My thoughts on Ninjago the Island!!! 🏝🏝🏝

So, gotta be honest... this is not a Blind reaction thing, I actually watched it in French first so I know most of the stuff already 😅 It's entertaining, it got great animation, but nothing more than that in my opinion 🤷‍♀️

Still there is stuff I liked or I want to point out, and finally I'm seeing the English version so I can actually understand what the HECK they are saying 🤩

Is it just me or it feels like the writing of this special was made by someone different from the one of season 13? Like, it's not bad, just less engaging and witty. For now. Maybe I'm being premature 🤷‍♀️

So when I first watched this I was genuinely, really excited about knowing the truth behind all this. It turned out very different from what I first thought, but at least in this case it's okay (besides I was pushing with the lightning meaning just to see Libber again 😅😅😅)

FINAL THOUGHTS

There are a few little details that bothered me a little, and it wasn't as exciting as I maybe hoped it was going to be, but it was fine. Enjoyable still. These characters make me like the show, even when it got nothing too impactful 🤷‍♀️

But I got triggered about that lightning thing with Jay 😅 I guess I'll just fanfic whatever I had in mind...

The writing was really less engaging, a little normal in a way? Idk just a feeling. Nice to see Ronin again though, I really like him. And nice to see Jay freaking out, I really like that too 😂

To be honest I wanted to put down my thoughts on this one because I REALLY wanna do the same with Nya's season 🤩🤩 I already know that Maya is gonna be there and I am so HAPPY already!!! 💙💙💙

Alright, so in the middle of this S12 chaos (because no doubt that there’s more to come tomorrow), I actually saw Tournament of Elements for the first time. And I...think I might be falling on the unpopular side here. 

I mean, it’s not terrible at all, in fact I think it’s alright, but I don’t think it has much flavour. Or at least, not the flavour that made Ninjago appeal to me. Let’s just go over points.

-This season has an upside; moreso than any old season thus far, there’s more MVPs amongst the main ninja. Zane is great throughout when we see him, Cole gets a surprisingly focused sub-plot, and Jay pulls his weight in the early part of the season immensely. They gets lots of moments to shine and provide some brevity that I appreciated. -That does mean however that I think Kai and Lloyd suffer for the tone shift. Lloyd especially is so boring this season, a far cry from the first two seasons where he was doing a lot of the legwork. Kai has a flash or two, but otherwise he’s either in serious mode or “annoying fallen for someone on sight” mode. He actually came off rather skeevy at some times too, The idea of the green ninja jealousy is done...well, it manages to conceptualise why this may be a thing after what S1 and S2 established (thoughts resurfacing in a bout of depression), but it feels like the execution is undercooked...which will be a theme. -Nya’s got a pretty strong arc, so that’s appreciated. You can definitely tell this season is setting up for her to be the water ninja, there’s just so many signs, but at least her character was active without that slant to it. That being said, the whole Samurai X thing is kinda abandoned this season, isn’t it? -Speaking of abandoned plots, that love triangle was done with way quicker than I was expecting. You get a couple of episodes where it gets to flare up, resolve it in the third, and then that’s it. Can’t say I hate that being undercooked, it was terrible. I guess the writers came to that conclusion too, because Cole was back to feeling like pre-Codename Arcturus (aka only doing it to spite Jay, not having interest in Nya).  -Also speaking of undercooked...there’s Skylor. I can’t really come to hate her but that’s because she’s just such a bland character. She really is the generic action girl (something levied at Nya a lot even though I’ve never really seen it) and is mostly defined by either her romance to Kai (said romance being as hokey and cliche as it sounded, so the best romance of the season was still Zane and Pixal), or her literal relation to Chen. But I certainly won’t complain about her being manipulative and that because...you know...that was her job prior to her turn.  -This can apply to almost all the Elemental Masters, who get small moments to show their stuff but otherwise are just more characters to add to the pile. The only ones who significantly stood out for me were Karlof, Neuro and Shade, and out of those only Karlof was for entertainment value. He does also demonstrate the power of character writing though; at no point was I distracted by him sharing the same face as Okino, the mannerisms and expression work was just so different between them. -Dareth I’m mixed on. He seems more like dead weight by the end of the season, but he had some good moments at the start, especially his surprising ingenuity with the Kabuki disguise for Nya. -Likewise, even Sensei Garmadon, Wu and Misako feel like they didn’t have much. Sensei Garmadon started strong, but then was kind of reduced to exposition (although he did end on a high note). Meanwhile Wu and Misako felt extraneous even though the final plot point hinges on their relationships. What? -Pythor, in some twist of fate, comes in with a fairly last minute play to be near the top of the character chain. He was back on S1 form, and it was good to see him in good form again. -I liked Chen. With the Overlord acting as such a stoic villain for the most part, it was refreshing having someone as comedic as Chen in the villain helm, while still being plenty vicious and capable of villainy. Clouse I should theoretically like, but again, he was way stoic. -It was also nice to see the cameos -If you like lore, there’s plenty of lore here (there’s even like an episode that’s basically that). It’s interesting to see, but wasn’t great for the flow of the story.  -Pacing really killed this season for me, but for the opposite reason of the other seasons; it ended up going too slow. Like, after episode five, it really started to drag on me. 

