A/N: I was soooo stuck on this one so it's a little short but I think it rounds out this part of the plot nicely so that we can get both pairs back by themselves for a bit. Don't worry though this won't be the last chapter of this story, just the last one for a little bit while Tyler and Gee and Jake and Sam focus on each other again. “Jacob Seresin. What do you have to say for yourself?” Officer Mullins said, glancing at the school superintendent. 

“I’m real sorry. I won’t do it again.” Jake murmured, his gaze flicking from his father to the cop, then down. He’d folded his hands behind his back and his heart was pounding.

“No you won’t. Because if you do, you’ll go to jail. Now I hope that maybe you find God, or perhaps some sort of structure to keep you in line. Maybe the Military, like your stepfather.” The superintendent said, making it a point to emphasize the word ‘stepfather’ which made Jake ball his fists behind his back. Kenny noticed that and clapped a hand on the young man’s shoulder, rubbing firmly to ease the tension. 

“Yessir.” Jake agreed softly, not daring to look anyone in the eyes.

“You're dismissed.” The superintendent waved a hand and sat at his desk. Jake had nearly gotten expelled. He wasn’t going to take anyone talking shit about his brother, especially not some dumb football jock who’s dad is rich and gets everything handed to him. Jake wouldn’t fucking have it. He was just sorry that Tyler didn’t see him knock the kid senseless. He’d be proud of him for five seconds and then once Tyler heard what his punishment was, he’d be pissed. Jake started praying in the truck on the way home, because it was going to be rough on an out of school suspension just before graduation.

“Jake. I swear to god, boy, you better figure somethin’ out.” Kenny’s voice was rough, and stern as he drove out of the school parking lot. 

“I’m sorry, Kenny...dad...I’m sorry...” Jake said, twiddling with his thumbs and watching as they passed some of the Emory Family’s wheatfields. 

“I know you are Jake but damn it, why’d you have to do it? You couldn’t just let it go. You need to get that temper under control.” Kenny said, sighing heavily.

“I’m sorry...” Jake said, again, his tone apologetic and coming out almost flustered. He didn’t know how to not defend his family. He didn’t know how to not stand up for them.

“Y’know, maybe the Navy would be good for you. Give you somethin’ to expel all that pent up bullshit on.” Kenny looked pointedly at Jake, taking a left instead of a right toward their house. They headed to the Navy Recruitment office to see what Jake could do from there. 

Later that day, the green pickup rumbled along, the engine louder than ever. Jake knew it needed an oil change when it did that, and he would get around to it eventually, but he was trying to make sure he got top marks in class and stayed in tip top shape. Once he graduated, he was off to the Navy. And Tyler, well, Tyler was off to start his rodeo career. 

Jake popped a CD in and a twangy country song began to play as he glanced over at his brother, who was mouthing the words with a huge smile on his face and his arm slung out the window. Tyler shot him a look, full of pride but also concern. Tyler was ecstatic that Jake was joining the Navy, but he was also worried. What if he got deployed and got killed? But he knew it was what Jake needed to rein him in. Tyler had to push those thoughts out of his mind for now and enjoy being with his brother instead.

Jake sat on the couch at his parent’s house, feeling the depression creep in and slowly consume him. Samantha and Jeanie had gone to the store and he was glad of that, knowing that his mother approved of his fiance. Kenny was out mowing the lawn, having had Tyler fix the tractor for him. 

Ballast, Jake’s dog through and through, sat with his head on Jake’s lap, his ever deepening amber eyes continually checking in on his owner. He would whine every once in a while and then poke Jake if he stopped petting him. Jake sighed heavily and then began to speak to the young dog.

“I don’t wanna go back to California bud. I wanna fly again...but I wanna stay here. I didn’t know how much I missed it here until I came back. I don’t know if I can say goodbye so soon.” He murmured, his fingers scratching behind Ballast’s ears. The dog shifted, his brows furrowing. Jake couldn't get over how expressive the dog was sometimes. “And...I’m freakin’ out about Sam...like, how can she not be pregnant already? It’s me, right? I’ve gotta be shootin’ blanks because there’s no way such a perfect, gorgeous, beautiful fucking woman could have anything wrong with her... fuck . I know I’m the problem...I’m always the problem.”

Ballast raised his head, staring straight into Jake’s eyes, amber burning through green steadily like a forest fire. Jake smiled weakly, his hand running down the dog’s back. Ballast stretched up and licked Jake’s cheek, then went to nibble on his ear. Jake laughed and rubbed the dog’s head, then pulled him into a hug. Ballast put a paw over Jake’s shoulder. In that moment, Jake felt like he was eighteen again, a fucking delinquent helpless to do anything else but hug the damn family dog because she’d been the only one not disappointed in him. 

As Jake wallowed in his sadness, Ballast sat quietly, across his lap, offering the same support that the dog’s dad had that first time he’d met Ryker. In so many ways, Ballast had become so much like Maddox, and Jake was thankful for that. There were things that dog had opened up in him, scars that he’d scratched at that Jake couldn’t put away. Jake’s anger, which always manifested because he was being protective, was the biggest one, and the harshest. 

“You get mad at him, he’s gonna come at you, Jake. He’s gonna take you down a peg. Control your anger.”

Jake’s gaze settled on Ballast. He took a deep, shuddering breath, which the dog noticed and again, he curled closer to his human. Ballast didn’t give a fuck about the other two dogs. Not one single fuck. He only cared for Jake. He’d been particularly sticky with Sam lately though and Jake didn’t know if that was an indication of anything. Jake was snapped from his introspection then by the front door opening. Rocco and Muster barked once each, and then went back to laying down together in a warm ball.

“Hey.” Sam said, as she helped Jeanie bring in the groceries that she’d gotten. Jake snapped his fingers at Ballast, who moved off his lap and heeled to Jake as he helped grab more bags. Jeanie wanted to get a lot while she had the help, knowing that Tyler and Georgia wouldn’t be along to visit for a little while with Jaycen. They’d have to go up toward Stillwater to see their grandson, which wasn’t a problem, but they knew Tyler and Georgia were also busy with work too. 

“Hi.” Jake kissed her on the cheek as he took some of the bags, placing them on the counter. Sam began putting food away as Jake went out to get more bags. Jeanie sighed as she met him at the bottom of the stairs.

“Momma. You go sit. I’ll grab the bags.” He said softly, taking them gently from her. She smiled as she patted his arm and used him to help her up the stairs. 

“You’re always a good boy, Jake. Thank you. I’ll rest my feet and then start on dinner. You should eat before you head out.” She said and Jake nodded. He grabbed the rest of the groceries, and helped Sam put them away. All three of the dogs had risen and Jake decided to take them for a short walk to the end of the driveway and back. Sam elected to go with him.

“You seem off today. What’s wrong?” She asked, wrapping her arm around his waist. He placed his around her shoulders and they matched steps as they walked. 

“Don’t wanna leave...” He murmured and Sam nodded.

“I know you don’t but we have to go home at some point.” She said, pulling him closer. He let out a deep sigh again, feeling his anxiety bubble. Why was he anxious?

“This is my home.” His brows furrowed and Sam drew back slightly. He knew he shouldn’t have said it.

“What about my home, Jake?” She asked, stopping. He came to a halt too and she stepped away from him. He shook his head, reaching for her.

“I know...I’m sorry. I’m just...I don’t know...” He couldn’t express his thoughts to words that would be what she wanted to hear at that moment. Sam wanted to go home. The only thing tethering Jake to Miramar was her. Of course there was his promotion and all that, but he could be a Lieutenant Commander anywhere in the world. He didn’t have to stay specifically in Miramar to do that. He could be stationed in Oklahoma City at Tinker Air Force Base, or he could be even closer in Enid, at Vance Air Force Base, which employed an active flying academy. If he wanted to teach, he could be closer to home instead of being stationed in Miramar. But he also understood that it was where Sam felt the most comfortable. And Jake would be uncomfortable so that she could be okay. He’d promised her that much.

This was the fucking worst. 

Jake said goodbye to Jeanie and Kenny and he held it together. He was okay with that because he’d left a hundred times before, but this, this was fucking heartbreaking. 

He hugged his brother tightly, too tight. So tight that Tyler had to pry him away. When his brother looked into his eyes, the matching sage green meeting, his brow furrowed and he sighed.

“It’ll be okay, Jakey. You’ll be back soon enough.” Tyler’s voice was low, at a whisper, because he knew Jake didn’t want to leave. He knew Jake wanted to stay here, but he couldn’t. Sam was tugging his heartstrings so fucking hard to go back to California, that it was overriding everything in Jake that made him want to stay. Tyler's voice was quiet because he knew Jake didn’t want Sam to hear what he had to say next. “If somethin’...anythin’...doesn’t work out, you will always have a place here, with me and Gee.”

Jake pulled away then, Tyler’s words stinging. He knew what Tyler meant though. He knew if things got rough and he had to retreat somewhere for a while again, that he could come here. Tyler was well aware that Jake never wanted to leave Samantha, but he also knew that if Jake needed to get away, this home would be open to him for that.

“And you call me more than ya have been the past couple years. Text me as much as you want. I don’t mind.” Tyler’s words were comforting then. 

“I know. Thank you.” Jake said, taking a hold of his brother’s shoulders then, his grip like heavy stone. He backed away from Tyler, only about a foot or so, allowing Georgia to step in smoothly with baby Jaycen. Jake’s eyes grew misty as he gently let his fingers brush over the little boy’s head. He had nearly a full head of hair now, short and sandy brown like his father’s. The boy reached for him, and Jake offered a single finger, which Jaycen wrapped a chubby hand around and giggled as he did so. Georgia watched her husband’s brother’s expression dissolve into one of anguish. Jake could only weakly smile at Georgia, whom he then kissed on the cheek softly before he reached for Sam. 

“Thank you for everything. We’ll be back soon.” Sam said softly to Tyler as she drew back from his warm embrace. She’d already said her goodbyes to Georgia and Jaycen, but as she took Jake’s hand, she carefully hugged the other woman once more. 

Ballast and Grits were just like the brothers, getting in one last play session before they parted ways. It was like the dogs knew. Muster had become fast friends with Waffles, and Pancake had taken a liking to Rocco, but the four quieter dogs all sat in a line near the truck, waiting for a signal. Tyler snapped his fingers for the cattle dogs and Jake opened the back seat for his. He lifted Rocco in and then shut the door. Grits glanced up and whined softly to Tyler, who reached down and patted the red dog’s head.

Georgia saw longing in Samantha’s eyes as she took one last look at little Jaycen as her and Jake piled into the already packed truck with the dogs, their Christmas gifts, packed bags, and some food for along the way in a giant cooler. Georgia would miss that truck, but most of all she would miss her husband’s brother and the wonderful women he’d found. She would miss the dogs and how well they fit in with theirs. 

“Drive safe! Let us know when you get home!” Tyler exclaimed, and as Jake backed out of the space in the driveway and turned around, he waved. Sam did too, and Tyler and Georgia waved back and then they both glanced down at their son and the dogs, who had gathered at their feet. 

The Owens household would be a little too quiet for a little while after that.

Jake and Sam drove in silence, the dogs all comfortably napping in the back seat. Their journey home would be around twenty hours of driving and making some pit stops along the way to the Texas Air and Space Museum, the New Mexico Route 66 Museum, the Japanese Garden of Friendship in Phoenix, Arizona, and a short detour to Joshua Tree National Park before finally reaching Miramar.

Jake elected to do the first part of the drive, as he felt like he just needed to. He'd put on a spotify playlist that Tyler had made and shared with him, plenty of country music to keep his thoughts on the road and just a little distracted. Sam was scrolling on her phone and at some point, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, she stopped and placed it on the center console, her gaze settling on the landscape and fading light out the window. 

“Hey.” Jake's voice startled her slightly, but he reached across the console and she intertwined her fingers with his. It was an action he'd done a million times before but this time it had a certain weight to it. There was an uneasy tension between them, and they could both feel it. It was suffocating.

“It's my turn now because I know you're not okay.” Sam said softly, as she squeezed his hand firmly. Jake's eyes left the road for a second and then focused back.

“What's that mean?” He asked, tone flat. She shifted beside him. 

“I know you don't want to go home...to California. I'm forcing you to. I know that.” She admitted and he glanced at her again, but didn't reply, so she continued. “I'm sorry. I just can't leave for good yet.”

Jake's brows knitted and he felt like he should pull over, but he wanted to get to their hotel. His voice came out slightly shaky and it made Sam tear up.

“I told you when I first came home...that I would shatter myself to pieces for you. That I would take all of your pain and get rid of it. I can still do that...but you then need to be patient with me because I need space after everything is put on me. It's why I don't hang out with my detachment sometimes. It's why I like being at home with you and just sitting doin’ fuck all.”

“I’m not asking you to take it all...” She murmured.

“Aren’t you? I told you. I am comfortable in Oklahoma. In Arkansas.” Jake’s knuckles tightened on the steering wheel. Sam noticed this and she placed her other hand on his forearm, rubbing up and down, trying to quell the frustration she could feel building within him.

“We have to go home though. Your job is there. My mother is there. She just lost her husband. I just lost my...” Sam’s words came out choked and she wiped her cheeks with the sleeve of her shirt. Jake’s jaw worked as he felt tears sting his eyes knowing that he was upsetting her. 

