What is the Difference between IE1, IE2, IE3, and IE4 Electric Induction Motors?
IE1 Motors (Standard Efficiency Motors)IE2 Motors (High Efficiency)IE3 Motors (Premium Efficiency)IE4 Motors (Super Premium Efficiency)
Induction motors are so far the best and most used electric motors these days. From small-scale equipment to heavy-duty industries, an induction electric motor is considered the best choice for different levels. While for the domestic level, small induction motors are used, large industrial appliances employ big induction motors for various requirements.
Classification of induction motors
We can classify induction motors into 4 different categories according to their level of efficiency. It is determined as per The International Efficiency standard of IEC 60034-30-1. Based on its proficiency level, an AC asynchronous motor can belong to either IE1, IE2, IE3, or IE4 category. These are the four major subdivisions that fall in the Standard Efficiency parameters.
Each range of AC induction motors comes with different features and levels of capability to be used for distinct requirements. IE1 is defined as the Standard Efficiency range while IE2, lying in the Higher-Efficiency range, shows a better efficiency rate than that of the previous series. This goes similar to the Ie3 and IE4 motors, as they exceed their previous models and deliver better performance.
Read on to find out what are the key differences among the four types and how they will help you to choose the right AC induction motor for your machines.
The IE1 motors fall in the standard category of International Efficiency parameters. The International standards for these motors consist of IEC 60034-30 and IEC 60034-2-1. With a respective aluminum and cast-iron frame size of 56-200 and 80-400, the duty type for these motors is type S. Being a normal class asynchronous motor, it can be applied where a constant speed operation is needed.
Its key highlights are:
Output: 0.75kW to 355kW
Poles: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12
Speed range: 500rpm to 3600rpm
Rpm frequency: 50Hz or 60Hz
Temperature class: B
The cooling technology used: IC411
Insulation class: F
Protection technology: IP55, IP56, IP65, IP66
The IE2 category lies in the High Energy Efficient class of motors. IE2 3 phase motors electric motors perform better than the previous IE1 series. In comparison to an IE1 induction electric motor, motors from this class consume less power, helping you save on your electricity bills as well. The respective aluminum and cast-iron frame sizes for IE2 motors are 80-160 and 80-40
Output: 0.75kW to 355kW
Poles: 2, 4, 6
Speed range: 1000rpm to 3600rpm
Rpm frequency: 50Hz to 60Hz
Temperature class: B
The cooling technology used: IC411
Duty Type: Type S
Insulation class: F
Protection technology: IP55, IP56, IP65, IP66
IE3 or Premium Efficient motors are one step away from IE2 types of AC induction motors. It is better than the preceding series in terms of performance and consumes even lower power. The international standards for these motors contain IEC 60034-1-30.
Output: 0.75kW to 355kW
Poles: 2, 4, 6, 8
Speed range: 750rpm to 3600rpm
Rpm frequency: 50Hz to 60Hz
Temperature class: B
The cooling technology used: IC411 and IC416
Duty Type: Type S1, S2, and S3
Insulation class: F
Protection technology: IP55, IP56, IP65, IP66
With the highest efficiency standard, IE4 motors lie in the Super Premium Efficiency class. They consume less power while providing higher performance rates and are best employed in continuous duty applications.
Output: 2.2kW to 230kW
Poles: 2, 4, 6, 8
Speed range: 750rpm to 3600rpm
Rpm frequency: 50Hz to 60Hz
Aluminum frame range: 100-160
Cast-iron frame range: 100-315
Temperature class: B
The cooling technology used: IC411 and IC416
Duty Type: Type S1
Insulation class: F
Protection technology: IP55, IP56, IP65

Improving motor specification to boost the efficiency of submersible wastewater pumps
Electric motors in industrial applications, including those used in pumping systems, consume 30 to 40 percent of the world's electricity. For the past two decades, equipment manufacturers, users and regulators have been tackling excessive energy consumption. This has led to the development of higher efficiency standards for motors and the adoption of variable speed drive (VSD) technologies to better match energy use and demand. For motors designed for running in continuous duty applications (S1 operation), the International Electrotechnical Commission standard IEC-60034-30:2014 defines minimum energy efficiency specifications for four classes of motors: - IE1, Standard Efficiency; - IE2 High Efficiency, - IE3 Premium Efficiency and - IE4 Super Premium Efficiency. Each step up the IE efficiency ladder is associated with around a 20 percent reduction in motor losses, which translates directly into significant operating cost-savings. The 2014 update also includes 8-pole motors and has widened the rated power band to include 0.12 kW up to 1'000 kW motors. US NEMA efficiency standards use an almost identical approach. In Europe, the IE3 standard has been mandatory for new industrial motors rated between 0.75 kW and 375 kW since 2017. The European Commission estimates that the current efficiency regulations have reduced annual energy consumption by 57 TWh across the continent. Read the full article