So overall, S4 for me is a season that has an interesting overall premise, and really sells that at the start, but loses steam before it gets to the end. Not helping is the fact a lot of the characters and many sub-plots feel like they’re underdeveloped, possibly being a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth. This is the real start of the lore building so hopefully that pays off in interesting ways. 

I guess I just don’t hold the same values in a series as other fans because I’d rather have the more light-hearted stuff with more serious bits sprinkled in than the rabbit hole the old stuff seems to be diving in to of taking itself way more seriously and caring more about the lore. 

That being said, I’d still say it’s better than S3, that season just went up and down and it wasn’t cohesive aside from Zane’s plot. This one feels more thought out, but just isn’t for me. 

Next up in terms  of watching the show is Possession, which was very, very heavily foreshadowed at the end of S4. I know it also takes the dive into being more serious, but it’s also a lot lower on the characters in the plot so maybe it’ll have more time to play about with its ideas.

But more immediately next up is more modern Ninjago chaos, and I am way down for that!

Heart of the Oni

After the supposed deaths of their friends and family, Nya, Lloyd, Pixal, and Misako cope with the aftermath of Harumi’s rein and try to move on with the help of some old friends. But not everyone grieves the same way. Meanwhile in the First Realm, the ninja are trying to survive and find a way home. Post S8, this started out as a speculative fiction about S9 but its so much more.

CHAPTER 4

Cole went to close off the entrance to cave.  For lack of any better options, he had spent the better part of their last hour of sunlight blasting a cavity into the side of one of the rock formations. It wasn’t pretty, but it would hopefully keep them safe for the night.

              “Don’t close it off, boulder brain!  How the heck are we supposed to breath?” Jay complained, stopping his friend.

              “Like this” It was Kai who answered him, using his fire to blast a smaller hole near the top of the cave and out into the night air.

              Jay looked at the hole and then back at Cole, who shrugged and closed off the opening.  Soon they were huddled together in the cramped, dark space.  The only light was weak and blue, emanating from Zane.

              “Oh…I wish we had a fire or something.  I hate cramped spaces…” Jay complained, wrapping his arms around his knees.   Kai lit up his hand in reply.

              “But I can’t do this all night.  Too bad there aren’t more plants around or we could have a real fire.”

              “Oh…I can think of a few things to burn…” Jay replied, eyeing Wu and his little stick of pain. Wu caught his glare and hid behind Cole, poking his head out and waving his stick.

              “Bad Jay…bad bad Jay!”

              “Would you guys cut it out?” Cole asked, exasperated.  He was exhausted after the last hour and didn’t feel like listening to fighting all night. He pulled Wu into his lap, trying to calm him down.

              “Sorry…Mom.” Jay muttered.  Cole rolled his eyes.  Silence ensued for a few more moments.  As usual, Jay broke it.

              “Wait…do you think our parents know what happened to us? Or Lloyd…or Nya??”

              The other Ninja looked up.  Zane frowned in concentration.

              “It’s hard to say whether anyone witnessed the Colossi destroy our ship, or if anyone witnessed us escaping off of it.  With no witnesses our friends may have just uncovered the destroyed bounty.  But perhaps they will think that we escaped.”

              “No chance.” Cole cut in. “Garmadon and Harumi will tell everyone we’re dead.  It’s the best way to ensure fear in the populace.  And we aren’t exactly around to prove them wrong.”

              “Great.  So now everyone thinks we died.” Kai punched the wall in frustration.  “We don’t even know if everyone else made it out ok. Last we saw Lloyd was stuck on that tram with Harumi.”

