Inside the Dirty Donkey

**Warning! This meta contains spoilers and speculation for S3. Do NOT tag Neil!**

Time to get comfy, folks. Get your drink of choice, be it a cupperty, coffee, or nip of sherry, and find a seat. You’ll definitely want to be sitting down for this one. We’re going to the pub!

The name is apparently a favorite of NG’s, used in his short story “We Can Get Them For You Wholesale.” And it also appears in the Sandman AU.

In the short story above the protagonist is a jilted lover who tries to organize an assassin for his fiancé who is having an affair with another man at their shared workplace. He meets the ‘salesman’ of the firm he contacts at a pub called the Dirty Donkey, and it escalates from there. The story is freely available online, so you can search it up if you really want to read it, it won’t take long. It mentions a pale horse, which is usually what Death rides in on, and is appropriate in the context of that story.

The question we need to ask is how does the name The Dirty Donkey apply to the Good Omens AU? Are there any context to the name at all?

There are several meanings for a dirty donkey:

Its a slang or joke name for a black horse (not particularly a dark horse, that has a different meaning altogether)

A cocktail

A sex position (I’ll let you look that one up yourself…)

Probably the first thing we need to talk about, though is an actual donkey itself, in relation to Jesus, as S2 is full of Jesus references and hints to the Second Coming in S3. Yep, it was all there in front of us, but we were too focused on other things. If you remember your Bible teachings, Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, because he came in peace. In ancient times leaders rode horses if they went to war, or if they came in conquest. But arriving by donkey meant you came with peaceful intentions.

But Jesus didn't turn up in S2, you say. And certainly not on any hairy beast. Ah, but he did - metaphorically. Gabriel as Jim turned up - he came up the street, by (the Dirty) Donkey, walking through spilled blood tomatoes, then mentioned his arms were no longer sore (because he had been taken off the cross.) MrPeriod talks more about how Jim represents Jesus here, and it might be worth revisiting it at length another time, as there is quite a bit to unpack there.

There are also the two big golden lions perched on either end of the bar inside the pub, that look rather ominous. The lions are strongly connected to Jesus and his resurrection, representing his return. (I'm still planning to have a better look for more lions in both S1 and S2, but that is still a WIP at the moment.)

There is also the scene in 1941 where the Nazi zombies stagger into the Dirty Donkey and spy on Aziraphale and Crowley through the windows through to the book shop, but all they manage to get is “Banana, fish, gorilla, shoe lace with a dash of nutmeg.” It sounds a bit like a cocktail reference – well, the nutmeg is definitely a GO ref to a certain cocktail – but the cocktail called a Dirty Donkey has cinnamon in it, in the form of cinnamon schnapps, not nutmeg – plus chocolate liqueur and rum. So maybe not.

But perhaps the most important thing we have to examine is the conversation about Jane Austin that Aziraphale and Crowley have in the pub, in S2E2. Because its got so many levels you just about need a break for extra oxygen half way down. Ha! And you thought it was a couple of funny throw-away lines about how Aziraphale saw human romance...

OK, this is the section of dialogue we are going to look at:

AZIRAPHALE: If you're going to invoke fiction, you might as well do it properly. CROWLEY: Properly? AZIRAPHALE: You remember Jane Austen? CROWLEY: Yeah. I'm not gonna forget her in a hurry, am I? The brains behind the 1810 Clerkenwell Diamond Robbery. Brandy smuggler. Master spy. What a piece of work. AZIRAPHALE: She wrote books. Novels. CROWLEY: Jane? Austen? AZIRAPHALE: Yes! CROWLEY: Whoa, bit of a dark horse. Novels, eh? AZIRAPHALE: Yes. They were very good. CROWLEY: Well. No, I'm just surprised, that's all. You think you know someone. AZIRAPHALE: She had balls. CROWLEY: Well.... AZIRAPHALE: Cotillion balls. People would gather and do some formal dancing and then realize they had misunderstood each other and were actually deeply in love.

Ready to dive into the levels on the Jane Austen conversation? Let's go...

Level 1: It’s a conversation about the novelist Jane Austen, and it sounds like they both met her, but they remember her in different ways – and Crowley’s memory is rather surprising!