“I’m sorry...I don’t wanna fight, Samantha. We’re both tired, we’re both upset, and I don’t think we should keep talking about this while I’m driving. When we get to the hotel...can we pick this up again? Please?” Jake asked, sage green flicking nervously over to her. She nodded and went to take her hand from his but he wouldn’t let her and instead lifted it and touched his lips to the back, leaving them there for a few moments before resting their entwined hands on the console. “Don’t pull away, please. Don’t lea...leave me...” He stuttered.

“I’m not going to leave you, Jake.  I love you...I’m just...having a hard time with this too...you probably don’t realize it but i was happy there too...but I feel obligated to go home. My home is not your home, I know that. But I wish I was your home .”

“Fuck...Sam...Samantha...you...you are my home. But sometimes I just don’t feel like I belong there, and I hate that...”

“Why...why would you ever feel that way? Am I not enough for you?”

“You are. You will always be. But I feel like I’ve been failing you. I feel like I came back damaged and it’s just been a fucking downhill slope that I keep sliding down and I can’t get back up...and then we came here and I don’t know, I suddenly didn’t feel like that. I felt like I brought you down here and that you were finally safe. We were finally safe.”

“Do you not want to fly again? Is that what this is about?”

“No I do...but I don’t know that I want to be deployed again. I am fucking terrified that I won’t come home...I’ve lost enough pilots, enough friends...when do I not come home, huh? And then what...I leave you and a kid without a husband and father? I can’t even bear the thought of that. It makes my chest hurt like hell, holy shit.”

“How do you become an Admiral then? Do you even still want that?”

“Yes. I do. And I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t fucking know.” Jake’s voice trembled with his last words and then Sam’s free hand made it’s way to his chest, as she leaned slightly over the center of the truck.

“Jake. I love you more than anything. But you need to talk to me. You need to meet me halfway. You cannot keep these feelings you’re having from me. You can’t keep going to therapy and not talking there either. You need to let me all the way in. No matter how ugly the bottom of your soul is...you need to let me meet that part of you .” Sam’s voice trailed off and then she rubbed over the front of his chest, feeling his heart pounding like it was trying to jump right out of it. They let the silence fall over them, Jake trying to figure out exactly how to accomplish that without scaring her away. He couldn’t ever be without her again.

Tyler sat quietly on the couch, Grits on the back as usual, and Jaycen sleeping soundly in his arms. He glanced down at Georgia, her head against his shoulder, her breath coming out leisurely. Pancake was laid across her lap, her arm over the dog’s back, and Waffles was on the arm next to Tyler, her snout as close as she could get to the little boy without disturbing him. 

“I already miss them.” Tyler murmured, taking a deep breath in and letting it out slowly, shakily.

“Me too. But we have this wonderful little boy to help keep us busy. Until the next time that they come back.” She said softly, rubbing Pancake’s shoulders. The dog sighed and furrowed her brows at Georgia, which made her smile. 

“Yeah. You’re right. And some other stuff to keep us busy too. Found a truck for Kate. We just gotta go look at it, make sure it’s okay.” He said, tilting his head as Jaycen shifted in his arms but did not wake.

“That’s good. She can stop trying to crash yours and Boone’s.” She said, which made a chuckle rumble up from Tyler’s chest.

“Yeah exactly. And we’ll plan a day to go look at a truck for you. I promise. I’m glad you got rid of the Denali though. I was afraid of you towing with it.” 

“When am I gonna be towing?” She asked, shifting against him so that she was slightly closer and Pancake did the same.

“Don’t know. Figured you might wanna take Tulsa to a couple places while you’re not pregnant.”

“Well...you mean before my belly gets big again.” She smirked.

“What?” Tyler shot a sly smile at her.

“I took a test this morning. I’m pregnant again, Ty.” Her lips turned up into a wide grin and Tyler carefully turned so that he could kiss her.

“Oh fuck. I’m gonna cry, darlin’.” His voice became a whisper.

“Well you had a hand in it, silly.”

“I know but you’re the one who’s doing all the work. I’m just the...well...y’know.”

“The very handsome stud?” Georgia raised a brow and smirked. Tyler's lips turned up again, his mouth dropping open.

“Well, darlin’, I’ll take that as a compliment.”

“You should. You’re quite the specimen.” She mused, making him chuckle and shake his head. His chest filled with warmth as he gazed at his beautiful wife and then down at his adorable son. He opened his mouth to speak but then stopped, wanting to enjoy the happiness that was overflowing in the air, within their little family of two legged and four legged creatures.

Summary: After Taehyung kidnapped you, you promised yourself would never allow yourself to fall in love with him. It seems Taehyung is determined to make you break that promise.

Authors note: this was inspired by a prompt from @kpopgirlbtssvt​ to another writer which was about the reader coming to taehyung for cuddles after being unable to sleep bc she’s sick. I just thought it was such a cute prompt so I decided to write something for it as well <3

You can’t sleep. Five months ago, that wouldn’t have surprised you. After all, having been kidnapped and held hostage by a stranger who said he was in love with you, it would have been more odd if you could sleep easily. But now, coming up to six months in Taehyung’s care, though you had stopped counting after the fourth, you usually find it easy to sink into sleep. The bed Taehyung has given you was much nicer than your old one, the mattress doesn’t have springs that dig into your back and the duvet actually keeps you warm at night. In all honesty, that wasn’t the only thing that improved when Taehyung stole you away.

He took you from your one-bedroom apartment, shitty and way too overpriced for a barely-graduated collage student, even if you were working four separate jobs at the time to make ends meet. Taehyung’s luxury apartment was certainly a lot nicer, and it is less stressful, not having to worry about money or other people, of course, you haven’t seen any other people since Taehyung took you. 

It had taken you a long time to gain this relaxed view of your kidnapping. Honestly, you’re incredulous yourself, but you have come to terms with the fact that you’re never going to escape. It isn’t that bad, living with Taehyung. He always makes sure you’re comfortable and cared for. You have everything your heart desires, except a connection to the outside world. Despite his almost daily declarations of love and desire for you, he had vowed not to touch you. The very night he took you, he promised he would only kiss you once you explicitly asked for it. 

You made a vow too, that night. You promised yourself you would never allow yourself to fall in love with Kim Taehyung. And you were beginning to fear you would have to break your promise.

It’s just because I’m sick, you reason to yourself, I’m not thinking straight, so of course this won’t matter. You wilfully ignore the fact that, despite the fever raging through your body, you’re still mostly coherent. Probably could be completely coherent, if you weren’t so tired. But so far you have been finding it exceedingly difficult to sleep. When you were a young child, your mother would always hold you through the night when you were sick, stroking your hair and singing a soft lullaby to help you drift off. Obviously, going to your mother is out of the question, but the desperation for human contact is a growing urge poisoning your mind.

That same desperation leads your footsteps down the hall at half three in the morning to wait outside Taehyung’s bedroom door. You raise your fist to knock, but hesitate. Are you really going to ask your kidnapper to comfort you? To cuddle you in his bed? It doesn’t matter that he’s attractive, which he is, very attractive, possibly the most beautiful man in the world-

The door swings open, the shock causing you to overbalance and tip directly into the naked chest of whom you had been previously calling the most beautiful man in the world. Taehyung holds you against him for a brief moment, before gently setting you back on your feet with a soft chuckle. 

“I could hear you padding up the hall.” He explains, cooing slightly at the sight of your flushed cheeks, glowing in the darkness. “What do you need, baby?”

“You.” The word slips out before you can stop it, and Taehyung’s brows rise so high they disappear into his hairline. He has the most delighted expression on his face that you have ever seen.

“Well, what do you need me for, baby?” His deep purring voice makes you shiver slightly, which triggers another shiver, due to your illness. Taehyung’s brows shoot down again and furrow, as he shoos you into his room, grabbing a blanket off the bed to wrap around you.

“You’re sick.” The blanket smells like him, and it distracts you as he flutters around you, checking your temperature with his hand and trying to see if you’d lost weight — you’ve only been sick a day, but Taehyung worries about anything that happens to the most important thing in his life. 

“Why didn’t you tell me?” He demands, and you instantly feel bad.

“I didn’t want you to worry.”

“But now you’re outside my door.”

“Well, actually, I’m inside your room, now.” You quip and he huffs impatiently, even as a slight smile tugs on his lips.

“What changed your mind?” Here, you become more bashful, trying to avoid his gaze by looking downwards but he tilts your head up with a gentle yet firm grip on your chin. “I need an answer, baby.”

“Well…I…” He hums impatiently, “I couldn’t sleep. My mother would always cuddle me when I was sick, but now I don’t have anyone.”

“You have me.” Taehyung responds immediately.

“…I know. That’s- that’s why I’m here.” Your confidence falters a few times, but you manage to finish your statement. For a second, Taehyung looks confused, but then the widest grin lights up his face — not that you find it endearing or adorable or lovable or whatever — and he holds the corners of his blanket wrapped around you and tugs you closer to him.

“You came here… in the middle of the night… to cuddle with me?” Taehyung sounds like he can barely believe it, and you groan in embarrassment, burying your flaming cheeks in his chest.

“Yes. Now, please, just do it without being too smug.” 

“What would I have to be smug about, my love?” He asks, smugly. 

“Taaeeeee,” you whine, knowing that any term of endearment was his weak spot, “I don’t feel well. Please don’t tease me.” You pout cutely and he coos at you, gathering you up and sweeping you onto the bed where you immediately make yourself comfortable, his scent surrounding you, making you feel better already.

He pauses for a second at the foot of the bed, watching you burrow into his sheets with dark eyes. He then gets into the bed beside you — still shirtless, you note with equal parts excitement and horror — and settles on his back. Before you can even move, he has tugged you onto his chest, with your head against his heartbeat, and his strong arms encircling your waist. Your legs tangle together as you tilt up your head to look at him. He is gazing at you with the most love-filled, adoring expression you had ever seen.

You lay your head back on his chest, vision beginning to swim as your sleepiness overtakes you, and you wonder idly, how bad could it be to let yourself fall in love?

You wake up surrounded by warmth and comfort, held protectively in a pair of arms which you never want to leave. In your sleepy state, your subconscious recognises your love for Taehyung and you start burrowing further into his hold, placing lazy kisses wherever you can reach with your eyes still closed.

Taehyung releases a low-pitched growl, the vibration finally waking you up. It takes you a second to realise what you are doing and you sit up hurriedly, cheeks painted a bright red. You then realise that you are effectively straddling Taehyung’s lap, which explains the smug expression on his face, and you try to move off him. He quickly sits up as well, drawing his knees up and pinning you between his legs and his torso. Your hands, lying ineffectually on the rumpled sheets, come up to rest on his shoulders.

You give a pathetic attempt at pushing him away — clearly you don’t actually want him to go — and he laughs, only drawing you closer to him in retaliation until your noses bump. 

“Good morning baby, or, should I say, good afternoon?” Your eyes flick to the clock on the bedside table and you gasp. It was half past noon! You, again, attempt to scramble off his lap, but he stills your squirming by brushing his nose up the side of your neck.

“Don’t worry baby, you needed your sleep. I would gladly stay in bed the whole day with you, if I didn’t have to feed and take care of you.” With that, he gently shifts you onto the bed and stands up, already heading for the door. You frown, and get up to follow him.

“You don’t need to take care of me.”

“Of course I do. I always take care of my possessions, and you, my love, are the most important. Just go back to sleep, I’ll bring you lunch in bed.” Ignoring how the casual possessiveness makes your lower stomach clench pleasantly, you pout, though he can’t see it as he is turned away from you, heading to the kitchen. 

“I don’t want to stay in bed. I’d miss you.” The words slip out before you had a chance to go over them in your head and Taehyung immediately turns around, an adoring expression taking over his face again. 

“You are being a very good girl.” He purrs, looping his arms around your lower back and tugging you into him. Since you’re unwell, you allow yourself the indulgence, and raise yourself on your tiptoes to tuck your face into the crook of his neck. He walks both of you back slowly and then, without warning, spins you around and lifts you up, placing you on the counter with ease. He laughs when you yelp in shock, both at the sudden movement and the coolness of the counter, though it does help soothe your heated skin. 

“What do you want for lunch, baby?” You shake your head,

“I don’t feel well enough to have lunch.” 

“Baby, you have to eat something.” Taehyung sighs, and you give him your best puppy-dog eyes, “What about just rice? It won’t make you too nauseous, but it’ll stop you from feeling hungry.” You think about it for a second before nodding. He rewards your obedience with a sunny smile and you try to ignore how it makes your heart flutter almost painfully. 

Taehyung warns you several times to be careful as he starts boiling the water and preparing the rice. He even warns you about avoiding the cooking knives on the other counter because ‘those things are sharp, baby, I can’t let you get hurt.’ Try as you might, you can’t make yourself view him as overprotective and controlling, knowing now that he only wants to keep you safe because he cares so much about you. 

While you wait for the rice to steam, he quizzes you relentlessly about your symptoms.

“Do you have a headache?” 

“Not really.”

“Do your joints ache?”

“Do my joints ache?” You ask incredulously, “Did you become a doctor or something?” He shoots you an unamused look.

“Answer the question, baby.”

“Yes, my joints ache.”

“Have you been having hot flushes?” As he quizzes you, your eyes drifted down to his still-bare torso, all the way down to the defined V that led into the waistband of his sweatpants.

“A little.” 

“Is your throat sore?”

“Not really.”

“Not really? This is a yes or no question and if you can’t say no, that means yes.”

“I mean, it hurt yesterday, but not today.”

“Your throat hurt yesterday and you didn’t tell me?!” 

