coffee order with a tall plastic cup of milk tea. With how Rebecca sweetens her coffee, whatever she recommends can’t be good for you.
“I don’t think I want bubbles in my tea.” Leon tightens his lips.
“It’s not real bubbles, Lee.” You chuckle as you run your hands along his arms. “You’ll love it, trust me!”
Hand in hand with yours, Leon follows your footsteps into a slender laneway, shying away from rows of corporate office on the main street. Red lanterns hang high, adorn by banners of words you can’t read. You find familiar merchants chant a series of today’s sales across the street, hubbub of both young and old, nesting the air in this hidden away part of town. Even during a weekday, Chinatown is busy – endearingly so.
You approach a humble corner shop you often frequent. Walking up the front of the counter with one confident stride, only taking a step back at the realisation of your confused boyfriend.
Nudging at Leon’s elbow, you point at the signage that displays their extensive list of flavours, options and customisations. “Get the winter melon milk tea with extra boba.”
“Get your own.” He scoffs at your audacity.
“I want mango. But I also wanna try the winter melon tea.” You cling onto his arm, flushing your body onto his. Puffed cheeks, downturned eyebrows – you know he can’t say no. Leon can’t ever say no to you when you do that face.
“So I’m your experiment.” He sighs underneath his breath, but his countenance softens when he sees your toothy smile as the line moves forward. “What does winter melon taste like, anyway?”
“I dunno. That’s why you’re trying it for me.”
Before he can protest, it’s your turn to order. You face the register, shuffling out your membership card from your bag to beep it in front of the scanner.
“What would you two like to have?”
“One winter melon boba milk tea and one mango green tea...” Leon glances over the size options. “Medium, please.”
“Mini boba or standard boba?” The cashier fiddles with the system before them.
Leon pauses, contemplating out loud. “What does that mean?”
“What size boba do you want?” They repeat once more, gesturing to the list of toppings which puzzles him even more.
“Standard, thanks. Whatever it means.” A prompt nod, buttons are pressed. “Ice and sugar levels?”
“Standard everything.” Leon tries to sound calm, but the words escaped with a snapping edge.
Leon makes his payment, frustrated by the entire experience, but it all the more teases a giggle out of you to see the usual composed Leon fluster over ordering a simple drink. The barista calls out your number. You two occupy an empty table, drinks in hand.
The drink sits before Leon, black beads declining to the bottom, tall cup sealed with a plastic film – Leon has seen you do this a few times. He should know what to do. Leon lines the straw on top of the film, with a small burst, puncture the film through the pointy end. The other hand grips the cup a tad too firm, the impact splashing the tea from the puncture all over his hand.
Your laughter bursts at the sight – chuckling so hard that Leon is asking for napkins from the front counter, hands still a dripping mess. He hates you for it – just a little though – for not warning him.
“That went well.” He grumbles, wiping off the droplets from his fingers with the white napkin.
“It’s okay – I've been there, done that.” You repeat his motions, thrusting your straw in your drink with practiced ease before taking a generous sip. You rummage your phone out of your pocket, pointing the lens directly at him.
“What?” Leon fiddles with the straw, swirling the substance under his fingertips.
“Go on.” You tilt your head in encouragement. “Take a sip.”
“I can’t drink if you’re recording me like this.” He broods on the words slightly.
“Drink!” You demand out of impatience, waving your hands more exaggeratedly.
Leon gazes inside the straw, the thick pipe designed for easier travel of any toppings within. He is hesitant, especially with you watching intently at his every movement and reaction. He hopes you never send this video to Chris; Leon will never recover from the embarrassment if so.
“Here goes nothing.” With a deep breath, Leon sucks the liquid from the straw.
The liquid makes contact first: a blend of tea and sugary syrups complementing each other; the dew of wintermelon arousing a soft sweetness that is easy to consume and just as addictive. Flavourful, but not overwhelming so. Suddenly, something round and slimy enters his mouth through the pipe.
Leon winces, taken aback. Bites on it to find it chewy. Then swallows. Doesn’t taste like anything in particular.
“What are these made of?”
“Those are tapioca, it’s nice and chewy isn’t it?”
Leon nods, taking another sip, savouring the taste of all the flavours combined. With how invested he is sipping his drink, you can’t help but smile as the levels goes down steadily. He notices you staring.