Level 2: There is a mention of a robbery. This makes the parallel with the 1967 scene in S1E3 Hard Times, where Crowley has a secret meeting in the Dirty Donkey to plan a robbery to steal holy water from a church. The robbery in the above conversation involves diamonds (are you taking note/s? This is important!) from Clerkenwell, a district of London of some notoriety. It was famous for it watchmakers and jewelers, but it was also the home of Oliver Cromwell, who has a link to the 1650 date mentioned in S2E1 and the Eccles cakes, to Charles Dickens (author of A Tale of Two Cities, a book of note for GO) Oh, and both times Crowley is wearing a "Tactical Turtleneck", which others have noted he wears when he is doing his own master spy work, such planning or discussing robberies, or sneaking into Heaven to rob them of information!

Level 3: There is Aziraphale’s idea about how a romance should be conducted, by hosting a cotillion ball with formal dancing, because he's read all those romantic novels by Austen. And we get to see that played out in S2E5 in the eldritch ball. Crowley's idea of a romance was to get caught in the rain and kiss, then - vavoom!

Level 4: Why mention this apparently fictional side to an author of fictional romance? Well, on one hand, it’s an interesting but dark set-up for a joke later at the beginning of S2E6. I ended up discussing it at length here, but the short of it is that it is our usual human custom not to speak ill of the dead, and this is a form of extreme black-and-white thinking. Here, Aziraphale speaks of the good/white side of Jane Austen, that is well known, but Crowley speaks of the black/supposedly forgotten or unspoken bad side of Austen.

Level 5: Here’s the S3 information. Have you been paying attention? Did you take note? The parallels were the robberies between a church, and diamonds? That she was a brandy smuggler? Do you know where they smuggled brandy from? And do you know where Austen actually lived? On the South Downs, overlooking the Channel to France…

Whew. I think I need a drink after that. Cheers!

[Edit: I've recently finished a meta on the Bentley and how that relates to black horses, and it's occurred to me why the ethereal lift, or "hellevator," is in the entrance to the Dirty Donkey. Black horses are symbolic spirit guides between the worlds of the living and the dead, so this makes the perfect place to put the lift!]

AU: My first request one shot fic. I hope I did justice. Reader's first case and Lockwood makes sure the reader is alright. Hope you like it!!

"Are you okay?"

You looked at the boy, standing at the door, concern painted all over his face.  

"I'm fine." You hid your nervousness. 

You were sitting in the living room of an agency called Lockwood and Co. Involuntarily shaking your knees. Your mind was running a thousand miles per second. This was your first case, it's normal to be nervous. 

You got this job last week. You came from a small town with nothing but a rapier and a dream. You first discovered your talent when you were seven years old. 

You were playing in the field with your friends when you touched a tree and saw a man hanging from it. That's when you discovered you have talent.

Also, It was a horrifying thing for a kid to see but it intrigued you, instead. Since then, you wanted to be an agent. 

Anyways, it's almost time to leave for work. Lockwood calls your name, breaking your train of thoughts. 

"Hi," Lockwood muttered.

"Hey.." 

"are you..okay?"

"I'm okay but I'm nervous." 

"I could tell. It's normal to be nervous. I was too, when I got my first job." 

Really?"

He nods, not leaving your eyes. You gave him a smile. You don't have a choice but to be confident. You don't want to lose this job

"Ah home for tonight." George sighed while settling the bags. 

"We still have half an hour in our hands. Fancy some tea?" You asked. You received some enthusiastic nods as a response and made yourself to the kitchen.

You pop the kettle and settle on the counter. You closed your eyes and touched a few items in the kitchen, looking for some clues.

"Find anything?" Lockwood peeks inside the kitchen.

"Not yet" 

When you opened your eyes, you found Lockwood making tea and handed you a cup. You sipped your tea, content with the warmth it gives to your heart. One thing you love about Portland Row is the tea. Lockwood makes the best tea but you can't reveal this to anyone. If George finds out he will be pissed off, he takes pride in his culinary skills.

"Shall we?" Lockwood gives you his hand.

"We shall." 

It was harder than you thought. The visitor is strong and fast for some reason. You and Lockwood are trying to fight off the visitor while George and Lucy are looking for the source.

"WATCH OUT." 

You dodged and swung your rapier on the Ghost. "Lockwood, I don't think there's only one visitor." 

Before he could process you pushed him to the corner and threw a salt bomb on the ghost which was standing behind him. Lockwood was startled for a moment but he regained his composure.

Soon, both of you were fighting off the visitors in such ease, it's like a dance routine. It's like you both are meant to be together. 

"WE FOUND" 

You heard Lucy from across the room.

