So an update about that post I made yesterday in pure bafflement about Cruising especially in terms of one particular scene.
I found a 40 min docu of the making of the film while trying to research some answers and there was a lot more truth to the situation than I anticipated. It seems as if before we went down the road of batshit in the screenplay, the bones of the story was about events a real cop went through. Like they used the real bars he visited when undercover, they used the apartment he lived in when undercover, the hotel he used for potential suspects and even how he got into a suspect’s room to search it.
I’m just going to type up what this cop said verbatim about the interrogation scene I posted about yesterday:
‘With Billy*, whatever it was, it had to be real. Could this happen? Things like this 250 pound detective, with a cowboy hat, a jockstrap. This happened in real life.’
- Randy Jurgensen
*Billy=Director William Friedkin
#I want to mention THAT WAS THE LAST IT WAS EVER MENTIONED#THAT WAS IT#WE JUST MOVED ON#they moved on but I SODDING HAVEN'T#WHAT DO YOU MEAN THIS-...#I need to take a walk#if he meant literally which his tone inflected or things very similar to it#either way#i don't know what to do

You know, for someone who supposedly watched Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid-
How is it I caught onto that Ilulu isn’t a fucking loli just at first appearance? Me, where the closest I’ve come is playing Dragonmaids.
So the first section is just the speaker setting up how she wanted to like the anime but apparently she got less and less enthusastic as the show expanded beyond Kobayashi and Tohru.
... Red flag. In my personal experience, this tends to taint a person’s view of a work and causes them to seek out problems with the work in question even when it goes beyond what a normal person or even what they themselves would do in other circumstances. So right away- I’m pretty damn skeptical.
We further go into the video and the person states that are an artist and they know what they are talking about. ... Okay, first off- You’re talking about coding as if it isn’t your internal projections (we’ll get to THAT later) so no, you don’t. Second, I don’t know if the artist thing is suppose to be connected to the ‘know what you are talking’ part but considering by the same logic a writer would know an abusive relationship in media...and Twilight exists- That’s bullshit. And third- why should anyone trust someone they likely never have watched before?
Next we get into ‘Coding in Media’. Here we have the person giving a definiton from the wikipedia article. I’ll copy paste the highlighted stuff:
“- a reader may initially interpret a set of signifiers as a literal representation, but clues may indicate a transformation into a metaphorical or allegorical interpretation diachronically “
“- i.e. acknowledging that there is sometimes an ideological quality to the coding system, determining levels of social acceptability, reflecting current attitudes and beliefs. “
However, I would like to point something out- This is from the ‘Discussion’ tab. Not the general part which she shows but doesn’t focus on. Here’s the definition she gives:
“Coding is a term used in media to refer to when the author wants to convey an aspect of a character to the audience but does not want to or isn’t allowed to explictedly state what that is.”
Here’s the article’s definition with an added definition of semiotics.
“ In semiotics *{the study of sign processes (semiosis), which are any activity, conduct, or process that involves signs, where a sign is defined as anything that communicates a meaning that is not the sign itself to the sign's interpreter} , a code is a set of conventions or sub-codes currently in use to communicate meaning.”
Here we start to see things crumble. Semiotics and by extension coding is inherently indirect. Meaning that there isn’t a defined or solid meaning. And what does that mean?
You can basically insert whatever the fuck you want into the ‘code’. Hell, you can even insert meaning into a code that DOES NOT EXIST.
The speaker does it herself in the coming examples.
Scar from Lion King is apparently ‘queer coded’ because he’s ‘effiminate and willowy’.
Jafar too since he wears ‘eyeliner’.
Ursula was ‘literally’ based off of a drag queen.
... Order-
Scar’s ‘effeminity’ is shown with him making a hand gesture...that is a sign of SARCASM. And his ‘willowiness’?
This is a normal feline body.
Jafar’s ‘eyeliner’? Common practice in Arab culture with men. (it’s called Kohl).
Ursula being based off a Drag Queen? Yeah...
“ Calling Divine (real name Harris Glenn Milstead) "the great actor from Baltimore", Musker revealed that one of The Little Mermaid's writers, Howard Ashman, knew Divine and had Rob Menkoff - one of the film's principal animators - to do "some drawings that were based on Divine".
"Even though it’s sort of disguised, it’s based on the character [of Divine]," he said."It just fit the character," agreed Clements. "She was outrageous, theatrical..." “
She’s based off a drag queen...because they happen to have the same personality. And thing is here, even if they are ‘queer coded’- Ressiannce Disney villains are made to be LIKEABLE and ENJOYABLE villains. Contrast this with say...Looney Toon caricatures. They’re meant to be mocked and disliked.
But going back to the Ursula thing- The speaker never actually proves how Ursula was based off a drag queen. She just says it with a picture. And considering that looking into it reveals the basis is a COMPLIMENT. This is relevant because either the person didn’t know this and shows they are just jumping to conclusions (considering what she is talking about- that’s NOT good) or she did know...and continued anyway. Says a lot when ‘shit research’ is the GOOD option.
But let’s strike at the heart. Why would these minor things (even drag queens are not inherently LGBT) be ‘queer coded’ on her eyes when the use of LGBT characteristics as negative are usually MUCH more blatant? Well it kind of has to do with how ‘coding’ works. See, how do you code something as complex as being LGBT? Well, we have a word for it already. A very well known word.
‘Stereotyping’
No really. The hand gesture Scar used is a stereotypical gay man gesture, gay men are stereotyped as being thinner, wearing makeup with men is stereotypically gay, drag queens are stereotyped as LGBT. The speaker is using stereotypes of LGBT people to determine of a character is ‘coded.’
Issue- Stereotyping assigns universal things to specific groups simply due to connotations, ignoring reality in the process. In reality, Scar’s gesture is one of sarcasm, condescension and sadism with his lithe figure being a connecting thread to the Hyenas, his mooks. In reality, Jafar is just an Arab man. In reality, drag queens are not inherently LGBT NOR is Ursula displaying any other traits associated with being LGBT.
If you wanna hear what I hear- replace every instance of ‘coding’ with ‘stereotyping.’
Also I find it hilarious that she goes on about how ‘not all coding is bad!’ when showing Steven Universe characters later on...as she ignores context with the Disney villains (and I suspect with Ilulu).
So she goes onto specifically ‘child coding’, using things like ‘small, naive ect.’ She also acknowledges that shorter women exist, using La Brava from MHA as an example, talking about how her figure is proportionally more like an adult than a child and how she fits into MHA’s style despite her face looking like a child’s apparently
Moving beyond the Kanna stuff (don’t care)- she talks about how Ilulu’s face looks like a child’s and how her height is proportional to Kana...similarly to how she mentioned La Brava. And talks her body? Non existent.
Why? Well, let me show you a full body picture of Ilulu without her loose shirt.
Here’s a picture of Kanna.
Notice something?
Ilulu has a thinner waist, a more pronounced buttocks and wider hips.
All things that indicate a more mature body than Kanna.
‘But KOB! We can’t actually tell what Kanna’s body type is like!’
