hello, i hope ur alright. i was wondering what u think Ls relationship to watari is, like how does he view him/how does he feel about him? thank u
I’m alive so that’s a plus.
Sometimes colleges do this thing where they pay kids to take drugs for money or sit in rooms to do social experiments for money. Sometimes those go on overnight, and they’ll be provided a place to sleep and some food so that the scientists running the experiment can see how the subject reacts to different stimuli. If you asked one of these subjects if they trusted the doctors to any meaningful extent, the reaction you would get would probably be one of confusion; they may trust the doctor in the sense that they believe that they will feed them throughout the experiment and in the sense that they probably won’t let them die while they are there, but there would still be a great deal of dissonance on a personal level. Their well-being is only as important to the doctors as its impact on their experiment.
So too with Watari. Watari runs his orphanage mainly to try and 100% the child-rearing thing, to raise the best and most accomplished kid possible and recreate it. His success is based on how successful his charges end up being, and L happens to be a charge so successful that his name is known the world over. L trusts him to the extent that he believes Wammy will stick around to see the experiment through. He trusts him to provide him with food and a computer and help with organizing, but if he was going through any sort of emotional turmoil he would never think to go to Watari about it. He’s a strange man who took him when he was seven and let him eat cake in his room with an unmonitored computer for days at a time, who allowed him to isolate himself from everyone else and spend weeks awake in a blank white room with no bed. Even if it weren’t for the backstory I have thought up for him, he would be able to identify that as neglectful the minute he started looking into laws pertaining to children. Watari does not care about him. Watari would like to see how far L can go on before something happens and wants everything he did on record so that he can recreate his happy accident. Watari believes him to be so expendable that he has two other Ls lined up in the event that he dies; to consider him a father would be exceptionally naive.
In all fairness L minds much. He had a father. His father was okay. He knew it was strange to go with Watari when he did. He would be a bit more weirded out if he was not as cold as he is towards him. He cares about Watari to the extent he cares about him, so it works out.

Do you think death note would be significantly different if Light (or L) was a woman? So much of Light's early characterisation is 'eldest son' how do you think 'eldest daughter' would change things?
Interesting question, that's very hard for me to answer actually. But let's try.
Sexism in Death Note
L is Woman
The thing about L is we don't know how/why Watari selected him. We don't know how they came in contact, why Watari set him up to be super detective and exactly how early that happened, and so on and so forth.
We do have a hint that L was around six or so when he was orphaned in that we get a hint of a flashback in the anime where Watari holds his hand when he's a small child seemingly at the gates of Wammy's, but we really know 0 about him other than that he did become this detective persona and that he keeps eating his rivals and stealing their names/business for himself.
Given L's incredibly young age and the successor program we see later run by a friend of Watari's who runs the orphanage, it seems like L was most likely Watari's idea and that Watari has a very particular vision in mind (that L does not always agree with).
What I'm getting at is, even if everything else is exactly the same, I don't know if a girl would be chosen as 'L' or an 'L' candidate by Watari and company.
The measurements on who gets to be L are deeply weird from the little we see of them. Neither Mello nor Near seem to have particularly relevant experience or much people skills. Mello's better in that respect than Near but it's clear this is... not valued highly given a) how L acts and behaves b) the fact that Mello is very clearly and narratively always second and never close to dethroning Near who has awful social skills. What seems to be most highly valued in an 'L' is 'intelligence' where that intelligence is measured... somehow. It's unclear if this is through puzzles like those Near solves, through academics, through intelligence exams, but what we do see is every successor we meet/L himself are men.
There's a panel where someone shouts "Linda" in the orphanage, but we never see this character and we can't assume they're part of the successor program at all.
And it wouldn't surprise me, from the little we do see, if the tests for who gets to be L aren't, either intentionally or not, geared such that men pass them more easily than women.
We also see that L has very few professional interactions with women. We don't see many of his contacts, but they are dominated by cis men. The few women we see are Wedy who is treated as... track suit boobs and Naomi Misora who is very brilliant/L acknowledges as very brilliant, but we don't see them interact at all (and if we take LABB is canon, when they did it was horrible).
L's is an incredibly masculine and cultivated world.
Basically, what I'm getting at is that I don't think a female L would have been selected to become L in the first place. She wouldn't have been supported by Watari, wouldn't have been given the endless funds and support needed to become the canon L, and Watari would instead be making someone else L (as he/Roger tried to do with Mello and Near).
L might become a detective, but I doubt she'd be reaching international acclaim and fame, certainly not as an anonymous detective. At most, and a generous most, she might be living a modern Ms. Marple lifestyle where this very weird woman shows up somewhere and oh no there's a murder, guess she's solving it.
Light is a Woman
You guessed it, I don't think she's becoming Kira.
The Yagami household is a modern but traditional household with traditional values. Sayu is the sweet young daughter who is supported but brilliant Light Yagami is the apple of the family's eye/especially his father.
It's a very male dominated household in that while we see Sachiko visibly upset by the Kira case destroying her family, she never openly comments on this, not even when Light disappears for months with no explanation, Soichiro stops coming home and the stress is visibly killing him, or later when Soichiro dies, Sayu is kidnapped, and Light himself finally dies.
Soichiro is all about his job where his family is there to support him in their given roles, Sachiko and Sayu in their roles, and Light in his more active role where he can join the police.
There is never any hint of discussing that Sayu should join the police force or should live anything but an ordinary life and get herself an ordinary boyfriend/husband.
We know before the series that Light had been involved, perhaps far more than appropriate, in the police with the support of his father. He geared his entire college education towards becoming a police officer and had had that goal since before the series began.
If Light's born a girl, I don't see her getting the same support, at all, by Soichiro. Soichiro does not want her or Sayu involved with grizzly homicide cases, doesn't want them becoming police officers in homicide, and does not want to discuss the details of any of his cases (which he never does canonically with the entire family/when it's not just Light).
Light is brilliant still and I'm sure Soichiro's very proud of her, but I imagine he'd want to steer her towards some other path, any other path. Light will go to a good university, will get excellent grades, will get a nice career, and then will get married to a fine young man (who perhaps is a cop).
And while a combination of ennui/mental breakdown was what fueled Light to become Kira, I don't know if female Light who's struggling to find what she wants to do with her life/somehow be the best that she can be and be acknowledged as better than everyone else will ever feel the idle curiosity to write in the notebook in the first place.
Though, if she does... I think she'd be all in for much the same reasons that Light was canonically, and with a lot of angst as

y-the-youthful:
“The concept of multiple miniature me’s going about is unsettling, but together we might make an average height teenager.” Still barely 4'6" it was a tragedy and a blessing to be so little especially with the knowledge of it being the start of a growth spurt. “I will say, though, that if Killer wanted to kill me so blatantly he would have done so already. Perhaps he is anxious that it would expose him so easily, or the rules don’t quite line up.”
She is not even looking at Light as she says this, and there is a crude truth to it. It is not so easy to kill a person with poison if poison simply does not work on them.
“L does eat other things, I know he does, but I swear he hides it from the others so he gets a reputation as a sugar freak, which he is, but still. I hold proudly onto the title of 'gets him to drink water every hour’. Not the most difficult customer I’ve had.”
She is marching out the door, a chipper smile on her face. Whatever comes of the Kira case, she still prefers the climate and environment of Tokyo to the secluded home of Wammy’s House too far away from people where it was far too easy for things to go horribly wrong and be the one trying to put others back together.
“You seem to be under the impression that I am an indulgent person.” There is a slyness to the smile, teeth glinting. “I will have you know I prefer normal food and I prefer making it. Old habits die hard, used to feeding an army.” Of genius children all very particular about their foods. As tempting as it was to indulge in something for herself, Yoriko was almost obsessive in documenting every scrap, squirreling away extras for the next food run. Even Watari had said there was no need for such strictness, they had the money for it, and had pitifully suggested she get a treat for herself for the hard work, but Yoriko would never slip from the habit. It was hers to keep and when the time came to return to the house, if she lived, the skill would be sharp as ever. “We must be severe.”
It is uncertain whether it comes across as enthusiastic in its firmness, or stressed.
Light's lips stretch to a thin line as the insinuation hits and sinks, leaving him with the bitter after-taste of being unable to end the life of this young creature here and now. Even if there are plenty of dangerous ideas forming already in his head to make it look like an unfortunate incident ─ ‘a small and innocent girl dies at an unknown age crashed by a trunk on the street while she is about to be reunited with his loving father...’
The teenager bathes in the mental image of said scene and internally laughs while purposely not watching Yoriko. He knows she's avoiding his gaze, playing a game in which they both know the other knows, but none is making a concrete move. Not yet.
If her small talks can be considered moves─ what a waste of time, ha ha!
"He might be sparing your insignificant life. Be thankful, at least." Light jokes, patting the girl on the head playfully as he would exactly do with Sayu. The thought is terrifying as he retreats his hand. "Water isn't proper nutrition, tho." Light doesn't think L acts the way he does only to get the reputation of a sugar freak ─ dark humor aside, the detective really doesn't know what a proper meal is. "You're failing at your job if you think that only liquids keep him vigilant and alive."
They're out in the streets as they talk, Light walking behind Yoriko and keeping an eye on her as if pondering to lead her on a leash ─ small, yes, but she marches like a soldier.
"You know, we're not meeting the end of the world or Third World War." Light comments skeptically, a brow yet raised in perplexed surprise. Does she really act like they could be running out of food at any rate? Is it the reason why she trained her stomach to digest even what could kill a human being? Light isn't sure if he really wants to know the real answer. So, sighing, he points at the closest supermarket. "I won't tell Ryuzaki if you buy yourself a treat."
"I have a secret to tell you. Not a fake one, but a real secret with a genuine truth. I am not actually eight. Nor am I twenty-seven. I am actually fourteen. That is why I am this evil. That is why I am cringe. A fourteen year old with a desire for silly crimes, also we are out of apples I am getting more, what do you need?" Yoriko shooting you down with all the psychic damage.
Conflicting emotions dwell in Light's measured long breath, like at any intake of air he is evaluating the pros and cons of showing his true nature to this little evil creature.
Between all the possible reactions, there is no real shock ─ though he has to admit it, it bothers him Yoriko is about the same age as his sister. As if it wasn't hard enough to act as the ideal big brother (don't get him wrong, he really loves Sayu), the awareness of all he knows about the subject is futile with Yoriko is slightly disturbing.
"Such a little menace for a big big world." He decides to say, suppressing the instinct of strangling her and poking at her good eye. The way she stares at him is so close to L's to sound almost unnerving. But he won't fall for the trick. He is no fool. "You're in the house of wolves, beware of not getting caught, mph."
He wonders if letting her go alone for a second still, then gets his jacket. "We ran out of coffee also. I'm going with you."

Imo Light can't be called a hero, in fact in the end he was getting so fixated with the idea of becoming the god of the new perfect world that he wanted every human on Earth to agree with, to the point where he started killing innocent people and was almost ready to kill his family. Manga Light could definitely be counted as a villain, anime Light at least reflected on his actions, maybe even regretted picking up the death note before his death. Seriously Light with his memories erased and the Kira!Light are like two different people...
But at the same time I'm so sick of people deifying L, saying that he's a "hero" with always good intentions. Like, L's goal was to catch Kira, to beat him in a game because he was bored. I'm not even sure that L really cared about Kira's true intentions. And to win the game, he also did selfish things that affected other people. If L was heroic, he would have solved more crime cases to benefit humanity, not just those that he was solely interested in. This quote describes the truth the best:
"Kira is childish and hates losing. I'm also childish and hate losing." - L Lawlight
And yet these two have the audacity to call themselves justice. What do you think about this?
I mean, that IS the point. Light and L are two sides of the same coin. Both characters:
1 - Show a disconnect from the rest of the world (Light has really shallow, basically performatic relationships with others, L has isolated him almost completely).
2 - Show little to no real care, respect, or affection to other people, with some exceptions (his sister and father for Light, Watari and Naomi for L).
3 - Are absolutely brilliant, and that contributes to their isolation (both because they can't relate to others AND because they see themselves as superior).
4 - Are VERY obsessive.
5 - Found something that allows them to get away with basically anything (L had money and influence, Light had his reputation and the death note, both had the fact that their crimes couldn't be connected to them).
6 - Did a few good things for completely wrong reasons (Light killed some truly awful people who would have hurted others if he had not killed them, L tried to capture a literal serial killer with a God complex).
7 - Did HORRIBLE things to try assuring their own victory.
These two are pretty much one in the same, that's why they got so fixated on each other. All the times they made the same monologue at the same time in different places were deliberate attempts at showing that the only thing that makes them different is circumstance.
Now, regarding regret and Light being a "completely" different person without his memories, we need to keep in mind that:
1 - The death note did NOT create Light's bad traits, it only intensified them AND gave him the means to get away with almost anything.
2 - Light was possessed by a "demon" (Shinigami) and that messed with his sanity. Like I said, it didn't change him COMPLETELY, but it did make him worse, and we don't know how things would have played out if he had the death note, but wasn't possessed.
3 - Both in the manga and in the anime, Light demonstrated some kind of regret/guilt. In the manga it is shown that he struggled to come to terms with what he had done once he started killing people, while in the anime he had that moment when he was moments away from being killed.
4 - L "joined" humanity when he accepted the fact that he was going to die. Light (in the manga) kept trying to separate himself from it by convincing himself that death would not be the end for him/that he was beyond being killed like a mere human, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. He was STILL forced to join the rest of humanity, and to truly become one in the same with his rival because, in Ryuk's own words, DEATH IS EQUAL.
Fans might love to misinterpret the "I am justice" speech as making it about either Light or L being correct, or even about them being the "two extremes of justice" as I've seen people claim once or twice, but the real point of the story is in the name DEATH Note. Death makes everyone the same. It just so happened that Light and L were the same while they were alive too.

