Brilliant!!

A few years ago, @confettininjabean bought me a copy of Sunless Seas as a Christmas present, but I'm a weenie when it comes to roughlikes and my OCs dying, so it took me until last week to start playing it. I figured I'd give it fifteen minutes and maybe my first captain death before I moved on to another game... and I'm on my fourth captain now

Since Sunless Seas is a Fallen London spinoff, I was somewhat familiar with the world already, but it had been long enough since I'd last played there was a lot of surprises/relearning, mostly just me getting jumpscared by the Lovecraftian atmosphere (a lot of which is the casual amount of cannibalism present). Sometime during the second captain's run I was like "fuck this, this is too stressful" and installed a mod that mitigated the frankly ridiculous micromanaging of food and fuel.

And none of this will make much sense to anyone who hasn't played this game, but still, let me present to you, my legacy of Steampunky captains, who have been furiously passing charts to each other right before their deaths mostly so I don't have to reopen the gd map every single time, as they have captured my attention this past week or so:

Captain #1 - Renley:

I think I subconsciously named him after "Renfield" in Dracula. In retrospect, this was probably a mistake. Renley was an excommunicated priest who's daddy was a zeecaptain who mysteriously died on the dark waters, and he went to zee to try and find his papa's bones. He started an affair with his surgeon at the first opportunity, and I never did find out why he got kicked out of the priesthood as he descended to cannibalism and ran out of food a few miles from shore. He died as forgotten as his daddy's bones, except for his apparent pen pal...

Captain #2 - Farris:

Bisexual disaster with a heart of gold. Grew up a street urchin, but apparently got too tall and was cast out from her crew, so she bought a ship with what she got from her last big score, determined to make enough as a zeecaptain to retire rich and comfortable. She insists everyone call her "my lady", not because she's actual nobility but more because one day she's sure she will be.

I fully expected her to go the Renley route and die very quickly, but she surprised me by like... making good decisions?? She somehow just barely survived to the end of my first night of playing, making several successful runs into the zee without me cheating. She accepted a deal for more food and fuel from a very shady individual before I logged off for the evening, but it wouldn't be enough for us to continue on. As I had grown a little fond of her scrappy ways, I installed the first mod so we didn't have to worry about her going full Renley. SHE THRIVED.

She opened up so much of the map, also struck up an affair with the surgeon on her ship (look, it gets lonely and scary on the zee), but then... actually fell in love with a sweetheart back in London on one of her return trips. A dapper, fancy fellow who gave her a locket, and just so happened to keep meeting her at the docks whenever she arrived back home. Slowly she started to accumulate enough funds that she was able to purchase a townhome--

--and then she accidentally sailed off the north side of the map, nearly died of terror at the North Pole, which somehow summoned evil Santa Clause to her residence who made her go zip all around the unterzee delivering, uh, something evil Santa Clause considered to be presents (I guess), which culminated in her using her blood to create a little child made of snow, which apparently evil Santa Clause immediately abandoned so Farris decides this is her kid now, because growing up a little street urchin she knows the feeling of abandonment, names him Boreas, and takes him back to London. But uh. He's made of snow. So he starts to melt.

And this damn game is so unforgiving, it gives you conflicting pieces of information, so by the time I realized I needed to sail south to a relatively close port to London (instead of all the way across the gd map like it led me to believe), this poor kid was melting in earnest, and Farris goes to talk to a devil, who's like "you can stop this child from melting and dying if you have xyz items". And I had xy items, but I had unknowingly sold off "z" component to free up room in my cargo hold. And "z" component is not a readily abundant resource, so I look this up on Google at some point, as the kid is like "LOOK MA, I'm getting shorter! :D" and leaving puddles across the deck. And there's supposed to be an island around here somewhere where I can just go get the two quantities of this resource I need to stop my icy boy from melting. Except the map is randomized, and nowhere I go can I find this gd island. Farris basically spends like 3-4 months of time in-game just sailing the open zees, her terror rising as she desperately tries to find some way to save this kid. And there's some point where I know there's not enough time to make it, and yet she can't give up...

...and eventually, somewhere in the south zee, while she's still trying to find this stupid island, she gets summoned to Boreas's side to hold his hand as he finishes melting away. And at this point, Farris is pretty done, and just sort of numbly goes about her business, ferrying around the zees. I think she returns to port one last time and seriously looks around her townhouse, considers retiring, but writes a will just in case, sees her dapper chap again, before setting off one last run. And she's sailing down the southern portion of the map, looking around one last time for that goddamn island because it's personal now, when the ship is set upon by what amounts to a swarm of super bats that have 400 health to her ship's 30 health. She desperately tries getting away, but in the end, the bat's sink her ship, and poor Farris, who paused her quest for wealth on a doomed mission to save a dying child, sinks to the bottom of the zee. And never sees her dapper chap again.

Captain #3 - Vestry:

A certifiable dumbass. No, seriously.

I'm a little numb at this point, and still mourning Farris, who I got way too attached to. Vestry is a natural philosopher who came to the the Neath, because she was just too edgy for the surface world. Her ambition was to become the London's greatest explorer, and so sailed literally everywhere without any consideration for anything. At this point I broke down and was like "fuck it", installed a second mod so I could have money and not scrape by constantly. Caused a few international incidents, created a few spy networks. She was constantly pushing her engines, which meant they kept exploding at the worst opportunity, and at one point had to limp across the entire map with a single crew member at a snail's pace. Somehow this did not scare off anyone she paid to fill back out the ranks of her crew. She did manage to open up a large portion of the map, and then saw the absolute most southern point of the world with foreboding menacing statues trying to warn her away and was like "ALL POWER TO THE ENGINES" and sailed off the map. Everything exploded and she died as she lived -- a dumbass to the end.

Captain #4 - Valeria:

Started off like Vestry with the same past and ambition, but quickly decided "you know what? Nah, I've got this map almost opened up, I'm going to settle a colony in this tiny patch of sunlight instead". She is still slowly growing her army, ferrying sailors across the sea by the dozens. I am terrified she's going to get her ship sunk by monsters and make me start over again, but she's managed to hold her own so far. If the game actually ends after she achieves her ambition and retires, she might be my last captain, because I don't think I have it in me again to open up this map after how long it's taken to get it this complete. Also, Valeria finally found that stupid goddamn island that tripped Farris up, so if evil Santa Clause rears his head again, we'll be able to save her baby boy this time around.

Anyway, all of this to say, Farris is somehow still living in my head rent-free, despite dying nearly a week ago. Since there are no actual character portraits in Sunless Sea, I decided to honor her by creating an approximation of what she could have looked like in a 3D program I'm trying to learn, posed and rendered her out, and then with a little photoshoppery and paintover in CSP have immortalized her in pixels:

Chapter 1

She was perched on the rooftop like a bird would perch if birds perched on this particular rooftop. Except they didn`t. Birds avoided this particular rooftop because they knew she perched there. It was almost out of respect for her two leggedness of perching.

She stared into the street before a crowd of people had begun to form. Soon there would be too many. And so, she betook herself off from perching to sliding down the roof and then to the gutter and then to falling off. She had to fall just right and so she waited.

Two nights previously the Abegaineo Family had sat down to have a conference. It was to discuss who, if anyone wanted the job would become head of the family.

 It was an annual discussion, that generally ended up with a vacant chair. 

Mostly it was an opportunity to come together to discuss what had happend during the past year and have a rather nice party. Introductions for marriage were also discussed where necessary for family continuity was paramount. Each branch carefully chosen. But bloodlines always from outside the family. No one who was not family could attend. And this meant no one who was not family usually had no clue they were under discussion.

If rejected then the rejected one would never see or hear from his or her potential mate every again. There were rules in place for a reason. 

Everyone took the name Abegaineo once chosen. No one ever left the family. Death was the only exit, but at this point even Death knew better than to take any within their ranks. 

They all just took up positions “Elsewhere” it was just how it worked. 

Those who had known when the chair had been filled had long since gone “elsewhere”. No one was here who remembered at this particular gathering. 

There was light music coming from the ballroom. It had a slightly eerie edge as though something was a little off kilter. Listen too long and it could set your teeth on edge. Listen longer and the need to start a fight grew. After that it was too late and usually involved rubber rooms. 

Chapter 2 

Two days later and outside, the percher was close to falling. And so she did. The person who caught her however, was not who she was expecting to catch her.