“Do you… want to try?” He takes the straw out of his mouth, passing it over to you.
You light up, moving in so quickly it almost shove him aside. Sorry Leon, you should have known that your love for bubble tea is above your love for him.
“Is this what wintermelon tastes like? I love it!” You take a sip. Leon tries your drink, nodding in approval before moving your cup back to you. But you don’t, instead, with an almost guilty tone, said: “Do you wanna... swap?”
“Nice try – but no. You made your choice, stick with it.” Leon scoffs, removing his drink off your hands, which leads you to pout miserably.
After Leon's signal, you two leave the shop. Leon takes you to all the shops you want to visit – and you find your gaze trailing to his drink that is going down much faster than yours.
“So… what do you think about the tea?” You ask, hoping to get any kind of admittance on how this drink isn’t so bad after all.
“It’s okay… I don’t mind it.” Leon keeps his praise short, feigning playful stubbornness.
You see through him immediately, lighting up, before stealing another sip from his. “Back here again tomorrow?”
Leon’s lips upturned into a smile, but he lets you take another sip – which he will regret later, with how fast you’re consuming. His hand places gently on your head. Shaking his head in disbelief, fully aware that he is powerless against you – and you are likely to make a return trip together. Anything to make you happy.
“Get your self together, sugar addict.”

First time ever writing something like this on Tumblr, so it’s most likely hella messy because this is just a very IMPROMPTU BRAINSTORM :( I also got the German translations for stuff from a friend who lives in Germany :) ((he says, and I quote, if you need anything in German I’ll be your guy))
Anyways,
Imagine ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ Loser!Konig, Yknow, the kinda guy that’s like ‘I listen to rock hurrhurr no one understands me hurrhurr’ the ‘NEVER interacts with anyone (other than his best friend Hong Jin) ESPECIALLY women’ trope.
Like imagine König with a wardrobe FULL of band shirts, and ripped tank tops, and he’s obviously got a bass guitar, his dorm room is filled with band posters and he has medium length hair, and he like, never ever interacts with women cause ‘he’s not like that’ ((sure bud, sure)) and he only ever listens to rock and metal to ‘drown the voices out’ ((definitely not cause he’s edgy or anything 🙄🙄🙄))
Sees you, who has the smile of an angel, and at first tells himself he’s DEFINITELY not enamoured by you, your laugh, giggles, the way you speak, the way you just… are.
“Agh, nein, I’ve just been lonely, these are just delusions, why the hell would she be into me anyway,” shakes it off and goes back to his dorm and goes to sleep thinking about you (because well, he was… trying NOT to think about you).
Sees you repeatedly on campus, like as if you’re TAUNTING him with your presence, and he then begins actively avoiding the places you frequent, like the library, the canteen, even starts sitting on the COMPLETE opposite end of the classes you share with him, to the point where even you notice it.
Now you.
You, who have been hypnotised by this behemoth of a man wandering around campus, in his band shirts (and your personal favourite, his tank tops, cause, you know, his big meaty arms…), and think to yourself that someone as cool and attractive as he is would NEVER be into you anyway.
The way he always chuckles deeply at what his friend says, this Hong Jin guy (who you think you kinda have a crush on too, ugh, why are there so many cute guys on campus?), and the way he flips his hair out of the way when it gets into his face, sooooo majestically… (okay, so you might be slightly delusional, so what?)
One day you notice he starts… disappearing from the campus… like there’s a lack of presence from him. How? He’s like, the Hulk 2.0, HOW IS HE GONE??
So you start actively going out of your way to ‘bump’ into him. You go to places where you think he’d be on campus - to classes you KNOW he has, with the excuse that you’re there to say hi to a friend, or to the vending machines scattered throughout the compound, cause he loves his canned drinks, and even to the GYM, just lurking around long enough till the staff ask if you’d like a membership (to which you sheepishly decline, then scurry away).
Two whole weeks go by and you begin to think he doesn’t like you, and in fact, think he HATES you.
Then you see Hong Jin, by a vending machine, alone. You stare at him for a good minute, contemplating on whether to just approach him outright and ask him about König. You vigorously shake your head, hype yourself up, and approach him at an alarmingly quick pace, to which he notices, and is startled when you abruptly stop right in front of him, interrupting him as he chooses his drink.