DAY 6: hypothermia Alt prompt: “Left Behind”
A/N: You can read what happens earlier in this story on AO3.
*~*~*~*~*~*
I’m alone in a dark room. It feels small, but familiar.
The only glow coming from a computer monitor. No, a television…an old cathode ray tube.
It doesn’t have color. I pinch the antenna, Trying to make the picture come in clearly, And when it does, I’m sorry it did.
On the screen, I’m small, barefooted and bruised, blood dried to my once white shirt and mud caked to the bottom of my jeans. I grip my hands, tiny and filthy…so filthy…around the bars of the cage, damp and musty.
“Please let me out,” The child me cries.
“What are you watching?” A hand gently sets on my shoulder.
I turn to look up at her, but the glow makes it impossible for my eyes to adjust.
“A memory…a horrible memory. My parents died and I was left behind…One day Wammy will leave me behind and I will be alone again.”
“I’ll never leave you behind.”
“You won’t?”
I reach up and cup her cheek and I can feel her smile down at me.
“Nope. Never. I promise. You’ll never be alone again.”
L grumbled as he awoke, tired of this nighttime torment. Ever since his concussion, he had gotten enough sleep to last him a lifetime. Breathing in deeply, he stood up and scuffed his way to the window, looking out over the Winchester streets and staring down at the sidewalk he stood on so many years ago. His stomach twisted and he swore he could see the ghosts of the past, a younger him gripping the gloved hand of the man that would become his father.
“I see you’re awake.” Watari kept his voice quiet. “How is your head?”
“It hurts. It always hurts.” L continued to watch the world spin in the dim glow of dawn below them. “I know the pain will lessen with time, but these nightmares. I fear they will never leave me now. Avoiding sleep was key for keeping them at bay, but now…The demons have found their way back in and I am certain they will not be so easily exercised this time.”
A sadness pulled Watari’s face into a frown. He hated that L could only think of this mother and father as monsters that plagued him now instead of remembering the love they once showered him in. “Don’t worry about that right now, My Boy. We will cross that bridge when we come to it.”
L nodded, too tired to argue. “I don’t know why I’m exhausted. All I’ve done for the last week is succumb to sleep.”
“The doctor said it’s normal and it will just take time.”
“Well, it can stop anytime now. I’ve had quite enough.”
“That isn’t how recovery works, L.”
“I know that Wammy.” His words held a bite he didn’t mean and instantly regretted. “I’m sorry. I miss…I miss my cases. They distract me.”
“It’s alright. Scotland Yard sent over a case of a jewel thief in Leeds. Perhaps you would like to look it over. It’s in a new inspector’s jurisdiction, a man named Davidson. I see no harm in letting you read, as long as you promise to stop if your headache worsens.
“Trust me, Wammy. Nothing could make this any worse.”

Deathnote - Mu Chapter One lxlight 18+
L lay on the cold floor.
The room was dark, but you could see dim light around him, it was visible enough for him to make out a person in the darkness. The stranger slouched in his chair and sighed heavily. A glimmer of light shined faintly revealing the man's biker style clothing: red jacket, jeans, and leather boots but his face was shrouded with darkness. L could just about see his mundane expression as he got up from the floor peering closer. The man sat on his chair with his fist brought up to his chin appearing quite tired. He shifted his head lazily to the left surprised as he had not expected someone to be right in front of him especially not L of all people.
Leaning forward he stared at the peculiar man he used to know. The disbelief clouded his judgement and like that his eyes widened, and his jaw dropped. He simply could not believe what he was seeing; it had been his belief since day one that he would never see another human again. Yet here was the strange individual that he had not seen for years, 5 years in fact. He knew if it were not for their strong rivalry and his unique looks, L's face would have been forgotten completely.
"L... Are you real? " he stuttered lifting slightly from his seat as if he were seeing a mirage.
"Hello Kira-Kun," L answered avoiding his question whilst smiling. Light was puzzled and this pleased L greatly. He could not remember the last time he saw Light look this way.
"So, this is the place of nothingness," he added, looking around the desolate space. The room seemed to go on and on, clouded in complete blackness. Besides the one chair Light was sitting on as well as the side table with its vintage lamp which gave enough light to see one another it was a wasteland. L thought that though it appeared menacing in the dark with the little setup Light had it would be quite peaceful to relax and perhaps read a book. Or at least as peaceful as it could be here.
"It's pretty bland" Light stated nervously. Taking a deep breath he pointed to a replica of a chair that appeared in front of him.
L looked amazed, how was that possible, he was sure it was not there a second ago. No, he knew it was not there before.
"Please sit," Light said gesturing with his hands for the dark-haired detective to crouch in his seat, in the odd way he was known for doing.
"Kira-Kun please sit also," Light sat back down returning to his nonchalant behaviour. "Here I thought the justice driven L would end up in heaven but here you are" Light stated with a questioning look.
"Oh, don't act so sad about it am I really that bad?" L asked. "If you must know I wrote my name down before the Shinigami did, this made her efforts to kill me futile... I would also like to tell you that I did not appreciate that creepy smile Kira-Kun gave me," L exclaimed making Light roll his eyes. It had been so long since Light had seen him, yet he appreciated that the detective was still the same.
"You never change, do you? He chuckled lightly but L found it far from funny.
"You know I'm waiting, Kira-Kun," he says tapping his finger on the edge of the armrest. Light looked at him blankly
"For what?" he asked receiving a tired expression. The younger of the two sighed and took a large breath preparing himself to admit his defeat. "You were right as always I was Kira," Light answered.
"And" L moves his wrist for him to continue. Light raises an eyebrow and sighs again.
"You outsmarted me and survived... But then again you also died so we can hardly call that winning, can we? " he finishes, L opens his mouth to speak but Light shuts it as a Deathnote sits in his hand. "Hmm let's see here," Light flicks the pages to get to L's real name but before he could reach the end L grabs it. "How did you get this I destroyed it?" L asked concerned
"Oh, calm down I manifested it and it doesn't even take effect in here," Light explains.
L was well and truly stumped. He had to admit he never thought he would see Light again or anyone. L had felt miserable. The detective had had a shitty day he remembered he was counting the minute, dreading the thought of dying. He had expected that he would be briefly be alive and then dead, he would no longer exist. L believed he had seen everything in life, nothing ever confused him and he found no true excitement, no mystery could not be solved but ever since he met Light this had changed. He knew that from here on out it would only get stranger after all he was no longer in the real world anymore.
"Manifested?" he questioned squinting his eyes at the brunette, Light then placed two cups of hot tea on the table. He adds two sugars for himself and stops before asking
"It was 6 wasn't it?" he asked, L nodded astonished at the sight in front of him.
Light adds the sugar to the tea moving it toward his guest before taking a sip of his own. "I never knew how you could drink that. Isn't it all sludgy?" L became wide-eyed at Light's interest, he had never really commented on his behaviour all that much, it seemed funny that now he would question his actions.
"Would Light-Kun like to try?" Light gave the cup a pondering glance before looking back at L nodding. He takes the cup savouring the warmth with his hands.
"What happened to you calling me Kira-Kun?" Light asked.
"What? Would you prefer me to call you that?"
Light just shrugs the suggestion "Lights fine," he adds taking a sip and cringing at the so-called tea before passing it back to the amused L.
"I also favour Light to Kira, Light... was a friend to me,"
Light's cup slipped slightly from his finger making a loud clank, fortunately, it was not shattered to bits. Light was startled as he tried to steady his cup, he was looking at L as though he was speaking another language. It had been his sneaking suspicious the first time L had said that, that it was a farce, a ploy to intimidate or guilt him.
"You actually... like me? " Light asks sitting far back into his chair surprised.
"Of course, Light-Kun I liked you. Why didn't a tiny bit of you like me?" L asks amused.
"Well yes, Ryu... L... Well, I'll be honest I didn't like you one bit," He said whilst watching L's expression not change. "But thinking back now I have to admit there was something very endearing about you"
Light could remember all the moments where they would purposely annoy the living hell out of each other. It was only natural he thought, they both had such a strong character. He felt a bittersweet feeling in his stomach, he had never had such a strong interaction with anyone in his whole life. This was before he had met the infuriating detective and he remembered how he wished to squish him under his shoe. No one had ever gotten on Light nerves as much as he had. But his distaste toward L was all in the past and he knew that he deserved to be here. He didn't fault his own beliefs of killing those who deserved it but there were ever so many people caught involved that he had murdered in the process. Biting his lip, he continued to lose track of the man in front of him. This realization abruptly occurred in his mind as he awoke from his thoughts embarrassed that he was so caught up in his head. "Um, Ryuzaki... "
L looked at Light concerned before placing his finger under his chin raising his head up to face him. "It's Lawliet," L says smiling gently, knowing there was nothing to fear anymore. Light looked confused before he smiled cheekily
"Well really L? How in the hell would I have guessed that? " Light said chuckling.
"Oh, I'm sorry, would you have liked me to serve it up on a gold platter?" L says giving Light's notebook back. "Well now that you mention it," he says shielding himself before getting a playful hit on the arm. They both exchanged a smile and then L remembered the memento he had obtained.
"Oh here Light-Kun," he says removing the watch from his wrist and placing it in front of Light "Is that my …" Light starts. "Well now L, I never would have taken you as a grave robber," he says grinning.
"It's hardly stealing more like inherited," L stated. "I'm only sorry that I never repaired it," L exclaims feeling a strange sense of guilt, not only did the watch have a crack but it had also stopped ticking, simply frozen in time.
"Are you sure about that? It seems to be working just fine" Light asks. L leaned forward wide-eyed.
"Did you do that?" L asks pointing to Light receiving a cheeky expression. Light redirects his hand to the startled detective. Leaving L confused, he skimmed through the notebook "Ahh here it is L Lawliet. You wrote ... Will die quietly 23 days after Light Yagami's death." Light gave a scrawl towards L before sighing heavily. "It has only been 23 days since I died huh, feels like a billion," he says with a bored expression on his face.
"You know Kira-Kun when I think about it, I'm pretty annoyed at you. You are the reason we are stuck here in the first place. Not only that Watari is dead because of you," L states coldly. It had taken that self-absorbed expression on Light's face to remember this man was not truly his friend. How could you even consider him to be a friend for even a second, he questioned.
Light looked down again for the second time. Swallowing loudly, he scratched the back of his neck giving L an anxious look "I really don't know what to say... I fucked up I don't even know how it even got to this point." He exclaimed refusing to look at L.
"At first, when the Death Note fell to the ground, I used it to kill bad people. It was something that made me feel like I was making a difference. I couldn't stand seeing these people doing such disgusting things and always getting away with it. I remember my father coming home every night looking older and older after witnessing all these horrible cases. I remember the dread on his face sometimes when he had to go in. Although he wouldn't admit it, my father is... my father was proud and wouldn't have let anyone know how he truly felt. I knew exactly what the punishments were going to be. All those cases where they were let off or got it too easy, it was sickening. I had grown tired of seeing good people suffer whilst evil people lived, waiting to be released to only continue to be cruel. It was truly disgusting. The legal system did not make it better, releasing rotten people for good behaviour when those bad people didn't have the balls to behave badly. Then there was those who faked good behaviour to get out sooner. It was truly repulsive to watch!" Kira growled, feeling all of his rage resurface.
He had spent many days trying to get rid of these feelings. God knows he had tried ever since he was little to accept the fact there were bad people. But let's face it even from the beginning before he had tested the notebook's power, he was intrigued at the idea that it could actually work. In fact, he needed it to work.
Light had been damn near perfect at everything, but he had lost his sense of joy for relishing over his own achievements. But being Kira was different. He found that he would gladly kill for himself. This was for him; this was something that meant something to him! Not to his parents or "friends". Not to those girls that would count all his achievements as reasons why Light was the perfect package for them. He had found something that was important, something that made him feel alive, that brought peace of mind. But the last shred of his humanity died when he killed L. Lind Taylor, it was then that he murdered a man he believed to be innocent. He believed it was L and he remembered the anger he felt when the man had called him "evil" the anger was too much for him to bear and that's when he had thrown away his morals completely. He had not only ruined himself, but he was responsible for killing those who didn't deserve it, he had gotten his father killed, his sister kidnapped and sent to a psychiatric hospital and this, of course, hurt his mother, the woman who had only supported him and was proud of him. The guilt that he had swallowed, starting to come up his throat and he felt it choking him.
He breathed in slowly gaining composure "But that is no excuse to harm you or Watari and I know it's not much but I'm truly sorry," Light sorrowfully said feeling his guilt rest in his stomach. L looked at him blankly he could see the emotions registering on Light's face. He practically saw the words and thoughts Light had, he knew that Light was in pain, broken and was swimming in guilt. He always wondered when Light would sink, after all he had done so much wrong. He knew he must have been in a numb state of repression, but he knew Light had never let himself feel. Since he had met him, Light appeared to always be in fight or flight mode. Everything he said and did was done for the purpose of survival, he never slipped up, he never let himself show any emotions. L could not help but relate to Light. L had been solving crimes for years and from working on cases he knew they were far from rejoiceful. It had been sickening at times and he knew that it brought him in terrible states as well as contributed to his insomnia. He could not fault Light's feelings. L felt his anger dissolve and his desire to make Light feel better grew.
"Forget it Light-Kun, it is all in the past, "L says gently. Light raised his head as if to say something but found himself apologetically smiling. "Now Light-Kun I wish to know more about manifesting. Show me how to do it, I wish for something sweet,"
"Okay I'll try and help you," he said sitting up. "Close your eyes. Now think of the thing you want. Now imagine it is with you let your senses become involved, smell it, taste it. Now believe it is here... Did you want a smartie?" L opens his eyes to see a singular sweet.
"Hmm... only one," L scowls. Before picking it up and eating it, tsking. L looked irritated, he had wanted a bowl of them, and here he was with one. It wasn't the fact that L had only managed to get one that was annoying, it was the tired feeling that came with manifesting it. Light couldn't bear seeing L scrawl, it had made him think L was behaving cute, which would certainly not do.
"Dear Lord. Stop pouting. You've made one, didn't you? You'll get better with practice, as well as rest," Light states feeling warmth grow in his cheeks.
"Kira-Kun is very testy right now, is it that he thinks of my unsuccessful attempt as a reminder of his own failure?" L says smiling, to this Light does something L never expected he would do. Light had turned to him and stuck his tongue out
"Isn't that a little immature? " L laughs.
"Perhaps," Light says throwing a smartie at L
"Now Light-Kun no throwing," Light grins evilly
"I thought you wanted smarties," he asks making a bunch rain on top of L before bursting out laughing. L sits there stunned before retrieving the sweets and eating them "That was very naughty Light-Kun," L exclaimed waging his finger in front of Light. Before drenching cold water all over Light grinning at his triumph.
"Ughh, really L really!" he says feeling cold.
"Light-Kun should wear something else before he freezes to death" Light chuckles at him "Sorry L but we're already dead can't get any deader," he says starting to remove his clothes. "Can't Light-Kun make more appear on his body instead of changing?" L asks "Why? Does me undressing make you uncomfortable?" Light asks teasingly.
"No of course not I just wish to know," he answered closing his eyes and turning slightly to the side with a blush on his face. Light smiled "I have to remove my clothes to manifest new ones" he answers.
"You know you don't have to watch me I'm not your Kira suspect anymore," Light says almost singing it. L freezes before looking away realizing what he had been doing. Ha Light thought. "All finished," he adds. Turning to L's flushed face smiling to himself. Why was he so cute when he blushes Light questioned.
"You know L even though you're a stubborn pest, I kind of like you being around," Light said surprising himself. Did I really say that? He asked himself looking back up to L noticing his expression.
The look on L's face showed he was touched. Never had anyone said anything so nice to him. From hearing other people's opinions on him he could say their opinions had been more than unsatisfactory. He recalled Naomi Misora and what she had told him a couple of months before the Kira case. He remembered asking about his double Beyond Birthday, he was only curious. Beyond was a man that looked so incredibly similar to him. His actions, his quirks, and even the way he spoke were close to identical. To this question he had gotten the most critical and heart-wrenching answer that he had ever heard.
"Creepy and pathetic... if we divided everyone in the world into those that would be better off dead and those that wouldn't there's no doubt in my mind that he'd be the former. Such a complete freak that it amazes me he hasn't killed himself," Stated Misora.
It had made L feel inadequate and useless as if he were nothing. But here stood Light gleaming at him and complimenting him. He held his gaze at Light before rising from his seat embracing him. Light was frozen, but he soon regained control of his arms and hugged L back smelling the sweet scent in L's hair. Coconut? What an intoxicating smell he thought. Smelling his hair much deeper this time he found himself wanting to play with it. L's grip slightly tightened he had never really been the hugging type but the way he felt inside he knew he had missed out all those years. All that time staying alone but at this moment he had been struck by Lights words. Why? They weren't particularly sweet words.
"You know L even though you're a stubborn pest, I actually kind of like you being around". It was then he felt Light's fingers moving up towards his neck. "Light..." he started feeling Light's soft lips kiss his forehead. It had happened so fast L had wondered whether he had imagined it. L felt the chair distort and transform into a soft couch under him. Light moved the detective back, tracing his finger softly down his cheek. L felt a shiver along his spine as his head started to cloud over. Looking into Light's eyes he could see that they were clouded with something he had never seen before.

