From my source, during Future Boy Zoltron, Raven Molisee was asked to be more on model with their storyboards which... for a show that prided itself on being off-model felt a bit odd. That and some other behind the scenes nonsense that was happening around the time of s4's production wore him down, causing him to leave at the end of the season, the last scene of Are You My Dad? being the straw that broke the camel's back. Before he quit, he was apparently slated to do The Off Colors, in which he would have to board the sequence of Lars dying.............. Given how much Raven appears to love Lars, I understand why he quit.
damn i knew about the on model thing being a source of contention for him but having to board lars’ dying sequence.. i never expected that but having a favorite character can be real business. i’m also pretty sure zuke left during s4 as well which im most curious about; was s4 production that bad that both of them left? is it unrelated? did one lead to another?

Natalie Wynn's "J.K. Rowling" and Disruptive use of Women's Rhetorical Tropes: A Defiant Reply to Transmisogyny
Tumblr media
ContraPoints, surrounded by an opulent, candle-lit set and adorned in witch's garb, leisurely pours champagne into her glass — she's ready to breach the internet's hottest topic of January, 2021: her childhood idol being outed as a transphobe (link here). The video itself being over an hour and a half long, I would be hard-pressed to claim that I could ever hope to cover its entirety, comprehensively, in a single post. So to save-face, I'll be dedicating this space only to breaking down her most frequently used rhetorical tropes, one by one.
Irreverence
"Joanne, I wanna talk to you, Joanne! [Fans herself with a rainbow paper fan with the word "BIOLOGICAL" written across it] What is it about Joannes? I can't catch a break from these people" (00:23-00:29, emphasis added).
Wynn's introductory lines immediately open a dialogue with J.K. Rowling — however, this invitation of discourse is defiantly "irreverent" (reminiscent of Nomy Lamm's punk-feminist style in "It’s a Big Fat Revolution” (1995)). Contrapoints, herself a transgender woman, is aware that her very existence is considered in opposition to the TERF-ideology that Rowling subscribes to. Thus, she's rather playful — even openly disrespectful — with her diction: calling the British author by her first name in a mocking-tone and flaunting her own trans identity to the camera (in a way that would likely offend the fragile sensibilities of a transphobe). Her personal tone (with ample use of the pronoun "I") servers a duplicitous purpose: a simultaneous message of "sit down and listen" and a fair degree of "I don't care if you can't accept me."
"So, now that 2020 is finally over, I think we can let the record conclusively show that it was a year whomst is bad. And on top of everything else going on, truly the last thing we needed was the author of Harry Potter coming forward to announce there's two things she can't stand: bigotry, and the transgenders. (00:31 - 00:50, emphasis added).
Finally broaching the subject at hand directly, Wynn employs kairos alongside her irreverence. Kairos, or the rhetorical use of an "opportune moment," holds incredible weight in the first month after 2020: the year in which the whole world fell into a stasis. Characterizing Rowling's transphobia as a collective "the last thing we needed," is also rather dismissive — she unites herself with her audience with the pronoun "we" and invites us all to groan at the exasperating nature of Rowling's bigotry.
Tumblr media
Claiming the Right to Speak / Personal Experience
"This is a painful topic for me all around because, as a transgender woman, I am honestly really hurt by a lot of the things Joanne has said in the last year. But I also know what it's like to be the target of a Twitter mob" (01:36-01:47).
As she begins to touch on the topic, Natalie Wynn claims the right to speak on the issue of Rowling's transphobia — a type of bigotry that directly effects her. However, Wynn also situates herself partially with Rowling in her acknowledgement that receiving Twitter backlash is a terrifying experience (an experience, she argues, that the human brain is not prepared to handle the scale of, 01:49-02:39). In treating her subject with such dignity — and adding her own deeply personal account— ContraPoints creates a credible ethos in the beginning of her video essay. The audience is inclined to listen to someone who has been directly effected by the subject of Rowling's controversy (transphobia) and someone who is, rather compassionately, willing to empathize with those who would wish her harm. Although the generally sassy, glamorous, and irreverent tone of the video still appears soon after (see: the above image), her opening up for this somber moment garners a fair degree pathos in the viewer — we, as human beings, are inclined to sympathize with people who are open about being hurt.
Tumblr media
Metis (Embodied Rhetoric)
[The following ContraPoints quote is addressing the above J.K. Rowling tweet, content warning for transmisogyny] "Transphobes love to play this game where they pretend that trans people just don't understand basic biology, that's our problem! As if I didn't start taking female hormones because I'm acutely aware that my body is not the same as a cis woman's body, that sex is real. "[Fictional TERF character] You will never be a woman, Nathan. Every cell in your body is male and has a Y chromosome." Really? That's crazy. How you'd you learn so much about science? You know I don't really feel the need to have a second X chromosome, I get by with only one, I make it work. I actually like the Y chromosome, I think it's a little more dainty, you know, it's little softer, a little more petite. The X chromosome has a lot of extra appendages, and don't you think? I don't need anymore of those, thanks. No trans person thinks it's possible to change chromosomal sex and to pretend otherwise is to argue in bad faith" (08:47-09:34).
If you can excuse my gargantuan quote, I hope you'll agree that the dialogue ContraPoints builds here was just too good to cut short. Within this excerpt, we see Wynn's use of irreverance and personal experience blended seamlessly together. For this YouTuber, the personal is perpetually political — especially when her own identity is constantly taken as an ideological stance. She uses her own expertise in trans issues to pick apart just how disingenuous Rowling's assertions are — even accusing her of "argue[ing] in bad faith" with her reductive claims (later, taking specific issue with how Rowling treats trans-ness as a costume). But, here, she also directly invokes another rhetorical trope: that of metis, or embodied rhetoric. Natalie Wynn specifically references her transgender body as a sort of counterpoint to the condescending "sex is real" claims by TERFs. She cites her intrinsic desire to pursue hormonal therapy as evidence that she — and other trans people like her — are all "acutely aware" that there are chromosomal differences between themselves and cis women. With this salient statement, she then follows with some humor: which, again, utilizes her trans body in her rhetoric. Her characterization of the Y chromosome as "more petite" and playful declaration of not needing "extra appendages" lightens up the often dark tone that arguing for trans rights and liberation can take. The clever points she makes are by no means weakened by her humor — if anything, the audience is more willing to listen to someone who can "joke about themselves" (so to speak) while still arguing an incredibly important message.
Tumblr media
Naming and Defining Issues
"When I see Joanne tweeting about how trans people think sex isn't real and they're erasing same-sex attraction and they're silencing women, alarm bells are ringing because I recognize these as familiar transphobic talking points, specifically TERF talking points. "TERF" means trans exclusionary radical feminism. God are we still talking about this? I promise this is the last time. So TERFism is a hate movement that disguises transphobia as feminism. ... The fundamental problem with TERFs is not that they're mean. It's that they're politically reactionary, they want to reverse the progress of trans liberation." (14:05-16:02)
In her definition of TERF rhetoric, Natalie Wynn outlines some dog-whistles that are obvious to her, as a trans woman. She calmly explains to the viewer that, oftentimes in the present-day, rhetorics of exclusion are thoroughly disguised; TERFs, specifically, hide their rampant transphobia as a form of feminism. However, she further clarifies that the specific "danger" that TERFs pose is not from their cruelty — it's from their fervent dedication to strip away trans rights through political means. By specifying this danger, Natalie Wynn shifts the conversation away from empty discussion of offensiveness/terminology, to issues which directly affect the lives of trans people every day.
[This portion addresses the picture above] Also an act of naming and defining, ContraPoints makes a distinction between "Direct" and "Indirect Bigotry." She argues that many people envision bigotry as a festering, public, frothing-at-the-mouth hatred — a phenomenon she dubs "the Westboro Baptist Church theory of bigotry" (20:06). In bringing attention to the human tendency to think of people as exclusively practicing "direct bigotry" — envisioning them as a sort of delusional "other" — she then forces the audience to contemplate the relative omni-presence of the more covert (and possibly alluring) "indirect bigotry." This definition, crucially, requires introspection. By allowing ourselves to think of bigots not exclusively as "Westboros," we're made to adopt a much more nuanced view of subjects (most) generally prefer to keep black-and-white. Natalie Wynn uses her J.K. Rowling case study to complicate this 2D view of "The Bigot," inviting others to more carefully examine how politically reactionary views develop.
Phew, this was probably the longest post I've ever typed up on tumblr! Hopefully, I succeeded in demystifying (or at least adding clarity to) some of the specific tropes ContraPoints uses (that are common to women's rhetorics as a whole). Thanks for reading if you stuck around this long, and my ask box is always open!

