OMg your post about the TROP haters. A lot of people don't seem to remember that several actors SUED New Line because they used the actors' likeness to make merch without compensating them. It's so weird to be acting as if any of these companies were ever ethical to begin with. People are also way too forgiving of PJ&Co for the joke of the Hobbit movies. It's not all WB's fault that those films were trash and to forgive PJ of some of his creative choices (like those CGI wargs that he actually approved of) is ridiculous.

listen..... i feel like i'm removed enough from the pj trilogies at this point to forgive all their foibles. they've been around long enough for me to accept them, and i find even the twilight-looking cgi wargs rather charming at this point. but that's the thing!!! the mere-exposure effect means that familiarity often leads to liking a thing better. the problem arises when certain fans forget that this is how the whole thing started. i genuinely believe that if trop can stick the landing and deliver four good—and i do mean good, not life-changing, i'm talking borderline decent (remember the hobbit)—seasons that improve on the first, in 8-10 years people will change their tune and remember it fondly, much like how we've all decided the hobbit is pretty okay, actually. it's not perfect, but we've accepted it into our headcanons and it has details we fully embrace and have integrated into our little store of tolkien jewels. that's why i contend that tolkien fans will always move on and take umbrage with the new thing. in part, i think it's the nature of the thing: tolkien himself left gaps and made so many changes throughout the years and from one draft to the next, and fans have projected their preferences onto them. that is the beauty of middle-earth!! for all that pj was accused of trying to make the hobbit his cash cow, j.d. and patrick are now getting accused of the same. no doubt there'll be fans who hate the hunt for gollum for that very same reason, but that doesn't change the fact that if any fictional world is made for this kind of expansive worldbuilding, it's tolkien's!

i understand that we're all passionate about middle-earth and we want things done "properly," but guys... your sauron is showing. sometimes we have to sit down and realize that "the way i imagined it" isn't always going to be what we see onscreen. the books will always be there! fanworks that align with our personal idea of what we wanted to see will always be there! that doesn't mean we can't be critical and expect quality from the shows and films we watch, but oftentimes with trop "this is a narrative flaw" and "this goes against my preference" get so confused. and people get triggered because they care about the world so much, but that doesn't excuse rudeness or cruelty or straight-up attacking those who disagree.

forgetting the journey we've all taken with the pj films is a mistake. so much unpleasantness within the tolkien fandom could be fixed with a little more patience, a little more wisdom, a little more grace. which. y'know. if you love these books... it's kind of a central theme. unless what you're really into is the cold hard mechanics of the worldbuilding and the power fantasy of the one ring.

this is just my personal opinion, but if the effect lotr has on you is to make you a worse person on the internet? touch grass. do a reread.

More Reading Thoughts: A Long-Expected Party

There’s something so incredibly endearing about the slow, meandering beginning of LotR.

Even today—in a day and age when every author tries to grab you by the eyeballs in the first five words—Tolkien’s writing still has that gentle, irresistible draw that takes you by the hand and leads you slowly but surely into adventure. Something about a “birthday party of special magnificence” just appeals to all our inner children, I think; and the tiny mysteries, and the joy of a world of fantastical creatures living in peace and comfort, just adds to that. You want to go to Middle Earth, and you want to get lost in it. It’s like a lazy river at a water park; you wade in, get settled, and relax, and the next thing you know you’re far away from where you started.

All of that to say, Tolkien’s writing is goals and I aspire to be even a fraction of what this man was someday.

Anyway. To the bullet points!

Isn’t it hilarious how quick people are to begrudge one another their good fortune?? If Bilbo had been poor and died in a timely manner his neighbors would probably have liked him just fine, but he gets a lot of wealth and lives a long time and all the hobbits go >:-(

The brief paragraph of NOOO BAD WEATHER THE DAY BEFORE THE PARTY is honestly spectacular. It’s so nerve-wracking for just a second there—which is hilarious in light of the war and death and GIANT SPIDERS we’re going to read about. I think it has a flavor of Tolkien’s beliefs on eucatastrophe hidden in there—it’s not out of Bilbo’s own effort that the weather cleared up just in time for his party, it was just happy providence—but I’m too tired to write an essay about it right now.

I love that some of the toys are dwarven-made. That’s such a cool detail that makes the world seem both fantastical (because dwarves!) and real (because you can Amazon order toys from them!) at the same time.

The names of the fireworks!! Especially the ones that are onomatopoeia, like “backarappers”! It just makes brain go ✨✨✨

Notable difference here: in the movies, the big dragon firework was set off ahead of schedule by Merry and Pippin, and all the hobbits freak out. In the book, the big dragon firework is set off right on time to signal supper, and all the hobbits freak out (but are immediately pacified by food).

Small detail I’d like to see in more fanfics: “Bilbo had been specializing in food for many years, and his table had a high reputation.” Yes, the idea of Bilbo and Frodo eating like the bachelors they are is hilarious, BUT! We have textual evidence to the contrary! I don’t know if this line means that Bilbo was a magnificent cook himself or simply hired magnificent cooks, but either way, it’s canon that the Bag End bachelors ate like kings!

“The feast was so incredible that everyone was incredibly full and took home leftovers and no one bought any new groceries for weeks. The good news is that Bilbo had bought out all the grocery stores anyway, so it was fine.”

Why is the detail about the golden buttons on Bilbo’s waistcoat so enchanting to me?? I really think this chapter just activates the Inner Child Mode in my brain, and suddenly even something as simple as shiny buttons becomes beautiful and magical. Also it’s just a lovely way to paint a vivid picture in my mind.

I’m so glad they kept so many of the jokes in Bilbo’s speech for the movies 🤣 “PROUDFEET!!”

And now here we see Tolkien, author of the fantasy epic that has defined the genre for a century and counting, unironically using caps lock. Folks, you can’t make this crap up.

The sneaky way Tolkien says Bilbo vanished before he mentions the flash of light is Very Good and hints at the fact that there’s something else at work here

Incredible that the debate between Bilbo and Gandalf over the Ring takes up almost four pages, but it doesn’t feel like it. Excellent suspense.