Blue Star | Oikawa x Reader | Ch.1
- Pairing: Oikawa Tooru x Reader
- Word Count: ~ 3,900
- Genres: Fluff, angst, Ushijima doesn’t know what a meme is
- CW: Mild swearing
- Summary: Sometimes, (Y/N) wonders if it was hard for her father to send her away. To a new prefecture, a new home, a new school. It all just might be worth it when after becoming the (suspiciously knowledgeable) manager of the Aoba Johsai boys’ volleyball club, she meets Oikawa Tooru. Together, they do their best to exorcise demons they thought would never leave. They learn about progress, when to strive for it, and when to accept the realities that cannot be changed.
Chapters: First | Previous | Next
Sweaty and shaking, (Y/N) sat upright in an unfamiliar bed in an unfamiliar room. The walls were eggshell white, bare, pristine as if they had been untouched. There were no souvenirs or personal belongings anywhere, save for a short pyramid of boxes sitting in the corner.
Stiff, unused sheets wrapped around her, nothing like her beloved bed set back home.
‘Oh, that’s right…” she thought, ‘This is home now.’
Her mind flashed back to the busy day before, where she said goodbye to her mother and had the movers bring only some of her belongings to her new apartment so that the space didn’t completely fill up with unpacked boxes.
After some long, deep breaths, (Y/N) turned her attention to the obnoxious noise her phone was making.
The overly bright device read ‘6:20’.
(Y/N) flopped back down on her bed.
She ran a hand down her face, groaning.
“I don’t really need an education, right? I’m still pretty flexible. I could probably drop out and become a stripper, right, Hubble? The club down the street is always trying to hire new people.”
Across the room, the round orange tabby gazed back at her judgmentally.
The teen rolled her eyes at her pet, “Thanks for the support, Hubs.”
Once in the bathroom after a long struggle to drag herself out of bed, (Y/N) rested her weight against the sink. Gently touching the bags under her eyes, she sighed.
“I’ve looked better,” she said to herself, “Hey! Bad kitty!”
She tried to nudge Hubble off the counter, only for the feline to look at her with a look of even lesser interest than she gave frogs or mice.
Realistically, (Y/N) could lift the cat of the counter herself, but honestly, she didn’t have the energy to do so.
Rather than get dressed for school, she sat down on the edge of the custom made bathtub.
Lips pursed, she said to her cat, “Hey, at least you got to come with me, rather than stay home with mom and dad. That’s good.”
Hubble gave her the facial equivalent of crickets chirping.
Snatching her new uniform from its hook, yanking the brown plaid skirt up her thighs, she grumbled to herself, “First I get exiled to a whole new prefecture, and now I’m talking to my cat, who has also decided to be a dick to me, but this is what I needed, right?” she asked sarcastically, “A ‘change of pace.’”
She tucked in the lilac dress shirt far more aggressively than necessary. Her sigh of relief was cut short when she spotted the cream vest and a blazer that she had to wear.
“Why does this stupid uniform have so many damn layers!” she screamed into the empty apartment.
Soon after, her shoulders sagged in resignation. Expertly lacing up the uniform tie, she sighed for the nth time since she woke up. There was no use fighting it any more. This empty, desolate apartment was her new home. Aoba Johsai was her new school. No amount of anger was going to change that.
She recalled the conversation she had with her childhood friend before she left.
“Wakatoshi said to just keep to myself. That’s easy. I can do that. Of course…” she glanced over to the box pyramid on the other side of her bare apartment.
(Y/N) stalked over, picking up the box on top, securely sealed with red duct tape. A scowl marred her already unpleasant expression.
Desperate to get it out of her sight, she shoved the box unceremoniously into her deep bedroom closet, where it (hopefully) would never bother her again.
~~
“It’s kind of weird to get a transfer student in the middle of second year.”
“Maybe one of her parents got a new job or something.”
“What if she’s a delinquent?”
‘You know, it costs you nothing to mind your own freaking business.’
“All right, class, settle down,” the teacher raised her voice just slightly. “This is (L/N) (Y/N). She’s our new transfer student, and she’ll be the boys’ volleyball club manager this year. Make sure you all treat her well. Please have a seat in front of Iwaizumi-san.”
(Y/N) bowed, “Thank you, Yukino-sensei.”
The woman nodded, “Of course. I hope you enjoy your time here at Aoba Johsai.”
(Y/N) slid into the desk in front of a tan, spiky-haired boy who she recognized from middle school, only now it looked like his biceps were about to bust his uniform sleeves. It took her a second to realize who it was.
“Hajime!”
(Y/N) froze, worried they were no longer on a first-name basis, but the teenager just smiled back at her.
“(Y/N)! How’ve you been?”
“Eh, same old, same old. But it looks like you’re doing great! You’ve gotten so much bulkier since middle school! What have they been feeding you?” she said, causing him to laugh and ruffle her hair.
In fear of Yukino-sensei’s wrath, the class stayed relatively quiet. Though, people were stealing glances at her a noticeable amount. In their defense, they had a valid reason. One of the most intimidating students alive was being extremely friendly to an unknown, unheard transfer student. The stares were annoying, but not distractingly so.
The moment the final bell rang, a cluster of students swarmed (Y/N)’s desk.
“(L/N)-san, why did you transfer?”
“Do you have a boyfriend?”
“(L/N)-san, how did you get the manager position?”
Ah, the manager position. That one came up a lot. Honestly, she didn’t see why people were so worked up over it.
She couldn’t exactly ignore her classmates, so she responded in as few words as possible, “I had to,” “No,” “I asked for it.” She kept her answers brief, hoping her fellow students would find the lack of response boring rather than alluring.
“(L/N),” Iwaizumi called out.
Her head immediately snapped to where he was standing by the door.
“You’re our new manager, right? Want me to show you where the gym is?” he asked gruffly.
(Y/N) grabbed her school supplies and practically ran over to Iwazumi, who had a tall brunette boy standing behind him.
“I’d appreciate that, thank you.”
On the walk to the gym, Iwaizumi introduced the brunette, Oikawa, to her.
“I was Iwa-chan’s handsomer, much more popular friend, remember?”
Oh, she definitely remembered him. Was she about to tell him that, though? Not a chance. She pretended to think for a moment, then shook her head.
“I’m sorry, Oikawa-san, that doesn’t ring a bell.” She tilted her head, “Besides, Hajime here is a perfect 10, so I don’t know where this ‘handsomer’ business came from.”
While Oikawa stopped in indignation, (Y/N) walked on as Iwaizumi followed, laughing shamelessly.
“It’s not like you remember me, either,” she added.
Oikawa pouted, “That’s not my fault! I was invested in volleyball, not cute girls.”
(Y/N) ignored him and the three of them walked along the school hallway in silence for a while. (Y/N) did her best to keep her mouth shut, but her curiosity got the better of her.
“Hajime? Do you know why the manager position is so important to people around here?” she asked tentatively.
Iwaizumi barked a laugh, “That’s because--”
“-because I’m on the volleyball team! The manager gets to spend time near me, which is something pretty much everyone around here wants,” Oikawa winked and made his signature peace sign.
He grinned charmingly at (Y/N). Iwaizumi facepalmed. (Y/N) stared back blankly.
“Sure,” she deadpanned.
“Huh? You’re the one that asked!” Oikawa protested.
“She didn’t ask for an egotistical answer like that, Crappykawa,” Iwaizumi growled. He turned to (Y/N) once again, “As annoying and stupid as that answer is, he’s not entirely wrong. He’s really popular for some reason.”
“Weird.”
“I know, right?”
“Hey, don’t gang up on me!”
(Y/N) ducked under Oikawa’s arm into the gym, turning slightly to thank him over her shoulder. The first person to greet her was the short, stout Seijoh head coach.
“Well, if it isn’t (L/N) (Y/N). You have no idea how happy I was to hear you’d be transferring to our school,” Coach Irihata gave the teen a small nod. “Though, I wish it were under different circumstances,” he grimaced.
(Y/N) bowed at him respectfully, “You and I both, Coach. I’ll put all my focus into being your team manager from now on.”
The older man laughed, “I don’t doubt that. Let me introduce you to the team.”
He led her to stand at the edge of the court.
“This here is Mizoguchi, the coach. He’s a bit of a hardass.”
“Are you allowed to be saying these things, Coach?”
“Were you planning on reporting me, (L/N)?”
“Touche.”
Coach Mizoguchi had all the boys line up. The two coaches and (Y/N) walked down the line.
“These are our first-years, Kyoutani, Watari, and Yahaba. Our second years, Matsukawa, Hanamaki, Iwaizumi, Oikawa--”
‘They’re an odd group. Not horrible mismatched, but definitely not inherently interwoven like other teams I’ve seen.’
“We’ll be playing quick, 3-on-3 practice matches so (Y/N) can see what you can do.”
Some of the boys looked surprised, others even leaned over  and whispered confused words to each other. At the same time, their new manager felt every drop of blood draining out of her face.
(Y/N) leaned in, “Coach, may I speak to you for a moment?” she whispered frantically.
Irihata allowed her to lead him out of earshot.
“I know I’ve asked a lot of you lately, Coach, but if we could call as little attention to me as possible, I would be eternally grateful. I doubt anyone will say anything, but if we could avoid giving them unnecessary hints, that would be ideal.”
He quirked a brow slightly, “(L/N), this is just a small request. You don’t have to grovel every time you ask something of me.”
(Y/N) fiddled with her track jacket, “I know. You’ve just done so much for me already.”
“So much by your standards, very little by mine. All I had to do was put in a good word for you. You secret’s safe with me, (L/N). Do your best as our manager,” he clapped her on the shoulder before gesturing for her to head back to the courts.
By the time practice was over, the players were all dog-tired and drenched in sweat. Despite the fact that her brain had gone numb from the busy analysis, she felt she had gotten a good grasp of the team’s individual and group abilities, having written mini reports in her notebook about all the players, their habits, and how they work together. Each player’s individual page included a few people they worked especially well with, but (Y/N) noticed that everyone worked especially well with Oikawa. He seemed to bring out the most ability and talent in everyone he set for.
It was unfair, really. Such amazing athletic talent, coupled with fluffy brown curls and a sharp jawline, only to be spoiled by a smug, flippant attitude.
Earlier, she’d made the mistake of letting him catch her staring once. The corners of his lips quirked up slightly, causing her to look away quickly.
(Y/N) changed back into her school uniform and locked up the main gym. Shouldering her bag, she noticed the lights on inside one of the smaller gyms.
She stepped inside to see Oikawa practicing his sets against the wall. He’d taken the time to change out of his sweaty practice gear, but he just changed into clean, dry practice gear.
“Oikawa-san?” she called out.
The setter caught the ball and turned his attention to her, “Ah, (Y/N)-chan! Heading home already?”
She nodded, “Yeah. You’re still going to be practicing for a while?”
A look of annoyance flashed across his face before returning to his usual carefree expression.
“Yes, I will be.”
(Y/N) nodded, taking a few steps in to set the master key on the bleachers, “I’m heading home, so please be sure to lock up when you’re finished.”
Had she stayed just a second longer, she’d have seen the slightly dumbfounded, mostly intrigued look on Oikawa’s face.
~~
“Wakatoshi, I’m having the time of my life!”
“That’s an unexpected response, though I’m happy for you,” Ushijima’s slightly pixelated voice came from (Y/N)’s firepods.
“I’ve been keeping to myself enough where no one bothers me, I get to manage the volleyball team, and I’ve had two whole weeks of fucking peace here. All my hopes and dreams have come true.”
“Well, not all of them--”
“Stuff it, Ushijima, I know,” she grumbled.
A deep chuckle rumbled from his chest, “Sorry, sorry. Have you met Oikawa Tooru yet?”
(Y/N) frowned, dodging a group of boys walking down the hall in the opposite direction.
“Yes,” she said in a small voice.
“Why did you say it so quietly?”
“No reason,” she said just as quietly.
“You find him attractive, don’t you?”
“What? Him? But he’s so-- he’s such a flirt! He always has girls hanging around him and he always looks so pleased with himself. Not to mention he’s a genuinely amazing setter and he’s a considerate captain and--”
“So, you do find him attractive?”
“I mean,” (Y/N) huffed, stopping outside the equipment room door, “Yes.”
“More attractive than Semi?”
“I’d say they’re about the same.”
“Wow. That’s a high compliment coming from you.”
“Isn’t it? But-- Oh, I gotta go, Wakatoshi, I need to fill the water cooler.”
“I’ll talk to you tonight.”
“Later!”
(Y/N) was breathing hard as she carried the water cooler from the equipment room to the gym. She wondered if they could get a wagon or some sort of wheels so she didn’t have to pull a muscle just to fill the cooler every practice. Better yet, maybe just let them die of dehydration so she wouldn’t have to move at all.
Sigh.
No, (Y/N), this isn’t that type of school.
Finally making it to the gym, she took a deep breath and shuffled inside. Almost immediately after she set foot in the gym, all of a sudden, the water cooler had slammed back into her, pouring its icy contents all over her and her uniform.
She fell flat on her ass, rubbing the sore spot on her chin where the plastic had knocked into it.
‘Someone around here wants me to relieve them of both their arms,’ she thought.
“Kyoutani!” she heard Mizoguchi yell, “How did your spike end up all the way over there?”
She didn’t get the chance to hear the first-year’s reply before Coach Irihata kneeled in front of her, the boys crowding around the two of them.
‘No, no. Deep breaths, (Y/N). It was just an accident. Breathe in, breathe out. In, then out.”
Taking a final deep breath, she looked up, smiled sweetly and said, “Don’t worry. It’s just a little water.”
Iwaizumi came up behind her and hauled her up by the armpits, “You alright?”
(Y/N) nodded in affirmation.
Oikawa passed her a large - presumably his -  Seijoh BVBC sweater. She fully expected him to say something that would get him smacked by Iwaizumi, but was surprised to see him walk away almost immediately.
~~
Stepping out of the locker room, (Y/N) looked up at the dark evening sky.
“It’s already this dark?” she wondered aloud.
“Yep. It’s that time of the year,” came a voice from behind her.
Oikawa stepped out from the boys’ locker room, hair still damp, and aqua t-shirt clinging to his skin slightly from the moisture.
She stared at him.
He tilted his head. “I do take breaks sometimes, you know,” he said as if he’d read her mind.
“Could’ve had me fooled,” she replied, gathering her composure and making her way towards the front gate.
“See you tomorrow, (Y/N)-chan,” he waved her goodbye.
“See you tomorrow.”
Exiting the school gate, they both turned left, ending up walking the same direction anyway. They chuckled awkwardly.
“Never mind, then,” Oikawa smiled.
“I’m getting on the G-train and going down 6 stops. You?”
“G-train, 8 stops,” he gasped,  “(Y/N)-chan, we live so close! We can hang out together every day!” he teased.
(Y/N) huffed, turning away so the brunette couldn’t see her smiling, “We already hang out every day, nerd.”
“How hurtful! I can never spend too much time with you, (Y/N)-chan,” he nudged her playfully with his elbow, letting out a small ‘oof’ when she pushed him back.
They got on the G-train, which was mostly empty around this time of night. Their car held them and two other girls from their school, who seemed to pay them little mind, aside from the occasional glances that were typical in Oikawa’s presence.
The brunette stared down his nose at her, “So. Are you ever gonna tell me why our brand new lady manager has an abnormally thorough knowledge of volleyball?” he questioned.
(Y/N) took a seat across from Oikawa. He made himself comfortable opposite her.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about Oikawa-san,” she said innocently.
Oikawa leaned forward in his seat.
“I saw your notebook. Your notes are way too detailed for anyone less than an expert. Did you or a family member or a friend or whatever play?”
Her gaze turned downcast. The train car was relatively empty, and he seemed genuine enough for her to softly reply, “I used to.”
There are two specific expressions (Y/N) saw the most of in the months following the incident.
One was less common. It was a thinly-veiled smugness, poorly hidden behind feigned sympathy. It was a look that said, “You got exactly what you deserved.”
The second was much more common, and on the days that made her want to lay in bed all day, seeing that expression plastered all around her like wallpaper just made her want to dig into the earth and make a home for herself there forever.
Pity.
It’s the same look every time. Their eyebrows go up, then furrow, finally slanting down as the realization dawns on them. Their mouth will drop open like they plan to say something, but no words come out because what are they supposed to say?
He must have seen the look of anguish on her face, because his expression morphed through each phase of that second type, word for word.
“You don’t play anymore because you won’t or because you--”
A dark shadow crossed her face, “I’d rather not talk about it.”
Oikawa nodded, “Okay.” His pretty brown eyes rolled up to the ceiling in deep thought. “What’s your favorite cake flavor?”
(Y/N) blinked at him confusedly for a moment, then her expression shifted to one of realization, and she gave him a small smile, the most genuine he’d ever seen her wear since she arrived at Aoba Johsai.
“Red velvet!”
“That’s just chocolate with red food coloring.”
(Y/N) gasped loudly, “You take that back!”
Oikawa raised his hands in defense, “I’m sorry, I only speak facts. Is now a bad time to mention I love pineapple on pizza?”
(Y/N)’s jaw dropped, “Are you serious? Do you even have taste buds, pretty boy?”
The taller male laughed and teasingly batted his lashes, “You think I’m pretty, (Y/N)-chan?”
She rolled her eyes, “I don’t know how to tell you this, Oikawa, but everyone thinks you’re pretty. You literally have a fanclub. They bring you homemade cookies on a regular basis.”
He got up from his seat across from her, only to settle down in the seat beside her. They sat there, shoulders against each other’s. Oikawa Tooru smelled like mint and the breeze on a summer night and a little bit of man sweat, but that’s to be expected coming straight from practice. It was a very distracting few seconds.
“But I don’t care about everyone’s opinion, (Y/N)-chan, I want yours.”
(Y/N)’s cheeks buzzed with heat. Ugh, he’s unfairly cute, isn’t he? But! Even if she would never tell him, she remembered him from middle school. He didn’t remember her. A guy like Oikawa was probably flirting with her because she didn’t fall desperately at his feet. She wasn’t going to be a part of that game. Not now, not ever.
At the sound of her stop, she stood and made her way over to the door. Just forcing the blood in her cheeks down through sheer willpower, she said, “I’ll see you in school tomorrow, Oikawa-san.”
Oikawa leaned back in his seat.
“Hey, (Y/N)? You’re not thinking I’m flirting with you because I’m some tail-chasing fuckboy, right? Because if you are,” he quirked a perfect eyebrow at her, “That’s hardly fair, is it?”
‘What? How did he know??’ she internally screamed, ‘He’s right, though. A lot of girls like him, but it’s not like he has a reputation for sleeping around or anything. Even if he did, that’s not for me to judge.”
(Y/N) braced herself against the open train doors. The cool night air blew into the train from behind her, ruffling her uniform skirt. She groaned.
“That smug face you make when you know you’re right? Yeah, I hate it.”
The setter’s hand came up to rest under his chin, “But you do have an opinion about my face?”
“Goodnight, Oikawa.”
“Text me when you get home!”
“I don’t--”
“Ask Iwa-chan for it! Goodnight, (Y/N)-chan!”
The train doors shut, and Oikawa sent her a wink through the glass doors before it departed. The breeze ruffled (Y/N)’s hair. There she stood, staring at the empty tracks. Rooting through her bag, she yanked her phone out and dialed a number.
“Wakatoshi, I’ve been a dumb hoe.”
“(Y/N), I told you you shouldn’t--”
“I shouldn’t belittle myself, even as a joke, I know, I’m sorry, Wakatoshi.”
She could feel him shaking his head in disapproval, “Right. Now, what’s your issue?”
Fingers fiddling with the hem of the borrowed oversized Seijoh sweatshirt, (Y/N) pressed her phone between her ear and shoulder.
“I accidentally made friends.”
Ushijima sighed on the other end of the line, “(Y/N), when I said to keep to yourself, I did not mean you had to become a total recluse. You may not want to hear this from me, but meeting new friends is a good thing.”
(Y/N) slowly shook her head, “They’re pretty popular, though, and the last thing I wanted since coming here was to call attention to myself.”
“You may have gotten some unwanted attention at your old school, but maybe you can start over at Aoba Johsai. If we want the rewards of being loved, we have to submit to the mortifying ordeal of being known.”
“...are you using a meme to give me advice?”
“A what?”
“A meme, Wakatoshi. It’s a joke passed all over the internet. Come on, there’s no way you haven’t seen them, even accidentally.”
“I am unfamiliar with the term. Anyway, I was quoting renowned columnist and cartoonist Tim Kreider. I was trying to make you feel better.”
Though he couldn’t see it, (Y/N) smiled warmly at how hard he was trying to help.
“You did a great job, Wakatoshi. Hey, I just got home, I’ll call you back and we’ll talk all about your day. How’s that?”
“Alright, get inside safely.”
Upon hanging up with Ushijima, (Y/N)’s hand stopped just short of putting her phone away. Perhaps against her better judgement, she reluctantly sent one more text.