“Jin, right? Nice to meet you, does König hate me?” You ask, almost rapping it like as if you had 1 second left to live, eyes wide and brows furrowed.
Jin simply looks at you, flabbergasted, so shocked because that was NOT what he expected to be asked today. Or by anyone. Or by YOU. The girl König had been talking about, the one he said he thought looked ‘kinda cute’, which, he never ever says, cause he’s way too busy raving about new albums or songs or his new PR at the gym.
He chuckles, which then turns into a laugh, as he looks at you through forming tears. You feel like a puppy with its tail tucked in between its legs, shy, scared that you pissed him off with your (unintentional) direct attitude.
“You’re funny, you know that?” Jin says, wiping away a tear, his laughs tapering off. “To answer your question, no, he doesn’t hate you,” he smiles, a glint in his eyes… a hint of deviousness, you decipher.
“Let me let you in on a little secret,” he leans in close, to your ear, and takes a quick glance to his left and right, “Reason he’s not been around is cause he reeeeeaaaaaaaalllllyyyyyyyyyy likes you,” he drags the word out, taunting you almost, and you jerk your head back and look at him dead in the eyes.
“Really?” You whisper, a smile creeping on your lips.
So this guy liked you this entire time? Who would’ve thought?!
“Yeah at one point he couldn’t shut up about you,” he grins, gaze shifting behind you, his voice now louder than before, “Oh, and don’t tell him I told you this, but he LoooooOooOOOOves thinking about you at night,” Jin leans backwards to an upright standing position, and smirks in the direction behind you.
You turn, and see Konig standing behind you, eyes blown wide, mouth slightly agape, frowning. You can’t tell if he’s shocked, mad, flustered, or all three.
“Oh, right, and I think you’re real cute too,” like pouring gasoline on an already ABSOLUTELY BLAZING DUMPSTER FIRE, you see König’s face shift to that of anger.
You can physically see him tense up and turn red, and the once stoic giant you (thought) you knew explodes, “HÄ?! DIGGA WAS MACHST DU?!” he practically screams.
You flinch, instinctually, from the giant getting mad, like he’ll actually charge straight through you to get to his best friend. König notices when he glances over to you, and loosens his body a little, as well as his expression, but still maintains a glare at Jin.
The Korean man taps you twice on your shoulder, dragging your attention back to him, and he winks at you, “good luck,” he clicks his tongue twice, and promptly RUNS away (rightfully so, or he would’ve been ripped apart by the angry Austrian), leaving you and König alone together.
You’re frozen in place. Don’t even turn around to look at your crush. Well, more like can’t.
His best friend just admitted to the fact that he likes you… like, REALLY likes you. Your mind races with so many thoughts, like, what did Jin mean by König thinking about you at night?? And why did he not shut up about you??? Is this real?? Is this a dream??
A loud sigh interrupts your train of thought, urging you to look behind you.
“Sorry,” König says so quietly it almost sounded like a whisper. He looked like a kicked puppy. Then, a moment of awkward silence. Your eyes dart EVERYWHERE but at him, you don’t even know if you can bring yourself to look at him, such a pitiful sight, but you do, and your heart aches. His eyes are glued to the ground.
It looks like he thinks you hate him, almost like as if he’s holding back tears and ready to beg for your forgiveness for being such a fucking creep, for being such a loser in love with someone like you, and you deserve someone soooo much more manly and cool and handsome and actually likes something other than dumb songs and dumb drinks and dumb gymming routines and…
“Hey, it’s alright,” you break the silence, approaching him slowly, “If it makes you feel any better I really like you too,” you smile softly, offering comfort. You look up to the poor man, into his eyes, and take his hand gently.
You wipe his shame away with those words, and there is a spark in his eyes, which you notice.
“Wirklich?”
“Yeah, wouldn’t believe how much I think about you too,” you blush, now you’re shy, because this is way too much for one small meeting. You’re pouring out intimate secrets to him, ABOUT HIM, while he very very very intently listens.
Again, there’s silence, and it’s a little awkward, considering now you both are in close proximity, being intimate, your neck craned upwards just to be able to maintain eye contact with this giant (HES a tree, you swear).