I wonder where Gandalf is going “to bed”. It doesn’t look like he’s staying in Bag End, so did he get a room at an inn somewhere? Is he sleeping in his cart??

Also it’s implied later in the book that Gandalf the White doesn’t sleep. Inconsistency?? A slight untruth?? Secret powerup to Gandalf the White that we’ve overlooked??

The Untamed has a tonnn of long-form dramas which aren’t my favorites, but clearly well done if you like those more.

The adoptive family trope is a trope that is incredibly near and dear to my heart and weirdly underexplored in the LOTR fandom tbqh. You'd think there would be more of it. I get this question a lot and unfortunately I must repeat that my toxic trait is that I am incredibly picky when it comes to the fics I read, and that And the Stars Shine the Same was actually started in a blind rage after scouring the internet for anything like it, and finding that most of them over-simplified the healing process or grossly mischaracterized Elrond OR turned out to be romantic in the end (but like not in a good way). So unfortunately I have very few fics I can recommend.

In terms of well-written fic that you might like if you like my work, as always, I recommend pretty much anything @jaz-the-bard has written when it comes to Elrond & kidnap fam adjacent material (and just...good fic...in general...hngg). @potatoobsessed999 (potatoesanddreams on AO3) has some really lovely genfic, and I literally cannot recommend @idrilsscribe's Under Strange Stars series enough. The Ever-Fixed Star series is an incredible set of Elrond-adjacent (but mostly Feanorian-centric) fics by @eirianerisdar that deal with themes of forgiveness, family, redemption, and healing and they remain just about some of my favorite fics of all time <3 I also will continue to endlessly rec @thatfeanorian's All the Ways to Love which is not gen, but does include just really excellent Russingon slowburn trauma recovery re: Feanor is The Worst Dad Ever and Maedhros' self-esteem is a dumpster fire, and Fingon is Best Boy (of course!).

For other fandoms I recently blitzed through I've Been Holding Back Tears (While You're Throwing Back Beers) by im_your_mom_now which is just unabashed Peter Parker AU whump with Tony being a very worried and concerned adult (trying to be a worried and concerned adoptive dad but of course it's Tony and he's emotionally constipated so he's not going to outright admit that he feels like Peter is his son which is just CHEFS KISS) It's actually incredibly well written -- like I don't normally go for Marvel anything but I just couldn't resist. It hit all my sweet spots for me and I really am a softie for Dad!Tony with Peter. <3 It's incredibly anti aunt-May though, fair warning.

What is the main lesson of your story (e.g. kindness, diversity, anti-war), and why did you choose it? The main lesson of the book is the consequences of choice. The world begins because a spirit is lonely and chooses to look for and create a partner. And from their relationship, comes the gods and the worlds. The Earth Mother chooses create a guardian out of Yggdrasil's wood, and to give them the mission to protect the tree and life within in. The moon chooses to engage with a mortal king, despite knowing the consequences, and chooses to keep their daughter, choosing to send her to the mortal realm to be kept safe. There's a routinely ingrained idea of choice, of choosing to be kind and to help others despite knowing it'll end in tragedy and heartbreak, choosing to be good, choosing to continue a never-ending cycle of death and rebirth to perform the duties you were assigned even when the person who gave them is long since dead.

What did you use as inspiration for your worldbuilding (like real-life cultures, animals, famous media, websites, etc.)? Mix of cool things I've found on Pinterest, mix of Princess Mononoke/Maleficent, mix of Nordic ad Greek mythologies, mix of cool movie scenes I've watched, and also some sprinkled LOTR and Eragon in there.

What is your MC trying to achieve, and what are you, the writer, trying to achieve with them? Do you want to inspire others, teach forgiveness, help readers grow as a person? My MC simply wants to go home, and live a quiet and peaceful life with her adoptive parents. But she's been cursed to die and be reborn, over and over and over, to fight the antagonist in every life, to meet a tragic end by their hands or her own hands. I'm not particularly trying to teach anything, I saw this story played out in a dream and I think I owe it to my MC to tell her story.

How many chapters is your story going to have? It's an epic high fantasy, so somewhere between 30-40, maybe more. Only Gods know. I don't.

Is it fanfiction or original content? Where do you plan to post it? It's original content! It's posted over here on Wattpad , because I have a soft spot for that abomination website since I started using it when I was a teenager.

When and why did you start writing? When I was a little girl, my mom used to sit with me at night and read faerytales for me to fall asleep. Eventually we ran out of faerytales in the library, so we had to start making up our own and writing them down. I was maybe 2, so I learned to write by tracing the letters she wrote into paper with my finger. Once I got hold of a notebook and pencil, I started writing stories on my own. We've been here since.

Do you have any words of engagement for fellow writers of Writeblr? What other writers of Tumblr do you follow? Legitimately, no idea. I kind of just got here. If I could give anyone writing any advice, it'd be to just get it all down on paper as best you can- form a habit of writing, little by little, and it'll add up to a lot. Don't worry about cliches, don't worry about plot holes or rewriting, or you'll get caught up in an endless cycle of self-doubt and rewriting, and never progress. Let your writing be self-indulgent, let it be over the top, and let it be ridiculous. You'll have a lot more fun that way. || I follow uh, pretty much anyone I see in my notes often, tbh. 🕯️was there a fic that was really hard on you to write, or took you to a place you didn’t think it would take you?

oh my god. cat. it wasn't hard but it took me all sorts of places i never anticipated. i said it in the notes on chap 1 but it was supposed to be like 500 words and just.... became a thing of its own. if i remember correctly (big if, because i cannot for the life of me find the original convo) it started as the chunk of chap 3 where the cat gets named! i think it's my finest posted work to date tbh.

fun fact, i nearly named the cat gandalf, which is why it's gray! i changed my mind bc i had just made an lotr joke in a different post and was worried about sounding redundant.