One step back and two streets over the intended catcher walked on oblivious. She had been redirected by a series of events that did not seem contrived, but in fact were. 

The recipient of the falling girl was surprised and not delighted. He had been carrying a painting at arms length so as not to bend or break it. So his arms had been extended in the correct position for falling into.  The girl did not yet know it was the wrong person. 

The painting fell out of his hands at the exact moment she hit. And a bunch of expletives followed after. The girls pride was a little hurt. The mans anger and concern for the painting over the person, put her back up. She stood up quickly enough and was about to lay into him when she really noticed his eyes, and then his hands which once again were holding the painting. 

“She apologised. She actually apologised” 

Across the street hidden in shadow Hecate stood talking to her companion, a sparrow. The bird perched on Hecate`s shoulder. “But it was the wrong one” he shrilled. “Where has Nona got to?Nona was supposed to catch her! This took bloody weeks to set up  and it`s all but banjaxed, I`m going to check up on Nona” and the sparrow flew off. 

Nona had wandered into a Cafe she sat looking out at the people walking past as she sipped her coffee. they all had the same bored expression. “Ruddy Robots”. She sighed and got up after finishing and continued down the street. 

A sparrow flew past her head and hit a window, it fell to the ground. 

Nona had not seen it. She was walking without really paying attention the projects in her head were outweighing the noises surround her, the people were a blur. 

A sparrow flew right past her and it a window, it fell to the ground.

She did not see it. 

The third time it happened and Nona ignored it the sparrow flew off muttering.

“Did you just say `for fucks sake?`” 

The sparrow came back round and hit a window right in front of her face, and landed on the ground at her feet. She nearly trod on it but instead bent down to pick it up. “Bloody suicidal birds.” she placed it gently on a table. It fluttered its wings pathetically. “Good God you want me to take you home?” Flutter “Ah what the heck. People think I`m nuts anyway” and she picked the sparrow up. “Better find you a box or something.” 

She rooted around in an recycling bin and found an empty box and put the sparrow inside. She continued to root around inside the bin. She found a bit of wood, some bubble wrap and an orange that was close to going mouldy and there was a painting just thrown to one side. The picture intrigued her and the rest she could find a use for.  She carried it all along till she found a spare poly bag floating down the street, then placed most of the items into the bag. 

The box with the sparrow in contained it and the bubble wrap, but no air holes. The sparrow was comfy but pissed off at the lack of air. 

Nona finally made it back to her flat/studio. she opened the box. The sparrow fluttered weakly. “I bet you need water” she said. The sparrow was thinking it could do with a gin sling right about now.

Nona found a pipette. The sparrow was really hopeful when it saw the clear liquid and nearly choked when water went past its beak. 

Chapter 3

Meanwhile Hecate was watching her main charge walk along with the man with the painting still held at arms length. 

Arabat-Lile,better known as Lily, kept pace with the man and his painting. Still apologising, it fell on deaf ears. This man was a nightmare. He tripped over stuff and nearly fell, he bumped into people and got banged a lot. It was only because Lily steered him, that he made it to his destination. A museum. He almost tripped up the stairs but made it inside and down to the store room where he gingerly placed the painting on the floor against a wall. 

He looked around and finally noticed Lily, and almost jumped out of his skin, falling backward. He might at that point, have crushed the painting, but Lily grabbed his arm and pulled him forward, so he fell into her. Once again their eyes met. She saw a flash of light, literally a flash, then it vanished. He saw her face and realised it was symmetrical. Both said “Wow” 

Hecate still hiding in the shadows just said “shit” it was very deep. 

Hecate needed information and quickly. Everything that could have gone wrong “had” gone wrong and she knew nothing about `Calamity` as she had begun to call him. Not his name, nor his purpose, not a damn thing except he couldn't function well at all. As human males went he was ... well ... clumsy.

Lily had managed to get them out of the storeroom and into a cafe on site at the museum. 

“You mean you had no idea you were coming here?” Lily asked

“No, none at all. One minute I was rooting around in an antique shop and the next I found that painting and I knew I had to take it here directly. 

Lily stared at him “It`s a Blue you know.” Calamity raised an eyebrow.

 “Blue as in Ambrose Blue?. There were no known Ambrose Blue paintings left to be discovered unless perhaps it was in a private collection.” Lily said echoing what the curator had said.

The curator who had been passed the painting had been sceptical about its origin. “There are NO Ambrose Blue paintings left around” he snorted at the idea.  And then on closer inspection he had nearly choked and having left a photograph and a paper of ownership with Calamity had whisked it off to be authenticated. 

“if it is a Blue” Lily continued “then it would appear you may be quite well off”

Calamity sipped his coffee carefully “You think?” he asked. “You knew it could be a Blue but to be honest I know very little about art as a rule, I`m more a collector of old Games and consoles. I was rummaging around for an old Nintendo when I found the painting.”

“Games?” Lily asked. The blank look on her face spoke volumes

“You know PS4, Xbox, Nintendo, Game Cube.” He searched her face for signs of her taking the mickey. 

“I`ve played Poker before does that count? Only I wasn`t very good at it and lost to be honest” 

“Where have you been hiding all these years?” Calamity was thunderstruck. “The Moon?”

Finally, i shall list all the bitty types that can be adopted! More will be added eventually, but for now, this is the official list!

The list will include every bitty type and variants that they come in, including what sizes and amount of recommended professionalism you need to adopt them, don’t be afraid to ask about bitties that are unheard of, I will be happy to explain and answer any questions you all may have! Warnings will be applied to every bitty when necessary.

Decided to add extra info so that way its a little easier to decide on who to choose, so this is gonna be lengthy.

Disclaimer: if you have a history of abusing bitties, we, as a shelter, have the right to refuse your attempts to adopt a bitty.

Bitties are not things, they are living beings that love, cry, and get angry, they are sentient, they are basically people, treat them as such. Again, they are not things, nor pets, they are sentient beings, and should have a say in whatever you do, including adoption, if the bitty refuses to sign the adoption papers with you, then you cannot adopt the bitty, they are basically tiny roommates

 kudos to you if you get them into collage or get a job.

More suited for more experienced people, as they’re very aggressive at first, basically a tsundere asshole, they will bite if picked up without permission or if they don’t trust you. Very flirty as well, but are easily flustered.

Underfell Sans (Cherry Variant):

Comes in bitty and full-size, can have wings or be an lamia

While its recommended to be experienced with bitties when adopting these skittish sweethearts, beginners are allowed to adopt them if they appeal to the bitty

Underfell Papyrus:

Comes in bitty and full-size, can have wings or be an lamia

It’s recommended you’re experienced to adopt one of these bossy tol boys

Warning: These bitties WILL boss around Red and Cherry bitties, along with others, so it is recommended you set some ground rules with your Fell paps to prevent accidents or hurt bitties. You make the rules or the Fell Paps will do it for you.

Underswap Sans (Original Variant)

Comes in bitty and full-size, can have wings or be an lamia

Perfect for beginners due to friendly nature

Warning: these bitties act exactly like Undertale Papyrus bitties, but with short stature and optimistic, but they are no way in shape or form naive, they are mature adults, and will act like so if necessary. Cannot get drunk, and coffee can result in a very hyper skeleman, owners beware.

Underswap Sans (Berry variant, also called baby blue):

Comes in bitty and full-size, can have wings or be an lamia

Good for beginners with high energy, not exactly recommended you leave them unattended

Warning: these guys are tiny, emotional, and are the true embodiment of baby man. They practically don’t even know what a argument is, and are EXTREMELY energetic, entertain them or they will entertain themselves, which can risk them injury or worse. ABSOLUTELY KEEP THEM AWAY FROM SUGAR AND STOVETOPS, DO NOT ALLOW THEM TO COOK FOR YOU.

Underswap Papyrus (Original Variant):

Comes in bitty and full-size, can have wings or be an lamia

Very good for beginners due to their chill and laid back attitude, if you’re allergic to cigarette smoke, please PLEASE tell your bitty, they will switch to suckers to prevent your allergies from flaring up, don’t ask where they got them, they just seem to have an unlimited supply.

Warning: they are protective of their brothers, which are mostly the original variant of Underswap sans, this is why it is advised that you adopt these guys first before adopting a Underswap Sans so the pap trusts you.