“So, uh,” König gulps, now taking your hands in his, “Wanna come have dinner with me?” He asks, slight blush dusting his cheeks, “At… my place?” He smiles.

Welcome to the internet café ˚✧₊˚ ᗢ₊˚✧ ゚
get comfy and get connected ᯤ
***
What is the internet café? The internet café was born from the memory, nostalgia, and aesthetic of internet cafes of the 2000s. The first Internet cafe was the Cafe Cyberia in London’s West End, which opened in 1994. The Internet cafe, with its dial-up connections and as one of the first public and communal means to access the digital world, is now a heart for lofi and vaporwave nostalgia and aesthetic, as we continue to navigate the digital world and our digital lives.
I’m a firm believer that we need communal liminal spaces. Two of my absolute favorites are gaiaonline (gaiaonline.com) - which includes Rally and other digital virtual worlds where moving and chatting is possible - and the Vaporwave Plaza (plaza.one), the space captured through their radio emission and communal discord space. The internet cafe is an extension of these two ideas, bringing together a discord and digital resource-sharing that we may find in a material Internet cafe.
How do I get connected? The discord server is the main space; it can be accessed at this link >>> https://discord.gg/7N2jdbza
Is it free? Yes! Everything posted in the discord is free, open-access.
However, I do sell exclusive materials (which helps fund my art, which I hope will become full-time). Exclusive resources (printables, downloads, and also tier membership to connect to 3G, 4G, 5G, and ETHERNET) can be found on my ko-fi here >>> https://ko-fi.com/delciax
About the artist (me!)
My name is Delcia, recent graduate living in CH. I am an anthropologist and writer with an ethnographic, research-based artistic practice. My current research works around colonial and capitalist ruin in Western Colorado with a specific focus on the processing of collective trauma via affect theory and archival disruption. My mediums of focus are photography, writing, film, graphic design, collage, and installation.
On the side, I love blogging, writing, reading, working on my tumblr, teaching (which pays the bills), moseying around on gaiaonline, traveling, having brunch in coffee shops, and taking care of my plants.
Topics of interest: engaged anthropology; archives and collective memory; trauma studies; environmental politics; decolonial theory; more-than-human epistemologies; queer and feminist theory.
Aesthetics of interest: lo-fi, mundane, 2000s, anime, glitch, grunge, pixel, vaporwave
Favorite authors: Michael Taussig; Donna Haraway; Jason Pine; Sophie Chao; Anna Tsing; Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi; Julio Cortázar; bell hooks

A Nice Method to make money using ChatGPT
Tumblr media
Are you interested in making money online using Chat GPT? If so, I've got an amazing method to share with you. Let me show you how to do it step by step.
First, head to a website called ANonChat GPT. It's a great tool that you can use for free, without any sign-ups or strings attached. You can use it to get a list of the best-selling books in any niche or genre. For example, you could ask for a list of the best-selling comedy books. Once you've found a book that catches your eye, use the tool to generate an engaging summary or blog post about it.
Read also: The Best ChatGPT Alternatives that would blow your mind
Next, take that summary or blog post and head to Medium.com. This is a fantastic website for writers and bloggers to share their ideas and stories. Sign up for a free account, and then post your summary or blog post about the book. Make sure to give it an engaging title, which you can get by using the Non-Chat GPT tool.
Now, how do you monetize your article? By joining the Amazon Associates program and promoting Audible.com, a website with a vast library of audiobooks. You can get an affiliate link for the audiobook version of the book you've summarized, and insert it into your Medium article. If someone clicks on that link and signs up for a free trial membership, you'll get $5. If they sign up for a paid membership, you'll get $10.
Read also: How to use Chatgpt in Print on Demand to make money online
To make your article even more engaging, use the Non-Chat GPT tool to generate three different calls to action that you can include after each paragraph. Try phrases like "Download the audiobook today and get ready to laugh out loud!"
You can also share your article on other websites, like LiveJournal.com, and include your Audible.com affiliate links. With this method, you can make money online simply by using Chat GPT and the Amazon Associates program. If you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments below. Thanks for watching, and see you in the next article!