Note
I'm interested to know what do you think would make Beyond & L cry? Like silently tearing up to full on body rocking sobs. Sorry if you've already done this one.
Beyond:
B is only five years old when his mother dies in the freak train derailing accident. He knows that the numbers above her head are getting very short, and he wants to stop her from leaving, but money is tight, and she has a job offer in the city that she cannot refuse. He’d tried to tell his parents about the numbers many times before, but they’d always aimed to stamp such troubling talk out, believing it to be merely B’s big imagination, or perhaps some sort of burgeoning mental illness that they didn’t have the time nor resources to properly deal with.
B becomes a frantic holy terror in the days leading up to his mother’s trip, trying everything he can think of to make her cancel her plans: he fakes sick, he jumps off the roof of the shed to sprain both his ankles, he hides her coat and all her shoes, he cuts the cord to the phone. His parents see all of this as mere horrible temper tantrums, and he’s locked in his bedroom for two days with no meals. He’s inconsolable the night she leaves, bawling to the point of being sick several times. It isn’t until they get the news of the train accident that his father finally lets B out of his bedroom and starts taking his talk about the numbers above people’s heads very seriously.
The only other time B ugly cries in his life is when A dies, even though he’d always known it was coming. He’d tried not to get close to A, but couldn’t help but love him fiercely anyway. B did not know heartache could be so visceral. He is shocked by how wracked his body is with physical pain; in his mind’s eye he keeps seeing himself as a bear trap rusted shut, because he is so doubled over with grief that he feels he literally cannot uncurl himself or stand up straight or do anything but lie in bed with his knees clutched to his chest, shaking with rage and misery and fear.
 L:
If L ever cries, it is never in front of anyone else. Watari never witnesses him crying once in his life, not even as a small child or a teen, and he often worries and wonders about L because of this.
The closest Watari gets to seeing him cry is the night before L plans to give the order to test the Death Note, when L unexpectedly pays him a visit in the surveillance room. L seems calm, but his eyes are red-rimmed, and his nose looks raw, and the ends of his sleeves are soggy and balled up in his fists. He won’t respond at all when Watari asks him what’s the matter, but he very obviously does not want to be alone; Watari finally just makes him a cup of tea and takes him up to his bed. Watari tucks L in and sits in a chair next to the bed and tells him many soothing stories from his own childhood and about the latest goings-on at Wammy’s, until L finally falls asleep.