💞what’s the most important part of a story for you? the plot, the characters, the worldbuilding, the technical stuff (grammar etc), the figurative language

this is so interesting to me bc it's different as a writer and as a story consumer (whether it's reading or watching a movie or listening to a song or Whatever.)

as a writer, aside from cat and now we just sway (which is not dead but is definitely in limbo 😭 the draft for the final chapter is horrifically long and nowhere near done and sway is my baby so it has to be perfect), plot isn't a big factor in much i do. i really struggle with it HJKFHSJKHDF- worldbuilding too, omg. idk how yall do this stuff.

i think characterization and technical quality are about the same- if i don't feel like they're just about perfect, it ain't getting posted, HJSKDFHJSDK. directly after that is figurative language bc i rely realllllly heavily on Emotion to make my stories go due to the lack of plot and structure, so if my figurative language isn't doing it's thing the chances of a fic landing the way i want are slim.

as a consumer tho!!! it's characters. 100%. with good characters i can forgive most sins. give me characters with some life in them and i will fill in all other gaps in my mind HJDSKFHKJSD

So I saw this post on @fellowshipofthefics the other day, and although this isn’t TH/LOTR, I wanted to give it a try to dust off the cobwebs that have been accumulating on my laptop and get my writing muscles warmed up and working again.

I decided to reverse a scene I wrote initially as a stand alone drabble, which I then included in my actual fic, Words Unspoken Part 1, this time writing it from the lovely Dawn’s POV.

I so love writing scenes between Dawn and Anders and it felt really good to write this today. I hope you enjoy!!

You Make Me Smile (Dawn’s POV)

Anders was in one of the worst moods Dawn could recall in her years of working for him. It seemed like every two seconds he was sighing loudly or mumbling a string of curses under his breath, and she did her best to ignore him despite how distracting it was. After arguing with each other for a very wasteful amount of time, she decided to simply stop talking to him, no longer having the patience to deal with him today.

The week had been a hellish one, she couldn't deny that, and just when one fire had been put out with a major client, another one sprung up and took off out of control. She had to give Anders credit though, he was working the hardest she'd ever seen him in trying to smooth things over, using his most diplomatic voice to coax their clients back from the point of no return, resulting in most of them going out of their way to thank JPR even though it had been their fault in the first place as to why the shit-storm had ensued. Dawn would always marvel at his ability to talk his way out of a mess, and so often she found herself wondering how he managed to even make her forgive him so easily for his antics…

"Where do you think you're going?" she asked as Anders strolled past her desk with his keys, phone and wallet in hand. Annoyance washed over her again, and she folded her arms across her chest but quickly uncrossed them, feeling like she was scolding a toddler and not her boss.

"I just need a coffee, Dawn-"

"No, Anders. If you walk out that door you simply won't come back and I refuse to deal with this mess you've created on my own!" She ran her hands through her hair and placed her elbows on her desk, looking up to see Anders release a grumble instead of what she was sure would be a slew of other things he wanted to say, turning on his heel to stalk back to his side of the office.

"I was going to get you a latte!" he shouted, and Dawn winced as he loudly dropped his keys and phone back down on the glass top of his desk.

Taking a deep breath and smoothing out her usually polished bob, she straightened herself again in her chair and placed her fingers over the keyboard, pausing when she realized that he damn well wasn't going to get coffees, his intentions simply on himself and this latte that was intended for her no doubt an imaginary one.

His phone rang loudly and Dawn cringed at who it could be or what possible disaster would unfold next. She listened as he shortly greeted the caller, smacking herself in the forehead in fear he just made whatever bad situation it was worse, and held her breath in waiting.

Without seeing Anders through the brick wall that separated their parts of the office, she could hear him relax, his voice softening as he spoke, the relief he clearly felt resonating through to her as well. His chuckle drifted through the office, and Dawn released the air she had been holding, silently thanking you and your perfect timing.

Since Anders had met and started dating you, Dawn had noticed the best change in him. He was happy- most of the time- and whenever he ended a call with you or came into work in the morning after spending a night together, the spring in his step appeared extra enthusiastic and full of hope and love.

She smiled to herself as she continued to listen to you lift his spirits, knowing that as much as he drove her mad most days, she simply wanted the best for her boss. Over the years he had become like a very annoying brother to her, even more so now that she was dating his actual brother, and it made her heart swell at seeing the good things you managed to bring out in him. Just the other night her and Ty had been laying in bed discussing how wonderful it was to see Anders find someone who clearly had feelings for him, and he so obviously, but unknowingly, reciprocated. They had seen him go through so much, and Dawn felt she witnessed more than anyone the toll that some of the situations he had been through with his family took on him.

Her grin grew when she heard Anders speak with surety, the contentment in his voice wafting over; "You make me smile," he paused, and Dawn could picture the calm and comforted look on his face. She shook her head slightly and went to focus again on her work, but sputtered out a cough from shock when she heard him continue. "...also super horny, but that's not the point."

He would never change that much, she reminded herself as her fingers flew across the keyboard, the sound of the keys drowning out whatever perverted thing would come out of his mouth next. Regardless of his crass ways, it was easy for her to recognize that Anders was feeling things he never had before.

Much to her gratitude, Anders stayed in a better mood for the remainder of the day despite it not being all sunshine and rainbows, allowing them both to get done most of what they needed to without any added stress.

Anders seemed drained when he finally peeled himself out of his chair and away from his desk, rubbing his free hand over his stubbled face as he sauntered by her desk, giving her a look as if he was silently asking her permission to call it quits for the day.

She rolled her eyes and before he reached the door she stopped him.

"Anders..."

He halted and slowly turned to face her, hesitation seeping from him. "Yes, Dawnsie?"

"I'm happy for you," she stated genuinely, her head tipping to the side with a faint smile crossing her lips as she watched him take her words in.

One corner of his mouth turned up, making the dimple on that side of his face deepen further, and he pushed his tongue against the inside of his cheek and squinted his eyes at her. "What does that mean?"