However, navigating the monetization processes across multiple platforms can be complicated and time-consuming. That’s where services like Deliver My Tune come into play. This guide will explore how you can earn from YouTube and other video platforms with the help of Deliver My Tune, offering a comprehensive look at the steps, strategies, and benefits.
Understanding Video Monetization: Why It Matters
Video platforms such as YouTube, Vimeo, and others have grown exponentially in terms of user base and engagement. Creators are not only sharing their talents and ideas but also capitalizing on the potential to earn money from their videos. With the right content strategy, creators can leverage these platforms for multiple income streams, including ad revenue, sponsorships, and fan funding.
However, monetizing video content is not just about uploading videos and enabling ads. You need to adhere to certain rules, such as having a minimum number of subscribers and watch hours to join YouTube’s Partner Program. For artists and creators who want to distribute their content across various platforms, keeping track of revenue sources and managing rights can quickly become overwhelming.
That’s where Deliver My Tune steps in. It helps creators seamlessly distribute their video content, manage royalties, and ensure they are earning revenue from platforms like YouTube and more.

By using Deliver My Tune, creators can:
Distribute content effortlessly: Uploading videos to multiple platforms manually can be time-consuming. Deliver My Tune makes it easy to distribute your content to various video platforms, including YouTube, with just a few clicks.
Track revenue from multiple sources: YouTube’s monetization opportunities are plentiful, from ad revenue to premium memberships, but keeping track of your earnings from different sources can be difficult. Deliver My Tune centralizes this, providing a single dashboard where you can monitor your earnings from various platforms.
Automate royalty management: Artists and creators often face challenges in ensuring they receive the correct royalties. Deliver My Tune takes care of the complex processes of royalty management, ensuring that you get paid on time.
YouTube and Beyond: Exploring Other Platforms
While YouTube remains the dominant player in the world of video content, other platforms offer valuable opportunities for monetization. Vimeo, Dailymotion, and emerging platforms like Twitch and TikTok also provide creators with various income streams. Each platform has its unique way of rewarding creators, whether through ads, fan subscriptions, or direct tips.
Deliver My Tune ensures that you can easily distribute your content across all these platforms without needing to manage each one separately. This allows you to focus on creating content while they handle the distribution and monetization aspects. With Deliver My Tune, your videos can reach wider audiences on multiple platforms, increasing your chances of earning more.
How to Monetize on YouTube with Deliver My Tune
Monetizing on YouTube can seem straightforward, but several requirements must be met. These include having 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 public watch hours over the past 12 months to be eligible for YouTube’s Partner Program. Once you meet these criteria, YouTube offers various monetization methods:
Ad revenue: Display, overlay, and skippable video ads that run on your videos.
Channel memberships: Viewers pay a monthly fee for perks like exclusive badges, emojis, and content.
Super Chat and Super Stickers: Viewers pay to highlight their messages during live streams.
Merchandise shelf: You can promote and sell official merchandise directly from your YouTube channel.
Deliver My Tune facilitates this by making the process seamless. As a creator, you only need to focus on producing engaging content, while Deliver My Tune handles the distribution and revenue tracking aspects for you.
Why Use Deliver My Tune for YouTube Monetization?
One of the major advantages of using Deliver My Tune is that it simplifies the monetization process for content creators. Managing videos, royalties, and payments across multiple platforms can be a full-time job, especially for artists who need to focus on their craft. Deliver My Tune automates much of this, ensuring you don’t miss any revenue opportunities.
Here are some reasons why creators prefer using Deliver My Tune:
Comprehensive distribution: You no longer need to upload content to each platform individually. Deliver My Tune distributes your videos to YouTube and other platforms efficiently.
Royalty management: The platform helps you manage your royalties, ensuring timely payments for every video played.
Multiple revenue streams: By supporting multiple platforms, Deliver My Tune helps you diversify your income sources beyond just YouTube, maximizing your earnings.
Expanding Your Revenue Beyond YouTube
While YouTube is an excellent platform for monetizing video content, it’s essential to diversify your income streams. Platforms like Vimeo, Facebook Watch, and Twitch offer additional ways to earn revenue. Many of these platforms are still emerging and therefore present significant opportunities for early adopters.
For instance, Twitch, though traditionally associated with gaming, is growing in popularity among musicians and creators. Platforms like Dailymotion are also gaining traction in specific regions. Deliver My Tune helps you tap into these diverse platforms, ensuring you maximize your potential revenue streams.