Who Said Death Was Easy? [Death Note] Chapter Twenty-nine
Chapter Twenty-nine: Irritation
Day Five of Surveillance
Keiko’s POV:
“You know what, Mr. Stalker,” Misa suddenly called out, grabbing both L and Keiko’s attention, “your video won’t sell if it’s just me sitting here the whole time…why don’t you loosen me up? It’ll be more...interesting...that way, and I promise I won’t run away. I’ll do whatever you say. Please. I just don’t want to be stuck like this anymore.”
Keiko heard the detective let out a soft sigh right next to her. It was clear that he was rather annoyed at the fact that Misa was still keeping up this whole stalker act.
She had to admit, it was a little irritating to her as well. Keiko knew full well that Misa Amane wasn’t innocent. After all, she had willingly kissed Light knowing that he was in a relationship with Keiko at the time. It still bothered her that she had fallen for Misa’s little friendly act the first time around, and she wasn’t about to let that happen a second time. In fact, she wasn’t sure if she could trust Misa Amane ever again.
“There she goes again,” L muttered. Keiko glanced over at him as he continued on, “I mean, surely she must realize that I won’t fall for her little charade...it’s way too ridiculous. Does she honestly think she can get out of this if she keeps this up?”
Keiko watched as L then shifted his attention from the blonde haired model to Soichiro Yagami. Her gaze followed his, and she also studied Light’s father, noticing his disheveled hair and bloodshot eyes. It wasn’t like Light or Misa were in mint condition either, the two of them also didn’t look that good. Misa’s blonde hair had lost its sleek shine long ago, and Light had barely moved from his spot in front of the bed. It was almost as though he was starting to lose his spirit. However, it was obvious that the chief’s condition was far worse in comparison.
It looks like Light’s father hasn’t slept since he’s been locked up...in fact, he actually probably hasn’t. I can only imagine what he must be feeling like right now. I only recently had the chance to get to know and fall for Light Yagami. His father loved Light since the moment he was born, actually no, probably since the moment he first knew his wife was pregnant. This has to be extremely difficult for him.
“Yagami-san looks pretty bad...no he looks absolutely terrible. It’s clear that, out of the three of them, he’s taking it the worst,” L commented after a long while of staring at the dejected policeman.
Keiko tucked a wayward strand of hair behind her ear. She had been thinking the same thing, and she didn’t doubt that the Task Force had been thinking it as well. However, L had been the only one to voice it. Somehow that little fact didn’t surprise her, by now she was used to L’s bluntness.
“Well of course...what did you expect, Ryuzaki-san?” Matsuda responded, “it’s been five days since Light Yagami, his only son, was imprisoned and since then not a single criminal has been killed. In these sorts of situations, I think the parents must suffer a lot more than the one accused.”
“No kidding,” Aizawa added, “especially now that we are seeing proof firsthand that Light is Kira.”
There was a chill that ran down Keiko’s spine, and she fought the urge to shiver. Aizawa was right, the fact that no new criminals had been killed meant that things didn’t look too good for her ex-boyfriend.
Of course, Kira’s taken short breaks in the past, but if he doesn’t kill soon...well...then my ex-boyfriend really is Kira. If Light Yagami is Kira then that means I was in love with a murderer...a mass murder...not only that, it would pretty move prove that Misa Amane was his Second Kira...meaning that I was the biggest fool of all.
Keiko could feel the tears threatening to form in the corner of her eyes, so she gave her arm a hard pinch. She then drew a deep breath in an attempt to further try and calm herself down. There was no way she could lose it in front of the other detectives.
Relax, Keiko...it’s only been five days. Kira’s been inactive for seven days before, a whole week. Keep that in mind. There’s still a chance that Light isn’t actually Kira. It’s possible that the real Kira just had a horribly timed break from killing off criminals.
It took a few more seconds of self convincing, but soon Keiko was no longer in danger of crying. She definitely didn’t want to cry, not in front of L and the rest of the Task Force. That would only be embarrassing, and she felt that she wouldn’t be taken as seriously as a detective if she openly let her feelings get to her like that.
Despite the fact that Keiko had been trying hard to hide her feelings, L’s sudden look in her direction told her that he knew exactly what she had been freaking out about. She shifted a little under his intense gaze.
I suppose I shouldn’t be that surprised that he knows...after all, nothing gets past him…
Much to Keiko’s relief, the raven haired detective didn’t comment on her emotional state. Instead, he turned his attention back to Light’s father.
Keiko watched as he hit the chief’s speakerphone, “Yagami-san…”
“What is it? Is it good news?!” Soichiro Yagami demanded. He gave a wild look into the surveillance camera, “or...perhaps, is it bad news?! You can tell me, I swear I can handle it!”
“Oh, chief…” Keiko heard Matsuda murmur quietly behind her. There was also a soft sigh from Aizawa.
It was quite clear to everyone at Task Force headquarters that he, in fact, couldn’t handle it.
“There’s no news, Yagami-san. That’s not why I wanted to talk to you,” L replied.
“T-then why?!” Mr. Yagami fiercely questioned.
“I wanted to tell you not to worry so much,” L said simply, “it doesn’t matter how much time you devote to worrying about this; the outcome will still be the same. That being said, this could go on for quite some time...perhaps you should rest in a more comfortable place.”
“Impossible!” The chief almost shouted. He stood up so fast that his chair nearly tipped over behind him. He stared straight into the camera with a scarily determined look,  “what makes you think I care where I am?! It doesn’t matter to me because, like you said, it won’t change anything! Mark my words, no matter how much time it takes, no matter what the result is, when I leave here...it’s going to be with my son!”
L closed his eyes a moment and took a deep breath, “I understand, Yagami-san...however, if at any point you change your mind and want to be let out, Watari-san and I are more than willing to offer you a room here at Task Force headquarters. Of course, you would still be monitored and you wouldn’t be allowed to leave, but it would be more comfortable than your current space.”
Mr. Yagami’s face softened a little, “thank you, Ryuzaki-san...but given the state I’m in, and how much of a reaction I just had, I think it’s best that I remain here…”
“I understand,” L replied once more. He turned off the microphone and Keiko eyed him as he brought his thumb up to his mouth.
Why did he offer Light’s father a more comfortable accommodation in the first place? Surely he knew that the chief would decline his offer. Did he just do it to ease his conscious? On second thought, does he even have a conscience? Sometimes I truly wonder what goes on in that mind of his...
/timeskip/
L’s POV:
The time was nearing eleven o'clock, meaning that it had gotten rather late. Unfortunately, there were still no new leads in the investigation. Misa was still convinced that she had been kidnapped by a stalker and Light had barely moved a muscle. He was still sitting at the foot of his dingy bed, staring at the floor of his cell.
L was rather bored because of all of the inactivity. His dark eyes drifted over towards where Keiko was standing in front of the coffee machine in the corner of the room. She was watching the coffee as it dripped down into the little pot below with a certain eagerness.
The detective had sensed her weariness when she had been sitting next to him earlier, so it was no surprise that she needed the little boost. Keiko lifted up the coffee pot as soon as the dripping slowed to a halt, pouring it into one of the empty mugs sitting on the coffee table. Afterwards, as he predicted, she poured in an obscene amount of caramel creamer into the mug. She then stirred it to perfection.
L watched as she raised the mug up to her lips and took a rather large sip. The corners of his lips curved upwards.
Heh…how interesting.
By now it was no surprise to him what her preferences were when it came to the caffeinated drink. She didn’t like to add in pure sugar like he did, but adding in huge amounts of coffee creamer was apparently no issue.
However, it’s the same thing, just in a different form...
He watched as Matsuda walked over to where Keiko was standing by the coffee machine. L could see the start of dark circles forming under his eyes. The young policeman looked just as tired as she was.
“Would you mind pouring me some coffee as well, please?” Matsuda asked her, gesturing over towards the coffee machine beside her.
Surely he can get his own coffee...why make Keiko do it? I know she’s standing closest to the machine, but she was just about to move anyway.
“Oh. Sure, Matsuda-san,” Keiko replied, setting down her coffee mug. She then grabbed an empty mug from the table.
L watched as the young policeman gave Keiko a soft smile, “thank you, Keiko-chan.”
She filled the mug up to the top with the fresh coffee, “it’s really no problem. Do you want any milk or creamer?”
“Oh I can do that part myself,” Matsuda responded, taking the mug from Keiko’s hands and stirring in some milk.
“A-alright,” Keiko grabbed her mug once more. She looked like she was about to walk away, so L assumed that Keiko’s little interaction with Matsuda was over.
Finally.
The detective was about to turn back around to watch the surveillance cameras again when he heard Matsuda speak up once more. L paused, glancing back over in their direction.
“Uh, K-Keiko-chan...wait a moment…” Matsuda murmured. His voice was quiet at first, uncertain.
What could he possibly want from her now? Does he intend to try and cheer her up somehow? Knowing Matsuda, that’s probably it. He, too, doubts that Light is guilty after all...but is it truly necessary?
L watched as Keiko turned back around to direct her attention towards him again. He could see the question written in her eyes, “hmm? What is it, Matsuda-san?
“I was thinking…and…well…I just wanted to say...” he suddenly trailed off, glancing at the floor of the hotel room a moment. It was as though he was fishing for the right way to finish up his sentence. A few seconds later, he met Keiko’s gaze once more, “well...to be blunt, I’m glad L never found reason to suspect you of being Kira or the Second Kira.”
Keiko’s eyebrows shot up. It was clear that Matsuda’s sudden confession had thrown her off. L watched as she swallowed uncomfortably, “I, uh-”
Matsuda interrupted her before she could respond, his face was flushing, “oh...I hope you don’t take that in a bad way...I just mean, it’s, uh, unfortunate how Light’s under suspicion right now, and I’m glad that you don’t have to go through what he’s going through.”
“O-oh...uh, yeah. R-right…that’s, uh, that’s good,” Keiko stuttered out. L could tell that she honestly didn’t know how to properly respond to him.
“Y-yeah...” Matsuda nodded running a hand through his messy, dark hair earnestly, “well, that’s all I wanted to say…”
Hmm…leave it to Matsuda to make things awkward. How he manages to be so irritating is beyond me. Of course he means well, but he has the oddest way of going about things, and his stating the obvious is a bit too much.
L was done listening in, he had heard enough mindless chatter. He swiveled his chair back around so that he was facing the surveillance feeds. It appeared that Keiko was done as well because, out of the corner of his eye, he saw her settling into her spot right next to him once more.
He glanced over at her, keeping his face unreadable, despite the annoyance he was feeling at watching her little interaction with Matsuda moments ago. She set her mug of coffee down on a coaster. Keiko absentmindedly brushed a strand of hair away from her face and studied the surveillance feed. Her gaze lingered on her ex-boyfriend, and L had no doubt that she was feeling torn once again.
Even though he had stated the obvious, Matsuda had still been right earlier, there was no way that Keiko was Kira or the Second Kira. Her emotions were way too easy to read. If she were Kira or the Second Kira, she would have revealed herself long ago. Her face would have given it away if she were guilty, so L knew without a doubt that she was innocent.
On the other hand, both Light Yagami and Misa Amane were far from innocent. L was determined to prove that fact. It helped that all of the evidence gathered so far pointed to both of them. There was also no way that their meeting that day on the street was just a mere coincidence. He was certain that Light and Misa had planned things out so that Keiko wouldn’t be suspicious.
L also knew that Light had to have told Misa to befriend Keiko, despite the fact that the two of them had nothing in common. After all, Keiko and Misa were pretty much polar opposites; one was an outspoken, blonde haired bombshell and the other a soft-spoken, burnette honor student. He deduced that there was no other explanation for their sudden friendship, meaning that Light had told Misa to take advantage of Keiko’s kindness.
Keiko’s kindness was her major downfall, it made her soft. Not only that, but her love for Light Yagami had made her blind. Her love had made her trust Light despite the detective’s warnings, despite the fact that all evidence pointed to him as being Kira. It had also made her trust Misa Amane, who was most likely the Second Kira.
Intelligence almost means nothing if one only runs on emotions. Emotions only make people weak, and weak people only let others walk all over them...that being said, it’s such a waste that Keiko was so hung up on Light Yagami, L thought, taking a bite of his strawberry cake. He studied the girl, watching as she bit her lip, staring straight at her ex-boyfriend on the surveillance feed.
No...actually, it’s a waste that, after all of this time, she’s still hung up over him. Keiko might not want to admit it, but the longer we go without news of a new heart attack victim, the worse she looks…
L watched as Keiko slightly shifted in her seat and took a sip of her coffee.
While it’s frustrating watching her like this, it’s also sort of funny in a way...she can accept that Light possibly cheated on her one day and break up with him, but she still can’t accept that all signs point to him as being Kira, even though we’ve had evidence of that for months. The bottom line is, it’s obviously hard for her to accept the fact that Light Yagami is Kira. However, if she wants to stay working on this investigation, she has to. After all, if things continue like this then it’s only a matter of time until we will be able to properly convict Light. I wonder if there’s any way she could get over him sooner?
Day 7 of Surveillance
Keiko’s POV:
Keiko could yet again feel L’s watchful gaze and she gave a feeble attempt at making her face unreadable. She noticed that he had been keeping a frequent eye on her the last few days. There was no doubt in her mind that the detective was trying to get inside her head, to see what exactly she was thinking and feeling about the Kira investigation. Or, more specifically, to see what she was thinking and  feeling about Light Yagami.
While it had made her uneasy, she had been able to somewhat brush it off before. However now, with it having been a full week without any new Kira victims, it was much harder for her to ignore his watchful eyes, especially because they were currently the only ones at Task Force headquarters.
Keiko swallowed hard. She had been trying hard to stay silent, to disregard the young detective, but she was growing tired of him trying, and succeeding, at reading her. It was becoming too much for her to handle.
She finally gave into her urge and questioned the raven haired detective sitting beside her, “Ryuzaki-san, is it really necessary for you to constantly keep an eye on me? What, am I also now a suspect in this investigation? You of all people must know that I’m not capable of being a mass murderer.”
Keiko watched as L’s lips curved into a smirk, “I am well aware of your innocence. It’s just...well...as I said before, Kagami-san, you’re quite an interesting person. I daresay...it’s rather fun keeping an you.”
She fought an urge to roll her eyes, “why? You like watching me slowly realize that there’s a high probability that my ex-boyfriend is Kira?”
“Well, you said it, not me,” the great detective responded, “however, you’re right; I do. I told you from the very beginning that Light Yagami was suspected of being Kira, but it appears that once you fell for him, you forgot that fact. You were so blinded by love that you basically ignored all of my little warnings and reminders...sure, you were cautious for a little while afterwards, but then you’d start to slip right into Light’s hands once more. A lovestruck girl...it was almost too hard for me to watch.”
Keiko gave a soft sigh. While she disliked his harsh way of explaining things, she knew she couldn't argue with him. She knew that he was right, if Light Yagami was really Kira, then she had fallen right into his trap multiple times. The thought left her feeling severely unsettled on the inside.
The evidence was just stacked way too high against Light Yagami. It didn’t help that it had now been a week since Kira’s last victim. Of course, Kira had taken short breaks between his killing sprees before, but if this was just a break, then it was at an exceedingly horrible time. However, she still held a small hope that Light was innocent, a hope that was constantly getting crushed every single day that Kira wasn’t killing new criminals.
Seeing Keiko’s response, L continued on, “of course, I have to give you some credit...after all, you finally ended your relationship with him, a wise choice on your end. It’s unfortunate that you had to experience the heartbreak of watching Light and Misa kiss first though...and, as I recall, it’s not the first time you’ve had a boyfriend cheat on you…”
Keiko froze at the detective’s sudden mention of Daicho, it was like an arrow going straight through her heart. L knew just how to push her buttons, he knew just how to upset her. However, once again, he was right, she had been fooled not only once but twice.
“They say that history repeats itself...” L looked her straight in the eyes, “and they’re right... you’re living proof of that. You’re rather smart, but...ass I said before, despite how cautious you might think you are, you’re naive. I always knew you were naive, that’s why I tried to warn you. But...you’re blind when you’re in love, you let your emotions cloud your judgement. That being said, you don’t see the facts...or, perhaps, you see the facts but choose to ignore them, because the truth hurts. Well, Keiko-chan, the truth may hurt but the truth always has a way of coming out in the end...and right now, the truth is Light cheated on you with Misa, and...that there’s now a 90% chance he’s Kira. There’s a quote, ‘the more trustworthy someone is, the more they have to lose’, well, Keiko-chan, it appears that you’ve lost.”
Keiko could feel the blood rushing to her face. She wasn’t quite sure how she was feeling, but she knew she didn’t like it very much. There were multiple knots in her stomach, and she could feel her heart pumping faster in her chest.
“I know that the truth is hard to handle, Kagami-san,” L replied, “but it’s better to face the truth sooner rather than later. That way, one can avoid getting hurt.”
Keiko couldn’t stop herself from snorting at L’s words.
Avoid getting hurt? No matter what, there was no way I could have avoided getting hurt in this situation. He’s just making fun of me now! Or at least that’s what it feels like...he’s always so blunt, sometimes it’s hard to tell...
The sound of the detective speaking once more broke her away from her thoughts, “if you’re upset with me again, that’s fine. I can live with that. As a reminder, you’re free to come and go as you please. That means there’s nothing stopping you from leaving if this investigation’s getting too much for you to handle…”
Keiko narrowed her eyes at him.
“Leave?” she bitterly spat, “you of all people should know that I have no intention of leaving, not until the investigation is over, once and for all…”
“Oh, Kagami-san,” the detective gave a soft chuckle.
He then leaned in closer towards Keiko. She could feel the warmth emitting from his body as he spoke, “if you have no intention of leaving, then face the truth; Light Yagami is Kira, and he’s been stringing you along all this time.”
With that, L leaned back into his original position, leaving Keiko momentarily frozen. He had said that multiple times before, but this particular time, under these particular circumstances, it had the most effect on her. The first few times he had said it, it had been easy to wave away and deny, but now after days of surveillance with no new killings, it was hard to ignore the obvious.
However, it was a hard truth for Keiko to swallow.