"Take your time to secure it, no pressure." With a dash of sarcasm you swung your rapier for the last time. It was gone. The visitors disappeared, the room went quiet. You can only hear your heavy breathing. 

You tried to stand but you fell on your knees, you felt a sharp pain in your waist. You touched it and felt warm blood oozing from your wound. 

"(Name),are you okay?" Lockwood gave you his shoulder, pulling you off the floor.

"I don't remember how..i hurt myself." 

"Don't talk right now. I'll patch you up, hold on." 

You're back in your room, sitting in your bed watching Lockwood practically running around the house. Looking for a med kit. You shook your head in exhaustion. 

"Lockwood I'm fine." 

The rustling stopped for a moment, you thought maybe he left and went outside the house but you were met with heavy footsteps.

"Fine?" 

You looked up with your droopy tired eyes. You saw Lockwood taking a seat in front of you.

"You're far from fine." He grimly said. "May I?" He gestured to your shirt. Silently asking to remove it. You nod in response. 

He helped you take it off, he didn't meet your eyes and you also felt the wall beside you looked interesting. He silently cleaned up your wound, muttering in his breath. 

You felt the tension inside the room so high, you might die from lack of oxygen. "You scared me." 

You looked at him in astonishment. "Lockwood.."

"If you say 'fine' one more time, I won't talk to you" he huffed. It made you smile. 

He's so cute

"I'm sorry. I should've protected you better."

"It's not your responsibility to protect me, Lockwood" 

"It's my name written on the door. It's my responsibility to protect my employees" 

You couldn't figure out why the word 'employee' hurt you a little. 

After patching you up, he sat beside you. 

"You saved me but I couldn't protect you. I'm sorry." He looked so guilty it broke your heart.

"I'm sorry. I'll be more careful next time" you gave a reassuring smile to him. 

You both remain quiet for a while, silently enjoying each other's company. 

"Does it hurt?" 

" Yeah a little, but I'll be alright soon. I think I'll just lay down a bit." 

"Oh yes, yes." He helped you lay on the bed. He tucked you in, literally. You blushed at his actions. 

"Are you really fine?" 

"Lockwood for the love of God, I am fine. Please don't worry so much." You cried.

"I..was just making sure you're okay. Jesus." Nonchalantly, he replied. 

He got out of your room and closed the door only to open it again. 

"Are you okay, name?" This time he's just annoying you. 

You threw a pillow at his face but before it hits him, he shuts the door and laughs mischievously. You smiled to yourself and went to deep slumber.

not rude! unfortunately posts about pronouns arent one of the things i strictly catalog, so you could try looking through my #pronouns tag but there isn't much there, so there's no guarantee you'll find the specific post you're looking for.

i did likely tag a post like that with something like #queer or #trans but i have so many posts and reblogs tagged those things- I'm not sure it'd be worth your time to comb through them. I also wasnt aware any post I'd made about pronouns had been reblogged so idk if i could find whichever one might've been reblogged recently.

uuuuuhh for a quick rundown of my thoughts i guess I'd say:

using it/its pronouns is GENERALLY dehumanizing to most people because it's a way to show people that you think very little of them, that you're comparing them to something *less than human*

Of course this functions within the idea that "human" is inherently better or higher in the hierarchy than "animal" or "plant" which isn't inherently true- but that's its own post.

so you're being misgendered or de-gendered as a show of disrespect/contempt.

HOWEVER. if someone WANTS to use it/its then all of that kind of flies out the window. how is that disrespectful, it's just your actual pronouns. it can't be dehumanizing if the person in question doesn't consider it dehumanizing, or doesn't consider being non-human less dignifying, or a dozen other potential reasons that person feels comfortable with it/its.

like some of us know that our overlapping identities make us less than human to a lot of people already, so why bother trying to insist you're included in a version of humanity that CLEARLY wasn't made to fit you (we talked about this a lot in my black readings class last year, about how, like, a lot of modern concepts of what it meant to be a human were created to kind of intentionally strip black people of the "human"/"person" status.)

so like if I'm already a monster and a freak and inhuman why does it matter if I use human pronouns or not.

and there's prolly more i could say but I should get back to my homework now, hah.

2022 TAZ Fic Recs!!

There has been so many bangers I've read this year, oh my goddd. This list is mainly just me going through my bookmarks to share everything that's on them, because other people deserve to see them. I will not be @-ing every author, because honestly, I don't know if all of them have Tumblrs or what their usernames are if they do sldfsdf. But they'll be linked with the story!