Conclusion
Monetizing video content on YouTube and other platforms is more accessible than ever, but managing the process across various services can be challenging. Deliver My Tune simplifies this by offering a comprehensive solution that helps you distribute, track, and manage your content effectively. Whether you’re an independent musician, a YouTube creator, or a vlogger, Deliver My Tune can help you earn revenue seamlessly from your video content.

Giraffe's Eye View: Christmas Specials Special (2023) | Sakura's Wonderful Christmas
Chestnuts are roasting on an open fire. Jack Frost is nipping at your nose. Mom and dad can hardly wait for school to start again. All the dogs in the neighborhood somehow learned to bark Jingle Bells in sync. Yet retail workers are still more annoyed with Mariah Carey. Snow is getting shoveled, tossed, and formed into sentient beings leading parades without permits. It makes for an excellent distraction as the Krampus abducts children for bad behavior. Fruitcake is exchanged only to find its permanent home in the garbage. Terrorists have hijacked the Holiday office party right before your boss can give you a Jelly of the Month Club membership as your bonus. And of course, the Turducken has returned to wreak its fiery vengeance upon an unsuspecting world! If all this doesn’t put you in the Christmas spirit, perhaps these following Holiday specials will!
Greetings people of today and robots of tomorrow! It is I, Santa Clark, your geeky giraffe friend with a deep love of Christmas! My obsession for the yuletide is rivaled only by Maleficent’s hatred for it, which is saying a lot considering she once teamed up with Mad Madam Mim to kidnap the literal Spirit of Christmas. Yes, that really happened. I know this due to my annual pilgrimage to the Island of Misfit Specials, home to obscure or nerdy festive media ranging from movies, TV episodes, and comics. It’s no easy journey. Constantly I find myself confronted by sinister snowmen, genocidal gingerbread men, and worst of all, crappy commercials. Getting stabbed in the foot by a candy-cane wielding cookie is one thing, but I swear I’ve seen that ad for Wilbur’s White Elephant Gift Emporium more times than I’ve seen Miracle on 34th Street! Sometimes at night I catch myself reciting that jingle. Wilbur’s White Elephant Gift Emporium: Where Christmas meets Convenience! Huh, maybe Maleficent had a point.
Nah, my deep-rooted appreciation for this time of year can weather even the most moronic marketing! It helps that most of the merry media I’ve seen have put me in the perfect Holiday mood! Examples include the time a Ninja Turtle found himself trapped in a truck full of stollen toys, a drunk department store Santa stumbling onto a wish-granting magic bag, Big Bird nearly becoming a popsicle, Gwenpool waking up in a world where Galactus took the place of jolly ol’ Saint Nicholas, a terrifying tree stump trying to slaughter some saps over a stupid ship war, and the year when Death gave the Little Match Girl the greatest gift of all. Needless to say, I thought I had seen it all. That is, until I took my friends on a trip to the Island, tasking them to find me new, strange, seasonal specials to review! Some of them were fair, finding me festive favorites as comforting as coco in front of the fireplace. Others were fiendish, wanting to feed off my misery like Gremlins after midnight. Regardless of how naughty or nice my companions were, I’ve compiled all of their suggestions into a makeshift advent calendar! So stay tuned everyday until Christmas to see how badly my buddies can shred what little sanity I have left.
On the eighth day of Christmas, my buddies gave to me...
Tumblr media
Y’know what’s annoying? Asides from a-holes who shop on Thanksgiving? Not being an otaku. I’ve made my general disinterest in anime no secret, blaming it on a lack of Yu-Gi-Oh or Pokemon when I was younger. Closest I got was Avatar: The Last Airbender, an amazing adventure series that gate-keeping weebs will insist doesn’t count. First of all, yes it does. Second, none of this comes from a place of disrespect. If anything, I appreciate how Japan treats the medium as a true artform instead of relegating animation to the kid’s table like here in the States. Regardless of my feelings on the subject, there’s no escaping the relentless swam I call my friends. Previously I’ve proclaimed how persistent my pals were in pestering me to pursue My Little Pony, but that’s nothing compared to how bothersome my buddies become when begging me to view Cowboy Bebop or My Hero Academia. Not even Christmas offers any relief since Dani (Alice2Rose) has presented me with the thirty-fifth episode of the Cardcaptor Sakura series, Sakura’s Wonderful Christmas. Brilliant, what better way to get me invested in something new than plopping me in halfway through the plot? That’d be like handing me a novel with the first three chapters ripped out! Still, I could say the same for Miraculous Ladybug and I managed to follow what was going on fairly easily. Perhaps I’m being too pessimistic.