Underswap Papyrus (Carrot Variant):

Comes in bitty and full-size, can have wings or be an lamia

Very good for beginners, smoke alot though, and its hard to keep them from smoking. People with allergies beware.

Warning: very protective of the Berry variants of swap bitties, tend to flee from conflict and pun unendingly 

Fellswap Sans:

Comes in bitty and full-size, can have wings, no lamia variants as of yet

EXPERIENCED OWNERS ONLY

Warning: These bitties can be very destructive and violent if angered, do NOT call them short or they will end you or at least remove a finger or two. However, if you earn their trust, they WILL be a mom friend, which is equally hilarious and scary, especially to Fellswap Papyri or clumsy owners.

Fellswap Papyrus:

comes in bitty and full-size, no winged variants nor lamia variants

Adept owners, at least, beginners may struggle with their stubborn nature and absolute refusal to step away from electronics.

Warning: these guys will steal your portable game consoles and hide them, you gotta set some boundaries to stop this habit in the later days, won’t really work on the first few days of adoption. They look indifferent but they’re actually so excited. These guys are dark-dwelling gremlins, if you see orange eyelights staring at you in the middle of the night, that’s just your Fellswap Pap buddy keeping an eye on you (or stealing all your cherry pop-tarts like a weirdo).

Swapfell Sans:

*Not to be confused with Swapfell Red Sanses*

These purble bois come in bitty and full-size, a few winged variants and lamias, but aren’t as common

Adept owners, these guys sometimes act like brats, so a calm owner is very much needed to have one of these boys in your home

Warning: these guys can have “LV Flares” where they suddenly become extremely aggressive and destructive, and can potentially kill owners or bitties, this is why when this happens, you should keep them in a large, sturdy room with toys and items that are ment to take a beating, daily training and non-fatal fights are recommended to keep the LV Flares at bay.

Swapfell Papyrus:

*Not to be confused with Swapfell Red Papyrus*

This socks and sandals kind of guy comes in bitty and full-size, no winged variants and a few lamias

Owners that have had a bitty or two and know what to do is recommended for these guys, due to the fact they are blind in one eye and smoke so much that their bones are yellow neck down, you can’t cut them from this habit, but you can ask them to at least smoke outside, can be a bit flirty though.

Warning: these guys have no such concept of personal space, they will sleep on your face, your stomach, or even on your bed, right smack dab in the middle so you have to move their nonexistent bums to the side or into their own bed, full-sizes are really heavy too. Be prepared to have a lot of annoying moments, but these guys prove to be amazing when an owner has anxiety or often has panic attacks, they’re just soft boys trying to get by in the world, they can relate to you in most departments.These guys have LV Flares as well, look in the swapfell Sans category for more details.

Swapfell Red Sans:

These sassy wine addicts come in bitty and full-size, no winged variants have been found, but lots of lamias

EXPERT OWNERS ONLY

Warning: if they find something breakable, there’s a good chance they’ll break it to get a rise out of you if they don’t trust you, they will explore what makes you tic and use those things against you if you turn out to be an abusive owner. These guys have much more frequent LV Flares than their swapfell variants, they can only be delayed, not prevented.

Swapfell Red Papyrus:

Flirty boyes come in bitty and full-size, a few winged variants and lots of lamias

EXPERT OWNERS ONLY

Warning: These guys are moody, self-deprecating and are more stubborn than a mule when it comes to names that don’t degrade them, or anything really, they will only react to degrading names like Mutt, and will not react to their given names until you manage to convince them. They tend to act indifferent to the world, a resting bitch face and all, they rarely show emotions but when they do, it shows more than a tractor in the middle of a herd of cows. Can actually be quite caring and protective of loved ones, they also have LV Flares, but are normally less violent than Swapfell Red Sanses

Outertale Sans:

Soft babies come in bitty and full size, can have wings or be a lamia

Beginners are 100% recommended to get one of these good, soft babies

Warning: these guys are a bit TOO chill at times, there have been reports of outertale sans bitties sleeping while on fire (don't worry, they put themselves out before it gets too bad) and often do a float. Loves to go stargazing, or anything space related.

Outertale papyrus:

Tol constellation bois come in bitty and full size, can have wings or be a lamia

Beginners are totally allowed to adopt one of these beans.

Warning: these guys like to make ice cream! It's a specialty in outertale (which is known to have the best ice cream in the multiverse), but while they can make ice cream with ease, their pasta skills still need some work, you can let them cook, just check on them every now and then to help them out.

Something to note: their scarves can have varying constellations, like the big dipper, little dipper, and the zodaics, a few have even been recorded to have constellations from the Elder Scrolls series!

Available Bitties for Adoption (Unique Species):

Strawberry Nightmare:

Comes in bitty and full-size, only lamias are available, wings wouldn’t make much sense seeing as they have tendrils

Perfect for Beginners! Ideal, even.

Warning: Extreme amounts of negativity can hurt a Strawberry Nightmare, and if exposed for long periods of time, they can turn into regular Nightmare bitties, though they will still have flecks of pink in their otherwise black sludge, along with the fact their eye color will remain the same. Very Rarely, Strawberry nightmares are born with a icy light blue eye, these bitties are completely blind, but have more magic than their otherwise normal brethren. They leave messes of goop when agitated or stressed.

Omenerror:

These special little bitties can come in bitty and full-size, they always have wings, they are just hidden and are only visible when being used, lamia Omenerrors don’t exist 

Good for those who are new to caring for error bitties

Warning: these bitties can turn into dragons, full-size dragon forms are the size of a tiger, while the bitty dragon forms are the size of an average house cat, full-size Omenerrors actually weigh 18.75 tons due to the fact that their bones are made entirely of lead and gold, but, thanks to magic, they can weigh an actually reasonable and not insane weight of 36 pounds. These guys can grow to be very tol boys, maximum for a full-size is eleven feet exactly and bitties can be a maximum of ten inches tall. They are mildly allergic to store bought chocolate and can only really eat the hand made stuff with natural sugars, artificial sugars will make them suffer.

Omenerrors need some very specific things in order to be properly happy and healthy, while this is optional, its recommended, the care package includes everything you need for this. They are a burrowing species of dragon, and thus need a box of sand to burrow in, the sand that comes in the package will hold its shape when burrows are made, and shoeboxes can be buried in the sand for the omenerrors to nest in, clear plastic tubs are for you paranoid owners out there, live cacti are also included, make sure to water the live plants.

Omenink:

These energetic meme and vine inky boys come in bitty and full-size, they always have wings, no lamias exist

Better off with a more experienced owners

Warning: Omeninks need to drink actual ink in order to survive on top of a diet of mostly meat and calcium, they will eat their greens and fruits but it doesn’t really benefit or hinder them. They will draw on your walls if not provided paper or any kind of artistic surface. DO NOT touch their wings when they are wet, they are flimsy and fragile like actual paper and look like origami, omeninks will melt metal items with fire and attach the molten metal to their wings to reinforce them.

Omeninks need a pool of extremely clean water with no chlorine, chlorine can cause lasting health issues as they can breathe underwater. A water purifier is included in the care kit along with a inflatable pool, clean water also makes an omenink feel safe enough to actually have children if they happen to have a mate. These inks have souls, very delicate souls, a mere touch can shatter their soul into tiny pieces. They also need a lot of attention and care to thrive, and WILL attempt to help an owner with gardening if they have that as a hobby or profession. They also have dragon forms, sizes are the exact same as the omenerrors, all omen-types have the same size of dragon forms

Omenswapfell Sans: 

very secretive omen-type variants, often can’t be told apart from swapfell and fellswap sanses, thus, little is known about them, as their availability is quite sporadic, they always have wings however, and it seems that almost all of them are full-sized

If you manage to adopt one, its recommended that you are an adept bitty caretaker

Warning: they can be very violent and protective, don’t EVER touch their precious bass guitar, you will get hit. Other than that, they are pretty tame for a Fell bitty. They can cook perfectly fine, but they tend to experiment with flavors and spices, they will insist to cook meals every day. “Aw, man,” I groaned, “No wonder he hates me.” He set me down in the spare seat of his upgraded Shark mech; was he suspecting this for awhile? The clicks of the locks on the seatbelts snapped me out of whatever trance or dopamine-induced civility I was just in.

“Uh, where are we going?” I managed to ask when he turned the mechanical shark on.

