How do you do your Final Fantasy edits?
The hard way, my friend. No AI is used here, I do it all by hand. 🥰 I assume you mean the screenshot manipulations I create? I'll try and give a simple summary... First, I boot up Remake on PC and use a "free camera" mod(you can find the links to the mods I use on my archive pages for manipulations, which is on my pinned post) to take a couple screenshots that I think will work well together. Sometimes I change my mind and choose a different one. It can be hard to match the camera angles and lighting, so sometimes I have to mess with that later, as well. But it's easier if they fit together from the beginning. We'll take my current WIP as an example. I started with these two screenshots:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I open them in the free program GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program), which anyone can download at gimp.org. Then the first thing I do is choose the base image. In this case, they're both facing the same way, so I choose to flip Sephiroth(you can't really do that with Cloud easily because of his earring, and his hair is less symmetrical). Since the camera was closer up on Cloud, and he's the smaller one, I usually choose Sephiroth's to be the base image. With that decided, I roughly cut Cloud from his background and paste him onto Sephiroth's image as a new layer. Then I position him, resize him, rotate him, whatever I need to do until he seems to be in the desired place, which ends up looking like this: (I ended up adding snow for this preview, so it would look more complete than it is when I showed it to my server, haha)
Tumblr media
If you look at Cloud, you can still see a thick outline of his old background around his head. Once he's positioned properly, it's time to remove the rest of his background(I use a size 10 eraser with 100% hardness and zoom in about 5 times). Then I need to think about where they're connected, and how to make them look like they're touching, as well as layering to make them seem intertwined, as if they're truly occupying the same space together.
Tumblr media
I cut away some of Cloud's shirt, and the rest of that effect will come with shading later. If I wanted Cloud even closer, I would make a duplicate of Sephiroth and erase his background, so that his lock of hair would appear to go over Cloud's face. I could also make it semi-transparent, so you could see the outline of Cloud's face through his hair. You can see I have some small game defects to fix, such as Cloud's hair clipping through his ear. I leave those tiny details for later, typically. Sometimes, because of their height differences, I have to "rebuild" missing parts of them from scratch, such as I did for this other manipulation:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's a delicate process that's mostly the clone tool(to keep the textures) and some freehand drawing, but I don't have an art tablet, so I use my mouse for everything, which can be quite challenging. I've had a lot of practice from translating doujinshi, where I'd erase the words, rebuild the missing part of the image, and then place the translated words over that spot.
In any case, I decided I wanted more out of this manipulation than just leaning against each other. I wanted Cloud to be reaching up towards Sephiroth, and perhaps for Sephiroth to be pulling him closer. To do that, I needed pictures of their hands/arms like so:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've taken hundreds of shots, so I looked through what I had first, but it wasn't the right angle, or was the wrong outfit for Cloud, so...then you open up those images and cut out the parts you want. After that, you work on positioning and things like that again. I haven't finished with that part yet, so it looks a little awkward. (And when you're doing these kinds of things, color matching is very important, but that's a bit advanced.)
Tumblr media
I'm not fully satisfied yet, so I'll probably remove the rest of the background from the arms and then mess with the placement. As for Sephiroth's hand, I intend to thread it in Cloud's hair, so Cloud will need to be duplicated in order to create that layering effect, as mentioned previously. Which should end up looking similar to this one:
Tumblr media
(I had to draw in most of Cloud's hand because I didn't have the camera mod back then, and the Sephiroth shot was provided to me by Coeurlwhiskers.) After that, it's a matter of shadows and highlights, remaining details, and finishing up the colors, etc. It's a long and difficult process, and can take many hours to complete, depending on how ambitious I get with it. Most of that stuff would be a much longer tutorial, and I did used to do some actual artwork a long time ago, so I...kind of know what I'm doing?? I probably do a lot of stuff the hard way(like not using layer masks) because I just don't have the time to teach myself more than the basics. 😅I know it may seem daunting, but it's really fun! I hope I managed to answer your question properly. Feel free to ask follow ups~

On one of my usual walking routes there's a pair of mannequin legs out in the front garden of one house and today they were standing in and topped with snow
There's nothing else to this really but I do enjoy someone having a pair of very shapely mannequin legs that cut off at the lower torso out in all elements. If no one else got me the mannequin legs on [redacted street name] got me

HI GUYS MOD HERE IM SO SORRY
Another quick Daily Nyarinder coming soon! Plus… a challenge? 👀
An explanation for my absence + details on an upcoming Daily Nyarinder event under the cut!!
So kinda personal bt my therapist left her practice unexpectedly so I got off my adhd and depresso meds at the same time as I was moving to another house and I just… really lost steam and haven’t had the energy to work on this project orz
i love cotl with all my heart! But my main fandom is svsss (shout out to kamkamquats on twt, this blog was inspired by their dailybingpup!! 💖) and trying to move all my shit over from twitter to bluesky so it doesn’t feed Elon Musk’s ai has also taken a lot of energy that would have been spent drawing for both cotl and svsss.
Additionally, last time I checked this blog I got some anon asks trying to pull me into fandom wank. The admin of this account is a grown adult with a spouse, a house, community protests to organize/attend, cosplays to make, a startup business to take care of; online fandoms are my comfort place and have been since I was 13, and as such I resolved years ago to stay away from fandom drama and just do what makes me happy. I’m really used to how chill and sweet svsss fandom is, so it was kinda startling to remember that younger fandoms are very drama-prone. I deleted those messages, but it still left a sour taste in my mouth whenever I came back to this blog.
As such, I’ve been on a break. And I probably will continue this hiatus until things settle on bluesky and I can spend more time on my friend’s cotl discord server to get my motivation back.
-
THAT SAID, I hope to do a little daily nyarinder art challenge for anyone who still follows this blog! Instructions and rules will be posted separately later today, but the idea is thus:
“YOU, dear reader, are just as wonderful, creative, and capable an artist as any cultist here. What do YOU want to see in Daily Nyarinder’s escapades? Pick up a craft and get creating! Use whatever you’ve got—whether it’s a fancy tablet, ibispaint on a touchscreen phone (that’s how dailynyarinder has been made so far 👀), a pen and the back of a receipt, needle and thread, hook and yarn, scrapbooking paper and scissors, a word doc and a keyboard, a camera, etc etc etc. Whatever medium brings you joy and renews your belief in our benevolent God of Death, this humble Narinder blog calls upon you to make and share a Daily Nyarinder post of your own!
Skill level doesn’t matter in the face of creativity. Whether you’re a renowned oil painter, a fanfic author, a newbie artist, or a kid who just really likes cats, all offerings are encouraged and welcome!
As for content rules, the Nyarinderverse is full of strange and unusual things; anything goes! HOWEVER, since this is a sfw blog and is followed by lots of minors, I’ll ask that if anyone participating decides to draw nsfw content, please make sure it is appropriately tagged and locked behind some sort of link—whether it’s a link to twitter, privatter, or elsewise. Any NSFW that isn’t hidden from immediate view will not be reblogged on this blog. If and when I reblog potential nsfw content, it will be tagged “NSFW” BY ME BY AS WELL so that my followers can filter it out if they need.
Any characters, ships, potential squicks or triggers, etc should be tagged appropriately.
Please know that this blog will never, EVER harass or condone/encourage harassment based on what you make, but as the mod I retain the right to not reblog works that squick me out personally. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make them; it just means they might not all appear here.
Works may be posted separately under the hashtag #DailyNyarinderChallenge or submitted to this blog!
Finally, and most importantly, HAVE FUN!”
^^^ the challenge text will be reposted with some promotional artwork later, but does this sound like it would be a fun event? Let me know what you think.
Look forward to the resolution of the current daily nyarinder arc this week! But then I’ll likely go back on break again until things settle. 💖🐈‍⬛