Or not. My confusion starts immediately after the admittedly catchy theme tune as we’re dropped into the dream of our titular magical schoolgirl, Sakura. Her English dub is done by Carl McKillip while Sakura Tenge provides the original Japanese vocals. Much to the annoyance of anime purists everywhere, I prefer the dub. If I wanted to read what the characters were saying, I’d buy the manga! Tough perhaps I should, since Sakura and I are equally confused as a bunch of cards rain from the sky, a mysterious feminine figure watching on from Tokyo Tower. What are these cards? Who is this woman? Does our hero have these dreams often? Do you hear what I hear? Thanks to the power of the Internet, I at least have an answer for the first question. These are Clow Cards, magical macguffins capable of storing magical monsters. Collect them all, of course! You can find them at Hot Topic right next to the Rarity body pillows! As for the woman, they heavily imply it being Sakura’s teacher Miss Mizuki. Who is Mizuki? Why is she so important? Do you recall the most famous reindeer of all?
No time for that, we have real issues at hand! Like what Sakura is gonna get her friends for Christmas! Who are her friends? Are any of them relative to the plot? What’s with the crazy chick’s meltdown when Sakura approaches to ask a simple question? What do you get a wookie for Christmas when he already owns a comb?
Perhaps some tickets to a winter carnival, since suddenly we cut away to one. Okay, how come these things keep popping up in media? Is this an actual thing I never noticed before? Who wants to visit a fair in freezing temperatures aside from me? Everytime I see one I expect Captain Marvel to show up to beat down the Seven Deadly Sins. At least then I’d have a familiar face to follow, instead we’re stuck with Sakura and company. Again; who are these people? Who’s the sentient skyscraper with gray hair hanging with them? Wait, are he and Sakura on a date? She’s ten, isn’t she a little young to be romantically involved? How old is her boyfriend? Who spiked the eggnog? And why does it take everybody so long to notice the park is on freak’n fire!?
Leaping into action, our young heroine and some bratty boy I’m assuming to be her sidekick activate their Shadow Card Jutsu against the Fire Sprite responsible for fanning the flames. Why did it decide to set stuff on fire? Is it Charizard’s cousin and this was its way of making things merry and bright? Home come the love child of Pikachu and Simba is instructing our heroes how to stop it? Is he incapable of actually assisting them? What was the point of the protagonists putting the park goers to sleep instead of evacuating them to safety? Why is Miss Mizuki watching from a distance? People are in danger, what’s stopping her from helping? Why is she stalking her students? Does she know about Sakura’s after school activities? Who's playing first? Mary, did you know? I don’t know or care. By this point I was so lost I was actually getting angry! Whatever, Sakura manages to capture the creature, gives a gift to her boyfriend, the park takes medication for the burning, Simbachu manifests a magical light show, and I’m left looking for some Tylenol.
All respect to followers of this franchise like Dani, but this was terrible. Dragon Ball at least offers audiences a ‘Previously On’ segment before the story starts proper. I wasn’t expecting to have to do homework in order to watch this! It made me feel stupid and Care Bears didn’t even manage to do that. Granted this is far better animated and acted, but why should I care when the writing is what’s bogging it down? So yeah, sad to say Cardcaptor Sakura is not my cup of sencha. Action anime still has no appeal to me.