Okay, here’s the chapter 100 cover-
Kanna’s body is clearly different from Ilulu. In fact, Ilulu more resembles Tohru, an ADULT.
And if you REALLY think Ilulu’s body type is out of the ordinary for dragon bodies in this manga-
No, no she really isn’t.
The speaker tries to say they ‘de-babified’ her in the anime with this image from the manga-
But you can tell from the way she’s drawn this isn’t normal and is likely a comedic moment.
And going back to coding- Ilulu has a job, something children CANNOT HAVE.
‘But she admitted that her face in the anime was more defined than Kanna’s, her eyes are still lower though!’
Yeah, here’s the thing-
Ilulu’s not an adult either. She’s a teenager. Of course she’s not the same as adults but she’s also not the same as a fucking CHILD.
‘B-but she admitted La Brava is also short but she’s still unquestionably an adult!”
And yet she ignores how Ilulu is, by the same metrics, not a child. She says Ilulu talks like a child. ... But doesn’t explain HOW with the season 2 trailer. In fact, her La Brava example can actually be seen as childish due to her high tone. Yes I can here the...inflections that are similar to Kanna but numerous anime have used it with non-prepubescent characters to denote immaturity.
And as the final nail in the coffin- Back in the coding section, she mentioned that authors do this because it might not be socially acceptable. Issue is, the manga has the adult Lucoa trying to seduce a child (which she never mentions or even alludes to which is surprising) so clearly, the author doesn’t feel uncomfortable with the idea so even the justification is bullshit.
All in all, this comes across as projecting her own interpretation of things onto the original work. Which DEEPLY pisses me off.

Could I request some fall/autumn/halloween headcanons with tfp Smokescreen and Bee with their s/o's?
((A/N - I got stuck on this one, so I’m sorry if it seems a little off in anyway I had to adjust it so many times.))
Bumblebee
-”Oh, do you like that picture Bee?” You asked as you sat in an old lawn chair in the garage next to him. You were wrapped up in a nice warm blanket sipping a nice warm cup of coffee in your pajamas, it was a little self indulgent to do this with Bee, but the two of you decided that a night in could be relaxing and fun. No Decepticon Autobot War, no patrolling around the dusty old desert to keep watch for danger, and absolutely no one else but the two of you just sitting around and having a good chat. It was becoming a rarer and rarer commodity that the two of you would get time to yourselves beyond the little sneaks of affection you could squeeze in when there was down time at the base- it was nice to just sit and relax and talk to each other the way normal domestic partners were able to do, even if your relationship was far from normal. Bee beeped quizzically at you as he found one of your old photo albums lying on one of the workbenches in the small concrete room, you let him go through all your old photos… even if some of them hurt to look at and remember. The one he was asking about though was a fond memory you had from when you were younger and much more entrepid than you were now. It was a picture of you wrapped up in a warm and colorfully knitted scarf with mittens to match that were covering your hands, and as you had them thrown over your head there were leaves of so many varying colors flying around you in a messy fashion, some even sticking to your flushed looking face and to the dark beanie that covered your head. “That picture? Hmm… I can’t remember who took that one, but it was a trip I took up to the mountains so I could see the changing of the leaves for the first time. You don’t really experience seasons out here in the desert, so it was nice to be able to experience it at least once in my life.” Bee beeped at you quizzically again with a lot of inflection in his tone, and it finally hit you what he meant through his words… he had never experienced Autumn either. He hasn’t been able to see the world beyond the desert and the city the resides within it. It was then that you vowed to take him on the most amazing road trip once this whole war was over, you were going to show him the most amazing and beautiful places that the world has to offer.
-You sat cross legged on Bumblebee’s yellow and black hood as you examined a medium brown shipping box that was surprisingly light for its size. Bee beeped quizzically at you as you rotated the box in your hands as you shook it a little to try and guess what was inside. It was a package you ordered months ago and completely forgot about due to the fact you got swept up in an alien war between a species that consisted of giant robots- you argued that was a pretty fair reason to forget about your mail delivery on a consistent basis. Bee beeped at you again a little louder, which pulled you from you thoughts enough to chuckle and answer hks question- “Sorry, Bee, it looks like a package I ordered a while ago. I forgot what it was that I bought and I was trying to think of what it was that I could have ordered.” Bee responded with a noise of understanding as you adjusted yourself on the top of his hood so that you could properly open the box without making to much of a mess that you would have to clean up later. “Oh! This is the knitted Fall Ware I bought from that online designer I like” you exclaimed as you pulled out a plush looking scarf that was very soft to the touch, the next item you fished from the box was a sweater made of the same material that had a beautiful and artistic depiction of a tree losing its leaves that had changed to all different kinds of colors as they almost appeared to sway in the breeze on the still image on the piece of outerwear, and the last thing you pulled from the box was a cute little beanie that had a similar pattern to that of the sweater that was made of equally soft material. Bee beeped at you again as you wrapped the scarf around your neck in glee as you strokes at the fabric with your fingers, “These were fashion accessories that were apart of a bigger fall line by this internet designer, aren’t they cute? It’s a little too warm to wear them out here in the desert, but I just couldn’t pass up an opportunity to snag myself a set when the time came.” Bee didn’t understand what you meant by fashion, but he was happy that you were happy about getting clothes that were meant to match the season of autumn. Besides, he thought you looked nice with all your new pieces of clothing- the warm colors matched your personality in a way he couldn’t describe, it was like a reflection of not only the changing of the season but also of who you were on the inside.
-You sat in your driveway in your new Halloween costumes as you watched the sun orange and yellow sun begin to dip down over the horizon. You’d be surprised at the fact that this small town does have quite a population of children, young children specifically- the ones that like to dress up in fun costumes and run around and collect as much candy as their bags could carry. You always loved Halloween and being able to celebrate it when you were little, and now that you were older and able to give out sweets on your own, you found it endearing and cute to see all the little ones running around asking for candy. You had the driveway decorated in a small way- a few body parts here and a few spiders there, but the big focal point of your decorations was none other than the bot himself, Bumblebee! He stood there nervously as the first group of kids of the night ran up to him and marveled at the “decoration” while the parents asked how you managed to accomplish such an amazing feat of engineering. “How did you get it’s eyes to glow so bright?” “It makes sounds just like a real machine!” “Oh, wow! It’s so warm and not cold at all!” After the night went on for awhile, you noticed Bee was actually having a good time receiving so much attention- you knew he would like pretending to be a statue more than he thought, olus, it was a good reminder for him about what it was that he was fighting for here on earth. These kids, these families, these people all called this floating rock their home and had nowhere else to go in the entire universe- this was a good way to not only see what he was fighting for, but for him to feel appreciated by civilians without giving away the fact he was an alien machine from another galaxy. so many kids dropped by that there was almost a party there on your block, but as it grew later and passed their bedtimes the crowd of people began to dissipate as they all waved goodbye to both you and the “statue” you let out a sigh of relief as your street was once again empty with all the houses that had light in them begin to grow dim. “How’d you like your first Halloween, Bee?” You asked as he transformed back into a car so you could usher him back into the privacy of your garage. He beeped happily at you as he began to describe all the kind things those kids said about him when they came up to place their hands on his frame- he felt so warm and loved as they spewed kind words at him in a way he had never experienced before. It made you smile as he continued on and on about his whole experience as if you weren’t there to see it, and it warmed your heart so much as you politely sat and listened to him speak with great passion and love.