Your hands halt, glancing up at her for a second before turning back down and murmuring under your breath- “Me neither”.

“What made you?”

“I guess I missed….I missed home.” You admit with a meek upturn of your lips. “No matter where I went….”

...you could never escape the demons of your past. The change of scenery could never change who you were.

“Nothing beats home.” She nods in agreeance, leaning back. “I get it. I’m glad you’re back, Y/N.”

“Thanks. I’m glad to be back.” You bring your full attention onto her, exchanging smiles.

“Say…” She turns around, having gotten up and ready to greet you goodbye as her break was nearing the end. “...have you….have you talked to Seonho, yet?”

With the mention of him, something uncomfortable lodges in your throat. She quickly retracts her words. “I mean...it’s just that...I know it’s a serious-..um...he’s asked me about you.”

You manage a strained smile but your voice comes out weaker than you expect. “No. I haven’t got the chance yet.”

She nods, eyes downcasting in sympathy and understanding. “If you can...Y/N...you should really visit him.”

The dark past that had been chasing you for five years comes to catch you faster than anticipated. It wraps its arms around your body and holds you captive to regrets. Your limbs are chained by bitter anguish and it’ll never cease to play the game of ‘what if’ with you.

“I will.”

His fingers are wrapped around the orange container, hand shoving the white cap off to spill the pills into his palm. His pupils never stop scrutinizing the reflection in the mirror - not for a mere split second as he presses the bitter capsules to his bleeding lips and his tongue twines them. He forces the medication down his throat, despite knowing that it has no effects, that it will never be any curative for his illness. The label has all but faded away, ripped at the edges but he pays no mind as he shoves it back into the bathroom cabinet.  

It is another day that he must walk in the body that is no longer his.

“Jungkook. Your father would like to see you.”

He brings up his white bandaged hand, motioning to silence the secretary. His eyes are pinned straight ahead, lips in a straight line to perfectly mask his pain in a blank expression.

“I am fully aware.”

The workers of the floor peek their heads past their cubicles, orbs glued onto him and their mouths draw open. Murmurs befall from their lips, rolling off like sugar and melted butter - words like rich and handsome, ‘it’s the CEO’s son’. Yet, he can’t find it in himself to be satisfied by the numerous titles they’ve branded him nor does it swell the pride in his chest. It’s not to say that he is modest. He finds it amusing. Black suits, swept hair, expensive watches and a home worth more than millions doesn’t account to anything.

If only they knew how broken he was inside.

“You called me?” He shuts the door behind him, taking measured strides up to the desk where his father is seated behind in a chair, his hands clasped together in thought.

“Sit.”

He hides his uneasiness, forcing his hands not to tremble as he obeys. His father’s tone is icy and malicious but his eyes are even colder; a glare that could drive Jungkook to run through the colossal glass windows behind his father and pummeling to the hundred floors below - greeting death would be more merciful.

His father cuts to the chase, throwing down a stack of papers on top of the desk, in front of his eyes.

“Look.”

Jungkook immediately recognizes the white pages. “It’s...it’s the deal I signed yesterda-”

“I said ‘look’.”

He takes the documents into his hands, seeing no faults and turning the pages. He racks his brain, narrowing his eyes onto the endless black and white to find the mistake. He turns the page. He turns the page.

And on the very last one, he can barely recognize the swirling ink that signs the bottom of the sheet. It’s ordinary to see his name in someone else’s handwriting; work that he was suppose to do completed by another. It’s happened countless times before. But this time, it’s a clumsy mistake that has never occurred before. Instead of the name ‘Jungkook’, it is the signature of the name ‘Namjoon’.

“Are you kidding me, Jungkook?!” His father slams his fist against the wood of the table, his voice shaking with anger. Jungkook immediately winces back, not being able to help the shaking of his legs. “Do you take this as a joke?!”

“I’m...I’m sorry.” His teeth sink into the bottom of his lips, forcing the tears that well up in his eyes to wither away. “It’s...it was my...my…”

“Are you going to blame it on your fake disorder?” Jungkook’s father sits back in his chair, eyes still scrutinizing his son and after a full minute of silence, a chuckle falls from his mouth. It’s not a laugh of joy but one full of disgusted disdain and disbelief. “When will you grow up?”

“I’m…” He stutters before finally being able to look his father in the eyes. “..sorr-”

“Save your apologies.” He spits out sharply. “This. Whatever this is. Get it fixed. I can’t have someone signing fake names in contracts. I can’t have such an idiot taking over the company. You’re getting married soon, what are you going to do then? Stay home. Don’t come anymore. Not until you get it fixed or learn how to take responsibility and behave yourself.”

The two men stare at each other; the younger one with his hands trembling and orbs full of desperation…an ache to be acknowledged…..loneliness. The older dismisses him, looking away to the enormous towers out the window, each a rival and an ally. The two barely share any resemblances aside from the dark shade of their locks. Jungkook has softer features, a rounder face and contrary to his father’s cold ones, Jungkook has bigger eyes carrying an innocence that his father absolutely hates.

“Leave.”

The voices are screaming inside his head, his fingers twitching to switch but he holds it down, even when it pains him to the very core. No. No. Shut up. Shut up! SHUT UP!

Jungkook spares one last glance at the silhouette of his father before he withdraws into the darkness.

It must be urgent.

They had called you in the middle of the day, in the middle of your shift without giving much of an explanation, merely using the word ‘emergency’. And that awoke an instinct that you were trained with, causing you to run down the halls and past the other units to the third floor.

You swallow your gasps as you open the cream doors of the conference room, not wasting a second to knock.

“You called?”

Your arms are by your side, hands clenched in fists. Your white coat is slipping from your shoulders, the hair from your bun falling to the sides of your face. “Wha-what’s going on?” You take one scan of the vast room, the bleached coloured walls and the stretched wooden table sitting in the center. There’s an unfamiliar man wearing a business suit, sitting across from the chief who’s smiling at you.

They seem far too relaxed.

You’re on alert.

“Calm down, Y/N. Come. Take a seat.”

You follow the orders warily, narrowing your eyes at the stranger as you pull a black chair beside the older man. “How are you? You’ve only been back for a week. Are things going well?”

“Yes. They are.” It’s unusual that he’s asking you such trivial questions. “Is there something wrong?”

He hums, arms crossing. “Not wrong per say…But Y/N, this is Mr. Jinkey.” You nod at the black suited man who kindly smiles at you. “Mr. Jinkey, this is Y/N. She’s our modern day genius, entering university at an early age and the highest graduate amongst all her peers. She’s a certified clinical psychologist with a PhD and she recently came back from overseas. Currently, she’s running our entire Mental Health Unit.”

Your suspicions are only growing. He’s not one to give any compliments, afraid that egos will be blown up too big and end up exploding; ultimately causing harm. Your chief is known for throwing equipment at interns and shouting at nurses until they burst into tears. You’re certainly not a genius and you’re not running the unit either.

But for appearance's sake in front of the stranger, you give a tense smile. “Please. I’m just working my hardest…”

“Good. Good.” Mr. Jinkey nods his head in approval. “I think she’s suitable.”

“Really. There’s no one but her. If there’s anyone that can do it, it’s Y/N.” Your chief grows serious, staring at his clasped hands.

Your brows furrow together. “What’s going on?”

“Y/N…” He sighs, looking at you with a softened expression. “I’m going to give you...an off-campus job.”

“An off-campus job?”

The man in the suit pipes up, sliding over a manila folder across the table towards you. “Miss. Y/N, have you ever heard of Jeon Corporations?”

Of course you do.

They’re one of the biggest companies in the country. Even someone living in a rock would know of them. They own all kinds of land and utilities, areas of technology to energy plants. They employ over thousands of people and a large part of the country's GDP is on their shoulders.

You nod your head and he continues. “This is strictly confidential. The moment you open that folder, you’ll be bounded by contract. Of course, we have more official documents with us right now that require your signature.”

“Wait.” You hold out your hand, turning to look at your superior in utter confusion. “What’s going on. Can...can I get some sort of explanation?”

“Y/N.” He draws out a long exhale, dropping his voice into a low murmur despite no one being around that shouldn’t hear. “I need you to work at the Jeon household...to work in their abode. Their son….he suffers from-” inhale “….DID.”

Dissociative Identity Disorder.

