So yes! The basis of the project is there are 10 murderers in a supernaturally prison and you (through a semi-audience insert, gender-neutral Child Warden, Es) must decide whether or not you forgive them. The cases are split between "they would be sentenced as a murderer irl" and "they wouldn't."

All the cases are emotionally messy and the cast diverse in age/upbringing, making it really easy to find characters you sympathize with. The murders center around a ton of societal debates -- Direct murders involve mental illness, bullying, the ethics of sacrificing some to save others. The latter category involves topics like someone else getting hurt/killing themselves because of someone else' actions, where the line of self-defense lies, etc. Each case is written with extreme care and knowledge of the kinds of people involved, and the voice dramas always leave me staring at the wall contemplating everything...

The project itself is interactive, and each character gets three trials on which the audience votes "forgiven" or "unforgiven." Verdicts from trial one resulted in interpersonal conflicts within the prison, making second trial verdicts really difficult since the audience was trying to balance voting in a way that stays true to themself while also keeping everyone safe. (Spoiler alert -- IT DIDN'T WORK 😭 The big news yesterday was that trial three is starting soon, and three beloved characters died because of our choices 😭😭😭😭) But this interactive element really brings it all together. Despite feeling like the World's Worst Group Project some days, it's really impactful hearing so many perspectives reflecting on the dangers of any/all judgements.

BUT it's all about the music :D Paired with a ~10 minute voice drama, each crime is communicated through music videos, and in a genre that matches the character, so once again there's something that appeals to everyone >:3 (I'll admit it's all jpop, but) there's a pop character, a rock character, a metal(?) character, a musical theater character, there are songs that are classy and cutsey and child-like and so on. I was shocked that I've enjoyed every single song in the discography, but even you're really picky there's at least one character who will probably hit your vibe!

The music videos are visually cool, the art only becoming more stunning as the project goes on. All the vocalists have beautiful, unique voices and are exceedingly talented. They put their best performances into their heartwrenching songs and voice dramas. The song producers have made insane new songs as well as arranging fun bonus covers for Deco*27's vocaloid songs. Here's a playlist just of the music! (Everyone and their mother has a story playlist lmao but if anyone wants mine hmu 😎👍)

Anyway SORRY that was so much rambling and I didn't even give any context to anything on my dash asdfgh. Uhhh long story short with spoilers -- Out of my three favorites, one just died presumably because the doctor keeping her alive was killed by a kid who loved her (and was, in painful irony, trying to save her by killing the doctor.) One has likely reached such a low point that he lost his fiery spark of a hero and is now leaning into religious cult teachings. And the other is horribly isolated and cold because no one is taking her seriously and is too focused on themselves and their own biases to actually treat her life with the dignity and complexity it deserves.