“I didn’t think you would care.” Taehyung mutters what sounds like a prayer for patience and then tugs you forwards so you perch on the edge of the counter. Even sitting higher up, he is still taller than you as he crushes you into his chest.

He holds you for what feels like forever, and when he pulls back it is only to press his forehead against yours. His breath fans over your cheeks as his eyes gaze into yours.

“Of course I care, baby. I care about everything you do, or have done, or ever will do. If you sneeze, I want to know. If you think you hurt your ankle, I want to know. If you saw a fucking cloud out the window that you thought looked like a dog, I want to know. Because I love you. I love you and I will keep telling you that until you understand it because, to me, loving someone means they are the most important thing in your life, do you understand? You are the most important thing in my life, and I want to know everything there is to know about you. I know you aren’t used to affection, but you’ll have to get used to it because I’m not going anywhere and-” 

You cut him off by pressing your lips to his. He stands still, frozen for a second, but when you whimper softly against his lips, he takes control of the kiss, forcing his tongue into your mouth and you melt. His lips slant against yours perfectly and you can feel his hands slowly travelling down to cup your ass. Your own fingers tangle in his hair and start tugging it when he breaks away, giving you space to breathe while he marks your throat.

“Mmh, get back here.” You whine, and he chuckles against your neck.

“Have to mark you up, baby. Have to let everyone know you’re mine.”

“No one else is going to see me, anyway.” You protest, trying to drag him back up to your mouth. The feeling of him marking you was certainly amazing, but you have been waiting half a year to kiss Kim Taehyung and you aren’t about to stop anytime soon.

“You’re so desperate for my kiss, aren’t you?” His ego is swelling dangerously, but you can’t bring yourself to care.

“Yes, I am. Please kiss me, I’ve been holding myself back for so long, I’m desperate.” You beg shamelessly, and he growls against your throat before rearing up to claim your mouth again, wrapping your legs around his waist to lift you off the counter and pin you against the wall in one seamless movement. 

It is that moment the rice cooker chooses to go off, signalling the rice has finished steaming. Taehyung pulls away slightly, and then smirks when you chase after his lips. He allows you to steal a precious few more kisses before he sets you down on the floor, arms coming up to your waist automatically to steady you when you stumble slightly.

“Baby can’t even stand up without me, huh?” You can’t even deny his smug remark, instead choosing to hang onto his shoulder as he tries to go and check on the rice. “Baby, I have to go and check on the rice. You must be hungry.”

“Rice isn’t what I’m hungry for.” You muttered, and Taehyung’s short intake of breath was the only warning you got before you were pinned against the wall again.

“Naughty girl,” Taehyung purrs, his hand wrapped around your throat, tight enough to keep you still and submissive, but not completely cutting off your air supply. “Bad baby, saying all these naughty things when daddy is trying to be sweet to her.” You whimper, his muscular thigh is right in between your legs but when you try to grind yourself against him for some relief, he tightens his hold on your neck. 

“I think my baby needs to be taught a lesson.” 

“Yes, please- teach me, I need-”

“Please, what, my love?” You try to swallow but it’s difficult with his hand tightening on your throat, your vision begins to darken. 

“Baby, I’m still waiting on an answer here.” Taehyung prompts you. 

“I’m sorry… please- please teach me a lesson, daddy.” His gaze darkens, and you think he’s going to kiss you, you want him to kiss you, but he pulls away. His hand falls away from your throat and he returns to the rice cooker. You stay resting against the wall, trying to even your breathing, and Taehyung puts the rice into a bowl and gets chopsticks for you. 

He moves towards the seating area and you follow him, slightly confused. Your confusion deepens as he sits down on the armchair, rather than a loveseat. Maybe he wants you to sit on his lap? Thankfully, he doesn’t leave you confused for too long. 

“Kneel.” He smiles slightly at the sight of your wide eyes, and attempts to make himself clear. “Kneel by my feet, like the good little pet you are. I’ll feed you, baby, don’t worry.” You felt your knees bending and hitting the floor even before you fully registered his command. Taehyung felt a sense of victorious pride swelling within him as he watched you kneel for him obediently, your pretty lips open and waiting for him to feed you. To be honest, the sight of you on your knees for him made more than just his pride swell. He had been so patient for so long and it had all been worth it to have you as you are now, perfect and perfectly submissive. 

He feeds you the rice slowly, taking care not to give you too much at one time to avoid triggering a stomach ache. Even as your cheeks burn at the humiliation of kneeling at his feet like a dog, you felt a certain amount of comfort at the fact that he cares so much about you that he wants to look after you like this. Once the rice is finished, you yawn and lean against Taehyung’s leg, closing your eyes. You feel his hand start to card through your hair and you know that, if you were a cat, you’d definitely be purring right now. 

“Is my baby tired?” Taehyung questions softly and you nod, jostling his leg slightly.

“Can I take a nap?”

“Of course you can, my love. You have been so good today. My perfect girl.” He praises you as he helps you to your feet. You look up at him, and the breath you have just been taking in abandons you suddenly. 

He is so beautiful. He’s looking at you with such a tender, loving expression and you know in your heart, you have broken your promise to yourself.

You are in love with Kim Taehyung. 

You mask this self-revelation with a soft smile, untangling yourself from his arms and walking towards the hallway. You hear Taehyung following behind you, but choose not to acknowledge it. 

“Where do you think you’re going?” You pause, turning around to glance back at him.

“My bedroom. You said I could take a nap.” You pout, and Taehyung smirks,

“What makes you think I’m letting you go back there now that you’ve slept in my bed? Well- our bed.” He doesn’t give you a chance to answer the question before he sweeps you into his arms in bridal style, striding back to his room and depositing you on his bed. He sighs contentedly, watching you acquiesce and make yourself comfortable on the bed.

“You look so beautiful in my bed, my love. You will always sleep here from now on.” You nod sleepily, uncaring of his possessive tone, and make grabby hands at him, wanting him to join you and snuggle in bed. You hear a quiet chuckle before the mattress dips and you are gathered into his arms again. You have never felt so untroubled in all your life. 

He arranges you so that your head is resting on his chest, with your leg thrown over his hip, completely intertwined together, just the way he loves it, and how you are beginning to love too. You raise your head to look at him, finding his dark eyes already watching you affectionately. 

“Taehyung?” Your fever is making you woozy, along with the sleeping pills Taehyung had crushed into the rice. He didn’t want you to have trouble sleeping, and he knows what’s best for his little girl.

“Yes, baby?” He replies and you smile. You can barely see straight but you know you have to tell him something, something important. 

“I love you.” His eyes crinkle as he gives you a wide, boxy smile. It’s the last thing you see before you succumb to exhaustion, your smile still fixed on your lips as your eyes shut. Taehyung takes a second to admire your beauty, before leaning in to place a kiss on your forehead.

“I love you too, baby. Every day I’m so thankful that I was made for you, and you for me.”

It was a way to get their minds off what was going to happen later. They’re meeting the parents already. It doesn’t feel rushed, Robbe is sure of how much he loves Sander, but it’s a big step. He never met anyone’s parents before. 

And Robbe knows they’ll probably compare him to Britt, it’s only natural. He’s a little bit hungover, but he drank a lot of water when he woke up thinking about this special lunch already and he wasn’t expecting any more gifts, but then Sander asked him to close his eyes. 

Sometimes, Sander wakes up way too early. He had already left and returned to the flat, waking Robbe up with soft, wet kisses all the way from his back to his face. Sander had bought the lock and asked them to go to the bridge before going back to his place. It was a small and cheesy gesture, but it distracted Robbe enough. 

“You write it on one side and I’ll do the other.” Sander takes their lock from his inside pocket, giving it to Robbe as he searches for the pen. Robbe is a little cold, he’s definitely underdressed, but it’s fine, he hugs Sander’s arm and stays as close as he can to him to keep himself warm while he waits. 

There are a bunch of things he can write, but he goes with his first thought. Whatever putting a lock on a bridge might do to them or their relationship, Robbe just wants the bridge - or whoever is reading their message - to be sure that his main goal is to stay with Sander forever. 

It’s hard writing on a lock when you’re cold, the sharpie tip is a little too big and the lock not big enough. R & S, and he draws the heart around it, showing it to Sander. 

“Your turn.” Robbe gives him a quick kiss on his lips as Sander grabs the pen and the lock, smiling. 

In every universe. 

Sander struggles even more than Robbe, there’s a crease in between his eyebrows as he writes, but he also writes a lot more and Robbe can’t help how his heart grows inside his chest. 

It was a random conversation they had a long time ago, Robbe was just sharing a piece of those late-night thoughts he had and never shared with anyone and now it’s part of their story, a way to make life seem a little less scary during the bad nights or days. 

“You want to do it?” He asks and Robbe squeezes Sander’s arm in between his arms. 

“No, we have to do it together. You’ll hold it and I’ll lock it.” Sander kisses his forehead before walking closer to the rail, holding Robbe’s hand instead of letting him hug his arm, taking a few steps sideways to find the perfect spot.

They sit down, take some photos and finally put their lock in the tiny space they found that even has a nice view.

“We’ll be fine, ok? And if you feel uncomfortable or if you just wanna leave, just tell me and we’ll go.” Robbe pulls Sander down by his jacket, nodding his head. 

“Just...” He kisses Sander instead of trying to explain how his brain works, putting both hands very tightly around his neck, giving his boyfriend a long, lingering kiss just to make sure that they still fell like the best kind of fireworks and excitement. There’s just something about the way they kiss and how Robbe feels it in every inch of his body. 

“Come,” Sander purrs, touching Robbe’s lips again when he talks “let’s get this over with.”

Maybe Sander’s problem is that he can’t find one thing that he doesn’t like about Robbe. There’s one, but he knows Robbe didn’t mean those words, and besides that one second buried in the past, Sander thinks Robbe is perfect. 

That’s one of the reasons why he agreed with bringing Robbe to meet his overprotective parents so soon, just because he needs them to see just how perfect this boy is. 

Robbe was a nervous wreck just minutes ago, constantly pulling Sander back, keeping them away from the door, trying to postpone their lunch, distracting Sander with hot kisses and little whines. 

And now that they’re inside, he’s acting like the softest, kindest, cutest baby ever. 

He talks so softly, always with a shy smile, and he’s almost whispering, dealing so well when Sander’s mom constantly putting Britt in the middle of any subject by accident. She says sorry a million times and Robbe just shrugs and it’s so cute. He’s very patient and even offers himself to set the table for them, but Sander just needs a moment alone with him. 

So when Robbe gives him the plates to put on the table, he obeys, but holds Robbe’s hand, saying to his mom that they’ll be right back, Sander just wants him to see his bedroom. 

Sander wasn’t home for a few days and he ignores when his mom asks him to wait, getting inside his bedroom and closing the door behind Robbe, pushing him against it. 

“What-are you doing? Your mom is waiting for us...” Robbe doesn’t finish his sentence, putting his head to one side, letting Sander lick his neck slowly on the other side while opening his belt and unzipping Robbe’s pants in one quick movement. 

“Food is not ready yet...” Sander pushes Robbe’s jacket down to the floor, smiling against his cheek. “We have time.” 

His boyfriend has a cute smile on his lips that slowly goes away when he looks over Sander’s shoulder. Sander stops, and he can see Robbe’s eyes going from one place to the next, walking to the side to go explore whatever he’s seeing. 

Sander watches as Robbe walks slowly, looking around carefully, his fingertips touching his open drawers and he stops at his table, grabbing the one thing Sander didn’t want him to see. 

Britt gave him a big frame with a collage of their photos together, including the photos they took the night he cheated on Robbe with her, Robbe makes sure to carefully touch every photo, his thumb taking more time on the picture of Britt using Sander’s jacket. 

“She gave me this and I didn’t have time to throw it away.” Sander takes the frame away from Robbe’s hands, putting it behind himself, away from Robbe’s eyes. 

“You don’t have to throw it away. There are some of her clothes in your drawers too...” Robbe points at the dresser that is behind Sander, where his tv stands, right in front of his bed but Sander doesn’t look back to check the information. Robbe’s eyes get so small and sad when he’s not feeling too good, you can instantly tell when he’s not happy. 

His mom probably made this mess while she was looking for any clues of where he was days ago, opening every drawer, putting all his notebooks on his table. Sander is sure she didn’t mean to let everything that belongs to Britt in plain sight, but he hates that Robbe saw it anyway. 

“I want to. There’s no point in having this here.” The frame makes a loud noise when it hits the floor, but Sander doesn’t care, using his hand for better things, gently pulling Robbe closer by his waist, going back to what they were doing a minute ago. 

Robbe whines and that’s all Sander needs to hear, smiling against Robbe’s lips as he pushes him to sit on the table with his legs wide open so they can press their hips together. 

“It’s just the two of us, remember?” Sander thought about making a joke of it, but he knows how insecure Robbe is about Britt and Sander gave him so many reasons for it and he’ll never forgive himself for it, but at least he’ll always be here to remind Robbe that they’re together, there’s nobody else for him. 

“Nothing feels as good as this...” He slowly slips his hand under Robbe’s shirt and inside his jeans, grabbing him and gently rubbing his palm against the front of Robbe’s underwear, making him open his mouth and slowly let the air out. 

“Your mom...” Robbe manages to whisper, but his short nails dig in the nape of Sander’s neck and he is sure Robbe doesn’t really care about anyone else but Sander. 

“She can wait. You can’t.” 

Robbe gives him a coy smile as a response, with his flushed cheeks, melting it down to put his head on Sander’s shoulder. 