Hoya I'm currently saving up for a tablet aswell, because I'm drawing on my school's ipad that I have kept well past the due date, but have to give back now that I'm moving out of my boarding school that I'm sponsored to be in, and i wanted to ask for tips/recommendations what to get, because I have literally no money, and am scared to blow it on a tablet that sucks or something
advice on what to get can vary, but i am VERY opinionated on what not to get: fuck wacom lol. this from someone who's been on an intuos pro for years, but while they at least have longevity going for them, mine has had constant driver issues and a major hardware failing -- years ago the port for connecting it to the comp AND FOR CHARGING IT via usb failed for no reason, which is apparently a common issue for my model, so for years i have been forced to 1. only use it via wireless connection, which makes the driver fussiness WORSE and 2. buy a separate universal camera battery charger, bc w the port failing that was the only way to charge the thing. wacoms are fucking EXPENSIVE, and they're lovely to draw on, but imo for the price they should be massaging my balls as a bonus, not breaking constantly and making me tear my hair out. they are just not worth it unless you have the cash to burn and you're a HUUUUUUGE stickler on all the really technical stuff.
rant aside. i have heard nothing but lovely things about huion, which is why it's what i'm switching to now; here and there i've seen ppl say the drivers can be fussy on mac, but it doesn't seem like a dealbreaker. huions are also pretty damn affordable if you're looking at a standard tablet rather than a screen one.
if a huion is outside your budget, i think i can recommend a monoprice -- my first tablet ever was a tiny wacom bamboo, but my first "serious" tablet that i used constantly/daily was a monoprice. it was dirt cheap and it worked absolutely fine and it lasted me for ages. i haven't used one in a very long time, so i can't speak to if the quality is the same as when i used one, but i always think fondly of the one i had. i remember the first-time driver setup being awful, but once it got working i don't remember ever having issues with it again.
in terms of just general tips: get the biggest one you can afford. it's better for your wrist, and even though it's scary to invest in something when you're not sure you'll like it, it's usually worse to pay for something crappy that you'll end up wanting to replace eventually anyway. even when i've had really cramped workspaces or no real workspace at all, i've never found that the compact-ness of a tiny tablet has made up for how ergonomically shit it is to draw on one; i would rather awkwardly wrangle a slightly-too-big tablet any day.
good luck, i hope this is helpful!

So I posted this and people actually did care (exactly 2 but hey! that's enough for me! So here are my ideas of how I would/how I think they will stage the show, let's flaunt my scenic design degree baby!. Now a few caviats before I start:
I have only ever worked with scripted content before, of course I only did things I think will be possible BUT I'm not 100% on all logistics of this type of content.
These are all very rough sketches, I couldand still might do more acurate/detailed models and drawings and floor plans but wanted to at least post these/talk about them also I have so few correct measurments I cry
I am just a fan and also haven't been to the Madison Square Garden so I'm going off just the info and pics I could find on the internet and some assumptions both irl and in game
ok so obvi we will use the HELL out of the screens the venue has for close ups and more images in general
1) This is what I think they'll actually do: just a round table in the center with as many camera angles as possible so everyone sees everything and probably the same seating arangment, maybe some projections but those are harder with arena seating bc it could easily block ppls views
Tumblr media
2) This is what I would do actually do personally: make the battle map and the minis on a larger scale (but not super huge) each intrepid heroe gets their own podium decorated to fit their character, Brennan obvi gets a podium as well but his is just NYC themed like an extention of the DM screen art
Tumblr media
3) A bonus one: now, this will not happen because logistics and budget wise it would be a nightmare, but it would be SO COOL so I'm putting it here: so the whole "stage area" becomes the battle map, statues, like half a person sized, of the PCs that each intrepid heroe actually moves around(and they'd be rolling/having their character sheets on tablets so they're free to move) and Brenan has a slew of stage hands to move all his characters and all so it'd feel way more theatrical and you could use lighting to enphasize spells and it'd be so cool there is no drawing for this bc it's not realistic and in order for it to work as a drawing I'd need to know what the actual battle map IS bc it becomes the scenery and we don't know that
Shoutout to @queerpiratebrainrot and @blueberryblogger for saying they cared I actually had fun coming up with these and also with having to remeber they don't work from scripts was an interesting aspect that didn't make a diffrence on the finished ideas as much but did completely change my whole process

OK I have been seeing some people talk about content creators minecraft setups and I feel like I have to include mine.
So firstly keybinds
wasd is normal r is switch camera z is drop item caps lock is sprint (this is why I text in all caps by accident sometimes) . opens the command text q I use for modded abilities mouse buttons for hotbar slots 8 and 9 c is optifine zoom and other modded abilities
Secondly, let me explain my first streaming set up
not sure if I've really explained this on stream but I started with just a laptop but I only ever streamed when my mom was asleep so, after she went to bed at like 10pm ish I would haul my laptop, mouse, mic that was just on the desk, (eventually a drawing tablet I use as a second monitor) and cords in my arms down to the basement where I had like a second room for myself right. Now before I had a second monitor I would steal my mom's monitor from her home office, unplug it from her computer and carry that into my room with me and set everything up, every time and take it apart and put my moms monitor back every time. To be fair I would haul that computer back and forth a lot as I worked on school at the time (covid) in the basement and brought it back to my room after. I don't think my mom ever caught me doing this and I also think the cars stream was done with this set up plus my switch and capture card thrown in there for more wires.
Anyway I have since built my own computer, have 3 monitors, a mic stand, wireless mouse and headphones and I don't have to set up an entire computer station every time I stream.