Smokescreen
-You sat inside Smokescreen’s quarters that was located in the Autobot base doing nothing more than making a huge mess out of the project you had began just a few hours ago, but then again, the whole fun of this project was to get messy and mushy while teaching him the wily ways of humanity on the side. “So, why are you making a big mess again?” Smokescreen asked you as you sat on his desk covered in orange stringy pumpkin guts as you were trying to make the most traditional Jack-O-Lantern you could from this small one you picked up from the grocery store, you sighed at his question again as you tried not to touch your face out of frustration because you were still very sticky, it was literally about the third time he had asked that question- “It’s an old Hallow’s Eve tradition that dates back generations of humanity. Some people say that these little guys are supposed to protect your home from the undead, and others say they are meant to light the way for the good spirits to come and find you and give you blessings…” You explained as you finally began to carve into the surface of the pumpkin with your carving knife. “And… You believe that?” He asked in a rather crude tone as he cut you off before you could even finish your story, but you know he didn’t mean it on purpose- he just didn’t understand human customs and traditions quite yet, so it was only natural for him to think that what you were doing was rather… alien. “Does it matter if I do or not?” you shot back at him in a lighthearted tone as you placed a small tealight candle into the now hallowed and carved out shell of the tiny pumpkin “The point is that it’s tradition- and this tradition in particular can bring a lot of happiness to people. It’s a fun family activity that helps everyone get into the mood of the season, you know?” You light the candle and closed the pumpkin up to show Smokescreen what it was that you were trying to teach him about. It was nothing fancy, just your run of the mill goofy face with triangle eyes and a jagged mouth, but it seems Smokescreen just made a strange noise as he just couldn’t wrap his mind around the concept as he looked down into the face of the Jack-O-Lantern you just carved. “C’mon, help me with the next one you big grump.” You snickered as he made a face at you calling him a grump- you pulled out another round pumpkin that was much bigger than the last one that could really use a face- the point wasn’t for him to understand really, the point was for you two to finally spend some time together doing the things that you wanted to do instead of having to worry about the war that was going on outside of these walls, and he was just happy to be spending one on one time with the one person who understand him… even if he doesn’t understand you completely yet. Hew was trying to understand, and you really appreciated the effort, even if he did fall flat sometimes.
-”Thanks for taking me all the way out to the nearest coffee shop, Smokescreen” you said as you swirled the hot cup of liquid around in your cup as you sped down the freeway to head back to Jasper. You felt a sense of comfort when you felt the warm liquid swirl around in the paper cup that was in your hands, it was a little sappy, but you knew that this little cup of coffee guaranteed that you were going to have a great start to the new season (even if you didn’t really get to experience it due to living in a desert climate). “Anything for you, though, I have to say- it smells a little funny but also a little familiar… funny in a good way, I think?” He responded as you took a big whiff of your coffee through the small ventilation hole on the top of the cup. Pumpkin Spice, for you it was the perfect sign to let you know that it was the changing of the season, a perfect way to remind you that the rest of the world is experiencing cooler and cooler weather while beginning to prep for the upcoming holiday season. “It’s a special kind of spice that uses seasonal vegetation to celebrate a successful year of harvest- it’s a very popular scent on top of flavor. I use it all the time in the house as a candle because it’s kind of comforting.” You told him as you took a sip of your slightly too hot coffee- you might have to wait for it to cool off just a touch before you can really enjoy all of the flavors in the bitter liquid. “That must be why it is familiar! It’s comforting for me too… it reminds me of you, and anything that reminds me of you always makes me feel better.” You made an ‘aww’ noise at his words ad you put your hand on his dashboard. You could hear his voice stutter a little bit as he made a noise of sucking in air “I-I mean, you know- I like you and stuff but I- ummm.” He was stumbling through his words as he was trying to articulate his thoughts- he was so bad with words and it was so endearing and adorable to you. “You care about me and it’s very sweet, but don’t worry, just because you spill your guts to me it doesn’t make you any less of a macho mech.” You heard him sigh in relief. “Good! I mean- not that I think that kind of thing matters or anything. I mean- it does matter, but it doesn’t also… I mean-” “Relax, Smokescreen your emotional secret is just between you, me, and this cup of coffee.” You cut him off as you raised your cup a little to signify a mock toast as you took another sip of your seasonal drink. “Thanks. I appreciate it.” You just chuckled as you got comfortable in the driver’s seat once more as you opted to just watch the dry scenery pass you by once more- you reminisced about never being able to truly see the colors of fall, but that was ok, so long as you were surrounded by the people and bots that loved you nothing else really mattered.
-You jumped in your seat as you placed your hand over your chest in a way to try and quell the dramatic beating that you could feel inside of it. Smokescreen made a surprised noise as well, but his reaction was less dramatic than yours, which made you laugh harder at your own silliness. You both sat in front of a projection screen in his room just watching old classic horror movies from the 80s, you have seen all of these movies so many times as they aired as reruns on TV or they are always playing in the background during this time of year in shopping malls and movie theaters alike. “This is pretty gruesome! Why would those two teenagers stop in the middle of the woods to exchange fluids?! There is a guy trying to kill you!” Smokescreen emphasized as he was having a hard time understanding why humans would willfully do sexual things when there is a crazed serial killer on the loose. “You know Smokey, though this is a fictional movie, it has been known that adrenaline can increase the libido in humans- so scary things can make humans a little frisky.” You explained as you watched the killer hack up the poor teenagers who were screaming and begging for their lives. You didn’t really think beyond the words that came out of your mouth, as you were pretty much used to explaining things like this to Smokescreen, but when you caught him staring at you it made your face begin to flush as you asked him what he was looking at you like that for. “Are you watching this movie to… get your… libido er- going?” you nearly choked on your own oxygen as you coughed and almost panicked at what it was that he was implying. “Of course not! It’s nearly Hallow’s Eve and I was simply trying to get into the spooky mood!” you exclaimed as you put your hands on your cheeks to feel just how warm your face hard really gotten. “Ah…” He replied as he shifted a little in his seat on his berth. “Does that disappoint you?” you asked in a stoic way as you saw your opportunity to try and force Smokescreen into being more open and honest with his feelings. “I-I mean… I don’t- I don’t know. Yes? No?” He stammered as he too tried to cover his face in embarrassment “I mean- I like you. I think you’re attractive and I mean- who wouldn’t want to lay with you? N-Not that I want to right now! I mean, if you want-” You just chuckled as your face began to return to it’s normal color as you watched him struggle to find the words that were stuck in his audio box. “I know what you mean Smokey, I was just teasing you, you big goof.”you said as you gave him a gentle punch on his his servo- it was the closest appendage to you that you could reach to emphasize that you were just playing around with him. “Ok, good! Good” he sighed as he tried his best to turn his focus back onto the movie and to not try and think about the jarring conversation he just had with you where he nearly let his whole spark just puke out all of the deepest thoughts he had locked up in his processor. It wasn’t the right time to talk about that yet, but when it will be, he hopes that he doesn’t stammer and lose track of his words like he did earlier.