Unexpected Consequences Chapter 1
They were so close! Light and L had almost caught Kira. Light could finally show L that he wasn’t Kira, that he couldn’t be Kira! Light smiled, feeling as though a weight were coming off of his chest. Maybe now he and L could be friends. Without the looming accusations from L saying he was Kira.
L had seemed hesitant these past few days, the evidence he had gathered seeming to fall away as more evidence pointed towards another person besides Light. Though that certainly didn’t stop L from continuously reminding the frustrated genius that he still believed Light was Kira. It was a miracle no one had ever killed him, if he treated everyone like that.
Of course, a wrench had to be thrown into everything when Light’s father started screaming after picking up a little black book that Kyosuke Higuchi had dropped. This led to a game of ‘pass the mysterious book around to see what scared Chief Yagami’. L had just been passed the book, a look of wonder flitting across his face.
Light was insatiably curious.
“Pass it to me,” he called to L. The detective glanced over at Light, seeming to think on this decision. He nodded as if to affirm he would hand over the book- and yet he didn’t make an effort to hand it over. Light held out his hand expectantly. He wanted to know and the detective had no valid reason to keep anything from him now.
What happened after was a blur for Light Yagami.
Of course, he knew what happened. His mind did not allow him to forget those memories. He just felt as though they weren’t his own. After all, how could he trust himself on what he witnessed? What he had seen could not have been possible; impossible things seemed to happen quite frequently these days.
It started as background noise. Not something either L or Light could hear over the sound of the helicopter’s blades whirring above them. They could barely hear each other. Even if the helicopter blades had not been moving, the sirens from the cop cars would have covered the sound anyways. Besides that, screams were not uncommon in the city. Chatter from the populace was expected. That’s what everyone believed.
Of course, they weren’t just screams. People started running past the cop cars, clearly not caring for the section they had blocked off. Some ran up to the police and begged for help. None of them were making enough sense for the officers to figure out why they needed help. Everyone knew this must be serious- people don’t all run en masse for fun. The little black book fell to the back of Light’s mind.
More and more people seemed to rush past. People ran and screamed, yelling for those they knew. It set everyone on edge. Even L had tensed up, narrowing his eyes at the still oncoming crowd. There was a lull for a moment. That moment was filled with silence. If anything it made L and Light even more suspicious.
Then the monsters started to pour in. Light knew that wasn’t the term that would be best used to describe them, not by a long shot. Yet his mind could not pull out another word. They looked like people from afar but it was quite clear they were not. Their skin seemed to be pale, almost ashy. Skin was peeling off from various parts of their bodies. Jaws hung open as though they had no control over their muscles. If Light was honest with himself, they probably didn’t.
The thing that no one else noticed, on exception of L, was the identity of the man. It would not have been too peculiar- drugs could make people do horrible things. Drugs could make people age prematurely and start to disfigure. Drugs could not, however, bring people back from the dead. For what the two geniuses noticed was that the man was one of Kira’s first victims. He had been dead for around eleven months.
He wasn’t the only one however. Hoards of them started to appear: all moving at different paces. Some were limping, some were running at full speed. Ligh could feel his hear his heartbeat now. It seemed to be beating faster, stronger than ever. That first monster proceeded to rip into a police officer’s throat.
The officers seemed to understand the danger now. They were barking orders, rushing to evacuate. They had the sense to at least try and run rather than fight whatever monstrosity was heading their way. Light’s ears were ringing. He heard L shouting orders to get their helicopter into the air. He noticed how L dropped the little black book in his haste. The time it took for the helicopter to reach the air seemed like forever.
L was not unaffected either. His breath was erratic and he could feel himself start to sweat. Fortunately for him, he was more used to dangerous situations and horrific scenes than most people. The same could not be said for Light Yagami. Though he had seen pictures, the young genius had never faced it on his own. Not really. L sent glances towards Light every so often as they flew back to the special facility he had built.
Light was trying to even his breaths now, using meditation as a way to try and calm himself down. Panicking now would not help. He had to keep a clear mind in this situation. The helicopter had been traveling for a while, both passengers in complete silence. L turned to Light quickly.
“Is Light-kun alright now?” Normally Light would have been annoyed with L’s unusual phrasing, but he couldn’t bring himself to care this time. There was also L’s tone to consider, which was a much kinder and more serious tone than what he had expected. He nodded.
“I’m fine. I’ll be fine.” He responded in a quiet voice. L cocked his head to the side.
“You are fine, or you will be fine?” Light huffed. Leave it to L to bring up an inconsistency.
“I am fine. I’m fine L.” His voice sounded hoarse, the statement coming off as false even to Light. It was obvious that he was still shaken.
“I’m not inclined to believe you.” L said, gnawing on his thumb. “Not that it it isn’t completely understandable. I’m not quite sure what happened myself, but I can assuredly say one would not come out of an experience like that without fear.”
“I am fine! Nothing is wrong!” The words sounded forced, and both L and Light knew it. Light felt as though something was stuck in the back of his throat. He swallowed thickly before turning to look at L. “What are we going to do?”
“I am not quite sure. We do not know the situation as of yet Light-kun, it would be foolish to assume and do something rash.”
“I think you and I both can guess what’s happening.” L sucked in a breath. Of course they knew. It was just impossible.
“Light-kun, we must not panic. We don’t know if it is widespread, or what they do. You know this. Once we reach the Taskforce Headquarters, we can come up with a plan.” Both were silent after that.
It didn’t take long for the helicopter to reach the landing pad at the top of the building. L was out of the helicopter immediately, walking purposely towards the entrance to the building. Light was much slower. He didn’t much want to leave the helicopter, nor did he want to face his fear. In the helicopter he could continue to pretend as if nothing had happened.
Apparently Light had been sitting there for longer than expected because L was now lightly shaking his shoulder.
“Light? Light are you okay?” L’s voice was laced with concern, which was unusual. Light blinked a few times and turned to L.
“Yeah. Sorry.” He exited the helicopter sluggishly. L didn’t look convinced, but dropped the subject.
“The building is clear. We can stay here for a while and see what is happening.” Light nodded and allowed L to guide him into the building. What was wrong with him? He was out of it in a way he had never experienced. Why?
Light didn’t remember walking down the stairs, passing through the main work area, or even going to the floor in which he and L had stayed for the past months. He didn’t notice L talking quietly to Watari, or when L gently pushed him into a chair with a look of worry written across his face. He didn’t notice much of anything.