The man looks at your chief in alarm for revealing classified information but your chief simply motions his hand. Mr. Jinkey fixes his posture as he stares at you. “Multiple Personality Disorder. Have you heard of it?”

“Yes. Of course..” You nod, questions finally being answered but your frown doesn’t cease. “I...I know of it.”

“Then will you help him?”

“I….Why do you need me to stay at his home? I can help him if he comes in regularly for therapy.”

“He can’t do that. There’s isn’t time.” Mr. Jinkey shakes his head slowly without moving his eyes away from you. “He must be cured within a year.”

“A year?!” Your jaw drops, fingers curling at the edge of the file. “This..that’s impossible! This disorder required a long term healing process.”

“Then make it short term.” Your chief cuts sharply and when you turn to him appalled, he gives you a sympathetic expression. “Y/N. I understand the difficulties but you can’t give up when you haven’t tried. This is a patient that needs your help and I sincerely believe that something can be achieved if you focus all your efforts into this one client.”

“He went to therapy previously but only for a few weeks. There’s little information but if you’re worried about it - he’s not dangerous.” The man tries to coax you. “He’s never been hostile since his diagnosis.”

“No.” You stand up, the chair falling behind you, colliding onto the ground. “I can’t.”

It’s all too much. You haven’t had much time to think. All of the sudden, you have to drop everything and all your patients for one. Someone you’ve never met, a rich boy from a wealthy household. You have to live with a stranger and cure his disorder within a year.

Things aren’t simple like that. Disorders like his take decades to improve, perhaps an entire lifetime. It’s a goal that is intangible, something outside the boundaries of your abilities. You can’t.

“I’m sorry.” You bow your head, turning on your heel to leave the room.

“You’ve changed, Y/N.”

The timber of your chief’s voice shakes the walls and causes you to halt mid-step. “The Y/N who came here six years ago as an intern would’ve never given up on a challenge. Especially when she hasn’t even tried.”

“Good.” You mutter under your breath as you turn around. “A lot of things in my life would’ve been less painful had I given up earlier.”

“That’s a foolish way of thinking.” He doesn’t look at you as if it’ll hurt him too much, staring at the ivory walls as his lips continue to move. “The drive and persistence to never admit defeat is what’ll lead you to a brighter future. If you stay in the same place, if you surrender to hardships, regret will simply build. It will build and build and build, until you wonder-”

What if.

“-what if.”

“Please.” The black-suited man turns to you and his stoic expression is ruined by the knot between his brows. “He needs your help.”

Ten seconds of quiet as you mull over the words and your own thoughts.

With your heartbeat pounding in your chest, you finally take one step forward.

“What is his name?”

“Jeon Jungkook.”

The first thing that you immediately notice is how high the walls are.

His house is encased by concrete stones and a metal gate entrance; reaching past the rooftop. But beyond is a luxurious residence, carrying a minimalistic modern style with sharp corners and flat ceilings. Enormous glass windows take up the spaces of the white walls, revealing the bare interior. As you’re walking up to the front door with the lights in the grass illuminating your path, you can’t help but feel like you’re treading through foreign territory - an adventure to save the prince trapped in the soaring tower.

You set the luggage down by your side, inhaling a huge breath to calm your nerves. Your fist raises to knock on the surface but then-

BANG!

“Mr. Jeon!” The black suited man who escorted you smiles.

You’re calming your heartbeat, startled to death at the door flying open, crashing against the wall from the force. And it takes one full minute for you to soak in the appearance of the so-called Jeon Jungkook.

He’s a lot younger than you’ve imagined. From the documents, you already knew that he was the same age as you but from his appearance, though looking tired and weary, he still somehow maintains boyish features. His cheeks are rounded, lips puffy with teeth imprints in his bottom lip exhibiting how he was nibbling on them prior to your arrival, most likely out of nervousness. His bangs are curled inwards into a comma motion, hair a dark shade of chocolate that matches his irises. If it wasn’t for the sick colour of his skin, the downturn of his mouth or the black bags under his eyes, you would’ve thought that he resembled an innocent rabbit.

Instead, with the way he sharply scrutinizes you, it looks like life has forced him against his will to become a predator.

Mr. Jinkey speaks up, shattering the silence and breaking your gaze on the boy. “This is-”

“I know.” He interjects. “You can leave.”

The older man bows his head and you watch his backside as he leaves to his car. Jungkook widens the door, abandoning it without sparing a second glance at you. Nonetheless, you exhale a huge breath as you step into his abode with your luggage, shutting the door behind you.

“How fast can you cure me?”

“Excuse me?”

You disregard the fact that he hasn’t introduced himself or asked for your name.

He huffs out as if each single word he utters to you adds to his exhaust. “How. fast. can. you. cure. me.”

“I...these things take time. Dissociative Identity Disorder is the most intricate and theoretically difficult dissociative disorder; it embodies the total variety of dissociative phenomena.” He continues to give you an unimpressed stare and you sigh. “We still haven’t talked about anything yet. This might...might take some time.”

“Do you think I’m lying?”

“What?” The handle of the suitcase slips out of your grasps in the moment that you grab it. “Why would I think that you’re lying?”

“A lot of people think this disease….disorder...whatever you want to call it...is a hoax. Fake.” He smirks at you, the side of his lip pulling. “I’m just a spoiled rich boy who’s ‘diagnosed’ with having multiple personalities. It’s my excuse to avoid inheriting the company so I can play all day.”

Your eyes examine him coldly. He’s in black dress pants, a black button-up shirt that’s rolled all the way to his elbows. More importantly, his arms are crossed together over his chest - a defensive position, body language that tells you he fears being vulnerable.

“I don’t really think that’s the case.” You smile gently and he falters, the frown alleviating for a mere heartbeat. “It’s not the sort of thing that someone can joke about either.”

Jungkook continues to gaze at you until he turns on his heel, mumbling something barely coherent about how your room is upstairs to the left. You don’t stop smiling, especially when you catch him rubbing his hands together out of nervousness.

The both of you are seated across each other, both on leather couches with the coffee table placed in between. You’ve dim the lights to create a relaxed atmosphere but keeping it bright enough for business to be conducted. With the way he’s tapping his foot, you assume he’s anxious with getting the first session started.

The first thing you have to do is establish the clear boundaries. “Jungkook, have you already signed the contract that was given to you?”

“Yes.”

“Then you should know that we’ll have at least one session every day. More or less can be decided depending on the circumstances.” He nods and you offer a kind smile. “If you need something from me, you can knock on my door since I’m down the hall. I’m here to help you with your disorder and any issues that you may have, nothing more and nothing less.”

“I understand.” He’s tapping his fingers on his thigh, a sign of impatience but he nods nevertheless.

“Good.”

“I’m also going to discontinue any medication that you’re taking right now. If I feel that it is necessary, I might prescribe you and then I can monitor you from there.” He nods. “Today I’m going to introduce you to talk therapy and psychotherapy. At any time that you may feel uncomfortable, you can tell me. Please don’t hesitate. You can refuse to answer any question. This space and session is meant for you. Whatever we discuss will also be fully confidential. Your safety is of my utmost priority.”

“Okay.”

“Our goal is to merge all personalities into one. Or at the very least, to resolve and make peace amongst all the personalities.”

You’ve taken a look at his documents before and the information of his few previous sessions. There was close to nothing aside from the notes that he had at the very least five other personalities. When met in any kind of danger, one of his personalities immediately takes over. Another common occurrence of when he switches to his alters is when he experiences strong emotions. It’ll be absolutely essential to build his stress tolerance and help him cope with stress and anxiety.

“Isn’t there a...quicker way? I want to get rid of all these other...things...personalities...whatever.” His brows are knotted together in frustration and he runs a hand through his dark brown locks. “Can’t you just make me...normal?”

“I understand your anxiousness, Jungkook. But all these steps are absolutely essential. They will help in the long-run.”

“Okay.” He leans back in the couch. “Fine.”

You smile at him, letting a bit of silence linger as you move onto the next topic. “We’re going to create a safety agreement. It’s just to reduce unsafe behaviours. This is a safe space but I want you to feel safe wherever you go.”

He breathlessly laughs, a mocking tone out of disbelief as he shakes his head. “Yeah sure. Tell that to the others.”