Thanks to my buddy AN-D for making this GIF for me. ^^
Besides, I prefer slice of life. Yeah, in an astonishing turn of events, a certain robotroll finally cracked the code by getting me hooked on plotlines pertaining to high school romance and found families. Shows such as Spy X Family,  Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro, Dress Up Darling, and especially Komi Can’t Communicate. Komi’s capers were so compelling that I even bought all volumes of the manga. An autistic guy like me could easily relate to the plight of Shōko Komi (Amber Lee Connors), a student suffering from an extreme social disorder that renders her practically mute. Despite this, her goal is to make 100 friends, a task one would assume to be easy considering her classmates treat her like a goddess, though really that has more to do with her looks rather than her personality. Not to mention the added attention only makes her more nervous. Only the typical wallflower Hitohito Tadano (Kyle McCarley) manages to bypass her bashfulness, becoming her first friend via an earnest conversation on the chalkboard. Together the two form a terrific friendship, eventually blossoming into a beautiful romance. Signs of this inevitable development are evident even in earlier entries like It’s Just a Merry Christmas.
Y’know what’s annoying? Aside from trying to remember the names of all of Komi’s companions? Sharing a birthday with Jesus. Coincidentally, Komi does! Thus Tadano and their gender-neutral agent of chaos Najimi (Skyler Davenport) are prompted to plan a party at her place later that day, Christmas Eve. Like Rainbow Dash they rush to the mall alongside Komi’s other amigos, Najimi challenging all present to find something exceptional for their silent friend that’s ¥5000 / $35.30. All fail save for Tadano, spotting a humongous cat plushy priced at ¥8000 / $56.48 that they all split the bill on. Still, shopping for a loved one is easy when you’re able to ask them what they like. Komi isn’t as fortunate, scrambling to the store to find something with her little brother in tow. She needed backup in case she ran into a psychotic postman or the Terminator. Otherwise he offers little assistance other than pointing out a scarf she gets for Tadano. Sadly we never see him receive it, but he does wear it in future chapters and in promotional material, so I’m assuming he appreciated it.
We do see Komi receiving her cat once the crowd converges at her home. Her peers perceive Shōko’s silence as a sign they screwed up, but Tadano understands she’s embarrassed by the affection. He suggests she send a thankful text later, not even mentioning how the feline was his idea. How honorable an hombre. Meanwhile, everyone else greedily battles for their Senpai Supreme’s attention, including Himiko Agari the Big Green Dog (Sarah Williams), Omoharu Nakanaka the Chosen One (Cherami Leigh), and Ren Yamai (Cristina Vee).
Yamai, more than anyone, deserves a permanent place on Santa’s Naughty List. My buddies and I have dubbed her Stalker McGee due to her perving out over Komi whenever on screen. She is a Yandere, and an odious one at that. In an earlier installment she actually kidnapped Hitohito with the clear intent on murdering him so she can take his place. You can’t even argue she was joking since the boy spends a majority of the story tied up in a closet before Ren returns with a knife. Granted it was changed to drumsticks for the show, though I could imagine Ren still using them for stabbing. Later on the class takes a trip to Osaka where all the girls share a bath house and Yamai salivates at the notion of touching her goddess’s bare breasts. No joke, it actually made me feel physically uncomfortable. I was squirming so much my spots kept popping off! She at least asks for consent, the timid teen having the common sense to refuse the request. Komi knows Yamai is crazy, but accepts it cuz of friendship. Screw you, Tomohito Oda, that’s not how that works! Generally I can’t bring myself to hate anyone, real or fictional, but Stalker McGee is a rare exception. Someone lock this psycho in prison! Have her be run over by a reindeer instead of Grandma! Let Godzilla step on her! Force her to watch Care Bears Nutcracker Suite on a loop! Just make her go away!
Uh, what was I saying? Oh right, the party! Putting aside Stalker McGee’s never-ending creepiness, a fun time ensues as crazy costumes are tried on, violent video games are played, Love Actually is watched for the ten-thousandth time, and depriving dares are dished out. All that and a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken! Like most chapters in Komi’s ongoing quest to make friends, I found this one to be endlessly endearing. It was well written and delightfully drawn, each character succeeding in stealing the spotlight, for better or worse. At the heart of it all was Komi and Tadano, the two getting along as splendidly as ever. Even without dialogue I could easily understand what they were feeling, which was certainly a nice antithesis to Cardcaptor. Still, much as I was miffed over Cardcaptor’s lack of clarity, I know Dani only brought it up under the assumption that I’d enjoy it. That’s why I don’t mind my pals' never-ending peer pressure, since their pleas are loving ones meant to broaden my horizons. Though there are some instances where my friends make me kranky.