I felt true, visceral fear today after I returned from work and discovered that my Huion monitor tablet wouldn't connect to my laptop. I knew that bitch was all powered up and screaming but blue-balling me with only pitch-black darkness.
I shut off and restarted my laptop 5 fucking times, rammed the usb cables in and out of my laptop's usb ports, in and out... I never thought that an expensive device - wasted for just watching funny cat videos and enabling me to draw the shapely but scaly butt of Voldemort - could be violated. Learned a life lesson here: any hole can be stuffed, you just need some imagination y'all.
Fuck tentacles, ugly men & weird-ass creatures with gigantic horse dicks - give me sub laptops/pcs getting dominated by their puny usb cable daddies!
I digress. So, I turned on my 2nd laptop which is on life-support - it never asked to be an accessory to producing hardcore incest material between Tom and his hot daddy Riddle sr, btw. But, like come on! What's better than one hot, mentally maladjusted Tom Riddle? Two of course! Think about the delicious angst, the hurt/comfort, the abandonment issues, the forbidden attraction, uugh...
Why are there so few tomcest (sr) fics? It's unfair, I'm fucking starving, eh. I mean, Riddle sr is the goddamn blueprint for gratuitously hot Voldemort! Where's pathetic, blushy, snot-nosed and puffy-eyed Tom Riddle sr??? The internet lied to me! I thought you only needed two hot dudes who didn't even have to meet each other to make sweet, sweet looove to each other... there's even incest and murder for extra seasoning!
I'm begging the ao3 wordsmith gods who kin Tom Riddle/Voldemort to open their hearts to Tomcest sr T_T) We all love pathetic men in tears and Voldemort would never allow himself to show such vulnerability but that's what we have his da for... Voldy could vicariously experience such a display of helplessness through Riddle sr! And tbh, I seriously need more beautiful works of art featuring my favourite basket case twink (dub-) non-con-ing his papa into some father/son bonding. I'm going cold turkey here!
I digress again. So, I plugged my Huion into my 2nd laptop and behold! That fucker finally connected and mirrored the laptop display, thank fucking god! Little shit was playing hard to get but it still lives! Whoop, whoop!
Thank Voldy's perky ass, I wasn't forced to make a human connection with an underpaid yet bored employee at the Huion support centre. I had that tablet for 4 years and we experienced the deepest depths of human depravity together - I cried bitter tears, cursed it for reflecting my shitty art skills - my inability to draw hot men bedtime wrestling. But, we also experienced joy together when I succeeded. That fucker made me feel like an art god when it reflected how I envisioned the smut to be. I'm not ready to end this toxic relationship, I thought I'd be.
I was all 'yeah, I'm sooo stage 4 already! I only need the Huion employee to gaslight me into buying their newest, shiny model to reach stage 5!' I'm 30, a grandma according to annoying (affectionate) internet youngsters. My body can't handle eating only instant ramen for 4 months anymore. My roaring 20s are a bygone era and for once I choose to practice some self-care, to love myself even!
For once, I was about to make an adult decision and... wait. To save up the money - to accept that I'll be a temporary full-time traditional wannabe weird-ass hentai artist with a shitty phone camera... but thank god I don't have to! My beloved tablet still works and I can be a part-time traditional but mainly digital wannabe weird-ass hentai artist with a shitty phone camera! Yeah, this is how my day went. Love y'all ~ mwaaah
Tumblr media
Shameless self-promo plug but I think you should at least look at the smut scenes to see the appeal of tomcest (sr)~ I also need some validation for providing my tears as lube for their narcissistic coupling You can read Philautia here: AO3

heyyy I'm new to digital art, would you mind sharing some tips regarding programs and tutorials and etc? also on how to turn a real life piece into a beautiful and clean digital piece... really love your art
oh good luck with your art journey! my experience with digital art is pretty dated (as in a decade + levels dated) and i might be too out of touch to give beginner tips but regardless, allow me to attempt
Programs: it would help to know which hardware you have for digital but ill put down some i have experience in 1. Clip Studio Paint Pro - PC/Android/ipad/everywhere i think? unfortunately they betrayed humankind and its now a subscription everywhere but on PC. i bought a one-time license years years years ago on sale and its probably the best available on my end. I also got it on subscription on android so i can sync works between my PC and tablet. its very flexible in a way that you can draw with it in the most basic way single layer sketches or whatever but they have so many features and keep adding more.
2. procreate - ipad only never been an apple user but my friend is, and he's been a procreate user forever. he recently tried CSP on ipad though and he still claims he likes procreate better for ease of use and compatibility with tablet ergonomics and apple pen
3. medibang paint - pc/android/ipad
free forever. and out of all the free programs i recommended my other digital art newbie friend this is what he liked best.
4. adobe photoshop - dont even look at this the only reason i have one is im leeching off company license. its still unfortunately the industry standard tho but CSP is much cheaper and has the same controls and most of the basic functions 5. Paint Tool SAI - my first art program but i haven't tried it again. honestly still think this has the best brush flexibility and pen pressure control ----- As for tutorials, i find digital art has such a steep and high skill ceiling and its a challenge im still tackling and probably will forever tackle haha. I'm trying to osmosis painting techniques from splash art painters from League of Legends who most of them post complete timelapses (my favorite being Bo Chen) where you can study not just their techniques but like, art directions that make their pieces striking. Anyway, I also promised a friend I would make a simple coloring tutorial so maybe after inktober hustle, I would look for a piece there I'd use for the guide.
---- Traditional to digital is never a satisfactory process to me but if you can, invest on a scanner. I use an epson v39, had it for years.
Tumblr media
scanned vs edited. the goal is to at least get the white of the paper as white as possible and the blacks the blackest, without whitewashing/burning the rest of the colors. Level correction function is your best friend here and most art programs have that.
Tumblr media
Then i just clean dust and errors and slide the contrasts around until it looks as close to the original piece
If you have a decent phone camera, you can get away just posting instagram aesthetic pics with materials framing it or smth and just edit as usual. natural light tends to be a lot more forgiving than the harsh light of scanners anyway.
Tumblr media
Anyway I hope this helps and have fun learning!