Movie Criticism in a Modern Era
In 1904, near the birth of film itself, a paper was published called: The Optical Lantern and Cinematograph Journal.  This paper was a one-of-a-kind at the time, full of interviews, analysis of equipment and methods, letters to editors, and even cartoons that made fun of stereotypes in the movie business that we can recognize today.
But that’s not the most interesting thing about this paper.
What was the most interesting thing is that, amongst all of that content, there was also a series of critical reviews of upcoming films, describing a handful of plots of a few films.
The journal would continue to do something like this for the eleven months before it was cancelled, but not before starting something that we are extremely familiar with today: film-criticism.
All through the 1920s, movie critics were becoming more popular, with newspapers hiring them to start analyzing and reviewing upcoming films.  This continued into the 1930s, where the obsession with stardom boosted not only the movies and actors, but the critics, as well.  More and more film critics were showing up to red-carpet events, but even with this rise in fame, it wasn’t until the 1940s where movie criticism really took off: when the analysis essay was born.
Movie critics started to write essays full of personality, persuasive papers designed to convince audiences of their argument.  During this time, something else major happened: movie criticism went mainstream.  Critics began working for newspapers, magazines, and, as time went by, even on television, becoming household names.  There is perhaps no better example than the famous duo Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel, although others, such as Pauline Kael, Leonard Maltin, and Judith Crist are also contenders for some of the best-known movie critics of all time.
The words of these critics was often highly valued in the film community.  They are professionals, well-qualified to study and examine both new and older movies, typically possessing academic backgrounds in film.  And then something happened that put an entirely new spin on movie criticism: the internet.
Blogs.  YouTube channels.  Websites like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, began to rise in popularity, and channels like CinemaSins, Cinema Snob, and Nostalgia Critic, began popping up all over the place.  Even now, there is a vast ocean of movie review blogs and analysis, not to mention YouTube channels and community review websites.  In other words, the ‘power’ of film criticism shifted: from the academics to the amateurs.
While there are still qualified critics who post their reviews, more influential by far is the score on Rotten Tomatoes, or the opinion of a favored internet personality.  Once that Metacritic score is set, so, it would seem, is the movie’s reputation.  We are living in an age where the average joe can make a blog, a YouTube video, or review on Flixter.  Even I could be considered an amateur film critic.
The question is, is this a good thing or a bad thing?
On one hand, those of us without degrees in film are being listened to, and can influence how movies are made and how they are received with our opinions.  There are more and more avenues for us to explore our opinions, and more resources for us to back our own opinions up by listening to analyses and arguments from a variety of different places.  The movie industry is no longer in the hands of the ‘chosen few’, the ‘elite’ and educated.  Now, the power is shared equally, if not disproportionately with the audiences, the average movie watchers.  You and me.
On the other hand?
Without a level of objectivity about film, some of these movie watchers who post their opinions online do so without reserve, leaving sometimes vitriolic reviews with little to no reason for their hatred beyond personal preference.  It is thanks to this modern phenomenon that has left the paths open for raging, ranting reviews against various films that simply don’t appeal to them, without rhyme or reason.  Alternatively, other resources choose to look at films and nitpick them endlessly, adding up minuscule details and ‘plot holes’ and claiming that these make a film good or bad.
It is this type of thinking that leads to the Oscar viewership dropping.  It is this phenomenon that leads people to value the score on Rotten Tomatoes over that of the critics.
Once again, it leads one to wonder: is this a good or bad thing?
With this decline in interest in the critics relatively objective verdict of a film due to claims of the critics and audiences never agreeing, all that’s left is to look at what the audiences have to say.  Many movie goers point to the box office, or popularity of a film to decide whether a film is good instead, but by that logic, Transformers and The Fast and the Furious are on a level similar to The Lion King and Mission Impossible.
In other words, objectivity can very easily be lost if you pay attention to a movie’s popularity over its quality.
The balance between popularity and quality is not a strange one, especially on this blog.  Also familiar to us is the struggle between the word of the critics and the word of the audiences.  In an era where anybody can influence how a movie is viewed, it can seem like it’s more important than ever to choose a side, to figure out whose advice they are going to take.  Who we’re going to listen to.  Does the word of the critics mean anything, or do they simply laud ‘artistic’ films, looking down their noses at the more comprehensible fare that the viewers are more likely to see?  Do audiences know an objectively good film when they see it, or will they go down defending popcorn flicks as Oscar contenders?
Which side are we to pick?
As an avid moviewatcher who both enjoys film, and wants to be objective about it, my argument comes down very closely to the same opinions I held in the ‘objectivity vs. subjectivity’ article I posted: a little of both.
Is the word of the critics valid?  Yes.  Critics are people too, and their opinions are (supposed to be) founded on academia.  Critics can tell us if a film is objectively good, if the production quality is up-to-snuff, if the performances, pacing, cinematography and story are, by the standards of ‘good filmmaking’, good.  By the same token, they can only get you so far.
Any consumption of art is subjective, and the same goes for film.  We can search for like-minded reviewers and analysts who we can determine our own judgements over whether or not to see a film, or try to figure out what you liked about it.  In other words, there doesn’t have to be a one-or-the-other argument.
So, to answer our previous question, is this new era of the everyman film critic a good thing or a bad thing?
Honestly?  I’d say it’s a good thing.
Right now, there are a plethora of opinions that are more likely to match up with the opinions of the audience because they are the audience.  By applying analysis and critical thinking to the films that people are interested in, more people are encouraged to think about the films they are watching instead of simply discounting the opinions of the critics, thinking of them as the ‘Hollywood Elite’.  Now, there are more resources than ever for finding arguments for and against specific viewpoints or analyses of certain elements of certain films, genres, even directors and actors.  We are living in an age where I can type in the name of a film and find more analysis than I know what to do with.
Yes, that’s a good thing.  We have more viewpoints to compare, more things to think about, and we can even more easily spot when the critics and the audiences’ opinions do match up.  Cases like Star Wars, Dead Poets Society, and Forrest Gump prove that it is possible for the two to agree, and the increase in access to a wider variety of opinions and reasons for opinions can help up-and-coming film critics and movie-goers alike think about what they’re watching, whether they agree with the reviewer or not.
In the end, the purpose of film criticism and analysis is to inform an audience about movies, and point out elements that casual movie-goers might not be paying much attention to.  They exist to summarize, highlight, and explain what was good about a film, and what was bad about it.  This serves as an excellent aide to our own thought processes as we watch movies ourselves, helping us figure out what we liked or did not like, and why, whether the critic has a degree in film or not.  Film critics are there, especially in multitude, to add to the movie experience, to help us think, and to provide information about movies.
In an era where anyone can create a YouTube account or a blog and start reviewing, there are dangers of oversaturation and, of course, there’s always the possibility that you simply won’t agree with any of the opinions out there.  There are those who base their reviews solely in subjectivity, and those who do the opposite.  But these are problems easily solved, once again, with critical thinking, and using the feedback of others to help us formulate our opinions about whether or not to watch a film, or even to help us think about one we’ve already seen.
A degree in film is not needed to smartly evaluate a film.  What is needed is fairness in judgement, and a keen eye.  Knowing what to look for certainly helps, but in the end, it’s about offering a thoughtful opinion on something in order to inform and persuade, the same as it has been since 1904.  Everyone has their own thoughts to share.
Movie criticism hasn’t changed fundamentally.  The things that make a movie good are the same: story, characters, cinematography, performances, and all the rest.  What has changed is the number of people, and the number of ways, that those things are analyzed.  What we have now that we didn’t before is, primarily, variety, and the technology to spread our ideas.
All in all?  This new era of media analysis is far from bad.  What matters now is making sure that it’s used well.  And that’s what this blog is all about.
Thank you guys so much for reading!  Please, don’t forget that the ask box is always open if you have any ideas, suggestions, discussion topics, questions, or just want to say hi!  I hope to see you guys in the next article.