"Nothing!" she quickly replied, her hair swinging as she shook her head and looked back at her screen, trying not to giggle at his ignorance toward the situation she knew was blossoming in his heart.

"Whatever you say, Dawn!" he said with his eyebrows flying high on his forehead in a tone that alluded to him thinking she was crazy, and he made his way toward the door again. "Make sure you go home to your loverboy soon. Him and his tight shorts will be missing you."

She huffed as she thought of the things she still had left to do before she could even consider going home, and as soon as Anders had walked out the door, he stepped back in again.

"Oh, and Dawn?" His head popped around the door and she looked up to see his face screwed up in a struggle to get his words out. "Thanks for everything."

The door closed and she sat back in her chair, thanking whatever god and unearthly power had brought you into his life, your presence in it making Anders more tolerable with each day.

Sure! That sounds like a ton of fun. This might be a long one tho. Mind you, this is not the finished version of the answer. I'd like to link stuff and add a cut, but rn that's not possible. I'll update it when I can.

Let's go alphabetically bc why not.

Alistair:

Sweet guy. So sweet. There was a moment when I was hard pressed chosing between him and Zevran (alas, Zevran won). Also, he's weirdly tall according to the wiki? How did I not notice that before?

Let's get a bit more serious now, Alistair is a great guy. The only reason he's not the hero of the story is because he doesn't want to. He has all the qualities of a leader: he's good at dealing with conflict (as evident with the conversation with the mage at the beginning. He gets where he wants to get without antagonizing the mage, but without allowing him to trample all over him). He's a solid tactitian and knows how to make allies (he suggests to use the Grey Warden treaties, after all). I bet if he was in the leadership position, he'd even not bicker with Morrigan. His moral code is pretty tight; some might say too tight, but I think it's less about the moral code and more about learning to judge people by their actions, not by the labels they fit into (Morrigan is a proud apostate and therefore bad. Wynne is a humble circle mage and therefore good). He also has a bit of a black-and-white way of seeing the world. I empathize a lot with Alistair, especially with his experience with the Chantry and his subsequent reluctance to deal with it. I really wish I had gotten to know more about concrete experiences he had during his training as templar, but he seems reluctant to talk about it (gee, I wonder why).

Since I've only played the game once, I haven't really picked up on Arl Eamon's abuse towards him, which apparently exists (Isolde, however... I mean, even if he were Eamon's illegitimate son, he's a kid, ma'am, he didn't exactly get to chose his parents. So that's so not okay). Alistair's way of speaking about them both, however, is either sign that he has not come within a hundred miles of acknowledging how much it hurt him, or that he's already gone through the whole process and has decided to forgive them. The latter shows a very strong character; yes, he relies on the approval and leadership of others, he has his issues, but he's already started working on them.

That being said, irl Alistair would be like a little brother to me. I'd tease him relentlessly (all in good fun and I promise to stop if it makes him uncomfortable, but he's just so teasable). I still wish the videogame gave him the chance to take important decisions for himself. But that, of course, would somewhat defeat the point of the game.

Leliana:

Another sweet, sweet person. Her singing voice is amazing. Her belief in the Maker inspires me (I'm a religious person and seeing religious characters represented in a positive light is Very Cool. It's also sometimes a source of discomfort, because the Church has done a lot of very messed up stuff and positive representation can sometimes veer into apologetics for things that should not be excused, but that's a whole other can of worms. The bottom line is that religious characters sometimes work for me and other times don't and Leliana works for me very much bc she's an outsider inside the Chantry).

Leliana is best friend material, tbh. I'd love to get to know her irl, discuss theology and philosophy and maybe even politics? She makes mistakes and has prejudices, but, tbh, so do I. And I do get the feeling that she tries her best to learn. From the times she intervenes in a conversation between the Warden and an NPC, she shows herself to be compassionate and open to the needs of others. What I get from her character is that she genuinely wants to help, which is something that I adore of her. I suspect that she sometimes has a hard time deciding wether she's a good person or not. She has killed and seduced and worked for a morally dubious person, and she doesn't show the same nonchalance about it as Zevran (though they both do discuss their line of work in very... professional terms). This is, however, more of a headcanon than actual factual canon.

I also very much enjoy her girly side, like her interest in shoes and dresses. She's one badass woman who also looses her cool about the latest fashions in Val Royeaux. I like that. Between her and Alistair, a non human noble Warden has as good a help to navigate the Fereldan court as they're going to get. Leliana is also, I can't forget that, clever and insightful. It'd be easy to write her off as the innocent chantry girl, but she's so much more than that. Her kindness is paired with foresight, I think. She knows that taking on the trouble to help now can go a long way in the future. I just have a lot of respect for her.

Loghain:

This one's gonna be short bc I didn't recruit him. He's an amazing villain and would probably be a great Warden as well. He reminds me of Denerhor from LOTR; once a hero/stewart of his people, ambition and desperation have driven them both down a terrible path. I have also only little idea about his past. People say he lost a lot, and I believe it wholeheartedly; it doesn't excuse the fact that he plunged the country into a civil war in the middle of a Blight. I don't have a lot of sympathy for short-sighted politicians. I wish he hadn't made himself regent. That's what I take away from his character.

Edit: One thing I forgot to mention that really impressed me was his death. I had Alistair duel him (that was a rough duel), and then it kinda just jumped to a cutscene of my Warden nodding and Alistair executing him. That didn't sit well with me. I didn't want to kill Loghain, and less so in front of Anora. But what impressed me was that Loghain just accepted it. That takes a whole lot of guts. Compare that to Howe's death, and how he screams out that he deserved (more, probably, or anything but death) and it's crystal clear who the more noble of the two is. Loghain strikes me as very lawful neutral, and any neutral alignment has the particularity that it can be dragged towards good or bad, sometimes without the characters noticing it (which is interesting from a DnD perspective; neutral is often concieved of as just as stable as good or evil, but that may not be true. But that's a different post). Anyway, Loghain's death was impactful.