“You’re gonna sleep here with me tonight. I need your smell in my bed.” Sander smiles, nibbling his ear.

tenderness is in the hands

The Lallemant Theatre looks half dilapidated from the street. Old fashioned, with faded vintage posters in dull, scratched up frames outside, and half the light bulbs blown out, throwing odd shadows on the movie titles.  

Eliott is there at least once a week.

The scuffed up wooden floors feel like home. Golden walls littered with more decades old posters, velvet love seats in deep red and purple scattered at odd intervals along the sides of the room, the scents of melted butter and bleach inescapable and constant.

“There you are. I was worried you were dead in a ditch,” says the only other person in the building. Eliott, before he’s had a chance to lift his head to find him, grins on instinct. Lucas’ voice, lilting and teasing, washes away the bad mood this week has left him with.

“Serious bodily harm is the only thing that would keep me from you,” he allows. Lucas just scowls, bristles, and puts aside the magazine in his hands. Eliott keeps smiling. It’s hard to predict exactly how Lucas will react when he says things like that, but whatever response he gets is a treasure.

“You’re almost late, you know.”

Eliott finally reaches the counter, places his hands on it and leans over a bit. Lucas’ hair is defying gravity, his eyes bright under the lighting, and a red plaid scarf that would contrast delightfully with his skin is curled next to the keyboard. Eliott wriggles his eyebrows. “You’d wait for me though, right?” Lucas rolls his eyes, so Eliott wages forward. “What’s on tonight?”

“Some Australian horror.” Lucas runs a hand through his hair, some of his fingernails flashing with chipped colour. “I’m not sure if you’ll like it, to be honest.”

Eliott hums vaguely and pulls out his wallet, finds a creased note between a collection of abandoned loyalty cards and faded concert tickets. The ticket stub he gets in exchange has a thick yellow line down the side, and the hand giving it to him has badly painted nails, each one a different shade of green.

“You’re really bad at that,” he says, nodding to Lucas’ hand. Lucas squints his eyes, raises his chin a little.

“I had to use my left hand.”

“Uh huh. Let’s see your other hand, then.” The other hand in question immediately disappears from view. From the way he shifts, there’s a good chance Lucas is sitting on it.

Eliott grins in triumph. “There’s no shame in being truly terrible at things, Lucas.”

“I suppose you would know a thing or two about it.”

Valiantly, Eliott lets that slide, stuffs the ticket in his pocket. The colour changes every month or so, and soon he’ll have enough of them saved to do - something. A collage, a sculpture, something worthy of this building, of the memories inside its walls. “Why don’t you think I’ll like the movie?”

“I’ve only seen pieces, but it doesn’t seem to have any… sincerity in it. Which I know you don’t have a lot of tolerance for.”

“You remember that?” Not a lot of people actually listen to him when he talks about film, the thread sometimes unspooling too quickly, tangling and looping, and making it hard for anyone to follow easily.

Lucas expression goes warm, kind, and something boarding on sympathetic. “I remember everything you say, Eliott.” There’s an implied obviously in the air and, well, no one would blame him for the way his heart beat rushes, especially when Lucas says his name like that, affectionate, weighty, like it’s valuable, like it matters.

Eliott looks to the side, coughs, brings the lighter out of his pocket just to have something to fiddle with.

“Has anyone else got a ticket for it?”

The way Lucas shakes his head makes his hair dance. “Just you. How much popcorn do you want?”

Eliott shoots the popcorn machine a look, its yellow glow a physical presence in the room. He can almost feel the sheer quantity of butter clogging up his veins from here. Simultaneously they take the couple steps to the side where the confectionery part of the counter technically starts.

“Depends, how hungry are you?” he asks, smirks, when Lucas has the audacity to look surprised Eliott is asking.

“Who says I’m joining you? I have a job to do, you know.”

It’s a good argument, but one that would probably work better if they were in a theatre that had more than roughly fifteen customers a week, most of them not at 9pm on a Wednesday.

“You would rather sit out here doing magazine quizzes and waiting for customers that don’t exist than sit next to me for a few hours and prove just how bad you are with accents?”

“You’re so annoying, and I have nothing to prove to you. “

Eliott softens. “I know you don’t. So how hungry are you?”

Without argument, Lucas shoots the popcorn a longing look. “So fucking hungry. Don’t worry,” he adds, flaps his hand like he can reverse Eliott’s move to take his wallet out again. “it’s included in your ticket price.”

A blatant lie, but Eliott doesn’t call him on it, just shrugs. Lucas nods and starts piling popcorn into the biggest box they have, the cardboard checkered orange and white. Lucas’ maman, the owner, seems to love colour, the theatre drenched in vibrancy, texture, calling out to a city that’s too blind to see it.

When Lucas passes the box over, their fingers overlap, and Eliott sets the food down in favour of getting a closer look at his hands. It’s a good thing Lucas has started painting his nails, he doesn’t have to reach for an excuse. It’s a lot smoother than Lucas’s I think there’s a bug, oh no wait my mistake, I’ve always liked tattoos, why do you have mardi written on your knee? It’d been a warm day, on the cusp of summer, the arms of their singlets plunging low to their waists, both of their legs’ exposed,  and it was a good thing Lucas moved first because Eliott had been trying to find reasons for why Lucas really should stop sitting properly and drape his leg’s across Eliott’s. He’s as shameless as Lucas, really, just hides it better.

And this, this is slightly subtler. He leans down like he’s properly inspecting Lucas’ hands, face serious, touch gentle, and Lucas doesn’t resist, bends easily to make room for Eliott’s whims.

The colour isn’t really that badly done, really, but still.

“You can practice on me, if you want,” Eliott offers. Nicely, in his opinion, but Lucas’ eyebrows furrow.

“I’m really bad at it.”

“…Which is why I offered.”

He presses his lips together. “I don’t mind being bad when it’s my own body, but you have nice hands,” Eliott chokes on nothing, Lucas mouth quirks. “I don’t want to ruin them.”

“You couldn’t ruin anything.”

“Well, some things,” Eliott doesn’t think he imagined the seconds Lucas takes to flick his eyes down Eliott’s body, “but if you insist, I’ll gladly use you to experiment on.”

Eliott doesn’t know when they started having, how they keep having, multiple conversations at once, but it’s a bit too much. His hand automatically moves to tap at his lips, a nervous tic, but, right, they’re still holding - no, not holding, just touching - hands. He can feel the edge of a callous on one of Lucas’ fingers. Drums? Guitar? Wire sculpture? Carpentry? Before he can ask further, Lucas slips his hand away and he jumps the counter.

“Come on, I don’t want to keep you out late.”

Lucas sets off towards the splintered hall that most of the theatres spring off, and Eliott follows him automatically, absently reclaiming the popcorn when Lucas picks up a jacket, presumably his own. “You don’t?”

“Well, not for this,” the tips of his ears go slightly red, but nothing else. One day Eliott will make him blush for real, and it will be a beautiful day. “Isn’t a regular sleep schedule good for you? For stability, I mean.”

“I don’t remember telling you that.”

“That’s because you didn’t. I did some research, after you told me. The Wikipedia article for bipolar disorder is very well written.”

“No WebMD?”

Lucas shakes his head. “Yahoo Answers was very educational, though.”

“Well, primary sources are important.”

Lucas takes a right turn, a direction that can only take them to two cinemas: the Burgandy and the Woolf. The former reasonably large, wide seats, a bronze curtain unveiling the screen, and the width between aisles just that little bit too small for his liking. The latter is smaller, screen half the size, the walls dark blue, ceiling tall, and a collection of deep couches to seat the audience. It is, undeniably, Eliott’s favourite, and the way Lucas is looking, pleased, content, a slight bounce to his walk that usually isn’t there - Eliott has to resist the urge wrap his arms around him and, possibly, never let go. The ecosystem here would support them; they’d never have to leave.

The next time he glances over at Lucas his heart stutters when he finds those blue eyes already trained on him, eager, adoring. The barriers between them erode the deeper they roam into the guts of the building. The architecture is tricky, clever, expands beyond the barriers granted to it by the city, and something similar happens to them. Eliott feels paper thin, transparent, emotions bleeding into the space between them. Lucas reaches across, tugs on his arm, and leads them, unsurprisingly, into the Woolf. And it’s okay that he’s bleeding, that this far deep the physics of the room demands honesty, because it’s Lucas, a fixed point in the universe, who, underneath the snark and pouting and dramatics, has always ever only gathered up all the kindness and joy and tenderness he could find in his hands and offered it to Eliott freely.

Lucas softly nudges Eliott towards a couch in the centre but doesn’t follow him down when Eliott sits, sinks, into the middle of it, wanders away to do whatever is required to start the movie. The lights dim, first, then the screen clicks to life with a kind thank you for choosing Lallemant Theatre for your movie going experience. The room is a universe unto itself, and the last traces of the day slide off of him, every bad thought getting lost in the dark.

Lucas, when he returns, drops down on Eliott’s side, close, confident, and reaches across his body for a handful of popcorn. Eliott had placed it beside him, next to the armrest, without thinking, but clearly it had been a great idea.

Lucas’ neck arches back when he relaxes, stares at the ceiling, chest moving slowly, deeply, his collarbone refracting light. It’s - Eliott shouldn’t stare like this, should try and tame his greedy eyes, because Lucas isn’t his to stare at so blatantly. Not really. Whatever nebulous, shifting, sometimes delicate thing they’ve morphed into over these months, there are some lines still intact, things left unsaid under a gossamer veil of… deniability, caution, something.

Like he’s been summoned by the current of Eliott’s thoughts, Lucas flops his neck, looks at him. “Can I take you up on your offer?”

“Of course,” Eliott answers automatically, without bothering to figure out exactly what he’s referring to. Yes, of course, literally whatever Lucas wants. His responding grin is visible even in the low light, and in the seconds Eliott takes to bask in and appreciate his smile, Lucas straightens up, whips out a small bottle of nail polish from somewhere, its lid silver and the polish colour unknown.

Right. Eliott has his doubts about how well this will go given the changing light levels, courtesy of the pre movie ads, and lack of a solid surface, but Lucas twists to sit sideways, takes Eliott’s hand and places it on one of his thighs, and, really, if Lucas has deemed this environment adequate, who is Eliott to tell him otherwise.

The denim of his jeans is warm, the muscle underneath firm, and Lucas pats his hand, just once, before opening the polish and securing the bottle in the crease of his other leg.

“What colour is it?”

“Dark orange, kinda.”

“I don’t know if it’ll go with my complexion. “

Lucas snorts. “You can take the hit.”

The first brush is on his thumb, and leaves a sizeable streak on the skin beside his nail. An edge of a smile is visible from Eliott’s eye line. The next nail goes about the same way, and Eliott makes the decision to study the room, the ads, the tumble of Lucas’ hair, rather than watch in real time as burnt orange varnish settles into the grooves of his skin.

By the time he finishes painting that hand, the movie has started, and Eliott really should pay attention, but his gaze is stuck. There are stars in Lucas’ eyes, his skin stained rose from light thrown from the screen, veins in his arms; Eliott vibrates with the need to touch, to feel, to trace the shape of his hands, his arms, the sweet curve of his neck.

His hand, the one on Lucas’ thigh, clasps, squeezes, subconsciously, and Lucas finally, finally, meets his gaze properly. His mouth feels sticky, stuffed with fairy floss, and he wants to apologise but the words won’t come out. There are stars in his eyes, an entire ocean, every sublime mystery the universe has to offer.

Characters are talking, their accents grating, and the light burns white.

Lucas’ hand finds his and squeezes.

“Can our next date be somewhere else?”

Eliott’s mind goes blank, tries to force the fairy floss away. “Our next date?”

“Or our first one, either way,” Lucas says, and his smile is cheeky, eyes teasing. Eliott takes a second to readjust to this new reality, this beautiful, divine reality, and lets himself smile too, gentle, and probably slightly awed.

“We’ve been doing this for how long, and this is how you officially ask me out?”

Lucas’ cheeks bunch with how big he’s smiling. “You had something better in mind, Romeo?”

“Maybe I did. Maybe I would’ve convinced your maman to play my favourite romance, and then recreated one of the scenes with you, which would make you swoon and win your heart.”

Lucas’ mouth gapes for a second, incredulous. “That sounded very well planned for something that I only just asked you.”

“That was one of my top five plans.”

“Five?”

“I’ll tell you about them later.” Lucas looks curious, like he wants to ask more, want to keep interrogating every romantic scenario Eliott has ever thought of, eyes flicking across Eliott’s features, and when he bites his lip Eliott’s gaze drops to them, plush, pink, begging to be captured. Normally Eliott would indulge him anything, but there are some better things they could do. “Can I please kiss you now?”

Lucas starts nodding before he’s finished speaking, smiles for a second, and he doesn’t have to lean far because Eliott has already moved forward, curled into his space.

“Please,” Lucas whispers, leans his neck up, and Eliott falls into his gravity. The first tentative brush of their lips feels like the first ever breath of air, vital, stabilising, impossible to live without. His hands go up to cup Lucas’ cheeks, keep him there, keep him close. His veins fizz and heart flutters, bounces, around his chest, but this, the sweet drag of Lucas’ lips, his soft sigh when Eliott tilts his head, kisses his deeper, slower, this is the most certain, the most right, he’s ever felt about anything. The universe was designed to place him here, with this boy, so close he’s almost in his lap. Placed him so he can hear the low noise Lucas makes, the vibrations travelling straight down to his core, when he breaks their kiss.