TES III - Morrowind: Environmental Storytelling at its Finest
You are a new-fangled adventurer, fresh off the ship. Eager to explore the newly-discovered, alien world, you buy some supplies at the town merchant and set off immediately. But on the very outskirts of the harbour town, barely few hundred meters from the last house, something completely unexpected happens. You hear a heart-rending scream, and then, out of thin air, a human being appears some 30 meters above your head. Of course, the laws of gravity apply even on this fantastical world, and the inevitable happens. Next thing you know, the poor person is laying dead in front of you. Who was he? Why did he fall from the sky? Would it be a criminal offense to wear his expensive robes?
youtube
For many, including the author of this essay, this was probably the first time they have experienced environmental storytelling. Henry Jenkins says that “environmental storytelling creates the preconditions for an immersive narrative experience in at least one of four ways: spatial stories can evoke pre-existing narrative associations; they can provide a staging ground where narrative events are enacted; they may embed narrative information within their mise-en-scene; or they provide resources for emergent narratives. In other words, this time Bart Stewart’s, it “characterises environmental storytelling as something that “shows the final outcome of a sequence of events, then it invites players to make up their own stories about what happened to cause that outcome”. Which is exactly what happened in the first paragraph.
The game discussed is the third rendition of The Elder Scrolls saga, Morrowind. Released in 2002, it jump-started the popularity of this series. It is also the installment that is universally celebrated by fans of the Elder Scrolls series as the best one so far. The reasons for this can be manifold, but an average fan is most likely not going to mention its ultra-realistic graphics or ground-breaking combat system. Admittedly, compared to other titles in that era of game development, it left a lot to be desired. The game was riddled with bugs, the visuals were slightly outdated even on launch, and the game mechanics were clunky at best. But it did not matter at all, because the game excelled in other aspects, primarily world-building, an attribute closely tied to environmental storytelling. Indeed, without it, it would have never reached its popularity. “Worldbuilding will never save a bad game, but it is an element that elevates good games to something greater”, Josh Bycer says. This is, objectively, the strongest part of the game, and probably of the whole Elder Scrolls series. But it is Morrowind that resonates with the fans of the series the most. Bethesda, the creators of the series, were never fans of hand-holding, and Morrowind shows that. Instead of a modern GPS system with a minimap showing all the quest locations, the player is provided with a written description of their destination, usually with some landmark being mentioned to further narrow the area that the player has to explore in order to arrive at their point of interest. Not only that this makes careful worldbuilding a crucial part of the game, without which the player would not even be able to progress, but it opens door to environmental storytelling.
Tumblr media
There is a moment in the game which serves as a great representation of such conjunction. The island of Morrowind, from which the game got its name, is filled with ruins. They were once inhabited by the Dwemer, an ancient race of technically-gifted dwarves. But for some reason, they have all suddenly disappeared, leaving those ruins behind them. Whatever happened, no-one is able to figure it out. The player visits the ruins on many occasions, when questing or exploring. And the latter is sometimes much more rewarding. As seen in the picture, there are two piles of ash on a bed frame, a flask of oil and an elongated “dwemer tube”. Now, a player who does not pay much attention to detail might not even notice this, storming through this location on their way to the next goal. Someone else might just disregard it as clutter and useless rubble. But there are people who will see a story behind this. A story that one might consider to be the very last romance of the now extinct race. Scenaros pertaining to as to what could have happened immediately start racing through the head of this attentive player. Of course, the game can be completed without even stumbling upon the whole dwemer mystery, as the knowledge of what happened to them has no direct impact on the main quest. Besides, it is never directly revealed, the player can only speculate and ultimately decide on what the cause could have been, modifying and creating their own lore. This is exactly what made Bethesda such an accomplished developer. They do not explicitly tell the players what to do, they just provide them with tools necessary to enjoy the vast, open world packed with experiences like this.
Another intriguing subject that the players may discover on their journeys throughout Tamriel (the world of Morrowind) is this seemingly uninteresting pool of water. But upon further inspection, a small information pop-up shows on the screen, informing the player that they have just discovered the Pool of Forgetfulness. The cursor also changes, as with any usable object, but if the player decides to press the interaction key, nothing even happens. Perhaps it was a deliberate decision on the part of the developers. Or they just forgot to code it in. That is still, almost twenty years after the release, a subject of discussion. Some might consider it useless, some will consider it a brilliant addition to already clever world and narrative design of this RPG masterpiece.
Tumblr media
As Shepard notes in his article, “If video games shared their entire narrative in dialogue and cutscenes, the medium would be little more than a film with interactive portions.  Games can do a lot of storytelling in their interactive portions, especially through the environment.” And this is doubly true in the genre of open-world role-playing games, with Morrowind being the perfect representative of such. The developers and writers behind the game were fully aware of that and employed environmental storytelling to its fullest potential. Having it in the game gives the player a possibility to expand their experience, unconstrained by its mechanics or predetermined story. In other words, it is the discrepancy between the actual syuzhet and the story itself that leads to an enriched and enhanced playthroughs. This is also similar to what Jenkins tries to explain when talking about embedded narrative. Citing the author himself: “According to this model, narrative comprehension is an active process by which viewers assemble and make hypothesis about likely narrative developments on the basis of information drawn from textual cues and clues” (Jenkins 9). The only limit is, admittedly, the very imagination of the player.
This non-linear openness of the world has been, surprisingly, a kind of a double-sided axe. Most of the reviews back in 2002 were raving about all the different aspects of the game, but only a few of them gave it the absolute top mark. This very excerpt from an IGN article written by Jason Bates describes it well: “Finally, I'll admit Morrowind isn't for everyone. It's a huge, sprawling, megapolis of a game that can take a couple hours just to get into and a hundred hours to complete. In an industry where most games present clear, linear paths guiding you from one pre-defined problem (a jumping puzzle, a monster, or some other dexterity test) to the next, some gamers will find Morrowind's open-endedness unfamiliar, bewildering, even perplexing. They'll sit there, waiting for someone to come along and tell them what to do.”
This is a very fitting description. With Morrowind, environmental storytelling is not only widely used, it is in a way necessary to provide the player with complete enjoyment and immersion. Some people, when given this unrestricted freedom, will feel lost. The fact that the game is now 17 years old can not be omitted either. Using modern standards, it is quite inaccessible for an average, casual player. The responsibility placed on the player when it comes to experiencing the world the way it is meant to be experienced is now something extra, something that requires additional effort. The later installments, Oblivion and Skyrim, are somewhat more streamlined, bearing more resemblance to this roller-coaster type of entertainment where the player sits back and enjoys the ride. But if the player is willing to overcome this small obstacle, they will be rewarded by a fascinating storytelling experience that is still as magical and mysterious as it has been some 17 years ago.