Fics with a black heart emoji (🖤) in front of them have content warnings that really need to be adhered. I'm taking warnings from what I remember and what is in the tags of the story already. If I need to add anything else, let me know.

On the Deck of the Starblaster by papergardener - The Starblaster crew takes a well-deserved break in the sun. It's so soft that it makes my heart kinda ache, tbh! Could not recommend more.

parlay, as a gamble by anistarrose - Lucretia doesn't erase the concept of Parley as well as she meant to and Merle reaches out to the Red Robe. This one is beautifully heartbreaking and hilarious, I'm in love with it.

🖤 Symptoms by The_Fanfic_Train - The crew has defeated the Hunger and now they must through the mortifying ordeal of healing. This one got me real good, ngl. It shows so much growth and strength and adds a very realistic side to the characters that I very much enjoyed reading.

Warning for suicidal tendencies, negative thoughts, and self-destructive behaviors, and mentions of blood.

Who Have You Become In The Wake of All That's Happened? by ArtsyRiv - Magnus and his experiences with his hair and the styling of those around him. As someone who has also written an entire fic about hair, this is so beautiful. It captures the feelings connected to hair presentation so, so well and, to top it all off, T4T Magnulia, hell yeah.

🖤 I Tried To Do The Best That I Could by ArtsyRiv - Lucretia's been having nightmares in the wake of the Redaction. She's not coping with it well. This story is so beautifully written and pulls you along with all the feelings and emotions mixed in. It's soul-destroying but in a beautiful way.

Warning for self-harm, EDNOS/Eating disorders, some suicidal ideation, and an emetophobia warning.

Caves and Cypress by crowsong - In the simplest of terms, a character study of Barry between the end of Stolen Century and the beginning of Here There Be Gerblins. It's amazingly complex and so well thought out. It tossed me between angst and yearning so quickly that all my emotions jumbled up and came out as tears. There are some fun Barry and Lucretia interactions in here, as well as some very fun Barry and Kravitz interactions.

it's my party and I'll mope if I want to by Grabbingatpowerandkissingit - Angus and Lucretia make Taako a birthday cake. It's fun and funky and fresh, with a very nice little dash of angst sprinkled in. I adore it in every way.

Someone I Have Loved, But Never Known by anistarrose - A fucking fantastic AU of Barry and Lup also being voidfished and remembering their married but don't remember it's too each other. It's hilarious and so in character, I could not recommend it more.

I Saw Seven Bounties by umbraastaff (jothending) - Kravitz took all seven bounties because things like this usually come as package deals. He soon realizes he's sorely mistaken. This one is so fun. I have so many thoughts about Barry and Kravitz's interactions between Stolen Century and HTBG's and this fulfills like, half of them at least. The writing style is so charming and nice, I very highly suggest you read it.

leaving, as an injustice by anistarrose - Another absolute banger by Rose. Sort of a spiritual successor to "parley, as a gamble" further up the list, this is another fantastic Merle fic. With Mavis as the main character, we get to see Merle in a light that not a lot of people choose to write about. It's fantastic and deep and beautiful, an amazing read.

Some of my best friends are liches by Grabbingatpowerandkissingit - So, so, so good. What if Lup had gotten out of the umbrastaff really early? What if they had to deal with two Red Robes instead of one? Everything Reese writes is delightful and zesty, but I have a special place in my heart for this one.

Scamming me, scamming you by Noodyl - Taako thinks he's flirting with Kravitz. Kravitz thinks he's being scammed (and he's kinda loving it?). This is so hilarious and I love the way Noodyl writes Kravitz, it's so very good. A perfect fun fic to wipe away all your sorrows.

🖤 Immortal Mortality by vacuumfluorescentdisplay - I just discovered this author and I'm going wild about them, just a little. This is such a good take on various deaths throughout the Stolen Century. It's so lived-in and refreshing to read and it brings a lot of humanity to the Starblaster crew, dealing with the most living-being-oriented problem: Death. Fantastic read and fantastic writing.