Lucas, dazed, confused, and smiling, looks back at him. “Why’d you stop?” his voice is a little gravelly.

Eliott strokes the cut of his cheekbones with his thumb. “I just - I’ve wanted to do that for a while,” he murmurs.

“Really?” Lucas asks, with a level of shock that shouldn’t be there, that Eliott will have to rectify every day they’re together. For now, though, he shrugs, raises his eyebrows teasingly.

Lucas makes a dramatic sound, some kind of sigh/groan hybrid, and looks heavenward. “I wasn’t sure if you were like that with everyone, or just me.”

When he looks back down Eliott guides their foreheads together, shakes his head gently so they don’t get displaced. “Only you. Ever since I saw you, it’s only been you.”

What Will You Do When Everyone Knows? Chapter 4

Ladybug and Cat Noir are having trouble with the newest akuma.  She’s dressed all in black, hardly speaks, and keeps slipping through their fingers.  To make things worse, she exposes Ladybug’s identity to the world.  Which should Marinette be more concerned about?  The world’s reaction, or her partner’s?  

Rated PG for action.  Chapter word count: 1,150.

    Cat Noir's eyes flitted around her room, taking in every single picture of Adrien. She had wondered if he was really serious about liking her. Well, she was about to find out, and she wasn't sure she was going to like the answer. Plus, this was not the time to be upsetting him. Hawk Moth didn't need both of them to be easy targets.

    "Listen," she said, trying to think of something to soften the blow. Was there some sort of cover story she could pull together? She didn't want to lie to him, but she didn't want to see him hurt either. "About the pictures..." Her mind went blank.

    "Well," he finally said. He glanced at her out of the corner of his eye, and then he smirked. "Looks like somebody's got a huge crush on Adrien Agreste."

    Marinette spluttered. "W-what?! No, I d-don't!"

    "Oh, yes, you do. You're even blushing."

    Marinette covered her cheeks with Tikki's cookies to try to hide the worst of it, but the look on Cat Noir's face said it was no use. She hadn't been expecting to be teased about this. She hadn't been expecting a smile, the brightest and most beautiful she'd ever seen him wear.

    "I design stuff. Those are there for inspiration."

    "Oh, so Adrien is inspiring? Good to know."

    How was his smiling getting bigger?

    "Clothes- design- inspire. Ugh, stop laughing!" She shoved him, but it didn't dampen his mood. Though this was completely mortifying, she was actually relieved. At least one of them was having a good time. And it seriously uncomplicated their partnership if they were both happy being only friends. This was good. So where was that twinge of disappointment coming from?

    "Hey, Princess, I actually know this guy in real life." He leaned toward her, like he wanted to tell her a secret. "Want me to talk to him for you?"

    "Would you? I mean, no! I want to talk to him!" She waved her arms at him, not sure what point she was trying to emphasize. "I-I mean, I don't have a crush on him. I don't know what talking you- I mean, what you're talking about. No crush. You can ask anyone."

    He looked away, back at the framed picture on her desk. "I'm going to ask all these Adriens."

    She took the opportunity to glance at the computer screen. Had she turned it off that morning, or was it just sleeping? She did not want him to see her collage background. Or the schedule. She would never hear the end of it.

    When her eyes found Cat Noir's, he was still smiling, but he seemed suddenly hesitant. "Can I... tell you who I am?"

    "What?" Where had that come from? "No."

    His smile and the tips of his cat ears drooped very slightly. "Please, I want you to know."

    She waved off his response, shaking her head. "It's too dangerous. Wait. Is this what you wanted to talk to me about?"

    "Ah." He took a step back and shook his head, obviously trying to refocus. "I actually wanted to see if I could meet your kwami, see if he or she's got any ideas about what we should do."

    "She, actually." Marinette put a hand to the mouth of her bag and faltered. Everything suddenly felt more real. Her partner was going to meet her kwami. She was Ladybug unmasked, and all three of them knew it. She steeled herself, then opened the purse.

    "HI!" Tikki came streaking out, straight toward Cat Noir's face. He jumped back in surprise. "I'm Tikki! Plagg probably never tells you this, so I'm going to. I think you're doing a great job! It's nice to finally meet you in person."

    Cat Noir looked stunned for the second time in five minutes. "You're officially my favorite kwami."

    Tikki giggled. "Plagg takes some getting used to. He means well, though."

    Marinette held up a cookie, which Tikki happily started eating in her open palm. "Plagg? He's not that bad is he?"

    "Ehh," Cat Noir said. "He's... Plagg. And kind of annoying."

    They both watched Tikki munch contentedly for a few seconds. This isn't as weird as I thought it would be.

    "I agree with your father," Tikki said as she finished her first cookie and grabbed the next one. "We can get through this together."

    "Has anything like this happened before?" Cat Noir asked her. His eyes kept flicking toward the pictures scattered around the room, and Marinette was having a hard time keeping her face blank.

    "Of course!"

    "Really?" Cat Noir sounded hopeful. "How'd it turn out?"

    "Easier to control than this," Marinette said. "Last time, people continents away weren't hearing about it within minutes. Right?"

    "This is the first time since the internet that it's happened, but I don't think that matters much."

    "What?!" Marinette almost shrieked. "What?! You were the one who said I couldn't tell anyone! How are you being so calm about this?"

    Tikki put her cookie down, floated to Marinette's nose, and gave it a tiny, tiny hug. It tickled. "There's still an akuma loose. You two should be focusing on that. There's no sense worrying about something you don't have control over."

    "The victim needs our help, too," Cat Noir said.

    Marinette sighed. Chantal was really the last person she wanted to help right now, but they were both right. It wasn't the akuma victim's fault, and they had a job to do. "We still don't have a plan on how to catch her."

    "I was thinking about that," Cat Noir said. "She got your identity when she touched you, right?"

    Marinette nodded, the memory turning her insides to ice. "We still don't know what she wants, though." Or where she is. She looked out the window. Rivulets of water distorted the view of the neighboring buildings, but no akuma stared back at her.

    "We have one thing she wants." He put a hand on his chest.

    "Absolutely not."

    "We have to stop her."

    "We are not using you or your identity as bait." Marinette scrutinized him through squinted eyes. True, she didn't have any better ideas, but she couldn't help but feel that part of his offering was based on the hope that he'd be revealed to her.

    Tikki bobbed between them, quietly crunching on her snack.

    "I'm open to other ideas," he said.

    Sabine's voice floated, muffled, up through the trapdoor. "Kids! Alya's here!"

    "I'll just hide out here," Tikki said, drifting up toward the bed. "We don't want to give away all your secrets."

    "We'll think of something," Marinette said to Cat Noir, reaching down to grab the trapdoor's handle. "This is awful, and I'm not letting it happen to you, but we probably shouldn't make Alya wait."

    "Girl! Get down here or I'm coming up there!"

    Cat Noir chuckled and helped lift the trapdoor, holding it open for her. "Ladies first," he said with a wink.

Field Trips And Slice Of Life

“Jessie, you’ve got to get up. You promised me that you would help me chaperone the field trip today.” Hugo insists.

You groan.

“Ughhhhhhhh. I don’t want to get uuuuuuup.” However, despite your protests, you eventually crawl out of bed and get dressed.

“Could you wake up Ernest?” Hugo asks. “I’m going to go get started on breakfast.”

“Of course, babe.” You rub the sleep out of your eyes and set to work waking up Ernest.

You start by knocking on the door. You hear groaning.

“I know you don’t want to get up. Believe me, I did not want to get my butt out of bed either, but school is important, and it will teach you skills that you need in the future.”

“No, it won’t!” Came the shout back.

“Yeah, well, you’re going on a field trip today, anyway, so you’ll learn things that are a little more useful than the things you learn in regular school. And, if not, at least you’ll probably have some fun!”

“No, I won’t! All they do at school field trips is give you a dumb packet to work on!”

“...Okay, so that may be the case, but that doesn’t negate the fact that you have to get up. Besides, if you get up, you get bacon. Bacon is delicious.”

“Are you really using bacon as a way to get me out of my room?” Ernest says, but he opens his door to glare at you.

“It worked, didn’t it?”

Ernest says nothing, but he does grumble as he walks past you. Your mission here is accomplished. It’s food time.

Food is enjoyed by everyone in relative silence, with the only talking being Hugo asking if Ernest remembered everything that he needed to bring.

As soon as that was settled with an of course along with a groan from Ernest, we were out the door and at the school.

Oh boy. Middle schoolers. Gotta love them. You hope that no one will steal, like, an artifact or something.

“I hope no one tries to steal a penguin this time.” You say to Hugo, who laughs.

“I don’t think there are any penguins at the museum we’re going to.”

“I hope no one tries to steal a bone.” You rephrase.

“I never know with this group of kids. I’m pretty sure they have a secret bar that none of the teachers know how to go to, and their preferred currency is the little rubber bands shaped like animals.”

“What if the currency is those little stickers that teachers hand out to kids who’ve been good. Do teachers still do that? I’m actually not sure.”

“Teachers still do that, but only for younger kids. Some of the teachers do something similar for the older kids though.”

You and Hugo eventually managed to get the kids inside the museum and give them each a packet to work on. And, if you happened to have some extra pencils on you to give to students that forgot their pencil, no one could prove anything. Especially not Hugo.

“I’m worried you’ve been spending too much time with Robert.” Hugo said as he noticed you sneaking a pencil to a kid who didn’t have one. Hugo, obviously, refused to give any pencils to those that needed them, but you think that was just a teacher trying to make his students more responsible and carry a pencil or two at all times.

“What makes you say that?” You ask in the most innocent tone you can muster, which was most definitely riddled with mischief because you couldn’t lie to save your life.

“...You came up with an elaborate story about how we were attacked by the Elephant Spectral at three am on a Wednesday to explain to Ernest why I had hickeys.” Hugo deadpanned. “He didn’t even ask why I had hickeys in the first place.”

“...Point taken. But, to be fair, I’ve also been hanging out with Mary a lot too.”

“Mary and Robert are friends, Jessie.”

“Okay, so I’ve been hanging out with two people who spin wild stories in order to scare people, and I happen to have picked up the skill. At least I don’t have trouble admitting that my stories are fake. I can only tell which stories of Robert’s are fake because of how much time I’ve spent with him.”

“The fact that- wait, hold on a moment. Elizabeth! You’re not allowed to touch that!” Hugo went back to you after he quickly dealt with Elizabeth trying to touch everything. He sighed. “It’s not like there aren’t signs that say you can’t touch this everywhere.”

“Could you tell me about some of the things in here?”

Hugo grinned and pointed to one of the dinosaur skeletons.

“That one belongs to a dinosaur called the Megalosaurus. It lived during the Jurassic Period and was one of the first dinosaurs ever discovered. And, over here is the Troodon, who has the largest brain to body ratio of any dinosaur.”

Hugo continued rambling on about dinosaurs and fossils. It always amazed you how much Hugo loved to learn and how much he loved to teach, regardless of how much he claimed that the students he taught were obnoxious. He was always that little bit more in a good mood when he successfully helped a student or a student ends up loving a book they read in class.

As much as he tells you about how annoying his students are, he also talks about how amazing his students are. How Damarious has actually been doing better in class since he’s joined the robotics club. How Catherine was excited to show Hugo the solution to a puzzle that she spent a long time trying to solve. How Sal was typically quiet but was the loudest one in group discussions.

It was all extremely sweet. He’s so proud of all his students. Even the ones who start gambling rings. Come on. You have to be a least a little bit impressed that a kid managed to set up a gambling ring that was kept a secret from the teachers for a good bit of time.

And now you’re trying to convince Lucas to not steal a fossil that was in an open area.

“Look, I get it. Those fossils are super cool, but these fossils are just for looking at, and you’re not allowed to take them. But, if you really want to own a fossil of your own, they sell them in the gift shop. So, if you could please put that particular fossil back where you found it, I can show you to the gift shop so that you can get a fossil of your very own.”

You were so very thankful that Lucas opted to put the fossil back and go to the gift shop, and you also glad that you didn’t need to bribe a child again. You weren’t proud of that moment in your life.

You helped Lucas find a fossil that he would like, and, after he paid for it, you guided him back to the group. Hugo caught sight of you bringing Lucas back to the group.

“Did you bribe a child again?” He asked, which, to be fair, was a perfectly reasonable question to ask based on the situations that the two have you have been through together.

“I didn’t actually have to bribe a child again. I am very thankful for that. I trust that you haven’t had a repeat of your Penguin Facts™ Lecture.”

“Goodness, no. That was awful, and I have no idea how I successfully created a distraction with that. I realized I knew almost nothing about penguins.”

“It’s a good thing the school didn’t get banned from the aquarium.”

“Thank god we can still have a field trip accompanying the learning of The Old Man and the Sea.”

“Speaking of literature you teach the kids, has anyone tried to Cask of Amontillado anyone again?”

“That was a one-time occurrence, and I hope every day that it doesn’t happen again. I also hope every day that Ernest actually reads the stories his teachers assign him so that something like that doesn’t happen again.”

“Robert thinks that Ernest has horrible taste in movies.” You say without thinking. Oh god, you know Hugo is going to ask about that. You can’t lie at all. You just have to rephrase it so the entire truth isn’t revealed because you refuse to admit that you snuck into a movie theater with Robert to watch a bad movie.

“What makes him say that?” Hugo asked, and you knew he was going to ask that. Okay. This is fine. All you have to do is omit certain things.