Selling house is a really intricate procedure that needs a lot of understanding in the field of real estate as well as patience. If you were to think buying a home is a much difficult process than selling one, you are mistaken. The reason being selling a home is an equally complex process, where several factors have to be cared for at once. Beginning with fixing the interiors and exteriors to locating the buyer that is right can pay the right price, everything has to be so as and also as preferred for the deal to take place. The real estate market is perhaps one of the most lucrative markets in terms of investment, since the type of returns that the real estate market is proven to give, other investment tools can rarely match. That you want to shell out or want to sell off your current residence, looking for a price higher than the current market price is a common goal for most of the sellers whether you have an investment property. And, to an extent, this will be legitimate as well since the price of the real estate property is planning to increase over time anyway. Thus giving the sensation to the sellers that their asking price should cover at least the following couple of years’ going rate. In the event that property is nicely and centrally situated in a area that is popular has sufficient space, is smartly designed, have all of the basic amenities in place, is well maintained, and all sorts of the paper works have been in order, asking for the higher price shouldn’t pose any problem during the selling process. In popular areas, often there is a high demand, and thus, discovering the right buyer who is able to afford to pay a bit of a markup within the going rate shouldn't be an issue. Shopping for a greater price is a standard thing in the true estate market, it the seller himself whether it is the real estate agent or firm who is doing the selling on your behalf or is. To an extent, it is this practice of increasing the price tag considerably and often for nearly every sale and every property is exactly what has resulted in a general boom into the estate market that is real. Whether or not your home can be found in a nice area, it's not always possible to bag a great price, because of buyers aside from considering the area, also considers many other factors. How could be the homely house maintained? Do you know the conditions that the home is facing currently? Which are the fixes that need to be manufactured? What fixtures need attention that is immediate? What will be the cost to fix and fix the nagging problems existing in the home?
BigCommerce
Does the homely house need a paint job? These and similar factors could be considered by the buyers, and in the event your house is not well maintained, then forget about asking for the higher price than your home may be worth, you would face a difficult time asking for the existing market price as well. This is because the goal of the buyers would be to cut out of the repairing and fixing costs of the home from the asking price. If the house is old and it shows, do a paint job regarding the interior therefore the exterior to provide it a brand new and look that is fresh. The idea is to make your house look attractive, both from the inside as well as outside to make the buyers with deep pockets fall in love with your home. Search for the fixes to be produced in your own home, whether it's your driveway that needs to be maintained, garden that should be mowed, washroom fixtures that require to be replaced, kitchen fixtures that need to be repaired or replaced, any electrical or water leakage which should be taken care of, and so on. Be sure that the homely house is in prepared to move around in shape so that the buyer will not find any fault or reason to compel you to drop the price. Take attractive pictures of the property and post it on the web on real estate buying and selling sites. Good high-quality pictures would attract more buyers, and much more buyers would automatically help in increasing the chances of getting the right buyer. Negotiate smartly and smoothly if it is a real estate agent or the buyers. Usually do not sound or look as you need certainly to sell the home urgently or you are in dire need regarding the money you'll get by selling the home, no matter if that just could be the actual situation. Desperation is a simple giveaway, additionally the smart buyers would easily read involving the lines and attempt to take advantage of your financial predicament to lessen the price that is asking. These are the things that are few should keep in mind and do to get a higher price than your home will probably be worth. It would need some research, effort, money, and time to get things in order, nonetheless it will be worth every penny. These few changes can drastically increase the cost of the home. Before going directly into sell your home, you have to do your research in regards to the current market price in your area.
Exactly what are the prices other houses that are similar your neighborhood are bagging, what the asking charges for similar properties in your town are showing online, what are the advantages that your house has over other properties which will help bag you a higher price, and so forth. Researching would allow you to provide the understanding of the home and also help you negotiate well during interaction utilizing the agent or the customer. Also, ensure that your entire paperwork is to be able, all obligations that are financial the home are cleared, and all sorts of the dues are paid such as for instance house tax, electricity bills, and so forth. If you will find any legal disputes over the house, be sure to be rid of those just before considering selling the home. It's also advisable to talk to the real estate professionals and firms in case you have any doubts in regards to the going rates, and will ask them in what can be carried out to have a much better price. Marketing needs to be done in the right solution to attract more buyers. Within the otherwise case, even in the event your home is well maintained plus in good shape, there is lesser amounts of buyers coming up and showing interest. You need to market your home well to reach out to buyers that are potential can afford to pay for the purchase price you are interested in. First and foremost, when you are interested in an increased price than what your house will probably be worth; you must have a lot of patience. It will require a amount that is considerable of and effort, nevertheless the wait could be worth every penny. Sometimes locating the higher price is not a task that is difficult and quite often it will take longer. Stop shaming recipe bloggers for writing a lot
Tumblr media
Every so often, someone will act very angry online because a recipe they clicked on has "too much text." They wanted to make mushroom ravioli, but instead had to scroll through a bunch of words about what mushroom ravioli means to a blogger's family. Boring!
It's true that many (if not most) food bloggers write long narratives preceding their recipes. Sometimes, they explain how they developed the recipe. Other times, they share why they chose to post this particular food, or explain the modifications they've made to accommodate family members with dietary restrictions. They might share a story about the dish providing them comfort in a difficult time, or how cooking the dish with a loved one healed a broken relationship. Food is personal, after all; it comes with stories.
So why do so many people rush to mock them?
Cadry Nelson, a food blogger who runs the vegan website Cadry's Kitchen, includes narratives with her recipes regularly. (She's also written an essay about recipe narratives.) This is partially because she wanted to document her transition to veganism, the context in which she developed much of her work. In doing so, she'd create a reference point for readers curious about going vegan themselves.
"I was trying a lot of produce I’d never had before, as well as re-creating old familiar flavors but without meat, dairy, and eggs," she explained in an interview. "I didn’t have many other friends who were vegan at that point."