12 Beloved Anime Characters Who Are Actually Terrible People
var h12precont = 'h12c_300x250_' + Math.floor(Math.random()*1000000); document.write('
'); (h12_adarray = window.h12_adarray || []).push({"adcontainer":h12precont,"placement":"c9d6b99f00114c5a436a0f497c7bb182","size":"300x250","type":"standard","width":"300","height":"250","name":""});
Anime followers don’t completely love characters who’re good individuals. In truth, there are a ton of beloved anime characters who’re dangerous individuals. This doesn’t imply that they’re dangerous characters – a few of them are among the many finest anime characters ever created. What it does imply is that they’ve finished some significantly tousled issues.
Generally, it may be irritating when different followers love a personality whose dangerous conduct makes you cringe. That is most typical when individuals let the character’s dangerous traits slide, and have fun the character as in the event that they’re some form of saint – if you happen to have been grossed out by Miroku’s wandering palms, you in all probability aren’t tremendous thrilled concerning the Inuyasha fandom’s fondness for him. At different occasions, it’s the character’s motivation that makes them fascinating – Revy from Black Lagoon could also be a vicious mercenary, however the causes for her dangerous conduct really make numerous sense. Viewers may additionally delight within the badness itself – watching Hisoka do his factor is among the most enjoyable elements of H X H.
Jiraiya Is An Irresponsible Pervert In ‘Naruto’
Tumblr media
Jiraiya is among the most beloved characters within the Naruto franchise. Has Vegeta modified? If anybody on Planet Arlia survived his blasting it to bits, they might in all probability not care very a lot about that query. Neither would his former comrade Nappa who he eradicated for mainly no motive – if he have been nonetheless alive to have an opinion. The children get so ravenous and harassed about it that within the early days of the orphanage one among them takes his personal life and one other begins taking different individuals’s. Watari has L working across the clock beginning at age eight – it’s apparent that L has by no means had something resembling a standard childhood and has change into an emotionally maladjusted grownup who survives on cake and never sleeping.  Additionally, whereas it’s not confirmed that the unorthodox strategies of getting data that L makes use of are Watari’s thought, he has no objection in any respect to serving to him.

His utter incapacity to care about anybody moreover himself is oddly form of refreshing, and his clown aesthetic is by turns terrifying and pleasant.
Accelerator Has A Physique Rely Of 20,000 In ‘A Sure Magical Index’
Tumblr media

In truth, he takes out 20,000 individuals in an try and show his energy. His backstory is a tragic one – due to his excessive energy, he’s endured painful experimentation that led him to the conclusion that being the strongest is the one approach to hold himself secure, and the one approach to intimidate others into leaving him alone in order that he doesn’t hurt them.

A few of that is excusable, however he takes issues too far in a method that makes him look like a significantly terrible dude.
When Miaka’s boyfriend Tamahome is brainwashed into attacking her, Miaka is past devastated. Reasonably than giving the younger woman house to kind out her emotions and even providing actual consolation pertaining to her loss, Hotohori swoops in to ask her to be with him as an alternative. His crush on her is seemingly a method greater deal than the truth that somebody she loves simply attacked her. Miroku Is The Dangerous Variety Of Pervert In ‘Inuyasha’
Tumblr media