Giving objects to any other character is performed with palms. All of those cultural details are unremarkable to the japanese, but make the viewing experience that tons richer for american audiences. That's why, notwithstanding the talk over dubbed or subtitles, "Aggretsuko" need to still be considered in its unique language. The cutesy tone and inflections used by jap ladies simply can not be mimicked in english. Livedata also mechanically eliminates the observer whilst the fragment's ondestroy() method is called. We also did not upload any logic to address configuration adjustments, together with the person rotating the tool's screen. The userprofileviewmodel is mechanically restored when the configuration adjustments, in order quickly as the brand new fragment is created, it gets the same example of viewmodel, and the callback is invoked immediately the usage of the current statistics. Given that viewmodel gadgets are meant to out live the corresponding view items that they update, you shouldn't include direct references to view items inside your implementation of viewmodel. Starring retsuko, a pink panda man or woman developed from the same enterprise that masterminded good day kitty, "Aggretsuko" (a portmanteau of "aggressive" and "retsuko") depicts the existence of the 25-yr-antique accounting clerk by way of day who deals with administrative center frustrations and injustices through growling dying metallic at her local karaoke joint at night time. Extra than just escapist fare, netflix's anime series manages to fit in a tremendous quantity of insight about society within 10 short, 15-minute episodes. The injustices visible at retsuko's administrative center are usual: her overly worrying boss director ton who literally is a pig just practices his golf swing all day, the fawning brown-noser tsunoda gets unique treatment, and the workplace busybody does not appear to have whatever to do besides unfold uninformed gossip. Please enter your username or email address. You'll acquire a link to create a new password thru email. Hive co formally launched the puzzle-solving cell game based totally off the famous sanrio's franchise aggresive retsuko (アグレッシブ烈子) titled Aggretsuko the short timer strikes returned. The franchise follows the tale of retsuko, a purple panda who works inside the accounting branch for the organisation carrier man buying and selling co.,ltd. Retsuko dreamed of being capable of revel in the life of a glamorous profession lady running at a industrial organisation, but in reality, her bosses bombard her with tasks and her coworkers push her round. This remained unchanged for five long years and he or she decided to relax with someone, but that simply delivered fuel to the already existing fire in her existence. Her tale teaches us that lifestyles would not work consistent with our needs rather we work as life instructions us to. The authentic characters from the lively collection are actually going to work as in keeping with your command. Each person has its personal precise competencies. So be strategic and choose the right candidate to satisfy the assigned assignment. Now not pigs in the feel that they rolled around in mud or did not bathtub (or hello, maybe that too), but more within the sense that their conduct turned into abhorrent, and worth of landing them a nickname similar to "swine". Director ton - as he's acknowledged - or "retsuko's boss," is the laziest, most ungrateful, chauvinistic pig (i suggest literally, he's a pig) you may ever stumble upon in an workplace putting. He does his very first-class to make retsuko's work-lifestyles (and not directly, her non-public life) a residing hell, as we see. ), we adore it! Whilst season 3 ought to be released on august 27th, this cellular puzzle game of the candy weigh down kind may be a very good way to attend until then. You will be able to find your favored characters and popular clips to unencumber. Aggretsuko: quick timer strikes backs has already arrived on cell. It should not be too hard to locate it in apple or android stores, specifically if you use the brand new design filters. After some technical problems on the day of its launch, july twenty seventh, the whole thing appears to be returned to ordinary due to the fact that then. Ouch! In this kind of lifestyle rampant with sexism, wherein ladies are anticipated(!) To be kawaii and demure and submissive, input our pink panda heroine retsuko! Sidenote: Aggretsuko is a playful aggregate of the title of the series of one hundred lively shorts released back in 2016-17 underneath the name competitive retsuko. To be honest, before retsuko, sanrio had produced the character of gudetama — a genderless, lazy and hilariously zeal-less egg yolk in a perpetual kingdom of ennui. It changed into such an unusual addition to the japanese understanding of kawaii that there's now a subcategory to explain the unconventional kawaii nature of some thing like gudetama: kimo-kawaii or guro-kawaii (that which is peculiar, and gruesome-lovely). It is precise exercise to separate the ui action from the actual information due to the fact the statistics might be up to date for diverse motives. For instance, if we fetched a list of buddies, the equal consumer is probably fetched again programmatically, triggering a livedata replace. From the ui's attitude, the truth that there is a request in flight is just some other data point, much like every other piece of information in the user item itself. We are able to use one of the following strategies to display a regular records-updating status in the ui, regardless of wherein the request to update the information came from: inside the separation of worries section, we cited that one key gain of following this principle is testability. If hearing the words "insightful" and "sanrio" in the same sentence made no sense to you, you're sorely behind on the atypically-cute characters as well as the delightfully perceptive and acutely observational animated shorts that the company has been churning out for the past few years. Sanrio, japan's mascot design giant, which was (until recently) most famous for making adults annually buy into $7 billion worth of merchandise featuring a somewhat-anthropomorphic little cat that was originally aimed at preadolescent females, has somehow managed to redefine and subvert kawaii culture, which is a huge part of japanese popular culture and society. Don't reinvent the wheel by writing the same boilerplate code again and again. Instead, focus your time and energy on what makes your app unique, and let the android architecture components and other recommended libraries handle the repetitive boilerplate. That way, users can enjoy your app's functionality even when their device is in offline mode. Remember that not all of your users enjoy constant, high-speed connectivity. Whenever your app needs to access this piece of data, it should always originate from this single source of truth.

Conversation w/ Kevin Martin & Dylan Carlson // Clash Music
In one of recent years’ more surprising collaborations, Kevin Martin (AKA The Bug, Ice, Techno Animal, God) and Dylan Carlson (AKA Earth) have followed up a 2014 EP with a full album: 'Concrete Desert'.
Having each established a reputation in what might seem, on the surface, like completely different fields — one in bass-heavy dub-inflected electronica, the other in bass-heavy minimalist guitar drone — 'Concrete Desert' is a powerful demonstration of what genuine musical risk-taking and an ear open to shared loves can do.
Clash caught up with the dynamic duo at Ninja Tune’s headquarters in Kennington, London.
Clash: It’s great to encounter a genuinely surprising collaboration when so many these days feel like they’re just being done to grab audience share or headlines…
Kevin: My problem with most contemporary music culture is its safe. Some people want music to be an easily consumable thing or want comfort. I like the fact that a band like Autechre or Sunn O))), who have made zero commercial compromises, just by being committed to their aesthetic, people pick up on that: you gain an audience through respect.