Morrigan:

I could kick myself for not maxing out her approval in the first play-through. I got to enjoy a bit of her friendship by the end of it and boy was even that little bit worth it. Friendship with Morrigan is something that is hard-won. It's all the more precious because of that.

Morrigan is full of paradoxes, I think. She's incredibly wise in some ways, yet also very short-sighted (”just kill them, don't solve their problems”. Morrigan, dear, I'm not going to gain a lot of allies if I kill everybody who poses a problem to me). She is so intelligent, but emotionally... not so. She knows so much about some things, and very little about the next. She's incredibly wilful and knows what she wants, but follows Flemeth's orders all the time through. She hungers for power and independence, yet craves closeness, but won't allow herself to have it. She asks you to prove yourself to her and is extremely critical of your actions, I think, because she's afraid. She bites the hand that feeds her because it might hit her next.

Like with Eamon, I haven't managed to catch the undercurrent of abuse that seems to permeate Flemeth's relationship with Morrigan. Except there are signs, because there must be something Morrigan is scared of and who has instilled all that rage in her, and that's Flemeth. Also, she clearly hates/does not care about her and wants her dead (unless killing Flemeth was part of Flemeth's plan as well? Hm.)

Morrigan is that one person who you are nice to, continuously, because nobody else is. And suddenly she becomes less cold. And then friendly. And suddenly you're asking yourself why everybody hates her, because she's a really good friend! I just wish the other companions came to a similar conclusion, especially Alistair and Wynne.

Oghren:

They did this man dirty. He has such great lines and I'm convinced he was a great person before Branka disappeared. He has that dwarven warrior spirit, and while he looks like Gimli, some of his most impactful lines remind me of Dwalin or even Thorin Oakenshield himself. He could be so noble had he gotten some character development, damnit!

Oghren as he is written is somewhat disgusting. I hate the lechering comments and the drunkenness. And still, I don't hate him because of those amazing lines he has when he's actually sober. It's frustrating and I'll give him that character development myself if the game won't. I strongly associate the song Whiskey Lullaby with him, bc that's how he would have ended up if the Warden hadn't taken him along (warning: the song talks about suicide and alcoholism). Like I said, they could have done such cool things with his character. As he is written now... it's just sad. Moments of lucidity drowned in alcohol and creepy jokes. As you can see, I don't blame the character for either. The alcoholism happens all too often irl. The creepy jokes... I put that one on the writers' tab.

I actually think Oghren could have been a great mentor figure (I know, I shock myself as well sometimes). Next to the Grey Wardens, the ones who know most about fighting darkspawn are the dwarves because they have to deal with them constantly. Especially a warrior caste dwarf like Oghren could have brought a lot of that invaluable knowledge to the team, especially since there are no Grey Wardens in Ferelden but two extremely green recruits. Next, you get the chance to give Oghren the command of the teammates you leave behind in the battle of Denerim with the reason that he has lead men into battle before. Where did that suddenly come from? Oghren should have been right up there telling my Warden that they were doing this wrong, that they needed more food (and booze) and a confident leader to keep the armies they've called together going. Oghren should have been able to tell my civilian city elf who got recruited into the Grey Wardens a six months ago how one leads an army. How one presents oneself to inspire confidence, how one doesn't crack under the pressure, how one gets the leaders of said armies (some who hate each others guts i.e. Dalish elves and humans) to work together. And, last but not least, Oghren could have had a great story about grief. This is a man who has lost most of what made him (and what he hasn't lost he's spilling down the drain with every mug of ale). This is a man who, if you take him into the Deep Roads, has to see what his wife did to his family, how his wife got absolutely obsessed, and can be forced to kill said wife or watch her die. All Wardens loose their home and families at the start of the story. It would really have rounded the whole narrative out if the Warden and Oghren could have recognised their grief in each other and hashed it out somehow. Such as it is, Oghren is a depressed drunkard and there is nothing we can do about that. I find that frustrating.

Rascal (a.k.a. Dog):

Best boy. 100/10. I wish we had gotten to see the reaction of the different origins to the mabari (because elves probably have a whole different experience with them from mages or humans. And dwarves just... I think they straight up have none? XD). Other than that, no complaints. The name Rascal was the one I gave my dog because you have to be a right rascal to survive what he did and play the pranks he plays. Smartest breed in the world indeed.

Shale:

Shale is one of those characters that I recruited rather late in the game, so I haven't had the chance to explore their personality and worldview, really. I didn't even get to take them to the Deep Roads (this will be ammended in playthrough nr. 2). As such, I don't have particularly strong opinions on them (or her? The wiki refers to Shale as 'it', but that sounds weird). But, because I know so little about Shale, I have a lot of questions. First, what were they like before they were a golem? Shayle, as she was called then, was the best warrior of her time if I remember correctly. Why did she become a golem? Was it to be able to eternally protect her people? Was the sarcasm the golem Shale exhibits also part of the dwarven warrior Shayle or did that come later (if for thirty years you have nobody to talk to but yourself, you better be entertaining. And I can imagine how it could make somebody terribly jaded as well).

Next, how attached is Shale to their golem form, exactly? According to the banter, they infinitely prefer it to a squishy fleshy form. If that is the case, however, why go to Tevinter to try and become a squishy dwarf again? It's not like that process could be reversed if they wanted to become a golem again; if Shale survives to the end of the game, the Anvil of the Void is destroyed and Caridin is dead. Was the whole spiel about their indestructible form a façade? It might have been, but not because Shale actually disliked their form. I think it would have more to do with the loss of their memories and with the very invasive experiments and alterations of Shale's body made by the mage Wilhelm. The loss of memories means that Shale is unable to remember life as a fleshy creature. They might be deflecting by pretending that they didn't care for that experience anyway because of the superiority of their golem form. The modifications made to their form by Wilhelm would have alienated them from their body. In light of this, it's significant that Shale asks the Warden to decorate their form with crystals.