“This agreement is something that all the identities must acknowledge. They’re bound to it too.” He’s quiet, staring at the carpet. “This means that no matter who comes forward, I want you to recognize that you’re in control of your life no matter what, Jungkook. No one will be able to harm you or this body.”

He doesn’t respond for a long time, frowning with blank eyes at the wall. “Jungkook?”

“They’re loud.” He moves his eyes onto you. “I can hear them in my head.” There’s a pause before he breaks out into a smirk. “Do you think I’m crazy?”

“No.” You shake your head. “I don’t think you’re crazy.”

“Well I do.” Jungkook mutters. You catch a hint of defeat in his voice but no sooner he’s looking back at you again, waiting for you to continue.

“During our sessions, I don’t want you to fight the different alters.”

He frowns. “What? You…….......don’t?”

You shake your head. “The very core of this process is to make all the identities become aware of each other. Nothing good will come out of ignoring them. The goal is to try to resolve everyone’s innermost conflict. That being said, you still remain in control. If an alter does something that is dangerous, I want you to believe that you have the ability to come back.”

He inhales sharply, tilting his head out of skepticism. “I’ll...try my best.”

“And that’s good enough.” The corners of your lips upturn and you motion towards him. “Are they still speaking to you right now?”

“Yes.” He grimaces. “It’s hard to concentrate.They won’t shut up.”

“Then if you’re comfortable, Jungkook...and only if you’re completely comfortable - is it alright if I meet one of the alters?”

He blinks at you as if wondering why in Heaven’s name you would want to do something like that. But eventually his tense posture loosens and he slumps back. “Okay. If...if it’s weird or you get freaked out, I und-”

“Jungkook.” You interrupt. “It’s okay.”

He nods before inhaling a deep breath and shutting his eyes. He frowns and his nose twitches. His body winces once. Within five seconds, his eyes flutter open again.

“Hi.” You mask your startleness with a smile. His orbs are painstakingly cold, face blank of any expression and you’re unable to read his body language. “I’m doctor Y/N. Nice to meet you.”

He stares at the hand that shoots out. After an extended pause, you withdraw it. “Not much of a hand-shaker, are you?”

He chuckles lowly. “Don’t call me an alter.” Somehow his voice has dropped down a tone, timber rumbling and husky. “I’m a damn person.”

“I see.” You tilt your head in curiosity. “Then what’s your name?”

“You don’t need to know.” He cuts off. “Are you here to try to ‘fix’ him?”

“Answer my question and I’ll answer yours.”

He rolls his eyes, leaning back in the sofa and throwing his arm over the edge. The side of his lip tugs upwards. “Good luck sweetheart. Don’t think you’re getting rid of us anytime soon. He needs us. You’re causing more harm by doing this.”

The knot between your brows deepen. “Why?”

But before he has the chance to answer you or evade your question again, suddenly he closes his eyes. Jungkook’s face contorts in pain and then he slumps over, falling off the couch. He grunts out, hands grabbing up to his chest as if something is pounding from within. You immediately flinch forward but you don’t rush to his side.

“Jungkook?”

He catches his breath, gasping for oxygen and he manages to sit up, hands at the floor to support the weight of his body. He looks at you with weary eyes, lips parted and his head thrown back. Jungkook is still shaking.

“Do you hear me?”

His pupils flicker to yours at the question.

“You aren’t many people within one.” You strictly affirm. “You’re one whole person, simply sharing many identities.”

The words wrap around him like a comforting embrace. You’re the first person who’s ever believed him, who has ever tried to help, who has been by him when he’s needed it most.

A deep determination begins to root itself in the pits of your chest.

You already know - you’ll help until the end, no matter the consequences.

“You’re one whole person.”

The voice message plays once more.

“It’s me~ Nayoung! I texted you the address in case you didn’t remember. I know you’re busy, Y/N but there will always be a hundred excuses.” A heavy sigh is heard on the other line. “I know it’s not my place to say anything. But he’s asked about you for the past five years. If you have some time….” A slight pause holds suffocating silence to overwhelm your guilt. “....you should really visit him.”

The door opens, the walls are closed together with a thin glass separating the other half of the room. “He’ll be here in a moment.” The guard huffs out.

“Thank you.”

Your palms are clammy and you’re sitting on the edge of your seat. Doubts of - whether or not you should be here, if you should leave right now, if you should run, if he really wants to see you - begin to cloud your mind. But before you act on any of the urges screaming inside your head, the other door opens.

He’s there behind a guard, scruffy shadow around his mouth and bright eyes, aged then you last remember but still as happy. He has faint lines on his face, most predominantly under his eyes. He’s still the same boy that is dormant in your memories; running on campus, up to no good and giggling with you. The moment his orbs land on yours, he rushes over, almost tripping over his own shoes. A huge grin splits his mouth, pinching the apples of his cheeks pink. His lips move to your name as if he’s screaming it out in joy. But you can’t hear.

Tears fill your eyes and you exhale a deep breath, picking up the phone handle with a trembling hand. He does the same, nearly exploding out of happiness- “Y/N!” He exclaims and you laugh, scrunching up your nose at the sheer volume that threatens to burst your eardrums.

His orange jumpsuit blinds your eyes.  

“Seonho.” You smile. “It’s been a long time.”

You don’t know how or why. Three years ago if you had told yourself you’d be in this position, you would’ve ran to the ends of Earth to avoid it. You’ve already ran away most of your life. One more time wouldn’t hurt.

But somehow, you find yourself sitting, once more, across from the man who holds your heart captive.

N/A: Why Frank Castle would pick Zoarva as a cult? Is the human idea of evil and good, he firmly believes that Zaorva is the right side and Nyarty is the evil one.

Frank Castle is a man of faith, a man that believes in the right cause, so, of course, the man wants to join Zaorva´s cult to worship the entity, his devotion lead him to the higher level of a Sacerdote. His ascension was meteoric, to the point, people even forget their initial hesitation towards Frank, maybe, just maybe, they misjudge the man and Frank is the right man to serve Zaorva.

Or maybe not, as his position grown, so does his powers and his arrogance. What used to be a speech about love and cooperation, soon turn into claims of war, why we should share our land? Why we should obey them?

Soon the temple is in a delicate situation as the Sacerdote is getting bold in his actions, initiating a war that decimates a good part of the land and its people(a sin for the temple, as fight, should only happen in the last case scenario) are dead and Zaorva´s speech suddenly get a little modifications.

More wars break in the pacifist lands as people are getting homeless or worse, dead, in mass, more genocide in the name of peace, in the name of Zaorva.

The Temple send its best fighters to stop Frank, but, the man manages to have his own cult to workship their version of Zoarva, Bucky, the old winter soldier tries to fight Frank, however, Frank is not someone to play fair and in the end, the battle was won by Frank.

This was a situation to celebrate, Frank is way more powerful than the higher-ups of Zaorva, maybe, he is way more powerful than Zaorva herself. In one of his commission, a new face enters in Frank´s temple*built to his image) and the man can´t help by feeling she is an old face and maternal too.

"Come here to join the Temple of the New Zaorva?" Frank asked the woman with freckles and blonde hair. Her doe eyes are on his figure and for a moment, Frank thought this could be a relative of Kitty Pryde, they are very similar.

"NEW ZAORVA?" the woman asked tilting her head and then laughing, at first it was a normal laugh until it goes growing and growing to something nonhuman"That´s the most hilarious heresy I´ve heard, I would feel amused if I wasn´t seething in anger" her eyes open again to show the crystal blue hue as with a snap of her fingers the temple is in ruins.

No, they aren´t in their realm anymore, the woman´s body begins to grow as tentacles begins to appear and to some people in the temple, the sheer image of Zaorva in all glory(or reaching to her glorious form) is enough to melt their eyes.

"Genocide, destruction and heresy aren´t not what I want, little stupid human, beat my toys in an unfairly match is no victory, but, if you claim to be superior to me, then do it" Zaorva let Frank Castle cast the same spell he used on Bucky and on the same tricky way, it did work on a human, not on the Goddess of Creation.

In fact, Zaorva cut all his powers and his weapons are turned to dust, and Frank gets on his knee crying saying all he did it was for her name.

"My name? Insolent creature, You did this to please yourself, and now pay the consequences, if you can´t be a good person...then maybe you can be a nice meal" tentacles wrapped around his form as slowly bring his head to her mouth, Zaorva bite loudly making the few survivors run in panic, well, they did want to run, however, their legs are mutated into something akin of a green root giving a yellow puke.