It takes a lot of bravery to keep doing what you do if it’s not commercial. Dylan has had the lean years that I’ve had: peer pressure, family pressure, mental pressure thinking “am I mad for going down this path?” But, actually, it’s the only path I can live with myself. Buddhists believe in navigating a path through chaos: I think music is that path through chaos.
Dylan: When I was first starting out I lived in Aberdeen (State of Washington) for a while and I used to watch the Melvins practice. Buzz (Osborne) said, “there’s two ways to do music: you can try and do what’s happening right now which you might succeed at but you might not. Or you do what you do and you keep doing it until, if you keep doing it long enough, people catch up to you.” To me it’s like people think “why would this guy waste his time for 20 years doing this? There must be something there.”
So, yeah, I could have made 'Earth 2' over and over again. When 'Pentastar' came out we played this music festival in New York — we played one song, the Jimi Hendrix tune ‘Peace In Mississippi’ for 45 minutes. I didn’t know but a friend of mine who worked for MTV came backstage and told me the whole audience was all industry people: they’d all come to see Earth and they were furious. One lady was so angry, “who do they think they are making fun of us?!” I had no fucking idea. Supposedly Gene Simmons was there.
Kevin: As I’ve gotten to know Dylan I found out he moved around a lot, I did too, my dad was in the navy. I feel quite rootless. I’m sort of envious of musical forms that are pure because I love those forms whether it be reggae or hip-hop or grime or whatever but I’m just this mutant freak who ghosts through cities and scenes.
I am always attracted to the idea of people trying to be originators and mavericks and I feel that’s what Dylan definitely is. Also just trying to maintain a trajectory: I always aspire to a different record, I always want to surprise myself, but I don’t want it to be radically different because that can feel very kneejerk.
Dylan: Yeah, you don’t want to look like you’re genre-hopping but I abhor the idea of making the same record over and over and Kevin feels the same way.
I remember as grunge was happening, it was the tail-end of the hair metal years, and so all the want adverts for musicians were hilarious: “looks, hair, attitude: gotta have gear — we’re going places, we’ve got a development deal…” and, of course, none of those guys went anywhere because grunge killed that paradigm. Then grunge became its own by-rote thing: it’s really funny to me, the concept of picking the genre before you start the band.
Kevin: I literally started making music, as opposed to just absorbing it, through DIY post-punk music: the idea of independence — trying to do your own thing. Why would you want to sound like someone else? Why would you want to adopt the formula that gets you accepted? With 'Techno Animal', as soon as we worked on something that sounded like something else we’d drop it and move on.
Of course it makes your life more difficult: sometimes it feels like spiting myself. 'Techno Animal' was too noisy for hip-hop people and too hip-hop for noise people; God was too jazz for noisy people but too noisy for jazz people; Bug it’s too noisy…There’s a theme here isn’t there? Too noisy for grime people or dubstep people.
Really it’s just staying true to a path you feel inspired by. I want to develop my own voice. With music that’s the critical question: how can you make yourself have a voice through machinery? Same with guitar. It comes through texture, tone, philosophy, aesthetic: how can you continue to develop an aesthetic that’s true to you and feels good?
Your shared aesthetic is noticeable, but how did the two of you actually come to make music together?
Kevin: I was a fan-boy. I’d heard 'Earth 2' and was horrified by it in a good way. Then I got totally smitten by 'Hex; Or Printing In The Infernal Method' and then followed Dylan’s path from 'Hex' and really liked how he had continually taken left turns and absolutely explored the space in music between notes and how he seemed obsessed, like me, with slowness and volume.
At the time I was looking to try something different with 'Angels & Devils' and I wanted half the album to be expansive, textural, not club-orientated. When we originally worked together on what became the 'Boa' EP, the idea was that one or two of those tracks would be on 'Angels & Devils'. But, because I felt we had created something really special in a wholly different area and I felt we would push the album in a direction that may not fit.
I must admit I had a hunger to do more stuff with Dylan: I think he’s a craftsman of the top drawer and, for me, I’ve become obsessed with tone and texture and Dylan has that times a zillion.
Dylan: I’m more often in the position of collaborating with people through Earth as the line-up changes a lot, but if I’m working with someone where I trust what they’re going to do is going to work and then with him, since he asked me, I figured ‘how can I not work with him?’ So after 'Angels & Devils' we got asked to play Supersonic together and then the Ninja Tune 25th anniversary party in LA and that’s where the opportunity to work together came from.
Kevin: It was originally meant to be another EP. I popped the question: “hey, we’re going to be in LA, how do you feel about doing another EP?” Prior to going to LA I was working on some sketches in Berlin and Brazil — and it snowballed.
Suddenly I had a lot of sketches in front of me that I felt were alright and were very much with Dylan in mind. So I reached out to Dylan, said that we had a few days off, that I had a few more sketches, did he fancy having a crack at an album?
I think Dylan must have thought I was mad particularly as we only had two days booked in a studio. In all fairness it was wicked of Dylan to say yeah.
Dylan: I laid down my guitar tracks in those two days then Kevin did his work after that, the tweaking came later in Berlin. He reacted to what I had done.
Kevin: Exactly that. I reacted to what Dylan had done. Again, what was really interesting was we didn’t really know each other. When we did the first single we had no direct contact other than email.
So the studio sessions for 'Concrete Desert' was the first time we were sitting next to each other, Dylan with a guitar in hand, and we were discussing ideas for the tracks — getting to know someone you know? Being able to communicate about how we could structure shit and just philosophically talking about LA. We didn’t know the album would be focused narratively on LA until after the fact.
So the focus on Los Angeles came later…?
Kevin: I realised that what I would love to do was to recreate LA again in my head. The information I got from Dylan, as a one-time resident of LA, made me think maybe I wasn’t totally mad in my perception of the city. It was me wanting to recreate the haze, the expansiveness, the alien quality of that city: trying to evoke it in a listener.
I think when we discussed the idea of calling the album 'Concrete Desert', when I first heard what Dylan had ended up gravitating toward sonically, he was doing stuff that, for me, sounded like inner-city claustrophobia, but his recent stuff sounded to me like desert music, parched, dry, barren landscapes. The idea of this collision of the two — which I feel LA is — is what I hoped the album would be.
Dylan: I lived there for four years and I still have a weird fondness for LA that Kevin doesn’t share — but a similar view about the disparities of the city, the alienation and fractured nature of the city, the complete ecological disaster that the city is. And yet it’s the producer of fantasies, it pretty well governs the fantasies of the entire world with its output.
It’s the core of the American dream: Los Angeles. Yet, at the same time, it’s the city of massive homeless encampments. Because it’s so big it’s very territorial: people don’t go outside of their neighbourhoods. A friend of mine was from San Gabrielle and there are two gangs there: none of his cousins could go to school there because it meant crossing five blocks of the other gang’s territory.
The very insular nature of the neighbourhoods and the fact that it’s a supremely racist city. America’s a supremely racist country which it keeps trying to deny but I especially notice it having spent a lot of time in London now.