Oh it was only 3 actually, counting that one animatic on YouTube (that BTW i had no idea was yours! I was pleasantly surprised <3)
And I found it so funny that you have somewhat an idea of who I might be PFFF you can throw the guess, it would be funny if you get it right (don't have to say my name if you don't remember it, you can just go for something you remember NFKDSJ)
also time for an actual question since i'm already here, what program did you used for the animatic? I've always wanted to get into animating but most softwares cost money or are free but really bad so I could use some recommendations 👀
Good to hear there is no imposter lol. I should probably start using the false pfp so people know it’s me but I’m too lazy to change them all 💀 also my guess was right as to who you were but probably mainly because I put on my Aziraphale detective hat and you were the last notification before the ask inbox notification and your icon had a red beanie. We meet once again.
As for the animatic I used procreate for drawing and capecut for composting. Not the most efficient method but I liked it. I ended up segmenting off each camera angle into a different canvas and making any animation for the shot that way. I love capecut because the free version has every editing function you need for an animatic and the watermark only appears as a black screen at the end so it’s so easy to crop out. It’s probably the best free editing software I’ve found. (I also used a screen recording device to record the audio cause even if you buy a song it sometimes doesn’t allow you to put it in the program.)
I honestly recommend procreate if you have a device that supports it. I think it’s still only a 10 dollar onetime purchase. But if you don’t have a device that supports it, I have used things like flip a clip which is free, and the paid version is pretty cheap. I have also dabbled in an app called rough animate, also free (you don’t have to pay for the onion skins) which was also okay. I got frustrated cause of the lack of brush choice but other than that it’s not bad at all. If you can’t pay anything at all I’d recommend this because, unlike flip a clip, you don’t have to pay to unlock the a lot of the really helpful features. Ibis paint also added an animation feature I think so that’s an option. Idk if you need the paid version for it, but I remember only having to watch ads for a minute to unlock all the brushes so maybe it’s the same for the animation feature lol.
If you have a computer set up, I’ve also heard nice things about Krita for animation. It’s free and from what I remember it had a really good timeline set up. I actually tried to use it, but my computer at the time was old and slow and it lagged to much, and then I had a shitty no screen tablet and my hand eye coordination when it came to drawing and writing is quite bad, so it just wasn’t a good set up for me personally. But I know people make it work. I mean, people make this kinda shit in MS paint, if you’re dedicated enough you can technically do it in almost any program (though you may not be able to make it as polished as you’d like.)
Then there is Clip Studio Paint, which does cost money but is way less expensive than like, harmony or adobe. The EX version which gives you a second of free animation per project is a $5 monthly subscription for once device, PC MaC IOS, and the Pro version (which is more expensive) gives you unlimited animation animation access for I believe around 10 -15 dollars a month (still less than most streaming services lol). There’s also a one time purchase version that is $50 dollars, but it goes on sale A LOT for $25! Although I don’t think it gives you more than a second of animation. CSP also has a very long free trial period, for EX it was legit like 3 months. so if you try it out and like it, I’d definitely suggest finding a way to pay for it. It’s actually used in some professional studios in Japan, so if you have any professional aims for your work it’s a good starting platform to get into industry software. However a lot of the nice things CSP offers for animation are not needed in the story boarding/animatic stage, so if that’s as far as you wanna take your animations it maaaaaaay not be worth it unless you love it.
If anyone else has other cheap or free recommendations feel free to add on. I have attempted to make animatics on procreate, rough animate, and flip a clip; all of which I have uncompleted projects on. It just so happens that procreate is what I was using when I finally made an animatic I liked enough to see until completion. Whatever software you do use, just make sure you learn how to use it before attempting a big project. Do some smaller stuff before you try anything big.
Edit to check the comments! We got other good recommendations for computers!

Look Back (2024) Review
Director: Kiyotaka Oshiyama
Runtime: 58 minutes
Language: Japanese audio; English and Mandarin subtitles
Certification: PG (Singapore), P12 (Malaysia)
Tumblr media
Via @lookback_anime on X
Look Back (2024) is an anime film that faithfully adapts Tatsuki Fujimoto’s one-shot manga of the same name. If the adaptation had been even more faithful by treating the manga as the final storyboards, the barely one-hour runtime would probably have been even shorter. However, writer-director Kiyotaka Oshiyama makes tweaks and additions that increase the runtime and the emotions.
Look Back follows two girls, Fujino and Kyomoto, as they grow up pursuing their artistic ambitions. But when a horrific tragedy strikes them, Fujino is forced to reflect on why she even draws in the first place.
The changes Oshiyama has made really work in his favour. After watching the film, I read the manga, and I’m glad he expanded on its contents—especially the scene in which Fujino skips through paddy fields in the pouring rain. Before this, Fujino had decided to give up on drawing because she felt like no matter how much effort she put in, she couldn’t get better than Kyomoto, her truant schoolmate. Discouragement from her older sister and a friend gets to Fujino too. When she finally meets her “rival”, however, Kyomoto exclaims that she’s a fan, asks for an autograph, and declares Fujino a manga genius. During their interaction, Fujino seems like she doesn’t really want to be doing this, but when she leaves, she can’t help but succumb to her excitement. While the manga uses a two-page spread to emphasise the moment of Fujino skipping through those paddy fields, the film gives us a lot more time.
Tumblr media
We start with an aerial shot looking at Fujino as a tiny dot moving along a path that cuts through silvery pools of water. The camera smoothly moves down and pushes close to her from behind, revealing that she isn’t lightly skipping but very forcefully driving her arms and knees up. When we get to see her face, she has such an intense expression: her brow is scrunched up and her lips are pouting. I wouldn’t call this a look of joy. Still, she leans to the side and sweeps her arm through a furrow, sending water splashing out. She keeps skipping towards the camera and us all the while. My guess is that more than joy, she feels vindicated. Asked about scenes he’s “particularly happy with” in an interview with Anime News Network (ANN), Oshiyama points out this one. With its energy—and that wonderful juxtaposition between Fujino’s facial expression and body language—this is my favourite scene of the film. I love it.
I’ve mentioned that I’m not keen on melodrama in previous reviews. However, I’ve come to realise that exaggerating emotions can often work really well in animation, including in Look Back, with the film being more sentimental than the manga. And yes, I do like the anime better.
In that same ANN interview, Oshiyama points to the montages of Fujino hunched over her desk while “the scenery outside the window [changes]” as visuals that “accurately represent the emotional difficulties of being a creator”. Although I prefer the anime overall, I have to say that I relate more to how the manga portrays this struggle.
When we first meet Fujino as a professional manga artist in the film, we get a montage of her working at her desk, with the images changing drastically. The scenery outside changes with the seasons, her hair grows from short to long, and the actual office she’s in changes. On the other hand, the manga gives us five panels which all look almost the same. The seasons outside don’t change. The location doesn’t change. What changes are the position of her body and the angle of her drawing tablet. They’re subtle changes. Unlike the film, this portrayal is not romantic. It’s monotonous. Based on my own experiences of creating, this depiction feels more real.
Tumblr media