              “Oh my gosh!  What if Lloyd saw us? Maybe he saw us use the traveler’s tea…” Jay cut in.

              “By my calculations, the angle that Lloyd would be watching from would more likely give off the impression that we were crushed by the colossi.”

              “Uhhhgh, then everyone really does think we’re dead.”  Jay leaned back on the wall, and then sat back up. “My parents!  This is going to kill them!”

              Kai groaned and put his head in his hands. “I’m such an idiot.  The last thing I said to my sister was that Ninja don’t last forever.  I just hope that she can pull through this.  She’s never lost anyone when I’m not around to help her…”

              “Nya!  This is gonna kill her too!” Jay agreed, seeming to get more panicked by the minute. Then after a moment: “Who do you think she will miss more?”

              Zane smacked him across the back of the head.

              “OooOW! OKAY…maybe not the most sensitive question…”

But Zane wasn’t listening, already lost in his own thoughts.  

              “P.I.X.A.L and I were just reunited…and now we have been separated all over again.  I wonder what she will think of all of this.”

              Jay patted his back. “I’m sure your robot girlfriend will be fine.”  Zane just shook his head.  

              “I am afraid she will blame herself.  She wasn’t fighting the Collosi anymore when we were taken or she would have been there to help.  She must have gone to assist Lloyd or the others.”

              “Speaking of just being reunited…we just found our parents.  At the moment they’re off in who knows where.  I wonder when they will even know I’m missing…” Kai added.

              “I wonder if Cliff Gordon misses me.” Jay said wistfully.

              “Who?” Kai asked, confused.

              “They guy who plays Fritz Donnagon!”

              “And why would that guy miss you Jay?”

              Once again, Jay went a shade of red. “Because…because I’m his biggest fan, of course.” he finished lamely.  Kai shook his head.

              “I doubt he even knows you were ever born Jay, let alone that that you’re dead.”

              “You’d be surprised…” Jay muttered to himself.  

Only Cole wasn’t joining in on the conversation.  He just seemed to be staring off into space, inadvertently pulling Wu closer to him.  The toddler had fallen asleep and was snoring softly.

              “Cole? Are you alright?” Zane asked, pulling his friend from his thoughts.  

              “Huh? Me? Yeah, I’m fine” Cole said, trying to pull off a lighthearted laugh.  

              “It’s ok if you’re worried about your father, Cole.” Zane said kindly. Cole’s fists seemed to clench on their own.

              “Nah…no need to worry about him.  As long as Garmadon hasn’t shut down his performing group I’m sure he will be just fine.” he said.  He shifted Wu’s position in his arms.

              “I’m sure that…”

              “I said I’m fine.” Cole said again, in a tone that let Zane know that he was done talking about it.  The other ninja made eye contact, eyebrows raised.   It appeared they had encroached on a sensitive topic.  The truth was, Cole wasn’t even sure his father was mourning his loss.  He figured he should feel better knowing that his father wouldn’t be sad or angry or distraught…but somehow the thought of him continuing on with his life just as he always had made Cole feel very alone.   He had seen it before, when his mother had died.  Wu had said that singing and dancing was just Lou’s way of dealing with grief, but to Cole it felt like it was his father’s way of dealing with everything.  

All that would come of my loss will be a new hit single.

Cole thought bitterly. As the silence after Cole’s snap stretched longer, it seemed like a good time for the Ninja to try to get some sleep.

              Ronin stared up at the sign in front of the junkyard. Usually it was lit up with blinking neon…but the sign had been dark for the last couple of days.  He sighed and willed himself to approach the little trailer in the junkyard’s center.   He really hadn’t wanted to take this one, but Nya seemed more adamant against doing it than he did.  Something about a dinner date that she and Jay had never got to have with them, or something.  And now they never would.

              After he knocked, he could hear a little scuffling inside.  

              “Oh, Ed…do you suppose that’s him?  Maybe he escaped after all and has come home.”

              “Now, Edna…I told you not to get your hopes up.” But the hope in his own voice betrayed Ed’s true feelings.  The door swung open, and Ronin tried not to cringe at the crushing disappointment in the eyes of the junkyard owners.

              “Ah… Mr. Ronin…what an unexpected…er..surprise…” Ed said, trying his best to still be polite.  