All of this is, of course, pure speculation. I may have easily missed or forgotten details that would disprove the above thoughts. All in all, I like Shale and I hope we meet them again in DA4 (given that it's mostly set in Tevinter). It's a liking from a respectful distance, because Shale is tall and made out of rock and also way more experienced than I will ever be (they are literally the oldest member of the Warden's little Blight fighting squad).

Sten:

Sten is another person I'd keep a respectful distance from physically. That seems to be the what he would prefer, at least. I've enjoyed his character a lot, especially because he seems pretty clear-cut at first, but slowly lets the nuance of his person show (gruff and stoic, but then he has an eye for art, a sweet tooth and he likes cute animals). It's also very interesting that there's no moment when you learn "the truth" about him the way you do with Zevran or Leliana. There's no big reveal about his life under the Qun before coming to Ferelden. He says he was sent to monitor the Blight, but honestly? If neither Ferelden nor Orlais knew there was a Blight, how could the Qunari know? I think he's lying, and he takes his secrets back with him when he leaves Ferelden. And yet I think I know him enough to say that a Warden who has become friends with him has nothing to fear from Sten.

One thing I find very interesting about Sten is how he thinks. His conversation about how women can't be soldiers has been analysed a lot on this page I think. He seems to be arguing based on a different paradigma than the one the Warden has. He also seems to have a very clear-cut view of the world. What is fascinating to me is that, when arguing with the Warden and learning about their culture, he is not necessarily becoming more lax about his worldview. I think it's more likely that he is expanding his paradigma, the structure of thought through which he understands the world. I don't think that he is now convinced that women can be warriors as well. I think he rather understands that, in Ferelden, the relationship between occupation and gender is different than under the Qun. Which of the two he thinks is more right or more agreeable, I have no idea. I'm also not very interested in that. But I find it fascinating how he always seems to be looking on quietly, gathering data, classifying it and trying to fit it into his understanding of how the world works. I wouldn't be surprised at all if his original party was a scouting party to see how vulnerable Ferelden was at that moment to outside forces. One thing I don't understand with all of this is why he urges the Warden to meet the Blight head on. No smart soldier would suggest that, except if they are foolishly proud (and Sten doesn't seem like that kind of guy tbh). I get that the Warden takes way longer to gather allies than expected because they first have to solve all of their allies' problems. But surely Sten sees the need to have allies? Is he just that impatient? Does he have a death wish (à la, I lost my sword and am without honour, better to die sooner than later and in glorious battle)? Was he his group's previous commander and is he now having trouble following somebody else's orders? Or maybe it's his way to make sure the Warden knows what they are doing? To push them into becoming the self-assured commander their allies will need once they're all gathered? I really don't know. I like the last option best, however.

For me, Sten is my fellow, more experienced soldier. Like Alistair, he can potentially be the Warden's brother in arms, but he's definitely the older brother here. He probably doesn't take kindly to tearful confessions of how hard everything is, but I feel like he's otherwise a solid rock to lean on. I feel like the Warden can trust him to do what is necessary and count on him no matter what, especially after they get his sword back. His devotion from that point on is honestly so powerful.

Wynne:

Wynne was such a support for my Warden (except with the whole conversation about love vs. duty and that she may have to choose between Zevran and ending the Blight and that she should therefore break up with him. Wynne had a point. Astala was so not willing to sacrifice her relationship with Zevran. But the whole conversation came at a point where she was already so disillusioned that she blew up in Wynne's face (”can i please just have one (1) nice thing????”)). But all in all, Wynne is great.

She has a lot of flaws. She was very marked by her life in the Cricle and, for all her age, she has little experience living outside of it. She is also a conformist despite her strong moral core. In a way, her ability to find peace with her lot in life impresses me deeply because it speaks to a lot of strength of character. Sadly, however, strength can be ill applied and used to suppress. I think she has convinced herself that the Chantry is right under (almost) all circumstances to be able to rationalize the life that mages live. She's had her son taken away from her as a baby and an apprentice killed. Her reaction seems to have been to convince herself that this was right, or for the greater good (and now I'm thinking about the Guardian's question at the temple of Andraste's Ashes; are you wise or do you just repeat what others have told you? The answer is not as clear-cut as it might be). This is why she is so irritated by Zevran and Morrigan. By aligning herself with the Chantry, she is, in her eyes, good. Zevran and Morrigan are not; they do not conform to Chantry morality and they defend themselves tooth and nails against somebody who would try and convert them. This is something Wynne never allowed herself to do; she always did the "right" thing and it has cost her so much. I'm not saying she was right (it would probably have done her some good to rebel from time to time, and to trust her own gut instinct more), but in light of this, it hardly surprises me that she's so judgamental. She has to be, or she would be forced to confront all the evil she has not fought against all those years and all the hurt that has been caused to her by the very institution she protects (and thank God she only tries to argue and can appreciate it when people have found a good life outside of her comfort zone. If she tried to convince by force or, for example, drag her former apprentice back to the Circle... boy oh boy that would get ugly). If you think about it, Wynne really is a good example for what happens if you live by a philosophy of always choosing the lesser evil.

Something that I keep forgetting over her grandmotherly and dignified character is how damn powerful she is. She has escaped the carnage at Ostagar; HOW!? She protected those mage apprentices in the Circle tower for God knows how long. In the battle of Denerim, she wades through an army and comes out alive on the other side. The wiki lists her age at 40, I think, but that doesn't make a lick of sense unless 75 years of age are the Fereldan equivalent to 100. This lady, about whom people make grandmother jokes, did all that. It's impressive.

Zevran:

You know, I would really love to know what Wynne thinks about the events at Kirkwall in DA2. It might be a disaster for her, or it might pave the way for one last bit of character development. She certainly didn't want to return to the Circle after fighting the Blight. That may be an indicator of some change in her stance on the Circle of Magi.