“I guess you could say, on some level, [Look Back is] meant to be an affirmation for creators like us,” Oshiyama says, in response to a question about the film’s messages. “So, my hope is that by showing characters pouring themselves into working hard to create something, people will appreciate that hard work is still meaningful.”
Now that I’ve graduated university, I’ve spent a lot of time writing. So, it seems like I’m often just sitting and staring at my laptop screen. I frequently think, “What am I doing?” Though I do prefer the film as a whole, it’s those monotonous manga panels of Fujino hunkered down over her desk that have comforted me. But it’s the film that led me to reading the manga.

Before I flew out to Japan I lost the pen for my tablet PC. This absolutely sucked. So hard. It was maybe three days before my flight. I was planning on doing some (not a lot but some) digital art during my down time just to get back into the swing of things. So I did some research and found that Yes, I can buy just about any Windows Ink compatible stylus and have it work for my Dell XPS 13 2-in-1, No, it doesn't have to be the Dell Premium Active XP Pen I'd been using since I got this laptop. This is the story of my quest to replace my tablet pen.
So I had my dad drive me to Best Buy to get my hands on a Wacom Bamboo Ink stylus. Tried it out in the car, worked fine, thought that would be enough for me.
I was wrong. About me, at least. Since I'm kind of a picky bastard.
The thing that I liked and got used to with the Dell Premium Active XP Pen was the rubber tipped nib. Pen pressure? That's variable and I can work around fewer levels or whatever. The nib though? I loved the slight drag and resistance of it. It helped make my lines smooth and I developed most of my current art style around the way I could make waves and curves work in my lines.
The Wacom Bamboo Ink stylus has a plastic tipped nib. It feels too slippery for me. I could mitigate this by getting a screen protector for my laptop, but that's a whole other story and not even the biggest problem I have with this. The biggest problem is consistent functionality. I often have to press buttons just to get it to stay working in the correct mode. Considering how it only draws on my tablet in one single mode, this gets kind of inconvenient. That on top of not feeling *juuuust right*? Guess it's getting relegated to a backup.
During my research on replacement pens, however, I learned that there's a rechargeable version of the Wacom Bamboo Ink called the Ink Plus. The Wacom Bamboo Ink Plus was not available anywhere that wasn't online prior to my trip. When I was in Japan, I decided "Hey, you're here, in Wacom's home country, during a time where the currency is weaker than the currency of your own country. Let's go to an electronics store!"
Big mistake. Because Japanese electronics stores are very different from American ones. They are terrifying.
Yodobashi Camera is a Japanese electronics chain store that is several stories tall and has many floors to get lost in. The walls are stark white and the lights are blinding as the speakers sing of the best deals possible while everything beeps around you. It probably didn't help that I went to the one in Akihabara but y'know. I went in, got help from like three separate employees trying to buy it, and spent 2/3 of what I would've to get it shipped to me in the states. Showing my passport off to get it tax-free probably helped too. Either way, it was twice the price of what I paid for the non-rechargable cousin of this stylus and the few Reddit posts I found about comparable alternatives to the Dell Premium Active XP Pen said that this one with the blue pen nib was the better alternative.
There's a very frustrating quirk about this one. Similar to its non-rechargable cousin, it also struggles with consistent functionality in a way that is even more unique. Specifically in that it wiggles. It makes my straight lines wavy. On top of how it will sometimes forget that I'm trying to draw with pen pressure and automatically pretend like I'm not pushing hard at all, which compels me to push harder on my screen. Which tends to put undue stress on a glass surface and can lead to cracking. I tried all three nibs and they all have the same issue. I even figured out how to connect it to Bluetooth which supposedly helps and it still did it.
Absolute pain in the ass. I miss my old pen. Yeah, the exterior was peeling and I had to tape it up just to keep the body of it protected, but at least it only stopped working once a year when I needed to change the AAAA battery.

Project: Movement.
Week 6, Reading week.
Tuesday
Shooting my Pixelation:
After my intensive storyboarding I decided to get into action, I acquired 2 helpers (my poor friends) and had to organize compensation (buy them pizza), organized a space, lighting and camera. There was a bit of difficulty in getting a camera as the rentable ones downstairs didn't open until 1pm and we had places to be so we settled for using my tablet as the camera. There was a bit of delay in using the photography studio as there was a assessments on but we started working at 10:30.
Tumblr media
We got set up in the studio with some additional help, we set up a black background, a desk, two lights, and duct taped my tablet to the table with some more support. I had my storyboarding on the floor next to me as reference.
Tumblr media
I had one assistant working the camera (Mae) and the other helping with styling my hair
Tumblr media
I changed into a grey shirt, which I had to wear backwards so the print on the front wasn't visible, but it fit a bit weird, it made my chest look massive which wasn't great. I might crop it out. But this is my first image. Anyhow while taking photos I tried making different facial expressions, expressions are hard y'all.
Tumblr media
I started off with using a hair dryer to move my hair around before moving onto hair gel.
Tumblr media
There was a lot of technical difficulties with following the story boarding as the hair gel refused to keep my hair in the positions I wanted. We did our best to mimic the original drawings but it wasn't happening
I ended up holding down my shirt in a lot of scenes cause my chest looked ridiculous. some shirts are not meant to be worn backwards.
Tumblr media
After that we started untangling my hair and brushing it out bit by bit and it was a struggle. It was rock hard from the hair gel.
Tumblr media
I started cutting once it was straight enough, I made my hair look like a helmet and all, recording the process from from long to short.
Tumblr media
We started shaving after a certain. I actually had to go into the print room next door and stick my head under the tap to wash out some of the hair gel and dry with the towel and hair dryer I had.
Tumblr media
I used leftover hair to create a moustache, it was an incredibly dashing moustache at that.
Tumblr media
It took us 5 hours with no breaks and we ended up with 657 frames in total.
Tumblr media
This is everyone afterwards, very tired, broken. But no worries I made sure they were fed with Super Mac's pizza.
Tumblr media
Here's the before and after!!!
Originally while taking these I was going to attempt using different visual techniques but after talking with Paul Tarpy we decided that it would be best to take clean shots and then edit them later.
I plan to put all of these shots onto an animation app and possibly draw on top of them.