So the album isn’t just pure dystopia or celebration then?
Dylan: I consider myself weirdly optimistic. I’ve always viewed my band Earth and the music I make as an antidote to the bad stuff in the world rather than waving a flag for it.
Kevin: Earth’s music now is incredibly pretty — to me it’s beautiful — and 'Concrete Desert', I feel there’s a beauty to it. OK, it’s dystopian in theme but actually, just as LA isn’t all hell, there’s sunshine and beauty in that city — and the dreams of a city, and LA in particular, there are the dreams everyone aspires to. And I didn’t just want to make an ugly record, I wanted it to have duality.
Some people might listen to 'Concrete Desert' and be disappointed it doesn’t sound like ‘Skeng’ (note: track from 'London Zoo') or may be disappointed that it doesn’t sound like 'Earth 2'. We wanted to sound like X plus Y equals Z.
We both knew that we wouldn’t want it to sound like a typical Earth record or a typical Bug record. I know Dylan pushed me: for instance, there’s a couple of tracks where it’s like trying to find a new form of fuzzed out jazz that swings like a motherfucker — I don’t think I would have done that without playing alongside Dylan. The collaborative process is crucial: it’s about creating sparks and collisions that form new mutations.
Dylan: There are musicians that I admire that are weird, solitary types in a certain way but, to me, other people do stuff you wouldn’t think of and they add to what you’re doing, so the magic happens when you interact with other musicians.
Kevin: When I started making music, music was the only thing I loved that helped me make sense of the world. I started because my father and my grandfather were musicians, so it was in my blood. Also I dropped out of school very young, warfare at home so got kicked out my house — there weren’t any other options.
Punk music was my driving force because it seemed to reflect the madness I was surrounded by. You didn’t make music as a career move: I think, now, a lot of people are doing it just to make money — same with contemporary art. I made music to make myself feel better about this world; to understand this world, and myself, a bit better — to escape this planet.
Dylan: That’s the thing, all the best music, there’s a sense of freedom and limitless possibilities. So much music now — and there was plenty of shit back in the old days too, we’ve just cherrypicked the good stuff and think “oh it must have been great back then,” when really it was the same — I question its motives: they don’t seem pure, there’s a lack of people who are doing music because they can’t do anything else. The best music, to me, it’s because you’re desperate to make music, it’s all you can do.
I’ve watched it change so much. Before, alternative music was made by people no one liked, the outcasts who had to find their people. Now it’s the cool kids doing it: the cool kids already have everything else… When I started I really wanted to fuck people off.
Dylan: I think that’s a common theme when we’re young. I remember when someone interviewing me asked “what inspired you in the early days?” and I said “revenge.”
Kevin: That’s it. I had a lot of issues and music was my way of dealing with them: it was about therapy and spite. I was all about getting immersed in the horror: I wanted my music to show the ugly madness of it all. Now I feel I’m trying to create parallel worlds and to create sounds I can’t hear anywhere else as opposed to trying to reflect the madness of everything else. There’s a shift, that’s something different.
Maybe I’m, finally, a more positive person? I feel I am attempting to be a craftsman at what I do. I would have spat at myself saying that 25 years ago. But I’ve fallen in love with the craft of producing sound and I’d like to leave this planet in the process of doing so. I think Dylan feels the same.

How I Learned to Love Writing With Emojis via /r/emojipasta
How I Learned to Love Writing With Emojis
Oh, I give up! Give me words! Real words! They’re so much easier. 🍑 as much as I want to 🏃 from these cartoons, I ⛔️.They are rapidly seeping into the vernacular of the 🌐. It’s a ⚓️ or 🏊️ situation.
I get 📧 now with little characters in the subject line. My text messages and social media feeds are increasingly 🌝 of 😃-only sentences or thoughts. Instagram, specifically, says nearly nearly 4️⃣ 0️⃣ % of the text posts on its apps contain emojis. Domino’s even lets you order a pie now via tweet with just a 🍕.
Emoji is the new lingua franca. and like learning any new language, brain power, practice and tricks are required—especially for an idiom that has 💩 and 👻 but no equal sign. Unfortunately, there is no 🌹 💎 for emoji yet, so this week I took it upon myself to create my own 😃 🏫 and become a better emoji-unicator.
Understand the Language
My first 📶 was understanding that 😃 is unlike any other language out there. Yes, a small character can be a substitute for a word, or many words—similar to Chinese. But taken together, the language lacks the grammar, vocabulary, syntax and semantics of a true language.
The result can be complete and utter ambiguity, which is why most are confused by a string of characters sewn together. Take, for instance, this coupling 🚗 🏠️ .
“So… a car and a house. Easy!” Yes, that’s obviously the literal translation. But it could also mean “I am going home.” Or it could mean “I left the car at home.” Or it could even mean a “car’s house,” aka “garage”—since there isn’t a dedicated character for that.
But emojis have a “useful ambiguity,” says Mark Davis, the president and co-founder of Unicode, the group charged with defining the characters for all 📱 💻️ —including emoji characters. He believes they are best used as an “adjunct” to text—especially in social media—helping to make up for the the lack of gestures, facial expressions and intonation found in speech.
“ 😃 😎 💪 💃 📱 ⌛️ 📏 🔗 📖 ➕ 🍲 😋 🔵 🌻 😂 " Dr. Davis said.
He thought I was a bit 🌰 🌰 🌰 for even attempting to write the first part of this article strictly in 😃 . But even to just supplement text with emoji, you need to adjust your brain to think visually: how to communicate in cartoon.
For me, that meant replacing certain quick responses and feelings with some basic characters. A 👍️ is an easy way to say “Sounds good!” I can convey my bad mood about having to work on Sunday with just a 😡 or my excitement for my sister’s landing a new job with not one 😍 but 😍 😍 😍 😍 😍 😍 😍 😍 .
When I started to embrace that, I felt in some peculiar way that my text messages had more emotion. In switching from ☎️ and 👫 communications to primarily 📄 , we have lost out on the feelings that can only be conveyed in inflection and 😊 😝 😂 😣 😭 😥 😩 😮 .
Learn the Vocabulary
Getting a handle on just how and when I should start using emojis instead of words was the easy part, figuring out how to actually 🔎 the emojis to help me express myself was much harder.
The best 💬 I got came from Jonas Downey, a self-proclaimed expert emoji communicator and co-creator of Emojisaurus.com, a website that provides emoji translations of popular phrases.
“ 😮 1️⃣ 0️⃣ 0️⃣ ❓️ 😬 💡 📝 💯,” Mr. Downey told me. “Making emoji phrases is like writing sentences in English—you get better when you know the whole vocabulary.”
So I took his 💬 : I sat down with the iOS emoji keyboard, and got to 📚️ . Why hadn’t I been using 💪 to tell people I was at the gym? Or 👉️ 🍷 to ask people out for drinks? Or 🚽 to say, well, you know?