Warning for character death, including drowning and extreme hypothermia. There are also blood mentions and injury descriptions.

unreliable narrator by owlinaminor - An older fic but such a powerful one. It shares Lucretia's POV throughout her entire life up until just after Story and Song. It has given me a new way to view Lucretia and the way I write her and is such an impactful story. The writing style is fantastic and beautiful, I cannot recommend this more.

but the strange lights in the sky were shining by anistarrose - Barry knows things are off but he can't pinpoint why. This one so perfectly captures the feeling of offness from being in a new world but not being able to remember how or why you got there. It's very quick-paced and really captures you in the moment of it all. So good.

Live Like This by Grabbingatpowerandkissingit - Reese has once again taken an already brilliant AU idea (Tuck Everlasting-based AU, my beloved) and made it amazing. Barry's reoccurring encounters at the Fair and his life in between. It's an amazing story and so lived-in and thought-out. It's so very good.

Offworld by vacuumfluorescentdisplay - Last but certainly not least, this masterpiece. I just finished reading this the day I'm writing this and it's incredible. Barry is trying to escape his (criminal) pass and Taako and Lup are just trying to stay alive. This story follows their trip and their slow fall into trust. Tom is so good at world-building and making the characters feel multi-dimensional. The world(s) here are fantastically built and the storyline is even better. Again, I would very highly recommend it.

And that's it!! This got a little long but I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anyone on my list sldkfsdf. Shout out to all these amazing authors and all the ficlets I've been seeing all over my dash. There's so much life and love in this fandom and I adore reading every single thing I come across.

Hiii i will answer in an ask since using tags would be quite cumbersome.

I want to firstly say that im sorry for assuming your identity. I shouldn't have done that. I'm a little bit sensitive when it comes to this matter since i saw a lot of....pretty mean stuff that people said about otherkinity since i entered the community even when it wasn't necessary bad intentioned, so that why's i immediately jumped to the assuming that you were the same. That's the reason, but not a excuse so I'm sorry. I didn't meant to hurt you or anything like that.

Also, i def wont block you or any mutual over this, especially when yall are very respectful and understanding and especially when in this case it's just more a matter of view towards a recognized issue (man why does this sound so formal.....i hate english). And i hope you didn't took my tags as an attack or anything of sorts, i just wanted to raise an issue that worries me a lot, especially when the majority doesn't even know what otherkinity is or when they do, they mostly brush off/ignore it.

Even nowadays, when i try to regulate my usage of the word "kin", i still think to myself "man im too much of a kdj kinnie blergh" because it's too integrated in my brain from all the jokes/memes. So like. I think it would hypocritical to not clarify that. + you tags were far from incoherent, quite the opposite! I think my tags was messier lol

Thing is i do agree somewhat with your views/opnion and i do agree that 90% of the people use it as way to express their love or understanding or empathy with a character and i think that's amazing. But i also, it doesn't erase the fact that it do help erase and block the voices from community and does nothing to raise awareness, and still perpetuate the harm done to the otherkinity. Especially! Towards fictionkin. Although I'm not fictionkin and i dont speak over their issues, from what i seen in some posts the fact that "kinning" became so popular esp in the context of "kinning" a fictional character, it make it harder to talk about their experiences and only intensify the pre-judgment and steorytyping.

Just because "kinnig" is popular now, it doesn't mean that it has/will be that way forever. Over the years, there were many harmful words that were popular in usage but were dropped off and substituted by other non-harmful words later on and "kinning" can be one of those too. I like to discuss the understanding or empathy one have towards characters and i like how this type of discussion became more popular due to "kinning" and precisely because of that, that i find important for us (as in, people on the internet) to popularize alternative terms, akin to how "generative media" is becoming more used than "AI" in some spaces.

It's true that there is no other popular term, and that precisely why it's even more necessary to use alt terms to describe this understanding one have towards a character.

But like you said, its more a matter of opnion/views more than anything. But again, i think it would be at least the minimum if people outside of the community raised more awareness and gave more voice to otherkin ppl, which i dont see happening. I just came to know what otherkinity is because i remembered the term "voidpunk" from the aro community and when i went to search it on tumblr i saw it being tagged in otherkin posts, rather than a directly seeing the term in a post from the dash or anything like that.

So if people outside of the community use kinning, then at least i hope they also care about the community itself and our opinions, experiences and issues. I hope one day, otherkinity would be more known and accepted rather than remain with the popular knowledge of "identity made up by cringe mentally ill tumblr teenagers, who are northern american/european" (at least for me, as an Brazilian, the last part is really depressing) (I hate being seen as USAian or european. Like. Ewww)

I kinda fear that all this discussion about otherkin language and kff will just be brushed as "silly tumblr discourse made by chronically online ppl" rather than something serious to think and talk about, especially in outside circles. so like. Im sorry if im getting too emotional or anything about that, in this aspect, its less about you or my mutuals as individuals and more about "many, many, many people and society in general are pretty ableist, mean and ignorant when it comes to subcultures like this and i want to more people understand that and try to find an alternative way to describe a pretty positive and funny experience without harming other people".