This summer it will have been 9 years since we loaded up all of our belongings into a U-Haul & moved across country from Los Angeles back to Iowa, where David & I were born & raised. On the way, we stopped at FUD restaurant in Kansas City. The restaurant is gone now. But they were known for their raw dishes & jackfruit recipes. I especially loved their jackfruit Reuben. I figured it was high time I made my own version. The jackfruit is pink from beets. It’s topped with homemade #vegan Thousand Island dressing, @goldminenaturalfoodco garlic kraut, and beautiful marbled rye from @newpioneercoop. Get the recipe on the blog. Sharing this information doesn't just benefit her readers, either. It also helps her secure a place in the saturated food blog realm. "Through these posts, I’ve gotten to know bloggers’ flavor preferences too," Nelson said. By sharing stories on blogs, people get to know the types of foods [and] flavors that specific recipe creators enjoy. You figure out who is a good match for your own palate."
So why do people have such an issue with people writing about their own food? It seems to come down to convenience. Generally, perturbed readers complain that it takes too long for them to scroll down to the recipe itself.
Historian Kevin Kruse, for example, tweeted his disdain for recipe narratives last weekend: "Hey, cooking websites?" he wrote. "I don't really need a thousand words about how you discovered the recipe or the feelings it evoked for you ... I'm trying to feed my family. No need to curate the experience for me."
SEE ALSO: Why the '15-minute recipe' sets you up to fail
"GIMME THE RECIPE HON MY SCROLL FINGER HURTS," tweeted Chelsea Peretti last November.
Admittedly, it is irritating when anything is difficult to find on the internet, especially when we've come to expect an easy-as-pie user experience from every app and every website. It can feel like a slog to scroll through paragraphs of text when all you want is a list of ingredients.
But the thing to interrogate here isn't necessarily whether blocks of text are annoying — it's why people think these particular blocks of text don't deserve to exist.
Nelson thinks there's an element of sexism to the critiques she sees about recipe writing. Home cooking is still a deeply gendered pursuit, and writers whose work centers on home cooking are still perceived as less professional, less valuable, and less worthy voices.  "The feeling seems to be that they don't think these writers have something of value to offer," Nelson said.
There's been high-profile backlash to the backlash against recipe narratives. After Kruse's tweet, Smitten Kitchen creator Deb Perelman tweeted a thread on the matter, encouraging recipe writers to "write as long and as in-depth as your heart desires about recipes and anything else they drum up in your mind and ignore anyone who says you shouldn't."
1. These websites are free to read and free to not read. /3

2. It's mostly women telling these stories. Congratulations, you've found a new, not particularly original, way to say "shut up and cook." [I just don't see don't see the same pushback when male chefs write about their wild days or basically anything. Do you?] /4
— deb perelman (@debperelman) February 16, 2019
3. Not that you asked, but I love context, both in the recipe's development and the way it knits into your life. I wish more people who cooked got to tell their stories. /5
— deb perelman (@debperelman) February 16, 2019
Like Nelson, she also called out detractors' casual sexism. "Congratulations, you've found a new, not particularly original, way to say 'shut up and cook,'" she tweeted. "I just don't see don't see the same pushback when male chefs write about their wild days or basically anything. Do you?"
"I wish more people who cooked got to tell their stories," she added.
There's also a more technical element at play where recipe narratives are concerned: search engine optimization (SEO). Recipe bloggers want to catch the attention of the illusive Google algorithm —  and, ideally, land their recipe on the coveted first page — so they must demonstrate "authority" in their field. This means more comprehensive content, which is really hard to pull off with a concise recipe alone. (Tons of people will be using the phrase "apple crumble," for example, but only you can write your own story about it.)
"When I’m writing, I try to tell a story that has a hook as well as please[s] the Google algorithm," Nelson said. "I do keyword research ... I see what kinds of questions people have around the topic, and look for ways to anticipate their problems, and answer their questions, so that they will have a successful cooking experience. Lately, I’ve been adding more step-by-step pictures of how to make dishes, as well as videos, because Google says that readers want that."
Even though she's noticed people criticizing lengthy posts, Nelson maintains that writing a lot — authoritatively, of course — is what's going to get eyes on her recipes. "People say they want shorter posts, but Google values information," she said. "It’s hard to give information without using some words along the way."
SEO and marketing experts agree that Nelson's approach is a smart one, especially in such a saturated landscape. "Because a recipe usually consists of a listing of ingredients and steps, it’s often very difficult for a search engine to discern what this article is trying to convey," Pete Herrnreiter, who is the VP of digital strategy at The Motion Agency, explained via email. "By developing a richer upfront with background on the dish ... it [helps to] define the post."
Content strategist Abby Sanders, who works for Von Mack Agency, also emphasized the advantages of differentiating one's recipe from the pack. "These days, search engines are pretty effective at determining whether a page can serve as an 'expert source' on a specific query," she said. "So any additional content that includes certain keywords, as long as it's coherent and well-written, will improve that page's ranking."

Who'd have thought two such aggressively wholesome ingredients could taste so exceptional together? To be honest, not me. But we come back to this again and again whenever we are looking for a hearty vegetarian meal because it tastes like a luxury, not a compromise, especially heaped on grilled bread. [Spinach and Chickpeas on smittenkitchen.com or linked in profile]
A post shared by smitten kitchen (@smittenkitchen) on Feb 19, 2019 at 9:10am PST
As a caveat, Sanders mentioned, there are "plenty of other factors that play a role in rankings, such as domain authority, links to that page, and the list goes on. But from a sheer content standpoint, it does make good sense for a food blogger to write some extra, interesting copy around their subject."
So, fine. Finding a list of chili ingredients would be easier if we didn't have to scroll. But recipe bloggers are writers, and they have stories to share that are poignant, funny, and valuable — even if you (and I) don't love every single one you read. And if you really don't like the narratives? There are plenty of places for you to find story-free recipes online, though you might have to pay for a subscription to see some of them. Also, cookbooks exist.
"My food blog is my own. It’s my creative space. I spend a lot of time testing the recipes, taking photographs, making videos, and writing my stories," Nelson said. "If people aren’t interested in any aspect, so be it."
"My blog is Cadry’s Kitchen. It’s literally the place where I cook," she added. "I don’t know why I would write myself out of it."

“Growing Up, I Only Saw Half of Myself Represented On TV—That Needs to Change Now“: A personal essay from Bustle‘s Andrea Lausell about representations of Latinx people with disabilities. See also: Melissa Hung’s Huffington Post piece on “the most damaging way movies portray people with disabilities” and an article by prominent activist Vilissa Thompson on her Ramp Your Voice blog about portrayals of disability in the Black community.
“As I’ve grown into my adult years, it has made me happy to see Latinx-centered media begin to share stories of other marginalized non-disabled groups in the Latinx community (LGBTQ+, Afro-Latinx, Indigenous-Latinx). Representation is slowly improving with how these identities are viewed with TV shows like ‘One Day at a Time’ having a teenager like Elena Alvarez come out as queer and work through the emotions while seeking acceptance from her Cuban family. ‘Jane the Virgin’ highlights characters of color tackling the topic of immigration, all while making a political statement about our government and its treatment of people seeking a better life. Although these strides are giving us a diverse representation of Latinx culture and are being received fairly well by the community for being marathon-worthy, if Disabled Latinx were to be included in the narrative, would the public receive it as well? I’ve noticed that non-Latinx communities are just starting to embrace disabled narratives on their TV screens. Often, disabled representation in Hollywood, like in the novel-turned-film ‘Me Before You’ starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin, portrays the harmful stereotype of disability being a burden. However, shows like ABC’s sitcom ‘Speechless’ have been a game changers for showing a disabled lead character happy with their life. But that’s just starting to happen now. Growing up, I learned to be ashamed of who I am because there were so few positive disabled Latinx representations on TV. Hearing from my Latinx community that disabled Latinx don’t exist — or that there’s ‘no need’ for us to be shown — told me that my place as a Disabled Latina within Latinidad wasn’t welcomed.”