"Oh, more dessert? How thoughtful of you" Zaorva said and using her tentacles did break the torse of one of them and bite hard then spit out "oh, my mistake, is not good enough, maybe more time to grow and be a delicious fruit? sslnotify.me - yet another OpenSource Serverless MVP

After ~10 years of experience in managing servers at small and medium scales, and despite the fact that I still love doing sysadmin stuff and I constantly try to learn new and better ways to approach and solve problems, there's one thing that I think I've learned very well: it's hard to get the operation part right, very hard.

Instead of dealing with not-so-interesting problems like patching critical security bugs or adding/removing users or troubleshooting obscure network connectivity issues, what if we could just cut to the chase and invest most of our time in what we as engineers are usually hired for, i.e. solving non-trivial problems?

sslnotify.me is an experimental web service developed following the Serverless principles. You can inspect all the code needed to create the infrastructure, deploy the application, and of course the application itself on this GitHub repository.

Enter Serverless

The Serverless trend has been the last to join the list of paradigms which are supposedly going to bring ops bliss into our technical lives. If Infrastructure as a Service didn't spare us from the need of operational work (sometimes arguably making it even harder), nor Platfrom as a Service was able to address important concerns like technical lock-in and price optimization, Function as a Service is brand new and feels like a fresh new way of approaching software development.

These are some of the points I find particually beneficial in FaaS:

very fast prototyping speed

sensible reduction in management complexity

low (mostly zero while developing) cost for certain usage patterns

natual tendency to design highly efficient and scalable architectures

This in a nutshell seems to be the FaaS promise so far, and I'd like to find out how much of this is true and how much is just marketing.

Bootstrapping

The Net is full of excellent documentation material for who wants to get started with some new technology, but what I find most beneficial to myself is to get my hands dirty with some real project, as I recently did with Go and OpenWhisk.

Scratching an itch also generally works well for me as source of inspiration, so after issuing a Let's Encrypt certificate for this OpenWhisk web service I was toying with, I thought would be nice to be alerted when the certificate is going to expire. To my surprise, a Google search for such a service resulted in a list of very crappy or overly complicated web sites which are in the best case hiding the only functionality I needed between a bloat of other services.

That's basically how sslnotify.me was born.

Choosing the stack

The purpose of the project was yes to learn new tools and get some hands on experience with FaaS, but doing so in the simpliest possible way (i.e. following KISS principle as much as possible), so keep in mind that many of the choices might not necessary be the "best" nor most efficient nor elegant ones, they are representative of what looked like the simpliest and most straightforward option to me while facing problems while they were rising.

That said, this is the software stack taken from the project README:

I know, at first sight this list is quite a slap in the face of the beloved KISS principle, isn't it? I have to agree, but what might seem an over complication in terms of technologies, is in my opinion mitigated by the almost-zero maintenance and management required to keep the service up and running. Let's dig a little more into the implementation details to find out.

Architecture

sslnotify.me is basically a daily monitoring notification system, where the user can subscribe and unsubscribe via a simple web page to get email notifications if and when a chosen SSL certificate is expiring before a certain amount of days which the user can also specify.

Under the hoods the JS frontend interacts with the backend available at the api.sslnotify.me HTTPS endpoint to register/unregister the user and to deliver the feeedback form content, otherwise polls the sslexpired.info service when the user clicks the Check now button.

The actual SSL expiration check is done by this other service which I previously developed with OpenWhisk and deployed on IBM Bluemix platform, in order to be used indipendently as a validation backend and to learn a bit more of Golang along the way, but that's for another story...

The service core functionality can be seen as a simple daily cronjob (the cron lambda triggered by CloudWatch Events) which sets the things in motion to run the checks and deliver notifications when an alert state is detected.

To give you a better idea of how it works, this is the sequence of events behind it: - a CloudWatch Event invokes the cron lambda async execution (at 6:00 UTC every day) - cron lambda invokes data lambda (blocking) to retrieve the list of users and domains to be checked - data lambda connects to DynamoDB and get the content of the user table, sends the content back to the invoker lambda (cron) - for each entry in the user table, cron lambda asyncrounosly invokes one checker lambda, writes an OK log to the related CloudWatch Logs stream, and exits - each checker lambda executes indipendently and concurrently, sending a GET request to the sslexpired.info endpoint to validate the domain; if no alert condition is present, logs OK and exits, otherwise asyncrounosly invokes a mailer lambda execution and exits - any triggered mailer lambda runs concurrently, connects to the SES service to deliver the alert to the user via email, logs OK and exits

Beside the main cron logic, there are a couple of other simpler cron-like processes:

a daily reporter lambda, collecting logged errors or exceptions and bounce/feedback emails delivered (if any) since the day before, and sending me an email with the content (if any)

an hourly backup of the DynamoDB tables to a dedicated S3 bucket, implemented by the data lambda

Challenges

Everyone interested in Serverless seems to agree on one thing: being living its infancy it is still not very mature, especially in regards of tooling around it. Between other novelties, you'll have to understand how to do logging right, how to test properly, and so on. It's all true, but thankfully there's a lot going on on this front, frameworks and tutorials and hands-on and whitepapers are popping up at a mindblowing rate and I'm quite sure it's just a matter of time before the ecosystem makes it ready for prime time.

Here though I'd like to focus on something else which I found interesting and suprisingly to me not that much in evidence yet. Before starting to getting the actual pieces together, I honestly underestimated the complexity that even a very very simple service like this could hide, not much in the actual coding required (that was the easy part) but from the infrastructure setup perspective, so I actually think that what's in the Terraform file here is the interesting part of this project that might be helpful to whoever is starting from scratch.

For example, take setting SES properly, it is non trivial at all, you have to take care of DNS records to make DKIM work, setup proper bounces handling and so on, and I couldn't find that much of help just googling around, so I had to go the hard way, i.e. reading in details the AWS official documentation, which sometimes unfortunately is not that exhaustive, especially if you plan to do things right, meaning hitting the APIs in a programmatic way instead of clicking around the web console (what an heresy!) as shown in almost every single page of the official docs.

One thing that really surprises me all the time is how broken are the security defaults suggested there. For example, when setting up a new lambda, docs usually show something like this as policy for the lambda role:

I didn't check but I think it's what you actually get when creating a new lambda from the web console. Mmmm... read-write permission to ANY log group and stream... seriously? Thankfully with Terraform is not that hard to set lambdas permission right, i.e. to create and write only to their dedicated stream, and in practice it looks something like this:

Nice and clean, and definitely safer. For more details on how Terraform was used, you can find the whole setup here. It's also taking care of crating the needed S3 buckets, especially the one for the frontend which is actually delivered via CloudFront using our SSL certificate, and to link the SSL certificate to the API backend too.

Unfortunately I couldn't reduce to zero the 'point and click' work, some was needed to validate ownership of the sslnotify.me domain (obviously a no-go for Terraform), some to deal with the fact that CloudFront distributions take a very long time to be in place.

Nevertheless, I'm quite happy with the result and I hope this could help who's going down this path to get up to speed quicker then me. For example, I was also suprised not to find any tutorial on how to setup an HTTPS static website using cloud services: lots for HTTP only examples, but with ACM and Let's encrypt out in the wild and totally free of charge, there's really no more excuse for not serving HTTP traffic via SSL in 2017.

What's missing

The more I write the more I feel there's much more to say, for example I didn't touch at all the frontend part yet, mostly because I had almost zero experience with CSS, JS, CORS, sitemaps, and holy moly how much you need to know just to get started with something so simple... the web party is really hard for me and thankfully I got great support from some very special friends while dealing with it.

Anyway, this was thought as an MVP (minimum viable product) from the very beginning, so obviously there's a huge room from improvement almost everywhere, especially on the frontend side of the fence. If you feel like giving some advise or better patch the code, please don't hold that feeling and go ahead! I highly value any feedback I receive and I'll be more then happy to hear about what you think about it.