Miroku is the latter sort.
He has a particularly good motive for eager to have youngsters, because it’s the one approach to do away with a curse that would take his life, however there are many methods to have children that don’t contain continuously grabbing each lady he encounters irrespective of how a lot they could protest. Nevertheless, the explanation that folks like Revy isn’t as a result of she’s a kind-hearted soul. Reasonably, she’s a sadistic mercenary who will fortunately remove actually anybody who will get in her method. Why is Revy like this? As a result of she doesn’t belief anybody however herself, and appears like the one approach to keep secure is to be completely ruthless. She’s skilled excessive mistreatment by the hands of everybody from her father to the NYPD. Whereas her hard-hearted methods are comprehensible – even sympathetic – they don’t make the individuals she’s gone after any extra alive.
Hozuki Is Effortlessly Violent In ‘Hozuki No Reitetsu’
Tumblr media
As a minion of Hell, Hozuki is 100% inside his rights to be a horrible particular person. He completely is – and that’s precisely why viewers love him. welcome to death note, where the plot makes no sense and the rules don’t matter
Unless you've been living under a rock the past few months, you're aware that there's a live-action American Death Note movie on Netflix.
I wasn't going to watch it because I knew it would be bad and I am a MASSIVE DN fan. I didn't want it to ruin one of my favourite things.
While I wouldn't say it did that, I will say that it was, without exaggeration, the worst screen adaptation of anything I've ever seen.
I went in with low expectations and knowing they'd have to change the plot around to fit into 90 minutes. The bar was so low and yet they managed to disappoint me at every turn.
So let's get into the details. Spoilers ahead, but who cares this movie is garbage.
I'll break it down into several aspects: acting and characterization, pacing and plot, visuals and sound, and finally, the sheer amount of nonsense and bullshit this film vomited into my face.
Okay. I hated every single character's personality. NONE of the characters were even remotely similar to the characters in the manga/anime. Light is a stupid, naive teenager who thinks with his dick. Mi(s)a is a sociopathic, manipulative cunt, Light's father is EXTREMELY stupid, Ryuk is not a neutral character (which is extremely important), and, finally, L. Oh, lord, L.
L is a cold, detached, calculating super genius detective. In the original. In the movie, he's a ballsy, irrational, emotional mess who somehow knows how to drive and wield a gun - unthinkable of OG L.
And to touch briefly on the acting: Nat Wolff is the only one I really have a problem with. He wears a constant look of confusion the whole movie and acts like a troubled child, not like a fucking serial killer.
Now, to your immense surprise, there is one character that I found was nearly spot-on: Watari.
And finally, the movie lacked in sheer number of characters. The ones I listed are, quite literally, the only ones in the film who speak. I get it, they didn't have time to do the Near, Mello, Takada, or Mikami plots. But I guarentee this movie would've greatly benefited from a Matsuda character, a Rem character, and Light's mother and sister.
Onto pacing and plot.
Again, I know they only had 90 minutes, but within the first ten minutes, Light has the notebook and hooks up with someone he barely knows (Mia), shows her the notebook, and they’re instantly dating and having some creepy murder sex. Within the first 30 minutes, nearly everyone knows Light is Kira.
Now to the main problems with the plot itself: there is no reason to give Light more motive to become a killer. It's his personality and his worldly outlook that causes him to take up killing. In the movie, they sloppily throw in some bullshit about his mom being killed, but they don't make that the actual motivation for killing. How do we know this? Well...
In the movie, his first kill is a bully at school (something OG Light was smart enough to realize is fucking stupid) and when told to add a cause of death, he immediately jumps to "decapitation" - revealing instantly that he's a sick fuck. Sure, bullies suck, but do they deserve to be fucking decapitated? Light Yagami only killed actual criminals (until he has to kill people investigating him).
This might seem petty, but it's actually super important: Ryuk shows up before Light kills anyone. In the original, Light needed no prodding from a Death God to begin his murder spree. In the movie, it's Ryuk that goads him into his quest. This goes back to the fact that Ryuk is supposed to be neutral. It takes away Light's agency and makes it feel like Ryuk is controlling him.
L makes WAY too many guesses with little logic or evidence. It takes a lot longer for L to deduce Light is Kira in the original. Movie L makes some very uncharacteristic leaps of logic just for the sake of driving the movie on.
There's a scene pretty early on that mimics a similar scene in the original with Light and L sitting in a diner together. In the original, it’s not super important. Movie version involved L outright accusing him of being Kira on flimsy-at-best evidence, and then, in what might be the worst event in the movie, Light readily admits to being Kira and taunts him about not knowing how he kills.
After some bullshit about Light mind-controlling Watari (more on that later) to try and get L's name and Watari dies, L goes on a destructive car/foot chase with Light. In the original, it's important for L to figure out how Kira kills before killing him. This movie L doesn't seem to care about anything but revenge and being proven right.
I keep saying this, but another horribly-written thing happens that might be the worst part: L has Light cornered with a gun on him and someone randomly comes and knocks L over the back of the head, the very epitome of a Deus Ex Machina.
Then we get to the climax, which is an extremely long scene where Light and Mia hijack the Seattle ferris wheel, take it to the top and fight over who should own the book. They've both written each others' names down and the pages need to be burned by midnight if they want to live (groan, unnecessary race-against-time). They spend a good 5 minutes dangling from the wheel when RYUK causes it to collapse; something OG Ryuk would have NEVER EVER DONE, because, as the movie fails to explain, Ryuk’s motivation is supposed to be boredom. I’ll touch more on why this happens in a bit. Mia falls to her death, Light falls into the water, into a coma, and wakes up two days later.
Okay, now I do have to give the movie a bit of credit here: it seems at first like a bunch of ridiculous coincidences that lead to Light outliving Mia. Turns out he saw all this coming (somehow) and had quickly used the book to ensure that: the wheel collapses, Mia falls from the wheel and dies, the page with his name is burned so he will live, that he's rescued from the water after his fall, that he's in a coma but murders continue via a random criminal writing in the book before delivering it back to Light just as he wakes from the coma. I'll pick this part apart in a minute because there is just so much wrong with this sequence of events that I can’t even.
And finally, the ending, if you can call it that. The writers were VERY clearly trying to be clever and leave us with a cliffhanger.
L is "proven wrong" about Light being Kira because the murders continued while he was in a coma, and is supposed to go back to Japan, before he suddenly remembers that Mia has a page of the book at her house. He gets there and finds the page she used to kill invesigators behind Light's back. The movie ends with L, shaking in uncharacteristic anger, about to write Light's name. Fade to black.
Finally, one last thought on the plot before I touch on other elements: this is a terrible adaptation, but an even worse movie. As a stand-alone movie, viewers new to Death Note would no doubtedly leave feeling confused and like nothing important was said in the movie. It does nothing to touch on the ambiguity of Kira's actions vs. L's. It has no underlying takeaway besides "Hey look at this cool book!"
Okay, quick thoughts on visuals and sound. Visuals are great (minus whatever bullshit paper mache project that is Ryuk). They dont' shy away from gruesome depictions of murders. I'd cite the incredible series of events that lead to Kenny being decapitated as the best example.
Hated the audio. Random songs start playing where score would've been better.
Okay, now onto the nitty-gritty details that make this movie absolutely fall apart.
Most of them are to do with the mechanics of how the Death Note is supposed to work. The original only has one page of rules and no names in it yet. Movie Book has pages and pages of rules and names filled in. There are rules that don't exist in the original (like the burning of the page to save the life of the victim, the fact that Mia can't see Ryuk after touching the note*, and most deplorably, the rule about "must be physically possible" being shattered into pieces at every turn.
*When Light first shows Mia the book and has her touch it, he assumes she’ll be able to see Ryuk WITH NO REASON TO BELIEVE THIS. In the original, Ryuk has to tell Light about this rule. In the movie, Light GUESSES that that’s how it works. And he’s wrong: unlike the original where Mia would’ve seen Ryuk, Ryuk claims in the movie that only the owner of the book can see him - super convenient for Light, who walks around school with the book in full view.
But there's a lot of other bullshit that ruins this monstrosity. There's a turning point in the movie where Mia tries to convince Light to kill his own father. The prompting event doesn't happen in the original, but I have no doubt that OG Light would've killed him without hesitation, as he outright says in the original. Because OG Light would be smart enough to know that leaving his father alive in that situation would immediately implicate him.
Here's one of the worst offenses (again, I know): Light writes the name "Watari" in the book. And it works. Watari is not his real name, and even if it were, who only has one name?
L does the whole "taunting Kira to kill him on TV" as in the original, but this event leads him to the conclusion that Light needs a name and a face - something that makes absolutely no sense for him to instantly know after one test.
Now, about the ending sequence at the ferris wheel and the hospital. The police are chasing Light and Mia, the two threaten the wheel's operator with a gun to take them up. And then he's later "officially" exonerated because the murders continued while he was in a coma, but because Light killed his mother's killer, his father "knows” he's Kira, which, of course, Light admits. If he's "officially" not Kira, why did he run from the cops and hijack a ferris wheel? L knows the power of killing can be transferred to another, yet doesn't explain this fact to anyone when the killings continue during Light’s coma.
And the biggest shitshow of nonsense? The way Light kills Mia and ensures he lives and ends up with the book again. Waaay too much of it is contingent on luck, along with some great rule-breaking.
Light writes: Mia takes the book, the wheel collapses, she falls to her demise, and the page with his name on it is burned. That's not how it works. There cannot be a passive action in a Death Note murder. He would've had to write: Mia takes the book, burns Light's page, then falls to her demise.
He also writes that he himself falls but goes into a coma, set to wake up in two days. Also impossible. You can't create a sequence of events that affect someone other than the murder victim. And you especially can’t use it to (directly) save someone’s life.
Essentially, Light is writing things he'd like to happen in the book. It's a Death Note, not a Life Note, and certainly not a Wish Note.
He also writes that criminal number one retrieves him from the water and revives him. The criminal would have to know there's a kid in the water, where he is, and how to revive him. Possible, but not foolproof because of the "physically possible" rule. If dude didn't know CPR, Light would've died.
Then, he has criminal number two retrieve the Death Note and continue writing names in the book for the two days he's in the coma, and then return it to him in the hospital. This is less about "physically possible" and more about somehow being able to brainwash him. The events leading up to his death have to be something he could conceiveably do on his own. See also: the brainwashing of Watari.
Let me explain a bit more: in the original, Light experiments with the "physically possible" rule. In one test he writes: (criminal) draws a perfect likeness of L's face on his prison wall before dying. This isn't physically possible because the criminal doesn't know what L looks like, so it's inconcievable that he could, under any circumstance, draw L's face.
Similarly, there's no way that Watari would think of going back to the orphanage to get L's real name, nor is there a conceivable way that a criminal would think to go to Light's specific hospital room and leave him the book. It has to be something they could potentially think of themselves.
Now, I know these are a lot of extremely fine details, but to people who know how the book is supposed to work, it all looks messy and contrived.
Finally, let me leave you with one last gripe/thought. Death Note is an IP originating from Japan. I get that it's a purposely American adaptation meant for American audiences, but something in the movie happens that kind of pissed me off:
Light chooses the name Kira (instead of his fans choosing the name) largely because it means "killer" in Japan, then decides to try and throw people off his scent by focusing his murders in Japan. I have no doubt that this was meant to be a nod to its Japanese origins, but it comes off as... kind of like kicking the original when it's already down. You're taking a Japanese IP, taking it to America, then using Japan as a scapegoat for American Light. Maybe it's just me, but it really made me think, "Haven't they suffered enough just by the fact that this movie exists?"
I'm sure there's a bunch of stuff I've missed due to repressing the memory of ever seeing this terrible movie, but those are my major (and minor) problems with it.
Don't see it. It's bad.
And DEAR GOD, PLEASE DON'T MAKE A SEQUEL.
Stay Greater.

Title: a lie to a liar to a lie
Name of Creator: just-another-shipper
Created For: mrskandycane
Prompt: For one day, Light can only tell lies, and L tries to use this.
Characters: L and Light
Ratings, warnings, number of words: PG-13 rating, no warnings, 1,510 words
a lie to a liar to a lie
For Light Yagami, the truth had been something hanging over his head just as much as the silver handcuff glinting on his wrist. The truth was something he had been running from his whole life and the truth was something that he had conquered a long time ago.
After all, the truth is different things to different people, and when you think about it that way, what’s truth but one more lie?
Of course, there are objective truths, like the color of the sky, crime, the way it feels to try and try for your father’s approval only for him to not notice again and again and again. The loneliness of always being above your peers, of never having an equal.
Light Yagami had been lying his entire life and that’s why, on the day that he could not tell the truth, he didn’t even realize anything was wrong until halfway through the morning when he accidentally agreed with L’s ridiculous thoughts on why ice cream was a proper breakfast. He had managed to play it off as a joke, but there was no avoiding L’s blank stare that still somehow managed to make Light feel as though L saw right through his forced nonchalance and right into the heart of his increasing anxiety.
Trying to test this new snarl in his life proved difficult with a genius detective, who was looking for a way to lock him up, forever handcuffed to him. Every time that Light found he was unable to tell the truth, L would look at him and whisper an increasing percentage in his ear.
Of course, this was horribly infuriating and, of course, there was nothing Light could do about it.
By lunch, despite having to perform his tests with L next to him, he was able to determine that he was unable to tell the truth at all. For a career liar like Light, this wasn’t as worrying as it should be.
What was worrying was that he was still able to proclaim his innocence in the face of L’s accusations.
-
If you were to ask any honest man what the opposite of the truth was, they would all say that it was a lie, but an ardent liar would laugh in the face of that common knowledge because all liars know that any great lie starts as the truth.
-
Light’s thoughts were racing. He needed to get away from L and figure out why he was able to deny his guilt.
The part of his mind that still believed that the truth existed was whispering because you are Kira, you are guilty, a Killer. But Light has been denying the existence of that voice for so long that it was barely there at all. There was no way that he was Kira, therefore, there had to be another reason that he was able to lie about it.
Light’s thoughts raced around in his head until finally L noticed a crack in his flawless façade and said, his sickly sweet breath washing over Light’s face, “Light-kun seems distracted, is something the matter?”
It was a warning and a barb all at once, it said I see you now, your face is slipping, watch out in a wrapping of friendly concern. Light was fuming.
“I think I’m just feeling a little under the weather today, Ryuzaki, thanks for your concern.”
Before L could speak again, one of the other, inconsequential officers that were in the room with them started shouting about finding a clue that both L and Light had already found and dismissed as a dead end a few hours ago. Light hated them for robbing him of the opportunity to continue this dance he and L were performing alone and unrecognized only because no one else was smart enough to realize that they were dancing in the first place.
-
One night, not long after his father pointed an empty gun at his head and pulled the trigger, Light and L found themselves on the roof of the building after everyone but Watari had left for the night.
In the moonlight and against the backdrop of the city behind him, L was a dangerous mirage. His grotesque angles and sickly pale skin turned into a thing of beauty in the dark. He had been entirely silent, his entire being focused on the problem that was Light.
And Light, still hurt and angry over his father’s fabricated betrayal, had practically preened at the attention from someone who saw more of his truth than anyone had ever seen and he was practically shaking with rage because of it.
What right did this monster of a man have to see Light-perfect, perfect Light-without his mask?
What right did L have to strip away the fabricated truths that Light wore like a second skin?
That night they had argued with subtle barbs and targeted words and then they fell into bed and created a new variation of the same game they had been playing for what had felt like months.
It was exhilarating.
-
The taskforce left around dinnertime and Light and L were left to eat a dinner of a salad and a mountain of cookies alone.
Dinner was by no means a truce, but it was a time when both of them stopped thinking about the Kira case and let their minds and mouths wander from topic to topic, only lingering on something long enough to argue a point with words that weren’t meant to sting as sharply. Unlike the day and night, evening was a time for play fighting. Evening was the perfect balance between the lie of the day and the truth of the night. Light liked evenings.
That night, the topic eventually landed on Misa.
Misa was an impossible contradiction that Light was never sure what to do with and was never sure why he still tolerated her.
She was at once a liar and one of the most honest people that Light knew. She was always observant, but purposely oblivious. Obsessive and selfish, but happy to sacrifice anything for him. She was the type of person that Light usually abhorred, but there was something that forced Light to pay attention to her in a way that he didn’t for anyone but L.
Love and hate are words that Light thought he could say anytime, because love and hate are nothing but contradictions and lies. But even those lies can be true if you believe them long and hard enough.
-
The truth loves nights the way that a child loves a beloved toy or a teenaged couple loves each other, jealous and possessive and true. There’s a certain comfort in darkness and sleeplessness that forces truth out of the unwilling and for a liar, night is the most dangerous time of day.
-
Light and L’s nights were hectic and genuine in a way that no other time of day was. They undress and shed their lies for a few hours before Light falls asleep and L goes back to working, his laptop the only source of light in the room.
That night, they were antagonistic and angry in a way that they sometimes tried not to be. Their monsters were out and it was always better to let them play than to try and rein them in. Their mouths pressed bruises into fragile skin and nails drew blood and their throats shamelessly created moans and their lungs were unable to draw in enough air and when it was over, Light pressed the words, “I love you” into L’s neck with his mouth before falling asleep.
-
Months later after the handcuffs fall off and a notebook is recovered, L and Light find themselves on the roof in the rain and Light’s blood is singing because he has won and L is oddly drawn and introspective and before the death and the detective drying him off with that white, white towel, but after L hears bells that aren’t there, Light hears the question, “Have you ever told the truth at any point since you were born?”
And he thinks about the day he couldn’t tell the truth and he thinks about the words whispered into a neck as white as sin during the night and he says, “What are you talking about Ryuzaki?”
He says, “It’s true I lie once in a while.”
He says, “I’ve been careful not to tell lies that hurt others.”
And L hunches his shoulders even more and makes a sound that almost sounds fond and defeated and says, “I thought you’d say that.”
L says, “Let’s go back.”
And in that moment, with the Light-that-was screaming in his head and Kira already laughing in victory, Light just agrees and follows the man that could have been his equal back inside and doesn’t allow himself to feel anything but triumphant when L finally collapses and dies and takes the few truths that Light still had with him.