“Why are disabled actors ignored when it comes to roles like the Elephant Man?“: Asks The Guardian‘s Frances Ryan. See also: Ryan’s piece on the controversy regarding Netflix’s “Afflicted” series and Julie Rehmeyer’s Los Angeles Times essay on how Netflix is “televising prejudice against the chronically ill.”
“The BBC has been widely criticised over its decision to cast a non-disabled person in its remake of ‘The Elephant Man.’ The role of Joseph Merrick – who had severe physical deformities – will be played by the Stranger Things actor Charlie Heaton. Notably, actor Adam Pearson – who has neurofibromatosis type 1, a condition which was once thought to affect Merrick – has said he wasn’t even given the opportunity to audition. As Pearson told LBC, it’s part of a culture of exclusion for disabled actors. ‘It’s a systemic problem, not only in the BBC but industry-wide.’ From Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man to Eddie Redmayne in ‘The Theory of Everything,’ it’s routine for non-disabled actors to play disabled characters, often gaining critical acclaim in the process. At best, it takes work and exposure from talented disabled actors and further adds to an arts and culture that pushes disability representation – much like race, sex and class – to the sidelines. At worst, it sees non-disabled actors mimic the characteristics of a minority group without any involvement from the community it depicts.”

“‘A Quiet Place’ proves there’s no excuse for using non-disabled actors to play disabled characters“: According to The Independent‘s James Moore. See also: Variety‘s Joe Otterson reports that Maysoon Zayid, who has cerebral palsy, will write and star in “an autobiographical comedy series in development at ABC,” while CNN‘s Wayne Drash analyzes the outrage over the portrayal of epilepsy on Netflix’s “Seizure Boy.”
“The movie is set in a post-apocalyptic world haunted by blind monsters that zero in on sound with the aid of supersensitive hearing. Silence is thus a matter of survival. Because her family uses American Sign Language (ASL) they have an advantage: they can talk to each other in a world where speaking can get you killed. The script could have fallen down at this point by having Simmonds perform a functional role without much else to do other than move the plot along for the other actors, including A-lister Emily Blunt, to shine. But it has more ambition than that. Simmonds’ Regan Abbott is a fully formed character; a stroppy teen, chafing against her parents’ overprotectiveness and haunted by what she sees as her role in her little brother’s death. It’s not just her deafness that is central to the plot: she is. She’s neither an afterthought, nor is she an inspiration, which is another trap films involving disability fall into. She’s a person. She’s also the best thing about a film that is full of good things. Director John Krasinski, who pushed to cast her, has further revealed that she changed one of the signed parts of the scripts in an important way that makes it better.  In fact she elevates the whole project. As Kamran Mallick, the chief executive of Disability Rights UK, says, she brings ‘an extra dimension to the role which a hearing actor would not have been able to do.’”

“Toppling Structures of Inequality in the Documentary Field“: A great article published at IDA by Nicole Opper.
“New Day Films, a distribution co-op created by and for independent documentary filmmakers in 1971, has recently been grappling with what it means to be truly representative of the broad spectrum of filmmakers that exists, including filmmakers of color, working-class filmmakers, trans and gender non-binary filmmakers and those with disabilities—groups that have historically been underrepresented or poorly portrayed in the industry. At our Annual Meeting in upstate New York this past June, a panel was convened to discuss the findings of an Equity and Representation task force, and to open up the conversation to all member-owners of the co-op. ‘Very often in the documentary space, I’m the only person of color,’ remarked Michael Premo. Premo is the director of ‘Water Warriors,’ the story of a community’s successful fight to protect their water from the oil and natural gas industry. ‘This is also sort of dually equated with poverty, which is equally as racist as being the token black guy.’ Cheryl Green, the director of ‘Who Am I To Stop It’—a documentary about individuals with traumatic brain injuries—shared her perspective as a filmmaker with acquired disabilities herself: ‘There is no one disability community. What is a film about disability? What is a person with a disability? We’re not a monolith. There’s not one way to talk about it; there’s not one way to present it. The main way disability is represented is non-disabled people parachuting in and filming a medical story. Usually it’s one that starts off as ‘That’s gross or scary or painful! Phew! They got better.’”

“CinemAbility: The Art of Inclusion“: Scott Jordan Harris recommends Jenni Gold’s documentary in his RogerEbert.com review.
“‘CinemAbility’ is the most entertaining and comprehensive history of disability in American film and television ever made. In that sense it is the onscreen equivalent of Matthew F. Norden’s classic book Cinema Of Isolation: A History Of Physical Disability In The Movies, and Norden is prominent in the film’s opening scenes, explaining the early and generally disheartening history of Hollywood’s ideas about disability. Due prominence is given to Lon Chaney, an able-bodied actor notorious in the disabled community for making a career out of grotesque and exploitative parodies of disability. He often did so in partnership with director Tod Browning, who in 1932 made ‘Freaks’ with a cast of disabled actors. Norden uses ‘Freaks’ to make an important point about audience attitudes to disability then that is still relevant now: ‘Audiences couldn’t handle [‘Freaks’]. People supposedly went screaming down the aisles because what they were seeing on the screen were not able-bodied actors wearing tricky makeup … They were seeing authentic disabled people.’ But ‘CinemaAbility’ never feels like a lecture. It is structured like a conversation, with contributions from an array of industry heavyweights, including Marlee Matlin, Ben Affleck, Geena Davis, William H. Macy, Ben Lewin, Peter Bogdanovich and R.J. Mitte.”

TV Guide‘s Alyssa Andrews explains “how TV is still failing people with disabilities,” in graphic novel form.

Premo is the director of ‘Water Warriors,’ the story of a community's successful fight to protect their water from the oil and natural gas industry. We're not a monolith. There's not one way to talk about it; there's not one way to present it. The main way disability is represented is non-disabled people parachuting in and filming a medical story. Usually it’s one that starts off as ‘That's gross or scary or painful! Phew! They got better.’”
5.
"CinemAbility: The Art of Inclusion": Scott Jordan Harris recommends Jenni Gold's documentary in his RogerEbert.com review.
“‘CinemAbility’ is the most entertaining and comprehensive history of disability in American film and television ever made. In that sense it is the onscreen equivalent of Matthew F. Norden's classic book Cinema Of Isolation: A History Of Physical Disability In The Movies, and Norden is prominent in the film's opening scenes, explaining the early and generally disheartening history of Hollywood's ideas about disability. Norden uses ‘Freaks’ to make an important point about audience attitudes to disability then that is still relevant now: ‘Audiences couldn't handle [‘Freaks’]. People supposedly went screaming down the aisles because what they were seeing on the screen were not able-bodied actors wearing tricky makeup ... They were seeing authentic disabled people.’ But ‘CinemaAbility’ never feels like a lecture. It is structured like a conversation, with contributions from an array of industry heavyweights, including Marlee Matlin, Ben Affleck, Geena Davis, William H. Macy, Ben Lewin, Peter Bogdanovich and R.J. Mitte.”