Art update & 3D Robodi model images
It has been quite a while since I've last really done anything online. I've been heavily burned out and tired constantly since at least December or so (I have done drawings in months prior, but I have never posted them publically). I still do not have a new computer, even though I have enough money (about £1k) to buy the parts or even an entire computer, but there are other factors in life that need more attention being put towards right now.
I'm still in the midst of trying to get a job (damn required experience and driving license listings!), and drawing right now is bottom priority. It feels like a chore and it's not fun when I have rusted from not drawing in so long (making so many mistakes really sets off my anger problems). I really do not like being pressured into trying to do things, and I have been experimenting with 3D, but only to an extent.
So, with that said, I am going to put making newer drawings on hold for an indefinite amount of time until I feel motivated enough to draw. I'm not done with art entirely and I never will be, but I think I really shouldn't pressure myself as if art is some kind of requirement in life. I've been also having drawing tablet issues, and I noticed there's a small crack in my Huion that I haven't been able to use almost ever since I had it (thankfully the thing still works, and the crack is near the top, only half getting on the drawing area).
I may also finally add some images to my empty DeviantArt account. As much as I do not like that website nor its community, I think it would work if I just put my favorite drawings I've worked on there, specifically ones up until the end of 2023. All of the really old and weaker art (mostly from 2018 and 2020, and anything from 2017) I won't be reposting, as they no longer reflect me, and have not done so for a very long time.
-----
Now, for the second topic of this post, and in a much better light; the 3D Robodi model. I'm sure I've talked about this years ago on Twitter. Back in 2020, when I was still in my first year of university, I worked on a 3D model of one of my characters named Robodi, using Cinema 4D. It was never finished, but I did learn quite a bit when working on it. Here's some newer screenshots of him, now that I've managed to pick back up an older version of C4D (I do not like the 2022 UI layout change):
Tumblr media
This is the last version of the model to not be animated, from May 2020. The image is rendered using the Sketch & Toon shader with the Standard renderer. A few options were altered to remove unnecessary outlines.
Tumblr media
The model in the renderer itself; right is the objects list, bottom are the materials (vertex colors and textures, some with C4D specific features).
Tumblr media
The last ever version of this specific model from September 2021, with the FOV heavily reduced to improve the depth. A single black thin cube was added between the eyes to create a fake extra outline. A bit of a hacky effect; I did not know how to do inverted normals, in fact I don't think I knew that was how most computer games handled outlines.
Tumblr media
The very first saved version of the model, in Cinema 4D's editor, made earlier in May 2020. The pieces have default names and are not parented, some materials are not added yet, and the shapes are noticeably bigger, especially the base of the head and the torso.
Tumblr media
I once experimented with "realistic" materials and shading (including the dreadfully slow Global Illumination), which doesn't make the most sense for a cartoon character. Here you can see the unit plate on the back of his head, which I don't think I have ever shown before. The camera may look close here, but it's actually extremely far away with a very low FOV (dubbed Super-Telescope). Some textures are no longer in the project files, so this looks slightly off from how it did back in 2020.
Tumblr media
In October 2021, I went back to the older May 2020 model and decided to try and remake it. I realized that using one mesh and extruding it works a lot better with the Sketch & Toon shader, as it does not create unnecessary outlines when the default shader options are left the way they are. The lines in the middle of the eyes and nose are from the shader, rather than a black material cube. Of course, it would be more wise to just duplicate each mesh, enlarge them and invert the normals while applying a pitch black texture to them. I abandoned the model shortly after the progress I made here, and I am not sure why. Maybe I was burned out and lost interest.
I should probably try to attempt making a 3D model of him again and some others, now that I know a lot more than I did nearly 4 years ago (yeah, can you believe it has also been nearly 6 years since my Reville character was created? Robodi was first created in mid-2019; almost 5 years ago! Good things take time and care). It will be a difficult task, but I'll make sure to export whatever I make to a .FBX model, so that it doesn't get lost to C4D licensing Hell. Hopefully, that would make the models work in Blender and such (the materials will have to be baked into textures however, instead of being separate C4D ones. At least .FBX doesn't use an external material file unlike .OBJ, which I and others have had issues with). Maybe I could use them for rotoscoping or somethin'.
Here's hoping to me eventually finding motivation, losing my tiredness, and getting a job with stable income alongside continuing to work on my passion projects, no matter how much time has past since the day I first thought of them. I want to keep doing things, not resting in bed most of my days. Too bad winter is freezing cold where I live, and I suffer from mild hypothermia...