I guess that as long as it harms people, even in indirect ways, i will still be uncomfortable with the term kinning and i dont think i would be ever or so soon be comfortable in using it the way i used before, but that's on me. At the end of the day, people are free to do what they want, and i respect that freedom, especially when they're understanding/respectful/well-intentionated.

oh it's okay i mostly keep this blog to fandom/games i get why you would assume things, especially about this! i don't mind other people having differing opinions/feelings, just that i personally don't mind kinnies (as long as they're respectful ofc) + indulge in the kinnie stuff myself. and you're completely in the right to be uncomfortable with it yourself, i wasn't looking to change your opinion but just express mine ^^ i get that it's a touchy topic for a lot of otherkin, i felt that i had to bring up the otherkin/kinnie distinction in that ask because ignoring to just reply with the kinnie definition would leave people ignorant. better to educate people to the best of my ability than to leave people in the dark.

if i start seeing a big push for new language i'd totally be on board to swap to it.. but unfortunately a lot of the alternatives i see are just never used compared to kinnie/kinning. i believe what's most likely to happen to replace kinnie is not a term created specifically to replace it, but a popular new word that just happens to have the same meaning. maybe some good might finally come from tiktok's easy virality🤷

i just spent all day playing The Final Horizon 😎😎 initial thoughts under the cut!! (minor spoilers of course)

So the cool thing is: Amy, Knux and Tails are playable in 3D for the first time in 17 years! The not-as-cool thing is... well, they're playable in 3D for the first time in 17 years. They sat out for the whole 2010s, and for me they feel the part.it's taking me conscious effort to adjust to their new movesets, but all the super-precise platforming mini-gauntlets floating about are helping

I remember seeing Shadow Boost in Generations and wondering how his and the other characters' full movesets might differ from Sonic's. I remember thinking, maybe in the next game we'll find out--the little-story, Sonic-only thing will blow over by then, right? I was in middle school. So seeing his friends Boost now is like... man.

I ignored the game's "hey go over here" prompts for hours to fill out the map and unlock/practice everyone's moves. Then i jumped off high places to find More Stuff way before i was probably meant to lol. Every time i considered furthering the plot, i saw an even higher place tempting me to keep Classic Spyro-ing that shit, it was great

Survey for a Research Project

Hiya! So in my English class we’re doing this research topic and we had to pick something we felt was unjust/an injustice. I chose to do my project on how doctors don’t give the same quality of treatment to their fat patients compared to those that are skinny, inspired by this post as well as this one I saw a while back!

We all have to do some kind of survey, interview, or observational experiment for this project. I wasn’t quite sure who I could interview for this topic, and I don’t think an observational experiment could have worked out, I made a very quick survey! There’s 8 questions (technically 9, but the last one can be ignored) and should only take a couple of minutes to complete. It’s also completely anonymous!

She flinched as a wave of heat rippled through the air, searing her skin. She could hear the raging inferno racing towards them from behind, and in the corner of her eye she could just make out flames licking the walls. When she inhaled, she got a lungful of hot air and smoke and coughed, the raggedness grating heavily in her chest. The rolling thunder booming overhead increased in intensity, and the roiling storm clouds had darkened to a near black that worried even the White Lotus. During one such stormy day, Katara had dashed towards her room after an onslaught of freezing rain disrupted practice with her mom. Automatically, she went for the spot where she usually Adlartok: a niche she carved out herself, placed down on the ground and behind the door so that when someone walked in, it would hide him. She got to her hands and knees and eagerly pulled out the bucket. But when she peered into it, all she saw was water. No. Panic slammed into her chest, knocking the air from her lungs. No. - When Adlartok goes missing, Katara and Sokka embark on a rescue mission.

Since I just saw some Ao3 discourse across my dash again, I just want to say: I think it would be great if there was a similar site to Ao3 that was explicitly kid-friendly and heavily moderated. I’m against turning Ao3 into that site, but I think it would be good if that site existed. I don’t care enough to actually make it happen myself, but I’d probably cross-post some of my stories there and maybe donate to keep it running. This is not meant as some sort of gotcha, I think people should really get on that because it would be a net good for fandom overall.