The trouble is that the characters that would best express ourselves aren’t always there. One reason is that emoji comes from 🎌. (In Japanese, emoji means “picture character.”) By my count, 5️⃣ % of the nearly 9️⃣ 0️⃣ 0️⃣ emojis available to 📱 users aren't going to be useful to many people in the U.S., like 🏮 and 🔰 .
That also means many potentially useful characters are missing. While there are 🐥 🐣 🐔 🐤 🐓 , there is still no single emoji for 🔥 🐶 .
We are now starting to see an expansion of the emoji language, including some very American characters. Microsoft has just added 🖕 to its keyboard in Windows 10. (It isn’t available for Android or iOS). And both Microsoft and Apple now support 🖖. (You know, “Live long and prosper.”) In the years to come, we can expect more and more 🇺🇸 😃 .
Learn on Apps
With a better understanding of the new vocabulary at my ☝️ , I was ready to put it into use. But this is where our 📱 are failing us.
The 😃 keyboards on iPhone or Android 📱 are utterly disorganized and unfamiliar. Yes, they will automatically add your most used 😃 to one pane, but even if you get the hang of where some are located, you’re stuck swiping through pages of little cartoons. I also fell in ❤️ with Keymoji. Although it also doesn’t have the multiracial option, it suggests emoji as you type in regular text, right on top of the keyboard. And it doesn’t just suggest regular emojis. For instance, when I typed “long time no see” it suggested 📏 ⏰ 🙈 . Some emoji elitists may say this sort of thing is cheating, but I won’t tell anyone!
However, on a whole, Android users lack quality emoji characters and apps. The best I found for my needs was SwiftKey (also available on iOS). The popular keyboard app auto-suggests some emojis as you type, for instance 🍕 , 🍟 , 🍩 , but it isn’t as advanced as Keymoji. And none can make up for the fact that Google still hasn’t brought different skin tones and its human emojis look like the Minions from "Despicable Me."
This ➕ another layer of confusion to communicating in emoji. Because the software platform creators control the visual representation, an emoji sent by an iPhone user to an Android phone user will 👀 different—in some cases, really different. Take my beloved 💃 . Red dress. Great moves. She can be used for many expressions from “social” to “party.” On Android, it’s :android_dancer: . Yes, a yellow blob with a rose in its mouth. Send that to someone, and the 🌹 🔫 .
A few Android apps promise to ease the pain and translate Android emoji to iOS. The best one I found was Sliding Emoji Keyboard iOS, though it is slightly less convenient to switch to a dedicated emoji keyboard in Android than in iOS.
That brings us to my most important emoji learning of all:
😜 👍️ 😃 ❗️ 🎂 🍣 ⚾️ 👍️ 😃 ❗️ 💞 💗 💖 👍️ 😃 ❗️
Playful chitchat, literal conversation and sentiment all benefit from these little characters.
🍑 😐️ 💬 ➡️ 📧 ♏️ ⚽️ ☔️ 📍 🆓.
But serious communication should stay emoji free.

The UnDefinitive Guide to Kiwi Slang
TLDR: No one understands half the things WE are saying so Linda makes a list.
As I have found out in my time in America so far, many of my commonly used Kiwi slang is non-existent here (in fact, most people don't even know what I mean when I refer to myself as a Kiwi). I decided to write this post when I told a friend of mine I was "up to fucks" which in retrospect, can be totally misconstrued as something akin to hoe-ing around.
So I thought I'd compile a nifty list of Kiwi slang I use on a regular basis. Even for some Kiwis, a lot of the slang I use may not be used in a particular part of New Zealand. There is also a lot of Kiwi slang that I don't use which I won't include (for instance, 'tu meke' or 'hard out' and honestly you could probably write a book on Kiwi slang). Heck, for all I know, some of these could be used in other parts of America seeing as I have only used these on the East and West Coast and the sample size doesn't really encompass the entirety of America.
1. Flatmates, Flatting, Flat
Basically, any phrase with the word 'flat'. In America, they use roommates instead of flatmates, they say sharing a house/room or living together instead of just saying flatting together and you refer to your dwelling as a house, apartment, rowhome, or whatever instead of just saying flat. I asked someone what you call it when you go flatting ie. move out of home and quite literally you say "I'm living away from home'. In all honesty, having an umbrella term makes it much more versatile and people find it super charming when I say flatmate.
2. Sweet As
Meaning anything along the lines of "all good", "sounds good", "that's cool", "no problem" - basically any term that implies a good-natured confirmatory response .Zoe used this in her work emails for weeks before her senior cracked and finally asked her what she meant by "sweet as". People think I mean "sweet ass" which when used in place of "sweet as", makes no sense:
"Hey Linda, could you take out the trash please?"
"Sweet ass" - it just doesn't work.
3. Churr bro
Similar to "sweet as" above - people just ask me if I'm just pronouncing the word 'cheers' funny.
4. Crook
This word is ingrained in my everyday vernacular, and is so versatile in its use that when someone finally asked me what I meant when I used it, I struggled to think of a definition that didn't contain the word crook ("You know, like when someone is a bit crook?"). Thankfully for Google, their definition is pretty much spot on - “(especially of a situation) bad, unpleasant or unsatisfactory".
Feel hungover or poorly? You're feeling crook.
Know a dodgy fulla? He's crook.
You did something that would probably constitute as unsavoury? You're crook.
5. Yeah Nah, Nah Yeah
Where "yeah nah" = no, "nah yeah" = yes. It's all in the tone and inflections, where the yeah has to sound a little promising with a slightly higher pitch and the nah has to drop a few octaves and trail off.
6. Durry
No one here uses the term durry and everyone that I've used this term in front of loves it and thinks it sounds fancy as fuck. Americans just use the term cig, cigarette, smoke, whatever and also pronounce it as 'durr-ree' as opposed to 'duh-ree'.
7. Battling
When one is attempting to complete an arduous task and still manage to somehow muster the energy to complete said task. This term is mainly used after a loose Friday night, you wake up feeling like death but you still manage it to make it to brunch the next day and maintain some semblance of humanity, and when someone asks you if you're okay because you're fully aware that you not only feel like death but you look like death as well, you flash them a half grin and whisper "I'm battling" and they give you a look of compassion and understanding because you still managed to be somewhat of a productive human being despite dying inside.
8. Rinsed
For when the term "drunk" doesn't quite encapsulate the absolute state you're in because you're positively smashed, you say you're rinsed. In America, there may be other terms to encompass this state of being but I've only heard the term "super drunk" which I guess suffices for all intent and purpose.
9. Too Easy
A friend of mine currently working in LA would respond to his seniors asking him to complete a task with "too easy". To most Kiwis, it is simply yet another confirmatory response, akin to 'sweet as'. His American colleagues made a complaint because they thought he was making a mockery out of the tasks they asked of him.
10. Keen
Akin to saying "I'm down" in America. When someones asks if you want to partake in anything, a typical response would be "Yeah I'm keen" or "keen as".
11. Skull/Dense
Still not really sure what Americans use in lieu of these terms but it refers to finishing off a beverage extremely quickly, usually alcoholic in nature - "I'm going to skull/dense this bottle of wine in 10 seconds, a magic trick I like to call the disappearing act."