Tate modern
Tumblr media Tumblr media
https://www.tate.org.uk/story-player/electric-dreams-fm?utm_source=exhibition_exit&utm_medium=qr_code&utm_campaign=ed_story_player
I had a chance to see the Tate Modern exhibit pieces. I. was pretty inspired by so many electronics; however, it was not my style, but I was enjoying how there were so many parts. Of the art before the computer could be existed. What happened before the computer? I also had the shots to see a little Introduction to how digital animation went and how people tried their animation with real humans. And how the performance is deconstructed and reconstructed into different compositions. And how was to be seen now, the animations we usually see the characters. Take moderns. They typically know how to dress the gallery up and make every little gift. Making every little gift is just like connecting with the artist, including the restaurant.
I was thinking back when I was posted about the wing and safety as a woman and the public spaces. Well, it feels as if I see technology developing. As I said, the technology, even if successful and not permanent, could save everyone, not just women but everyone and this whole planet. That’s my entire point in here it’s a bit difficult to be to this solution to find out about what was the right thing is about like what if I try to be explaining is about the police and the duty of the police is outside on the street could be a bit like higher outside and much more like outside the world and cultural freedoms is would be existed much more often so I like many people women or mad or any other people who walk on the street just walking commonly home and not to feel unsafe so with a larger cities and the countries it will be a bit difficult because the murder actions is very very high alert however I thinking about back to the Jack the Ripper Jack the Ripper is one of the tricky parts to be catching murderer so I say whatever is happening is the technology, and all of the proof and evidence will be finding the criminals in the end, and the justice has to be on a higher hours and to be fair, I was satisfied to see that how was the Lal was also started to be showing the woman’s rights about being fear of strangers on the underground. Why say is the UK has to be making much more adverts not just only one posters outside more voice and more volumes to gave outside of Out the insults outside on the street in the evening what you’re making is has consequences so I think more posters more of this kind of alerts needed and more alert techniques should be teaching the woman as well when they had like any other open days so I think the police is teaching the people as well to give alert message or something to be we don’t have to be full of this insecure.
The positive aspects of this exhibition are how we see the planets and technologies. It is like working in a deconstructing reconstruction in our minds. It reminded me about what we learned and live drawings about when we had our visual parts inside our eyes when we were watching Inside as a camera in our minds is like a camera or like a lens of the camera that’s the kind of things interesting about it. I also think about when I take photographs with my tablet or the standard camera and try to zoom in. I just zoomed into the photo, and it was like, wow, it’s similar to a VR. It’s similar to how I could be just getting close to it even if I had lived with this technology for a long time but was still getting those valves. I could move everything around with my hand, and I could be just getting closer to it. I could be totally see everything clearly and also in the police stations as well as whenever is a criminal happening and the blurry effect someone in the arts or working with pictures could be totally zoomed in and could be see the faces out or see much closer to the faces of the criminal that’s the part what I also like the technology what will be developed on the time technology that could figure out either fingerprints or without cameras to be happening or how should we find the criminal even if we saw with the drawing of the picture to be what was it looks like the criminal with the cameras just like straight ahead we could take out the person faces even if it’s got covered last year when we had the contextual study we had talked about the photography and there is that guy who talked about he lost his love but there was one of the person who taken a photograph of with his wife above when he when his wife is never even done any photos because don’t believe photos at all so someone on that holiday beach Jared they just like taking photograph of him and her and it’s just like randomly and he just literally find a picture and he was so happy for finally saw the memory of with his loved phone. It was so sad, but this was our technology at the time. How was our could be like follow us as a footprint digital footprint digital footprint
My central favourite part of this solution is the room with the red and blue smudging. It’s like it all: optical illusion. Optical illusions are one of my main favourites. It influenced me since I started my journey in Art, and I undesigned illustration Zachary very referenced out with abstract; it’s so amazing and also, as I shared in the picture, my favourite ones is how the lights and all the flashlights are just like dingles. Hence, OP's design on the white rims is one of my favourite things, just like changing colours and the context. The ratio is one of my favourite things , so my favourite part is just like this optical illusion room is red. The white room is about mixing the colours up and also with the flashlight on the white room. It’s just so unique to see how it also worked with technology. This is like a bit of succession with technologies, and it is interesting to know that it is not just a handmaiden optical illusion but also a digital optical illusion. How was our affecting our lives