The love square in Miraculous Ladybug seems so simple (“hey, that Superman-Lois-Clark thing? What if it went both ways?”), but I am in awe of how finely tuned and balanced it is. Both to make it plausible, and to make it interesting.

The show goes to great lengths to show that all sides (and in particular the two main ones) are absolutely realistic options if it weren’t for the rest. Adrien always liked Marinette and has been positively smitten with her since about season 2. Ladybug was always fond of Chat Noir and this has only increased. The one major time where Ladybug officially rejected Chat Noir, in Glaciator, was also one of the softest and genuinely most romantic moments between the two.

And at the same time, they didn’t make it too simple. The love square is not symmetric when you look at the details. Marinette’s feelings for Adrien and Chat Noir mirror his for Ladybug and Marinette to some extent at a very high level, but if you look down at the details, they’re all developing differently, at different paces, for different reasons, all the time. Chat Noir is the big romantic flirt. Marinette is head over heels and thwarted by anxiety. Both like grand gestures, but for Marinette it’s gifts, for Chat Noir it’s big events.

The show looks so simple, and I guess parts of it are. But the way our heroes interact in the love square is anything but, and that’s what makes it so much fun to watch.

I have had the suspicion in the last few days that I've been missing posts from my main dashboard, despite my keeping up with it. Like the other day, I accidentally went into one of the other tabs I usually ignore, and right at the top I saw an art post by someone I follow that I swear I never saw in my main feed, which I keep up with constantly. Or people's self-reblogs suddenly being the first time I saw the post despite me being pretty sure I'd scrolled the whole way through it. There had better not be some algorithmic shenanigans at play on the main dashboard suddenly. I hope it was just me scrolling too fast and not registering them in my tired brain, and they aren't getting disappeared on purpose so that Tumblr can have me 'discover' them elsewhere.

I don't want a favs tab. My dashboard is my favs tab. I've chosen those people to follow, because I want to see their content.

I don't need a 'what you missed' tab, because I shouldn't be missing posts if they display them correctly and in order.

I can see Fast Queue being handy for those who use the queue, at least. I almost almost gave that one a switch on, because out of all these things to test, it sounds genuinely useful. Except then I remembered I don't really use the queue (I should. I used to, back in the day, but I fell out of the habit when I fell off tumblr for a bit). So it's pointless for me to test that one out right now.

Anyway, I immediately turned Tumblr Labs off again. I originally clicked into it to find out what they meant by testing out 'Communities', but found absolutely nothing on that Tumblr Labs page in reference to it, just this annoying list of unwanted features. 🤷‍♀️

All I want them to do right now is: fix all the text formatting nightmares I keep having with the app (does anyone else fight with italics/bold on mobile or is this more of an issue with my device?), figure out a solve for the porn bots that keep co-opting tags, and move their ad-free-for-30-minutes option to the top of the page (because I'm more likely to actually agree to it at the start of my browsing, rather than when I'm almost done and it'll cause a page refresh).

Also I signed on to desktop tumblr for the first time in a very long time the other day and boy is it ugly and cluttered just like FB and Twitter. They need to revert that nonsense back to favouring actual dashboard content ASAP.