Edit: I forgot that she is what the Circle considers a literal abomination! Holy cow, how could I forget that?? Anyway, her conversation about what being an abomination means is so... heartbreaking, actually. It's so tentative. So careful. "Am I an abomination? Am I the same thing that has killed my students? The same thing as Uldred? Am I lost and damned? Did I invite this spirit in? Is this my fault?" Like wow, Wynne is going through something huge right there. I love it. I have to continue playing the game to see what it ends up as, but it's fascinating and such a huge thing that she allows the Warden in on that.

Ah, Zevran, my beloved (he has stolen my heart so much it's not even funny anymore). He's funny, he's charming, he's so so loyal and it breaks my heart. Zevran is the one about whom I've read most meta: these three wonderful posts for instance, as well as this one about his possible lack of scars, and this one about his lack of freedom. All of these have influenced my opinion of him and they are great reads.

I have talked about Zevran with you before, so I'll just skip to the new stuff. I have come to conclusion that Zevran is an artist at heart. This is totally not biased by the fact that I also do art, but hear me out. One of his preferred gifts are bars of silver and gold. While those have the obvious utility of basically functioning as money (they can be sold to any silversmith or goldsmith and their value is pretty stable through time and in different countries), there's also this from his codex: "Zevran shows an affinity for the finer things in life—hardly surprising for an Antivan Crow—but his appreciation can be more poetic than he lets on. A simple bar of refined silver or gold, uncomplicated by a craftsman's hammer, is elegantly valuable." Tell me that is not an artist's eye that sees that gold and sees the beauty in it. Then, there's also the meta about Zevran the Seducer which I linked above and link here again. It talks specifically about how he lets himself enjoy the target and be seen in his enjoyment. Tell me that is not an artist's eye that beholds the beauty of something he is set out to destroy. Even his talk about his assassinations show this. He talks about it as an art, the way somebody would talk about the brutal intervention in stone that produces a sculpture. Yes, it's a rationalization of the act of killing and yes killing is still wrong. But he doesn't go on about it on a moral tangent the way Alistair or Wynne would (”this person was bad, killing them was necessary”) or even through the argument of survival like Morrigan would (”it was either them or me and it sure as Hell wasn't going to be me”). He talks about the pleasure of a job well done, of the satisfaction of striking the precise point and executing a plan to the perfection so as to minimize chances of discovery and to make a clean death possible. And pleasure in seeing and in doing, this I firmly believe, is absolutely fundamental for an artist.

My favourite part about my Warden and Zevran as a pairing is that Zevran precisely brings out that ability to take your pleasures as they come and to really savour them. Fighting the Blight is tough; it's so important to find good things amidst the chaos to stay sane. If Astala saves Zevran from himself by offering him a place to stay and a purpose, Zevran saves Astala from herself by keeping her from running herself into the ground trying to save the world.

There are some things I don't like about Zev. The incessant flirting, for example, sometimes makes me uncomfortable (it becomes enjoyable for me once the Warden and him are in a relationship, but before that? Nah, no thanks). I wish he would also leave the other female characters alone (and there's so many more shameless comments of his aimed at Morrigan, Leliana or Wynne than at Alistair or maybe even Sten).

AAAAND another one of my mad AUs

Music? On and rocking Courage? Mustered Dignity? Already waved her goodbye OK i’m ready. Apparently summer, having to study for exams i dislike and most of all reading nice books that send me in hyperfixation with the characters give me IDEAS™. After some time spent convincing myself to do it i’ve finally read The Three Musketeers and having loved it to FOLLY, i CLEARLY devoured also Twenty Years After and started the Viscount  of Bragelonne (Athos, i love you, but we’re not talking of you, forgive me my man). This new obsession tonight coupled with my ever present love for LOTR and Silm and since APPARENTLY heat goes up to my head, i thought:

Ok, here we have Aramis, ridiculously always good looking, even at like... 20 years from the first time we meet him he is THE SAME AS ALWAYS and in the Viscount for the little i know for now he didn’t age much either, Devilishly good with horses AND swords (eggrazziearcazzo, you may say, he’s a MUSKETEER) with almost ZERO impulse control (Athos works as impulse control for them, actually) but GREAT cold blood, can apparently sing quite well, some disregard for rules and some great agility and effort in actually always managing to break one of two of those and... oh look, all the boxes check and hear me out. Aramis. Being. MAGLOR FEANORION!!  I talked about this with my darling @tairin, my nice sis who i love and thank very much for being always there to hear me rambling about my obsessions and not having killed me yet. And she is even more of a genius than i suspected! (@joachimnapoleon​ please don’t kill us) She made me give a second check to who ELSE checked all the boxes and here, the illumination.  Good looking Incredible with horses Apparently skilled in verses/songs Devilish with a sword some disregard for rules NOT imposed by himself Joachim Murat. Being Maglor Feanorion.

Guys i just needed to vent out a bit. We can’t find my cat. we looked into the house, outside, all over the sort-of-village where i live (i live in the country) and we can’t find it. Does any of you have an idea of why a cat can be disappeared in such a way? I just know that a moment she was inside and the other she was nowhere to be seen. I just needed to vent out a bit ‘cause i think i’m panicking just as much as before when we where actively looking for her. Do you have any idea of why a cat can just... fly and boh... i don’t even know if she actually is outside the house, even if i looked everywhere in. She’s injured under her neck, she had a dermatitis that we can’t manage to heal, even if she is way better than some months ago. sorry, just some venting out i don’t know how to cope with this

“Dumbed down Wrecker”. How exactly do you dumb down someone who was already a meat-headed idiot in his introductory story arc? That’s like getting to the center of the earth and still digging.

Hi Anon!

Hope your week is going well!

So, I personally love this because, honestly, I felt the same way for a really long time. Wrecker is not my favorite Bad Batcher. He will never be my favorite. I do still appreciate what he brings to the group as a whole, however.

What might that be?

The Bad Batch arc in Season 7 of Clone Wars gives some great subtle examples. I'll highlight a few and if you happen to catch this post, maybe it's food for thought. Maybe someone else catches it and gives it a look. Whoever does, I totally understand if you want to consider him a meat-head afterward, because that's the stereotype he was given.