“Once we went to see a movie, and it was a pretty bad love story, so Robert yelled that love is dead at the end of it, and Ernest happened to be watching the movie, so he yelled back that the love in the movie was beautiful. They proceeded to have an argument about good cinema.” Nailed it.

“I wasn’t aware that Robert enjoyed movies.”

“He made me stay for the credits, and he individually thanked every single person who appeared in the credits for working hard to make the movie.”

“...Wow.”

“Yeah.”

The field trip was over soon, and you were glad to be back home. You plopped down on the couch as soon as you arrived.

“This is where I live now.” You declare.

“I don’t think that would be very good for your back.”

“Let the man sleep.” Ernest says, surprising you. “It’s not like his back can get any worse.”

“Wow, rude. I’ll have you know that my back is in tip top shape, and I could probably run a marathon with this back of mine.”

“Uh huh. That’s why you keep complaining about how much your back hurts all the time.”

“I’m old. I have a right to complain.”

“You can’t just say you have a right to complain when your back is clearly in ‘tip top’ shape. You’re contradicting yourself, you dope. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to listen to music in my room. Don’t bother me.” Ernest then proceeded to go to his bedroom.

“I’m so proud.” Hugo suddenly said. “He pointed out a contradiction.”

“He’s come a long way from staying still for twenty minutes while Lucien built a brick wall around him.”

“Ah, yes. That. Well, I have packets to grade. Love you.”

“Love you, too, babe.”

Hugo went off to grade the packets, and you decided to contact Amanda to see how things were doing at college.

“Hey, Amanda!” You greet. “How have you been doing? How's college treating you?”

“Hey, Dad.” Amanda responds, and you feel so happy to hear from her again, even if the last time you talked to her was literally yesterday. “I’ve been doing great, and college has been treating me with as much mercy as you would expect.”

“How much progress have you made on that collage you have to do?”

“I have about half of it done.” Amanda holds up a collage covered in various fashion accessories and clothing.

“I can’t wait to see it when it’s done! It’s progressing really nice so far!”

“Thanks. Of course, I also have to write a really long report about it, which is, to say the least, ughhhhhhh.” Amanda groans before changing the subject. “Anyway, we always talk about me during our chats, but have you been doing anything other than staying at home and watching tv, Dad?”

“Actually, I have. I chaperoned a field trip today.”

“Did someone try to steal a penguin again?”

“No, but someone did try to steal a fossil. Nothing living was stolen. At least none that I was aware of.”

“How big was the fossil? Did someone try to steal an entire dinosaur skeleton? That would be kick ass.”

“No, it was just a small shell fossil. I was able to convince them to put it back where they found it though.” You puff up with pride. You were very proud of yourself for that.

“Good job.” Amanda says, and then you hear someone calling Amanda in the background. “Sorry, Dad. Got to go. Some fun activity is calling my name.”

“Alright.” You were pretty disappointed that your conversation was cut short, but you can recognize that Amanda has a life, and she deserves to live that life. “Love you, Manda Panda.”

“Love you, too, Dad.”

After that conversation, you worked on your writing for a little while before checking on Hugo.

You hug him from behind and rest your chin on his shoulder.

“How’s your work going, babe?” You ask.

“I think Rebecca tried her best to get everything wrong. She might be trying to make a point about how grades don’t matter in the long run.”

“Why do you think that?”

“Because she’s an extremely smart kid, and she definitely has the capability to have fantastic grades, but she doesn’t because she feels like she has something to prove.”

“Maybe you could convince her to join the politics club or something. It might be a good way to put that kind of drive into use.”

“I don’t know if our school has a politics club.” Hugo admits. “But, to be fair, I’m not often aware of the clubs in the schools unless the students talk about it or I’m involved in it.”

“Yeah? Well, how’s the wrestling club going?”

“It’s going great! More people are in the wrestling club than ever! Which, of course, means more students to deal with, but it also means that it’s becoming more popular.”

“That’s fantastic!” You say.

“How was your chat with Amanda?” Hugo asks.

“It was good, but it was kind of cut short. She has finished half of one of her projects. I’m so proud of her.”

“That’s good. Maybe she’s actually turning in her work.”

“I hope she is.” You say, and then you realize that you are getting hungry. “I’m going to make dinner because food is an important part of everyday life.”

“Do you need any help?”

“Maybe a little.”

You and Hugo go to the kitchen and end up making mac and cheese. Always a good fallback when you have absolutely no idea what to make.

Eventually, the two of you manage to make something without burning the house down. That was likely due to Hugo’s influence.

“Ernest! Dinner’s ready!” Hugo shouts, and Ernest soon exits from his room.

The three of you enjoy a very nice meal with Hugo both talking about the wrestling club and asking how Ernest’s day at school was. Ernest was as grumpy as ever, but at least he was a little bit more responsive to questions. You have a feeling that he’s going to put a cherry bomb in someone’s trash can to make up for it.

You find out that Ernest liked the T. Rex exhibit in the museum. You aren’t surprised that he liked it, but you are surprised that he willingly offered the information. He typically just avoids giving any specific details about his life and is usually kind of hostile. You and Hugo still love him though.

“I’m going out.” Ernest says right after he finishes his dinner.

“You’ve finished all your homework, right?” Hugo questions.

“Yes. Bye, I’m leaving now.” Ernest leaves, and Hugo yells after him.

“Make sure to call me if something happens!”

Ernest waves him off. Hugo closes the door and sighs.

“He seems to be going out a lot more recently.” Hugo admits. “But he’s also been acting better, and no one has informed me of Ernest acting up recently, so I feel like those things are connected.”

“If he’s been acting better because of it, I wouldn’t worry about it too much.” You say. “Although it would be nice to know where he’s going in case something happens.”

“You’re right. I hope he does message me if something goes wrong though.”

“I’m sure he will.”

The two of you just kind of sit in silence for a bit.

“You know Ernest loves you, right?” You break the silence.

“I love him, too.”

“You should tell him that more often.” You suggest.

“You think so?”

“Definitely.”

Ernest eventually comes home to you and Hugo cuddling on the couch and watching tv.

“Hey, Ernest!” You greet. “How was your outing?”

“It was fine.” Ernest says, and he makes his way to his room.

“Hold on a minute, Ernest.” Hugo says.

“What?”

“I just…” Hugo pats Ernest on the shoulder. “I wanted to let you know that I love you.”

Ernest stays silent for a few moments before speaking in a whisper.

“Love you, too, Dad”

Ernest then immediately escaped to his room.

You approach Hugo, who is positively glowing. He looks even more excited than he does when he’s talking about wrestling, which truly is saying something.

“Babe?”

Hugo lifts you up in a bear hug and spins you around, grinning widely.

When he puts you down, he’s still shining like a million suns.

You kiss him, and he kisses you back with a large amount of passion and enthusiasm. You pull away.

“What did Ernest say to make you this happy?” You ask. After all, you didn’t exactly hear what Ernest said back to Hugo.

“He said that he loved me, Jessie.” Hugo exclaimed. “And he called me Dad!”

“That’s amazing!” You grin.

Hugo is practically vibrating with excitement. It reminds you of the time when you took him to the Power Slam.

God, you love this man.

“I love you.” You say, voicing exactly what you were thinking.

“I love you, too.” Hugo responds.

“You deserve all the love in the world, dear.” You say. “You take the time to learn about anything you can, and you’re so passionate in everything you do. From being a parent to teaching to wrestling, with everything you do, your passion shines through, and it’s so beautiful. You’re just really amazing, and I really love you, my cheddar cheese.”

Hugo laughs.

“You’re really going to use that pet name after all that?” Hugo says, but he’s smiling.

“Yes. Not all pet names are dear and babe, buttercup.”

“Those are the ones you appear to use the most often though.”

“Guilty as charged.”

Hugo smiles fondly at you, and then he kisses you softly.

What else are you going to do but kiss back?

Can I ask for the reaction of Snape, if his S/o has their graduation and crying bitterly, because they don't want to leave their class and misses them at this moment more than ever. They said that their class is everything to them and hug everyone.

“You idiot, I told you not to get in Mulciber’s way,” Severus says, dropping his handkerchief in the lap of the sobbing second year Hufflepuff.

“I…I hadn’t meant to…I was talking to the painting of the green lady and-” she sniffles into the gray cloth. It used to be white, but it is old, like most of what Severus owns.

Severus looks at her for a long moment and then sighs deeply. “I know this is only your second year, but I’ve been here for four, and you need to know that it’s simply not safe for you to ignore your surroundings when you’re this close to the dungeons.”

“You…you’re different than the other Slytherins,” she replies, smiling through her tears. “You’re helpful and nice.”

Severus scoffs. “I’m just telling you this for your own good. It’s not like I’m trying to be friendly. I don’t even know your name.”

She holds out her hand and, when he stares at it dumbly, she grabs it and shakes it heartily. Her curls bounce around her hair like something out of a nursery rhyme about girls and tuffets eating curds and whey. “I’m Mary Longbottom. Frank’s my older brother.”

Severus shakes her hand reluctantly. “Severus Snape, Slytherin. Only child, thank Merlin.”

Mary laughs and it is a light, happy thing in her mouth.

“Pleased to meet you, Severus. I hope we can be friends.”

“You idiot!” Severus hisses, pulling Mary into an alcove, his chest heaving with exertion. “You nearly got yourself killed!”

“I did not!” Mary shouts back, her eyes flashing.  Severus looks worriedly behind them as the sound of cruel voices come closer, and then casts a wordless spell around them. When she opens her mouth again, he covers it with his cool, dry hand, and Mary is struck silent by the contact. His touch is firm but somehow gentle.

Severus bring his eyes level with hers, though he is still about a foot taller than she is.  He looms over her in his robes, covering her like a midnight bird of prey. She finds her cheeks filling with heat at this, her eyes meeting his and both of them realizing something has changed.

The voices fade out as their pursuers disappear around the corner.

“You’re my knight in shining armor, didn’t you know?” she says, before closing the distance between their lips. “I knew you’d come to save me.”

Their relationship is a secret to everyone but them. Severus loves a secret, and Mary loves keeping them for those who count on her to do so.  They steal moments in the kitchens or in late night rendezvouses in all of the best alcoves.  There are darkened rooms and empty classrooms, all with secret places to snog or simply be together without having any sneering glances leveled in their directions.

It’s not much, but for now, it’s enough.

“It’s not fair! Why do you have to graduate first?” Mary asks, kissing Severus breathless. “Promise me that you’ll visit during the summer?”

He smiles that wry, tight smile that’s been featuring on his face more often lately, and says nothing.

She doesn’t need him to tell her what will happen next.  He holds her tightly for a long moment and then disappears before the other graduating students can enter the tent.

His letters are few. 

Her letters are many. 

Soon, they return to her, and she fears the worst.

The war hits in full force and nothing is the same. Mary joins the Order because Frank is in the Order, and after the Death Eaters kill their parents, Frank is all that Mary has left.  She has to believe that good will triumph over evil. There is no other choice.

She’s never been much for fighting. Or Potions. Or Charms. Or Defense.  Mary’s strengths are in comforting others- in drawing out their secrets and their pain and helping ease their minds with a strategically placed hand on the knee or a kind word or two.  

Mary is seventeen the January of her sixth year, which is the only reason she survives the Death Eater attack at Frank and Alice’s wedding later that May.  Still, there is a moment that she thinks herself dead before strong arms grab her and pull her into a tent.  His mask is silver and grotesque, but his breath and his whispered warning (“You fool, you could have been killed!”) fill her with comfort and he allows her to pull his mask up enough to reveal his thin lips and kisses him even though her heart is hammering between terror and tears.

“Go,” he says, “be safe. Forget about me.”

Mary shakes her head as she Apparates away.

Mary throws herself into her studies. She makes it her mission to make friends with everyone at school. Even Filch has a grimy old smile for her and Mrs. Norris allows Mary to scratch her behind her ears.  Even Slytherin House is no match for her charm.  Mary has to believe that love is stronger than hate. Not only for those who she fights alongside, but those who she fights against. 

Mary doesn’t want to give up on anyone.  Possibly not even He-Who-Should-Not-Be-Named, though thinking his actions makes her feel ill.  Maybe it’s naive of her, but she feels like if she can get through to them, find a better way for everyone, the reign of terror will finally end.

It’s her graduation day and Mary is crying. She hates herself for it, but the tears stream down her face regardless. So many of her friends are going home to an uncertain future, and Frank has asked her to start training to duel so that she can battle in the Order once she’s graduated.  All of her friends are there- they make such a beautiful collage of red and green and blue and yellow.

Mary’s always known that Hufflepuffs are unafraid of toil, but she also knows that toil nearly always leads to a rewarding end.  The warm smiles on her friends’ faces makes her sob all the more as they wrap their arms around her and tell her how much they’ll miss her now that school is over.

A shadowy figure stands under a tree at the edge of the forest and Mary blinks her tears away just long enough to see his pale face framed by jet black hair and a voluminous black cloak that flickers like a living shadow in the wind.

He is looking at her, his black eyes filled with surprise, sadness, and…is that a hint of pride?

He stays away from the rest of the festivities, and no one else seems to see him, but Mary can, and when she steals away from the celebration, he envelops her with his dark robes, his mouth giving her his secret smile and his arms tightly wound around her.  She can feel the cursed mark slithering against his skin but she does not hate him as she tips his chin down to kiss her, fresh tears making her eyes sparkle like starlight.