              “Look, I didn’t mean to intrude on your afternoon…but I needed to share some information with you. Can I come in?” He winced inwardly as the hope seemed to light back in their eyes.  He had expected to find the couple mourning the loss of their only son. Instead, he found them clinging onto a hope that he was still out there…and he decided that the latter was harder to watch.  

              “You’re in luck, Mr. Ronin.  I just finished up another one of my famous crumb cakes.” Edna said as he took a seat on their couch.

              “Ah…thanks Mrs. Walker.   But I don’t mean to…”

              “Is our son alright Mr. Ronin? That’s why you came…right?  Because it’s too gosh darn dangerous for him to make his way to the junkyard on his own. That would be too obvious…”

              How the heck am I supposed to do this? Ronin thought.  I signed up to tell them about a funeral, not break it to them that Jay really is dead.  Better to just rip it off…like a bandage.

              “Actually, Mr. Walker, I came to invite you to the funeral.”

              The home fell into immediate silence, which was broken by the crashing sound of a plate of crumb cake hitting the ground.

              Ok…maybe that wasn’t the best course of action after all.

              “What I mean is…we wanted to do something to commemorate the loss of the Ninja…you know…”

              “But Mr. Ronin, our Jay is not lost” Edna cut in, her voice chillier than normal.   “Just because no one has seen him and because Lord Garmadon says he is dead….well, gee willikers, that don’t mean nothing to us.”

              “Now…Edna…” Ed’s voice was suddenly heavier.  He actually was getting on in years, Ronin realized.  He was always so perky and cheerful that it was hard to remember.  But in moments like this it was easy to see the years weighing down on him.

              “It’s tonight.  I know it’s not much notice, but we don’t really have the luxury of drawn out party plans.” He said, standing.  He had to get out of here…Edna had come behind her husband and they were holding hands.  No doubt that tears were en route, and Ronin and seen enough of those recently to last him a lifetime.  

              “The place to meet.” He finished, handing them a card. “I’m sure I don’t have to tell you…we need you to be as discreet as possible.”  And with that, the thief hurried from the Walker’s home.

The ending and Epilogue of Ninjago (headcanons)

I was inspired to give you all my completely unsolicited ninjago endgame headcanons so here we go

I‘m usually a sappy HEA guy for canon stories, but I also love me some more dramatic or bittersweet endings, at least in fanon, which is how most of this happened.

As I said, Jay trains the new generation of ninja, because I feel his personality is the most similar to Wu. Though I could also see it being Kai tbh.

Why not Lloyd, you may ask? Because honestly as much as they‘ve called him the new sensei etc. it just doesn’t feel like his character. Lloyd is a team leader and a hero, not a teacher, and ultimately I think that’s how he‘ll go out. One last run as the green (or even golden) ninja to save ninjago, and then he takes the first spinjutzu master up on his offer and joins him in whatever afterlife there is and reunites with Wu, Garmadon and Misako there (who will all obviously be dead at this point).

Throughout his life he will keep running into his father, and they’ll have the kind of ambiguous relationship they had in season 1 and against the oni. Garmadon will be at peace with who he is now and Lloyd will accept it too. At the end Garmadon dies to save his son once again, saying he may not be able to “feel“ love, but he can still do the right thing.

Wu and Misako die peacefully of old age. (They don’t get together though cuz I‘m not a fan of that subplot, in my mind the love triangle doesn’t exist)

Back to Jay. While I am 100% sure that in canon they’ll get Nya back somehow, in this headcanon they don’t. Jay goes off to be a reckless adventurer for a while, probably faces off against nadakhan again, or even teams up with him in hopes of getting her back, but nothing works. Kai joins him for some of the adventures, being just as ridden with grief, but ultimately he moves on first and jay is alone again. He loses an eye on his travels and gets a permanent eyepatch. Eventually, at his most desperate moment he finds her again. Well not really her, but he connects with the ocean, he feels Nya within it, and feels her love for him. He notices that, even though things are different now, they are not worse. Their love still exists. He finally accepts that Nya is not truly gone, that she never was, but he still doesn’t feel ready to return home. From Nya and the ocean he learns to be more in tune with his own element. He visits the temple of the nunchucks of lightning again where he learns a new technique that lets him maintain his true potential and “become part of the storm“. As a result of this, there is now a permanent orb of lightning where his lost eye used to be, which he still hides behind the patch. His storm state is described as terrifying by onlookers, but he himself describes it as freeing, even meditative and “simply nature“.