So, without further ado (and forgive me for the length), we're introduced to this massive tank who takes off his helmet and has clearly been given a cybernetic eye because he's had some war damage. He's big and loud and immediately it's just "Here we go" *eye roll* with even Kix and Jesse being all "Oy vey..." Wrecker makes his presence known and by telling them about fighting Yalbecs or about how he likes to demolish things.

It goes further when he starts laughing like a maniac as the transport's going down. (Which is surprising because he's afraid of flying in BB???? Anyway)

By this point, he had already annoyed me and I wanted nothing to do with him because his meat-head character annoyed me.

When I watched it again, however, things start to change when he saves Cody.

Wrecker knows what he's capable of and what his responsibilities to his team are which he gladly participates in. He easily moves the LAAT/i, saves the Marshall Commander, and has enough knowledge to know exactly when the LAAT/i will explode. He knows exactly how long he has before an explosion goes off. Right after this, he picks up a piece of the LAAT/i and protects his team. He swiftly follows orders and does so with a bit of finesse at times. Wrecker is dutiful to his place within the team even when it loses him a fight in the command tower. It's him who stays at the bottom to clean up and while he's understandably sad (because ALL the clones are shown to love killing clankers) he still follows the orders Hunter gives. He puts his team's needs above his needs, desires, or wants. He knows what he has to do, and he does it as the anchor position he's been given. He doesn't question or wonder, and though he may seem like a meathead when he overrides Tech trying to hack a door by breaking it down, he tells Tech he's taking too long. There is a platoon coming, they are on limited time and they can't wait around for Tech to hack in. Wrecker knows there's urgency and he steps in to help where and when he can. He makes sure that his team (and Jesse as the story progresses) are behind him as they infiltrate the cyber center. He knows where they are at all times and he places himself as a barrier between the incoming droids and the rest of his team as they escape. (This he does a few times. When Crosshair shows up with the ship at the Cyber Center, Wrecker's the last one on. As they go into the containment room where Echo was kept, Wrecker's last. Later on, he's the last one down, putting out bombs after they save Echo)

When Tech is flying the ship onto Skako Minor, it's Wrecker that charges headfirst to the cockpit to help Tech navigate and land in tricky weather. (Again, he's strangely not afraId of crashing like he suddenly is in BB)

Once on Skako Minor, and once they've freed Echo, it's Wrecker who comes up with the plan to get everyone up into the ventilation shaft (by throwing them). It's Wrecker who comes up with the plan to destroy the Segway crew's science experiment by blowing it up. (Which again, he has to know explosion times and the only reason he's pulled up so quickly is the purple lightning attack)

Lastly, there's what I consider the best parts of Wrecker: his concern and care for his own brothers. You see his little rivalry with Crosshair begin in the previous episode, but it's in the second episode that you see how much Wrecker loves his team. When Clone Force starts hinting they think Echo is a trap and Crosshair gets under Rex's skin so Rex punches him, it's immediately Wrecker who steps in and protects his brother. (Grabbing Rex by the scruff and all) He knows his size, and he knows it's his job to protect his brothers (being the tank/anchor he is.)

Also, I tend to think that it's Crosshair he's the closest two. Sure, they banter, but that's what siblings do. In much of the four episodes, it's Wrecker and Crosshair that seem to be near each other (like when he stopped Rex from attacking him, or in the hallway in the Techno Union facility) More to this point, when they're on the pipes and Crosshair falls, despite his acknowledged fear of heights, Wrecker jumps to save Crosshair.

This is further encouraged by how they're counting kills later on. (Like Legolas and Gimli in LotR or an earlier CW episode where Mundi also participates) Crosshair wins the round (by showing he likes to show off his skills just as much as Wrecker's "Wrecking Ball") and teases how Wrecker won't top him. At the same time, Hunter says Wrecker will top Crosshair next time (which seems to imply this is a normal game where they continue to one-up each other as siblings do). Anyway, my running theory Wrecker is closest to Crosshair and vise versa.

With all these things in mind, it's good to take a last look at the term meathead. In every dictionary (including Urban) it has to do with a dull, stupid, large jock, with emphasis on dull and stupid. While Wrecker is definitely child-like, he is in no way dull or stupid. Season 7's Bad Batch arc showed in so many ways how he's not.

Anyway, sorry for the lengthy post or if something might seem confusing, I didn't mean for it to end up this long. I just wanted to make sure that I covered a good chunk of the subtly they weaved in back when they were trying to tell stories.

Now, he's basically just a meat-head who's afraid of most things for some reason. But apparently he can eat popcorn and that's fine.

He is kidnapped by a con artist, Beelzebub, and their two henchmen in order to start a war. Crowley, who survived his rumored attack, rescues him from the trio. So I’ve been thinking about this scene where Arthur asks Merlin why he doesn’t just use magic to light the fire, specifically the look they share here. It’s the equivalent of Merlin asking 'are you ready to see this?' and Arthur's quirked brow saying ‘go ahead.' 

That's all we've ever needed to know. Yes, Arthur is dying, but he forgives Merlin and openly allows him to use magic within only two days of discovering it. Can you imagine how much he would have loved Merlin's magic after a week? a month? a year? and how free and relieved Merlin would have been to share his magic with Arthur- to start a fire in the hearth of Arthur's chambers, or to light a darkened hallway, or to fight their battles together, side by side. This scene right here shows exactly what could have been. What should have been. These boys deserved so much more than the destiny they were given, and it hurts so much because they were so close (THIS close) to being truly happy and knowing each other.

And this knowing each other I’m referring to applies to both sides. Obviously, Arthur had no idea how much Merlin did for him, or how lonely his best friend was while he kept such a fundamental part of himself hidden, but then there is Merlin. Yes, arguably Merlin knew more about Arthur, but he didn't know this. He didn't know that Arthur would accept him and love him for who he was. He didn't know that he could have revealed himself, until this moment. Until it was too late.