The way to pass exams - Guidelines for passing an exam effectively
Never leave it right up until the final minute. Even while some students do look to thrive on last-minute cramming, it is extensively accepted that (for most of us) this can be not the best way to approach an examination. To assist sort out your time management, setup a timetable for your review. Compose down how many exams you may have as well as the days on which you will need to sit them. Then organize your examine accordingly.
Tumblr media
You may wish to give some exams much more research time than other people, so acquire a stability that you simply feel cozy with.
Make certain you've got adequate room to spread your textbooks and notes out. Have you received adequate light? Is your chair at ease? Are your pc video games from sight?
Attempt to do away with all distractions, and make sure you are feeling as relaxed and in a position to emphasis as you can. For some people, this may perhaps indicate virtually comprehensive silence, for other people, background music helps. Some of us desire almost everything wholly tidy and organized so as to concentrate, though other individuals thrive within a way more cluttered surroundings. Think about what performs for you personally, and consider the time to get it appropriate.
Visual aids might be truly useful when revising. In the start off of a subject, challenge oneself to write down all the things you presently know about a topic - after which highlight wherever the gaps lie. Closer on the examination, condense your revision notes into one-page diagrams. Having your thoughts down in this quick format can then help you to instantly recall everything you may need to know while in the exam.
one. Request the instructor So far as you are concerned, teachers quite possibly possess a single perform: to assist you pass your exams and both obtain a task or move on for the following stage of one's training. Teachers themselves see details just a little differently-don't neglect they really need to get countless college students by means of exams each and every year-but typically their aims are in tune with yours. Keep in mind that your instructor is simply not your opponent or your nemesis: she or he just isn't out to frustrate you or irritate you. But it may well seem to be with the time, teachers are often striving to aid you. Reap the benefits of that guide and you may hardly ever regret it. Request for assist each time you'll need it: which is what teachers are there for.
two. Beat the instructor Owning stated that, as you will have identified for by yourself, one can find lots of fine teachers and pretty a number of terrible ones. The vast majority of your teachers care passionately about how properly you do (even when they do not allow on) and one particular or two definitely could not care much less what takes place for you (primarily if you should never care greatly by yourself). The very first top rated tip I've isn't to depend on teachers to acquire you via your exams. Teachers can help you enormously, but eventually it can be your work and yours alone. The older and even more senior you will get, the far more you may discover that teachers and lecturers place the accountability of passing exams onto their college students. What does that involve in practice? The initial matter is usually to fully grasp the curriculum or syllabus you are learning and specifically what you are anticipated to understand about every topic. Request your instructor to provide you that has a copy of your curriculum you happen to be doing work to or appear it up for oneself around the Internet. (Note that distinctive examining bodies may well use somewhat totally different curricula, so make sure to discover the proper a single.) Armed with this particular material, you are going to not less than understand what you must know, even when you do not know it. Received me?
Cellphones abandoned by college students in advance of an examination
Photograph: After you happen to be during the examination, you happen to be in your own-without even your cellphone to assist you. Make sure that you happen to be ready. Photograph by Brien Aho courtesy of US Navy.
three. Appreciate the marking scheme Before you decide to go anyplace close to an examination, it can be vitally very important to know how the marks are allotted. You could discover that 75 % with the mark originates from the examination you sit in the finish in the academic 12 months, though the remainder is allotted by your instructor based upon coursework or tasks you do through the yr itself. It really is essential you fully understand the marking scheme, what ever it is actually, ideal on the begin. If 90 % of the mark originates from coursework so you do that poorly all 12 months, you cannot anticipate to conserve your self with the final minute which has a sudden fantastic examination functionality. Similarly, even though you have finished brilliant coursework, if it counts for only ten % of one's complete mark, you nonetheless desire a quality functionality inside the examination. In case you know exactly where your marks will come from, you are able to allocate your efforts accordingly.
four. System your revision A lot more than twenty many years right after I final sat an examination of any type, I even now obtain a recurring nightmare about not owning begun my revision in time! Chore however its, you are able to certainly not definitely shell out also extended revising. Teachers will inform you that it truly is normally less complicated to shell out a compact volume of time every day revising above an extended time period than to aim to cram in all of your revision the evening prior to your examination. But distinctive techniques job for diverse most people. Some individuals obtain concentrated revision fits them most effective. Some want to revise a single topic totally prior to proceeding with a second subject; other people desire to alternate revision involving various topics. When you end up being proficient at exams, make sure you discover a pattern that will work for you personally. A single very good tip will be to make revision a habit: deal with it like a work and make oneself revise amongst specified set instances with the day no matter whether you are feeling like it or not. No-one ever feels like revising, but when you will get right into a program the place you consistently commence and finish with the identical time, you are going to acquire it an entire whole lot less complicated. A second fine tip would be to intersperse your revision with soothing routines to cease your brain overloading. Go for walks, pay attention to music, hang out with buddies, perform sports-whatever you like- so long as you know the distinction in between break and distractions. Almost certainly give reading through books a miss until finally your revision is finished, but.
five. Prioritize weak topics Aim to revise anything but dedicate a lot more time for you to elements you do not fully understand or know much less very well. It sounds clear, but it can be remarkably tough to perform. Why? As a result of we like accomplishing simple things-so our tendency, whenever we revise, is usually to focus around the issues we presently know. In case you are not positive what your weaker topics are, request your instructor or take a look at the marks you have acquired on coursework by way of the 12 months. Prioritizing weak topics also goes back to comprehending the marking scheme. Let us suppose your examination consists of you creating 3 essays. More than likely they are going to carry equal marks. Even though you realize two topics off by heart and get fantastic marks, if you ever can not create a third essay you possibility dropping as much as a third in the marks. So weak topics could have a disproportionate impact in your complete mark, dragging your all round grade down substantially a lot more. Which is why you need to give weak topics most concentrate.
six. Be straightforward with on your own What exactly are you fine at and what exactly are you negative at? Possibly you suppose you are fine at almost everything, but you are going to nevertheless have weak factors you have to target on. And for those who consider you happen to be negative at every little thing, which is most likely not real both. Request your teachers to invest slightly time with you assisting you to know in which you might want to concentrate your efforts. Most typically they will be completely happy to oblige.
seven. Practice helps make best Closeup of quartz alarm clockface by Acctim
Photograph: Set oneself "mock" concerns underneath genuine time constraints.
Now, as teachers quite often inform you, exams are theoretically a means of testing your awareness as well as your comprehending and also the object of learning is always to obtain a very good training, to not pass exams. But exams count to get a whole lot plus a amazing deal of our training is geared particularly to assisting us to pass them. Like it or not, you are going to be sitting an terrible good deal of exams within your existence. It can make sense to practice exams like you'd practice a sport or maybe a musical instrument. Almost certainly your teachers will get you to test out genuine examination queries or previous examination papers. If not, get hold of individuals issues and papers on your own and check on your own below genuine examination circumstances. Are you able to certainly publish an outstanding essay within the leads to from the 1st globe war in 3 quarters of an hour? Check out it and see. Training examination issues and papers below time stress is among the preferred strategies to make improvements to your examination effectiveness. Never overlook that teachers are creatures of habit around any person else; examination papers are frequently set through the similar men and women from 1 12 months for the up coming so individual subjects will crop up again and again yet again.
eight. Use memory aids It could be really tough to recollect all of the items you'll want to know in an examination, so use memory aids when you should. No, I will not indicate compose the solutions in your arm! After you needed to recall the colours from the spectrum, you had been likely taught to utilize a memory help this kind of as "richard of york gave battle in vain" [red orange yellow green blue indigo violet]. You'll be able to get this thought a stage additional and memorize lists of stuff you ought to do not forget and even total programs for essays you could need to create. All it's important to do is get the preliminary letter of every matter you would like to try to remember and make up a sentence that aids you bear in mind the letters. It is possible to then do not forget so as half a dozen essays simply just by memorizing 6 basic sentences! I memorized dozens of essay programs by doing this when I was a pupil. The sole issue you need to be cautious about is you do really...
9. Response the query It really is potential to perform your revision so nicely you feel you recognize your topic within out, back to front, and every single which way. Which is brilliant! But just don't forget, inside the heat in the examination, you even now must be particular you reply each and every query correctly. When you memorize essays prepared to create them back in an examination, make certain the essay you publish may be the 1 the examiner desires to read-not the essay you simply come about to get revised. So get time for you to go through and know the inquiries to the examination paper. The way more senior you might be, the alot more very likely you will be to uncover that essay queries on examination papers are not thoroughly simple. You could possibly ought to read through in between the lines before you decide to comprehend "Oh yes, this really is really a query about x/y/z. They've described such-and-such, but what they are truly asking me about is so-and-so". Once more, training previous examination papers can help you to realize what you are staying asked and show your expertise inside the way the examiner is expecting.
ten. Try to remember why you happen to be learning Yes, you wish to pass your exams. But will not overlook that you are also attempting to find out and fully grasp issues and obtain a superior schooling. Attempt to not allow on your own turn into an exam-passing locomotive. In the end, even when you like pieces of paper with "A" printed on them, that is not the object with the exercising. For those who adore a topic and also you actually like understanding about this, that could be substantially extra rewarding from the finish. https://curiousthingdarkness.tumblr.com/post/176797579615/how-to-pass-exams-suggestions-for-passing-an