Part two of Day 14

Poison sighed as they sat in the glass box. After landing in Chuohku and trying to escape multiple times, they were locked in a large glass box. The glass box held a chair, a sofa couch, and they were provided a blanket and pillow. There was only one way in and one way out, and that's was from the outside. They've tried to escape after being up into the glass box, but no matter how hard they rammed their side into glass, it wouldn't buge. So now they sit in silence as they try and figure out a different way out of there. But even if they did escape, they had no idea how to get back home.
Poison snapped out of their thoughts when they heard the small tune of the speakers inside the box turn on. They rolled their eyes.
Nemu's voice filled the glass box. "Are you ready to talk now?"
"No, I'm not" Poison answered with a groan.
"The faster you answer our questions, the quicker you can get back home"
"Your questions are invasive of someone's privacy."
"Our questions are to save you"
"From who? Rei? The man is more scared of me than I am of him." Poison turned to face the speakers. "Plus, why should I ever trust people like you? Your own people have done some terrible things, and all you do is cover it up like nothing happened!"
"You don't know Rei like you think you do"
"I know more than you think I do"
"He has lied to not only you but his teammates"
"And he owned up to it in the end! At least he has the balls to own up to his shit! Party of Worlds doesn-"
Poison dropped to their knees as a loud ear ringing noise played through the speakers. They covered their ears, trying to block out as much noise as they could before it finally turned off. Poison glared at the speaker before getting up and going to the sofa. They wrapped themselves in the blanket and laid down.
Ichijiku slammed the button that turned off the speakers to the glass room Poison was being held in.
"Why are they so stubborn!? We can't talk to them without they getting defensive" She asked.
"They have strong feelings for Rei. They're not going to give in so easily" Nemu replied. She turned on the hidden camera inside glass box so they could watch Poison.
"Rei is a conman and knows how to lie to get what he wants. There is not a chance in the world he has told Poison everything. He's just using them!" Ichijiku pinched the bridge of her nose.
"We say Rei is using Poison but we have no proof and what for. What would he want with a sleep deprived art student? They work minimum wage, live in a tiny apartment with a bunch of plushies, and draws for Dotsuitare Hompo's merch team. If we don't have proof he is using them and what for, we'll go nowhere"
Nemu went silent for a bit before looking down at the tablet in her hands.
"Do you really think Rei has truly changed for the better?" She asked.
"Don't dare say such things! You can't believe that bullshit as well" Ichijiku snapped.
"Just think about it. Rei slowly started to cut ties with us around the time he started dating Rosho and Sasara. He than completely cut ties with us after he started dating Poison as well. He than supposedly spilled everything to these three, and even helped him build a relationship with his sons again. This has to mean something right?"
"Rei is afraid to open up to people ever since the events that happened with his wife." The room fell silent between Nemu and Ichijiku as Otome finally spoke up. "I can let the events between Rosho and Sasara slide. Their lease of my worry. I am worried about Poison."
"But why?" Nemu asked. "Despite how stubborn they are, Poison isn't dumb and wouldn't let someone like Rei just use them like that. We saw what happened when we even out the idea of that in their head."
"Poison is the only... fem presenting person Rei has gotten this close too since his wife died. Posion knows things we don't even know about Rei. And it's not like him to share that information" Otome continued.
"Do you think there's something in Poison that remind him of his wife?" Ichijiku asked.
"Maybe."
"What? Is he going to use that to make more weird clones of his wife?" Ichijiku's joke fell silent in the room. "That can't be true"
"Rei is a odd man. Who knows what's going on in that brain of his." Otome stood from her seat. "I'm going down there to talk to Poison"
"What? Are you sure? They didn't seem to want to talk period." Nemu replied.
"I'm sure. Just bring down a dart board and some darts"
Nemu and Ichijiku shared a looked before nodding.
Poison, meanwhile was still trying to escape. They picked up the wooden chair and held it over their head. With a loud grunt they threw the chair at the glass but it didn't even do a scratch.
"What the fuck is this shit made of!?"
"I would appreciate it if you didn't destroy the furniture" Poison only rolled their eyes, seeing Otome enter the room along side Nemu and Ichijiku. "How are you, Poison?"
"Tired" Poison went up to the glass. "You have me locked in here like a change animal"
"It was the only way to keep you from trying to escape" She replied.
"Wouldn't have to if you let me go"
"This could of been avoid if you just answered our questions" Ichijiku sent Poison a glare.
"Shut it you cotton candy lying tit having bi-" The speakers inside the glass box was turn off, so no one outside could hear Poison.
"Fesity. I see why Rei likes them" Ichijiku smirked.
The sound was turned back on once they realized Poison was done talking. "Are you finished?" Otome asked.
"For now." Poison answered. "What do you want?"
"I just want to talk" Otome answered.
"No"
"I just want to get to know you better"
"I wish I can say the same for you"
"Not even over a game of darts?"
Poison raised a brow as the door of the box opened. Ichijiku and Nemu walked in and set up a game of darts. "Darts?"
"Yes, darts. Just two people playing a game of darts and having a talk" Otome entered the box as well.
Poison glanced at the box of darts before looking back at Otome. "What's the catch?"
"There's no catch"
"I don't believe you."
"You don't need too."
Poison watched Nemu walk over to them with a box of orange darts. They ran their tongue along their teeth before sighing and taking the box. "Fine."
Otome nodded and their game of darts started. The two played in silence, the only sound coming from the darts hitting the target. They'll throw all their darts, aiming for the highest score before collecting their colored darts and going again, Nemu adding up the score as they went.
"So Poison, you're still in school right?" Otome asked.
"I am yes" They answered.
"What are you going to school for?"
"Graphic design."
"What year are you?"
"I'm in my last semester. I graduated with my bachelor in May."
"So you're done in December?"
"Yes"
"Are you excited?"
"Why do you care?"
"I'm just curious. Where you work and what you do for a living are totally different"
Poison raised a brow as their match ended, Otome being in the lead. Ichijiku gave them their darts back before they started again.
"I am. I'm just glad it will be over with." They sighed.
There was another long silence between the two as their game of darts continued. Once again Otome started the conversation.
"How's your work life?" She asked.
"It's a minimum wage job. What do you think?" They asked.
"Have you thought about joining Party Of Words?"
"Hell no"
"Why?"
"Don't want too, don't have a need too."
"And why is that?"
"I rather not work for the people covers murder to make them look better."
"That's your choice than"
Another silence fell between them as their game came to another end. The scored was tied and they were given their darts back. Otome spoke up again.
"How's your relationship with Rei going?"
Poison froze, turning their attention to Otome now. "Excuse me?"
"How's your relationship with Rei going?" She repeated.
"What relationship?"
"You both are engaged"
"How did you-" Otome held up a chain necklace that held three rings. Poison quickly snatched it from her. "You went through my stuff"
"We had our reasons"
"My relationship with them is no of your business"
"It is when it's dealing with someone like Rei"
"You talk like you didn't work with the man for years now."
"I didn't trust him than" Ichijiku mumbled enough loud for them to hear and rolled her eyes.
"Look, I don't know what beef you and Rei having going on, but keep me out of it. He cuts tie with you for a reason" Poison said.
"You see he couldn't been trust than? How can he be trusted now?" Otome asked.
"I trust him and that all that matters."
"You trust a conman"
"He put those ways past him"
"He abandoned his children"
"He had a reason and he trying to fix it!"
"He makes clones of his dead wife"
Otome finally decided to let it put. Poison froze once again, hearing what Otome said. Silence feel throughout the room as Poison processed what they just heard.
"What?"
"Rei has made clones of his dead wife" Otome repeat.
"What? That's... Shut up!" Poison threw the dart at the board in rage.
"I'm telling you the truth. Out of everything we have told you, let this one be the thing you believe"
"Rei... he would never. Why would he?"
"Greif can do some powerful things."
"I know that! But clones... clones!? Are you hearing yourself Otome!"
"I am, and I'm telling you the truth. Don't you ever think that Rei wishes you were his wife?"
"Shut up"
"Just think about it Poison."
"I said, shut up"
"Poison."
"There's a difference! There's a difference between wanting someone to be that lost loved one than seeing that lost loved one in someone else"
"Have Rei ever called you something other than Poison?"
Poison threw another dart at the board as hard as they could. "Shut up!"
"So he has"
"Look! That was back when we first started dating. And he apologized. And it never happened again"
"As you know of"
Otome took a small out of her uniform shirt and handed it too Poison. Poison snatched it away from opening it to a bookmark labeled Poison. They flipped through the pages, each page having a photo of Poison and a photo of Rei's wife with bullet point comparisons between the two. Poison felt their body tremble at everything they read.
"Wha... I don't-"
Otome threw her last few darts, winning the game. She gestured for Ichijiku and Nemu to pack up everything and the trio out the glass box. Poison's breathing quickened as they stared at the content of the book. Their heart start to race in their chest as their eyes zoomed threw each line of text.
"Think about it Poison"
Poison grabbed a dart and launched it at Otome. The glass door closed before it hit her in the middle of her head. The tip of dart got stuck in the glass door. Ichijiku turned off the sound before Poison let out a painful scream. The three woman watch Poison throw down the book went around the floor, flipping over the furniture. They watched them grab the chair from before and throw it at the speaker inside the room so no one could speak to them again. The woman left the room, leaving Poison to curl up and cry on the flipped over sofa.