Conclusion

I personally believe Serverless is here to stay and, it's fun to work with, and the event driven paradigm pushes you to think on how to develop highly efficient applications made up of short lived processes, which are easy to be scaled (by the platform, without you moving a finger) and naturally adapt to usage pattern, with the obvious benefits of cost reduction (you pay for the milliseconds your code is executed) and almost zero work needed to keep the infrastructure up and running. The platform under the hood is now taking care of provisioning resources on demand and scaling out as many parallel lambda executions as needed to serve the actual user load; on top of this (or, better, on the bottom of it) built-in functionalities like DynamoDB TTL fileds, S3 objects lifecycles or CloudWatch logs expirations spare us from the need of writing the same kind of scripts, again and again, to deal with basic tech needs like purging old resources.

That said, keeping it simple is in practice very hard to follow, and this case was no different. It's important not to get fooled into thinking FaaS is the panacea to every complexity pain, because it's not the case (and this is valid as a general advise, you can replace FaaS with any cool tech out there and still stands true). There are still many open questions and challenges waiting down the road, for example setting up an environment in a safe and predictible way is not as easy as it may look at a first sight, even if you're an experienced engineer; there are lots of small details you'll have to learn and figure out in order to make all the setup rock solid, but it's definitely doable and worth the initial pain of going through pages and pages of documentation. The good part is that it's very easy to start experimenting with it, and the generous free tiers offered by all the cloud providers make it even easier to step in.

What's next

Speaking of free tiers, the amazing 300USD Google Compute Cloud credit, together with the enthusiasm of some friend already using it, convinced me to play with this amazing toy they call Kubernetes; let's see if I'll be able to come up with something interesting to share, given the amount of docs and tutorials out there I highly doubt that, but never say never. Because the competition from VMWare was killing it’s market share. By making it free and offering support, Microsoft guaranteed it’s product a market share. But it is far behind VMWare and shows no signs of catching up.

Microsoft Virtual Server does not have the array of added value tools and utilities that VMWare has so cleverly identified and created. It is, surprisingly, a Linux kernel. It cannot be installed directly on the metal. Couple that with the fact that it must be hosted by a version of Windows server, and you can see that it does have some serious shortcomings.

Microsoft will kill off this product in the very near future. Because the plan is to modify the Windows kernel and implement a Hypervisor in Longhorn. There will be no need to have a separate virtual server if a Hypervisor becomes a standard part of the Windows architecture. In the meantime Microsoft Virtual Server is being virtualization marketed as a comfortable means to deploy multiple virtual Windows servers, and is aimed at the Wintel folk who tend to be a bit wary of Linux, and are addicted to the Win’95 desktop.

I said that Microsoft will include a Hypervisor in Longhorn. That may not happen. XENEnterprise

XenSource is developing a product named XENEnterprise. Originally, this product was aimed at taking market share from Microsoft. But because the recent deal between XenSource and Microsoft virtualization stymies that approach, XENEnterprise is now to be a ‘unique’ product which will enable users to host Linux, Solaris, (possibly) Macs, and Windows servers on a single Hypervisor. XENEnterprise is not free. I don’t know the price yet. But, presumably, it will be competitive with the competition. The key to this product is the ability to deploy it in any infrastructure and use it to host ‘any’ operating system. This is called “Appropriate Virtual Deployment” (well, that’s my invention but you have to admit it sounds pretty cool), and will please users and customers. Why? Because it short-circuits the Wintel folk’s fears and objections to Linux. Given that the majority of servers deployed in enterprise infrastructures are Windows based, this will enable those enterprises to take advantage of Linux attributes, such as security, stability, high availability and so forth, and virtualization still has that good-ole Win’95 desktop shining from every rack. One of the biggest advantages will be around the lowering of licenses when the hardware is multi-core CPUs. But that’s another article.

XENEnterprise has another big advantage over VMWare and Microsoft virtual offerings. ParaVirtualisation.

ParaVirtualisation enables near on-the-metal performance. There is no latency issue, it handles memory as a standard installation and it provides up to 30% overhead advantage when compared to it’s commercial rivals. It also includes, as standard, P2V tools. Add to this it’s exploitation of the processor virtualisation extensions now provided by both AMD and Intel, and you have the product of the future right now.

XENEnterprise is new. That presents a risk. When planning your virtual environment you cannot ignore this product, but, it’s a good idea to look carefully at whether or not you and your customer are prepared to accept the current risk, and if the other commercial products might present a safer Appropriate Virtual Deployment (sorry, couldn’t resist it).

Virtuozzo

Not the most well known of the virtualisation tools. But it does do what it says on the box. It differs in it’s methodology to the other offerings. Instead of virtualising at the hardware level, Virtuozzo virtualises at the operating system level. It provides multiple secure and isolated environments/operating systems on top of a single host kernel. The kernel is Linux, by the way. One upside is that because the Virtual Environments (VE) are at the o/s level, there is less overhead required to run the whole system than, say, VMWare or Microsoft Virtual Server.

Each VE has its own file system, memory, network devices, user and groups etc. Each is isolated from it’s virtual neighbours and can belong to entirely different network systems. High numbers of VEs can be created on a single host. Virtuozzo partitions the host operating system into as many VEs as required. One of the claims made about Virtuozzo is that it contains virtual sprawl. Hmm, not sure about that. With potentially hundreds of VEs per host, my thinking is that you could, inadvertently, create multiple sprawls on each box. Added together, this would equal a migraine for administration and management.

One of Virtuozzo’s coolest features is the ability to distribute applications across VEs. They can ‘load balance’ the application and decide which VE is best suited at any particular time to provide processing power for the application. This is called ‘Server Agility’. It’s very useful where it is necessary to co-host applications and services within a consolidated infrastructure. The system figures out which VEs are under-utilised and will use them to run the applications.

Virtuozzo claim to remove the problem of provisioning. Instead of having to calculate your provision of servers over three to five years, you just don’t bother. When you need more servers to host more applications or provide more services, you just knock up a few more VEs. Job done!

Virtuozzo comes complete with all the necessary management tools. It’s pretty much OOBE as it should be.

There are tools for moving VEs across different Virtuozzo servers in the event of a disaster. A SAN is not really required (which must be a big plus). That reduces costs tremendously and Virtuozzo claim that you can move live applications while data is in transit (“up to the last moment”).

Because Virtuozzo sits on top of the operating system, it supports all the hardware that both Linux and Windows support. This cannot be said of the other virtualisation products. They are a little more choosy when it comes to the ironware.

XEN

XEN was developed by a bunch of British ‘cheps and chepettes’ at Cambridge Uni’. They are still working with XEN, but have now launched XENEnterprise.

XEN is a Hypervisor. It is implemented from within a Linux operating system. You install SuSE or Red Hat (must be the Enterprise versions and no earlier than the latest releases), and after the installation you can choose to recompile the kernel to include the XEN extensions/code.

XEN has a very small footprint. It is under 60,000 lines of code. It’s a lean, mean virtual machine, and it is, probably, the best of all the virtual hosts currently available. I say this because it offers ParaVirtualisation, simple installation, near metal performance, and equals the low overhead of XENEnterprise. In fact, some figures show that it is more efficient than XENEnterprise.

Currently, XEN does not support Windows guests out of the box. But, if you install it on hardware that has the virtual extensions (AMD V and Intel VT) it will support Windows server guests. The failing is not XEN’s, it’s because of the way that Windows addresses the hardware. So, it’s Microsoft’s fault!

The biggest advantage that XEN has over all the others, is the simple fact that it is FREE. You get all of the advantages of all of the other virtualisation products, without the problems, and limitations of Microsoft, or the high costs associated with VMWare.

When installed, XEN runs completely invisibly. You can use it you want to. If you don’t it makes no difference to your host installation. It does not require any special browser extensions and you can manage it with VNC, SSH, or a third-party product such as the excellent NXMachine (go to nomachine.com to find out more about the NXMachine terminal server products). XEN truly is the best of the best. I use it everyday. I have my web servers hosted on two DL385s running SuSE Enterprise 10 as XEN. I can categorically state that installation, configuration and management really is very simple. So simple, in fact, that my dog can do it. Now that has to be a plus.

You don’t need expensive and unnecessary fibre connections, you don’t need intelligent switches or all that other techie ironware that has crept into the server-room. It’s simple, and it works.

More recently, a number of vendors such as StorageApps, DataCore, XIOtech, FalconStor, and StoreAge have arrived offering storage virtualisation at the network level, many in the form of storage appliances.

What this all means to us is confusion, sorry, choice. One final word of warning about virtualisation. It is NOT the answer to all problems. Even consolidation may not benefit from virtualisation. Use it where appropriate.