He is, after all, her knight, no matter how tarnished his armor has become.

“Please can we just go through those first few scenes one more time?”

“You know your lines, Tracy. I think you know every single line in the whole play!”

“Please? I don’t want to mess it up, we have to be word perfect for rehearsals tomorrow.”

Katya sighed, flopping backwards on her bed so that her head dangled off its edge, legs propped straight up against the wall. She had the script for Trixie’s play hanging from one hand, pages half folded down where they’d gone through it so many times. “Can we watch Contact after?” she bargained, shooting Trixie an upside down grin. Trixie rolled her eyes, swinging her legs from her spot perched on Katya’s desk.

“You know Ginger will go crazy if she comes back and finds us watching it again,” she said.

“She’s with Kennedy and Jasmine, you know what they’re like once they start gossiping. Who knows when she’ll be back? One more time and then Contact?” Katya pressed, flipping back to the beginning of the script.

“Oh my god, fine. One day you’re going to get sick of that movie and I hope I’m there for the moment,” Trixie said. Katya gasped, looking scandalized.

“Take that back,” she said.

“No!” Trixie laughed when Katya pulled a face at her, hopping off the desk to go and sit beside her on the bed. Katya pulled her legs down, pushing herself up with her hands on the floor and rolling over to lay on her stomach, chin on her hands. Trixie lay back beside her, head propped up on Katya’s pillows.

Things had been easy since the day of Katya’s meltdown – well, maybe not easy, but certainly easier. Now that Trixie knew how Katya felt, how nervous she could get and how sometimes the constant anxiety that was eating away at her could get too much, she’d gotten a little better at picking up on the cues that told her Katya was struggling. She knew when Katya just needed quiet and when she needed to be distracted with jokes and laughter. On those days when Katya needed peaceful company from her, the two of them holed up in one of their rooms, Trixie wondered about telling her about her family. Most of the time she didn’t even want to think about it, but there were times when she found herself practically choking on the desire to spill her guts about it all, and there was no one other than Katya she would trust with it. But the moment was never right; she’d open her mouth and the words would die on her tongue. She wanted to open up to Katya, give up as much of her history as Katya had given her, but she didn’t know how.

“Trixie!” Katya tapped her thigh, looking at her expectantly. Trixie blinked at her, then gave her a bashful smile.

“I’m ready!” she said, giggling when Katya dramatically cleared her throat before she started to read out the first lines before Trixie’s. They’d gone over Trixie’s scenes dozens of times, to the point where Trixie wouldn’t have been surprised if Katya was as word perfect on them as she was. She might not have gotten the parts she’d had her heart set on, but she still had a good part – besides, it had been worth it to make sure that she was there for Katya.

“See! You know every single word, you have nothing to worry about,” Katya said when they reached the end, dropping Trixie’s script to the floor beside her bed and reaching for her laptop.

“And if I don’t, I think I can count on you to step in for me,” Trixie replied. Katya laughed, nudging Trixie over and laying pressed up against her side as she propped her laptop up on the edge of her bed.

“I’m not great at learning lines. I did a play here back when I first got here and they gave me this whole huge monologue at the beginning…I completely fucked it up! It was a mess,” she said, shaking her head.

“That was when you were young! I bet you know all of my lines as well as I do,” Trixie insisted. Katya cocked her head, considering.

“Well, I do have one monologue that I keep up my sleeve for these kinds of occasions,” she said, looking up at Trixie with wide eyes.

“What is it?” Trixie asked curiously, turning onto her side beside her. Katya cleared her throat again, then tossed her hair over her shoulder before fixing Trixie with a solemn expression, eyes wide and earnest.

“I had an experience. I can’t prove it. I can’t even explain it. But everything I know as a human being, everything I am…tells me it was real. I was given something wonderful, something that changed me forever. A vision of the universe that tells us undeniably how tiny and insignificant, and how rare and precious we all are. A vision that tells us that we belong to something, that is greater than ourselves, that none of us are alone. I wish I could share that. I wish that everyone, if even for one moment could feel that awe and humility and hope…” Katya kept her gaze fixed on Trixie as she spoke, and Trixie was so lost in looking into her eyes that she barely took in the words she was saying. It was only when Katya’s lips starting to quirk up into a smile that Trixie realized what was happening, and she let out a loud shriek of laughter and pulled the pillow from beneath Katya’s head, dropping it onto her.

“I can’t believe you know that whole fucking monologue!” she said indignantly, while Katya wriggled around beside her, limbs flailing as she wheezed with laughter, looking monumentally proud of herself.

“I can’t believe it took you that long to recognize it! You haven’t seen this movie enough,” she said, giving Trixie a bright grin. Trixie rolled her eyes, replacing the pillow beneath their heads. She carefully untucked the strands of Katya’s hair that got trapped underneath it before she lay down properly again, looking up at the ceiling as Katya let the movie start playing. Maybe Trixie hadn’t recognized what Katya had been saying immediately, but she definitely knew Contact too well by this point. She had no idea why Katya loved it so much, but Trixie didn’t mind putting up with it just to see the absolute joy it seemed to bring her.  

The movie started to play, but Katya looked over at Trixie. “What are you doing for the holidays, Tallulah?” she asked, reaching out to twist one of Trixie’s curls around her fingers. Trixie huffed but didn’t stop her, preoccupied by her question.

“I don’t know,” she said, admitting it to herself as well as Katya. She’d been so focused on the play coming up that she hadn’t let herself stop and consider what she’d do when she was supposed to go home for the holidays. It wasn’t that far away now, and she had no idea what would happen. Would they put her back in another group home? She couldn’t imagine anything more depressing that spending her Christmas break with a bunch of strangers.

“How about Thanksgiving? Are you normally at home or do you go see family?” Katya asked her.

“At home, normally,” Trixie said, chewing on her lip. It was the truth; normally it was a quiet day at home, just her immediate family. But this year Trixie wouldn’t be a part of that. Would it still be the same back home? Would anyone even mention her when they all sat down to dinner? She mentally shook herself, determined not to dwell. She managed to stop herself from thinking about it all too much most of the time; it felt far away now, long ago enough that she didn’t quite have to remember it was real. “What about you guys? Is Thankgiving even a thing in Russia?” she asked Katya, deflecting the topic away from herself. Katya laughed, fingertips brushing against Trixie’s collarbone as she braided her curls.

“It’s the all American holiday! I’ve gone to Florida with Ginger the last couple of years. It’s too far to go home just for Thanksgiving. What about Christmas, what do you guys do?” she asked. Trixie’s stomach knotted, she wished Katya wouldn’t ask so many questions. She didn’t want to keep anything from Katya, and part of her ached to open up and let out everything she’d been bottling up, but she was scared that if she started she wouldn’t stop.

“It’s not a big deal. Food, presents, family, everything you’d expect. I want to hear about Christmas in Russia! Is it different?” she pressed, plastering a smile on her face. For a moment Katya’s eyes were narrowed, but then she smiled back at her, vibrant and genuine.

“It is! But I haven’t been there for Christmas in years. My parents come here for Christmas,” she explained.

“How come? Don’t you want to go home?” Trixie asked. Katya shrugged.

“I’m with my family. It doesn’t matter where we are,” she said. She made it sound so simple, and it made Trixie’s throat tighten, unexpected tears stinging at the back of her eyes. She blinked desperately, tipping onto her back to mask the way her breathing hitched. Katya made it sound so straightforward, and maybe it was, for her. Her vision blurred a little and her eyelashes were wet, and she quickly reached up to dab at them with the side of her finger.

“Trix?”

“Hm?” Trixie swallowed hard and purposefully avoiding looking over at Katya where she’d propped herself up on an elbow to look at Trixie. Trixie looked over at the wall instead, the haphazard collage of Katya’s drawings and pictures and articles she’d saved.

“Trixie, is there something—”

“Hey! I didn’t know this was up here,” Trixie said, pointing up at a torn piece of paper stuck directly above Katya’s pillow. It was the silly doodle she’d drawn in Katya’s notes months ago in her attempts to cheer her up. Katya was still for a moment, and Trixie all but held her breath as she waited to see if Katya would let her change the subject.

“Of course it is!” Katya said eventually, leaning over Trixie to tap at the drawing, a wide, warm smile spreading across her face. Her body pressed against Trixie’s side, and kept her fingertips on the edge of the drawing. Her hair dangled over Trixie’s face and she could smell the last cigarette she’d had on her, her thigh bumping against Trixie’s.

“I didn’t even think you’d noticed it,” Trixie admitted, brushing Katya’s hair away where it was tickling her nose. Katya looked down at her in surprise, bracketing her arms either side of Trixie’s head as she hovered over her.

“Of course I did. I know I was a total bitch that day, but you…” Katya trailed off, looking back at the drawing. Trixie glanced over at it too, the torn edges of the page and the way they were a little crumpled, like someone had been toying with them. “I like it. I like us, having us up there. I like how you see me,” Katya said, her voice softer than Trixie was used to.

“It’s just a dumb cartoon. You’re the artist, not me,” Trixie said, cheeks warm at the sincerity in Katya’s words.

“It’s cute! You captured my wooden teeth perfectly,” Katya insisted, stretching her smile out into an exaggerated grin until Trixie had to laugh. Katya laughed too, and Trixie could feel it vibrating against her body.

“Do you ever feel like it’s weird?” Trixie asked. Katya cocked her head, quizzical expression on her face. “How quickly we made friends, when I got here? It was like you saw me that first evening and just…decided you were going to be my friend.” Katya considered her, blue eyes thoughtful, and Trixie bit her lip. Then she shrugged.

“You make sense to me,” Katya said simply, and Trixie swallowed hard when Katya’s thumb stroked lightly over her arm. The air around her felt thick, and she couldn’t tear her gaze away from Katya’s. She felt hyper aware of how close they were, skin tingling and stomach knotted as Katya shifted above her.

“You make sense to me, too,” she whispered, because she couldn’t say anything else. It was the truth – she’d never met anyone like Katya before, and she couldn’t imagine not having her in her life. Katya smiled wide, and it was all Trixie could do to return it.

“We fit, don’t we?” Katya said, thumb pressing lightly into Trixie’s skin. It felt like Trixie’s blood was running too close to the surface, throbbing under Katya’s touch as more of Katya’s body pressed into hers and making her skin feel like it had been set alight. A pointed knee settled between her own, brushing against the soft skin of Trixie’s inner thighs and Trixie choked back a gasp, chest tightening.

“Yeah,” she breathed. She squirmed a little at the intensity of the feeling building in the pit of her stomach, and Katya brushed her fingers through Trixie’s hair, delicately tucking her curls behind her ear.

“Trixie, I—”

Trixie cut Katya off before she could speak, giving into the indescribable urge to lean up and press her lips to Katya’s. Her lips were soft and warm and plump under her own and Katya sank into her immediately, closing the distance between them to press their bodies together. Her hand slid from Trixie’s hair to cup her cheek, the warm strength of her body settled against Trixie’s as Trixie drew her knees up, thighs slotted against Katya’s.

It felt right, the light touch of Katya’s fingertips as she tilted her head, carefully opening Trixie’s lips beneath her own and licking into her mouth. Trixie couldn’t help the quiet whimper that escaped her, fingers sinking into the back of Katya’s hair as her arm wound around her back, clinging to the thin material of her shirt. She could feel the heat of Katya’s skin through her shirt, not an inch of space between them as Katya kissed her deeply. It was all Trixie could do to return the kiss, Katya’s warm breath puffing against her upper lip from her nose and her hand sliding slowly down Trixie’s side, short nails scraping lightly. Trixie bit down on her lip at the way her whole body tingled at the touch. It felt like her skin was pulled too tight, buzzing at every sensation and ready to burst with the hot waves of new feelings Katya was drawing from her. She tried to pull her closer, fingers pressing against Katya’s scalp and her stomach tightening at the moan Katya let out against her lips. She crowded in closer to her, teeth grazing lightly over Trixie’s lower lip before she kissed her hungrily again. Trixie felt boneless, any tension in her body sprung tightly in her lower stomach as she clung to Katya for dear life.

Outside Katya’s room, a door slammed loudly. Trixie jumped in surprise, her whole body jerking and lips pulling away from Katya’s. She tried to catch her breath, breathing heavily as Katya panted against her cheek. Trixie felt stunned, suddenly on high alert as her mind raced.

What had just happened? This was her best friend and her best friend was a girl and Trixie had kissed her and what was she doing?

Katya’s hand squeezed her side lightly and Trixie opened her eyes to find Katya looking at her with a soft, almost dopey smile on her face. “Trixie,” she said, voice quiet as she leaned in again to press their lips together.

“Stop!” Trixie gasped, heart racing as she jolted upwards, scrabbling to get out from underneath Katya. Katya was still for a moment, but then she kneeled up, letting Trixie roll off the bed until she was standing in front of it. “I can’t,” she said, stepping backwards and trying to block out the way Katya was looking at her, surprise and then hurt crossing her face. Trixie’s heart was beating fast and there was a hot lump in her throat as she reached the door, grabbing the handle with a shaking hand. What had she been thinking? Ginger could have come back or any of the girls could have walked in, and what would they have found? How could she have been so stupid? She’d let some crazy moment of madness take over.

“Trixie, wait—”

Not daring to look back over her shoulder, Trixie opened the door, letting it shut behind her with a bang as she fled.

Robron self-care

[Or, Lizzie goes on a positivity rampage...]