Chapter Three: Reps

Owen met up with Axel at the gym to work out. They did medicine ball passes, but Owen couldn't focus. "Owen, I think it's a little late in our friendship for you to start building my self-esteem," Axel teased. Owen stopped and looked Axel in the eyes. "What's up with you? You've been weird ever since you ditched me at that party." Owen chewed his lip. "I don't have a brother," Owen whispered. Axel frowned and opened his mouth to apologize. "I—. Jeez, Owen. I'm sorry... I know how much it meant to you—." "I have two," Owen interrupted as a smile spread across his face. Axel punched Owen in the arm and laughed. "I met one of them at the party the other night. Get this... They're identical twins." Axel screwed up his face. "What?" "Twins? Don't you think that's gonna get a little messy?" Axel questioned. "They don't get along... And they don't know I'm their brother. I chased him down after the party and took him to get a kid's meal. Then, he slept over," Owen replied. Axel tapped Owen's calf, and they resumed their workout. "And you know what? When Thad woke up yesterday morning, he lingered around like he didn't want to leave. We had pizza, and I invited him to play rugby on Thursday, but I don't think he knows what that is." "Are you gonna tell him that you're brothers?" Axel asked. Owen shrugged. "Are you scared?" "Hell no, I'm not—. I mean, kinda... He doesn't seem like he's interested in having another brother, but he does need a friend," Owen whispered. Axel put the medicine ball back, and he messed up Owen's hair. "Wanna hit the showers?" Axel teased. "I think I wanna hit the treadmill," Owen answered. Axel extended a hand to Owen to help him up. He playfully pulled Axel down and embraced him. "You have class or something?" Axel smiled and settled into Owen's embrace. "Well, when you put it like that," Axel joked, "I can stay for another half hour." Owen smiled and let go of Axel, and they walked towards the treadmills. Axel kept pace at a light jog, but Owen cycled from a light jog to a sprint and back. Owen's brother strolled into the gym and got on the treadmill next to Owen. He had his headphones in, and Owen was focused on the people walking outside the window. Axel reached over and nudged Owen. "What? You caught a cramp or something?" Owen asked. When Axel didn't answer him, he turned. Axel pointed his eyes in Owen's brother's direction. Owen turned and nudged his brother. He pulled one of his earbuds out and looked at Owen. "Thad?" "Nuh-uh," Bart replied as he yanked off his hat. Owen slowed to a brisk walk. "Bart." He reached out and shook Owen's hand. "Owen. Guess I'm oh-for-two. I saw you at some of the track meet a week or two ago," Owen whispered. "What event?" Bart asked. "Four-hundred-meter dash and the hurdles. You're pretty fast. Axel, this is Bart. Remember him from the hurdles?" Owen asked. Axel nodded. "I've seen you too. Rugby, right?" Bart asked. Owen smiled and nodded. He was at a loss for words. He didn't expect to see Bart so soon after Thad. "Why'd you think I was Thad?" Axel wrinkled his forehead, and Owen cocked his head. "Because you guys are identical... And I just talked to him this weekend," Owen answered. He thought Bart was a little odd too, but maybe odd was okay. "Oh, well, that makes sense," Bart replied. They grew silent and went back to their workouts.

After half an hour, Axel went to class, leaving Owen alone with Bart. "Wanna get something to eat? Or do you have class?" Bart asked. Owen grabbed his gym bag. "I don't have class until late. I think the cafeteria is still serving breakfast," Owen suggested. Bart smiled, and they left the gym together. At first glance, Bart and Thad weren't that different from each other. Then again, Thad was drunk when they met. Bart was just trusting like this sober. Bart started talking to him as if they'd known each other forever. Some of what Bart was saying was a bit much, but Owen didn't mind. "I mean, if it were you and your mom, you wouldn't think it was weird if she dated... Would you?" Bart asked. "Uh... I don't really know my mom," Owen confessed. Bart stopped in his tracks, and there was silence. "I mean, she's still alive. I've just never—." "I should've thought about it before I spoke. I'm sorry," Bart apologized. Owen rubbed the back of his neck and shrugged it off. "No, I'm sorry. I can be a real airhead sometimes." "No, it's okay. It's no big deal," Owen whispered. Bart awkwardly offered Owen his other earbud. Owen took it just to be nice, but the music wasn't to his taste. Bart was quiet after that. Owen felt bad, so he playfully punched Bart. "You and your twin are some strange characters." "What do you know about my twin? Did he talk to you about me?" Bart asked. "Well, not really, no. I met Thad at a party this weekend, and we hung out. I think he was a little out of sorts," Owen explained. He held the door open for Bart as they walked into the cafeteria. They ordered and paid for breakfast, and Bart sat across from him at the table. They'd both ordered the same thing. Bart's phone vibrated, and he took his other earbud from Owen and answered his phone. "What do you want?" Bart snapped as he answered his phone. "You're gonna have to come and get it. I'm eating breakfast in the cafeteria... I didn't do it on purpose to make you late... And you say that like I asked to be roommates with you... Okay, I'll be here. Bye." Owen wiped his mouth and took a sip of his orange juice. "Was that your brother?" Owen asked. He knew the answer when he asked, but he felt the need to say something. "Yeah... Sometimes our stuff gets mixed up, and I grab his notes instead of mine. He gets all pissed off about it," Bart mumbled. Owen nodded and went back to eating his breakfast. He wasn't ready to be around his brothers all at once, so he rushed through breakfast and put his number in Bart's phone. Owen had to shower before class anyway.