12. Stitched Up
When someone puts you into an unsavoury situation, they are 'stitching you up'. I usually do this to Zoe by tagging her in obscene memes because she has her mum and Nan on Facebook, who have like 100 friends, and so whatever dank meme I tag Zoe in is sure to appear on their Facebook - in a sentence, this would be "Linda stitched up Zoe". Or when your friend shares something with someone he wasn't supposed to and that person ends up bringing it up with you, it means your friend stitched you up.
13. Up to Fucks
Perhaps the most misconstrued term of them all, 'up to fucks' means you're up to nothing, you're procrastinating, something of that essence.
"Linda it's been 6 weeks, have you found a job?"
"Nah mate, I'm up to fucks."
14. Dodgy
In America, people use the term 'sketchy'. It means when something/someone/somewhere is potentially dangerous or dishonest.
15. Pack
I don't know how commonly this is used in NZ, but it is a commonly used term in my group of friends. It means to leave, ditch or not bother with someone or something. For instance, if Zoe ends up at Mish Mosh while everyone else wants to go to Cavern Club, a common phrase in our social circle is "Pack Zoe". Or if you're saying it to Zoe yourself, "Zoe we're packing you" or "Zoe, you're packed".
16. Benching
Equivalent in America to "on the back burner". When you're talking with someone you're not quite ready to pursue but you're not ready to lay down some groundwork either, you're benching them.
17. Wop Wops
The middle of nowhere. Synonymous to "bumblefuck" in America.
"Linda, did you get lost again? Where are you?'
America: "I somehow ended up in East Bumblefuck"
Kiwi: "I'm in the fucking wops"
18. Piss
'On the piss' = I'm drinking so if someone asks you what you're up to, you respond with "I'm on the piss".
'Pissed' = while this could also mean you're annoyed, context is key. In our instance, it means you're drunk.
These are not to be confused with "taking the piss" which means you're making fun of someone in good humour, you're joking, providing a bit of banter.
"Linda honestly, please stop making jokes about no one ever loving me."
"Honestly Zoe, mate, I'm just taking the piss."
19. MEAN
When something is cool, awesome, some sort of positive adjective. Your mate produces a mint piece of artwork and to show your support and enthusiasm for his woke, artistic endeavours, you tell him "it looks fucking mean".
20. Ay?
This one is a little tricky because it's a very multi-use term.
It turns any phrase into pretty much a question: "Hey you don't want that ay?" you ask, while hungrily staring at the slice of pizza your friend has left on her plate.
Or when you're only 90% sure of an answer but you don't want to seem too confident on the off-chance that you're wrong, "oh it's 387 ay?" so in the 10% chance you're wrong, you don't seem too wrong because you said 'ay?' and that softens the blow.
Or when you're expressing disbelief at something:
Zoe: "Linda I made a friend today."
Me: "AY?????"
21. Dairy
A convenience/corner store. When you're too lazy to go to the supermarket and you're willing to pay the 9000% markup on the shitty Big Ben pies, you head off to your local dairy to pick up a pie and maybe a Starz drink too.
23. Feed
A meal or food - "Hey you keen for a feed?" or in normal terms "Are you down to grab a bite to eat?"
22. Shot
This one is a little tricky because it can be used in place of saying 'thank you' but it could also be used to commend your mate when he does something worth applauding.
"I picked us up a mean feed on the way home." to which someone could reply "Shot!" or "Linda I got to level 80 in World of Warcraft" to which I would respond "Shot bro!"
23. Shout
Not to be confused with 'shot' above, but to 'shout' means to treat someone. "Hey I'm keen for some Denny's tonight. Your shout?"
24. I reckon
Similar to saying "I think" or to agree wholeheartedly with someone.
"I reckon that I could dense this jug of mojitos by myself" - where here it's like saying "I think..."
Or "Honestly Linda, using Sprite Blast to make mojitos was a genius idea." which I would respond with, "Yeah I reckon!" to wholeheartedly agree that a winner mojito recipe is 1 part mojito to 4 parts Sprite Blast (NOTE it has to be Sprite Blast) with a bit of lemon juice and mint is bloody delicious.
25. Not Even
It's like saying "No way!" or "I can't believe it!".
Zoe: "Linda I managed to look like a 4/10 today."
Me: "Not even!"
26. Gap
It means 'to leave' and makes much more sense in context:
"Gap it g." when you're angry at your mate and you are telling them to vacate your immediate vicinity.
"I'm gapping it/I gotta gap" for when you have to leave.
27. Heaps
To express a large quantity, or frequency.
"How much do you love Harry Potter?" and you respond with "Heaps."
So in this context, I'm saying I love Harry Potter a lot, or very much. Or "How often have you gotten shit-faced this week Linda?" and I would respond with "heaps of times."
28. What a stink/sad guy
When your mate has done some stitching up, you say they're a 'stink/sad guy'.
"Zoe, I've packed you and have found a new best friend."
"What a stink guy :("
29. Gutted
To express disappointment at someone, a situation, something.
"Densed two bottles of wine and now can't bring myself to drink wine anymore, I'm so gutted." or "Linda I'm coming with you to America" and you're just like "Oh gutted."
30. Can't be bothered/fucked/assed
I thought everyone used these terms but this one is a hit or miss with some people here. I asked my flatmate what the equivalent is and she said it would be somewhat equivalent to "when you don't give a fuck" but it basically means when you just don't wanna do something because you're lazy.
"Linda are you going to try figure out what you're gonna do with you life?"
"Honestly I just can't be bothered."
31. SEND IT
100% not even Kiwi slang but a commonly used phrase in my social circle. Very similar to dense/skull but deserves it on place on this list. This phrase is derived from one afternoon of day drinking where a typical Kiwi bloke no one really knew turned up to a party, got rinsed and passed out by 3pm but not before he encouraged everyone to "send it". It is simultaneously a cue to finish the entire contents of the drink in one's hand and also saying 'cheers' - a very versatile phrase that should definitely be employed in the rest of New Zealand's slang vocabulary.
A great instance for which this phrase should be used is when you're the sober driver for day 1 of an 8 day bender, and your friends have been polishing off a bottle of tequila and 2 cases of beer before you've even had a drop of alcohol (so much alcohol was consumed in said vehicle that as I was being breathalysed, it thought I was over the alcohol limit even though I was dead sober). You have to play the catch-up game real quick and your mates are real supportive of you and telling you "to fucking send it" for encouragement as you dense a bottle of wine in what you would refer to as your best disappearing magic trick yet. Bless.
So there we have it. There are so many other slang terms commonly used in New Zealand and a quick Google search would bring up other lists compiled by other Kiwis but honestly, it varies so much across New Zealand so I wanted to create a list unique to how I talk. It makes for great conversation pieces because I've had hours of long conversations with people who are fascinated by the slang that I use and how fancy they think it sounds (even though in New Zealand, there is nothing fancy about saying "bro, you keen for a mean feed? Your shout? Shot bro.").