Good morning fandom! How are we doing? I have a suspicion that we’re all feeling a bit fragile this morning. I know I am; despite my attempt to stay positive I was still only able to get about 4 hours sleep. So, I have made a list of fun robron and non-robron things we can do today and over the weekend to try and ease the knots in our stomachs and the tension in our backs.

I’m a fic writer and so lots of these are writing and reading related. Also, I feel good when I comment on things or talk to people but I know that for some this is something that causes anxiety, rather than helps it. That’s cool- do as many or as few of these things as you like! Also, making this list was actually a really nice way of feeling calm and distracted, so if anyone wants to make a list of their own I would so love to see it!

You can still get a free trial with Audible so you can try a book- but my favourite thing on there are The Great Course lectures which are uni level lectures for a whole range of topics. The one on Ancient Egypt is my favourite so far.  

Take the most insane buzzfeed quiz you can find- because who else can give you life advice that matches your perfect roast dinner? Who doesn’t want to know which 90’s indie band they are? How can you go through life without knowing which dried fruit matches your zodiac sign?

Get a book out of a library; even if you do not get the time or inclination to read it- the act of going out and exploring the bookshelves can still be fun

If you’re like me and find cleaning soothing declutter the files on your laptop; studies have shown that this is the easiest way to procrastinate whilst looking like you’re actually being really productive and lbr the sight of beautifully organised files is a thing of beauty

Indulge in a beauty routine that you sometimes forget to do- paint your nails, give yourself a hair or face mask, use a pore strip or just take a hot shower :)

Stay hydrated! Don’t like water? Try a fancy new tea or coffee! Not a hot beverage fan? Try a favourite childhood drink (I recently bought a bottle of Robinsons squash after about 10 years and I don’t even know why I’ve never bought it for myself before…)

Glitter and Stars

I don’t remember where I first saw this prompt, but I saved it with the hopes of one day getting around to writing something for it.

The prompt was something like: “John and Sherlock sitting in the living room doing crafts, with soft little murmurs of ‘oh I quite like that.’”

Does anyone remember who it was, so I can tag them?

Edit: Found them! Okay, so it wasn’t exactly a prompt, but I took the challenge anyway. ;P

It was a lazy Sunday morning like any other when John plodded down the stairs in his soft cotton trousers and thin vest. Still bleary-eyed from sleep, he headed straight into the kitchen for his morning cup of tea. But before he could do more than set out his mug and fill the kettle, his ears picked up a quiet susurrus coming from the living room.

Curious, he poked his head around the door. “Morning. What you up to, then?”

Sherlock glanced up from where he was sat cross-legged by the coffee table, wrapped in his navy blue dressing gown and surrounded by a scattering of junkmail booklets and magazines. A pair of scissors stilled in his hand, threaded halfway through a glossy page with a printed headline that read, if John squinted hard enough, ‘This Year’s Biggest Blockbusters!’ in fat, red letters.

“It’s Mrs Hudson’s birthday tomorrow,” Sherlock mumbled, focus dropping back to his enigmatic task. He carefully adjusted his grip on the page and closed the scissor blades with a gentle, pleasing snick. As he rotated the paper, he seemed to be cutting a circle around one of the letters. After a full rotation, the cut piece fluttered to the carpet by his toes, and he set the ruined page down beside him.

John scratched a finger through his eyebrow. “Um... Okay. That didn’t really answer the question, though.” He plodded over to the coffee table for a better look at what his mad friend was up to.

Close-up, he could see that Sherlock had already cut several letters out of various magazines, and had arranged them in rows by his feet. There were a multitude of colours and typefaces; some bold, some elaborately curly, some with drop-shadows. It took John a moment to realise that he’d spelt out most of the phrase ‘Happy Birthday’ and had the beginnings of what would probably end up being ‘Mrs Hudson’.

It raised more questions than it answered. “What on earth are you doing?”

Sherlock let out a deep sigh. “Isn’t it obvious? I’m making a card.”

“A card?” John narrowed his eyes in puzzlement. “You’re actually... making a birthday card. From scratch.”

“Yes.”

“You do realise they sell those.”

“I’m well aware.”

“Right. Just... It would be a lot easier than”—his hand fluttered at the mess surrounding them—“all this.”

Sherlock stopped fiddling with the placement of his newest acquisition (the final ‘Y’ he needed to complete the word ‘Birthday’) and glared up at him. “John, I am not going to spend two or three quid on a mass-produced piece of cardboard printed with some obnoxiously fluffy sentiment and designed by a total stranger.”

His long finger jabbed accusingly over at the table by John’s chair, where his own card — a fairly standard Hallmark offering, with a teddybear or a kitten or something on the front (God, he couldn’t even remember) — was already sealed in its envelope and awaiting delivery. “How many cards do you buy a year, on average, and write the same banal message inside each one: ‘To blah, from John’? You don’t even get to write the ‘Happy Birthday’ bit yourself because it’s already written inside.”

“Well actually, I usually try to think of something more—”

“And once received, it is glanced at for approximately five seconds in total, before being forgotten on a mantlepiece for a day or two and then ending up in the rubbish bin.” He scowls, deepening the crinkle across the bridge of his nose. “Does that strike you as money well spent?”

“Well not when you put it like that,” John replied, “but it’s the thought that counts, isn’t it? People like getting cards.”

“Exactly! Which is why I’ve decided to make my own from now on. It has the dual benefit of being cheaper and more personal. I can guarantee you Mrs Hudson will appreciate it far more than whatever you plucked off a shelf in passing at Tescos.”

John sat himself on the sofa, faintly stunned. He couldn’t fault the logic. However, Sherlock’s technique left something to be desired. Perhaps it was a side-effect of a life spent investigating crimes, but the arrangement of mis-matched letters on the floor was looking more to him like a grisly ransom note than a cheery greeting.

Sherlock seemed oblivious to it. In fact, he seemed to be quite enjoying himself. “I may do one for Graham next.”

“Uh, before you get too carried away,” John hedged, “maybe you should try a different approach to this. Something that will end up looking a bit less like a threatening note from a kidnapper.”

Sherlock pinned him with a mildly pained look. “What do you mean?”

“I mean this, the whole letters... thing.”

“It’s called a collage, John.”

“It’s called, ‘Send something like this to Greg, and you’ll get yourself called in for questioning.’ Not to mention probably giving Mrs H a heart attack. Look,” he lifted a finger before Sherlock could protest, “I’ll pop down the shops in a bit and pick up some supplies. Then we can both sit down and make a proper card, with— I don’t know, glitter or something. Alright?”

Sherlock studied him for a few seconds, his eyes flitting back and forth in indecision. Then, his shoulders relaxed on a defeated sigh. “Fine. If you think that would be better.”

That afternoon, they sat down together on the sofa, a variety of craft materials spread out across the coffee table. John felt like a schoolkid again, but his embarassment quickly melted underneath Sherlock’s genuine enthusiasm for the activity. Soon enough, they were both well into it.

“Pass me those sequins.”

“Where are you putting them?”

“I thought they could be like little stars or something.”

“Stars?” Sherlock scoffed, his breath accidentally blowing a scrap of coloured tissue paper off the table. “I thought this was a day scene. You can’t have a big yellow sun and stars.”

“Says who?” John dabbed dots of glue in random spots across the top of the card. “It doesn’t have to make sense, as long as it looks pretty.”

“Careful. Don’t smudge—“

“I’m not going to bloody smudge it,” he mumbled. His tongue poked between his lips in concentration. After a few stars, he could feel Sherlock’s eyes burning at him. “What? I’m being careful.”

“Nothing.”

Before they knew it, they’d spent two whole hours bent over the coffee table, cutting shapes and gluing things and arguing lightheartedly over tiny details. By the end of it, their fingers were sticky and covered in sparkles. A silver foil star had somehow found its way onto Sherlock’s forehead, and John burst into giggles when he spotted it.

“God, we’ve made a mess,” he said, grinning as he stepped closer to pluck the star from Sherlock’s brow. It was the faintest of touches, but Sherlock’s breath hitched, a small noise that sent an unexpected shiver down his spine. Their eyes locked for a moment, and it almost seemed as though they were both waiting for the other to make some move. To pull back, or perhaps lean in...

A passing car honked its horn in the street outside, startling them both. Blinking and clearing his throat, John stepped away. “We should, um. We’ll sign it once it’s dry.” He absently wiped the back of his hand across his nose and stared at their card, at the floor. Anything except those piercing silver eyes.

“John.” Sherlock’s voice captured his attention like a magnet, impossible to resist. They gazed at each other, and as Sherlock stepped closer, invading his personal space, John felt his pulse kick up several notches in his throat.

“What?” he croaked. His mouth was watering more than usual. His fingers twitched at his sides, barely resisting a mad urge to reach out and curl around Sherlock’s broad shoulders. Sherlock leaned closer, and for one giddy moment, John thought he was about to kiss him.

Instead, Sherlock’s mouth quirked into a lopsided grin. “You just smeared glitter all over your own face.”

The next day, their homemade card took pride of place on Mrs Hudson’s mantlepiece. She cooed over it for the better part of an hour, John and Sherlock keeping her company until it was time to see her off for a visit to her sister’s.

Afterwards, they were still finding sequins and stars in odd places around the flat for weeks. One night, John noticed Sherlock was staring at him unusually intently— even for him. John lowered his newspaper. “Something on my face?”

Sherlock rose slowly from his seat and approached him. Then, leaning down, he spoke in a tone several shades lower than John had ever heard. “Yes, actually.” John daren’t move an inch as Sherlock’s slender fingers came up and found his lip, pressing it gently.

Before he could prevent it, John’s tongue automatically darted out to wet his lips, and they both gasped as he ended up accidentally tasting the tip of Sherlock’s finger. There was a soft pinch, and Sherlock slowly withdrew his hand, presenting a tiny gold fleck.

John huffed a laugh, his cheeks burning with embarrassment. “Blimey. Your eyesight’s better than mine if you saw that all the way over there.”

“Actually, I lied.” Caging him in between his slender, powerful arms, Sherlock drew close enough that his breath ghosted across his mouth. Their noses touched, and John’s heart hammered in his chest. His eyes fluttered closed.

Glitter and stars, he thought giddily, before his mind went comfortably blank.

Last week I used autotrader to search for numerous quotes and found one for around 1450. Today I passed my driving test, and went back to the quote but it had to be renewed since last week which is fair enough. The lowest value today was 1576 which I am alright with. I refreshed the page a while later to find that quote had disappeared and the cheapest was 1620, with the company for that quote (elephant) at the bottom with an unable to find a quote detail. Happy Valentine’s Day Aaron (Shalaska) - Rosie

Justin’s thumb flicks the smooth glass screen rhythmically, repetitively stopping and starting as his bleary morning eyes browse over his feed. It’s the usual; food snaps and gig announcements and selfies from everyone he follows - except for one thing.  

Today is Valentine’s Day.

He skims over the flood of roses, chocolates, pictures with “bae” and so on. It’s all generic, and Justin’s quite proud that he’s doing okay this Valentine’s Day. Sure, he’s only been conscious of the holiday for a few minutes now, but he’s doing okay. His heart doesn’t hurt like it has in past years when he’s woken up on the 14th of the second month, alone in a cold bed, with an empty inbox, a weight in his chest and a lump in his throat.

He keeps flicking the screen, double tapping a few favourites before he scrolls past it, but long enough to see it. Even through his sleepy, tired eyes and rapid scrolling, he still sees it. His thumb holts and stays on the screen, pausing for a moment. There’s a second where Justin considers to not scroll up, to not look at it, to just move on. Why make himself feel bad?

Even in his quick scrolling he knows exactly who posted it. After stalking following their profile for so long, Justin had memorised the shape of his username, the colours of his profile photo.  

He scrolls back up.

He doesn’t realise he’s been holding his breath until he lets it out, his eyes taking in the photo. Or should he say, photos.

It’s from Aaron. It’s a collage of loved up photos of him with his boyfrien-, partner-, fucking, fiancé. Justin corrects himself mentally. He has to correct himself every time because every time he sees them together he forgets there was a proposal and now a ring and a title and all these things Aaron always said he was never into but was suddenly very into as soon as they ended and he moved on.

Justin closed his eyes.

He was better than this.  

He had learnt to not let flimsy things like this make him spiral. Through heartbreak, he had accepted this long ago.

The collage has time, effort, thought and love put into it. There’s at least a silver lining that Needles is blessing someone with those things. It’d be a crime for that to go to waste. Aaron has so much love to give, and Justin has so much room in his heart for it.

Aaron had woken up first, a rare occasion. Whether it was nerves or excitement at the fact that Aaron had never actually spent a Valentine’s Day with a partner, he couldn’t sleep in that morning. He crawled over a sleeping Justin, his leisurely movements slowly waking up the younger boy.

“Happy Valentine’s Day baby,” he spoke softly, his cheek brushing against Justin’s, his shaggy blonde hair tickling his skin, his crotch grinding down on the man beneath him.

Justin smiled and breathed in deeply as he woke up, inhaling Aaron’s scent. He smelt faintly of smoke and coffee. He smelt warm, like home.

Justin wrapped his arms around his neck and his legs around his waist to pull him closer. Their lips met and Justin moaned into him, deepening the kiss as his hips instinctively brushed up against Aaron’s, craving his touch.

Neither were properly awake, the two of them a collection of heavy limbs, soft skin and breathy moans.

Aaron pulled away from their kiss before planting a trail of lazy, deep kisses down Justin’s neck, who arched into the soft bedding beneath him, grinding his body against Aaron’s.