CLOA GLO #2: Explain how principles that define the cognitive level of analysis may be demonstrated in research (that is, theories and/or studies). (8)
INTRODUCTION This essay will give a detailed account of principles that define the cognitive level of analysis, including reasons or causes for demonstration of these principles in research
DEFINE Cognitive level of analysis
Based on how mental processes (e.g. perception, attention, language, memory, thinking) occur and how the brain processes information
Concerns stimuli taken in from the outside world, how we interpret it, and how we use this interpretation
Principles of CLOA drive focused research on behavior and cognition, and allow us to understand how they are linked
Cognition: processes based on one’s mental representations of the world (e.g. images, words, concepts)
Different individual experiences result in different mental representations of the world
Principles:
1. Humans are information processors, and mental processes can be scientifically investigated
The mind is complex, and mental processes can be modeled using an information-processing approach
Information from the outside world is received and encoded
We store and represent this information in different ways, and can manipulate it for use
We output information back into the world to be received by others
Computer analogy: input -> brain and mind (the “hardware”) -> thoughts/mental representations (the “software”) -> output
Mind selects and codes information; represents knowledge to itself while processing it and combining it w/ previously stored information
After organization, inferences made about information; both people and computers get info, transform it, and produce new info to spit out
***Schema theory
Introduced by Jean Piaget in 1926, who suggested that children learn using existing schema that are either accommodated (existing schema replaced) or assimilated (added to previous schema)
People actively process what they perceive, usually based on what they already know
Schemas are mental representations based on prior experiences that help us to understand, communicate about, and predict the world around us
Studies: Brewer & Treyens (1981), Darley & Gross (1983)
2. The mind and mental processes can and should be studied scientifically by developing theories and by using a variety of research methods
Even though mental processes cannot be directly observed like behavior can, theories can be developed and tested based on inferences
Multi-store model of memory, proposed by Atkinson & Shiffrin
Suggests there are 3 memory stores, each responsible for a different type of memory
Sensory memory: input is a sensory stimulus; decays over time; lasts 3-5 seconds
STM: converted from sensory store thru selective attention (choosing what bits to retain in memory); lost due to replacement of other memories (displacement); retained thru repetitive rehearsal; lasts 1-2 minutes and allow for ~7 +/- 2 items
LTM: encoded from STM store thru rehearsal; lost only if rehearsal is interfered during retrieval (interference); memory stored away indefinitely in a conceptually infinitely large store and retrieved to STM when needed
Studies: Glanzer & Cunitz (1966): Serial positioning effect
***Research methods like fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging)
Measures brain activity by detecting associated changes in concentration of oxygen in the blood; works b/c deoxygenated hemoglobin is more magnetic than oxygenated hemoglobin
Cons: patient has to keep still (bad if claustrophobic), uncomfortable for some patients (and impossible if one has metal implants), may be expensive
3D animated model, as opposed to MRI’s 3D image
Studies: Sharot et al. (2007)
3. Cognitive processes are influenced by social, cultural and biological factors
The cognitive process of memory is influenced heavily by schemas, which are in turn influenced by various social, cultural, and biological factors
Exposure to different societies and cultures results in exposure to different information, eventually creating different schemas
Some factors that affect: religion, cultural traditions, personal beliefs, morals; some acquired from authority figures/friends/etc.
Studies: Bartlett (1932), Cole & Scribner (1974)
Key Studies:
Brewer & Treyens (1981)
Darley & Gross (1983)
Glanzer & Cunitz (1966): Serial positioning effect
Sharot et al. (2007)
Bartlett (1932): War of the Ghosts Study
Cole & Scribner (1974)
Brewer & Treyens (1981)
Aim
To investigate how existing schemas impacted memory of the objects in an office
Background/Procedure
30 university students
Taken individually to wait in an office setting (containing a desk, typewriter, coffeepot, calendar, skull, wine bottle, picnic basket)
Left in room for 35 seconds before being taken to another room and being asked to write down what they could remember from the office
Findings
Participants mostly recalled items that would typically be found in an office
Did not recall wine and picnic basket
Conclusion
Participant schema of an office influenced memory of it
Mental process of memory being scientifically investigated; result is that people tend to interpret their environment based off of preconceived notions
Evaluation
Supports schema theory and reconstructive memory
Good control of variables to demonstrate cause & effect relationship
Not ecologically valid, and not really a task you’d do on a daily basis
Darley & Gross (1983): Laboratory experiment on schema processing in the social world
Aim
To investigate the influence of schemas regarding social factors (like socioeconomic status) with relation to how people are perceived
Background/Procedure
67 undergrads divided into two groups
Each group shown vid of a girl (named Hannah!) playing, either in a “rich” or “poor” environment
Both groups shown vid of girl taking an intelligence test and asked to rate her performance
Findings
“Rich” group participants rated her performance as above average, while “poor” group participants rated her performance as below average, despite ambiguity of the video
Conclusion
Demonstrates that pre-formed schemas of what being “rich” or “poor” connote influence how Hannah’s future is perceived
Participants readily processing the small amount of details given in order to form an impression, although interpretation may not be correct
Evaluation
Supports schema theory and demonstrates how schemas can lead to stereotypical thinking
Good control of variables, replicable, and established cause-effect
Behavior can be explained AND predicted
Not ecologically valid, small sample size (and convenient sampling at that)
Glanzer & Cunitz (1966): Serial positioning effect
Aim
To investigate the primacy and recency effects
Background/Procedure
Asked to read a series of 20 words, and then to recall them in any order
Variation: distraction task b4 recall
Findings
Participants remembered first and last words best
Results created “serial position curve” illustrating this
Conclusion
Primacy effect b/c more time to rehearse words, and to encode into LTM
Recency effect b/c still in the STM store
When distraction task added, recency effect dissipated (last few words lost b/c decayed)
Evaluation
Supports multi-store model of memory
Low in ecological validity
Did not test participant comprehension of words
Not generalizable b/c emic (one culture tested)
Sharot et al. 2007
Flashbulb memory studied with fMRI
Location of LTM retrieval (parahippocampal gyrus) mysteriously inactive when recalling 9/11 as opposed to summer holiday
Found that amygdala played a role in processing memory linked to emotional reactions
Bartlett (1932): War of the Ghosts Study
Culture impacts schema of a story; memory (cognitive process) of story dependent on cultural schema regarding storytelling, language, etc.
Cole & Scribner (1974)
Variations in memory between American and Kpelle schoolchildren and Kpelle children not in school
Memory (cognitive process) universal, but schemas that organize information for memory not universal
CONCLUSION
Three fundamental principles that define the CLOA, and help research into cognition
Views from all levels of analysis important in determining cumulative influences on human behavior