Eventually he returns home to the others, his sense of humor returns, and though Zane notes there is something different about him, his personality hasn’t really changed and he’s still his old fun and video game loving self.

He maintains his connection with the ocean throughout his life, and one day a child is swept ashore that he takes in as his own. Either that child will be a master of water, or they will eventually inherit Jay’s power.

Jay doesn’t die in a normal way. When he feels he is ready to go and has passed on everything he knows, he is taken by the storm, becomes one with nature, and is finally reunited with his lover, the sea. He’s also able to appear to his pupils and his child in like a mufasa kind of way sometimes to give them advice.

As I said before, Zane (maybe with Pixal) gives up fighting and his powers and becomes the chronologist. He collects every story and piece of information about Ninjago, its people and history, and specifically the ninja themselves, making sure nobody will ever forget his friends, their legacy, and what they sacrificed for Ninjago. He sees times changing, people and nations come and go, centuries of different cultures. He sees technology and advancement rising, then collapsing again, and yet life goes on and starts anew. He learns, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Heroes and villains in an endless struggle for power… light and darkness, there must always be a balance, he understands that now. That’s why he doesn’t interfere anymore. Eons later he is still alive and regarded as a legendary figure. It’s not a sad or lonely existence to him, because as a robot he retains a perfect memory of everything he wishes to remember. To him, his friends and family are never really gone.

I‘m not sure about Cole and Kai yet, but lmk if you’re interested in hearing more.

Ninjago headcanon:

Zane goes to all of the ninjas funerals. By Skylor and Misago's funerals, he realizes that Wu can't teach the next generation of ninja.

But he can.

He teaches and recruits. He teaches Cole's determination, he teaches Kai's passion. He teaches Jay's ability to bring laughter into a dire situation. He teaches Nya's love for her team. He teaches Lloyd's empathy and leadership.

The ninja pass away, but their legacy lives on.

Thoughts journal about Season 13!! 💪💪 (1/4)

Phew, I actually made it to the English release without spoilers! 🤩 I do know general things about little plots for the ninja, hopefully nothing major! Finally, the Cole season we've all been waiting for, with Rock Mom and possibly plenty of our Earth baby development! COLE IN THE SPOTLIGHT AT LAST!! 🖤🖤

Well, I know I'll be shooting rainbows from my eyeballs if I see even one Nexo Knights reference! For the rest I don't really know what will happen, I'm curious! 🤔

It's the 6th of July, and here we go!!

GENERAL THOUGHTS

Is it just me or the dialogues sounds better? More built up, funnier, cohesive just like in the earliest seasons of Ninjago? Maybe it's just me but I'm really appreciating 🤷‍♀️

It also doesn't feel that rushed anymore! Which was my biggest problem in Prime Empire really. The episodes seem to me like fragments of a nice movie, not a too long story forced into 11 minutes. I'm very happy with the quality so far, I feel good about this for now! 👍

No matter what season it is, you can count on The Fold to make an AMAZING intro!! Freaking awesome, it was epic and very final battle like 👌👌 I WANT THE FULL VERSION ASAP!!!

I do appreciate we are not forgetting about the adventures we had until now, it feels like from season 11 forward we are building a new backstory of. But they still show stuff from the very first seasons so I'm happy anyway 😍

Pff, Cole plays Prime Empire right after being trapped in it. And Lloyd joins in! YES!! Maybe there is hope for a season without greenie being traumatized! 👍👍

Is it me being a "I've rewatched this show way too much" type of fan to feel that Nya saying that Jay using Spinjitzu for chores will get Wu mad might be a reference to how the guys had cleaned the very first Destiny Bounty with that? You think that Wu found out and got crazy mad? That would be kinda cool 😂😂

Okay, poor sensei and all, but he's kinda right 😅 I like Wu, I really do, but Aspheera was a problem kinda because of him, they all going to another dangerous realm could have been dealt a lot better if he hadn't been so on edge and in Prime Empire he freaking got kidnapped by NORMAL PEOPLE. Maybe he is getting old 🤷‍♀️

References to Hiroshi's Labyrinth and the Tournament of Elements, my fangirl heart is happy 😍 Is it too much thinking that the maze was a reference to Shadow of Ronin, since they all went there in the game while in the show only Lloyd was at the Labyrinth? Idk 🤷‍♀️
